Nathaniel Silberschlag’s ‘Times’ at MAW & Beyond

W

hen you Google Nathaniel Silberschlag, one of the early listings is a feature that ran in the New York Times back in 2022, when the horn player was all of 23, but already tenured as the principal horn with the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the country’s most storied. He’d landed the prestigious position at 21 years old, securing a job he’d dreamed about since he was barely past toddler years.

That’s because Silberschlag’s parents come from a long line of musicians, including a grandfather who held the principal viola seat at the New York Philharmonic, and parents who were both members of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. The records he heard as a kid were often the ones recorded by the Cleveland.

But his appointment was no fluke.

Musicians and critics have raved about the horn player for years, noting his ability to achieve a sound that has a clarity and color most never achieve. The Times piece closes with the orchestra’s Music Director Franz Welser-Möst suggesting that Silberschlag has what it takes to be a role model, not just a great artist. “The potential with him is to become a real legend.”

Silberschlag started playing horn at age 4, but he gives a lot of credit for his success to his two years as a fellow at Music Academy in 2017-18 – less than a year before he won the Cleveland audition – when he studied under longtime faculty member Julie Landsman, the former principal horn with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and his mentor (and fan) for more than a decade at Julliard starting in his pre-teen years. (She was also quoted extensively in the 2022 NYT story, including calling the then-12-yearold horn player “brilliant, motivated, personable and talented beyond belief ” and lauding Silberschlag as “the biggest talent I’ve ever seen” to Welser-Möst.

“Those summers really helped me prepare for moments like that article,” he said. “You’re not only trained here as an artist and a musician, but you’re trained to be a total person. It’s such a supportive environment which is crucial to learning how you are going to become your best self. And the masterclasses were huge growing moments for me as a person, having to not only connect to my audience through music, but having to talk, creating a connection in that way which was super new for me.”

There were other ways that being a fellow at MAW was much more than developing his skills and technique, Silberschlag said.

“The faculty really teach you how to believe in yourself and how to trust your abilities. The mental work with Julie, meditation, visualization, really helped me with imposter syndrome, having started the job at Cleveland so young. That story was a mind-boggling moment, but at the same time, I felt well equipped to handle it.”

Also mind-boggling was actually landing the Cleveland job, not just to join a world class ensemble, but because they are a perfect fit for Silberschlag.

“I’d have been happy in any of the top American symphony orchestras,” he said. “But I definitely have an affinity for Cleveland because they play on a very specific type of French horn that I also used growing up. They play in a way that felt most relatable to the way I wanted to.

When I auditioned, I didn’t have to think about changing how I play to fit them.”

His latest pure pleasure in this still-early phase of his career? Taking over the horn studio at MAW from Landman for the last two weeks of the summer festival as a teaching artist peer.

In the final Teaching Artist Showcase on August 6 at the Lobero, he will play Bramwell Tovey’s “Santa Barbara Sonata,” a fun, style-hopping piece for brass quintet commissioned by MAW for Canadian Brass in 2004. He’ll also perform as one of the four “soloists” in Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major, K. 297b,” in the closing Academy Festival Orchestra concert at the Granada two days later.

Beings and Doings Resilience Bound

A

mother and daughter – Sissy Taran and Tiffany Howard – have co-written a book of the sort one reads in a single stunned sitting.

The volume’s title – We are Resilient – is boldly declarative at first glance, but wading into the book (and it is designed as a series of digestible, stupefying short reads), one realizes the title is a crazed understatement. The book will be discussed by Sissy Taran, Andy Gilliland, and (the unstoppable) Grace Fisher on Thursday, August 13, 5:30 pm to 7 pm in the Central Library’s Faulkner Gallery.

The fifteen folks featured in the book are connected by a common thread, each having been dealt bespoke personal misfortune of the kind that hobbles and breaks the under-equipped. The book’s featured interviewees were able to meet the trials sent to immolate them, repurpose that combustible violence as propellant, and – through shear volition and fortifying love – lift themselves into new orbits, new lives. “Inspiring” is a lame and inadequate adjective when applied

to the subjects in We Are Resilient. For these interviewees, “despair” is the puny extra tire you throw in the trunk as you head out to greener pastures of your own difficult sowing.

And yes, a mom and daughter writing team is a charming enterprise in any setting – a published demonstration of matrilineal love, and a gift to the book’s marketers.

On the other hand, We Are Resilient features in its introduction a photo of mom and daughter squaring off with fists raised, smiles touched with a hint of strain. In that photo the book’s editor is standing between Sissy and Tiffany – mom and daughter – with her own strenuous grin. Imagine a referee jumping in to separate the pugilists with a Standing Eight Count and suddenly interrupted by paparazzi. “Smile everybody!”

This is a book about resilience whose authors, by their own acknowledgement, lived the book’s theme in its writing, coming through a mildly turbulent collaboration with a new mutual understanding. Yes, We are Resilient is a meta love letter to bumpy transcendence. The chapter on Hank alone, a Job-like character whose radiant, projectile love only

Grace Fisher sets the tone for We Are Resilient. All the book’s proceeds go to the Grace Fisher Foundation, whose Inclusive Arts Clubhouse (La Cumbre Mall, 120 S Hope Ave.) is a free, welcoming space where artists of every ability can do their thing, connecting through music, dance, and the almost visible energy creative gatherings exude.

Grace is the former high schooler (Go Dons) who, on the occasion of her own birthday party in 2014, was very suddenly and irrevocably attacked by a swiftly moving virus whose rampage,

increases with adversity, will park you in a new space.

“The beauty of it,” says daughter Tiffany, “is that there really was one common thread through all of the interviews. It wasn’t faith, it wasn’t optimism, it wasn’t attitude. I had a lot of nights where I was like, ‘What did heck I do?’ It took this community for my mom and I to get this book done. Our own resilience and community made it happen.”

Montecito Miscellany From Dallas to Divas

“T

he exciting thing about polo is the thunder of the horses’ hooves. You really feel it!” exclaimed Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, his unmistakable southern drawl exulting in the experience of Sunday polo in Santa Barbara. Spending part of the summer here while the Cowboys conduct training camp in Oxnard, the billionaire sports icon has become a temporary Montecito regular. “Polo is exciting to watch, and I should know – I’m in sports!” he laughed before adding. “About the first time they hit the ball, it came over and almost hit us in the head!”

Jones quickly became part of the festivities, throwing out the ceremonial first ball before returning to the terrace to enjoy the game with friends.

“It’s just this beautiful symphony of the horse with the rider, making it all come together,” reflected legendary 1980s supermodel Kim Alexis. “The horse knows how to play. The horse makes the game. That symphony of working together is what fascinates me.”

For Alexis and her husband, Jeff Schwartz, who played polo in the past, the afternoon marked a personal milestone. Ten years ago – almost to the day – they met at a polo match and shared their very first kiss beside the fields.

“Today was symbolic for us because we met ten years ago,” Alexis smiled. “It was August 5th that we met in 2016 and kissed for the first time on the field.”

As she leaned over and kissed her husband beneath the Santa Ynez Mountains, the tears in his eyes said everything.

Their return to polo wasn’t just an anniversary – it was where their story began.

Earlier that day, Alexis enjoyed visiting fellow supermodel Kathy Ireland, who joined Kim for “Inside the ‘80s Supermodel World,” a new episode of UnExpired: When Change Becomes Strength, Kim’s podcast celebrating resilience, reinvention, and life’s next chapters. “We’re very excited about my new podcast!” Kim

said, inviting everyone to give it a listen.

“It was during Fashion Week… actually to kick off Fashion Week,” explained fashion devotee Jan Ray of where she found her dress, whose cream Carolina Herrera gown with oversized black polka dots turned heads. Jan discovered the striking dress during a special Carolina Herrera reception celebrating the new boutique’s opening in Palm Desert.

Fresh from the desert with friends Natalie Axl and Michelle Nichols, Jan brought a touch of Carolina’s couture to an afternoon with fashionable friends Dr. Richard and Annette Caleel, who looked just as dazzling.

While style captivated the spectators, the action on the field was equally memorable as La Karina celebrated its win, with Jerry Jones joining onstage for the presentation. Football royalty, supermodels, high goal polo, and Carolina Herrera couture blended effortlessly into one quintessential Montecito afternoon.

As fans continued chanting “Jerry!

Jerry!” and lined up with polo balls for his autograph, Jerry summed up his fun afternoon with a southern grin.

“Well, it’s unpredictable and a whole lot of fun. That’s what makes this so exciting. There’s a story here, and we’re following the story.”

On this particular Sunday, that story just happened to stretch from Dallas to Montecito – with a little magic in between.

Pedestrian Seriously Injured in CVR Collision Organic Soup Kitchen Debuts New Mag

A

pedestrian suffered serious injuries Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on the 1200 block of Coast Village Road. According to the Santa Barbara Police Department, the collision occurred at approximately 9:50 pm on August 2, prompting a response from police, firefighters, and paramedics, who found the adult male pedestrian unconscious in the roadway before transporting him to Cottage Hospital for emergency treatment.

Preliminary investigators say the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Coast Village Road when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing southbound. The department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is handling the investigation. Police said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, and DUI is not believed to be a factor. Coast Village Road was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Bucket Brigade Academy Trains Fire Prevention Leaders The Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade is investing in the next generation of disaster preparedness through its inaugural Youth Fire Prevention Team, part of the nonprofit’s Bucket Brigade Academy. This summer, student leaders gathered at Elings Park before deploying to neighborhoods on Santa Barbara’s Mesa, where they removed invasive vegetation, created defensible space around homes, and learned practical wildfire mitigation techniques. The training comes as the organization prepares for an anticipated Super El Niño, which could increase the region’s risk of wildfire, flooding, and debris flows.

Beyond fieldwork, participants completed FEMA’s ICS-100 Incident Command System course and received hands-on leadership training designed to prepare them to organize volunteers during emergencies. Over four weeks, academy cadets work toward certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED, Wilderness First Aid, and Wilderness First Responder while developing communication and crisis management skills.

By combining practical fire prevention with youth leadership development, the Bucket Brigade Academy is helping empower local students to become an active part of Santa Barbara’s resilience before disaster strikes.

E-Bikes Cited by SBC Sheriffs Taking the much-discussed e-bikes situation in hand, the SBC Sheriff ’s office set up a six-hour unannounced safety check point on July 23 in Carpinteria. Six citations were issued as follows: five juveniles for riding their bikes without a helmet and one adult for running a red light. First time offenders under age 18 can complete a safety course instead of paying a fine. Carpinteria rules for e-bikes include the obvious: wear a helmet, do not ride the bike on a sidewalk and obey all traffic laws, as e-bikes are considered a vehicle just like cars and trucks. ontecito Fire Department (MFD) Chief Brian Fallon announced recently there are “expected openings” to work for Montecito Fire Protection District. The positions are for an entry-level Firefighter/EMT and for a Firefighter/Paramedic.

While recruitment will start in November 2026, this is a pre-recruitment announcement for interested applicants to get in shape and line up their skill set with the required qualifications as listed by MFD on their human resources website.

In sum, “Firefighters respond to structure and vegetation fires, emergency medical calls, rescues, and other emergencies to protect life, property, and the environment. Typical duties include fire suppression, emergency medical care (Basic Life Support for EMTs, Advanced Life Support for paramedics), rescue operations, equipment and apparatus operation and maintenance, training and drills, fire prevention and public education, and other duties as assigned. Firefighters work a 48/96 shift schedule and must be able to perform effectively in high-stress, physically demanding environments.”

Expected Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; California State Firefighter I Certificate or completion of a California State Fire Marshalaccredited Firefighter I academy (or eligible for reciprocity); Current CPR/AED healthcare provider certification; Valid California driver’s license, and must meet all legal, background, medical, and psychological standards for employment.

For Firefighter/EMT: California EMT certification (or NREMT with CA reciprocity).

Bringing the Beat to Girls Inc. Carp

ellooooo My Loves! This week brings much fab philanthropy news from Montecito!

Our town’s gorgeously talented high school teens, Lila and Georgia MacPhail, announced their donation of a fully equipped Music Room to the lucky girls who are members at Girls Inc. Carpinteria! Giving back and paying it forward, they jumped at the chance to help provide yet another slice of the membership package to the organization.

Said to be prompted by their love of music, the MacPhails have now left part of their ongoing legacy at Girls Inc. Carp.

The teens are the successful daughters of Bryan and Allie MacPhail, along with their siblings Hadley and Graham.

The MacPhails moved to Montecito in 2018, and their children have attended El Montecito Preschool, Cold Spring School, and now Lila attends Cate School in Carpinteria. A great in-depth interview with them was reported in the Montecito Journal here:

I contacted Girls Inc. via phone on Friday for the behind the scenes on how it all came together. The lovely young girl receptionist informed that, “Cate School reached out to Girls, Inc. to ask if Cate’s music students can give music classes during the summer for Girls Inc. In their reply to Cate School, Girls Inc. explained that they would love that, but that Girls Inc. did not have any musical instruments or gear to provide for the courses. And then that is when it came together! Georgia and Lila purchased the instruments and gear on Girls Inc.’s behalf, and the music room officially opened in the first week of June. At this time, it is a work in progress to set up volunteers to teach music during the summer. When the school year starts, some of the Girls Inc. members may bring their instruments from school as well, so the program may continue through the school year.”

In the MacPhails’ press release, Georgia, speaking for Lila and herself, share, “I think that this room is a place where the girls of Girls Inc. Carpinteria can share their passion and be creative and play with each other. You can

family for this generous gift and can’t wait to witness the girls develop their talents. At Girls Inc., we are all about encouraging the girls to try new hobbies in a supportive, all-girls environment.

Some of the girls have been exposed to music at home or in school, but for the majority, this will be their first time gaining hands-on experience with an instrument. We are so excited to develop a music program that invites girls to find their voice, express their creativity, and learn to create together.”

The new space contains an array of musical equipment including guitars,

do anything… try everything, don’t be afraid to express yourself… This is such a safe place to do that, and so I hope this room brings that out of them. I hope that they know that they don’t have to be afraid to share what they love and do something they love, because that’s what inspires art. I think that that’s really magical, especially in a place like this, and so I hope it inspires that. We’ve been singing together our whole lives, and so this is something that really represented a piece of us, something that we wanted to be able to give back.”

On Entertainment Lights Up! Leans In

ights Up! Theatre Company is expanding its lighting grid and illuminating two new projects, all under the umbrella of what is known as one of Santa Barbara’s teen theater conservatories. It all comes together in this month’s SummerFest at Center Stage Theatre, the company’s home since its founding in 2018, with three different events in the span of four days, August 12-16. First up is Dearest, (comma included), written by six-year Lights Up! alum Noah Dehli and devised and performed

by Dehli with fellow LU alum Ada Green and Andrew Alvarez-Cooper.

“This show is about obligation, pigs, a lesbian, a bisexual, and an astronomically wealthy family (that is also astronomically dysfunctional),” Delhi writes on his website. “As the play churns, we learn about [a couple’s] tenuous engagement, unpack their relationship to privilege and suffering, and delight in some 1850s Victorian flavor. Last August, the three of us spent four hours on a couch together improvising and devising a prototypical, primordial soup version… lucking into some pretty special themes and scenes… in the world of Victoria-era England melded with our modern sensibilities. Something magical appeared.”

Dearest, isn’t just Dehli’s debut, it’s a new direction for Lights Up! (LU) because it also represents the company’s first production not performed by teens. The second such production takes place two days later when Lights Up! Founder/Artistic Director Amy Love directs a two-day run of another three-character work in Skylight, David Hare’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning 1995 masterwork. Hare’s intimate, emotionally charged, and humor-infused exploration of love, class grief, and more is the first offering from Ghostlight Theatre, Amy Love and LU’s new adult theater company.

“I’ve wanted to have an adult version of Lights Up! that would incorporate community actors of any age as well as our recently graduated alums so that when they come back, they have a place to do some theater with us – and with me – again,” Love explained. “It’s always been my intent, and I finally pulled the trigger to make it happen.”

Dearest, playwright Dehli also plays one of the roles in Skylight, which stars Felicia Hall, last seen locally in SBCC’s Unnecessary Farce this past spring, and Paul Canter, who starred earlier in SBCC’s spring offering A Small Family Business.

“The play is an acting tour de force for the three actors,” Love said. “It’s a beautiful play about people really looking back over their choices, a great work for the debut.”

Lights Up! SummerFest winds up with the third annual Summer Lights Cabaret, an evening of live performances by an ensemble that includes current company members and alumni. Songs, improv, and even “The Philadelphia,” one of the short comedic one-acts by David Ives featured in his famous collection All in the Timing, comprise another nod to Ghostlight which Love will direct as well.

“The evening is very much a hometown reunion,” Love said. “Our alumni get to come back and reconnect with their community and some of the current company members they’re still friends with. It’s so fun and lively, and the singers choose what to sing, whether a favorite out of our lexicon or a new selection. We also do improv because it’s a big part of our directing process. It’s such a convivial night and a very connecting event.”

After the weekend, Love launches right into LU season No. 9, as auditions for the next teen production, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, begin August 17.

his month’s “Way It Was” takes us back to the 3rd century AD when Diocletian Augustus was the Eastern Roman emperor and Maximianus was his co-emperor. They forced people to participate in the Imperial Cult, which considered members of the ruling family to be among the pantheon of the divine who must be obeyed and worshiped. Not participating in the Cult was an act of treason, punishable by death.

In AD 303 Diocletian, who had a history of subjugating Christians, went on a rampage of terror against them. He ordered their homes destroyed and their sacred books burned. Christians were arrested, tortured, mutilated, burned and starved, and some were condemned to gladiatorial contests to amuse the Byzantine citizens.

Worn out by his strenuous divine duties, Diocletian abdicated and built himself a retirement home in AD 305. The Great Persecution ended in AD 311 with the Edict of Toleration, ironically put out by Galerius, who had been a fierce supporter of the persecution, but the tide had changed. Constantine, who by this time was emperor of the Western empire (and later the whole empire) was himself a professed Christian, but didn’t officially convert until in AD 337, the year he died.

Barbara’s father was Dioscorus, a rich merchant who held an important position in the Roman government. His daughter Barbara was beautiful beyond compare, but that headstrong girl just wouldn’t stop feeding and helping the poor, something the authorities frowned upon. Not only that, but her beauty drew a host of undesirable suitors.

Since Dioscorus was often away, he imprisoned her in a tower and saw to her education by hiring tutors. One of her tutors was Origen of Alexandria, whose teachings convinced Barbara to accept Christianity. (Another version is “a take” on the Rapunzel fairytale in which Barbara lets down her long unlikely-blond locks to which fellow Christians attached the writings of Origen.) During this time, Barbara was born near Byzantium, now Istanbul (not Constantinople). Most sources say she was probably born in Nicomedia, a town on the eastern side of the Bosphorus.

The Greek Orthodox church says she was born in Heliopolis in Egypt or Lebanon. The places of her birth seem to be many and varied. The details of her life’s story also differ tremendously, some “Patience is the companion of wisdom.” – Saint Augustine

A Family Scrapbook Celebrating Saint Barbara’s 100-Year Legacy

his year we celebrate the centennial of our local patroness having first been ceremonially depicted at Fiesta by a local Native Daughter.

Saint Barbara has appeared during Old Spanish Days at a variety of community pageants and festivities dating back to 1926. Let us recall how this iconic portrayal came about.

Historically chosen by the Reina Del Mar Parlor of Native Daughters of the Golden West, an often young, unmarried woman was selected to portray Santa Barbara’s patron saint and participate in colorful Fiesta receptions, parades, and pageants. Locals and visitors alike have delighted in seeing her in full dress, wearing a velvet robe and golden crown, with chalice and palm frond in hand, standing regally and gazing over the crowds.

Local families, including those whose relatives portrayed Saint Barbara in those early years, still have cherished photographs, dresses, program notes, and souvenirs tucked away in desks, beneath beds, or preserved in scrapbooks such as ours, tracing their loved ones’ participation in those earlier Fiesta days.

Saint Barbara’s first appearance traditionally takes place at the Native Daughters’ Pre-Fiesta Tea, held in advance of the official start of Fiesta Week, most recently at Casa de Guerra downtown. She then appears at the opening night celebration on the Old Mission steps, spotlights ablaze, as the assembled crowds bask in her portrayal of the historic 11th-century saint who was imprisoned in her father’s tower because of her religious conversion until her untimely death at his hand.

Saint Barbara, along with all those who have portrayed her over the last

century as the annual representative of our fair city, is featured this year in a finely curated exhibition now on display at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Mary Louise Days, parlor historian and herself Saint Barbara in

1965, has lent her own historic memorabilia and images to the exhibition and notes that the display offers a rich look at the history of this beloved Old Spanish Days icon and the women who

have brought her to life.

his is a marine organism magnified 100 times. The blackand-white scanning electron microscope view reveals the calcium carbonate skeleton of Cradoscrupocellaria tenuirostris.

It’s a bryozoan – one of a staggeringly diverse group with about 30,000 species worldwide. We shared a different one back in March. All bryozoans are made up of a series of compartmented individual animals called zooids (ZO-ids). Some of the variety you see among compartments is the result of different zooids specializing in feeding, reproduction, defense, and so on.

This specimen was collected from algae off Isla Tiburon (the largest island in the Gulf of California) in March 1985 by Howard/Berry Chair of Malacology Henry W. Chaney, PhD. Forty years later, Dr. Chaney produced the image above, during a major push by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History to make collection data for its thousands of bryozoans digitally available to researchers around the world.

Doctors Without Walls – Santa Barbara Street Medicine

ther than maybe Guaranteed Income pilot program initiatives that provide recurring, unconditional cash payments directly to low-income individuals and families with no strings attached, you can’t get much more direct in terms of offering support to those in need than Doctors Without Walls – Santa Barbara Street Medicine (DWWSBSM). Just as its name says, the nonprofit provides free medical care for the most vulnerable of Santa Barbara County, almost exclusively the homeless population, when and where those services are needed.

Doctors Without Walls – the name was coined as a tweak to the international medical nonprofit Doctors Without Borders – to amplify the concept that unlike traditional healthcare, Doctors Without Walls doesn’t make its clientele come to them, as entering a building can prove an insurmountable obstacle to many unhoused people. Doctors Without Walls means health care wherever unhoused people might be found, including (among other locations) in encampments, in alleys and alcoves, under bridges, on beaches, and in public parks and parking lots, “It’s a big part of our system,” said Blake Sanchez, DWW-SBSM’s communications

coordinator. “We have more than 10 clinics per week where we go out in our mobile van, take our equipment, and then set up stops at parks, which are stationary and regular, so people know where to find us. But the street medicine part is that we also do more mobile rounds where we actually walk with our backpacks, carrying the medicine and equipment, trying to find people.”

Who they end up serving, and the services needed, can vary widely, Sanchez said.

“It might just be an infected wound that we triage and put a new dressing on. Or it can be uncontrolled diseases like diabetes, which is a big one, or untreated mental illness. People might have been diagnosed but have run out of medication and end up going months or years without having it. We carry the common ones with us so we can help them right away and give them a pack that can last a little while.”

What happens after that, Sanchez said, is where the companion care team comes in.

“We know we probably aren’t going to solve your problems in one visit. We understand that it takes a while, and you need somebody on your team to vouch for you, help you get to your primary care appointments, go to that pharmacy you’ve been needing to go to. The team helps the patient overcome the obstacles

Wilford Lloyd “Bud” Baumes: November 24, 1939 – June 28, 2026

W

ilford Lloyd “Bud” Baumes passed away peacefully on the morning of June 28, 2026, at the age of 86. A lifelong creative spirit, Bud lived an extraordinary life defined by imagination, generosity, elegance, and an enduring appreciation for beauty in all its forms.

Born and raised in Amberley Village, Ohio, Bud was the son of the late Dr. Ogden Hayward “Bud” Baumes and Dorothy Hudson Baumes. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John Ross Baumes and Dr. H. “Hudson” (Myra) Baumes.

He is lovingly remembered by his nephew, Lloyd “Ross” Baumes; his niece, Lee Ann Baumes; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Hannah Baumes, Leo Baumes, Jack Baumes, Morgan (Taylor) Wilson, and Blake Petzelt; and his great-great-nephew and niece, Crew and Romy Wilson.

After serving his country in the United States Navy, Bud completed his education at Denison University and later earned a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, laying the foundation for a lifetime of creativity and innovation.

Bud built a fascinating career in the entertainment industry as a screenwriter, producer, and creative developer. Among his many accomplishments, perhaps his most iconic were his roles as developer of the television series The Love Boat and producer of the original Wonder Woman television series, leaving a lasting mark on two of television’s most beloved classics.

After moving from Los Angeles to Montecito in the mid-1980s, Bud continued his passion for architecture and design by acquiring and restoring exceptional residential properties. His crowning achievement was the meticulous restoration and renovation of a historic Riven Rock estate, transforming it into one of Montecito’s most admired homes. His residences were featured in Santa Barbara Magazine and Architectural Digest, reflecting his extraordinary eye for design and timeless style.

Bud was an enthusiastic board member of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art for many years, serving on its Development Committee and playing a pivotal role in the Museum’s Photo Futures initiative. Through this work, he traveled the world to help acquire significant photographic works for the Museum’s permanent collection.

His generosity extended throughout the Santa Barbara community. A passionate supporter of the arts and music, Bud was a devoted benefactor of the Santa Barbara Symphony, the Music Academy of the West, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, and numerous other cultural organizations.

Whether designing remarkable homes, supporting the arts, or opening his home to friends, Bud’s creativity was always matched by his warmth and generosity. His impeccable style, thoughtful nature, quick wit, and legendary cocktail parties created lasting memories for all who knew him. Over the decades he spent in California, he built a wide circle of cherished friendships before eventually returning to his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

More than his many accomplishments, Bud will be remembered for the way he made people feel – welcome, inspired, and appreciated. His creativity, generosity, wit, and love of gathering family and friends created memories that will be treasured for generations. His life was beautifully lived, and his legacy will endure in the countless lives he touched.

A private family gathering will be held at the family’s cherished home on Burt Lake in Northern Michigan. Private inurnment will take place at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Evendale, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bud’s honor are suggested to the

Alzheimer’s Association.

Meet Pediatrician Marilyn Mendoza, MD, MPH

W

hat drives someone to spend a life in medicine? In this Q&A series, a group of leading local physicians share the moments that set them on their path, the breakthroughs shaping their fields, and the realities behind the work. Their answers are candid, occasionally surprising, and grounded in experience. Together, they offer a clear-eyed look at the people delivering care in our community and what continues to motivate them every day.

Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and how did you select your particular specialty?

A. From as early as I can remember, I wanted to become a pediatrician. At four years old, I was deeply inspired by my own Sansum Pediatrician, Dr. Ernest Kolendrianos. I admired the way he spoke directly to me with warmth and patience, and how his gentle approach made each visit feel safe and even enjoyable. Even at that young age, I sensed the profound impact a physician could have on a child’s experience of healthcare.

My connection to medicine deepened as I grew older. Because of family health challenges, I spent significant time navigating the healthcare system, and by the age of eight I was translating between English and Spanish for family members during medical appointments. Acting as a bridge in those moments gave me early insight into the vulnerability families experience in clinical settings and the importance of clear, compassionate communication. Those experiences strengthened my interest in science and medicine while shaping my understanding of advocacy, trust, and patient-centered care.

Caring for children has always come naturally to me, so pediatrics felt like a natural path. In medical school, that calling was reaffirmed as I witnessed the unique and enduring relationships built between pediatricians and families. I was struck by the resilience of children and the optimism that often fills pediatric visits, even during challenging circumstances. The opportunity to support children’s growth, empower families, and foster long-term trust continues to inspire my commitment to this field.

She was both strong and gentle – loving yet grounding, adventurous yet cautious.

Although she did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education herself, she was unwavering in her commitment to ensuring that my brother and I did. From her, I learned resilience, humility, and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

In medicine, I have also been fortunate to learn from mentors such as Sutter’s Dr. Saida Hamdani and Dr. Andria Ruth, who was a longtime local pediatrician, who exemplify integrity, intelligence, and deep compassion.

Through their example, I have seen that strong moral character and empathy are just as essential as clinical knowledge. Together, these role models have shaped both the physician and the person I strive to be.

What is something you’re currently learning outside of medicine?

Outside of medicine, I am currently exploring cooking through my first cookbook club. Experimenting beyond simple recipes has been a new and creative challenge, allowing me to learn new techniques and flavors. Just as meaningful, the club has provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with other inspiring women, making it both an educational and social experience.

If you could have dinner with any historical or living figure, who would it be and why?

If I could have dinner with any historical figure, it would be Martin Luther King Jr. I deeply admire his courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice and equality. I would want to learn how he sustained hope and purpose in the face

of adversity while working to create lasting and meaningful change.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my husband and our three children, ages three, four, and six. Balancing a career with three young children certainly has its challenges, but being a mother has been my greatest accomplishment. Whether we are at home, attending sports activities, or traveling together, I especially love watching the joy my children experience as they learn new skills. Seeing the world through their eyes brings constant perspective and reminds me to appreciate life’s simplest moments.

Who has been a mentor or role model in your life, and what did you learn from them?

While I have been fortunate to learn from many mentors, the greatest role model in my life has been my mother. Although she is no longer with us, her influence continues to guide me every day. She immigrated from Mexico at 17 with limited resources, learned English, enrolled herself in school, and worked tirelessly alongside my father to build a stable life for our family. Despite significant obstacles, she carried herself with strength, optimism, and grace.

oast Village Road traded its everyday stroll for a full-on Fiesta as more than 250 Santa Barbara and Montecito residents gathered to kick off the 2026 Old Spanish Days season. Music spilled into the street, dancers twirled in brilliant color, and the village transformed into a lively celebration of Santa Barbara’s history and heritage.

A highlight of the evening was the blend of young folklórico dancers and experienced performers sharing the stage, underscoring how Fiesta traditions are being carried forward with energy and pride.

Presidente David Bolton, ’26 El Primer Vice Presidente Tony Miller, Kim Gutierrez, and ‘26 Fiesta Marshal John Palminteri, joined by the volunteers and families whose countless hours keep Old Spanish Days thriving. Local artist Pedro De La Cruz signed this year’s official Fiesta poster at Sunstone Wine Lounge while guests enjoyed mariachi music, poetry, period fashions, and plenty of community spirit.

CalPrivate Bank Montecito sponsored the celebration, with George Leis and his wife joining Mayor Randy Rowse, Coast Village Association ED Beth Sullivan, Father Larry Gosselin, Dana Newquist, Trish Davis, Andrea Hein, Andrea Eltinge, Terry and Sam Maphis IV, Rick Oshay, Teresa Kuskey, local merchants, and residents in welcoming Fiesta back to the village.

Held in recognition of the United Nations’ World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the sold-out fundraiser raised funds to support SAFE SBC’s efforts to prevent human trafficking, educate the community, strengthen partnerships, and help survivors rebuild their lives.

The Twinings’ picturesque estate became a colorful fiesta of Mexican-inspired hospitality, where guests embraced the evening’s Western-meets-Fiesta dress code with gusto.

Traditional mariachi music filled the warm summer air while guests noshed festive Mexican cuisine, enjoyed wine tastings and handcrafted cocktails, watched custom cigar rolling and bandana embroidery, admired mesmerizing fire dancers, and enthusiastically cheered a spirited costume contest.

Alastair Winn, Amanda’s father, won the contest with his traditional Mariachi outfit.

Performances by Emilio Gonzales, 2026 Spirit Runner-Up, and Penny Hernandez, 2026 Junior Spirit of Fiesta, added even more sparkle to the celebration.

History Dances “It’s my honor to toast Fiesta’s extraordinary history,” said Dacia Harwood, executive director of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. She reminded guests that Fiesta “was born out of a conversation about preservation, and also cultural and economic vitality – both still important today.” Those ideals came vividly to life during La Fiesta del Museo, where history stepped off the museum walls and onto the dance floor.

Museum President and Event Chair Sharon Bradford welcomed nearly 300 supporters to the museum’s enchanting adobe courtyard, joined by the Fiesta Flower Girls, as guests celebrated the opening of Project Fiesta! Arte de los Mantónes and Finding Saint Barbara. The new exhibitions honor the traditions that have shaped Old Spanish Days for generations, while highlighting the stories behind the museum’s remarkable collection of Spanish shawls and Santa Barbara’s patron saint.

Among those helping preserve that history were Brett and Natalie Hodges, whose instrumental support in acquiring the historic News-Press archive made it possible to include many of those treasured photographs in the exhibition.

Trustees George Leis, Sheila Snow, Vince Caballero, Vito Gioiello, Rhonda Henderson, Pat Caird, and immediate past President Hilary Burkemper joined fellow supporters for an evening of handmade tacos, specialty margaritas, tequila tastings, and an elegant Spanish dinner before a captivating fashion show by dancers from the Linda Vega Dance Studio, who modeled the museum’s historic embroidered silk mantones.

As twilight settled over the courtyard, acclaimed flamenco artist Timo Nuñez, joined by guest dancers Ashley Almada and Corrie Jimenez, delivered a fiery

“They were two of the most formative summers of my life, and the second one was when I knew what I wanted to learn, how I wanted to progress,” he said. “So I also feel like I have a unique knowledge of how to maximize fellows’ experiences, almost like a secret weapon.”

Unlike most other MAW faculty, who leave town when their residency is over, Landsman now lives in Santa Barbara, and Silberschlag was still buzzing about spending the previous day with his mentor and friend in town.

“I’m thrilled that we had a whole great day together, just kind of chilling and me playing horns,” he said. “It was funny, but I had to tell her, ‘I’m really nervous playing for you again’ after something like seven years. It was almost like I was back being a fellow, or in her studio at Juilliard.”

Silberschlag shared that he will be buying two of Landsman’s rare horns as she continues to slow down her playing.

Following in her footsteps as a longtime faculty member at Music Academy is potentially on the horizon, arguably delaying Landsman’s retirement indefinitely, her ethos embodied within, and borne forward by, her grateful former student.

“That is exactly the goal and hope,” Silberschlag said. “I want to do justice to everything that she’s given me, to spread her legacy to others in the hope that it can be as big a part of them as it has been for me.”

Friday, August 7: The Marilyn Horne Song Competition is, at least for this year, the only one of three such contests between fellows to still be part of the season, with the winners claiming high honors, cash, and a chance to perform back at Hahn Hall within the following 10 months. The song singoff is the grand lady of them all, one in which there are no preliminaries, so every vocalist and every vocal pianist get the chance to perform three selections in front of the impressive panel of judges, competing for the coveted title and a cash prize. they’ve been facing whether it’s medication or applying for a program or even just having bus tokens so that they can go to the pharmacy on a monthly basis to get what they need themselves.”

Establishing the connection is paramount, as the homeless population can be notoriously wary of engaging with someone they don’t know or answering questions or even accepting help beyond money.

“It’s pretty cool that we have a group of people that they trust,” Sanchez said. “They see us now on the streets and they see us as someone that’s not going to judge them, but rather someone that wants to help them when they do feel ready.”

That welcoming is often not immediate, he said.

“It usually takes us three times seeing someone before they finally say yes to letting us help them with Medi-Cal enrollment or to get connected back with their primary care physician. Other times it’s even a lot longer. It can be six months to years before out of nowhere they say, ‘Hey, I finally want to get that help that you’ve been trying to offer me.’ But it’s really cool when that happens.”

DWW-SBSM has been adding services over the years, including a mobile dental clinic that can handle everything from check-ups to emergency fillings. Women’s service extends to a fully female staffed Women’s Free Health Clinic at Transition House as well as a planned gynecological clinic set to begin this fall.

All in all, DWW-SBSM has been takin’ it to the streets – and beyond – since 2005, with the organization becoming the first independent street medicine team in the country to achieve 501(c)(3) status just three years later.

Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp For four days in July, the UCSB Recreation Center became a place where confidence grew alongside athletic skills as Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital hosted its annual Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp. The free program welcomed approximately 35 campers ages 6 to 21 and was supported by 75 volunteers, many of whom are wheelchair users themselves, creating a powerful environment of mentorship and encouragement.

Campers explored an impressive lineup of adaptive sports, including wheelchair basketball, rugby, hand cycling, SCUBA diving, swimming, tennis, pickleball, indoor rock climbing, and sled hockey. New this year were lassoing lessons, a carnival-style festival, a pop-up dance party, and a Family & Friends Day talent show that celebrated creativity alongside athletic achievement.

Open Studios Tour Celebrates 25 Years The Santa Barbara Studio Artists will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its beloved Open Studios Tour with a special opening reception and retrospective on Friday, September 4, at the Community Arts Workshop. The evening will showcase artwork, photographs, and memorabilia spanning the event’s quarter-century history while honoring the founding members, volunteers, and artists who have helped make the tour a local tradition since 2001.

The self-guided Open Studios Tour follows September 5-7, inviting the public inside working artists’ studios across Santa Barbara, Montecito, Goleta, and Hope Ranch. The organization relies on roughly 80 percent private donations and largely unrestricted grants, minimizing administrative costs so that most funding supports direct services, and partially insulating DWW-SBSM from the drastic governmental funding cutbacks since 2025 that are expected to increase in the coming months. Though demand for its services is likely to skyrocket as reductions in Medi-Cal and the like set in.

The organization also has a relatively rare structure where not only is it a fully volunteer outfit, but professional healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses and EMTs, work alongside med students and even a large contingent of pre-health students from Westmont, UCSB, and SBCC. “It’s not only what lets us put on so many clinics and mobile visits, it also provides education and training for students even before they get to medical school,” Sanchez said.

Through its collective efforts, Doctors Without Walls both improves access to essential healthcare for people experiencing homelessness and marginalization, and trains future health professionals in empathy, listening, and community-centered practice.

“You learn how to have more empathy, and you learn that you need to listen more as a healthcare provider rather than just telling someone what to do,” said Sanchez, who is currently enrolled in dental school himself. “It’s a beautiful thing that we get to mentor these prehealth students and it sets them off on a really good footing for what they’re going to accomplish in their careers, hopefully being the best healthcare provider they can be for their own commu nities once they move away.”

SBMNH and Sea Center News The Sea Center recently welcomed a pair of endangered “Sunflower Stars” to its Dive In exhibit. The fish are 18-armed, tube-footed and pale purple urchin eaters formally known as Pycnopodia Helianthoides, a species that has been absent from California oceans since mid-2010 due to a wasting disease. Their role in nature is to keep kelp forest ecosystems healthy.

window cut into her tower to let in the light of the Holy Trinity.

So, back to the story. When Barbara’s father returns one day from a long journey, he asks her why she has cut a third window into the tower. Barbara announces her conversion to Christianity and her belief in the Holy Trinity. Her father is infuriated and aghast. She has imperiled the entire family. He insists she recant. She refuses.

He takes her before the magistrates who threaten and then torture her. And then the miracles begin. They approach her with burning torches and before they reach her, they are snuffed out. They beat her and the next day all her wounds are healed.

Eventually, they strip her and cut off her breasts. Still, she won’t recant.

Finally, they tell her father to behead her. He agrees. The beheading does the trick and Barbara dies. On his way home, a tremendous storm arises with ferocious lightning and thunder. Her father gets his just desserts and is struck by lightning and killed.

It is said that Barbara’s remains were preserved in Constantinople, the new name for Byzantium. In the 1100s, her relics were brought to Kyiv in today’s Ukraine, and in 2012 the Ukrainian Orthodox Church transferred a small part of St. Barbara’s relics to St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Illinois. Another source, however, says her remains were sent to Venice and later to the island of Burano. Still others have her remains in Egypt. So, the question becomes, where in the world is Barbara?

Barbara serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of faith and determination. Her unwavering courage in the face of relentless adversity and her resolute Christian faith are considered a model for confronting life’s harshest challenges with hope and an indomitable spirit. Barbara, like other Christian martyrs, remained true to her convictions despite the cost.

Barbara is also one of the 14 saints who are designated as Holy Helpers by the Roman Catholic Church. These are saints that can intercede with God to assist people. With the spread of Christianity, Barbara came to be revered the world over. Saint Barbara is invoked to prevent lightning and fire and sudden death. She is therefore the patron saint of anyone working with fire, which includes artillery and explosives. In some countries, miners put a statue of her at the entrance to the shafts. Sailors refer to the powder magazine on a ship as the saintbarbara.

She is also considered the patron saint of mathematicians (go figure!) and architects (I guess one can build a case for that).

1786, a mission for Santa Barbara was established and the pueblo that grew up around it became known as Santa Barbara as well.

Consequently, images of the blessed saint proliferated in her namesake town.

The late Erin Graffy de Garcia, in her book chronicling the presence of the saint in town, lists at least 30 places where her image can be seen. Images of St. Barbara, however, can be found throughout the world.

Sixty years after Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo came sailing along the yet-to-be-named Santa Barbara Channel and managed to die after a fall on one of the Channel Islands, Sebastián Vizcaino cruised by.

On December 3, 1602, a terrific storm blew up, with lightning and thunder and surging seas. The crew battled the storm all night and prayed for deliverance. By morning the seas were calm and still as the sun rose over the tranquil waters. It was the feast day of Santa Barbara and Vizcaino named the channel in honor of her aid in their survival of the storm.

The Portola Expedition of exploration and settlement reached Santa Barbara in 1769 and by 1782, a presidio was built and named after the Channel. In

recognizable is the three-windowed tower.

The others are a palm branch, a symbol of her martyrdom; lightning bolts; the chalice with the host for communion (she is the only female saint to be portrayed with it); the sword with which she was killed; and, like many saints, a book that represents the teachings of Christ.

Sainte-Barbe in Bretagne In Europe, Saint Barbara appears in thousands of locations. In Brittany, there

is a lovely, mystical chapel dedicated to her in Le Faouët. The story goes that in the 15th century, Lord Jean de Toulbodou of Locmalo was out hunting along the river Ellè when a violent thunderstorm broke out. He was terrified that he would be struck by lightning or crushed by the boulders raining down on him from the escarpment above. He called upon St. Barbara to save him and promised to build a chapel to her if he survived. In 1489, he did so.

La Chapelle de Sainte-Barbe sits on a ledge of the cliff that had rained boulders down on Lord Toulbodou. Beautiful stained-glass windows tell his story and reveal the many situations for which the faithful call upon St. Barbara. In the chapel hang ancient model ships, for she is the patron saint of mariners, and Brittany considers itself a maritime nation. Attached to one corner of the chapel is a stone tower,

The very first personification of St. Barbara, however, was Delfina de la Guerra, who performed a tableau vivant of Palma Vecchio’s 1525 painting for the 1890 Trade Fair in Santa Barbara.

In 1926, the Reina del Mar Chapter of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, selected Kate Ord Nelson, a descendent of early California settlers to be the first Saint Barbara. The Museum’s exhibit includes a gallery of photographic images of these saintly masqueraders as well as icons, statues, Renaissance paintings, artwork, and ephemera relat ed to Saint Barbara.

Goddess Gatherings Galore

acifica Graduate Institute’s Goddess-Makers 2026 event is a long weekend slated for August 28-30 at Pacifica’s stunning center on Ladera Lane. With a theme of “Oracles of the Creative in an Age of Collapse,” the arts-based research conference confronts the current crisis-sparked sense that something foundational is giving way from a depth psychological perspective, positing that collapse is not simply catastrophe but a threshold, the dissolution of symbolic structures that no longer carry psychic life. The suggestion is that what appears as breakdown may in fact be initiation, which, in myth, unveils moments wherein the oracle appears. Collapse becomes the passage through which persona gives way to authentic authority.

With AI accelerating change at unprecedented speed, political polarization at preposterous levels, and challenges to identity and persona giving rise to existential anxiety and more, that threshold is palpable. The depth psychology perspective sees these symptoms as signals of archetypal activation, pointing toward renewal.

The conference has a number of impressive faculty and alumni on its roster of keynote speakers, performers and workshop leaders, including Montecito’s own writer-producer-director legend Cheri Steinkellner. The four-time Emmy Award winner (Cheers) and Tony nominee (Sister Act the Musical) will lead a session called “Raise Your Voice: Losing, Listening, and Reclaiming Voice in a Time of Collapse.” Other activities include walking the land, opening blessings, concerts, comedy, visual art presentations, and more. August 8’s signature benefit concert Play it Forward this time around is called “Backwards Broadway,” meaning the performers will be taking beloved Broadway classics from such shows at Annie, Wicked, Rent, and Waitress and flipping them on their head, reimagining the musical theater standards in unconventional, unexpected and often hilarious ways.

The three stars of the show – David Burnham (original casts of Wicked, The Light in the Piazza), and husband-and-wife Beverly and Kirby Ward – whose credits include many roles in multiple departments on Broadway and in regional theater (including a very short stint as the successors to the founders of Ventura’s Rubicon Theatre) – will be joined by ETC students and local community artists in one shared spotlight in the 90-minute revue. within hours of first mild onset, ultimately paralyzed Grace from the neck down. That was 12 years ago. Today Grace is as bowed and defeated as a sundrenched meadow.

“Of course I have new challenges, but we all have challenges. If you have the will, you’ve got to just figure out a way to make it happen. And I wake up super excited and happy to start my days.

Honestly, probably every day I wake up and I’m happy.”

The template here is for the interviewer to exult for the record. “Her smile lights up the room!” and “Grace is so brave.

SO BRAVE!” The mettle is in the CV, people. Between her having conceived and launched the foundation that bears her name, her gorgeous works on canvas (one of which Graces the cover of We Are Resilient; coincident with the August 13 event, her partial oeuvre will occupy their own gallery adjacent to the Faulkner), her UCSB degree in Music Composition, and her ambassadorship for creatives in our town, Grace is principally a businesswoman and expressionist dynamo.

In conversation she is also possessed of a kind of amused lightness – a perceivable whimsy. I can well imagine Gracie – one arched eyebrow conveying innocence and light – rolling over my foot with that heavy-looking contraption she sits in and making it look like an accident. “Woops!

Was that your foot, Jeff?” (I’ll admit we just met and I’m likely misjudging.) Her trials are neither a gaudy badge of honor nor performative “courage.” Grace Fisher is a woman on the move.

“I started this foundation close to 10 years ago now,” she says. Why? “When I was in high school, I would get invited to get-togethers and parties, and it was just a part of growing up. After my disability, I noticed I didn’t get invited to much. And so I was like, ‘Okay.’” The woman doesn’t suffer foolishness. “When I was in rehab initially, the arts were so good for bringing

me back to a state of positivity. When I came back to Santa Barbara, I wanted to bring that joy of the arts and creation to other kids and other people with disabilities.” Grace’s positivism isn’t unalloyed.

It’s real, and it’s tempered.

“I know that there’s something that is going to happen. I know some day someone around me is going to get sick and that’s going to be hard to face. But I feel like I’ve gone through a lot of hard things in my life. I know that I’ve come a long way.” Her expression is firm and unsmiling, but, yeah; there is that light.

“Letting go of what I thought my life was going to be, just being open to the possibilities, was empowering” she says.

Resilient emerged as an idea, Sissy knew the subject and the process. There was one fateful caveat.

“I’m a collaborator,” Sissy says definitively, “I do not like to do anything alone.

And I thought, ‘okay, who do I want to do this with?’” Sissy was otherwise not riddled with questions on how to proceed. “I have a vision. I know the colors. I know what I want to do. I know the layout. I have everything, but I need somebody to do it with. And I called my daughter.”

“There’s so many books out there,” Tiffany says, “written by people…you know, What Do The 10 Most Successful People Do Five Times A Day? And I can’t relate to that. I’m not one of them.

These people in our book cross all walks of life; gender, religion, race, identity, different kinds of trauma. And most of us are ordinary, extraordinary people. What I would say is, if you don’t read our book, talk to the five closest people around you and ask them their story.” And the story of Sissy and Tiffany writing a book together, of all things? The grown daughter laughs lightly, her eyes shining.

“When you truly take something on with somebody else, you learn a lot about yourself,” she says. “And this was not easy, nor for my mom. But when you stick to something, you move the needle a little bit every day. That’s the coolest thing of this. I never imagined we’d actually get to where we are.”

exults. “And I’m here with my 19-yearold granddaughter, Tiffany’s second child. She just returned from London where she went to school for a year. She’s madly in love with Shakespeare!” Sissy is electric with happy determination. (“Your mom is a firecracker!” I later mention to Tiffany. “Yeah, that’s one word,” Tiffany replies with a smile.)

When Sissy, her husband Bernie, and their two high school-aged daughters moved from Beverly Hills to Santa Barbara (Tiffany is the big sister and was away at Law School), it was to be a yearlong tryout of the embraceable beach town. “It was a sabbatical. We left Beverly Hills and rented our house out for a year.” At the end of that period the family took a vote. “There were four votes,” Sissy says. “The three of us voted to remain and Bernie voted to go back to Beverly Hills for the ball games and his friends. He lost.”

Bernie threw himself at their new home base, swapping Dodger and Ram games and UCLA for Friday night lights at Santa Barbara High and UCSB. “He became very, very active in Montecito.

Bernie became president of MERRAG, became the treasurer of Santa Barbara High,” Sissy says. “He even ran the Snack Shack at the football games. We had a great life. I was very active in the PTA and in the Jewish community…”

When in short order Bernie developed a fever and was swept away in hospital, Sissy was bereft. But this is a woman whose productive, reparative energies are fed by hardship. One day she saw the door ajar and walked into Rabbi Steve Cohen’s office. This may be viewed as an object lesson for busy Rabbis: close the office door till it clicks. She and the Rabbi ended up writing a book together, The Sun will Shine Again. The Rabbi had initially declined the offer. ““No, no, no, no, no. I don’t have time.

We’ve got 400 families!’ Sissy relates Rabbi Cohen saying, adding ‘…of course now we have 900, but then we had 400 families. He said, ‘I don’t think I have the time for this.’ I said, ‘Well, let’s try.’” The book was a smash and led to two years of speaking tours for Sissy. When We Are

Retail and Hospitality Updates This is a second installment of my retail and hospitality offerings in Montecito and our constantly upscaling neighbor, Carpinteria.

Just in from Friday, July 31, I have an official statement from James Rosenfield, owner of the Montecito Country Mart on the car crash into Toy Crazy that happened on July 28. Rosenfield, “We’re so glad that Monday’s accident didn’t result in any serious physical injuries and no one had to be taken to the hospital. The physical damage is being repaired and Toy Crazy remains open for customers”.

I stopped by the MCM, and the front of Toy Crazy is boarded up while repairs are being configured. To shop the store, enter from its courtyard door.

Next is the ever-upgrading landscape of downtown Carpinteria, the baby brother of Coast Village Road with a beach. Linden Avenue, once a surfer’s laid-back haven with quick bites, continues to transform its roots with upscale restaurants and shops. In the past year, it is the second home to established Montecito and Funk Zone SB retail and hospitality offerings, with Bettina’s new iteration, Tina’s; Alma Fonda Fina’s Corazón Cocina Sur; and second locations for Third Window Brewing; Macher; DART Coffee; The Shopkeeper; Channel Islands Surfboards, and Summerland’s The Nugget. and soon to arrive, Field and Fort’s The Larder at 1033 Casitas Pass Road.

New local business owners, Mark Armenante and Young Sohn of San Francisco (with NYC nephew Ryan Sohn), started construction on The Palms in June.

Seems there is some hospitality industry FOMO heading in to try their hand at prime real estate spots in lovely downtown Carpinteria.

Reading through respected realtor industry specialists, Goodwin & Thyne Properties’ (GTP) webpage devoted to Carpinteria, we find a review of the businesses, and advice. A special nod to GTP, Montecito Journal’s longtime real estate property advertiser!

GTP has the verbiage dialed in, “A stacked-use building spreads risk across three price points inside one address. The Palms building will house three establishments: a fun, casual take on Korean barbecue with a grill-your-own option on the ground floor (a nod to the original Palms where one cooked their own steak), fine dining on the second floor, skylight atrium through the building’s center, and a rooftop bar.”

GTP also mentions The Rincon Rooms and Restaurant on 4745 Carpinteria Avenue, with same density principle as Linden Avenue, building in, not out. The Rincon Rooms mixed use apartment/vacay rentals/restaurant at 4745 Carpinteria Avenue houses 24 apartments called The Rincon, a six-room vacation rental hotel called The Rincon Rooms, and a street-level restaurant TBA. In sum, the “DTCarp-caveat” is both venditor and emptor, for property sellers and buyers to be aware of what’s being projected.

I predict that questions remain concerning revolving door businesses leaving DTCarp either thriving or surviving, increases in tax base for hospitality, and the estimating of real estate values as the hot topic for the next five years.

M SHERIFF’S BLOTTER Illegal Camping / 1100 block Hill Road Sunday, July 19, at 03:29 hours Deputies contacted about illegal camping on Hill Road. She lives in her van, was lying down on a mattress inside the van, and explained to deputies she was “resting.” She had sunshade/privacy shades covering her window. Deputies returned an hour later to find the subject still there and now under the covers. Subject had reportedly been warned the previous week that it was against the law to camp in her car. As happened the previous week, subject refused to engage deputies in conversation when they offered her social services. She was cited without incident.

Illegal Camping / 1100 block Hill Road Wednesday, July 22, at 04:00 hours Subject was yet again contacted in her van while camping. First contact had taken place at around 01:30am, when she’d been warned about the county ordinance prohibiting illegal camping in her car. Subject claimed to be momentarily looking at her phone. Deputy returned to the spot at 04:00am and subject was asleep on a mattress in the van with privacy screening covering the windows. She was cited and told to move.

Theft / 400 block Lambert Road Wednesday, July 22, at 10:16 hours Deputies responded to a report of 10 antique books stolen from Reporting Party’s residence in the gated community. The antique books were leatherbound farrier manuals, worth “several thousand dollars.” The Reporting Party (RP) did not know the titles or authors of the books. The Reporting Officer reported that books had been moved from another bookshelf and placed where the missing books had been to disguise the crime.

The dust pattern around these replacement books on the shelf suggested they had been there for some time. A necklace and two bracelets are also believed to be missing. At press time there are no known suspects or time line.

Theft / 500 block Parra Grande Lane Wednesday, July 22, at 15:07 hours Deputies responded to a reporting party calling to report a leaf blower, hedge trimmer, and chainsaw stolen from a shed in his backyard. His home is under construction and has been vacant for over a month. There were no signs of a disturbance, and neither was there damage to either the locked gate or the shed. The front gate is secured by a combination padlock and the RP told me that the contractor and all his sub-contractors knew the combination. The RP’s neighbor has cameras that may capture the front gate in question. The neighbor is reviewing the footage.

ENDING THIS WEEK Fiesta in Full Force – There are only two events of this year’s Old Spanish Days celebration that are already in the rear-view mirror, while dozens more are still to come through Saturday. These include days filled with dancing and nights full of music at De La Guerra Plaza, nightly performances at the Sunken Gardens at the Courthouse, two different parades, a supercharged outdoor dance-dinedrink party at the Zoo, and much more. On the subject of Fiesta Spirit, I’ll just say this: At the pre-festival event in Montecito last Thursday, I watched with awed admiration as the quartet of young girl flamenco dancers, completely unruffled when the music cut out, continued seamlessly and energetically to dance in silence, finishing their routine without missing a beat to the constant applause of the crowd. If the rest of Fiesta has half as much perseverance and charm, we’re in for quite a treat.

ONGOING Music at the Ranch – The Tuesday night concert series on the grounds of Goleta’s Stow House, aka Rancho La Patera, offers perhaps the most picturesque setting of any of the festival sites. The tree-lined, variously shaded space with lush green backdrop is adjacent to Lake Los Carneros, and boasts farm animals – at the moment a bunch of young goats eager to be pet and fed through the chain link fence – and an authentic rural feel that, indeed, dates to the property’s construction in 1872. Blankets and chairs are recommended, and food and drink can be brought in or purchased from food trucks and stands. This week: The Doublewide Kings, the nearly ubiquitous, always adventurous sextet-plus-guests that play the heck out of classic rock, country, and psychedelia mostly from the 1970s era. Next up (8/11): The season comes to a close with Out of the Blue – another fine locally-based classic rock band whose members are of a certain age – that performed at this year’s Fest Forums convention, and likes to tease their fans on Facebook by posting pics and noting “You shoulda been there!”

Watt’s up? Saxist returns to SB – Two-time Grammy Award winner Ernie Watts is undoubtedly one of the most versatile and prolific saxophone players in musical history. Over a professional career that is just a year shy of qualifying for Medicare, Watts has amassed an astonishing CV as a sideman, guest artist and bandleader. He’s recorded and/or toured a laundry list of big names from jazz, pop, rock and R&B, including the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Cannonball Adderley, the Jacksons, Diana Ross, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Elton John, Pat Metheny, and James Brown. He was a member of the Tonight Show band during several years of Johnny Carson’s tenure and spent a quarter century with bassist Charlie Haden’s Quartet West.
