The astronaut campus is for millionaires/ billionaires who have so much money they don’t know where to spend it. Meanwhile we have folks who are homeless on our streets and others trying to stay off the streets who cannot find affordable housing.

The income inequality in this country is shameful and despicable. We have second and third homes in Santa Fe that sit empty most of the year. Instead of trips into space and astronaut campuses, what we need is well-funded mental health and addiction services, huge taxes on upscale homes and affordable housing for average Santa Feans.

Consider frozen treats

We love to eat ice cream in the summer; why wouldn’t our pets love a frozen treat, too? If you are the culinary type, there are many recipes for frozen dog treats to be found on the internet. My dog thinks it’s a treat to simply lick an ice cube when the temperature soars. If you have chickens, they love to peck at frozen cantaloupe or watermelon during the summer heat.

Overall rule of thumb: If you are hot, your pet is likely hotter. Stay cool and keep your pets cool.

Dogs and cats like to sunbathe, but direct sunlight can overheat them and lead to heat stroke. Make sure your pet has plenty of shade, or better yet, keep them indoors if you have air conditioning.

ummer is in full swing, y’all. We’ve had some really hot days lately, and while the monsoons have temporarily cooled things down, we’re still experiencing record-high temperatures—which could be a recipe for disaster for our fourlegged friends.

Dogs aren’t as adept at regulating themselves during hot weather as humans, so they will chase balls, sprint around the park and play, play, play until they pass out from heat stroke. So it’s up to us as companions to keep them safe and

Make sure your pet has access to fresh, clean water. It is a good practice, especially in the heat, to change your pet’s water a few times a day. I like to add ice cubes to the bowl because my dogs enjoy playing around with them. Dogs and cats don’t sweat like we do. They drink water and pant to bring their body temperature down. If you have a smaller critter like a rabbit or guinea pig, you can give them an extra helping of green veggies to help them stay hydrated. If your critter gets its water from a bottle, consider adding a crock as well so they can increase their water intake when it’s hot. It’s also a good idea to place a frozen water bottle in the area where your smaller critter lives so they can lie next to it if they need to cool down.

Walk your dogs during the cooler hours

There are no better reasons to get up early than to watch the sunrise or to walk your dog before the sun heats up the day. Early in the morning and later in the evening are better choices to walk your pet than during the midday heat. Also remember to take breaks in the shade and have water available for your pet on walks. Remember to check the pavement before you walk your pet.

Temperatures on these surfaces can exceed 145 degrees. Place your hand on the surface for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, then it’s too hot for your pet. Some pets will tolerate booties to protect their paws, not to mention they make quite the fashion statement!

Leaving your pet in a parked car even for a few short minutes can be fatal. On an 85-degree day, temperatures in a car can reach 100 degrees in the shade and top 160 degrees in the sun in just a few minutes. It is best to leave your pet at home on extremely warm days. If you have to take your pet with you, remember to bring water and a water dish. And never leave your pet unattended in the car, even for a minute. Seriously guys, it’s 2022. Get it together.

Big Case Crew District attorney’s Complex Crime Team aims to let prosecutors focus on high-profile crimes B Y G R A N T C R AW F O R D g r a n t @ s f r e p o r t e r. c o m

ive homicides in two counties over the course of six hours: that’s the type of case that gets the attention of the Complex Crime Unit at the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

A Santa Fe jury convicted Damian Herrera, 26, of four of those 2017 murders last April in Santa Fe. (He awaits trial for an alleged fifth murder in Taos County.) District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies credits the unit, which she created after taking office at the beginning of 2021, with securing those convictions.

Murders, crimes against children and white-collar financial cases can drag on— often for years. So during a brainstorming session, the group at the DA’s office decided it would be more efficient to dedicate extra resources to large, evidence-heavy and emotionally taxing cases.

“When I first started here, we were sort of operating in a kind of seat-of-our-pants way of getting ready for trial,” Carmack-Altwies tells SFR. “Sometimes different pieces of discovery, of evidence or trial prep, were all sitting in different people’s hands. It just didn’t make sense for these huge cases, because that makes it so much easier for things to get lost, overlooked or forgotten about.”

Today, the unit includes a senior-support staff, a certified crime-scene technician and information technology specialist. A rotating cast of attorneys who all have other duties take the legal lead on cases for the team, the budget for which comes from the DA’s office general fund. The state approved a request in the 2023 fiscal year budget for an additional support staff position.

In the last year, the team has had nine homicide cases that ended in guilty pleas or murder convictions, according to figures provided by the DA’s office. Prosecutors dropped one case because of discovery issues, and they lost another after witnesses changed their statements.

“That is amazing, especially when you add

in COVID protocols and the fact that things were slowing down,” Carmack-Altwies says, adding that the team took 10 murder cases to trial in one year. The team is “part of the reason we don’t have a backlog in the First Judicial District like other districts do.”

Most recently, the unit handled the Estevan Montoya case, which ended in a first-degree murder conviction after a twoweek trial in May for Montoya’s killing of Fedonta “JB” White. At least 10% of the offices 50 support staff and 18 attorneys spent time on the case, she reports.

Dan Marlowe, Montoya’s lawyer, is working on an appeal. He tells SFR it was likely his last case, as he plans to retire, and that he wasn’t aware of the special unit and didn’t notice a difference in the proceedings.

“I don’t know what their idea of a complex case is, but that’s not my idea of a complex case,” Marlowe says. “As a prosecutor, I wouldn’t have any problem with it. The chips are kind of stacked against [the defense] to begin with.”

The pretrial witness list for the Montoya trial included about 70 names, while the prosecutors—Chief Deputy DA Jennifer Padgett Macias and Blake Nichols—called 30 to the stand. Carmack-Altwies called it “our biggest win to date and our biggest strike for justice.”

“In front of the courtroom, we had two of our best attorneys on it, but behind the courtroom they were set up in two different offices in the courthouse,” she tells SFR. Three people on the complex crime team worked continuously on the case, while a separate victim advocate team was present for the entire trial to help coordinate with witnesses and White’s family.

The group effort, Padgett Macias says, has allowed the prosecutors to focus on trials and make good impressions in front of juries.

Not every case has worked out for the team. For instance, last year a Santa Fe County jury found a man accused of shooting a tourist on Airport Road in 2018 not guilty, after the defendant’s companions who originally implicated him in the crime testified a different person had pulled the trigger.

“There were a number of teenagers together on Airport Road when the victim was shot and killed and they all kind of went different directions,” Padgett Macias says. “I think the defense successfully were able to riddle the case with reasonable doubt about maybe it was someone else.”

In another case, prosecutors dropped charges against Mario Anchondo in the 2020 shooting death of Ivan Perez. Prosecutors say the Santa Fe Police Department’s case file was missing around 30 pieces of evidence,

forcing the DA’s office to let go of the case.

Anchondo was later arrested on drug- and firearm-related charges.

“So the good news that comes out of that is that if the evidence does ever come out, we’ve saved that case from a not guilty or a dismissal at trial,” Carmack-Altwies says. “That was, in my eyes, another success coming out of our Complex Crime Unit, because they realized before we got to trial, ‘We don’t have enough.’”

The state could refile charges against Anchondo, although Jennifer Burrill, an attorney in the public defenders office, says cases shouldn’t be brought in the first place until prosecutors have enough evidence.

Still, if forming a complex crime unit means greater sharing of information and less time litigating discovery issues, she’s all for it.

“I think prioritizing the cases that are most important to protect the community is a big role [of ] the district attorney…focusing on those that they think will really drastically increase the safety of the community,” Burrill says.

The team has 19 active cases in Santa Fe and 11 in Rio Arriba County.

“I’m an attorney,” Assistant District Attorney Tony Long says. “I can put things together, but I don’t have that time and that level of organization to do what the team does.”

t’s high-noon as we sit on the patio at Ex Novo Brewing Company, a giant beer and booze joint just north of downtown Albuquerque. I eye the place and see that everyone is going completely sideways. Is it heat exhaustion? Bath salts?

“Look at that one,” I say to my girlfriend, Rae, who is Yupik and Inupiaq—or, Eskimo to the uninitiated—then point to a white man sitting square in the sun, getting pinker and pinker by the minute. “Look at his eyes.

Booze doesn’t do that—he’s losing it.”

Nearby, two wiggy blondes whoop it up under the brutal beams, dancing in an open field to no music at all. It’s a helluva scene all around, like a four-day summer music festival. I want to join in, but I’m here on business.

We finally find some shade under a tree and one of those things that spritzes a cool mist on the back of your neck when Jeremiah Bitsui, the 41-year-old actor and entrepreneur, rounds the corner, shoving his phone into his back pocket. He apologizes for a spot of tardiness, then embraces me and Rae. “Let’s grab a drink!” I blurt out. “Yes, let’s,” Bitsui says.

We trundle into the packed taproom, and the eye-darting and whispers begin almost instantly.

All the booming conversations fall to an excited whisper. Jeremiah has one of the most recognizable faces in New Mexico and indeed throughout Indian Country. For more than 10 years, Jeremiah, who’s Diné, has played the role of Victor—first, in AMC’s Breaking Bad, and then its spinoff, Better Call Saul. The latter will air its series finale on Aug. 15. (He’s also starring as Hoski, the conflicted antagonist of AMC’s Dark Winds, but we’ll get to that later.)

The character of Victor is a stoic, scowling, unblinking beast hired by the vicious, throat-cutting cartel boss, Gustavo Fring.

Jeremiah, the man, can relate. (We’ll get to that later, too.) Nowadays, though, he is all grins and good spirits. He’s the proverbial pal who’ll give you the shirt off his back in a rainstorm, and perhaps his pants, too, though I haven’t asked.

Until the age of 10, Jeremiah and his family bounced around the Navajo Nation, living in places like Tuba City, Chinle and Window Rock. The Bitsuis are a renowned rodeo fam10

ily, even to this day, and he spent many years chillin’ in a trailer, even though he’s allergic to hay.

They then relocated to Albuquerque’s North Valley where, later, he would run with some pretty hard cats. Today, he again hangs his hat in the ABQ, and, on occasion, he’ll zip into Santa Fe whenever I can convince him to meet me for an hour of good-natured shittalking and pool at the New Mexico Hard Cider Taproom, a de facto gin joint with its own scene of devil-may-care dancing and wide, wild eyes.

Rewind to Denver, a few years back when Jeremiah and I first met: He walked up wearing a pink polo and white cap. I met him, his mom, Ruth, and dad, Edison, the late renowned Diné rodeo rider. It was 9 am, and we were there for a charity golf tournament to raise money for some nonprofit in Indian Country. Jeremiah was the celebrity actor, and I, a Chicano and Oglala Lakota, was the celebrity word nerd—or, at least, the only Native reporter and pundit in a mainstream American newsroom they could find at the time.

I had hoped to be paired with Jeremiah, but instead I was pushed into a golf cart with a tall, 50-something white lawyer who represented Native tribes. The counselor said, “Here,” and handed me a can of ice-covered Coors Banquet from his cooler. “Ready?” he asked, chugging his in one swift gulp.

Jeremiah was in the cart ahead of us and shouted, “Alright, fellas. Let’s go!” He hit the gas and waved to his mom and dad like a good son would.

It only took us a few minutes to get to the first hole, but by then my new golf buddy was on his third Banquet. “You’re up!” he barked, gesturing for me to hit first. “What kind of fucking shot was that?” the lawyer bellowed as I missed the ball entirely with a mighty first swing. “I’m a goddamn journalist!” I shouted back. “We can’t afford to golf.”

“Well, we can’t goddamn afford to lose!” he responded, housing another Coors.

Jeremiah walked over to me with a smile and shrugged off the white man’s grizzle.

“Have you ever played?” he asked with a patient tone.

“If by ‘play’ you mean mini golf, then yes, many times,” I said.

He chuckled. “It’s alright. Just grab it like this...”

Jeremiah then showed me how to hold a driver and how to “lean my hips into it.” The lawyer chilled out after that. And for the rest of the day, between beers, he grew less dicky and more friendly. Perhaps he realized he was being a beer-soaked, cranky curmudgeon, and that we weren’t there to jockey for a green jacket, but for a good cause for the Natives on the land his people stole.

Jeremiah, once named one of Elle Magazine’s Most Eligible Bachelors, has that cheer-you-up, good-times impact on people, which makes it hard to believe that when he was growing up in Albuquerque, he saw plenty of types who weren’t far from the character he portrays on Better Call Saul.

When he was 17, Jeremiah got into a rap battle at a backyard Fourth of July party in Albuquerque. He admits he was completely out of his skull on drink that night. It wasn’t long, he says, before the rap battle escalated. Fuming that Jeremiah was winning, the other guy drew a gun and started firing. That’s when all hell broke loose.

People dropped their drinks and fled, screaming, while others clutched one another. One of Jeremiah’s homies grabbed him and dragged him away to a waiting car before they hit the gas. Someone yelled, “We need to go to the hospital! Now!” Jeremiah says it was probably the drink or the adrenaline, but he hadn’t noticed he’d been shot twice. He took one in the thigh and another in the calf.

When they got to the hospital, Jeremiah tried to stand on his own but collapsed at the emergency room entrance. He finally woke up later on a bed to the sight of tubes in his arms and a beeping thing behind him.

And nobody saw anyone and nobody knew anything, because that’s the code, and you never stray from it. Even seedy Wall Street shills have their own code. The difference is those fat cat crooks will arrive in suits and ties and will leave with your pension.

When the boys in blue finally arrived and questioned the whole crew, they went with a story about bullets falling through roofs, which is true. In places like LA, Albuquerque and Oakland, soiled gangsters with guns will fire into the night sky on the Fourth of July, and what goes up must come down.

Astonishingly, their plan worked.

The next day, Jeremiah decided to give up the tough-guy scene.

Part of that change was to leave New Mexico and head for Los Angeles, which he did as soon as he graduated from

Albuquerque High. But his old life followed him like shit on his shoe. While in the City of Angels, considering college, Jeremiah was getting daily phone calls—threats—though, from whom he couldn’t tell you to this day.

“Get in line,” he would tell whichever caller said they were coming after him.

Now, many years later, Jeremiah is a husband and a father of two, a celebrated actor, and even the owner of his own company, Bitco (the name is a combination of his last name and the word “corporation”), which works to clean up uranium-mine waste on the Navajo Nation. There are hundreds of these nasty, cancer-causing cluster bombs on and near the Navajo Nation due to backin-the-day uranium mining. Many of the sites were abandoned long ago, with no attempt at remediation, leaving the people square in the path of a putrid pestilence.

Jeremiah’s grandmother, who never smoked a day in her life, died from lung cancer caused by what’s known as “downwinder syndrome”—when a person is exposed to CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

carcinogens and radiation due to industrial environmental contamination. When I ask Jeremiah about the cleanup efforts, he says, “Thank God it’s happening now.” He hopes his company will go national some day. “It’s a real experience that we [Navajos] can relate to.”

Meanwhile, as Jeremiah’s company competes against white-owned companies to clean up the many messes white men made, drill-baby-drill politicians—those who admit it and those who don’t—continue to prowl these Indigenous, ancestral lands like a chubacabra, eager to sink and stain their fangs with the blood of soil, then skulk back into a pile of excuses and bullshit.

Jeremiah Bitsui, with his deep New Mexico ties, has been tearing it up on the small screen for AMC, including in his role of Hoski on Dark Winds.

Most recently, Jeremiah starred as Hoski in Dark Winds, which George RR Martin and Robert Redford helmed as executive producers.

Back in June, there was a red-carpet premiere at the Violet Crown in Santa Fe. Jeremiah was on the road that night and couldn’t make it, so he asked if I wanted to attend. “Why not?” I thought. It’s a Native gig, so maybe they’ll have some of that good ol’ Diné frybread. “If nothing else,” I tell Rae, “it’ll at least give me a reason to pull out my ‘I Stand With Standing Rock’ shirt.”

When Rae and I arrive, the place is riddled with Native glitterati donning widebrimmed, beaded hats, bolo ties and dark sunglasses. A bevy of white folks, drenched in turquoise, clutch that one free glass of chilled chardonnay. Wes Studi, the Cherokee actor and film producer, stands at the back and nods as someone gabs at him between bites of finger food.

Two drinks and about a dozen “hi-howare-yas” later, Rae and I are ready to bail, but the entrance is blocked by George RR Martin’s hat, beard and hips. It was the only way in and the only way out, unless we wanted to barrel right through either the man himself or the emergency exits behind us. He’s deep into a conversation when I say, “Excuse me...George? Pardon.”

The fellow word nerd either doesn’t hear me or thinks I was a mad Game of Thrones fan vying for an autograph. “George, excuse me,” I say with a bit more gusto.

Nothing.

“George!” I finally bellowed. He turns and looks square at me with a bit of concern.

“Just trying to leave, pal,” I say. He politely moves aside at about the time the rest of the Dark Winds cast floods out of a massive black SUV, each of them dressed to the nines in that beautiful, beaded Native way.

Rae and I repair to Boxcar, down the street, where we are wolfing down wings and a plate of bang-bang shrimp when I get a text from Jeremiah. “How was it?” he asks.

“I should’ve bought a bolo tie,” I respond,

later adding color to the story and telling him Rae had to tackle Martin to the ground because he said he wasn’t going to let anyone leave until everyone admitted in writing that Game of Thrones is better than The Lord of the Rings.

Back at Ex Novo, still sitting under the hose misting away, I ask Jeremiah: “Alright, what’s next now that both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are done?”

“There’s a movie I shot right in between filming Saul and Dark Winds,” he says. “It’s called Frybread Face and Me, directed by the Diné director, Billy Luther. This time, I play a very light-hearted character.”

He adds that for the past decade or so, he’s learned from the “best in the business,” Vince Gilligan, for example, the creator of Bad and co-creator of Saul. So, now, Jeremiah has taken on new roles: director, producer and writer. He’s got a few irons in the fire, but, sadly, he says, he can’t talk about toast while it’s still bread.

So, stay tuned.

We sit at the back of the brewery for at least 30 minutes talking movies, Indian Country and the mysteries of Roswell and little green men with a penchant for probing before none of us can take it anymore. The heat is too much. It beats us like a gong.

The pink man with the wild eyes has all but evaporated, I think to myself, and the dancing girls have spun off somewhere into the ether. The taproom is lively and getting more and more loaded by the hour.

As we get up to leave and say our goodbyes in that “good ol’ Indian way,” a tall 20-something quickly steps out of the taproom and gingerly approaches Jeremiah, tapping him on his shoulder.

“I’m sorry, but I had to ask...did you play Victor in Breaking Bad?” Jeremiah, ever patient and approachable, smiles and says, “Yep. That’s me.”

The blond boy, probably one of the whispering ones from earlier, immediately begins to fawn over Jeremiah and tells him how much he loved the show and his work.

Behind that guy is a filled-to-the-brim taproom with folks nodding at each other in that “See, I told you so!” way while others shoot excited waves toward Jeremiah.

Indeed, in a world where the famous can be dicks, and where some shun fans like pricks, Jeremiah is a flip of a warm pillow to the cool side. He doesn’t let his celebrity go to his head; he’s had too many humbling experiences in his life and patience is in his blood.

“Our culture is to listen,” he says. “As a father, I’ve learned that one of the best things you can do is be present.” Jeremiah thanks the fan once again, waves back at the room, then leaves to go be present.

In true exploratory form, Ranran Fan, as a US-based Chinese citizen, crafted the new exhibit Brutally Sensitive to tackle tech-based questions ranging from censorship to the increasingly blurred lines between machine-crafted and handmade art forms. Her pieces exist to stimulate your senses through sound, texture and visual diagrams of the body that are, shall we say, less than human. It’s an art-meets-tech extravaganza with laser-cut poetry and floating fabric patches sewn together using a 3D filament pen. In addition, Fan adds in musings ranging from her personal experiences with PTSD to the Chinese Communist Party’s feelings on freedom of speech. FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS Wow, Brooklyn indie-folk quartet Florist has a real gem on their hands with their new record, Florist. Word is frontwoman Emily Sprague and company took to a rented house in New York’s Hudson Valley to dabble both with the calm-and-pretty style for which the band is known, as well as with found sounds.. Music site Pitchfork likens this to an audio documentary, but we prefer to see it like a talented songwriting crew coming into their own. Comparisons are inevitable (Cat Stevens, Mirah, maybe a little Feist), but Sprague’s diary-like lyricism feels more like a confessional stream of consciousness than it does over-wrought broad narrative. In other words, she’s a one-of-a-kind lyricist, and when the country elements flare up beside sexy synths and you catch a snippet of relatable words, you just kind of feel good for the future of thoughtful, pretty music. Bedazzled Artist Hollis Chitto wraps up School for Advanced Research Fellowship with talk, studio tour Depending on who you ask about beadwork, it can be a painstaking artistry that requires superhuman levels of concentration, it can be a chance to experiment with patterns and color combos or it can fall someplace in between. For artist Hollis Chitto (Mississippi Choctaw, Laguna/ Isleta Pueblo), it’s a chance to get intricate, sure, but also an opportunity to try new things until the piece is just right.

“What I tell people I like about beads is that it’s not like painting,” Chitto tells SFR. “You can cut the beads off and use them again.”

As we speak, Chitto’s in the final states of their stint as the School for Advanced Research’s 2022 Ron and Susan Dubin Native Artist Fellow. It’s an honor their father accepted as well in 2006, and one which has allowed them to dig into ideas of tradition and social statement as seen through a contemporary lens.

“I remember thinking it was the coolest opportunity,” Chitto says of their father’s time as a fellow. “Since then, it’s been one of the goals I’ve been working toward in my career—I’ve always just kind of been working toward this.”

For the fellowship, Chitto set out to create a pair of soft sculpture dolls, a term they describe as ultimately out-of-date,

particularly since the name of the game this time out is innovation. Crafting two pieces in such a short time frame proved unfeasible, however, but scaling back the project to one work has allowed Chitto extra time to focus on creating more intricate outfits, such as jeans, a skirt and other ephemera. Regardless, the overall concept is a little more about showcasing Chitto’s modern take on the concept of being Two Spirit—in a nutshell, a Native identity that equally embraces both feminine and masculine energies—or, as Chitto says, “what I see in the world.”

“Tradition has its merit, and we have to keep that going, but at the same time, innovation is traditional,” Chitto explains.

“I wanted to make something Two Spirit because I don’t think I’d ever seen one; I wanted to make it a snapshot of the zeitgeist, where we are now, and what I see is a lot of Two Spirits; and we’re kind of reclaiming that title and that feeling.”

Comedy fans surely know the great Matt Besser—a mainstay in film and television, a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy mecca, a master of improv and one of the weirder, funnier and most talented people working in yuks today. Besser comes to Santa Fe this week to record his Improv4Humans podcast live (7 pm Thursday, Aug. 11. $30$40. Jean Cocteau Cinema, 418 Montezuma Ave., (505) 466-5528) and to teach a special invite-only class for Santa Fe Stages students.

Obviously we had to get in touch with the guy.

(Alex De Vore) A buddy told me you have some kind of Santa Fe connection—your dad lives here or something?

My parents have passed away, but when we were kids, we used to go to Santa Fe on vacation every year starting when I was 8.

We’d be there for like a week at the end of August when it’s so exciting in Santa Fe— the markets. I have good memories of that, and when I went to college, my parents both moved there. Both were very active in the arts scene in supporting artists, particularly the Museum of International Folk Art. Did you find your comedic practice evolving during the pandemic, when lockdowns prevented live events, and are you really thrilled to be getting back to inperson shows?

At first I think it was awkward for improvisers and everybody to do Zoom shows. It felt awkward at first, but it didn’t last too long. I think as we all got used to the tool, it got better. As it’s opening up and people are going back into studios, I don’t think [Zoom is] necessary. I enjoy live shows in front of an audience. We just did a show at the abandoned old zoo in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, so that was very exciting. Some people were actually doing Zoom shows where the audience is sending out ‘likes’ and ‘laughs,’ and good for everybody doing all that, but when you know you’re being watched but can’t hear the laughter? It was like people doing shows

at drive-in theaters where people were honking, but you couldn’t hear the laughs.

I understand you’re a bit of a punk rock fan. Is part of that a sort of ethos overlap between punk and comedy?

That’s a deep one. I don’t think you have enough ink. In your teens, when you first hear it, you have a lot of pent-up energy you don’t know what to do with, and at the time you might even call it anger. You want to put it somewhere besides other people.

For teenage Matt Besser, the energy of punk rock really was a great outlet for what I was going through, and I think a lot of young men go through that—and women, I’m just speaking from what I know.

So this is a specific Santa Fe story: There used to be this cool record store there, and I’m trying to remember the name but I can’t, and I’d go there when I was in Santa Fe, and I bought Dead Kennedys’ Nazi Punks Fuck Off when I was very young, like 13 or something.

I have such a vivid memory of buying that record, because it had this armband that came with it that had this anti-Nazi symbol; it was a 45 that had so much anti-authority in it I couldn’t believe it. I remember a parent driving us back to Bishop’s Lodge and my friend trying to get me in trouble like, ‘Matthew, tell Mr. Burford what you bought…’

DK was kind of like a forbidden fruit.

Punk at that time was something crazy, and I grew up liking a lot of those bands most simply because of that. I was laughing at my young self listening to some British bands like The Angelic Upstarts. They’d have these songs about coal mine workers who died and stuff I didn’t know about historically— people I had no idea who they’re singing about, and I’m all angry about it. It’s just funny what you latch onto. At the time, maybe I think I’m political, I’m into anarchy.

When I was a teenager, I thought I was starting a band that was going to be a funny Beastie Boys, and after we did one show, the rest of the guys in the band came to me and, in so many words said something like, ‘You should just do comedy, Matt.’ And they ended up being a real punk band—the band Trusty that was on Dischord. I was the Pete Best.

You probably get asked this so often, but what is making you laugh lately?

On my show Improv4Humans, I don’t have an official ensemble, but I do have people I invite back a lot. Someone in particular I’m thinking of right now, because she also just got New Faces at Just For Laughs, is Lisa Gilroy. There’s Vic Michaelis, who you can see on that show Upload. Dan Lippert, he’s part of a group called Big Grande; Ronnie Adrian; Mookie Blaiklock...

Mirabal. What sort of freedom did you have to enlist talent for the film?

I was hired as a creative producer, and [director] Dan Trachtenberg—who is brilliant and did 10 Cloverfield Lane—gave me the script and said, ‘What can we do to be more authentic?’ That was a pleasure.

Almost never do you get that freedom.

Usually productions are getting their info from other movies, and we know for Native culture that’s mainly fictitious. Being able to use my creative freedom, though? If you didn’t have a Native producer on set every day…everything in there is totally of the Comanche world.

The Predator in Prey has an almost primal look. Can you tell us about the monster design?

That was the beauty of setting this film in the 1700s. We didn’t have to go by the typical Predator book. This could have been the great granddad of all Predators, and we got to work with his design and change him. We made him more slender and athletic.

Think about the franchise, too: The tech is better, so now it doesn’t look like a tall guy in a monster suit, it looks more real.

Dan and I worked hand in hand with [effects studio] ADI, and because we brought him back in time, I wanted his helmet to look more skull-like, I wanted him more feral-looking. Or his weapons—some things are the same, some are a little different.

In the script, he’s jumping from tree to tree, so I said he needed to have a dewclaw if he’s doing all this jumping. I go rock climbing, and sometimes you can barely be hanging there with your small toe every bit as powerful as your big toe, so I wanted him to have this visible way to do that.

SFR: We’ve seen it before when Hollywood gloms onto Native America, but this point in time feels different. Do you think we’ve finally rounded a bend that’ll allow for Native storytellers to tell their stories in film and television more regularly?

Jhane Myers: I think we rounded that bend simply because the Sundance Institute produced a lot of really good filmmakers. So before, when we wanted Native films and representation, the pool was small for Native writers, directors, producers, but once the Institute had that program, a lot of people went through that. At the screening last night, we had five people in the audience who were Sundance fellows—and that’s not even including me, so I guess we had six.

And you know, we need to have representation, but we need to be there to execute it, so to me that’s the big difference I’ve seen.

I’ve been in the industry for a while, but now the pool is much larger. You have Sterlin Harjo, Sierra Teller Ornelas... last night in the audience we had Razelle Benally, who worked on Dark Winds; Ashely Browning, who’s working on the

The timing is right, and for me, because I like action/adventure and I grew up on the franchise, I think that when I read the script and it had all this Native content, I was thrilled. Most of the time when you’re brought in to produce, it’s maybe 20% Native content, but this one had no boundaries. It was like, ‘Oh we want to do it with the Comanche, we’re setting it 300 years ago.’ All [the Comanche] have [from that

t a recent screening of the new 20th Century Fox film Prey, a packed house learned exactly why representation in film matters—and that people are thirsting for Native content created by Native people. The newest entry in the long-running Predator series, Prey takes things back to the 1700s and Comanche land, where a young would-be hunter named Naru (Amber Midthunder, Fort Peck Sioux Tribe—and a New Mexican, btw) runs into the nefarious space monster. SFR caught up with Prey producer Jhane Meyers (Comanche and Blackfeet) to learn a little more about how a sci-fi action movie turned out to be an important milestone in cinematic history—and you can catch our full review in the Movies section on page 28.

This is the first mainstream film to ever be fully dubbed into Comanche. Was that an important facet from the start for you?

Yes, it was. That’s what I live for. I’m enrolled Comanche, I’m also Blackfeet, and I just really wanted to bring something home to my community. I guess my mantra is that if you have Native content in your film and the film depends on it, I think you have to go the whole way and make it 100%, and you need to have that Native language as well.

Dan had this whole script, and across the top it read ‘All dialogue in Comanche,” and I was like, ‘What? Yes!’ We weren’t able to do that, but we were able to infuse some Comanche into the film. So when the studio execs saw it, they said since it was going to be streaming, why don’t we do an option to stream in Comanche? But there’s not a template on how to do that. When people have put other films into a Native language, they have, like, a year to do it. In this film, all of the actors reprise their roles in Comanche.

If you listen to the English version and the Comanche version, you’ll still hear Naru doing their part. It’s really an eye-opener, and I hope it opens a lot of doors. Usually when it comes to Native culture, they say, ‘Do it all in Native? We don’t have the budget for that.’ There are all kinds of excuses because it hasn’t been proven, right? Now it has been proven. We’ve launched a movie in the Native language. People think we’re no longer living, that we’re in the past, and even though this movie is set in period, we’re still doing this, we’re still speaking, and hopefully it’ll mean more speakers.

Just think—film is such a great medium and appeals to such a broad audience, so imagine kids asking their grandparents how you say this or that in Comanche. If I’m only known for this, I’ve succeeded in life.

usician Andrew Tumason is a California kid—well, by birth, at least.

You’ll still hear a West Coast tinge in his voice, even if he’s always on the move. When he’s not frequenting Northern New Mexico, you might stumble upon Tumason in Colorado, or in Iceland; you might find him going back-and-forth over the Tasman Sea. As it turns out, the wanderlust is real, and if you go thousands of miles in any direction, you’ll likely find a friend of his. Some might call it restlessness, but such travels make up the soul within the concept album project Hajiko, which Tumason released in June under his musical moniker, Woven Talon— but which he’ll roll out to the larger public this week in Santa Fe. “Yeah, I’m definitely a nomad,” Tumason tells SFR. “It brought a whole range of style, and [the record] is woven together from that.”

Tumason was classically trained in piano at 8 years old. That grew to include banjo skills, the drums and just about anything else that can produce a note. But Santa Fe’s African-Haitian dance and percussion scene ultimately stole Tumason’s heart, which provided access to the wealth of international sounds that would become the backbone of his musical career.

“A lot of people tell me I should be scoring films,” Tumason says. “That’s an aspiration of mine, and I always wanted to do a score for Dune. But as I grew through the years, I wrote my own story that was inspired by [the novel] Dune, something that ties all these musical styles together.

And it became something totally different in the end.”

While Hans Zimmer beat him to the punch on the Dune score front, you’ll still discover a deeply mystical world from Woven Talon that might go even beyond what Dune has to offer. Hajiko is the third in a series of concept records following 2018’s Dreamlines and 2020’s Kahu. It plays like a dreamy and borderline New Age soundscape, each track adding pieces to a triad of stories and lore. On Hajiko, for instance, protagonist Kahu finds themself at the edge of the fictional Indigo dunes. There’s no telling what lies beyond, but before our hero can find out, a character dubbed Grandfather Owl Ruca takes him on a journey to learn the songs of the ancients. In broad strokes, the albums are about the rediscovery of the world belonging to our ancestors—and the wisdom they still have to impart.

friend, Christian Pyle, at their Prawn & Spanner recording studio in Byron Bay, Australia, where the album was made.

Those instruments prove their worth on tracks like “Ruca,” a major centerpiece of the new album’s overall sound. It opens with a familiar sci-fi buzz before giving way to chants and a slide into in an unexpectedly soft melody. Its dramatic tone rings downright cinematic, as if one is wandering through a Kurosawa work or living through an expertly edited montage. An energy rises through the track, as if building toward something celebratory, and when the homemade instruments flare up beside Eastern-influenced strings, a universe flares into existence.

Tumason even created his own language for the songs, and that Tolkein-esqe dedication adds an esoteric sense of freedom. Such steps invite listeners to paint their own picture of the goings-on, but, similarly to how soundtracks and scores can help us identify how to feel, Tumason’s intent remains clear.

No song better showcases the newly-wrought language than “Jhiko,” save album closer “Riya” wherein disparate elements converge for a bit of musical punctuation. Lush and atmospheric, we get the sense our hero Kahu might’ve found what they’re looking for, or discovered something worth living for. Is this self-portraiture, or is it more like a mirror? That one’s up to the listener, even if prompts are everywhere. Album artwork from Maori artist Gene Kelly King, for example, features a retro-futurist Polynesian bent, and backup from Pyle as well as bandmates Brandon Cassidy, Djulz Chambers and Cye Wood delves further into emotive instrumentation with violin and viola, plus the aforementioned custom instruments.

Like discovering a narrative from within a new language, digging deeper into musical meaning is also the listener’s job. There’s a world wherein music from Woven Talon is simple, almost stoner-y— one featuring cool beats and synths that sound pleasant enough on their own. Thankfully, Hajiko blends enough together that meaning is myriad, feeling is commonplace. Did I just become a fan for life?

Prey Review Predator franchise finds new life in the distant past

With all due respect to the numerous enjoyable (and not so enjoyable) Predator movies that have come out thus far, Fox’s newest entry in the long-beloved alien/monster/horror/sci-fi franchise is a breath of fresh air, a massive jump in Indigenous representation and, frankly, so damn awesome it’s kind of out of control.

The year is 1719, and a young Comanche woman named Naru (a positively electric Amber Midthunder) finds herself at odds with her place within her community. She’d like to hunt and has the chops to do so, but everyone else in her tribe, including her brother Taabe (newcomer Dakota Beavers), underestimates her ability and pressures her to stick with medicine and food prep and such.

And then the Predator appears with its futuristic weapons and cloaking tech and bloodlust. Not entirely sure what’s roaming the woods outside her village melting wolves and scaring mountain lions, Naru seizes an opportunity to prove herself, but with French colonizers in the area, ferocious animals at every turn and, if you’ll recall, the freaking Predator skulking around invisibly, she might have taken on a little too much.

Prey excels in its subtler efforts every bit as much as it does in its powerful depictions of violence. Yes,

Fledgling filmmaker James Morosini (who has done a ton of acting in shows like American Horror Story and The Sex Lives of College Girls) comes out swinging with his directorial/screenwriting debut, I Love My Dad—a strange trip through the lives of an estranged father and son and a slight critique of how social media can connect us or tear us further apart.

Morosini also plays the lead here, the enigmatic Franklin who, following a failed suicide attempt, moves back in with his mother to try and get on with his life. We don’t learn the particulars of Franklin’s case, but we do know he’s a bit of a gaming nerd, he’s not quite healed and he’s set some healthy boundaries with his father, Chuck, (a brilliantly pathetic Patton Oswalt) after years of missed graduations, birthdays, etc. We learn about these things through a rather clever montage of voice mails from Chuck that will likely feel all too real to some viewers. Flailing and desperate, Chuck creates an online persona using photos nicked from a local diner waitress named Becca (Claudia Sulewski). The idea is that he’ll regain some semblance of closeness to his kid, but Franklin ultimately falls in love with the fake young woman, and Chuck keeps the ruse going despite his better judgment.

you’ll find gore and lasers and a fantastically badass tomahawk on a rope, but with producer Jhane Myers (Comanche and Blackfeet, and you’ll find a Q&A with her on page 25) playing a role in getting the Native content right, you’ll find a love letter to tribal fortitude and elegance.

For every bear fight or gross French trapper who gets got, find a compelling lesson on hunting tactics, familial dynamics and land-use savvy. Even seemingly small elements—such as how Naru wields her bow, how the village operates in the background or, brilliantly, how the French language doesn’t get subtitled—has a stirring effect. It’s also weirdly satisfying that every Native character has a name, while all the white folks are credited like “Frenchman 1.”

Midthunder dominates in the role of Naru and creates a sympathetic character whose motivations might be about survival, but who never los-

This is where Morosini’s writing and acting chops work best, and Sulewski’s take on a ghostly non-person is a delight. Somehow, she manages to create a character we feel like we know without actually knowing, and played against Morosini’s sweet-but-damaged Franklin, it works.

Oswalt, as always, is a delight. How can it be you’d still feel for a man who would have fake phone sex with his son, or who lies to his own girlfriend (a brief appearance from the inimitable Rachel Dratch) so easily? You do, though, and that might have something to do with how we all create our own personas and deploy them across various milieus, online and real-world.

Morosini reportedly based the film on his real-life relationship with his father, and one could probably wax poetic on how acting is a search for the truth.

Together they convey a loving sense of competition common to siblings; together they do some of the craziest stuff we’ve seen on film in some time. It’s a testament to Myers’ dedication, but also to director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) for wanting authenticity and getting it the right way. If you want to catch all the Predator Easter eggs and all the nods to Indigenous culture, Prey screams for multiple viewings. Luckily it’s big on the feels and the cultural cache. It’s just an incredibly fun film to watch.

+ THE CAST; THE MESSAGING - COULD PROVE TOO SUBTLE FOR SOME

Filmmaker Jordan Peele returns to the sci-fi/ horror milieu with Nope, his third feature film and a darkly funny rumination on how and why we consume content—and how the fallout of our obsession tends to exploit those already in compromised positions, particularly people of color.

Here we follow OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) Haywood, estranged siblings from a family of Hollywood horse wranglers descended from the Black jockey featured in Eadweard Muybridge’s 1878 work The Galloping Horse—widely considered the first motion picture ever made. When their father (the legendary Keith David in an all-too-brief appearance) dies in a mysterious one-in-a-billion accident, our heroes find themselves the sole proprietors of the family business just as an unexplainable phenomena takes to the skies above their ranch. Meanwhile, nearby, former child actor Ricky Park (a subtly chilling Steven Yeun) runs a Western-themed amusement park with his family and attempts to make a buck off his own tragic backstory.

Peele, who both writes and directs here, deftly interweaves deceptively simple plot lines about survival into a layered indictment of both capitalism and entertainment, and the positions into which

they put those with the least power. Take, for example, both the Haywood and Park families’ knee-jerk decisions to seek fame and fortune from the thing in the sky rather than considering their own safety.

Their stations aren’t so different, really, and their shared desire to struggle less becomes a central sticking point. What might any of us do if faced with an opportunity to claw our way out of meager lives? Having mouths to feed might not be the most glamorous of stakes but, when we strip away artifice, there are none higher.

Kaluuya once again proves an actor who lives in the quiet intense moments, while Yeun brings an odd charm to what is essentially a faded star role. A short but vital B plot explains his horrifying origins, and you actually come to feel for the guy. Newcomer Brandon Perea shines as well as an employee from a local electronics store who wants to believe in UFOs, but Nope becomes Palmer’s movie so gradually you almost don’t notice until she steps fully into her power. When she does, allusions to kaiju and anime cinema pump up the badassery, and the intensity rises straight through to the climax.

In the end, it feels like questions remain, and Nope likely won’t deter anyone from consuming trauma as entertainment, but when simply living through another day continues to be the best most folks can hope for, unanswered questions and doomscrolling seem about right.
