It was fascinating to learn about the gaps in the Roll during the last major pandemic and about the history of the signers. Take uranium contamination off our land, Navajos urge federal nuclear officials the EPA to move the mine debris to the mill.

Most of the uranium mining and milling on and around the Navajo Nation occurred before environmental regulations were in place to safeguard human health. When the industry shut down in the 1980s, companies closed shop, leaving hundreds of abandoned uranium mines, extensive surface and groundwater contamination, Radon gas releases and vast amounts of radioactive soil and mining debris.

The swirling dust outside was a consistent theme during the Friday afternoon session as residents described a generational struggle with significant health risks from uranium contamination.

“I’m glad we don’t have air sampling going, because that might scare some people,” said Dariel Yazzie, head of the Navajo Nation EPA Superfund program. Yazzie connected the swirling dust outside to historic uranium exposure experienced by residents. Prior to running water being made available to them, people used to haul water in open containers, he said. “Guess what? You’re sitting there with a little bit of dust on you. Everything had dust on it. Where does that dust come from?

ours after the deadly shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on the film set of Rust, a disheveled Alec Baldwin sat across from Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office investigators in a police interview room, questioning what had just happened in the old church at Bonanza Creek Ranch.

The video of actor and producer Baldwin’s first interview with authorities after the incident stands in stark contrast to the polished exchange he had with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in December, about a month after the fatal accident. As he speaks with detectives, Baldwin’s hair is unkempt and beard full; he’s seen wearing a plain blue T-shirt with the neckline stretched out. It was there he learned the shot that came from the prop gun he was holding killed Hutchins, 42.

Baldwin’s appearance was different in the two settings, but his story was the same.

“As I suspected, somebody put a live round in the gun,” Baldwin tells detectives.

How the live bullet found its way into the prop firearm, he says he doesn’t know, but can’t imagine it was done deliberately.

It appears law enforcement is still trying to answer the same question. Sheriff Adan Mendoza, whose office on Monday released a massive cache of videos and documents from

Baldwin says Hutchins was telling him where to point the gun to set up a camera angle, and that he and everyone else believed it to be a “cold gun,” not meant to produce a flash or fire.

n June 7, Santa Fe County voters will decide whether to keep their 54th sheriff, Adan Mendoza, or move on to No. 55 with Santa Fe Police Department Lt. David Webb Jr. Santa Fe County spans 1,900-square miles, encompassing the City of Santa Fe, Española and a collection of small towns and rural communities. With no Republicans on the ballot, the upcoming Democratic primary election will determine whether Mendoza or Webb, both Democrats, gets the job as independently elected sheriff.

They’re both career law-enforcement officers. Mendoza, 49, served 18 years with the sheriff’s department before retiring as a major in 2016 and winning election to his first term in 2018. Webb, 36, has worked at the Santa Fe Police Department for the past 14 years, following a three-year stint with the sheriff’s office.

Mendoza lists running the department during a pandemic among his accomplishments.

“This is something that was unprecedented as a sheriff,” he says. “It was a difficult situation: making sure that people stayed at work. There were severe budget restrictions and we navigated that as an administration, as the sheriff and as a department as a whole.”

Mendoza says he’s updated the department’s use-of-force and pursuit policies, and he’s purchased training simulators for re-

al-life situations, acquired more emergency vehicles and created an automated payment system for fines and fees. It’s the next four years he has his sights on, though.

The No. 1 priority for Mendoza is recruitment and retention, which he says will increase community safety.

“Of course we’re competing with other agencies,” he says. “Now that the governor has given the State Police a raise, it creates a cycle of trying to catch up and trying to be competitive. So that’s going to be our goal—to maintain good salaries and good benefits to try and keep the people we have and recruit more deputies.”

Mendoza wants to expand the Santa Fe Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program, which allows deputies to provide community-based health services to people with addiction, mental or behavioral issues rather than taking them to jail. He also intends on growing the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement program, empowering deputies to report misconduct by other officers.

“I say that we train extensively to police the community, but we really don’t train how to police ourselves sometimes,” Mendoza tells SFR. Should he win re-election, the incumbent plans on bolstering communications within the department to shore up gaps in radio transmissions.

Webb’s journey in law enforcement began when he became a Santa Fe Police Explorer at age 12. He went on to work as a dispatcher for the Santa Fe Regional Communications Center in high school and, at 18, he signed on as a public safety aide with SFPD’s traffic team. A year later, he went to work as a sheriff’s deputy, before moving back to the police

PRINGER—When Boe Lopez isn’t busy searching for solutions to a housing crisis as mayor of this small town of just over 1,000 residents near the Texas Panhandle, he’s working as a cattle rancher and an extension agent for New Mexico State University.

Lopez, like many in Springer, wears a lot of hats. That sort of juggling act spotlights the challenges facing many of the state’s rural communities—including aging infrastructure and a lack of transportation options—which are magnified by a lack of resources both financial and human.

Lopez tells SFR he wants to grow his hometown, yet another pressure in a long list of community demands.

Rural residents hope to gain legislators’ attention for more support of their often overlooked communities during a two-day summit planned for May 12 and 13 at the Roundhouse. Leaders from across the state and Washington, DC will gather to discuss the challenges rural parts of the state face, ranging from health care to infrastructure, with the goal of hammering out some solutions.

“We don’t have mental health services, we need drug rehabilitation, we need activities for our youth, we need services for our seniors, we are trying to introduce public transportation,” says Veronica Serna, chair of the Mora County Commission. (And that was before a massive wildfire destroyed homes in her county and was still burning at presstime.)

The list goes on, she says, and the common denominator is a lack of funding.

Serna’s community relies on grants from the state and federal governments.

But finding and applying for those grants requires personnel that Mora County doesn’t have.

It’s the same for Lopez in Springer, he says.

“The other hindrance sometimes is, you go and get the funds that we need to do the project, but then you have to have the capacity within an employee or employees to be able to administer the grant, to do the reporting that [is] required by the grant,” he says.

In Springer, the town has made significant investments in wastewater treatment facilities, improvements to the airport and cleaning up derelict buildings downtown.

It took three different funding sources to secure the $5.5 million wastewater renovations, which are slated for completion this summer.

Craig Eppler, Springer’s field supervisor, tells SFR the project doesn’t feature fancy upgrades. Instead, it’s aimed at avoiding a catastrophe.

The aging facility was “stripped down to the bone and redone,” Eppler says. The work included installing new sewer lagoons, security fencing and a UV treatment system.

The treatment site sits about a mile away from the Cimarron River, Eppler says.

If a leak occurred it would contaminate the water source and cost millions to clean up.

The town also needs cash to maintain basic services such as the Springer

Correctional Center, which can hold up to 400 women at one time, and to develop and expand, Lopez says.

“There’s no way for the community to grow until you get the infrastructure in place,” he says. “How do you get new businesses to come to town when the power lines are falling down, the transformers are obsolete? And that’s where we were at.”

There has been progress. Lopez notes an increase in air traffic, primarily from ranchers and hunters, that came after improvements to the airport.

Lopez and Serna point to a lack of law enforcement and emergency services personnel as a common challenge.

Lopez says it’s been difficult to keep officers in the community. “They would use these rural communities to get their certifications and then they leave us.”

So Springer tried crafting a contract that required officers to stay at least two years if the town paid for their training and certification, but that didn’t “hold water in court,” says Lopez. “You can’t force someone to stay.”

The town switched to incentives in an effort to keep officers. But that wouldn’t work for the fire department and EMS because volunteers staff both those departments in Springer.

As state Rep. Roger Montoya, D-Velarde, spoke with constituents, he heard more and more about issues like the ones in Springer and Mora County, he tells SFR. His expansive district covers mostly rural areas of Northern New Mexico, including Rio Arriba, Colfax, Mora and San Miguel counties. So he wanted to give rural residents a forum.

Montoya and other elected state leaders will convene next month at the Capitol to “hold space” for rural community advocates to weigh in on their most pressing concerns and help develop legislation to address them. Xochitl Torres Small, the US Department of Agriculture’s undersecretary for rural development, will deliver the keynote speech.

The summit’s timing is critical, Montoya says. With funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act available through grants in the coming months, local governments need support to apply.

Lopez looks forward to the opportunity to speak with other rural leaders, “just to hear some of the things they’re doing and how they’ve gotten creative with getting funding for their projects.”

“This is more than just a problem in Springer,” he says. “Look, it’s a region-wide problem.”

By 1997, the company officially adopted the Santa Fe Playhouse name and, in 2008, it bought the building, which has played home to countless shows since then.

Meanwhile, that renaissance to which Irving referred in 2016 feels like it’s truly under way at the Playhouse under Rikoon’s vision. With new Executive Director Colin Hovde now in the mix and with a more supportive and engaged board of directors than ever, it seems obvious the Santa Fe Playhouse is on the cusp of something special. With all respect to Santa Fe’s myriad talented thespians, the shift includes importing pros from out of town, including El Paso, Texas-based actor Juan-Andres Apodaca, who recently killed alongside Santa Fe actors Alexandra Renzo, Danielle Reddick and Geoffrey Pomeroy in playwright Lucy Prebble’s The Effect, directed by Rikoon.

It’s a daunting and haunting piece about mental health, big pharma and love told with a mix of heady dialogue, dark comedy and, fascinatingly, some fairly heavy monologues. And that’s just one example of the rising theatrical tide.

As the Santa Fe Playhouse looks toward its next 100 years of theater, there is perhaps no better time than to check in for a state of the union. As the Bard would say, now let it work—mischief, thou art afoot.

ust as actor/writer/director Robyn Rikoon was gearing up to take the reins as artistic director of the Santa Fe Playhouse—the oldest continually operating American theater west of the Mississippi River—COVID-19 struck. It’s a common refrain at this point, but one that still stings no matter how often we hear it. Rikoon was set to take over for Santa Fean Vaughn Irving, who moved into the artistic director job in 2015 after a stint in Washington DC, steering the theater from its amateur leanings toward a decidedly more professional operation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with community theater, but what the Playhouse started to achieve under Irving was magical: Bigger, better and more challenging shows from playwrights whose names you knew; pay for actors that amounted to more than a couple hundred bucks for an entire run, including rehearsals; and higher attendance numbers than the Playhouse had seen in years.

“I’m a fan of ‘the rising tide rises all boats,’” Irving told SFR in 2016. “The more good theater that’s in town, the more people will think of Santa Fe as a town where they can see good theater, and I keep seeing this as the beginning of a renaissance here.”

The Playhouse had reinvented itself before.

We can trace its roots back to 1919, and the mysterious artist Mary Austin.

Like so many others of the day, she was lured here by Santa Fe arts grand dame and patron Mabel Dodge Luhan. Austin formed a group of unlikely community theater lovers to start producing shows. By 1922, the troupe had incorporated as the Santa Fe Players— and included one John Gaw Meem, with whose architectural work Santa Fe is lousy. The Players initially performed in the then-new St. Francis Auditorium adjacent to the Plaza, which Meem designed, and over the following 40-ish years, they produced shows under various names, such as the Santa Fe Community Theater, wherever they were able. Lawrence before heading to work at New York City’s MMC Theater under Robert LuPone. By 23, he was in a relationship with a Broadway director and, he says, everything seemed perfect.

“But I didn’t like the person I was becoming,” Williams says. “So I moved onto the Navajo Nation to teach, and I lived in the school there with the students.”

He taught there for three months, then moved on to do the same in Ghana.

He traveled to Spain and Lebanon, but in the end, Williams returned to the theater, and he arrived in New Mexico permanently when his husband took a job at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Williams worked for the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum right up until the pandemic, when he was laid off, but once public health orders relaxed, he auditioned for a show at the Playhouse. He didn’t land that role, but it opened the door for him to join the theater in an administrative capacity. Now, he’s working toward collaborative experiences both in and out of the space, including the aforementioned project with Cashmere+Chocolate and a special blend of coffee from Santa Fe’s 35 North Coffee roasted with the theater’s current production of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance in mind. Wiliams says he’s also working on other partnerships with local businesses.

“The idea would be that we would curate a night for you,” Williams explains.

“Or maybe it’s a day of food pairings and an experiential night at the theater.”

Playhouse Board President Kent Kirkpatrick is all about such experiences—and elevating local theater. He’s a lifelong actor, producer and director with ties to most if not all of Santa Fe’s

directed a Benchwarmers [show of oneact plays]; decided directing was where my heart was and applied for a fellowship at the Kennedy Center in DC, got it and did a year-and-a-half residency, technically a fellowship, and then came back to New Mexico to do a New Mexico Actor’s Lab piece.”

Notably, Rikoon barely takes a breath while delivering the abridged version of her theater journey, and whereas her return to New Mexico might have been triumphant, especially with a new job prospect looming, her partner of two years tragically died in his sleep shortly thereafter.

“I went to the memorial and then came back and interviewed for the Playhouse job,” she says. “And to be completely honest, and I know we’re on the record here, I did not know what I was doing, I did not know what it meant to be an artistic director. But I’m a super-scrappy producer and director, and I love Santa Fe—I believe in the people here, and I believe in the live theater experience. The collective experience of bringing people together? I believe there’s potential for Santa Fe to be a theater town.”

Williams agrees. His own background is impressive as well, particularly for someone from a tiny town in rural Oklahoma. Williams would catch the theater bug at 4 after seeing his grandmother perform. He “fell in love with the idea of transforming oneself,” and he’d go on to attend the Oklahoma Arts Institute, which conducted auditions annually throughout the state. Later came a position studying with legendary Yale theater educator Earl R. Gister, and Williams additionally studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Sarah

Quality and care are certainly on my mind when I meet Rikoon and General Manager Ryan Williams for a bit of chat and chocolate one recent late morning. Rikoon is preparing for a brief trip out of town, and Williams shows me the various chocolates and truffles from local business Chocolate+Cashmere, with whom the Playhouse has partnered. The candies are meant to be part of some upcoming experiential offerings from the theater, Williams says, and he has plenty of other ideas in store. Together, he and Rikoon’s energy is palpable, even on a dark day for the theater.

Rikoon recalls that her first show at the Playhouse was in 2017.

“I did 39 Steps with director Barbara Hatch,” Rikoon tells SFR, proving her bonafides. “I directed 1984 in 2018, then in 2019 came The Happiest Song Plays Last and...I was part of The Elliott Trilogy [with Teatro Paraguas], I did Santa Fe Performing Arts when I was a kid; went to North Carolina School of the Arts for a degree in drama; moved to New York and did TV and movies; started an underground arts collective called Archaic Remnants that did site-specific, immersive work; took a couple years off, traveled the world, got really into circus—specifically Cambodian circus, which I didn’t perform, I just loved— came back to the states, landed in Santa Fe, got re-involved with the Playhouse,

100 Years of Melodrama “Vaughn Irving brought us to a spot that we never could have gotten to without him,” says Playhouse board secretary and longtime Fiesta Melodrama co-director Andy Primm.

“I believe in the organization, and I know the commitment it takes to keep it going, and I feel a lot of what the board does is to keep it on the rails, allow it grow and sustain. I love thinking of it as sustainable, and I want it to last.”

If nothing else, the Santa Fe Playhouse has kept its long-running Fiesta Melodrama, which runs in tandem with Santa Fe’s annual Fiestas celebration, sustainable. A sendup of all things Santa Fe written by an ever-shadowy, secret collection of locals, its roots go back to before anyone alive can even remember, and while its mandate is to be as dumb and silly as possible, it has often been rife with incisive observations doled out in diCOURTESY SANTA FE PLAYHOUSE / PHOTO BY COLIN HOVDE

more notable theater companies, and though he’s performed numerous roles on and offstage at the Playhouse for years, he has served on the board for six.

“What they told me was that the goal for the board was to raise the quality and the professionalism of the Playhouse,” Kirkpatrick tells SFR, “and I said, ‘I can get behind that goal.’”

When it comes to a theater so physically small in a town that seems to thrive on informal relationships, however, that’s a taller order than one might expect.

Kirkpatrick and the rest of the board face a challenging task list, from fundraising and budgeting to working with Rikoon on selecting each season; producing the annual Fiesta Melodrama; and keeping the lights on in yet another Santa Fe arts organization that often does so much with very little. The Santa Fe Playhouse is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and though ticket sales account for some revenue, much of its funding comes from donations and grants. Stacked up against an entire country of small theaters, particularly in a post-pandemic world, it can’t be easy. Even so, for Kirkpatrick and, he says, the rest of the board, the art’s the thing. He appears as Tobias in A Delicate Balance, for example, and he had to get approval through a board vote to even audition. It’s just another way the Playhouse is working behind the scenes to up its professional inner-workings.

“I came to Santa Fe back in ’95, and back in those days there were lots of little theater companies competing for money, audiences, whatever—which is typical of a small town,” Kirkpatrick says. “But we’ve really wanted to change the narrative and become collaborators. Vaughn Irving was brilliant at that, acting in other companies and reaching out to the community, and Robyn has done a great thing and come in, in sort of the same way [as Irving], and I

gestibly humorous ways. Primm has been involved since 2011, and says the show’s upcoming iteration will be the theater’s 100th.

“The melodrama is traditionally set 100 years [from when it is presented], and 1922 was a very interesting era in Santa Fe,” he says. “As I’ve done more research, I’ve found it’s when a lot of things about Santa Fe style were codified—Fiestas, too. In a modern sense, Santa Fe was reinvented in the 1920s, like with pueblo-style architecture, and much of ‘the myth of Santa Fe’ comes from then. To my mind, at some point things stop being myths and just become how they are, and that’s something I find truly fascinating.”

As always, Primm is tight-lipped about the particulars of the show, save to mention that former Playhouse board member Eliot Fisher will make his return to the production this year. Additionally, like last year, the company aims to mount productions outside of its downtown HQ. In 2021, the melodrama hit the stage at Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery for

several performances—not bad considering it was presented in episodic form online in 2020 while COVID-19 raged and roiled. Primm doesn’t know where it will land this year, but Midtown or Southside performances are definitely in the works.

“The main reason I keep coming back [to the Melodrama] is the people,” says actor Felix Cordova, who has performed in the show since 2013.

“Andy Primm, the Playhouse staff, all the wonderful actors we have in our great city, they’ve helped me grow, not only as an actor, but a person. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t fall in love with the Playhouse once they’ve been a part of it. There’s so much history inside those walls.”

Some of that history will likely spill out across the melodrama this year, and it’s always enjoyable to see notable local people and customs get lambasted. Its continued success is likely the sum of many parts, but, Primm says, much of it has to do with the team running things.

“In Santa Fe, there’s no way around the size of the town, that’s just the reality,” he tells SFR. “We’re not a big giant market, but I think that we can actually compete with those markets says a lot about what the organization is doing. We hired Robyn to do what she does, and we trust her. Colin stepped in during the middle of the pandemic and found grants and resources, updated our bylaws and solidified our taxes. Even beyond putting out content—which we’ve done—I’m so proud of the organization and where it is.

I’ve seen a lot of changes, and it’s nice to see that we just keep getting a little better all the time.”

He points to how appallingly little theater workers are paid, and he’s working to improve compensation in Santa Fe. “Historically, actors get paid a pittance in the industry,” he notes. “It’s generally anywhere between $300 and $1,000 for the whole run, and if you break it down to 20 or 30 hours a week, it’s embarrassing. What we’ve done is to break it down to, instead of paying one sum, we pay people every single week.

That also makes it a lot easier for me to advocate for myself when creating and presenting a budget to the board.”

Kirkpatrick also cites Executive Director Hovde as a turning point for the Playhouse, pointing to his professional experience and connections.

Hovde attended the same school as Rikoon, the North Carolina School of the Arts, though he’s a tad older. Like so many, he came to the theater by way of acting, but says that “I realized everybody else in my class was better than I was at acting.”

No matter, though, according to Hovde. He never wanted to tread the boards of Broadway or be showered with roses. For him, it’s about the process and the artistry, not the glitz and accolades. After school, he headed to China to work in freelance theater positions. He returned to America to do the same in Washington, DC, where he crossed paths again with Rikoon. He took over a struggling company called Theater Alliance in DC, and over an eight-year period, he transformed it from a troupe on the brink to a self-sufficient company that still exists today.

“I learned how to balance sheets, write for grants, plan a season, all sorts of things,” he says. “But I’d also become very burnt out and started to wonder if there was a place in American theater for me. I like supporting arts, I enjoy supporting artists, but I don’t like giving speeches or being the center of attention. What I like is for things to be in a place to help artists succeed.”

The Playhouse job seems a good fit for that desire, to the point that Hovde and his longtime partner were willing to leave Seattle, where they were living,

Actor Alexandra Renzo, whose recent performance as Connie in The Effect was unequivocally masterful, says she’s already seeing changes in how actors are treated during Playhouse shows.

“It’s the most I’ve ever been paid in this town—on-par with off-Broadway theaters in New York,” she says. “Not only that, but the process was on-par.

They even have an apartment where they house non-local actors.”

And Renzo would know.

Like Rikoon, she’s seen a bit of success back East with film and television.

She was also a producer for the 2018 Meow Wolf: Origin Story documentary. Renzo has been acting since 15 and attended the New School in New York in pursuit of that. After college, she worked with New York’s LAByrinth Theater Company, a troupe that was originally formed for and by Latino actors who, according to its website, wanted to “interrupt the racial status quo” of the NYC theater scene. Renzo conducted a year-long fellowship there and later founded her own troupe dubbed the Vertigo Theater Company, which focused on site-specific works and a more experiential theatergoing milieu.

As much as I try to get Renzo to talk about herself, though, she keeps coming back to Rikoon.

the last two years than anyone else,” Renzo says. “She just zeroes in on things in a really humble yet strong way, and I think she’s bringing such an eclectic lineup to the Playhouse. I’m so interested in how people are going to stay here, get uplifted and how we start to celebrate the craft in this town.”

Hovde’s credentials will surely help, as will Williams’ quest to create experiences, as well as Rikoon’s overall vision.

“What we’re creating as a synergy between striving for artistic excellence, but also taking more risks and allowing theater to flow with the changes that are happening in bigger cities,” she says. “I think our model is different in that fact that we’re not creating a company.”

To that end, all shows at the Santa Fe Playhouse will henceforth feature open auditions. And though Rikoon rightly points out that such a step adds extra work, it could also result in the types of urgent performances not always possible for long-term companies.

“There is something really beautiful about working with a company and ensemble, because you develop trust and you can get performances out of people you wouldn’t get when you’re constantly working with new ones,” she notes.

“But right now, we want to work with new people. We want to give people opportunities.”

This includes for set and lighting designers. With longtime light tech Annie Liu moving on to other opportunities in Seattle last year, the Playhouse has been working with freelancers more often.

In a show like The Effect, for example, lighting from Maryland-based designer Max Doolittle was a triumph in terms of atmosphere and tension, or even just alleviating those feelings. So often in film, score and sound help establish mood; onstage, the lighting does much of that

heavy lifting. Rikoon says she always looks for local light smiths first when mounting a show, but no matter from whence they came, professional lighting as a priority is just another example of the Playhouse’s commitment to improvement.

Even tackling a show like A Delicate Balance with director L. Zane Jones feels like a small but meaningful step. Albee’s works are complex and full of lengthy dialogue, but a recent preview performance proved that the staff and actors are more than up for the task. This says a lot about trusting audiences, as well.

Albee’s work can be very funny, of course, but also cutting and raw—or perhaps brutally honest. But then, that’s the essence of stagecraft, is it not? It’s meant to cut to the heart of our shared experiences in all of their beautiful, ugly, life-affirming, gut-wrenching intricacies.

“It’s hard for me to be like, ‘Great job, Robyn!’ so I need to practice doing that,” Rikoon says. “We’ve had some wins, but there’s so much more to do. There is always going to be room to grow.”

Once A Delicate Balance closes May 15, Rikoon and company will delve into Everybody by playwright Branden JacobJenkins, a 2018 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the drama category, with Los Angleles-based director Zoe Lesser.

The play tells its story with characters taking on the roles of moral concepts like Kinship, Evil and Strength. Based on the 15th century morality play, The Everyman, Lesser’s version features an onstage lottery through which the fates of each character might change from performance to performance. After that, the Playhouse mounts The Mountaintop by playwright Katori Hall, which has not been cast yet, but did recently pick up director Zuhairah McGill. It’s a relatively simple piece with a stripped-down cast, and it follows Martin Luther King Jr. on the night before he was killed in 1968. Then, of course, there’s the Fiesta Melodrama and various other collaborations, including one ongoing with the Southwest Association for Indian Arts that has found Native dancers taking to the stage. Rikoon also notes that we can

expect shows for children produced by adults, including one based on the beloved Frog and Toad children’s books, talkback sessions and who even knows what else. The Playhouse could still do a lot of things, and that’s kind of the beauty of where it has found itself as an organization.

“The legacy of this company is beautiful,” Hovde tells SFR. “What Robyn and the board and I are all trying to do is to honor that legacy while, at the same time, acknowledging that nothing is un-changeable. We’re finding the next evolution, and I think the staff and the board are really in sync, really locked-in about where we are and how we’re rallying behind Robyn’s vision—and finding the support.”

Hovde freely admits that communication within the community will play a key role. The Playhouse, for example, raised ticket prices slightly this year, by $5 per tier—hardly a hardship for theatergoers, but one that has surprised some, according to Hovde. Still, given the Santa Fe Playhouse’s 100 years of shows, it seems a small price to pay.

“My hope is that I can speak to a variety of audience members, not just our normal demographic,” she says. “Luring people into the theater and blowing their minds...it’s not just picking the shows, it’s got to draw a variety of crowds. And when they see the quality of work and the production value and the acting and directing and lighting, hopefully it piques their interest. To put together a creative season, a creative team—it doesn’t get much better than that.”

NIGHTMARE ALLEY IN THE FLESH Parents who had nightmares about what their Hot Topic teenagers were becoming can now see that terror realized. Paranormal Cirque is a traveling show of insane circus acts, filled with self-described freaks, illusionists, monsters and high-flying acrobats. It isn’t for the faint of heart, and one ought to remember this is a 21+ show for every good reason you can imagine.

It’s frightening, weird and even somewhat sexually-charged, a circus for grown-ups who also like a little shock mixed into their everyday death-defying stunts. Horror fans and adrenaline junkies, this show is tailor-made for you and your socials, which we guess is something we have to tell folks these days to get them to go leave their homes. PERFORMANCE SUN/1 RHYME ON THE DIME What is it about spring that makes words sweeter?

We can’t say, but this poetic duo might help us feel the reasons. Daniel Bohnhorst and Christoper Johnson step onto the stage at Teatro Paraguas to introduce us to their sweet rhymes. People around town may know these writers live and breathe poetry: Bornhorst, a regular Paraguas performer, writer and director, reads from his newest collections entitled Pocket Poems and How Much For A Handful. Johnson is the author of &luckier, published in the acclaimed Mountains West Poetry Series back in 2016. Bohnhorst’s works revel in nature and reflection, while Johnson’s dip into nostalgia and shortcomings.

Ink Wash Is Just So In

Acclaimed Japanese artist brings street art naturalism to Santa Fe Think about how much algorithms shape our world these days. Heck, we might be on the verge of AI writing our film scripts and building our aesthetic pleasures. But Tokyo-based artist Mitsuru Ando takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to our techdriven dystopia while reminding viewers algorithms already existed within our dayto-day world well before computers. Ando’s life-sized paintings manage to capture the world’s grandiose scale while remembering its simple, repeating patterns—the work is a reminder that everything down to the cellular level is an art in itself. “[Ando] uses a lot of traditional calligraphy ink,” Takeo Royer, gallery manager at Kouri + Corrao Gallery, tells SFR. “That’ll be at least as a base, then he’ll move back in with acrylic paints.”

In our ever-scrolling online lives, Royer quite literally discovered Ando’s work on Instagram, and he thereafter became determined to get the artist into his gallery.

Coordinating major artistic shows via DM is easier than ever now, and Royer’s scrolling means Ando’s first solo show in the United States is now open for business. He’s won a multitude of awards in his home country, ranging from the SOMPO Museum of Art in Tokyo, the Makurazaki International Art

Award and the 2016 Sezon Art Award out of Karuizawa, Japan. He channels traditional Japanese painting techniques such as Suiboku-ga, merging familiar ink wash concepts with street art style.

Unlike traditional landscape paintings, Ando’s naturalistic twists and turns overlay a negative space, never allowing the viewer to drop focus on the rhythms. The exhibition’s title lingers in the metaphorical, where broad strokes represent complex details ranging from fog to hillsides. The natural scenes are something playful—blue ribbon-like curls as rivers, thick vines of red hovering over tree trunks painted as simple lines. Ando’s work plays with your eyes, keeping them hooked on the whimsical lines.

“It feels like a radical center of an ancient technique,” Royer continues. “It’s more metaphorical, creating these landscapes in a way of an idealized fantastical perfect world. Multi-faceted performer Ana Gasteyer is probably tired of explaining to yahoos like us how she’s a jazz and theater singer in addition to being a legendary alumna of Saturday Night Live, but the lady’s killed it on Broadway and elsewhere, so you’re just going to have to believe it. Ever heard of Elphaba in Wicked?

Yeah, she did that. Gasteyer even has a couple albums under her belt, and once she comes to Santa Fe to perform alongside her fellow musician/actor/Sirius XM DJ Seth Rudetsky for Broadway Confidential (7 pm Tuesday, May 10. $49-$89. How did you originally come to theaterstyle singing and how did comedy ultimately beat out a Broadway kind of life, at least in the beginning?

Singing in general was the first thing I did well, the thing I thought I was supposed to do when I grew up. My parents were classical music nerds, and musical theater was part of that in my household. I did grow up listening to jazz records...a lot of female jazz vocalists on the radio, on the record player. I went to Northwestern as a voice major, a traditional classical voice major. I did one year of music school and was like, ‘I do not want to do this, I’m not a traditional singer.’ I found the improv people—because Chicago is the birthplace of improv— graduated with a degree in musical theater; moved out to LA and did the Groundlings [improv troupe], but I always sang as a music tool; I always wanted to be in a band, but I don’t think I could have articulated that back then.

When I came to New York to do SNL, by virtue of being in New York, I went to theater all the time. I love the theater, and casting directors sniffed around: ‘Here’s a funny girl, we’ve seen her on TV,’ and they’d call me in for things. And I re-fell in love.

After SNL, which is wild and crazy, the idea of doing something as disciplined as theater was really appealing to me.

One can only assume you’ve become plenty comfortable performing live by now, but comedy and singing can be such different beasts. Does one practice inform the other, and do you find yourself leaning more toward one or the other?

You kind of answered the question in the question. Musicians and comics have so much in common. Classical music can be so rigorous and disciplined that people can lose their spontaneity, but certainly for me, [music and comedy are] hugely married.

This particular show is my favorite show to do because Seth is such an exceptional musician, and he’s also so exceptionally funny, and he’s very collaborative and very fun. Any time he asks, I just say yes. He gets me telling stories I shouldn’t be telling in public.

It’s such a storytelling night. It’s very collaborative, it’s very relaxed and engaged, like his radio show. Seth was a writer for the Rosie O’Donnell Show in the ’90s. We met in the NBC gym because we were working on the same floor. There was an immediate familiarity. We became friends almost instantly, and he championed me when I left SNL considerably. He helped me navigate my way into the Broadway community. He’s a deeply generous soul.

I read an interview wherein you jokingly said your brand might be confusing to people, and I admit I’d only known you as a comic before now. Is there some part of you that enjoys surprising people with your singing chops?

For sure, yeah, and I would love to continue to surprise them in different ways. In some respects, in this particular situation when people come in knowing I sing because I’ve been doing it for such a long time—I have two records out, I’ve done five Broadway shows, three of which were musicals— it’s awesome when people discover it, but it would be awesome when people know it in advance. I think that’s one of the great aspects of my chosen career path, but I don’t make decisions around it needing to be radically different each time. I understand it, because the medium of television is so much bigger than the medium of theater. I was on a highly visible television show for years, but I don’t think it’s that unusual the more I get to know performers. Tina Fey wrote a Broadway show. There are things that people do that surprise you. Steve Martin is a banjo player.

I just saw Sean Hayes in Good Night, Oscar, and he is so triumphant playing ‘Rhapsody in Blue.’ I joked to him, ‘How did you fake that?’ And he said, ‘You would be shocked how many people don’t know I play the piano.’

I feel fortunate that I have put in the time to refine it. You’re a better singer when you do it more. Broadway in many ways is the thing that brought me up to speed.

Eight shows a week is just an impossible muscular standard. You end up good.

Erin Wade continues trying to help the planet with reusable, eco-friendly items

hen last we checked in with Vinaigrette/Modern General owner Erin Wade roughly two years ago, it was right at the horrible start of the pandemic, and she’d just written an open letter to the food delivery app people about how they were making things untenable for restaurants. Before that, however, in 2019, things were looking better for Wade at her restaurants, particularly at Vinaigrette, as she had just launched the Summer of Sustainability, a program through which diners can make use of sustainable metal containers for takeout orders and also return compostable remnants of meals to the restaurant. That program is ongoing, but now, as the world manages to get back into worrying about things other than COVID-19, Wade is taking the next steps toward a more environmentally-conscious footprint and world with a new campaign that encourages consumers to “break up with plastic,” and one which has identified some of the tools to help us do so.

Henceforth, at Modern General, you’ll be able to purchase reusable products that aren’t made from the same plastics clogging our oceans, littering our everywhere and even showing up in our blood. It is, of course, challenging that the onus has been placed on individuals at a personal level—polluting corporations could do more to reverse the tide of climate change than people picking up reusable straws ever will—but since the powers that be have proven they’re not about to start changing, small things can go a long way.

“I’m trying to come up with gentle ways to not life-shame people,” Wade tells SFR. “How do you get people to not think these little things don’t matter, and to change their lifestyles? We’re all really overwhelmed and bummed out—there’s a lot of bad news always, and I think it kind of has this opposite effect, this counter-productive effect of making us feel paralyzed.”

“The pandemic renormalized a lot of waste, even just with gloves,” Wade notes.

“The amount of gloves a restaurant has to use is crazy, and a lot of places switched to plastic cups. We’ve all been roped into these things we need for basic life functioning, and we’ve just got to take a moment to reintegrate [more sustainable practices] into our lives.”

Here’s a breakdown of some of the products we’ve discovered and used through Wade’s new initiative, and which are available at Modern General now. Note, also, that Wade is hard at work on a book titled Why Restaurants Matter, and we’ll tell you more about that as soon as we’re able. For now, remember that while the shape of the

world feels unfair, it always feels good to try and do a little better.

Like cling wrap but reusable, these little beeswax wraps from Germany are great for fruits and snacks and anything else you want to keep fresh without tearing through a million yards of plastic film that doesn’t really cling to things that well to begin with.

Burstenhaus Redecker Spültuch Cotton Cloth ($4.95)

It’s a simple cotton cloth, but it’s both soft and absorbent and dries quickly. It’s incredibly soft and absorbant, too. German companies make good products, too, that’s just a fact.

This box of four reusable silicone “bags” proudly touts on the side that the product eliminates thousands of single-use baggies.

They look and operate like Zip-loc stuff, they’re just a little heavier (which actually connotes quality, probably). I filled one up with Goldfish crackers, and none of them crumbled in my shoulder bag.

Return to Form Institute of American Indian Arts reopens black box theater with William Yellow Robe works

etween the Santa Fe Playhouse on the cover and SNL alum Ana Gasteyer in the 3 Questions section on page 24 for her upcoming Lensic Performing Arts Center singing performance, this edition of SFR seems to have inadvertently become an informal theater issue. To sweeten the deal, meet Jonah Winn-Lenetsky, the chair of the Institute of American Indian Arts’ theater program—one which sat mostly dark during the pandemic, but which makes its triumphant return to operations May 6 and 7 with works by playwright and former IAIA writing professor William Yellow Robe (Assinboine), who died last year. We figured with everything else going on theatrically right now, it would be an opportune moment to check in with Winn-Lenetsky about what the reopening means for students, and indeed the city itself.

SFR: Who are you, what do you do and why do you do it?

Jonah Winn-Lenetsky: I see myself predominately as a scholar and as a director and, occasionally, as an actor. I am the chair of performing arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts on the very edge of Santa Fe. This role is brand new to me, I’ve only been the chair this semester. Shelia Rocha was the last one, but I’ve been a professor since the department launched four years ago.

In 2018 we launched [performing arts] as a major. We have basically four people on our team. Myself and [Rocha] are the only professors in the department, and then we have Fulbright Scholar Sebastien Lange, who is working with us this year and has come to us from France via Mexico—and who directed the [one act play], Sneaky. We also have a technical director, Catherine Owens, and our main focus right now is theater, specifically Indigenous theater, the history and theory of/application and performance; and we put on a little bit of music and dance, but our main focus is theater.

The theater was closed during the pandemic, at least for live performance.

What makes now the right time to get back into the weeds?

We were building momentum and putting on a lot of shows, right up through the fall of 2019, so we’d been going about a year-and-a-half when, as with everything, things slammed to a halt. We performed small things for the school, but the entire campus was closed for the rest of 2020 and some of 2021. So, when the campus reopened, there were all the variants and masks, and we only put on small events for invited audiences. This is the first time we’ve opened up our theater space to the public—and it’s only 70 seats. Part of the performance will happen outside, though, but this is the first time we’re having a big pop-up.

It’s for our students, because we have a cohort of majors who started either immediately before or during the pandemic, and they’ve been unfortunately performing for tiny audiences or streaming recorded stuff. They’re very talented and working hard, and they deserve the opportunity to perform for an audience, and to get more experience training as performance specialists. They need that. I think the other point I’d make is simply that it seems things are opening back up again. It really feels like theater is starting to happen again, and people are starting to gather again.

The pandemic is by no means over, but it seems right now that the vaccines are really helping. It seems a little bit less threatening.

our students are getting work in film and TV, both professionally and in school films, and they haven’t had that experience of performing in front of people. You can feel the energy change [when performing live], the transformation, the excitement.

Has the long lull resulted in excited students? I would imagine everyone is working extra hard to produce something memorable for this return to performance.

They’re very enthusiastic. They’re excited and maybe a little bit nervous, because we’re inviting in an audience.

As for the first production, why did you choose William Yellow Robe, beyond his obvious ties to the school?

He does have that tie to IAIA, but I think, first and foremost, William passed away after a long illness less than a year ago, so it’s really our first opportunity to honor him and celebrate his work. He contributed extensively to Indigenous theater. He’s very prolific. I’m not even sure I know every play he’s written, but we often teach them. He taught here in the past, but he’s a playwright who has written very realistically and starkly in a lot of ways about life on the Rez, and I think he’s contributed a ton to both self-perception, and also audience perception of what Rez life is like. His writing is darkly powerful, insightful and funny. There’s a lot of humor in what we’re doing, but his plays are really about human struggles, personal struggles, relationships within families.

I’ve interviewed Native actors who say Native culture loops back around in Hollywood every so many years. As someone who is working with young

people, the next gen of performers and writers and such, do you think Native storytelling will continue to be more commonplace on stage and screen?

My future vision is very limited, but if I can prognosticate, I certainly hope so. I think the one boon, and not just for Indigenous people, has been the way that Hollywood has lost some of its grip on entertainment thanks to the internet, the pandemic, smaller indie projects and streaming studios. So yes, most of the money is still coming out of Hollywood, but I think even the streaming studios are more open to a diversity of voices. There’s an interest in hearing different types of stories rather than mainstream, white, hetero stories. Will it last? One of the biggest changes I’ve seen is those stories are being told by Indigenous writers and actors and storytellers, and I think that is a big shift.

What do you suppose the future holds for the theater program at IAIA now that people can attend again?

Our hope is to keep presenting interesting, experimental new work by Indigenous artists, as well as some of the classics, such as what we’re doing in this case. Hopefully more performances. We’re building our technical and performance program, and we hope to use that to host more concerts, dance performances—not just theater. Definitely being able to do more plays would be so amazing for our students and will hopefully give something to the public.

Visiting schoolchildren during National Poetry Month

pril is National Poetry Month. Of course, to my mind, National Poetry Month, like Black History Month, is a bit of a redundancy, since every month is an occasion to revisit art and learning. But the calendar this April includes an exceptional number of poetry events. Please go and enjoy them if you should so happen upon them; I myself will spend a considerable portion of April “among schoolchildren.”

If you didn’t catch my reference, “Among School Children” is an early 20th century poem by William Butler Yeats in which he obligatorily visits an elementary learning institution. In the piece’s best-known line, Yeats calls himself, “a sixty-year-old smiling public man,” implying that he is feigning interest while amongst the youths. He appears to forget that he is even at a school halfway through the poem. Yeats, alas, is not a precursor of today’s interest in the intersection of poetry and public education.

In 1970, the American poet Kenneth Koch published the book Dreams, Wishes, and Lies, which recorded his successes at teaching children poetry. Koch’s book enhanced the demand for arts education, and, more specifically, poetry in schools, yet I suspect some poets are shyer than others, or stodgier than others. For some—like the esteemed Yeats—introducing poetry to schoolchildren isn’t going to be their cup of tea. Teaching children, however, is a specialized task that deserves much respect, and I earn wisdom

and delight out of visits to fourth, fifth and sixth grade classrooms in Santa Fe. I enjoy introducing myself to children still scrawling with No. 2 pencils, still learning to pronounce words and only now making their first forays into using language tools. Past 50 years old, I have re-entered a world of intercoms, pencil sharpeners, recess periods, class bells and hordes of students scurrying down the halls. It’s energizing, and nowhere else in Santa Fe could be so pregnant with possibility.

On an obvious level, classrooms are a fount of cute stories. Yes, you’ll find those kinds of “kids say the darndest things” narratives that make adults laugh. I have my own favorite, which is the fifth grader who asked me to repeat my initial lesson.

“Hmm,” he asked. “You told us to imagine a picture, and put pieces of it in a poem?”

“Yes,” I answered.

“And you say if we’re honest, there will always be a part of ourselves in our poem?”

“Yes.” Later, when I projected one of my own poems in front of the class, he made a quizzical face and asked, “What part of you is in that poem?”

I couldn’t give him a direct answer. I can’t even give a direct answer to adults who ask me questions about where creativity comes from, but the child is already asking sophisticated questions.

I am ostensibly “teaching” poetry, but the process hinges on enticing the children into conversations. I tend to think of myself as fostering aesthetic experiences using texts directed at pupils so young they haven’t previously attached much meaning to concepts like aesthetics. For example, I once showed a group of school children a little ditty of a

poem by e.e. cummings called “Seeker of Truth.”

It reads: “seeker of truth follow no path all paths lead where truth is here” Then I hit the children with the question: What are you a seeker of? Of truth?

Of success? Of wealth? Or love? Where and how have you been seeking your goals? I ask them to find metaphors describing their search. The answers subsequently become the titles and the content of their own poems. OK—teachers have commented that I may risk going a bit far above the children’s heads. I accept the criticism. However, teachers, administrators and I agree on the rewards. The administrators and educators expect poetry lessons to reinforce

traditional educational goals; the lessons increase vocabularies, train children to recognize nouns, verbs and adjectives, and write complete sentences. While I am happy to be a tool to enhance the children’s performance on tests, I tend to view myself less like a bringer of knowledge than a presenter of mirrors. My mission is to instill a lasting memory of a day in school during which they created something.

I present children with poems they have probably never seen before. The poems are like mirrors because the children see in them their own struggles, interests and their intrinsic potential reflected. If the poems let them glimpse a special, emotional and empathetic part of themselves, they usually loosen up.

The children often begin by asking me, “How do you write a poem?”

“I don’t know how to write a poem,” they sigh.

Adults often suffer the same fears and make the same protestations. My treat comes if they proceed to eventually write their own—if they craft mirrors based upon their own experiences.

For National Poetry Month, I’ll leave you with an observation that I’ve already implied: Teaching children isn’t necessarily different than teaching adults. The results may be paltry or passable, but they may also be brilliant. For practiced poets, or children, poetry depends a lot on sudden inspiration, spontaneity and catharsis, or an intense relationship with a subject. Poetry involves practice. It helps develop language skills. What remains strangely fascinating is that poetry doesn’t entail a physically demonstrable skill that can be easily tested.

Poetry is a reflection of consciousness.

Despite jumping on the social medias last week to bemoan my lack of interest in yet another entry in the seemingly never-ending onslaught of viking-based entertainment of late, I found myself at Violet Crown alongside the other beardos to see The Northman from The VVitch director Robert Eggers. Eggers sure makes pretty movies, and if you don’t believe that, please see The Lighthouse immediately, for it is a masterpiece.

Eggers’ works are generally dense-adjacent, symbolist films wherein folks are undone by obsession and wherein toxic masculinity turns men into something inhuman while the people around them—or they themselves—suffer horrible fates. He also likes taking his sweet damn time and never shies away from ugly violence. These aren’t new concepts by any means, though the juxtaposition of gorgeous cinematography and even more gorgeous backdrops against spilled blood and the dark motivations of man don’t hurt the timeless messaging.

In The Northman, Alexander Skarsgård plays a viking—a berserker, no less (Google it)—who sets out with vengeance on his mind but then, like, also finds a little bit of love along the way. It’s a little bit Hamlet (Skarsgård’s dude’s name is even Amleth), a little bit Lez Miz-meets-Oedipus, a little bit Count of Monte Cristo and a whole lot of hard to watch. Seems Amleth’s kingly dad (Ethan Hawke) got got by his brother (Claes Bang), who also kidnapped the queen Gudrún (Nicole

For those who’ve yet to fall under Michelle Yeoh’s spell (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, anyone?!

Crazy Rich Asians?!), make it your business to head into theaters for Everything Everywhere All at Once, a brilliant sendup of the evermore commonplace concept of infinite realities—you know; the multiverse.

Brought to us by the inimitably strange directing team of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka Daniels (the auteurs behind the bold and beautifully bizarre Swiss Army Man), it’s the type of film that should sate the heady science nerds, the self-assigned cultural elite and those who just plain want to see a weird movie rolled up into a sci-fi/rom-com/ kung fu/family story.

Here we follow Evelyn (Yeoh) and Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan of Goonies and Temple of Doom fame), a long-married couple who live above the middling laundromat they run together. As the Wangs face an IRS audit from a seemingly heartless agent (Jamie Lee Curtis, who gets gloriously weird), Waymond wants a divorce, and their daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) isn’t helping so much as she seems hellbent on using her girlfriend to freak out her folks.

It’s a bit of a humdrum life until an alternate-universe Waymond appears, kung fu fanny pack in hand, to inform Evelyn she’s the last hope in facing a threat to the infinitely layered universes that make up reality.

SHOT; NOT BORING - WE DONE WITH VIKINGS YET?

Kidman), leading to decades of festering resentment turned to seriously creative ideas for face-stabbing.

When Amleth does indeed catch up to his dear old uncle with a little help from a Norn (a Norse fate-making witch kind of deity) played by Björk, it’s off to Iceland for clobberin’ time; a simple plan right up until he develops the hots for an enslaved Russian named Olga (the ever-impressive Anya Taylor-Joy who is in every movie ever made) and a little bit of a hallucination issue. Even so, Amleth believes himself fated to succeed, and no amount of beatings, bloodsport, cave monsters or shitty family mechanics are going to stop him.

Skarsgård feels borderline silly with his massive, hulking muscles and hunched gait and broad shoulders glistening in the overcast Icelandic wild. Taylor-Joy grounds his character in better motivations than hate, though, and she’s all about breaking men’s minds. Bang makes an imposing enough villain, though he’s really more of a presence or cipher for evil, and we don’t learn what drives him until way later. It isn’t self-generated. Kidman (who played Skarsgård’s wife in HBO’s

Using tech to take over the consciousnesses of their multiverse counterparts, Waymond and Evelyn can instantly learn the skills of their other life versions, and that’s precisely how a middle-aged laundromat owner becomes a master of martial arts, a flawless singer, a talented movie star and, ultimately, learns acceptance.

Yeoh is absolutely riveting as the dissatisfied mother, and whereas her kung fu skills have always been apparent, here she shows off her acting chops.

It’s a pleasant surprise to learn she’s a secret goofball, and her journey feels reminiscent of Jennifer Lawrence’s in Aranofsky’s Mother!, only more focused and relatable. In the quieter moments, even the very funny ones, Yeoh’s range feels unmatched.

Quan, meanwhile, steals the show often, and his presence as the all-important jester archetype softens Yeoh’s character, which is not to say he isn’t a badass in his own right. Hsu might be the true breakout, though, pulling double duty as the chaotic daughter and the even more chaotic villain.

Of course, nothing is simple in Daniels’ vision—and three cheers to Jamie Lee for nailing emotional scenes with literal hot dog fingers.

The humor cuts the tension while helping to make sense of the converging timelines, though it might help to have read comic books one’s whole life. Even still, one needn’t have a physics degree to get into why Everything Everywhere All at Once is so fun. It begs for repeated viewings, not least of which

Big Little Lies but here plays his mother because fuck Hollywood) turns in one of the better performances of her career, however, which kind of deflates the moments she isn’t onscreen, at least in the later bits wherein she emerges as a more powerful creature than seemed possible.

Moviegoers will likely take The Northman’s ending any number of ways, but hopefully realize how even getting the things over which we’ve obsessed doesn’t always mean it feels good—or is good for those around us. Someplace in there, find reasons to dislike white supremacy even more than you already should, and also some satisfying homage to other shocking films (no spoilers, though). The payoff, however, does not particularly satisfy, though that’s kind of the point.

for Yeoh’s career-defining performance. People will talk about this one for years to come, and it’s likely to inspire a whole new generation of filmmakers. WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR

+ FREAKY SET-UP - BECOMES MONOTONOUS

You know at least one person who’s going to watch We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and then describe it as a brilliant commentary on people who live online. “It’s a little rough around the edges,” they’ll say, “but brilliant nonetheless.” Then there’s everyone else who’ll be left perplexed by director Jane Schoenbrun’s first full-length narrative film. Slow and methodical horror is an incredibly difficult genre to pull off successfully, but it’s still clear we’ve got a divisive film on our hands.

Casey (Anna Cobb, in an excellent debut performance) would like nothing more than to live inside a horror movie. In the film’s 10-minute single-shot opening, she stares into her webcam and declares, “I want to go to the World’s Fair,” over and over again.

The fictional online roleplaying world where people live in a horror-movie like environment has a tendency to turn users into something strange—people who have an inability to feel pain, who develop strange

scabs or even get pulled inside their computers. Do you know about the online Creepypasta stuff? That would be a good primer to help viewers understand.

It’s meant to be fun, but as Casey is initiated into the game, an older man named JLB (Michael J. Rogers) takes a special interest in her well-being, and her dark thoughts begin revealing themselves.

World’s Fair’s atmosphere is tense and creepy, its silence completely mesmerizing. It’s so uncomfortably isolating you can’t help but feel sad for Casey’s life at its outset as it’s like an isolation that reflects a quiet inner terror inspired by the conditions of the world around her. Cobb’s superb performance adds to the film’s intriguing set-up, yet its commentary isn’t as clear as it ought to be. After so long in this relatively short film, one wishes we could just get on with it.

Despite a tense start, we aren’t granted any kind of satisfying payoff. Listen, we know young people are more reliant on the internet in a way that seems to baffle older generations, and they use it to build connections lacking from their personal lives.

Actually, that might be a more universal thing. Even so, a more steadily building energy, even a slight one, would have worked wonders. Schoenbrun certainly knows how to kick off a story, but there are near-constant “this is my first feature,” vibes. The more studied horror geeks might find World’s Fair riveting, and if you’re one of them it’s worth a shot.

As a whole, however, it flounders, even if there’s no denying how absolutely creepy the whole thing gets.
