Director
Matthew Corsaro is so proud to be a part of the amazing visual and performing arts program at Santa Fe Christian. He is humbled to be surrounded by such a talented and creative artistic team and is always amazed by his students’ focused hard work. This is Matt’s eighth year directing productions at SFC, with Beauty and the Beast being his 24th show at SFC and 41st show in his overall career.
Matt’s love and passion for theater sparked in the fifth grade while watching a high school production of Godspell. It was during his own high school theater experience that Matt knew he was called to become a drama teacher himself. While the journey and path to become a high school drama teacher took a while, with many twists and turns along the way, Matt was able to finally find a home and true place of belonging at SFC. Working with these students in the casts and crew is one of his greatest joys, and helping them through the various challenges in their lives is really what is at the heart of the job.
Musical Director
Vlad Bgatov is in his sixth year at Santa Fe Christian and has enjoyed every moment of it! He revels in working with talented young people, together creating the best performances for the glory of God. Mr. B is thankful to work with great directors: Matthew Corsaro, Amy Stine, and David Hall. Directing the music for Beauty and the Beast was especially fulfilling. Mr. B notes that while Beauty and the Beast is a classic and very well known show, the cast rose as true professionals by joyfully dedicating themselves to rehearsals and growing vocally, to put on a wonderful show.
Students and families at SFC hold a special place in Mr. B’s life. There is a connection with students that runs beyond musical tones, and that brings jubilation, praise, and reverence to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For

Family is extremely important to Matt. He wouldn’t be the strong man he is without the love, support, and patience from his beautiful wife, Carlie. He would also like to give a very special thank you to his two amazing kids, Nico and Cami, who remind him every day why family, following your heart, and pursuing happiness are so valuable. Jeremiah 29:11 everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. Soli Deo Gloria!”
Choreographer
Amy Stine is so thankful to be working on this Beauty and the Beast production at SFC. She grew up training at San Elijo Dance Academy. Since then, her passion for dance has never left. She graduated from Benedictine College, where she received a BA in education with a concentration in fine arts. She performed on the Raven Dance Team and competed at NDA Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida, for three consecutive years. She has choreographed several productions throughout San Diego County, teaching dance and performing arts, in venues including Moonlight Youth Theatre, Thrive Learning Center, and Cathedral Catholic High School. She has also been a recipient of the National Youth Arts awards for Outstanding Choreography for her work on SFC productions of Annie (2015), Godspell (2016), and Newsies (2019). She is currently the coach for both the SFC Upper and Middle School dance troupes. She would like to thank Matt, Vlad, and Dave for always being so awesome to work with, Amy Kennard

Conductor
Dave Hall began teaching music to 4th –12th graders in 1989. Presently, Mr. Hall is the Band Director and AP Music Theory teacher at Santa Fe Christian. For 11 years, he wrote and arranged music for the Tri-City Church choir and orchestra; he was the director for three of those years. Music students under Mr. Hall’s direction have won the prestigious Biola band competition three times. In 1999, they won an audition to perform in an international music competition in Sydney, Australia. In 2005, his school band, along with other ACSI musicians, went to the Bahamas as the first group from the USA to perform in the Bahamian Independence Day Celebration. He was named Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2008-2009 in San Diego by the Veterans of Foreign War. He received the 2012 Band Educator of the Year Award by the California Music Educators Southern Section. Mr. Hall received his BA in Music Education from San Diego State University and his MM in conducting from Southern Oregon for her constant encouragement, her family and friends for their love and support, the wonderful cast and crew, and her Lord Jesus Christ for the beauty of the arts and the gift of choreography.

1 Corinthians 16:14
It’s my distinct privilege to welcome you to Santa Fe Christian’s 2023 Spring Musical, Beauty and the Beast. I’m sure that many of you are familiar with this timeless story in which a brave and bold young woman finds herself locked in the castle of a prince who has been turned into a hideous beast. Throughout this story, amidst the characters, songs, and dance numbers – it all comes down to being able to see the beauty within someone.
This story is full of change. Our prince changes into a beast. Our heroine, Belle, changes the way she trusts the Beast. The Beast changes his demeanor, temper, and behavior as he learns that the only way to break the spell is for him to change from within first. Our antagonist, Gaston, changes from a man to more of a monster, while the Beast changes from a monster to a man. It’s this theme (plus a second) that is also such a regular part of the growing up experience.
When these seniors were just Freshmen, their opening night of Bye Bye Birdie was cut short by our closure from COVID. As I look at that very same group that is now leading as our senior class, I am astounded by the amount of change they’ve undergone. They’ve challenged themselves, reached new heights in academics, athletics, and the arts. They’ve learned more about who they are, what’s important to them, and what kind of legacy they want to leave behind once they graduate. It’s absolutely an honor to see them close out their high school theater careers in this show. I can’t wait to see where life takes them.
The second theme I’ve come across in this show is about love. Now you may be thinking, “Sure, of course. The Beast has to get Belle to love him.” Except what makes our view of love different in this show comes at the end of act one. After the Beast finds Belle in the forbidden west wing of the castle, he completely loses his temper as he screams at her to leave. Realizing the immediate impact of what his temper and lack of communication have done, he closes our first act by singing “If I Can’t Love Her.” Interesting… that’s not a typo. The name isn’t supposed to be “If She Can’t Love Me.” What the brilliant composer Alan Menken is conveying to us with this song title is about where love comes from. The Beast doesn’t sing about getting her to see past the creature he’s become, but rather allowing himself to love her. In turn, to allow himself to put another first. Much earlier in the story, when Belle volunteers to stay as a prisoner in the castle in order to earn her father’s freedom, this is the first example of true love the Beast witnesses – someone being selfless and putting another first. I think it’s the combination of these two themes in the story that make this such a perfect production for our school and for our program. As these seniors go off into the world to pave their own paths, my hope is that they understand true love is being able to put someone first, and to be selfless.
I’m extremely proud of all of these students in our cast and crew for their hard work, time, efforts, teamwork, and camaraderie during this process. They’ve been incredible to work with and direct. I hope you enjoy this production of Beauty and the Beast, and show that love and appreciation to these incredible students for their amazing work on display.

A very special thank you goes out to Jim Reilly and the SFC Robotics class. They have worked alongside our production over the past couple of months to help develop some of the engineering ideas and concepts you see throughout the show.
Thank you to the talented Kiana Honma for taking and editing our cast and crew head shots. Thank you to the marketing team and Jill Malena for their work on our advertisements and playbill. Thank you Kim Bergstrom, the Blackingtons, Katie Rayners, Ashley Mahaffey, Therese Stambaugh, and every parent who volunteered during tech week and at the shows.
