n Sunday, June 29, 2025, Santa Barbara’s historic Lobero Theatre will host an event that promises not only to commemorate the past but to challenge the present and inspire the future. Titled “The Earthquake That Built a City: Santa Barbara 1925 Earthquake, Then and Now,” this 90-minute symposium – organized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Santa Barbara Chapter – invites the community to reflect on the defining moments that followed one of the city’s greatest disasters – and the architectural vision it sparked.

A Century Later, Looking Back to Move Forward The morning of June 29, 1925, dawned with devastation. A powerful earthquake rattled Santa Barbara, leveling buildings and forever reshaping the

city’s skyline and spirit. Yet, from the rubble rose not only structural renewal but a shared vision – a city determined to rebuild with both strength and beauty.

This symposium is only one part of EQ25: A City Transformed – a collaborative effort of organizations and community members hosting an entire summer of events commemorating the centennial of this defining disaster. From architectural walks to exhibits and talks, there are dozens of happenings around town for this momentous memorial with the main event taking place on Saturday, June 28, from 12-4 pm on the 1100 block of State Street and the surrounding paseos.

The AIA symposium taking place the following day will reflect on that transformational historical moment with a dynamic panel moderated by the renowned Robert L. Ooley, FAIA – retired Santa Barbara County Architect and architectural historian. Ooley described the event as an opportunity for a “well-rounded discussion” covering four key elements that shape cities: his-

More Than a History Lesson

torical context, architectural evolution, engineering resilience, and global planning perspectives.

While rooted in history, this symposium is far from a nostalgic exercise.

With Santa Barbara facing contemporary struggles – ranging from housing shortages and retail vacancies to urban development stalemates – there is an opportunity for the community to learn from both the solutions and the spirit of our historic counterparts of 1925.

Admittedly, the challenges are different, as well as the social environment, yet a collaborative mindset and creative solutions are still within grasp.

Ooley pointed to State Street as a modern symbol of this dilemma – a street whose pandemic-era transformation revealed both the potential for rapid change and the paralysis of indecision. “Everyone seems to be polarized. Decisions don’t get made.

No real progress happens,” he said. He contrasted this with the post-earthquake period, when civic leaders and citizens unified around a clear architectural and planning vision.

That unity, Ooley believes, is a lesson we desperately need to relearn. “A lesson that we should have already been using is just consensus building… learning to cooperate with one another,” he explained. “If we don’t make any decisions, then no progress will be made”.

Ooley also emphasized that preserving Santa Barbara’s historic identity does not preclude modern creativity. “Preservation is about maintaining or reusing an old building – not forcing a modern city to be old,” he said. Within the city’s historic districts, he believes there remains “plenty of room for architects to express themselves” while respecting heritage.

This nuanced balance between honoring tradition and fostering innovation is central to the city’s identity and will likely be a recurring theme at the symposium.

A Panel of Voices Bridging Past and Present The symposium will consist of different presentations from the panelists before being opened up for an audience Q&A. The first speaker, historian Neal Graffy, will recount the events of that fateful day – sharing vivid stories of chaos, loss, and the rapid mobilization that followed. Known for his animated storytelling, Graffy will breathe life into the historical backdrop against which the city was forever changed.

Next, architect Anthony Grumbine, AIA, will explore how the earthquake accelerated Santa Barbara’s transition to the Spanish Colonial Revival style.

This aesthetic shift, which had already gained some traction before the quake, became the defining architectural language of the city post-disaster. According to Ooley, Grumbine will delve into how this stylistic transformation wasn’t just about aesthetics, but about cultivating a unique and cohesive identity in the aftermath of destruction.

Engineering perspectives will be provided by Sage M. Shingle, SE, and Garrett W. Mills, PE. Their presentation will discuss the evolution of seismic design and how cities can better prepare for future natural disasters. Their insights will trace the technological and regulatory advancements that have emerged over the last century – advancements rooted in the lessons of 1925.

Finally, urban planner Drew Wensley will offer a global perspective, sharing how cities worldwide have responded to disaster – either by restoring the status quo or by boldly reimagining themselves. Wensley, based in Toronto, brings international experience to the table, highlighting the power of intentional planning in times of crisis.

ocial gridlock reigned when crowds dared to “Imagine” a showcase of aircraft and classic cars at Atlantic Aviation in the Santa Barbara

Airport presented by the Montecito Motor Classic.

Dolores Johnson – the woman behind the visionary initiative – was however dealt a major setback on the day of the event, when she was found by aides to have suffered a stroke at her home. She

is now recovering at Cottage Hospital.

(And the MJ is sending her our thoughts and hoping for a speedy recovery.)

Johnson has spent more than 40 years involved with aviation and she organized the colorful event to introduce younger people to the joys of flight as prospective future pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, and mechanics.

Legendary car collector Monte Wilson served as Master of Ceremonies and event interviewer, while aircraft like the P-51 Mustang joined an array of other vintage aircraft on the tarmac.

It was clearly a day of high note...

by Lauren Gunderson, a visceral exploration of courage, legacy, friendship, and the enduring influence of three extraordinary women – Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Sonia Sotomayor – and their impact on the U.S. Supreme Court.

O’Connor – the first female judge on the U.S. Supreme Court – is played by Heather Avers. Valerie Perri plays the “notorious” Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the court’s first Jewish woman to serve, and in her ETC debut, Julie Garnyé portrays Sotomayor, the first Latina judge.

Veteran director Jenny Sullivan did an excellent job with the 90-minute musical show, which features 17 numbers played by local composer Sio Tepper on piano and guitar.

What stood out during this event was their poise and confidence in public speaking, as well as their comfort in engaging meaningfully with the adults they honored. Their speeches reflected not only gratitude, but also a deep sense of connection to the broader community beyond our school walls. This remarkable group of students has demonstrated a true passion for helping others, grounded in empathy and responsibility. I look forward to seeing how their compassion and leadership will continue to grow as they transition to Middle School and beyond. Congratulations to our graduating fourth grade class!”

The program included the grads singing their class songs, “Count on Me” and “High Hopes.” Then Richter read the traditional “candy” vignettes about each student, where she relates each student’s qualities to a particular candy bar – think Junior Mints. While reading the script she wrote for one of the students, “To the AlphGens, I’ve been waiting all year to say this, you slay!”

Richter, Green, and Cino awarded each student their diploma as the Presentation of Certificates, along with the school’s owl necklace and a gerbera daisy. Each student presented their gerbera daisy to their parents and processed back to the stage area.

After Green declared the students graduated, it was time for photo ops.

Laguna Blanca Lower School

T

he Laguna Blanca Lower School 2025 Graduation, “Go Owls!” was held on Friday, June 6 at 9am, outside at the Lower Campus Pavilion.

The graduates processed in to “Little Prelude in E minor” by Bach and took their places on bleachers in the front facing their families and friends seated in the lawn sports field area.

In attendance from the school were Head of the Lower School and Laguna Blanca alumni Brooke Green, Head of Laguna Blanca School Ron Cino, Fourth Grade instructors Susanne Richter and Ademola Oyewole-Davis, and the ever together cornerstone of the school, Darla McDavid, Assistant to the Head of Lower School for over 25 years.

Green welcomed the guests and provided her commencement remarks for the graduates, “I am incredibly proud of this graduating class of fourth graders.

Together, they form a vibrant community of unique individuals, each bringing their own special gifts to the Lower School. As student council members, they led three impactful service initiatives this year: a Warm Blanket Drive supporting our local unhoused community, a clothing and goods drive for victims of the L.A. fires, and a Food Drive benefiting the Santa Barbara Food Bank.

Beyond their outreach efforts, they stepped up as leaders within our school, championing social-emotional learning by organizing cross-grade games during

Hopefully by the time this is published we will be seeing the sun before the late afternoon, but I suppose any sun in June is cause for celebration.

Cheers to it being almost Solstice and time for the busy Montecito Summer.

For my stat happy audience, I’m delighted to report that January through the end of April were strong months in both volume and median prices. There

were multiple sales over $10M, a few over $20M and solid sales in the $5 to $10M range as well. May 2025 delivered 13 closings in the MLS, and three of those were over $10M. Interestingly, there were also 13 closed escrows in Montecito in May of 2024, but not as many sales over $10,000,000. That highest priced segment of our market continues to be strong.

quickly in all price ranges. A property that languishes a bit on the market is not to be faulted or suspected of being mis-priced. Value being in the eye of the buyer, we can simply acknowledge that many homes are yet for sale, including the one that will ultimately prove the buyer’s perfect match. Many homes on the market have been there for 40 days or more. Surprisingly, as hot as the market is in terms of historic sales volume and prices, more than a third of all listings have been on the market for more than 100 days – and most of those have had a price reduction or two along the way.

As for prices overall, Montecito is now a market where half of all sales are above $7,000,000 and the other half below, (give or take, based on a six-month average of sales). To put this in perspective for new readers or new residents of the 93108, in 2019, half of all sales were below $3,000,000 and the rest above, with the occasional sale over $10M. Now, just six years later, there is nothing under a million in the 93108, only rarely is there a listing (condo or cottage) under $2M and sales over $10M are commonplace each month.

As of today, June 1, 2025, here is the breakdown of what is available on the market in Montecito’s 93108. I’ve additionally included what is pending in escrow (not counting those in escrow yet not reported) and what sold in what

price ranges in May of this year.

ormally this would be the time of year when a large assortment of published and would-be scribes hunker down at a Santa Barbara hotel for the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. For 52 years the immersive swirl of workshops and socializing has earned the annual event a respected reputation far and wide. But confronting a serious illness back in December caused longtime Director Grace Rachow to cancel this year’s conference.

Earlier this spring, though, Rachow – largely recovered – responded to attendees’ interest in putting something together in lieu of the cancelled conference.

After almost a dozen previous workshop leaders signed on, the one-shot, single weekend Santa Barbara Writers Fest was born, set for June 20-22.

Other than the truncated duration, much is the same. Writers will spend hours each day in workshops where they learn from veteran published writers in such fields as fiction, nonfiction, poetry and more, including reading and hearing each other’s work to receive and offer feedback. One other small distinction from the decades-old conference; there is no central location, as the workshops are largely being held in the instructor’s home, office, or another space in town.

The “glass-half-empty” is having to arrange your own transportation, and switching workshops in the middle isn’t possible in this format. But on the plus side, most of the workshops will be offered in a more intimate setting than would otherwise have been the case, and that setting may be the professional writer/instructor’s own work space.

“You’re still getting the meat of the conference, even if there are no agents and we’re only together for three days,” Rachow said. “It’s small enough that some of the workshops feel like they’re almost private.”

Rachow has arranged for happy hours at different downtown restaurants and pubs so people get a chance to interact, compare notes and urge each other on.

“We’re going to descend on a different spot every evening so people can get a bite to eat or a drink and socialize,” she said. “Or if it’s not your jam, you can go home and write!”

The Fest has proved popular, and several of the workshops are already full. As of this writing, though, the majority of the workshop leaders still have at least one spot available at least once over the weekend. These workshops include Montecito resident Diana Raab’s The Memoir Journey, for-

You just probably won’t be as exhausted, which can be good for your writing. But the excitement is building.”

In between, the violinist said he’s hoping that a local philanthropist might be inspired to help him find a suitable replacement for the 1775 GB Guadagnini violin that Juilliard graciously let Chan continue using – from last year’s Fauré concert through graduation this spring.

“Now I’m back to playing on my normal instrument, the one that I used to audition for Juilliard,” said the amiable Aussie. “It’s a nice fiddle, but it’s nowhere near a Guadagnini. So if there are any Santa Barbara sponsors who have a hidden Strad somewhere….”

Quartet on Fire

hen-Juilliard graduate student violinist Anthony Chan got quite a shock when he opened an email from the Music Academy of the West in spring 2024 to check on his chamber music assignments for the summer festival.

“I was just curious where the other fellows I’d be playing with might be studying, and then I saw ‘…Joshua Bell, Jeremy Denk, Steven Isserlis, Richard O’Neill and you will perform Fauré’s ‘Quintet No. 2 in C Minor,’” Chan recalled. “It was surreal. I grew up with Joshua Bell’s albums – my parents used to listen to them in the car. Now, it was, wait, what?! I’m going to play with him?”

Chan will be back at MAW for more chamber music this summer, studying and performing with the Prometheus Quartet – his Juilliard-formed string quartet that’s been together in its current configuration for just over 18 months.

The foursome has been selected for the new Emerging Artists String Quartet residency, during which the group will study for four weeks under the half-century old Takács Quartet and other teaching artists.

The Prometheus Quartet will perform three concerts – including their own recital at Hahn Hall on June 18.

The quartet – which coalesced to play Korngold in Juilliard’s 2024 Chamber Fest – took their name from the Titan who stole fire from the Greek gods and gave it to humanity. Prometheus is also considered the author of human arts and sciences.

“We really love that idea of what fire represents for humanity,” Chan said. “It also reflects how we like to push boundaries in terms of our programming and our interpretations, delivering the spark of creativity to our concert audiences.”

The June 18 program is meant to exhibit the Prometheus Quartet’s versatility, showcasing both classics – Haydn’s “F Minor – Hob. III:35 – Op. 20 No. 5,” and Debussy’s “G Minor, Op. 10,” quartets – and far lesser-known works such as Lei Liang’s “Gobi Gloria” and Elizabeth Maconchy’s “Quartet No. 3, Op. 15.”

“We like to focus on contemporary Asian-American music, which is important to both me and (first violinist) Roger Shao, and actually all of us as we’re a culturally diverse group,” said Chan, who grew up in Australia. “‘Gobi Gloria’ has elements of Mongolian folk song, and there’s also a section that features rhythmic horse riding, which evokes landscape scenes.”

The Prometheus Quartet will also perform in the June 26 Teaching Artists showcase at the Lobero, where they’ll play Ravel’s Trois Poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé with pianist Denk, mezzo-soprano and Lehrer Vocal Institute co-director Sasha Cooke, two flutists and a clarinetist. “It’s just gorgeous and absolutely magical,” Chan said.

The quartet will close out the performance part of their residency appearing with percussionist-composer Andy Akiho on steel pan for his “In/Exchange” and “Aka (Red)” for the Composers-inContext concert on July 2.

“It’s a great opportunity to both collaborate and expand on our mission to play contemporary music,” Chan said. “I had a quick look at the parts for ‘In/Exchange,’ and they’re insanely difficult, but so fun.

It’s such a strange idea – combining the metallic nature of the steel drums and a string quartet – but somehow it just all comes together.”

Once summer is over, the Prometheus Quartet will begin a two-year residency at the University of Delaware studying with the Calidore String Quartet, which should solidify their status and serve as a further springboard for a desired fulltime career as a touring quartet. The Prometheus Quartet will also return to Hahn Hall for a concert as part of MAW’s

Stretching Beyond Strings: The singers show up at Hahn tonight for their annual introductory event – which has morphed over the last few years from a master class slot to an evening performance, now with an extra twist.

The 20 Lehrer Vocal Institute fellows who will be seen all summer in events – including the grand opera at the Granada, Opera Scenes, master classes, and a variety of chamber music and other projects – will perform a program called “Origin Stories in Song.” Meant to acknowledge the Academy’s roots as a cultivator of art song, the concert features each vocalist – accompanied by one of the five vocal pianists, who get four slots each – offering a song they selected to reflect their personal journeys. (7:30 pm; Hahn Hall; $40/$45).

Friday, June 13: The superstitious are often wary on Friday the 13th, but for local classical musical lovers of limited means, today might be your lucky day.

It’s the annual event when the Music Academy of the West’s Community Access tickets ($10) go on sale for the summer festival. As the program is designed to ensure low-to-moderate income households in Santa Barbara County have access to MAW events, more than 120 performances have set aside tickets for the nominal cost of $10, and as expected demand is high. Tickets are available both online and in person – the gathering outside the ticket office resembles the way people used to line up for rock concerts on sale dates – becoming something of a celebration in itself.

room. The chest could hold objects, was used as a seat and also as a table, and was convenient for frequent moves. Built-in church monastic settees adopted the design of the medieval household trunk or chest, and this led to the birth of the settee – which could be a seat, a bed, or (given its hinged back) a chest or table).

The armrests could hold candlesticks or tankards, while shelves under the settee could house drawers or act as footrests.

The height of the backrest varied and could sometimes continue down to the floor. In fact, the settee was often built into a wall or corner (when adjoining a fireplace, that warming alcove is called an ‘inglenook’).

By the 15th century, when the public house or inn/tavern was developed for travelers needing accommodation, the wooden settee incorporated shelf rests for drinks. By the 17th century, naileddown leather added a little sitz-bones comfort, and chairmakers began to explore the settee as a household design – based not on the medieval chest, but on the Windsor chair with a canted back, shaped seats, and graceful arms.

Country folks retained the tradition, and the rural parson or school master bench was popular into the 19th century, and was later adopted into the historical lexicon of the Colonial Look in the early to mid-20th century.

Back in Deerfield, Illinois, in the 1960s, my mother’s front room was ‘Colonial,’ (lots of Ethan Allen furniture) and we had a settee that was painted black with gold eagle stenciling.

Mrs. S sends me a shot of her settee in the Sheraton Style American Transition; a form which emerged during the American Federal period of furniture design. Her New England settee from the first quarter of the 19th century is of fruitwood, (likely cherry or maple), with a shaped crest back rail supported on wide lyre-form splats. The settee has scrolled arms centering the single plank seat which is raised on eight turned legs joined by a box stretcher.

She has had it for years and wondered about the value. In this market where antiques are no longer as prized as they were 25 years ago, these simple, understated, unfrilly, plainspoken pieces of furniture are still desirable. A good Pennsylvania settee can command

a price of $800-1,000.

y brother and sister-in-law live in a sophisticated New York high-rise close by the Dakota Apartments. They have a favorite breed of dog, and have cared for a string of Great Danes up there – suffering many elevator rides for pee breaks over the years. Lucy, their latest Dane, can be seen in the Central Park romp scene in the 2025 movie The Friend. Lucy is chasing the central dog character, the Harlequin Dane called Apollo. (Yes, there is a Dane Play Club in the Park!)

formerly belonging to Murray’s character, who was her friend and mentor. It’s poignant, because the dog grieves for his lost master. My brother Paul and Melissa identified with adopting a huge animal in downtown Manhattan, and with the theme of abrupt endings.

Lucy sadly passed away after the release of the film, and we all miss her 150 pounds and goofy expression. Like many treasured friends, the best ones sometimes have shorter life spans, and this is true of this noble breed, the Great Dane. Looking for a memorial for Lucy, I came across the Adopt-aBench program for New York’s Central Park Benches and Settees. This program, run by the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, has provided funding for the Park’s 10,000 benches with 7,000 adopted benches for 64 million visitors a year.

This got me interested in the history of the settee – but first, a run-down of the three important New York Central Park outdoor settees. First, the 1939 World’s Fair bench; divided by distinctive hoop armrests shaped to echo the circular walking paths around the Park, painted in Central Park Green.

Secondly, the straight-planked, slatted bench – which can be seen all along the Mall – was developed in 1858 when the park opened its first ice skating rink. More modern is the concrete and wood bench, which can be found around the park’s perimeter. All three styles are reproduced by Kenneth Lynch and Sons, NYC bench makers since the 1920s.

Where did the idea – one piece of seating furniture for multiple rear ends – even originate? That all began in the 10th century when a chest was one of the few pieces of furniture needed in a

Brilliant Thoughts Learning

W

hen I was studying to be a California school teacher – an incredibly long time ago (actually in the 1950s), one of the required courses was about Learning. The only important thing I seem to have retained from those lessons was something which may seem pretty obvious – the physical comfort of the student. The first thing a new teacher learned to be aware of aware of was the climatic condition of the classroom – in particular whether the windows were open enough, or too much. One student in each class was usually assigned the role of “window monitor,” and the windows were adjustable with a special pole.

But I couldn’t help thinking back to those lessons, some years later, when I was on the faculty of a “floating University,” visiting various countries and having at least a brief glimpse into their cultures.

One stop was in Osaka, Japan, and with a fellow teacher I was invited to visit an English class in a local High School. It was in the depths of winter and, by my standards, very cold. But all the windows were open, and I could hear some of the students sucking through clenched teeth as they breathed in the frigid air. I looked forward eagerly to the lunch hour, when we would be guests of the faculty in their own special room.

And indeed, the large Faculty Room was a little warmer, because it was heated by one centrally located wood-burning stove, where we joined some of the teachers who were clustered around it. And now, my big hope was for a nice, warm, satisfying meal.

The food – individual single-serve Styrofoam boxes – was brought in from outside.

You have probably already guessed what my delightful luncheon surprise was going to be… You’re right! If there’s any kind of food I hate, it is cold, uncooked fish. Yes! It was that favorite Japanese dish – SUSHI. I was so hungry that I had to force myself to eat some of it.

Another equally grim learning experience was even more directly connected with my own learning to be a California High School teacher. Pursuing that precious Teaching Credential In 1956, I was attending Los Angeles State College (now Los Angeles State University). One of the required courses was in “Audio-Visual Education.” This included such topics as making the best use of familiar media like bulletin boards and blackboards – but it was also concerned with more recently available devices such as slide projectors, machines called epidiascopes that can project images both of solid objects and transparencies, and most important of all, movie or film projectors.

In the final week of this course, each student was required to demonstrate his or her mastery of that machine by being sent to some other class on campus and giving them a film show. We didn’t know in advance what kind of class it would be, or what the film would be about. It turned out that my audience would be a class of student nurses. Their movie treat, I only then discovered, was to be a detailed depiction of a Caesarian Birth Delivery – in glorious technicolor.

I was in my early twenties – but to that point had led a relatively sheltered life. I had certainly never been in an operating theater or otherwise been exposed to the gory spectacle of a living human body being cut open, and a fetus extracted. I was both fascinated and horrified at what I suddenly found myself so unexpectedly witnessing on the screen. I remember beginning to feel a little unwell. The next thing I knew, I was lying face-up on the floor and staring at the ceiling. Someone had turned off the projector beside me and switched the

lights back on – and a bevy of Student Nurses was crowded around me, eagerly loosening my clothing, and fighting each other for a classroom opportunity to administer First Aid. How embarrassing! For the first time in my life, I had fainted!

I’m glad to say that, somewhat heroically, after taking a few moments to recover I was able to resume my projectionist role, and even took a few Ashleigh Brilliant born peeks at the screen. I took a moment during the VIP reception to interview a few Montecito exhibitors. Here is what they shared: Holly and Bob Murphy of Coast2Coast Collection with Claude Monet’s Les Villas à Bordighera, 1884.

Holly explained her Tablescape, “Using the Monet art, our imagination took us inside the villa if you were having dinner, and we created a luxury fantasy table setting with the view of Monet’s garden.

We used Versace dinnerware, Arte Italica glasses, Christofle silverware and water pitcher, these are heritage brands that have been around for 200 years. And flowers by Hogue!”

YMCA Preschool The YMCA Preschool 2025 Graduation was held on Friday, May 30, at 11 am, outside at the Y’s multisports court. Each graduate handmade their cap and wore their Sunday best.

The preschoolers entered the courtyard from their classroom to “Pomp and Circumstance March” by Sir Edward Elgar, with their teacher Cathe Spock.

Once in the courtyard, they climbed up onto a bleacher stand and stood facing their parents who were seated under a tent.

The program started with the preschoolers singing and acting out a song about growing up in each decade and being a superstar. Next, Hulsizer set up a video which showed each preschool graduate being interviewed by the teacher about their thoughts on the preschool and what they want to be when they grow up. At the end of the video, Reitmeier announced, “That concludes our program. You are now free to join your children for the reception outdoors.”

The Giving List The Horse Project

t was just a year ago that The Horse Project rejiggered their mission after a decade spent simply rescuing, rehabilitating and, as often as possible, rehoming horses that had been abandoned, abused and/or neglected.

When new accommodations can’t be found for the rescued equines, the horses get to spend the rest of their lives at The Horse Project’s sanctuary, where they are loved and cared for around others of their kind.

But a few years ago, Project Leader Linda Kiefer had an aha moment about the all-volunteer organization.

“We were coming here to help the horses, and we realized that the horses were doing as much for us as we do for them – if not more,” she said.

That gave birth to the Santa Barbara chapter becoming its own nonprofit, employing a new slogan – “People Helping Horses. Horses Helping People” – and the creation of the Better with Horses program. The initiative pairs people suffering from physical, emotional or mental health distress with the equine animals, a remarkably effective form of therapy, Kiefer said.

“Our rescued horses are naturally master teachers,” said Kiefer, who trained as a PATH certified (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) riding instructor and is also a certified Therapeutic Coach.

“There’s a well-documented empathic bond between people and horses.”

Kiefer said what used to be considered magic or “woo woo” has been scientifically studied by the HeartMath Institute, which showed that the horses’ huge beating hearts literally synchronize with those of proximal humans, or vice versa, inducing a calm and peaceful state for people just being around them.

“When they’re not being physically threatened, horses live in the polyvagal rest and digest state,” she explained. “So just by being with them, you don’t have to do anything to get more into that rhythm.”

The Better with Horses program doesn’t stop there, but rather employs the animals to assist in other therapeutic modalities, allowing the horses’ natural instincts and way to guide the human through subtle transitions.

“They’re herd animals so they can teach us a lot about relationships, trust, and connection,” Kiefer said. “They have huge emotional IQ. While we have intuitive awareness three or four feet around us, theirs is more like 15 12– 19 June 2025

feet. They can feel our body and our body changes. The horses know what’s going on inside.”

It doesn’t matter what people might be saying to cover up the inner issues, she said. Posture and words mean little to the horses.

“They’re like biofeedback machines.

They’re mirrors to what’s going on inside of you. And when you become aware and acknowledge what you’re experiencing and become congruent, the horses get calmer.”

Kiefer said the program teaches breathing and self-coaching tools, showing people how to bring themselves into a more beneficial state. “If you can bring your body into a resting state and allow it to calm down, whatever decisions you make from that point are a lot more powerful.”

That was the premise behind The Horse Project’s 2024 collaboration with Blind Fitness, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals who are blind or have low vision. The eight-week journey involved a cohort of those who were formerly sighted but now are legally blind. The group spent one day a week learning about and being with the horses – and thus learning about themselves. Leaving their canes at the arena gate, the participants were guided in meeting the horses, literally hands-on from head to tail, hoof to topline.

The work in the arena helped the participants to a sense of newfound confidence and a different mindset,

including being able to lead their horse through an obstacle course with only voice assistance.

The Horse Project’s Better with Horses program is currently midway through another pilot with Women Veterans in wheelchairs sponsored by the California chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. As with Blind Fitness, participants’ video testimonials rave about the effectiveness of the equine therapy.

Importantly, the “People Helping Horses. Horses Helping People” concept runs through these programs too.

“We work with the horses before they become part of the program to make sure that this is something that they’re good at, that they want to do, and are well-suited for,” Kiefer explained.

“They enjoy being around people and interacting.”

The Horse Project is fundraising to expand on both programs, including working with women veterans who are physically able but burdened with trauma or other mental or emotional issues.

“We are looking for people, organizations and businesses to sponsor one person or assist in underwriting the program and support the horses in doing it,” Kiefer said. “There are other pairings that we hope to put together and are prepared to do if we can find sponsorships. That includes first responders and cancer survivors who have faced death from different perspectives. We want to work with high school kids, and seniors making life transitions. It’s about thriving, not just surviving.”

The Horse Project also fundraises through its “Play with Rescued Horses” events that take place most Friday, Saturdays, and Sunday mornings. No previous horse experience is required in order to participate in the hands-on experience with the horses – joining the volunteers in the day’s activities to keep the animals healthy, happy, curious, and well. Walking, leading, bathing, grooming, lunging (a horse moves in a circle around a handler on a long tether), massaging, playing, and just hanging out are all part of the experience.

“We don’t always know what to expect,” Kiefer said. “But no matter how people arrive and whatever they end up doing, they always leave smiling.”

The Horse Project also continues to rescue distressed animals and rehabilitate them for possible adoption – an effort that also, of course, feeds into the Better with Horses program.

“That’s the People Helping Horses part,” Kiefer said. “It’s still half of what we do.”

Way It Was (Continued from 19 19)) all straightened out, the final death count was 11, with scores more severely injured. Due to the aftershocks, residents were afraid to enter their homes and either slept outside on their lawns or got out of town!

Tumbling Along in Montecito Montecito was not spared from the damage caused by the quake. Early estimates by the Morning Press reported half a million dollars in damages that included broken chimneys and tumbled brick and stone fences. As aftershocks on Monday and Tuesday rolled through the county, many residents of Montecito moved to cots outdoors.

held their services on the front lawn for a month.

Mrs. Rachel Peabody Ogilvy of Eucalyptus Hill, daughter of Frederick Forrest Peabody, moved with friends to Edgecliffe, the Montecito Beach Club.

Harry H. Webb and family, who had built a two-story adobe designed by John William Chard and named it Solbrillo, moved to the Miramar Hotel for several weeks.

At Casa Dorinda, Mrs. William Henry Bliss’s water tower fell and smashed the wing of the servants’ quarters. Anna Dorinda Blakesly Bliss was not at home when the destruction occurred. She had acquired the property off Hot Springs Road in 1916 and commissioned Carleton Monroe Winslow to design her vast and beautiful estate. Clearly recovered from the earthquake damage, the house today is the center of a retirement community of the same name.

New York clubman and capitalist, Harry Knight Elston, owned Il Deodoro on Schoolhouse Road. Back in New York, Elston had stints in varying business positions such as secretary/treasurer of the Shantz Button Company, director of Fidelity Trust Company, and stockholder of Eastman Kodak, Co. His house was severely damaged by the quake, and thoughts were that it would have to be completely rebuilt.

Chicago-born Ralph Isham was a Harvard graduate who became associated with the Chicago and Eastern Railroad and the Illinois Steel Company before dabbling in real estate.

In 1916, he and his wife Mary Louise decided to move to Santa Barbara, bought five acres from Elston, and built

Pompeiian Court. Built around a square courtyard in a Mediterranean style, it became known for its beautiful landscaping and a rose garden that became nationally famous. Though the house did not collapse during the quake, cracks appeared in the walls and marble statues were thrown down and shattered.

In 1916, Herbert C. Cox and his wife purchased 239 acres of ranch land, part of the original grant to Neomicio Dominguez. Cox, son of Canada’s top financier, wanted a southern estate to match his horse breeding and training farm in Canada. He called his Montecito lands Ennisbrook and set about demol-

ishing the humble farmhouse, building two polo fields, stables and a gate house.

On a whim, they decided to keep the historic adobe but added a wing and restored/renovated the rest.

In early 1925, the Coxes went to England and purchased a new estate which they gave the unfortunate name of Twatley. There, Cox could ride to the hounds to his heart’s content. In March, Cox sold Ennisbrook to Elmer J. Boeseke, Jr., who together with his father and other horsemen of the day, had founded the Santa Barbara Polo Club. Boeseke now owned the adobe which was badly wrecked in the earthquake. Since that

time, it has been restored, reinvented, enlarged, romanticized and reimagined.

Somewhere in all of that, the original adobe may still be encased.

Damage was also reported on the estates of the Hilltop Barons, Frederick Forrest Peabody of Solana, George Owen Knapp of Arcady, and C.K.G. Billings of Asombrosa. In fact, Billings’ home was so damaged that it was demolished and replaced by a new one designed by Carleton Monroe Winslow.

A New Day, a New Dawn, a New Life for Santa Barbara For some, the earthquake instigated panicked decisions to sell. Real estate

prices fell in the city and in Montecito.

One non-resident owner of an estate overlooking the channel advertised he was open to a quick sale. Other real estate ads offered “Real Earthquake Buys” and “Beautiful Montecito Home at reduced price.” One man advertised, “I am going to sell my beautiful home furnished and for less than the building is worth and must sell now.”

Nevertheless, even before the last ripple of aftershocks had faded, meetings were held on rebuilding. On July 1, artist John Gamble of the Santa Barbara Art Club suggested that the city support a uniform architecture that reflected its Spanish heritage. The proposal was enthusiastically received

by the citizens and architects at the meeting, and one of the first to endorse the idea was the Bothin Helping Fund which owned 12 buildings on State Street, while the Bothin family itself owned four more.

Henry Bothin, prominent entrepreneur and real estate developer from San Francisco, and his second wife, Ellen Chabot, had purchased a large estate in Montecito called Piranhurst in 1910.

They built an estate house which was completed in 1916 and purchased land north of Mountain Drive to build Mar y Cel, an enormous water garden topped by a tea house. (Yes, THE tea house.)

Bothin also put his real estate acumen to work and purchased 16 properties in downtown Santa Barbara. In 1917, he sold 12 of these properties to the Bothin Helping Fund, a charitable organization which donated to many

San Francisco charities and, locally, to St. Vincent’s Orphanage and both Cottage and St. Francis hospitals, as well as other local entities. The willingness of the Bothin family and the Bothin Helping Fund to rebuild in Spanish Colonial style set a sterling example for other State Street owners.

The Community Arts Association, which had been promoting the construction of Spanish-style buildings, now created an architectural board which would advise on designing in the popular new style. Many of Santa Barbara’s architects volunteered their time and talents.

Mrs. E. Palmer (Marie) Gavit of Cuesta Linda (today’s Lotusland) organized a hero fund to reward those who had put their own lives at risk to save others during the earthquake. She pointed specifically to the man who turned off the electricity and to Henry Ketz, engineer of the Santa Barbara gas plant, who made a stumbling rush on swaying floors through falling machinery to close the emergency valve and cut off the gas supply. Consequently, a terrible fire like that after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake was avoided.

Forget Your Troubles, Come on Get Happy The Community Arts Association also organized entertainments such as Community Dances and Sings. Mrs. Charles (Lucy Hubbard) Dabney of La Risueña Ranch stepped up to host the first street dance in front of El Mirasol Hotel and Alameda Park. She encouraged other residents to host other outdoor programs because the theaters and dance halls were closed during reconstruction.

Let’s Talk: Community Invited to Ask Questions at Montecito Wildfire Preparedness Meeting

On July 21 she wrote a letter praising the Community Arts Association, saying, “As a comparatively new member of your School of the Arts Committee, I beg to tell you of the striking impression made on me at the first meeting I attended, a few days after the Earthquake shocks had laid waste the City, impoverished and incapacitated many organizations, and brought severe mental and moral strain on the entire community.

“About twenty of your representatives were gathered together on a piazza, as the shocks still continued, to consider ways and means of organizing such Recreation Activities as would have a beneficial psychological effect upon men, women, and children, during the weeks following the general demoralization of regular routine.

“In a few moments, a Committee was chosen, the orchestra contributed, within two days the necessary permits were granted, the community notified, and a Street Dance organized, the memory of which will go down in history.

“Twenty-five hundred people, of all ages and representing all groups, turned out –

all meeting in common sympathy, and all rejoicing in the opportunity offered them to forget their fears and anxieties for a few hours, to the strains of good dance music, and under a starry sky…. …. “You are to be congratulated upon having grown into such an efficient organization and being in a position to fill the mental and moral needs of the Community in a time of such unusual emergency.”

One hundred years later, we can look back at the dozens of times that Montecito and Santa Barbara have come together in times of dire need to provide aid and support for the greater community.

The Santa Barbara Historical Museum’s excellent new exhibit displays hundreds of photos of the earthquake through a dozen projectors that each loop a different theme of earthquake photos. Several other exhibits related to the earthquake help tell the story. Definitely worth a visit!

espite the June gloom that is frequently obscuring our skies, the risk of wildfire looms. In coordination with all fire departments in Santa Barbara County, Montecito Fire Department declared the start of High Fire Season on June 2, 2025.

As part of our routine preparation for peak fire season, Montecito Fire Department will host a Wildfire Preparedness Community Meeting on June 26, at 6 pm in the auditorium at Montecito Union School, 385 San Ysidro Road.

“The Palisades and Eaton fires in the Los Angeles area earlier this year were devastating to witness,” said Montecito Fire Chief David Neels. “Those incidents left many of us who have been in this profession for decades feeling humbled and looking inward for opportunities to bolster our responses to major wildfires.”

Those heartbreaking incidents underscored the necessity of community engagement before, during and after major disasters.

Our community knows this well.

However, as the memories of Montecito’s past disasters begin to fade, complacency may begin to set in.

The Palisades and Eaton fires were a wake-up call and demonstrated the need for neighbors to connect and look out for one another.

On June 26, we are asking our residents to join us for an important discussion about community-wide preparedness.

This meeting builds upon the dozens of conversations our personnel had with residents who called, emailed, and flagged us down to talk about their questions and concerns following the Palisades and Eaton fires.

The Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will give an overview of the new evacuation program, Genasys. This program aims to streamline evacuation processes in the field by centralizing critical infrastructure data and pre-identified emergency zones. As a result, Genasys will improve the community’s awareness of evacuation notices so that they can move to safety as safely and efficiently as possible.

Wildfire in Montecito is inevitable.

There’s Paint in Them Thar Hills

A Smashing Success You won’t feel any pane paying at Santa Barbara’s latest walk-up food joint The Win-Dow, located on the corner of Chapala and Ortega, opposite Paseo Nuevo.

The eatery, which features $4.35 smash-cheeseburgers and inexpensive fried chicken, along with $6 milk shakes, is the sixth outlet opened by founder Jeff Goodman, who formerly worked at the Four Seasons Biltmore.

Others are based in Long Beach, Hollywood, Venice, Silver Lake, and the Grove – a shopping complex near Hancock Park owned by Rosewood Miramar developer Rick Caruso.

The property was formerly a Mexican restaurant which closed in June 2020.

Jeremy Tessmer, gallery director at Sullivan Goss, regaled more than 80 guests at the historic Santa Barbara Club, where the Montecito Bank & Trust MClub lunch featured stories of early artists who traveled West.

A number of these came for free on the Santa Fe railroad, which sponsored them in exchange for illustrations to publicize the “lore” of the West and encourage tourism.

Several of their works are in the collection of the Santa Barbara Club, the oldest private club in our Eden by the Beach, founded in 1892.

regg Afman begins his anatomy class by telling students he hopes they have an “aw-full experience.” “I don’t want awe-SOME,” he says. “I want you to be FULL of awe.”

A towering figure, Gregg uses his deep, husky voice to share his awe for God’s creation. “I love nature. I love the mountains. But there’s nothing more majestic than the human body,” he says. “I think it’s so important to learn anatomy. It’s fascinating. And there’s no substitute for enthusiasm in teaching and caring about every student.”

His passion has inspired students during his 26 years of teaching and coaching. Many of his former students and players have achieved significant success in their fields. His areas of expertise include human anatomy, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning and exercise for older populations.

Gregg arrived at Westmont in 1999 to establish the college’s first kinesiology lab and serve as head coach of the women’s basketball team. He had coached men’s and women’s basketball and track and field at Calvin and Hope Colleges in Michigan and served as an assistant coach for men’s basketball at Calvin, his alma mater, when the team won the 1992 national championship.

A three-time All-American track and field athlete in the javelin (1974-76), Gregg remains No. 2 on the all-time list for best career field goal percentage (61%, 192-315) on the men’s basketball team (1972-76). In 1976, he won Calvin’s Beré Memorial Award honoring the top senior male student-athlete for athletic ability, scholastic rank, character and leadership. He earned a Doctor of Education at Brigham Young University.

Named GSAC Coach of the Year for the 2000-01 season, Gregg amassed an overall record of 83-71 for five seasons (1999-2004). His first team finished 6-20, so he recruited four first-year students who helped turn things around.

Long-time professor and basketball coach Gregg Afman retires after 26 years at Westmont

The Warriors finished 22-12 that season — the biggest turnaround in college basketball that year — and were the college’s first women’s basketball team to reach the NAIA Tournament.

“Everyone on the team graduated,” Gregg says. “They’ve succeeded, have loving families, and remain friends, even meeting in Santa Barbara a few years ago.”

He stepped down from coaching in 2005 to focus on teaching kinesiology, taking his first sabbatical to collaborate on research at Loughborough University in England, a top sports science school.

There he met doctoral student James Betts, who walked in wearing a Dallas Mavericks jersey. Gregg asked, “You like basketball?” Betts said, “I love basketball.” The two instantly connected and bonded over their shared love of basketball. “We’ve been good friends for 20 years,” Gregg says.

This international collaboration led to many research projects, several directly involving Westmont students. With researchers at the University of Bath, the two developed nutritional practices to help professional basketball players.

Their study demonstrated that sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and carbohydrate supplements can help counter the physical challenges these players face.

The news came a few months ago that the annual Fiesta Stock Horse Show & Rodeo wasn’t taking place this year after a century of shows. Now comes word that there will actually be two such (competing) events over Fiesta weekend, August 1-3. Earl Warren Showgrounds, which previously hosted the Fiesta roundup, is presenting the unaffiliated Santa Barbara Rodeo Days, taking place Friday, August 1 - Sunday, August 3, 2025. The PRCA sanctioned event, previously just opening night, now lasts three days and features professional rodeo action and horsemanship, while adding a Fiestathemed carnival (à la Fair & Expo), live entertainment, and more.

Gregg has twice received the Bruce and Adeline Bare Teacher of the Year award and has co-led more than a dozen study-abroad trips, where kinesiology students conduct exercise science research at England’s University of Bath. Gregg’s perseverance and persuasion led to Westmont students being the first outsiders to dissect cadavers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He adds, “It’s been an amazing collaboration for our students to learn in a world-renowned program that has taught anatomy since 1705!”

Pinning Celebrates Nurses, Liberal Arts A large crowd celebrated the 15 recent graduates of the Westmont Downtown | Grotenhuis Nursing program at a pinning ceremony last month at Montecito Covenant Church.

In the student speech, graduate Rosalba Barbosa recounted the challenges the nursing students faced, including long clinical hours, sleepless nights, and emotional burdens, but also highlighted the growth and resilience achieved. “We didn’t just learn to read EKGs, insert catheters and think critically, we learned the true meaning of compassionate and patient-centered care, something no textbook could teach us,” she said.

She concluded by quoting Marianne Williamson in A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of ‘A Course in Miracles:’ “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest

Nursing faculty Heather Kuljian praised the graduates’ dedication and politeness, despite the challenges of the Christian liberal arts program. “These students had to study far more than just the science of nursing,” she said.

“Through doctrine and theology and philosophy and history and ethics, they learned the art of nursing. Those liberal arts parts were worth it because it’s produced dynamic students that are going to stand out.”

Kayla Lee was given the Healthcare Achievement Award, an engraved Littmann stethoscope that is funded annually by alumnus Ron Peterson (‘71) to honor and encourage future medical students.

he Montecito Association Land Use Committee (LUC) May meeting was held at the Montecito Library community room and on Zoom. The meeting was called to order by LUC Chair, Dorinne Lee Johnson.

Attendees were Steven Amerikaner, the newly appointed Montecito Planning Commission Chair; SBC Transportation Deputy Director Mostafa Estaji, Aida Thau representing First District SBC Supervisor Roy Lee; Megan Orloff, EVP Montecito Bank & Trust and former Montecito Association Board President; Sara Tyberg, Michael Gianino, MA Administrator Janet Casey; MA Executive Director Houghton Hyatt; and LUC members.

The 101 Highway Construction update was presented by Kirsten Ayers, PR representative for the project, with SBCAG Transportation Projects Manager Fred Luna and Joe Arnold from Caltrans. Ayers stated that five of the eight project areas are “completed” – Carpinteria, Summerland, Santa Claus Lane Bikeway, San Ysidro roundabout, Padaro Lane segment except landscaping. Still left to do is Montecito and Santa Barbara.

Key points from her presentation: - Padaro Lane: fixed the bridges, added a lane, updated parking, beach planking to connect with the Santa Claus Lane project; drainage and rumble strip are to be done.

- The 101 has a median planter in process which affects lane closures.

- Summerland: fully complete, new on/off-ramps from the slow lane which is safer.

- Montecito: under construction since 2023; end of June northbound will open up with new on/off-ramps, drainage, and bridges, will open up San Ysidro ramp northbound and on-ramp at Hermosillo Lane. Montecito is the most physically restricted due to land.

When the 101 was first built, it was not built for speeds of 65 mph or greater.

All the bridges’ center columns must be protected while construction going on.

Southbound lanes will divide in mid-July to summer 2026, and southbound off ramps will close consecutively.

- Southbound San Ysidro Rd ramp to close July 2025 to fall 2025.

- Spring Rd/Olive Mill Rd off-ramp closed till next year.

Johnson inquired about funding and the congestion of traffic the plans will cause, expressing concern over the possibility of accidents, especially in the winter months. Ayers answered, “The project uses local traffic patterns, we study the traffic patterns and work with the City of SB, we look at all of that.”

Luna added, “We look at every stage and analyze traffic patterns working with the City of SB. For funding, we went to Caltrans – who manages and implements many SB1 [Senate Bill 1] transportation project funds, we got funding from SHOP [State Highway Operation and Protection Program], Measure 8, other grants and federal funding.”

Thau brought up the impact of the closed ramp near the Biltmore and Miramar taking too long to complete.

Ayers said, “These issues were brought up at Architectural Board Review hearings on the Highway 101 project, and you should attend them.”

Ty Warner’s Four Seasons Biltmore updates were provided by Johnson who said she had been talking with Chip Wulbrandt the project’s attorney, Mark Lloyd, and Sean Lavelle. She said, “Ty Warner is working on the beach access stairs and will be doing the maintenance.

The swim platforms were delayed by the Coastal Commission, and SBC First District Supervisor Roy Lee worked with the Coastal Commission to move it forward for the summer. The full project is moving forward as planned using quality materials. They are on schedule to meet their anniversary.”

Thau corrected that, stating, “Roy Lee worked with the Coastal Commission for the swim platforms, and at their upcoming June meeting we hope it will be approved so the swim platforms will

be out for July 4th.”

Casa Dorinda is hosting its annual Scholarships Awards ceremony next week.

Every year the tony retirement home raises scholarships for staff members and their families.

This year they are honoring more than 40 scholarship recipients and celebrating a record-breaking $217,000 in scholarship rewards.

Since its establishment in 1997, the scholarship fund, in partnership with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, has been a beacon of hope for staff members and their families.

Collectively, over 800 scholarships have been awarded, totaling an impressive $2,100,000 to students, enabling them to pursue their educational dreams.

Alma Rosa Winery’s sixth annual Peace of Mind: 10,000 Steps in the Right Direction fundraising walk raised a total of $256,285, surpassing previous walks in both attendance and funds raised, bringing (to date) the total amount raised to over $1.2 million.

All proceeds benefit One Mind and Santa Barbara County’s Mental Wellness Center.

The winery’s owners Bob and Barb Zorich launched the annual Peace of Mind fundraising walk in 2020 to support community services for mental health, as well as research of the causes, treatment, and potential cures for mental health diseases.

Last month around 275 participants gathered at the base of Alma Rosa’s 628acre estate to participate in this year’s 10,000 step, 4.5 mile walk across the hillside vineyards.

Remembering Barney Brantingham On a personal note, I remember veteran writer Barney Brantingham, who has died at the age of 93.

All the exhibiting artists were nominated by UCSB faculty for this year’s show, which that was curated by MFA students Alexis Childress and Emily D’Achiardi. Titled common thread, the exhibition offers a brief glimpse into the bold and diverse practices shaping today’s emerging creatives at the seaside campus.

One Surfer, Infinite Ripples – The new surf doc Eternal Stoke: The Chris Brown Legacy has its world premiere at the Lobero Theatre, not far from where Brown got his start in the sport as a pre-teen at Hendry’s Beach. By 18, Brown had earned a junior world champion and was a member of the World Surf League Championship Tour for three years. But back home, Brown was also known for his involvement with the Santa Barbara community, becoming a commercial fisherman and local institution. When he died after a fall from the cliffs above Hendry’s in 2019, the local surf and fishing communities mounted a memorial – and commemorative paddle-outs packed with his friends and colleagues. UCSB-educated filmmaker Josh Pomer’s surf films include Chasing Mavericks about the Northern California big-wave break, and The Westsiders, which traces three Santa Cruz surfers from his hometown. Tonight’s premiere of Eternal Stoke opens with local singer-songwriter Burleigh Skidmore and an introduction by Brown’s daughter Chloe. Proceeds support both the Chris Brown Scholarship Fund, benefiting local surfers aspiring to professional careers, and the planned upcoming production of Pomer’s next documentary, John Bradbury: Creative Freedom, celebrating the legendary local surfboard shaper.

The goal is not only to increase awareness about the environment, but to expand the ways that these issues are represented and communicated. The four student-produced films comprise a varied palette of perspectives. Crossing the Divide explores the longstanding issue of habitat fragmentation caused by roads, and the detrimental impacts on wildlife population. The film also focuses on wildlife crossing projects – both forthcoming and in planning stages – that promise to restore movement patterns and support ecosystem resilience. The Bees and the Birds examines the unfolding environmental crisis of California’s native bees through the lens of a vibrant community garden that has become a safe haven for native bees, birds, and other wildlife.

Offshore dives into the story of a young man who – after losing his father in an oil rig accident – finds a way to deal with his new reality through swimming. The Bear Beneath looks at the implications of a recent feasibility report by Peter Alagona, the UCSB environmental historian making the case for reintroduction of the animal into its former habitat (provided that ecosystem has remained hospitable in the interim). The California Grizzly was hunted to extinction in the wild more than a century ago and survives today only as a symbol on the California state flag. Screenings of The Bear Beneath will be followed by a reception with the filmmakers in the lobby.

The festival features the world premieres of six short plays by competition-winning writers from Santa Barbara, Ventura or Los Angeles counties whose 10 to 15-minute pieces must feature two to six characters and minimal props and sets. This year’s plays include Breakable by Ashley Blom, Garden in the City by Sophie Goldstein, What I Did the Night of the Big Snowstorm by Scott Mullen, Extraction by Lisa P. MONDAY, JUNE 16 Rejoice: Rhiannon Returns – We’ve seen the great multifaceted American artist Rhiannon Giddens around these parts a’plenty in recent years, ranging from her appearance with the Silkroad Ensemble, concerts promoting her solo album, performing and serving as music director of the Ojai Festival in 2023 and more. Now Giddens – she of the two Grammy Awards, one Pulitzer Prize, and a MacArthur “Genius” grant – is going back to her roots with Rhiannon Giddens & The Old-Time Revue. The show includes Carolina Chocolate Drops collaborator Justin Robinson, as well as multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell, bassist Jason Sypher, guitarist Amelia Powell, and bones player and rapper Demeanor. The band draws on deep wells of expertise ranging from Carolina piedmont blues and string band tunes to Cajun and creole songs from Louisiana, rollicking fiddle and banjo breakdowns to fourpart harmony old-style country songs, and much more.
