DEPARTMENT NEWS

Poets Park Playground Renovation & Community Outreach Parks & Recreation is excited to advance planning and community outreach for the Poets Park playground renovation. Staff are currently reviewing three playground concepts and preparing opportunities for residents to share their feedback.

Community members will be able to explore the proposed designs through both in-person outreach and an online feedback option, making it easy to participate and help shape the future playground.

This project is an important investment in a beloved neighborhood park serving the Beach Flats community. Community input on play features, accessibility, safety, and overall design will help guide the final playground selection and future improvements.

DIRECTOR’S LETTER Build Together, Play Together: At the Heart of our Santa Cruz Community Hello and happy Fall, Santa Cruz! The Parks & Recreation team and I are stoked to present the Fall 2026 edition of the Activity Guide, which is packed full of classes, events, and activities for all ages to enjoy this season.

Every day, parks and recreation professionals in Santa Cruz are working to provide quality public spaces and experiences that build a healthy community, foster equity, and better the environment. At the heart of this mission is health and wellness. The National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) defines “health and wellness” as the optimal state of physical, mental and social well-being for individuals and communities. Contrary to historical definitions and perceptions of health, health and wellness encompass more than simply being free of disease.

Wellness is grounded in equitable access to resources and social supports, and involves the dynamic pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of true health. (nrpa.org).

NRPA identifies seven interconnected and interdependent dimensions of well-being: cultural, economic, environmental, intellectual, emotional, physical, and social.

Though policy, planning, and operations, Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation seeks to advance these components of wellbeing every day through our programs, services, public spaces, community centers, and in collaboration with key community parters such as Community Bridges, Santa Cruz City Schools, and many more. What does this look like in practice? This work is demonstrated through our partnership with Friends of Parks and Recreation by providing 250 youth scholarships last season to expand access to programs and classes. It shows up through our age-friendly programs through the Downtown Senior Center at London Nelson, which build community and healthy lifestyles among Santa Cruz’s seniors. It

also can be seen in City parks and community spaces like Upper DeLaveaga Park – home to DeLaveaga Golf Course, Disc Golf Course, and Santa Cruz Shakespeare - which collectively host 400,000 visits per year for play, recreation, and community.

The City’s prioritization of health also is evident through the collective “Health in All Policies” framework and the new Office of Wellbeing. Parks & Recreation is a key contributor to this work, but it is a part of the City’s growing culture to ensure that health and wellness are at the heart of our public service.

Scholarships Available for Fall Programs Applications Due August 14

Friends of Parks & Rec (Formerly FOPAR) offers partial scholarships to help youth from limited-income families in the City of Santa Cruz participate in Parks and Recreation programs.

Applicants must live in the City of Santa Cruz and have a household income below Santa Cruz County’s median ($102,032). Proof of residency is required.

Applications are available at the Parks & Recreation Office, 323 Church Street, Santa Cruz, or online at santacruzca.gov/scholarships. Please submit your application by August 14, 2026.

If your child receives a scholarship, a credit will be applied to your Parks & Recreation account for the approved amount. Parents or guardians are

responsible for registering their child in the selected program(s) — online, in person, or by phone at 831-420-5270. Scholarship credits must be used by December 18, 2026.

All reservable areas have barbecue grills, and most have electricity and some have water. Alcohol permits are available with reservations. The park features ballfields, playground equipment, a pump track, bocce courts, open grassy areas, and hiking trails – something for everyone!

Clubhouse/Scouthouse at Harvey West Park Perfect for indoor/outdoor celebrations, gatherings and meetings, the Clubhouse/Scouthouse accommodates up to 150 guests and features a full industrial range and refrigerator, bar, serving areas, and indoor seating.

Outdoor amenities include barbecue grills, serving tables, picnic tables, and a deck area.

Afterschool Holiday Arts Sewing

Drawn2Art teaches students to draw & sculpt by learning techniques based on the fundamentals. Students learn how to “see” in a new way. Drawn2Art teaches students how to measure with the eye, how to break something into its parts and put it back together again to make a whole picture.

Students are shown that what may look difficult to draw at first glance is really quite simple once you know how to see it piece by piece. A $15.00 material fee is due to the instructor on the first day of class. No class on 10/20 & 10/22.

Learn the art of sewing by experimenting with materials and basic sewing machine skills while creating fun holiday decorations. This class is designed to give students an introduction to sewing, machine safety, basic stitching, and fabric arts. Students will create a handful of fun fabric Christmas holiday projects that challenge their artistic abilities.

In this hands-on clay class, students will design and sculpt their own legendary creatures inspired by myths and folklore from around the world, or straight from their imaginations. Dragons, mermaids, minotaurs, and more will come to life as students explore color mixing, sculpture design, and creative problem solving while learning how to build sturdy 3D creations. Unleash your creativity with tens of thousands of LEGO® pieces at your fingertips! Build engineer-designed projects as you discover the world around us through our inquiry-based learning model. Projects are rotated seasonally to ensure that both new and returning students can explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system.

Flag Football is the perfect introduction to “America’s Game”.

Participants learn skills on both sides of the football including the core components of passing, catching, and defense – all presented in a fun and positive environment. A special information session is available on Thursday, October 1 at 6:30 pm at the London Nelson Community Center.

Harvey West Pool was first opened in 1955 through generous donation of land and funds to support the growing community in Santa Cruz. Over the years, thousands of families were introduced the water and learned to swim safely in a fun environment. The facility features an instructional pool for swimming lessons and children’s aquatics, as well as a L-shaped lap pool with deep water well.

Santa Cruz is the birthplace of surfing in North America, and the original “Surf City.” Historical evidence clearly documents its 1885 arrival and local adoption by 1896. In the summer of 1885 three Hawaiian Princes, David Kawananakoa, Edward Keli’iahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole introduced surfing to the world beyond Hawaii.

They rode Santa Cruz waves and crafted surfboards from our redwood lumber. The impact of their stay rippled from coast to coast and shaped the cultural identity of Santa Cruz County.

NUEVA VISTA COMMUNITY CENTER Our Mission As part of Community Bridges, our mission is to deliver essential services, provide equitable access to resources, and advocate for health and dignity across every stage of life. Class Fees Santa Cruz City residents (R) pay discounted fee and non-residents (NR) pay the higher fee.

Example: $43.00 (R)/$55.00 (NR).

Advance registration is required for all classes.

Age level indicates the age the participant must be on the first day of class.

Refunds and Transfers When a registrant withdraws from a class, the following options are available: Four (4) business days or more prior to the first class meeting: 1. TRANSFER to another Parks & Recreation activity with a $5 transfer fee.

2. WITHDRAW AND REFUND of class fee with a $20 processing fee.

Three (3) business days or less prior to the course start date, no refunds or transfers will be given.

Ten (10) business days after registration, no refunds or adjustments for household account updated to City resident status.

Business days are defined as Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, excluding City holidays.

Cancellations Outdoor class cancellations due to inclement weather may receive either a prorated refund or a makeup session at the discretion of the class instructor and department. Prorated refunds and/or makeup sessions will not be processed until after the last day of the scheduled class.

Classes subject to cancellation due to low enrollment (e.g. not meeting the minimum enrollment set by the instructor) will be refunded to the original payment method.
