THE SET An explanation for set design is not typically present in a playbill. However, in this modern interpretation of The Crucible, elements of the set take on a symbolic life of their own.
Stage Left Wall – Vertical Blinds Notice the effect when light streams through the vertical blinds, bending, refracting, and casting shadows.
Chalkboards Whether spoken aloud or written only to be erased, words have the potential to inflict damage.
Stage Right Wall – Windows Those who live in a glass house should not throw stones. Debris from outside enters the environment only when the characters themselves open the windows and invite it in. THE CRUCIBLE 3
DIRECTOR’S NOTES When I was nine, I lost my grandma on my mom’s side. She was the very quiet, sweet and nurturing grandma that always had little treats hidden away for her grandkids. The reason I bring this up is because she used to have a saying before she passed, “wherever you turn to in times in trouble, that’s God to you.” As a kid, I didn’t understand how deep the sentiment was. Later, as I experienced things that adults have to go through, I started to really see what she meant. Money troubles, stresses, anxieties, failures, regrets, resentmentsany times I’ve gone through those experiencesI’ve turned to God. I hope I never forget that quote of hers. I hope I’m able to pass it on to my own kids and grandkids one day. The community at the center of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is experiencing troubles, resentment, jealousy, betrayal, loss, and grief on many levels. What unfolds is the cascading domino effect of what can happen when people resort to scapegoats and finger pointing to solve their issues rather than God. Is this story based on the true events that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600’s? Yes. Was this story written in order to serve as an allegory for the hearings held by Senator McCarthy in response to the fear of Communism in the country? Yes. Could this story also serve to remind us of the dangers of spreading rumors and slander at those around us? Yes. And all the while (English teachers, I
4 SANTA FE CHRISTIAN FALL PLAY 2023
apologize for starting the sentence with “and”), high school students all over still deal with the repercussions and consequences of spreading rumors, slandering others, and what the fallout of these events can be. The Christian evangelist Leonard Ravenhill said, “notice, we never pray for folks we gossip about, and we never gossip about the folks for whom we pray. For prayer is a great deterrent.” My mission in life revolve around helping students- and so this is geared to them. For those of you who have experienced rumors, lies, gossip, etc. – whether it be on the acting or receiving end – focus instead on turning to God in times of trouble. Turn gossip to prayer. And take care of each other. It’s truly been a pleasure to work with these students on this production. I hope that this story is able to touch hearts and minds- and that we remember that when we give in to fear and superstition, our compass isn’t pointed at God. I have even gone through my own bouts of stress and anxiety recently, and without getting into any detail, there is a message in the Bible that has been a source of calm for me, “Be still and know that I am God,” (Psalm 46:10). Enjoy the show. Pray for one another, and in times of trouble- turn to God.

DIRECTOR BIO Matthew Corsaro is so proud to be a
part of the amazing visual and performing arts program at Santa Fe Christian. He is humbled to be surrounded by such a talented and creative artistic team and is always amazed by his students’ focused hard work. This is Matt’s ninth year directing productions at SFC, with The Crucible being his 28th show at SFC and his 45th show in his overall career. Matt’s love and passion for theater sparked in the fifth grade while watching a high school production of Godspell. It was during his own high school theater experience that Matt knew he was called to become a drama teacher himself. While the journey and path to become a high school drama teacher took a while, with many twists and turns along the way, Matt was able to finally find a home and true place
of belonging at SFC. Working with students in the cast and crew is one of his greatest joys. Helping them through the various challenges in their lives is really what is at the heart of the job. Family is extremely important to Matt. He wouldn’t be the strong man he is without the love, support, and patience from his beautiful wife, Carlie. He would also like to give a very special thank you to his two amazing kids, Nico and Cami, who remind him every day why family, following your heart, and pursuing happiness are so valuable. CAST Annabelle Andriany is a
sophomore and is so excited for her fourth production with SFC, The Crucible! She performed in Peter and the Starcatcher as well as The Old Man and the Old Moon, and worked crew for the spring musical, Beauty and the Beast. She would like to thank the crew and everyone else who worked behind the scenes to put this production together. Happy (late) Halloween, and enjoy the show!
Giada Bianchi
is 15 years old and a sophomore. This is her third show, after being cast in SFC’s Beauty and the Beast spring musical, and the summer play The Old Man and The Old Moon (Young Woman). Some activities she enjoys include playing the violin, reading, and Mario Kart. Giada would like to thank Mr. C. and her family for encouraging her to get involved in theater, and thank God for blessing her with this amazing opportunity. Nicholas Bishara is a
sophomore who first joined theater in 5th grade. He has performed productions such as Madagascar, Beauty and the Beast and Young Man in The

Old Man and The Old Moon. Nicholas has also participated in SFCtv, tennis, and football. He would like to thank his family, God, and all of his amazing teachers (especially Mr. C!) for supporting him in this show.
Michelle Bryant is so
excited to be in The Crucible! This is her eleventh production with SFC. Outside of rehearsals, she can be found reading, writing, and hanging out with friends. She would like to give huge thank you’s to Mr. Corsaro and the cast and crew for all of their hard work to make this show happen, and for being such welcoming, supportive, and loving people. She gives glory to God, and thanks Him for the opportunities and amazing people she has found through theater over the years.
Isabella Burer
is a sophomore and is so excited to be apart of this show! Some of her past credits include Little Sally, Urinetown (SDMT), Annie, The Play That Goes Wrong (SFC), Betty Lou Who, How The Grinch Stole Christmas (The Old Globe), and many more. When not performing, Isabella enjoys singing, writing, and spending time with her family. Isabella would like to thank Mr. C.for giving her the opportunity to be a part of this show.
William Chang is a junior, and he is

Tyler Ellis is

Tara Hall is a
junior and is excited to be a part of The Crucible. This is her eleventh show with SFC and thirteenth overall. Zach Harrington has
performed in two SFC productions, his first being Beauty and the Beast. Zach is glad that he listened to Mr. C. about participating in theater.

Alesea Haynes is a
bright, intelligent, and charismatic young lady in the 11th grade. She is ecstatic to be starring as Tituba in her very first production The Crucible. She is also a talented basketball player and leader. At first Alesea was overcome with nerves and questioned her ability to perform this role being alongside her qualified, talented, and experienced peers. She has become more confident and evolved as a person and is grateful to have found a family in this cast and crew.
Maddy Hoffman has
been in several plays and enjoys theater and getting to be around such a fun THE CRUCIBLE 7

Sadie Holsten
is a junior at SFC, and she is beyond excited to play the role of Betty Parris in The Crucible. This is Sadie’s tenth show at SFC, and she is so grateful for Mr. C. and the community theater has given her.
Mark Mahaffey is a
junior and this is his ninth high school show. Some of his favorite roles have been Flick, Christmas Story (SDMT), Laurie, Little Women (SFC), and Ralphie, Christmas Story (Pickwick Players). Mark loves dirt biking and sleeping. He would like to thank Mr C. for helping him have a deeper connection to theater. John 13:34
Emma Phillips
is a sophomore performing in her second high school show! Other than engaging in theater she loves to ride horses and spend time with her friends. Chloe Rayners
is so excited to be performing in her sixteenth show, The Crucible! Some of her favorite roles include: Smee (Peter and the Starcatcher) and Meg March (Little Women). Hazel Roy
is a junior and is thrilled to be a part of The Crucible. This is her fourteenth show at SFC and she has loved every minute of her time on stage. She has enjoyed being a part of The Old Man and the Old Moon (Mabelu), Tarzan (Kala), Beauty and the Beast (Silly Girl), Peter and the Starcatcher (Fighting Prawn), 42nd Street, and many more! When not performing, Hazel enjoys reading, dancing, and hanging out with friends. She would like to thank Mr. C. for everything he has done to put this show together, her family for being her greatest encouragers, and her fellow cast mates for an amazing show.
Liz Ryan is in her second high school production as a freshman and fifth SFC show.
Her hobbies include writing, art, and playing competitive games with her family. She wants to thank Mr. C., the cast, crew, and the Lord for inspiring us and making this show come to life.
Taylor Schneider is a

Luke Seim
Duncan Schuck is a junior
and thrilled to be a part of his eighth SFC high school production. Of the shows he’s been a part of, his favorites include 42nd Street, Play That Goes Wrong, and Beauty and the Beast. In addition to theater, he contributes his talents to SFC’s Eagle Band, Chamber Chorale, ASB, and Improv Team. Arden Sur has been involved in musical theater her whole life. She is passionate about all things singing, dancing, acting, and more. This is her ninth show at SFC and she is grateful for all the memories and opportunities provided from rehearsals, to Improv, to Cabaret. When she’s not constantly singing she can be found playing piano, guitar, and ukulele, reading, exploring, and participating in Scouts, and most importantly, napping! She would like to thank her family for all the support over the years and the Performing Arts Department including Mr. C., Ms. Stine, Michelle, Mr. B., and so many more people. Noelle Merritt is a freshman and is

Christian Rayner is thrilled to be a part of his first SFC show. He is excited to share his help with the rest of the crew in any way he can. He loves music, talking to his friends, and playing the trumpet.
