Supervisor Capps’ Re-election Campaign, Victories, and the Road Ahead

I

t’s hard to believe it’s been six years since then Santa Barbara School Board Member Laura Capps threw her hat in the ring to challenge then 1st District County Supervisor Das Williams for his seat on the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors. Laura didn’t win, but she came a lot closer to defeating her veteran opponent than many believed she could, proving that she was, indeed, a contender. Two years later, in 2022, Capps stepped up once again, this time to run for the 2nd District Board of Supervisor seat, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Last week, at a well-populated Goleta Beach event, 2nd District County Supervisor and current Board Chair Laura Capps announced that she is running for reelection. Joined by many local officials, including her two most closely aligned Board colleagues, 1st District Supervisor Roy Lee and Laura with Josh Fryday, Candidate for California 3rd District County Supervisor Joan Lieutenant Governor (Photo: J North Productions) Hartmann, Capps addressed an audience of 75 plus supporters. The event was outside and still it felt like a room filled with energy, enthusiasm and whole lot of hope – something that seems to be in short supply these days.

Before her announcement, I sat down with Supervisor Capps at a picnic table to talk with her about her first Supervisorial term, and her decision to run for a second term. It’s true that on that day the weather at Goleta Beach could not have been more perfect, but still, what I felt I was mostly basking in was the glow of Capps’ enthusiasm for a job one could argue she was born to do. Here is our conversation.

Gwyn Lurie: Today is your kickoff for your re-election campaign. Four years go by fast.

County Supervisor Laura Capps: Definitely. It has been a lot of activity, of engagement. So many good issues. And so much more to do and my excitement only grows the more I dive into this work.

Your job as a County Supervisor is not an easy role, because on the one hand you’re being elected to use your best judgment. On the other hand, it’s important to listen to everybody and you’re not going to make everybody happy. How has that gone for you?

That part hasn’t been that challenging because almost always what I am hearing from folks is where I end up being. On a rare occasion, it’s not aligned, but it’s generally aligned thanks to a lot of shared values here in Santa Barbara County. But there’s of course that tension, and that’s where I just have to stay true to my inner core.

And maybe it’s my age, maybe it’s my wisdom, maybe it’s all the things I’ve done that have led me to this, and why it isn’t too challenging for me to know, Gwyn Lurie is CEO when I am at those crossroads, what to and Executive Editor do. Ultimately, the hardest part really of the Montecito is being faced with a series of tough Journal Media Group decisions and how to make some bad situations better.

Beings and Doings Rabbi Chaim Loschak and Mushkie Have Arrived

I

’m having a conversation with Rabbi Chaim Loschak – founder with his wife Mushkie of Montecito Chabad – and it’s impossible not to notice that he is bouncing his right leg at a frequency suggestive either of two strong cups of coffee, or the anticipatory effect on his physiology of a frenetic day ahead. I’m bouncing my own left leg with equal vibratory energy, as is my habit. Neither of us is jittery with nerves, but the fact is the rabbi and I are waggling minutely as we chat, like two guys conversing through a smallish seismic event. I ask if he had a look at the questions I’d proposed to ask.

“It’s been a little hectic. I can’t say I did the proper prep that I would rather have done. My personality is to over prepare.” He pauses. “I guess I don’t want to sound punny over here, but I figured I may have to wing this.”

The rabbi has made me guffaw.

“They were helping, and they’re both much more handy than I am, to say the least! And I was just thinking to myself, this is really beautiful, because I’m Jewish, they’re not, and this gathering is for everyone, a symbol of unity and light.”

The local support has continued to manifest apace.

“This year our menorah lighting is being sponsored by someone who’s not Jewish – Pat and David Wadors.”

Having worked with Pat for some years at Procore, I’m both struck by this and not in the least surprised.

“They’re fostering it together,” Rabbi Loschak says. “David is a good friend.

There’s so many people that I’ve met that have that similar sentiment. It just shows how beautiful our community is, and how welcoming.”

To my surprise, though the private lighting of the menorah has been ongoing for over 2,000 years, this public, civic occasion of communally lighting the menorah is a much more recent innovation dating to the ‘70s. The 1970s.

“The Lubavitcher Rebbe, blessed memory, started this whole concept of public menorah lightings in the ‘70s,” Rabbi Loschak says. Rabbi Loschak explains to me at length this towering, heart-centric figure of 20th century Judaism. Rabbi and Mushkie Loschak’s founding of Montecito Chabad and the menorah lighting ceremony draw from his teachings and example. “His idea was to add more light to the Jewish world, and to the world at large. It’s like you have a spark of divinity within you that’s perfect and wholesome, and if we could channel that for positivity, it’s a really powerful thing. And I’ve seen that personally here.”

He explains to me his inaugural experience arranging that first Montecito menorah lighting event, warming to the story as he unspools it. In the telling, he sounds about as house-husband-competent as I am and I’m guessing our wives could share some laughs over this.

“I was putting up the menorah on Coast Village Road and it was me, Beth Sullivan, and Robert Miller from the Coast Village Association,” he says.

A Californian Comes Home Rabbi Chaim Loschak, born in Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, was living in Brooklyn when he came back for a visit.

“Before I moved back here, I came to see if there could, and should, be more of a local Jewish Chabad presence or community here in Montecito. I met with many people.

Time-wise, this was actually Hanukkah four years ago.” And how was Brooklyn?

anta Barbara’s holiday season shimmered once again at the 4th Annual Montecito Sparkle Party, a festive and elegant soirée hosted by Michele Janin, Tom Linebarger, wine expert, and the Montecito Journal’s own wine travel writer Jamie Knee, and Joel Knee. Now in its fourth year, the beloved holiday gathering took place at the Montecito home of Janin and Linebarger, welcoming nearly 90 guests for an evening defined by style, warmth, and meaningful connection.

What began several years ago as an intimate holiday gathering has gracefully evolved into one of the most anticipated evenings of the season.

Guests arrived dressed to impress, fully embracing the celebratory spirit with sparkling gowns, tailored jackets, festive headpieces, and polished holiday style. The atmosphere was elegant yet effortlessly relaxed, with guests moving

fluidly between indoor salons and outdoor spaces glowing with candlelight under the Montecito night sky.

A highlight of the evening was the thoughtfully curated international wine collection, selected by Jamie Knee and sourced through Renegade Wine Shop Santa Barbara, alongside selections

Culinary offerings and kitchen helpers provided by Buena Onda and The Cheese Shop once again delighted guests, with vibrant flavors and beautifully presented bites that paired seamlessly with the evening’s wines. Adding rhythm and soul to the night, live Flamenco Gypsy guitar by Chris Fossek filled the home with energy and warmth, inspiring spontaneous dancing and joyful moments throughout the evening.

Beyond its elegance and entertainment, the Montecito Sparkle Party has become known for something more enduring: its ability to foster genuine

f you’ve been following The Society Edit and Local News Bytes, you’ve been anticipating the opening of New York-based lifestyle brand Veronica Beard at 1269 Coast Village Road. It’s likely on your way to Lucky’s you’ve stopped by this iconic brand’s newest brick and mortar store, which opened a few weeks ago.

We reached out to the store to do an in depth for our readers. The brand’s PR reached back with an official press release and photos for our readers per their protocol. Here’s what they wish to share: “Founded by sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard, the brand launched in 2010 with the now-iconic Dickey Jacket, redefining effortless, everyday dressing.

Over the last 15 years, Veronica Beard has grown into a complete lifestyle collection, making it a go-to for the

modern woman whose days and life are full.

The Montecito boutique captures the brand’s signature world through a rich, textured lens. A curated mix of organic materials, warm finishes, and thoughtful design details creates an environment where fashion and community come together, a signature of every Veronica Beard location.

ontecito will soon see significantly faster law-enforcement response times as the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office prepares to open a new substation at Caruso’s Rosewood Miramar Beach – a milestone that cleared its final Planning & Development hurdle on December 9, when building plans were officially approved. With permits ready for issuance pending signatures and fees, construction can begin immediately on converting an existing employee apartment into a studio unit and a separate sheriff ’s office with its own entrance and half bath.

According to the Montecito Association, the Miramar will provide an updated construction timeline, but operations are on track for January 2026, bringing deputies closer to the heart of the community in a location adjacent to Highway 101.

Sheriff Bill Brown praised the partnership that made the project possible, calling it “a public-private partnership at its finest.” He added: “Deputies will be able to meet residents in a more convenient location and remain in their coverage area while completing reports and other duties.” He noted the new office will join similar satellite stations in Goleta and Orcutt.

Caruso Executive Vice President Philipp Posch highlighted the collaborative nature of the effort: “We want to extend a special thank you to Santa Barbara County Supervisor Roy Lee and the Montecito Association for their partnership in realizing this important benefit. It was the right thing to do, and we were honored to help support the needs of the community.”

Supervisor Roy Lee emphasized that the new substation reflects the priorities of Montecito residents: “This Sheriff’s office is about being responsive, meeting the community where they are and making sure residents feel supported and safe. The people of Montecito asked for this solunewspaper tion and I’m glad we were able to deliver.”

A UC Berkeley grad, Rose authored Interacting Through Creative Arts Activities. The book, which sold well, is her way of helping kids use art to deal with mental health issues. Rose, “What I want to do is prevent mass shootings in schools by donating the remaining 60-80 hard copies of this book to schools that have had mass shootings, do a kindle of the book, and to create a model program for the U.S. to help kids through art.”

ontecito Bank & Trust, founded by Michael Towbes, Jerry Parent, and John O’Keefe, began in two trailers on Coast Village Road. Earlier this year the bank celebrated its 50th anniversary of being in business.

Towbes’ personal philosophy of service to the community informed the bank’s corporate culture from the moment of launch. That legacy is noted in the many ways the bank steps forward in service through the ongoing volunteer efforts of its employees, its nonprofit grant awards, and its community outreach programs.

One such initiative is the “Business of Month,” where a spotlight is thrown on a local business for an entire month.

Businesses so honored are selected by each of the bank’s 13 branch offices in Santa Maria, Solvang, Goleta, Santa Barbara, Montecito, Carpinteria, Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westlake Village.

For December, the Coast Village Road branch of the Montecito Bank & Trust is featuring artist Arden Rose, a Santa Barbara based impressionist with a successful CV reflecting her years of artistry.

She currently has 15 works both framed and unframed for viewing and purchase.

I met with Rose and one of her fans, Anne Towbes, chairwoman of MB&T, at the bank this week. In discussing Rose’s art Towbes said, “Is it the South of France or is it Santa Barbara? In Arden Rose’s beautiful paintings it is hard to tell the difference. She is internationally known, and she has painted and shown her work around the world.”

Casa del Herrero’s Annual Home for the Holidays

his year, the Casa del Herrero Annual Home for the Holidays event was held on Saturday, December 15, as a late afternoon cocktail reception from 3 to 5 pm, instead of its usual formal gala evening holiday event. This provided opportunities for guests to tour the gardens and buildings in late afternoon daylight to view the restorations they funded.

The cocktail reception in the back patio garden area saw guests arrive at their leisure, enjoying libations and hors d’oeuvres while a harpist played a variety of pieces.

Docents were on hand providing guided tours with historical information.

Seen at the event were top supports and funders, trustee members and CDH staff.

Noted were former U.S. Ambassador to Austria and owner of the Erdman House (a Lutah Maria Riggs house) Susan Rasinski McCaw, grandson of George Fox Steedman and architect Albert P.

Coming and Going Homer’s Odyssey

ommy Bahama, Chaps, Ralph Lauren, Coach, A/X Armani Exchange, Ralph Lauren Footwear – Homer Montecito founder Terry Pillow has been around the block. More recently, the gentleman has rediscovered what the block is for.

“Yeah, we sit outside,” Terry sings in his unhurried, melodious accent. The man’s southern purr is a rocks glass of barrel-aged bourbon. Neat. “We have a table and a few chairs, and people love to hang out down here. We’ve kind of changed the complexion of the street.”

You can say that again. When Terry speaks you feel you’re already recumbent.

On Nov. 29 singular luxury handbag maker Homer Montecito threw a small shebang to celebrate three years in business on Coast Village Road. Terry and co-owner/master leather artisan Steven Soria invited a few friends over to the cozy Homer grotto (1129 Coast Village Road), a deliciously enfolding space of burnt umber overtones redolent of fine leather and indeterminate spices. And

you can buy stuff there.

“Yeah, we had about 50 people here,” Terry sighs. “We had the McKinney Family Winery, they’re a big supporter of ours. We had good friends and a good time, and everybody was in real good

That artisanal consolidation seems to have worked. And then there is the Land Rover gig. Terry relaxedly explains.

“I have a Land Rover, and we had an event here about a month or so ago.

They had about 50 Land Rovers down on Chase Palm Park beach. We lined them all up out there on a Saturday, had a big deal. We did a key chain as an

Homer Montecito’s progress since opening three years ago has been that of a full-grain, oak-tan, saddle leather rocket. Third-generation leather craftsman Steven Soria’s having been made a full partner late last year can’t have hurt.

“I was running a company called Make Smith,” Steven says, “and it was better overall to not just bring me in, but to merge the two. I started designing this product line for Terry eight years ago now, was his right-hand guy. As these

Infrastructure, Safety, and Community Updates at December Board Meeting

building permit has been approved and is ready to be issued, allowing construction to begin once final administrative steps are completed.

The substation is expected to enhance law enforcement presence in the area.

Updates from Montecito Union School’s Superintendent, Anthony Ranii, highlighted continued student engagement and community participation. The school recently hosted a Book Bash featuring three authors and approximately 200 attendees. Afterschool enrichment programs, including cooking classes, Nature Rangers, and the return of the school band, are underway. School leaders also noted plans for January commemorations marking the anniversaries of the Thomas Fire and the January 9 debris flow. The Montecito Union School Foundation has raised $700,000 so far, to help rebuild reserves.

Aida Thau, with Roy Lee’s office, provided updates on recreational and infrastructure projects, including public input efforts for the County Parks Recreation Master Plan, new GIS mapping for trail systems, and progress on the Middle Road pedestrian path, which is expected to be completed by mid-February. Community feedback is also being sought for a new bicycle mapping initiative.

Montecito Water District General Manager Nick Turner reported that the community received more than 11 inches of rain in November, the highest total since 1924. Despite the historic rainfall, water supplies saw minimal benefit due to extremely dry watershed conditions. The district continues to move forward with capital improvements, including pipe replacement on Freehaven Drive, and announced its annual toy and food drive in partnership with The Unity Shoppe.

Association business included reminders that ballots for the Montecito Association’s annual election have been mailed and are due by December 29.

The annual meeting is scheduled for January 13. Treasurer Bill reported that while the Association is slightly over budget for 2025, revenues are significantly higher than the previous year, leaving the organization in strong financial condition.

The board also approved sending a letter regarding the proposed master plan for the Earl Warren Showgrounds, emphasizing the importance of preserving

he Montecito Association Board met in December to receive updates on major regional infrastructure projects, public safety initiatives, school programs, and ongoing community outreach efforts, while also taking formal action on key policy matters affecting the community.

The agenda was focused on the upcoming Highway 101 Santa Barbara North segment. Representatives from the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) outlined a project timeline that will begin in spring 2026, with construction expected to continue through 2030. Planned improvements include the addition of carpool lanes, reconstruction of the Cabrillo Boulevard interchange, and the construction of new bridges.

SBCAG also confirmed that the Los Patos southbound off-ramp will be permanently closed. Board members raised concerns about traffic congestion with both Cabrillo ramps closing, particularly in the Olive Mill exit. They also emphasized the need for safe bicycle and pedestrian access on Cabrillo Blvd throughout construction. SBCAG representatives will return in March with more detailed information on detours and traffic management.

During the public safety updates, Montecito Fire Chief Neels reported on the department’s recent activities, including participation in community events and the opening of the Regional Park Communications Center. He also addressed updates to the state’s “Zone Zero” defensible space regulations, noting that the governor’s December 31 deadline will not be met. Instead, the Board of Forestry is shifting toward a more flexible approach that allows greater local control. Zone Zero requirements for new construction will take effect once final guidance is issued.

Lieutenant Rich Brittingham, of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office, reported a relatively quiet month for residential crime, with no burglaries recorded. Recent incidents included vehicle break-ins, trespassing, and a fentanyl possession arrest.

He also provided an update on the long-anticipated Sheriff ’s substation at the Miramar. County Planning and Development confirmed that the

W

hen Kerry Irish Productions founder Margaret O’Carroll moved to Los Angeles from the hills of her native County Kerry many years ago, she wasn’t able to find any sort of regular productions of anything Irish or Celtic around Christmastime in the bustling metropolis.

So she decided to create something of her own.

The one-time Irish ballad, oratorio, and opera singer started out small but made it her goal to attract some of the finest singers, dancers, and musicians around to perform an annual show dubbed simply An Irish Christmas. The show is not just a performance but also a celebration of family and community that showcases some of the great Irish holiday traditions of the holiday season.

“I looked around, but there was nothing cohesive happening around, certainly not anything on a regular basis,” O’Carroll said.

Nearly 20 years later, An Irish Christmas has become an annual tradition not only in Los Angeles but up and down the California coast as well as in cities across the nation. A PBS special has become an annual addition to the public station’s pledge drives. The show has grown to feature award-winning dancers who have performed as part of Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and Celtic Wings and includes several world champions.

“People just love that I pulled from the community, which is really central to everything I do,” explained O’Carroll over the phone just hours before this year’s production was slated to open in Visalia. “We need one another. That comes into my work all the time, and I’m very happy to represent that community.”

Over the years, the show has evolved into a well-polished two hours of virtually non-stop entertainment, O’Carroll said.

“It’s honed itself so well. It’s a lovely balance between ethnic Ireland and modern Ireland and everything related to the folk theater culture which I come from.”

To that end, An Irish Christmas always features some of the great traditions of Christmas in Ireland, including butter-making, chasing the wren on St. Stephen’s Day, drawing down the half door and many others. Spectacular dance numbers include everything from Irish step-dancing to jigs and reels, while the Kerry Voice Squad enlivens the season by singing traditional Christmas Carols, backed by the Kerry Traditional Orchestra that also plays a variety of instrumentals to add to the appeal.

“We have a shoemaker segment in the show, which goes back to every nation in Europe, including Ireland,” O’Carroll said. “It was a popular profession way back when. It’s a very strange concept nowadays, but the shoemaker was revered in the village and the towns, so I created a whole segment around that.”

On the other hand, O’Carroll also applauds modern approaches to Irish music – which this year includes fiddle, percussion, guitar, vocals and whistle – as well as dancing, including innovative modern arrangements.

monitoring well on Montecito Sanitary District’s coastal property. While government funding seems to have dried up for the moment, critical data gaps still exist and there is more work to be done.

To this end, Montecito GSA recently adopted Resolution 21 which could support new private well construction in the coastal zone. To receive Montecito GSA’s backing, the well would need to meet certain criteria, be in an area where data gaps exist, and guarantee permanent monitoring access. The resolution serves to further Montecito GSA’s effective management of the basin and fiscally responsible implementation of the Groundwater Sustainability Plan. Well permitting authority resides with the County with input from the Coastal Commission and conversations with these entities are ongoing.

What makes a well suitable for a monitoring program? Considerations include location, depth, and construction methods.

Interested property owners with existing or prospective wells, particularly in the coastal zone, are encouraged to contact Montecito GSA to discuss possible participation.

C

ollaborative, data-focused work is at the center of the Montecito Groundwater Sustainability Agency’s (Montecito GSA) activities and their Groundwater Sustainability Plan.

Public or private wells that provide direct access to the groundwater supply can be used to collect needed data. In addition to public wells owned by Montecito Water District, more than 50 private wells now participate in monitoring programs related to conditions such as seawater intrusion, groundwater quality, groundwater levels, and metered extractions.

More typical around the state are groundwater basins with a relatively small number of high-producing wells that supply groundwater for uses such as municipal and/or agriculture. Montecito is unique in that there are several hundred relatively low producing wells, public and private, that access a geologically intricate basin to provide water for individual and group uses in a relatively small geographic area. Current and continued private involvement are key to establishing and maintaining truly representative monitoring networks with relevant data.

Using new or existing wells saves the expense of constructing and maintaining a dedicated monitoring well. Avoiding costs for constituents is a priority for Montecito GSA which is funded through a property tax assessment based on the size of any parcel overlying the basin ($120 per acre).

Unity’s Early New Year’s Eve Event The Burning Bowl ceremony was a perennially popular pair of gatherings at Unity of Santa Barbara taking place on New Year’s Eve and repeated on January 1. Following words of wisdom and inspiration, and musical performances, participants wrote what they wanted to let go of the current year, imbuing it on pieces of flash paper and then filing up to watch them vaporize in the bowl-contained fire. Everyone then had the opportunity to write a love letter to themselves, which would be mailed to them six months later.

The ceremonies have changed or been discontinued over the last few years, but are back as part of the regular Sunday Service on December 28, now titled as Sacred Bowl Ceremony, where we can let go of what no longer serves us, and open our hearts to divine guidance. illy Endowment Inc. has awarded a nearly $5 million grant to Westmont for the college’s Sacred Stories Project, which will uncover, share, and celebrate the vocational journeys of Christian young adults.

Westmont joins 60 other U.S. organizations that have received grants through the endowment’s National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life since 2024. The groups include media organizations, denominational judicatories, church networks, publishers, educational institutions, congregations, and other nonprofit charitable organizations.

This sweeping five‑year Sacred Stories Project will inspire action, deepen understanding, and amplify hope within and beyond Santa Barbara’s Christian community by weaving individual stories into a collective tapestry. The Sacred Stories Project will draw on Westmont’s whole network to discover, develop, and share stories of young adult vocational journeys. Westmont professors will contribute storytelling tools from their own disciplines; churches and nonprofits will work with young adults to draw out the meaning they’re discovering in those communities. Young adults will find many opportunities to explore their stories, ranging from visual art and musical exhibitions to intergenerational dialogue and mentoring.

sends me a fabulous art nouveau style figural lamp for the table, a nude woman supported by a peacock. The outstretched arm of the woman holds the light fixture: a globe shape, encrusted with jewel-like crystals, that glows when lit. JP is wondering if this is “something.”

In the history of lighting design, well, yes, it is something. Because in the first quarter of the 20th century, the era of Art Nouveau in Europe, for some reason early lamp makers focused on the idea that seminude, nubile young females

should be both the subject, and the “holders of the light,” for the newfangled thing called a “lamp.”

Because the Art Nouveau period was a high point for naturalistic, organic (think non-geometrical) lines, and since the period loved the exoticism of the female nude – and the association of the nude to nature – oftentimes lamp makers included a bronze of the nude with a certain type of shade; for example, a Nautilus shell, or a bronze shade encased with pinpoints of jewels, such as in JP’s lamp. The reasons for this were many: it was a way to celebrate the beauty of the nude in a tasteful, novel way (electric lights were new), and it was a way to celebrate the fact that electricity was “illuminating” the ability to showcase the nubile female.

Here is a great example. The original was made (1910) for the bar of the Adam’s Mark Hotel, the seminude bronze figure into which the electricity was channeled; she (a bronze elegantly draped figure) held a lantern in miniature, lit by a bulb. This served a few purposes: the bar, which was limited to males, could admire her form, and the bar, which was dark, needed to have light.

In the Art Nouveau period, the collision between the modern world of technology and the old world of beautiful sculpture resulted in the beautiful excessive elements of design. Only the very wealthy could afford a lamp, and indeed only the wealthy could afford electricity in their homes or businesses. I find it amusing that the people who could have such lighting preferred to use the semi-naked female form as the “lamp base!”

JP asks if her lamp is original to the period, and I do not think it is “period” (1900-1925) Art Nouveau, but a later copy from the 1980s when we had a resurgence of Art Nouveau in the U.S. Her lamp is “after” the design by Marcel Wolfers (Belgian 1886-1976); and when we say “after” we mean that someone got ahold of the mold or a lamp from 1910 by Wolfers, and made a plaster cast, then had it cast in bronze to sell on 1980s market... and yes, because there were so few copyright issues from that period, it was done.

Some of the most notable lamps of the period were modeled on the great beauties of the age, 1900-1925, such as the actress Loïe Fuller (1901) inspired the lamp maker François-Raoul Larche.

Fuller is reenacting a famous stage roll, in a lamp, seminude, and holding a globe which is lit in this small table lamp, and such a thing can sell for $4,000.

Another highly valued lamp is a famous beauty of the age holding aloft a nautilus shell, and that shell is the shade, and this will sell for $4,000. Art was a great excuse for female nudity.

One of the most interesting techniques of the era was to make the lightbulb itself part of the erotica.

So, in some cases, the seminude is holding a lightbulb encased in a shell or encased in a globe in her hand, but perhaps the most inventive of all the techniques was to have the light ‘glow up’ inside her skirts (not her skirts, but the bronze of the nude’s skirts) showing both her form, her legs, and allowing the peep show to also be an actual lamp. Such a one is a lamp done in 1910 by the lamp maker Laporte-Blairsy, where a wonderfully semi-clothed actress, who is playing a Classical role (draped in Grecian flowing robes) is caught in the act of spinning, the robes swirling metaphorically outward. Thus, this outward arch of her robes is the perfect shade for the 1910 lightbulb! A lamp like this will sell for $4,000-5,000.

There are so many songs to choose from and Christmas carols to sing. We have such a lovely, cohesive group this year, with several of our dancers coming off or heading out to major tours, as well as current world champions.”

O’Carroll had a lot to boast about as the show was set to open last weekend on a short tour that concludes at the Lobero Theatre on December 22, one of the company’s favorite venues.

“We always get such an unbelievable crowd there,” she said. “I don’t know why, but it’s great. I think they appreciate the high quality and respond.”

Kerry Irish will return to the Lobero in the spring for St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, a newer show that had its first-ever performance here in Santa Barbara and comes back again on the day of the actual holiday, March 17.

Back in 2017 when Susan Keller founded Santa Barbara Revels to make our city one of several in the nation to present annual Christmas-season traditional cross-cultural shows, she turned to fellow Montecitan Maggie Mixsell to serve as director.

The acting coach, teacher, and director – whose credits include running the Speaking of Stories series for many years – helmed the December Revels shows for almost a decade before health challenges forced her to step down.

Now, Mixsell has returned to the fold for Revels’ 18th annual production, one that represents both a full-circle moment and something entirely new for the series.

“I believe in Revels, and I’ve always liked it, and now that Susan is wanting to transition out of the producing role, she asked me to come back and direct,” Mixsell explained. “She told me that she came in with me and she wanted to go out with me.”

Mixsell not only agreed, but met the moment in making it possible for Keller to conjure up one of the longstanding national Revels shows that had yet to be produced here in town: The Celestial Fools – A Magical Winter’s Tale. It’s a solstice fable of a traveling troupe of players from the Middle East called Sun-fool, Moon-fool and Star-fool who visit a mythical village somewhere in Europe. This is an arguably timely story of enlightenment wherein a meeting of the arts, culture, and philosophy of the blossoming Eastern world meets the rural folk world of early Renaissance life.

“We knew that we could not present this tale without finding a Sun, Moon and Stars that authentically represent the arts and wisdom of the East,” Keller wrote in the program’s Artistic Director notes. “We are honored to have three master artists Tom Hinshaw, Ivy Vahanian, and Matthew Tavianini.”

Tavianini is an established Reveler both as performer and director, but it was Mixsell’s connection that enticed Hinshaw and Vahanian, longtime favorites in the Santa Barbara theater world, to join the Revels cast for the first time.

“Why not get the best for these principal roles,” Mixsell explained. “They are really bringing the story to life, working extremely hard to give this play a whole lot of personality.”

The three actors not only play the “wise fools” who bring sophistication, knowledge, and amusement into the village to entertain and educate the townsfolk,

don’t know about you, but when the calendar flips to December, I start seeing red. Red in the ambient glow of holiday lights, to be sure. And red in my wine glass.

Maybe it’s the cooler weather and the darker nights. Or the feel-good buzz of the most festive time of year. Or meals that are more rich, more flavorful and more communal. But the fact is, at our house chilly whites take a backseat to their crimson counterparts, making the holidays the perfect excuse to drink more red.

That’s why I popped the cork on the Tercero 2020 Cinsault ($40) last week. (Err, actually – unscrewed the cap; Tercero founder and winemaker Larry Schaffer has been all-screwcap all the time for almost two decades!)

Cinsault is a varietal I haven’t sipped in several years, to be frank, but a refreshing alternative to the pinots and cabs that tend to circulate a lot more regularly across our house. Pronounced “sin-so,” this Rhône grape is related to syrah and grenache, and it’s usually used as a blender – it’s rare to see it bottled as a standalone varietal. Schaffer says that’s got a lot to do with its size.

“Cinsault produces a huge berry, so the skin-to-juice ratio is a lot different,” says Schaffer, who use full grape clusters, stems included, when he makes this wine. “It doesn’t have a lot of color or structure, so I call it the ‘unplugged red.’

It’s like a beautiful acoustic guitar.”

The grapes for the 2020 Tercero Cinsault came from Zaca Mesa Vineyard along Foxen Canyon, in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley; the property has since pulled its cinsault vines, though, most likely a byproduct of this rare wine’s limited market appeal.

It’s a red wine, though, well worth seeking out and, thanks to its approachability, one that’s perfect for the holiday table. It’s splashy and bright thanks to lower alcohol – 12.8% – and ringing acidity. And yet despite its lightness, this wine is surprisingly interesting, layered and complex, especially for a light red that’s more than five years old. It’s clear-crystal scarlet in color, with strawberry and cranberry flavors, accented by dusty and herbal notes, with a subtle savoriness in the finish. A pretty wine that could easily be served slightly chilled, this one’s a perfect pair with your favorite holiday duck, turkey or chicken dishes. Mediterranean and curried dishes

ne of the major fallouts from the Covid pandemic was the effects of isolation on every member of society. But without question, the segment of the population hardest hit by the closures and other restrictions that took place in 2020-21 were America’s school children.

Youngsters whose brains are still developing were yanked out of the social environments not only in schools, but after-school programs and many other gathering places. No wonder statistics show a marked increase in children and adolescents experiencing challenges to emotional wellbeing, including documented increases in anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. The pandemic focused attention on the urgency to address our youth mental health crisis.

Perhaps a little more surprisingly, the need for mental health services has not declined, even though the pandemic has been over for more than three years.

On top of the lingering effects of isolation during the shutdowns, political and economic upheaval have also wreaked havoc on stability. While our idyllic beach communities might seem immune to much of what’s happening elsewhere, plenty of problems still show up here.

Fortunately, Family Service Agency (FSA) of Santa Barbara County, whose organizational history dates to the 1800s, was already addressing mental health concerns long before the pandemic proved the need. FSA has long been providing school counseling for many of the county’s major school districts, including three of the largest in South County. The nonprofit’s School-Based Counseling program delivers therapy, case management, home visits, and critical incident response services. Available in South County at K-12 school campuses in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Lompoc, the program provides a convenient, familiar, and safe environment for children, adolescents, and their families.

“It’s not like the need for mental health and support just disappeared after schools reopened,” said Carol Morgan, MA, LMFT, School Counseling Program Manager for FSA in south and mid county. “It’s been pretty stable since the pandemic. It’s just now the stressors and the traumas are different.”

For example, immigration raids are having a pronounced effect analogous to stressful concerns over Covid at their worst..

“Kids have had a family member who has been deported or is facing removal, but it goes far beyond that,” Morgan said.

“The fear of ICE – just that looming fear that this could potentially impact a family member, a friend, or members of the community – that alone is more than enough to create a mental health struggle.”

Of course, the immigration issues that have surfaced in 2025 only add to the ongoing and additional problems that can affect youth’s mental health.

“That’s just one layer of stress that they’re dealing with,” Morgan said. “Put that on top of economic stress and basically, even though the pandemic’s over, we have other stress and traumas that make the need for mental health support just as great as it’s ever been. But the funding, unfortunately, is not proportionate. So that’s our biggest challenge.”

The issue is partly this; as the pandemic has waned, so has the governmental and other support for some social services, including non-academic counseling for students, Morgan said.

“Most of that pandemic-related mental health money that showed up quickly in 2020 is no longer available now, and there’s been a drop in funding that’s been available to the school districts to hire mental health professionals,” she said.

“Donors should know that with the decline of funding the school districts receive to support mental health, we’ve had to rely more on private donors and foundations. That’s our biggest challenge and struggle now.”

What also hasn’t changed is how critical the need remains among students from lower-income families or even those not facing economic challenges.

That’s where FSA’s school-based mental health services are vital.

“For some students, our services are the only feasible option to get this mental health support,” Martin said.

Recognizing the importance of groundwater throughout California, the SGMA legislation provided an opportunity for organized local management of more than 125 geologically defined groundwater basins statewide that were categorized as medium or high priority. As was the case for Montecito, GSAs formed successfully for the majority of basins and satisfied the State requirement with a sufficiently documented Groundwater Sustainability Plan (Plan). However, a handful of basins are now under State management because their Plans were deemed incomplete.

“The foundation for Montecito GSA’s Plan is a collaborative, knowledge-based process informed by the best available data, science, and information,” said General Manager Nick Turner. “The Plan is specific to the conditions, risks, geology, and users of this basin, and the end goal is long-term sustainable use of the groundwater basin for the benefit of all stakeholders. The more private participation we have, the better equipped we are to ensure success.”

In addition to detailing the Montecito Groundwater Basin’s characteristics, the Plan establishes criteria to be measured and identifies specific results that might indicate risk for “undesirable results.” This SGMA lingo refers to the six most notorious threats to groundwater, the most relevant locally being possibilities for seawater intrusion, degradation of water quality, and chronic lowering of groundwater levels. The goal is to have ongoing, accurate, and timely data collection, and modeling, to regularly validate the basin’s health.

This was the final event for the eight students who each shared a personal story about the impact of the program before they received their certificate in theological leadership.

President Gayle D. Beebe, who taught several of the theological leadership courses, spoke about the importance of theological education and summarized the concepts the students had learned, including human nature, the human condition, ultimate reality, and sin. He referenced thinkers like Pascal and Augustine to emphasize the Christian view that humans are both great and wretched, with Jesus Christ as the remedy.

“I think all of us that give our lives to theological education and to the purposes of God are always interested in how we transmit knowledge and understanding from one generation to the next,” he said. “[We’re] committed to an understanding of human flourishing that honors God and furthers His purposes, through the work of the 18 – 25 December 2025

college and through our own ministry as individuals. This is just one example of the ways in which the college has tried to create programs that honor God, furthered His purposes, and really benefited from your flourishing as students.”

Telford Work, professor of theology, offered a charge to students by reflecting on the learning experiences of a group.

“You learned the treasury of Christian biblical knowledge: history, theology, formation, ethics, leadership, world engagement, and spirituality,” he said.

“Therefore, use the old and new treasures that are hidden in that storehouse, and bring them out, especially as you find them fruitful.”

Westmont launched the new program, which offers a post-baccalaureate certificate, in January 2025 to cultivate wisdom in Christian leaders.

It’s designed for ministry professionals, laypeople eager to grow spiritually, and recent college graduates considering seminary. Beebe; Work; Holly Beers, associate professor of religious studies; Gary W. Moon, director of Conversatio Divina: A Center for Spiritual Formation; and Sandra Richter, Gundry professor of biblical studies, teach the eight classes that are

In-person, in-school therapy also obviates any possible transportation issue, even if they could fit outside help into their schedules.

FSA also continues to bridge whatever language gap may exist, as FSA’s SchoolBased Counseling program is provided in students’ native language, most often Spanish, even if they’re officially bilingual, Martin said. In Santa Maria, FSA even provides at least one counselor fluent in Mixteco to meet the needs of a segment of the local population that speaks the language.

Altogether FSA is on site with on-campus mental health counseling in seven school districts across the county, now including Goleta. In the last fiscal year, 735 youth received 8,143 hours of counseling, with laudable effectiveness as indicated by a 98 percent satisfaction figure among surveyed parents and students, with results in the 80s for maintaining or improving interest and attendance in school. An additional 840 individuals participated in trainings in QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), suicide-prevention tools YMHFA (Youth Mental Health First Aid) and TMHFA (Teen Mental Health First Aid).

“Maybe people have adapted fairly well to the uncertainty that was generated by the pandemic, but the nature of life is that once you get stability in one issue, another issue shows up,” Martin

said. “We’re ready.”

“Many students are super busy after the school day, either with activities or perhaps having to work a part-time job to help out the family, or they need to be home to look after younger siblings.

They don’t have any other time in the day to schedule with a therapist.”

The pandemic created more opportunities for telehealth including virtual therapy, which largely remains available.

But it’s not always as effective for those of student age, Martin said.

“We’ve noticed that many of the teens, and especially the young kids, gravitate toward in-person therapies,” she said.

“They don’t engage as favorably with telehealth. So even though the timing makes it possible to see someone, it defeats the purpose if they’re not able to engage effectively. Seeing someone in person is still the best way for them to access the support they need. I can’t emphasize how important it is that this service is available for students during the school day.”

The schools themselves value that they are able to provide the service through FSA, allowing students to attend their therapy sessions during the school day.

Farewell to Lou Bar Lou, the French-Mediterranean restaurant on Coast Village Road, is set to close. Opened by restaurateur Warner Ebbink and Chef Brandon Boudet, the restaurant replaced Oliver’s and featured a redesigned dining room and a menu built around shareable dishes and local ingredients. Popular items included the Steak au Poivre, Halibut Almondine, and Sea Urchin Spaghetti. Boudet and Ebbink were regularly on site, aiming to make Bar Lou a comfortable neighborhood spot. As the team prepares to shut down operations, the closure marks the end of a short but well-regarded addition to Montecito’s dining landscape.

onsidered critically endangered today, the Kākāpō is a nocturnal flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand. Captured in a hand-colored lithograph, this particular Kākāpō belongs to the 1873 book A History of the Birds of New Zealand

by Walter Lawry Buller. Buller wrote from a desire to record a complete life history of his homeland’s interesting and diverse birdlife, at a time when it was already apparent that some species there would be lost forever. Today habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like cats and dogs pose the greatest threat to the Kākāpō. Buller’s book is one of many rare volumes usually preserved in the rare book room behind the scenes at Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s Library. It is currently on display in the public reading room.

Editorial (Continued from 5) Can you give an example of what some of those tough decisions are?

Yeah, here we are in Goleta right now and prior to me becoming supervisor, a decision was made that the area of the Eastern Goleta Valley would receive 75% of all the new housing coming from the state mandate. That’s a ton of impact. We need the housing for sure, but 75% of it going to one area of our county is not fair. So I ended up voting against the plan because I didn’t think that the concentration was fair, but I tried to make it better and we did make it a lot better, even though I ended up voting against the architect of the plan, I pushed and we were able to get over 50% of those homes to be affordable or for moderate income people making under $120,000. So that’s a great example because we’re in Goleta, the home of lemons, and we were trying to take lemons and turn it into lemonade. And that’s a huge multi-generational decision that I had to make very new into my term. Again, the die was cast prior to me getting here that my allotment as district two supervisor, I literally was given a number, oh, you’re going to get 4,653 units. What are you going to do with them? City Council of Goleta was not happy. That was a big one. But there’s small issues all the time of just: here’s a bad set of circumstances and how do you as a leader try to make the best scenario? And it doesn’t always translate well to the page or to a soundbite or to when you’re in the supermarket and someone stops you and says, what do you think about X, Y, Z? But as much as it’s hard, I really enjoy trying to figure out that best solution.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but ultimately we’ve got a long way to go. We need more affordable housing here. It’s too expensive to live here. I think that’s our number one challenge.”

It seems like one of the challenges of being an elected official is that you are so deep in the weeds on the details and sometimes you’re going to vote against something that you believe is a bad bill even if in the big picture you agree with the spirit of the bill. So, you end up looking like you’re voting against more housing when in fact you just want a fairer distribution.

Exactly. And what I did was just push the developers up here; and we’re focused a lot right now on downtown Santa Barbara and they’re pushing to get 10% affordable housing. We are getting out of these projects that I’m talking about, in some cases 35% affordable, because I just kept saying no. And my no vote in a sense helped up the ante on these developers. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but ultimately we’ve got a long way to go. We need more affordable housing here. It’s too expensive to live here. I think that’s our number one challenge.”

Looking back on the last four years, what stands out to you as the high point, the things you’re the proudest of, and on the other hand, the low point.

Well, the way these elections work, it’s been just three years. And I am proud of how much we’ve been able to do, me and my office, in a short period of time. I made a list of things I ran on, and we’ve done them all. And I attribute that to our office, to my sense of how to accomplish things. I attribute it to the job. Being a county supervisor working on the local level is awesome because you have immediate impact. You get to see the fruits of your labor. And I also attribute it to the community. The community is receptive. I think to be a local leader in 2025 is a blessing.

It’s something I take very seriously. I am so grateful. I find it cathartic to watch the headlines – to not get to see the dysfunction in Washington – and to be able to translate my angst, translate my complete despair and frustration into local action, and be able to do something about it.

I mean, here we are in a park that has been transformed. People are doing yoga and exercising and sitting with a guitar and swimming and you’ve got the university in the midst. We have such an amazing community of people who really care. And sure, we have a lot of problems in Santa Barbara County – poverty, affordability, all the things. But we also have so many solutions and people that are willing to do it.

And as a supervisor, I get to be the vessel of a lot of those solutions. I get to amplify them. I get to add some firepower to those solutions on a daily basis. And I don’t think in Washington you get to do that.

You said you’ve done everything on your preliminary list. What was on that list?

Well, first, I mean one of the top things was to make government or county government more responsive. And one of the issues that I ran on eight years ago

was a broken cannabis ordinance that people were really upset about, justifiably; neighbors were not being heard. They were suffering from odor issues, particularly in Carpinteria. And that was one of the first things that I was able to do this year as board chair. That was high on my list. That doesn’t encompass everything, but I put it in the bucket of a responsive government because I think that, especially on the local level, when people are trying year after year after year – and I’m talking seven years of trying to get answers – trying to get responsiveness and that’s not working, that’s not right. And so we were able to right that wrong, especially with Roy Lee coming in.

Another thing was more affordable housing, even though I don’t think we’re feeling it yet, there is a solution. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Again, Santa Barbara’s always going to be a hard place to afford to live, just given the immense beauty of where we are. So I’m not saying we’re going to fix it a hundred percent, but it hasn’t been addressed for a generation and it is being addressed. It’s not just rhetoric, it’s the actual reality of affordable housing being built that I’m really proud of. One example is that I’ve taken a very innovative solution that I learned elsewhere – which I try to do all the time, borrow great ideas – in this case taking underutilized government land, because the government owns a lot of land, and turning that into affordable housing. And we’re doing it to the tune of an RFPA proposal already going out for 80 units in downtown Santa Barbara on Carrillo Street between Anacapa and Santa Barbara streets, that 80 families or single people could live in, work in, in probably three years.

That kind of speed doesn’t happen on other levels of government, to have an idea that I heard about two years ago in a conference and to act on this quickly and to have a board that works well together to have a community of advocates, of housing advocates that are receptive to move. So I’m really excited about taking government land and turning it into affordable housing.

Then there’s climate change. Again, very daunting. What’s happening on the federal level is so depressing. It’s hard to even think about, but we took a historic vote, Supervisor Hartmann and I really led the charge for this. Thanks again to advocates like the Sierra Club, Katie Davis, Leah Stokes... We banned onshore oil and gas operations and we’re phasing out existing ones. I wouldn’t have thought we could even do that a year ago, but we did thanks to the state legislature giving counties more jurisdiction to make choices like that. That wasn’t even on my list. I didn’t even know it was possible.

We’re also making the county buildings more sustainable. That was something I did as a school board member that was on my list because the county, our buildings were not as innovative when it comes to efficiency; but now we just doubled our solar, which will save $40 million [over a 20 year period] of taxpayer money. And I pushed for that. We had some internal hiccups, and we pushed through those. So that was on my list.

It means that we deliberate… Even on the most contentious issues, even dealing with something like oil, which is so cultural in our county, or immigration, or ICE raids. Are there any obstacles you’ve encountered that you didn’t expect?

Sure. Always. I mean, there’s always staff. Just bureaucratic challenges, always. I love working with government, people who choose government service. I have such respect for, but there’s always going to be bureaucratic challenges, but yet I still would prefer to work with people who’ve decided to spend their lives serving their community even on my most frustrated day. But yeah, absolutely. And this is my full-time job, which is great. I mean, school board was volunteer basically. And so to be able to do this all day long is wonderful, just to have more velocity, more time, more bandwidth. But that also means that there tends to be some more roadblocks that I run into on a regular basis.

You’ve chaired the board for your oneyear rotation. From your helicopter perspective, what’s your observation about this board versus other boards that you’ve witnessed, even from the outside?

I love this board. I will hold it up against any, I mean, we get along really well and that’s great for us. But what does that mean for the public?

It means that we deliberate. There’s a moment up there often in our board hearings where the chemistry changes and we sort of sit back a little bit and we do what bodies of government are supposed to do, which is deliberate.

And sometimes that results in a change of vote. It always results in a change of perspective, which is what we should be doing, which is what we are elected to do. We’re not all the same. We’re not monolithic. If we were, it would be very boring and it wouldn’t be productive, and government would not be what I think our founders enviLaura with 3rd District County Supervisor Joan sioned. We come from very different Hartmann and 1st District County Supervisor backgrounds. We come from different Roy Lee ideologies. We come from different geographies of the county. Orcutt is different than Summerland. Hope Ranch is different than Guadalupe. There’s big differences in the county and I really enjoy learning from my colleagues and thinking in a different way and learning from their experience. And that’s sincere and I’m just grateful. Especially now, you look across the country and you can’t say that about local government right now. I mean, you could just do a YouTube search where security guards are having to be hired, things being thrown. And it’s a hard time in our electorate. People are taking out their anger at their government officials and I just am grateful that that’s not happening in our boardroom. And it’s also not happening amongst the people that come to our supervisor meetings. They’re very respectful. Even on the most contentious issues, even dealing with something like oil, which is so cultural in our county, or immigration, or ICE raids. That has been tough in our board hearing room, and yet we’ve maintained a level of civility. As board chair I’ve been honored to try to manage those hearings and set a tone of respect. Even when during a Sable [Oil] hearing, we had a record number of public comments, 168, very passionate. This took seven hours.

I let everybody speak for the full three minutes, and by and large, it was a model of what our democracy should be.

This is a complicated moment for constituents, not just here but across the country.

What would you like to communicate that you’d like for people to be thinking about at this moment?

Just to not give up, and that our local level is a place that we still can come together, and all of the potential is right here on the ground in Santa Barbara County. And to just channel some of that despair that we’re all feeling, we’re exhausted, but to keep going. We are going to get through this dark time in our history and there’s places to go with that feeling and so many amazing organizations, nonprofits that are just desperate for that energy, to try to channel that. And from my vantage point, reach out to your elected official if you’re not sure what to do, because we can tell you where to channel that because there’s so much to do between now and frankly, the

end of this administration’s term.

Local News (Continued from 10 10)) approve a package of permits that will formally allow the Bellosguardo Foundation to host tours and special events at the historic Clark Estate – a decision years in the making and one that commissioners said will finally bring clarity, oversight, and expanded public access to one of the city’s most enigmatic landmarks.

The Commission’s action came after the estate’s long-pending application appeared as the primary new item on the December 11 agenda, which outlined the required approvals: a Coastal Development Permit, Conditional Use Permit, Interior Setback Modification, and a CEQA exemption for use of the existing facilities.

Commissioners expressed strong support for opening Bellosguardo more fully to the community but paired their approval with new conditions addressing affordability, public benefit, and long-term planning. Among the most significant requirements is that the Foundation must participate in Museums for All or an equivalent reduced-price access program within two years – an effort commissioners said is essential to ensuring that local families, students, and lower-income residents can experience the property.

Commissioners also required the Foundation to submit an application within four years for a permanent restroom building and an ADA-accessible ramp. Parking logistics were another focus, with the Commission mandating continued use of off-site parking and shuttles for large events, along with advance notification to both the City and the neighboring Santa Barbara Cemetery.

Though supportive, Commissioner Lucille Boss cast the lone dissenting vote, citing concerns about affordable access and the precedent set by allowing years of tours prior to permit approval. Still, the majority emphasized that approving the long-awaited permits marks an important step in fulfilling Huguette Clark’s wish

that Bellosguardo serve as a cultural asset for Santa Barbara.

connection. The hosts intentionally design the evening to encourage guests to move beyond familiar circles, sparking conversations between people who may not otherwise cross paths. The result is an atmosphere where introductions feel natural, conversations flow easily, and new friendships take shape.

At evening’s close, the guest book filled with notes that all seemed to echo the same feeling. Guests loved the dress up sparkle of it all, calling it “a rare chance to truly celebrate and show up with intention.” Others praised the mix of people, describing the party as “elegant, warm, and full of people you genuinely want to talk to,” with conversations that flowed easily all night. More than a few shared the best compliment of all: they left having made new friends, the kind of connection that makes an evening linger

long after the last glass is poured.

Reflecting on the evening, Jamie Knee shared that the greatest compliment is hearing guests call it their favorite party of the year. With no expectation beyond simply enjoying the night, the party feels open, welcoming, and easy, the kind of gathering where people relax, connect, and leave with new friends.

By night’s end, it was clear the celebration had become more than a holiday soirée. It mirrors what makes Montecito so special: a community that is gracious, bright, stylish, and genuinely warm, where conversation matters, and gatherings still feel like true moments of belonging. In that spirit, the Montecito Holiday Sparkle Party continues to shine as a celebration of friendship, generosity, and the joy of coming together in the

most wonderful season of the year.

“I went to New York a decent amount growing up. I have family there and friends. Then I lived there for seven and a half years. Obviously living there was a different experience.” He did find his heart there. “My wife is South African, and I am Californian, and we both met in New York, in Brooklyn.”

Rabbi Loschak is a guy with an amused, lopsided grin and an easy manner. He’s wearing the familiar yarmulke, white dress shirt, and wire frame glasses (I wear the same ones).

I mention this because in my possibly pitiable imagination a rabbi is approximately as decipherable as an Apollo-era astronaut – someone whose deep training, intellectual rigor, and journeys to places beyond my comprehension invite my polite staring.

In any case, I’ve never spoken to a rabbi before, and the idea intimidates me a little. The very word “Rabbi” suggests antediluvian wisdom, a walking, bearded repository of eternal laws and codes.

Within about 20 seconds Rabbi Loschak has put me at my ease. He could be a pal from down the block.

At one point I comment on the densely packed, scholarly-looking volumes on the shelving behind him. He turns his head to briefly survey them and turns back to me with a mild grin.

“We’re called people of the book for a reason, right?”

He continues with the story of his visit to Montecito some four years ago, a visit whose findings would determine his and Mushkie’s next steps. He visited with many people on that visit.

“Some of them were older and it seemed they were mostly alone,” Rabbi Loschak says with feeling. “I remember I visited someone and the smile on his face seeing me! He was in his nineties. Now he’s 94.

And this smile on his face of seeing someone who just cared for him as a person, it was incredible, it was incredible. That feeling of seeing that.” I see the Rabbi reliving the feeling before me and it’s terrific.

My personal intention in this piece is to write a broad profile of Rabbi Chaim Loschak, and out of my personal curiosity to learn what I can about Rabbinical training and life. There is nothing foreordained about becoming a rabbi. It is aspirational, deeply personal, and arduous. “Some of our greatest rabbis in our history were converts. My father became a rabbi. He wasn’t even born religious.

He was Jewish, but he was not born religious at all and he became a rabbi.”

He explains the various “specializations” in the Rabbinical space, the places he’s studied (Los Angeles, France, Israel), the attraction of orthodox Jewry to the hub of Brooklyn, the NYC borough from which he and Mushkie returned to the central coast, to Montecito.

“I moved here for this specific purpose, to open this Chabad here to help Jews connect with each other,” he says.

“To discover more about their heritage and celebrate Judaism in a positive way.”

Our conversation today is under an unacknowledged shadow, a cloud occluding the sun. A tragic attack in Australia has taken 15 lives, one of them, his friend named Eli. “The response to that has to be to dig deeper,” Rabbi Loschak says. “If you’re familiar at all with the Old Testament, Aaron has two sons who died. They went into the holy of Holies with incense and they died by a fire. Aaron was the high priest. And the verse says Aaron was quiet. And so sometimes I don’t have the words to say, I’m just going to be quiet.

But if we don’t engage more in who we are, we’re basically fulfilling their wishes, the hater’s wishes. We have to honor the legacy of the people who were killed. That’s my

immediate thoughts on the matter.”

they also represent the celestial beings that bring light, an essential part of the story that, like most Christmas Revels productions, features an allegory about descending into darkness and re-emerging into the light, representing the winter solstice. The trio is also starring in the Mummers play that is included with every Christmas Revels production.

This year, that play also reflects the seasonal theme that centers around coming back to life, Mixsell said.

“It’s about moving from winter into spring rebirth, bringing back the light, and hope, and joy. It’s about righting the world and reestablishing the light.”

Longtime fans of Revels will be happy to hear that all of the traditional elements are part of this year’s performances. These include a bevy of singalongs that start early in the show as everyone in invited to join with the chorus for “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and the first act’s familiar conclusion with “The Lord of the Dance.” At that, the audience is invited to join the cast both in singing and dancing through the aisles and out onto the Lobero Promenade.

The Pacific Sword Company is back to perform the intricate Sword Dance, and the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance is also part of the show.

There are also new elements, of course, including a challenging English country dance called “Step Stately Dance” that blends graceful movement with intricate figures, plus tales from cultures Eastern and European, including songs in Basque and a humorous parable about perspective based on a popular Jewish folktale known as “It Could Always Be Worse.”

“There are a lot of songs after the light is restored in the second half of the show,” Mixsell said. “A lot of uplifting and rousing numbers.”

The Celestial Fools – A Magical Winter’s Tale also has one of the largest casts in local Revels history, totaling more than 100, including the singers, musicians (including a brass band), actors, youth members, and dancers, many of whom perform more than one role.

As it turns out, several of them have been part of the company for years, including several who date back to the last time Mixsell served as director, she said.

“It’s been great working side by side with Susan again,” she said, adding that the stage manager, producer and Keller’s administrative assistant are among her former students. “It’s been a little bit like old home week. It’s all very comfortable and lovely.”

Which is exactly what Revels is all about.

What the MEC? Downtown’s Musical Jewel Box When Michael Holliday, Lawrence Scarpa, and Angela Brooks were juggling their T-squares, balsa wood, and glue guns at the University of Florida in Gainesville (go Gators), they likely didn’t foresee the momentous project on which they would be collaborating in far-flung 2025.

Even as these architects-in-training made final preparations to enter the profession, some 2,500 miles away the Music Academy of the West (MAW) basked in verdant beachside splendor, awaiting the moment when, in the fullness of time (as they say), the three professionally mature pals would reconvene to usher the beloved MAW to its next epochal iteration – a vanguard performance and education center smack in the middle of Santa Barbara’s downtown.

MAW’s summer classical music training program – launched in 1947 – has long since hit its renowned stride, welcoming into its floral, gated hideaway both young master musicians from across the seven seas, and a public eager to partake of the gorgeous musical art they perform. Nearing its 80th birthday, the Academy’s leadership sought to effect a more frankly public-facing posture.

As MAW CEO Shauna Quill nicely summarized: “We have this vision to get

beyond those gates.” To be clear, the Music Academy gates had always been flung wide in welcome; but the very presence of a gate can conjure an added barrier to entry for those already hesitant to approach the (mis)perceived citadel of classical music.

In 2025 a property in downtown Santa Barbra was acquired. Enter three gifted Gators.

“This will be a world-class design effort led by my good friends and former college classmates Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, and Angie Brooks, FAIA,” says Michael Holliday. “This is a full-circle moment.” At 901 State Street, Santa Barbara’s DMHA Architecture + Interior Design and Los Angeles’ Brooks, Scarpa, Huber Architects are preparing to hunker down over a midtown music box in which will inhere a wildly engineered sonic chamber – and the promise of a bustlingly reanimated downtown. Let’s talk briefly about the project in the rhapsodic argot of high-flying architecture.

Here goes.

At the core of the building, a dramatic architectural intervention opens portions of the second-floor slab and roof, creating a soaring vertical atrium. The effect is luminous and uplifting – a contemporary counterpoint to the building’s traditional exterior.

Within this space sits The Jewel: a sculptural, curving architectural form that becomes the spiritual and acoustic heart of the Center. Inspired by the fluidity of musical expression, the Jewel integrates performance, rehearsal, and technical systems into a seamless environment; vanguard acoustic technology and an aesthetically mesmerizing milieu combining to reframe Santa Barbara’s downtown, and music appreciation itself.

street at the Arlington just last weekend, courtesy of Festival Ballet’s 50th presentation? Why, yes. The fact that two professional companies can stage massive productions of the Christmas Eve story – Clara and her toy nutcracker prince come to life in the land of the sweets – at the city’s two largest indoor venues over successive weekends? This is just more evidence of the astounding avalanche of arts to which a community of our size has no real right to be accustomed. Not only that, but State Street’s show, despite its long history, has proven so popular that the company added a fourth show for the first time for its December 19-21 run.

Once again, Brian Asher Alhadeff will conduct the Opera San Luis Obispo Orchestra in the tuneful score to accompany the huge cast that includes 20 international professional company members, 20 pre-professional trainees at SSB’s school, and more than 100 local students to bring the holiday magic back to the Granada.

As part of a rotating slate of dancers, the Nutcracker Prince will be performed by professional company members Noam Tsivkin and Ethan Ahuero, while four dancers are cast in the role of Clara this year, including company members Brenna Chumacero and Akari Kato and State Street Academy students Sloan Brookshire and Amanda Kabaretti. (The latter is the daughter of Santa Barbara Symphony Music & Artistic Director Nir Kabaretti and Santa Barbara Opera Chorus member Gaja Hubbard Kabaretti.) Two paired performers dance the Sugar Plum pas de deux: Kato with Harold Mendez, and real-life couple Saori Yamashita and Ryan Lenkey, who became very publicly engaged when Lenkey proposed following their matinee performance as the title roles of SSB’s premiere of its original Romeo and Juliet earlier this season.

As always, State Street’s Nutcracker features dazzling costumes, sets and scenery, with classic choreography largely created decades ago by founder Rodney Gustafson.

The festive holiday decorations feature more than 50,000 lights every night after sunset through the end of the year in a free, family-friendly experience located on the main lawn and environs on the Hillside property. The display illuminates a variety of trees and decorative installations, including several teams of reindeer, a few Santa Clauses, two sleighs including one you can walk inside of, and other wintertime favorites – even a decorated cactus. Sock Skating at MOXI – The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation first socked it to us in 2023 when the family-oriented museum turned a big part of its rooftop into a makeshift skating rink that needs no ice.

Kids of all ages kick off their shoes and frolic with largely frictionless fun on a specialty tile floor that has some of the same properties as ice, sans the sub-zero (Celsius) temperatures. It’s no surprise that the seasonal exhibit is back for a third year of demonstrating true scientific properties disguised by the spirit of the season as wintry fun. To that end, skaters are invited to experiment with their footwear to determine which material slides the best between cotton, wool or synthetic materials, or even big fluffy slippers. While the exhibit eliminates the possibility of frostbite and gashes from an errant ice skate blade, and the ambiance might fall short of Rockefeller Center’s famous NYC rink, gliding along while glancing at the ocean, mountains, and downtown buildings sure beats the inside of an arena.
