ictorian women were expected to be demure, decorous, and to generally avoid spending their evenings in the company of bloodthirsty Transylvanian counts.

Thankfully, times have changed.

On September 19, some of Santa Barbara’s most formidable women will descend upon the Music Academy of the West for State Street Ballet’s annual gala, Victorian Vogue. There will be fashion. There will be fortunes. There will be dancing beneath the waxing moon. And somewhere among all that dark opulence, Dracula will be waiting in the wings.

Not literally, one hopes.

The evening takes its inspiration from Dracula, a dark shadow, State Street Ballet’s newly commissioned season opener, transforming Bram Stoker’s world of Victorian intrigue into something considerably more glamorous – and with a much better guest list.

The Women Behind the Vogue If Victorian society had rather specific ideas about what women should and should not do, the committee behind Victorian Vogue seems happily determined to ignore most of them.

Gala Chairs Dr. Nicole Callahan and (the) Alex Nourse are joined by a rather remarkable cross-section of Santa Barbara women: entrepreneurs, philanthropists, arts leaders, a former professional ballerina, an attorney, a journalist, a winery owner, and members of State Street Ballet’s own leadership. Also know as: Melody Ellison, Jenna Jobst Reichental, Ashley Flood, Jean Rogers, Janey K. Campbell, Fenna Roukema, Toby Donner, Elizabeth Chandler, and Honorary Committee Member Melanie Trent De Schutter. It is less a committee than a reminder of how many different talents it takes to keep an arts organization dancing.

The evening also marks a changing of the guard. State Street Ballet will honor Roger Thompson, its longtime board member and former board president, while welcoming Callahan into her new role as Board President. Executive Director Cecily MacDougall credits Thompson with guiding the company through numerous periods of growth, while Callahan – a former dancer herself – brings both a deep affection for the art form and an outside perspective shaped by years spent in New York’s dance community.

It is an appropriate moment to celebrate the people behind the curtain because State Street Ballet currently has quite a lot happening in front of it.

The gala begins with an excerpt from George Balanchine’s ethereal Serenade, featuring 18 women onstage and performed in memory of the late Arlyn Goldsby, a longtime supporter and board member who had a particular love for the company’s dancers. From there, guests get their first taste of Dracula, a dark shadow, with choreographer Nicolas Blanc in attendance, before the program jumps forward stylistically to Kassandra Taylor Newberry’s FOLD – a contemporary work inspired by a high-stakes poker game.

Beings and Doings Hale and Richard: The Spark of the Covenant

I

’ve been invited to rock ‘n’ roll’s inner sanctum by its madcap custodians; they who will usher me into the catacombs from whose torchlit stores they assemble their annual tent revival at the Lobero theatre. They’ve put together a particularly wig-flipping rock show for José Lobero’s venerable 150-year-old opera house, the curtain rising on their newest and trippiest on August 29th.

Hale Milgrim and Richard Salzberg are so frankly thrilled with what they’re about to unveil they’ve invited a prize-festooned music journalist into their secretive hideaway to get a taste.

That didn’t work out for them and they had to settle. I assure you, I am up to the… I’m up… aw hell, what’s –TASK! I am up to the task.

I’m conflicted, though, about gazing into the Vault of Boundless Rock ‘n’ Roll Wisdom, my face bathed in the unearthly light of transcendence. Am I

worthy? Will my awestruck expression morph to one of piercing horror as I hideously melt in time-lapse? I saw that in a movie once and it was not cool.

Fingers crossed.

“Jeff, come on in!”

The former President and CEO of Capitol Records grinningly gestures me into the house with a mild game show flourish. Hale Milgrim is onetime steward of the iconic record label synonymous with generation-spanning American popular music, the legendary cultural juggernaut whose offices at 1750 North Vine in Hollywood famously mimic a stack of records 150’ tall.

Milgrim’s Partner in 4/4 Time, Richard Salzberg is an all-encompassing rock ‘n’’ roll resource, an archivist, walking library, and rock proselytizer. Salzberg extends a hand in greeting, smiling through his power moustache.

Milgrim cuts a slightly more diaphanous figure. I notice immediately his facial expression is continually alight, eyebrows arched in seeming perpetual

pneumatic tube of the kind banks use to shuttle paperwork around the building.

“What Richard didn’t tell you,” Milgrim murmurs in a confidential tone, “is they have to shrink you down, put you in a little package and send you on up!” He reconnoiters. “What was that movie with the shrinking submarine?”

wonder even as he stands in the middle of a familiar room. Milgrim’s deportment is buoyant and he wears an amused, unfaltering grin; a human-scale character balloon cut loose from the parade, a genie.

We say our hellos and they start riffing as they talk to me. The tour will begin upstairs, and Milgrim cracks wise. “Why don’t we just take the escalator?” Richard starts in about a neighbor’s elevator, a

Island Impressions

“W

e used to tell the joke about our island – we save money on fencing.”

For Dr. Tim Vail, the punchline was obvious: his family’s cattle ranch had the Pacific Ocean for a boundary.

By 1902, Vail & Vickers owned the entire 53,000-acre Santa Rosa Island, where broad grasslands and perennial streams supported a vast cattle operation. Four generations of the family ranched there before the NPS acquired the island in 1986.

That history surfaced at the Art Foundation of Santa Barbara’s 2026 Annual Members Art Exhibition at the Santa Barbara Club, where Tim’s luminous 1920 Franz Bischoff oil painting, Santa Rosa Island, won Best of Show.

Bischoff, one of the most important figures of California Impressionism, was celebrated for his luminous California landscapes. “I never have to go very far away from home for my inspiration to paint,” Franz said. His paintings are held in esteem at The Irvine Museum for California Art, LACMA, Crocker Museum in Sacramento, Laguna Art Museum, and the Hilbert Museum of California Art. In this case, inspiration was waiting at the docks. The painting depicts the Vail family’s 87-foot schooner named Santa Rosa Island, built in 1903 expressly to transport livestock for the island ranch. In 1915, three of Walter Vail’s sons took the schooner on a four-month voyage to Baja.

“For us, the painting is a family treasure,” Vail said. “It’s very emotional for me. As a boy, I worked the cattle on the ranch, up until I was 28. If it was up to me, I would still be working on the ranch. I loved working the cows, training the horses, I still miss it. When it was sold, I went back to school and became a vet. But I’d rather still be out there, ranching on the island.”

The family bred and trained its own horses on the island as part of its stocker operation, and Tim grew up hearing his father Russ Vail’s stories about his uncles taking a little “boat trip” down to Baja. “Little did I know it was this very schooner!”

When the Bischoff came up for auction at Moran’s in Pasadena in 2024, Vail and his wife drove down to see it.

“The bidding went high and over my price. I almost didn’t get it, but my wife stepped in and bid as well, so we own it together.”

In person, the painting was breathtaking – one of the most beautiful Bischoff paintings we’ve seen.

For two weeks each summer, Santa Barbara Club members transform the Club into a gallery of works from their private collections. Jeremy Tessmer took on the formidable task of hanging the entire exhibition and, with Diane Waterhouse, judging its awards. Tessmer lightened the responsibility by introducing himself as the show’s “anointed sacrificial lamb,” joking that all complaints could be directed to Diane.

Then came two artists whose lives have been adventures in themselves.

Collage artist and author Mary Heebner, a UCSB MFA graduate mentored by William Dole, has created and self-published 22 artist books in handmade paper, painting, and writing. Recalling the moment Macduff Everton walked into her studio, she told him, “I want to see that color blue in person. Take me there.”

Macduff ’s photography began earlier. As a Santa Barbara surfer teen, he announced plans to spend three months surfing in France. His mother’s response?

“No Scottish son of mine is going to spend that much money for just three months. Best spend at least a year.” He did – eventually going around the world, picking up a camera, and launching an award-winning life-long professional career photographing extraordinary moments of light and place.

Cortex and Canvas Stewart Fine Art will host The Cortex and the Canvas on Sunday, August 23, bringing neuroaesthetics and Indian philosophy together for an intimate exploration of how sustained attention to art can influence the brain, nervous system, and decision-making. Steering a Better Board

R

ecently, I attended the best SBUSD meeting I have witnessed in my 28 years of following local school board issues.

The facilitator, Dr. Suzette Lovely, presented a creative and thought-provoking workshop on “Governance.” Two slides set the tone for the day: 1. Definition of the Greek root of the word governance (“to steer”); and 2. A ship, with steering wheel (board) and oars (administration).

Dr. Lovely led four hours of exercises and questions, structured dialog, and self-examination to, simply put, help the board in steering, and the Superintendent and administration in rowing, the ship. What resulted was refreshingly open and honest dialog between board and administration in understanding their distinct roles and in identifying “Situations that Need Attention.”

A key frustration expressed by board members was their desire to be able to come to board meetings better informed and prepared to deliberate. Two constructive “next steps” discussed were: 1. Organize perhaps four special meetings (community meetings) annually which focus on a single subject. 2. Provide in-depth staff reports on these specific topics.

I would like to thank SBUSD Superintendent Maldonado for choosing Dr. Lovely to lead this remarkable meeting.

Caravans of Socialists Doggone it! I had spent so many blissful months out of the shadow of conservative partisanship expressed by “An Independent Mind” columnist, Jeffrey Harding.

Then, this week, I hesitated. I peeked. And I was sucked into the abyss of the 1950s red scare, rampant communism, and right wing BS. Last time I read one of his columns it was “It’s Kamala” from 7/30/24. Then he made such statements as: “… she took advantage of her gender and race to boost herself into political prominence.” Yeah, sexism and racism rolled into one. Very economical journalism right there.

He continued: “[Her] spending will increase the federal deficit and cause higher interest rates, more inflation, and a weaker dollar.” Mphf!

In 4/22/25, Harding opined that … “[Trump] is doing what he said he was going to do.” And then, “Employment is almost at an historic high. Inflation is coming down. GDP is rising.” Ahhahahahaha! How’s that workin’ for ya now, Mr. Prediction Pundit??

So last week it was all about the S-word: socialism! Mr. Harding starts by asserting that anyone who disagrees with him is “wrong” and that the results of those ignorant, lazy souls’ thinking has been “disastrous.” Okay, not what I would call reading the room, but go on.

He jumps to the term “democratic socialism,” which largely means to transition away from capitalism. This is vastly different than what “social democrats” favor: “Focus on managing and improving the existing liberal democratic and capitalist framework. Prioritize universal public services like healthcare, free higher education, and extensive worker protections.” These are things Mr. Harding, again telegraphing his conservative bias, calls “free stuff.” I would call them “well-deserved protections and rights.”

Harding also goes on and on about the Democratic Socialists of America, which is NOT a political party. No Democratic candidate has espoused anything near the DSA’s vision of a post-capitalist utopia. This is more right wing BS (see above) – nothing but a 1950s McCarthyism scare tactic that failed then – after ruining countless innocent lives – and will fail now. I suppose “caravans of socialists” will be a future column headline in the Journal.

I again urge the editors of the MJ to change the headline “An Independent Mind” from Mr. Harding’s columns and label them as they are: opinions. Were he actually interested in educating his readers and broadening their world and historic perspective, he would have sleuthed out some pros and cons of BOTH side of the discussion – not just pander to one and demonize the other.

Mr. Harding is, as Mr. Harding implies, well-rounded in knowledge of history, economics, and philosophy. He must realize that when he concludes his column with “I challenge you to learn and think,” he makes a hilariously self-owning admission of being the intellectual snob he swears he’s not. Call this column an opinion column

or label it accurately: “Rhetorical Rants of Right Wing BS”.

And kudos to Jeff Wing for last week’s “Beings and Doings” article on the same topic.

The event, formally titled Hachnasat Sefer Torah, was held at the home of one of the family members of Chabad of Montecito.

The new Torah was dedicated to Chabad of Montecito. Prior to welcoming the generous gift from the Ruimy Family, Rabbi Chaim had borrowed a Torah for services.

I asked Rabbi Chaim for Mr. Ruimy’s thoughts on his kind donation. Mr. Ruimy provided: “Welcoming a new Sefer Torah is a deeply meaningful and joyful celebration. My family is truly honored to dedicate this Sefer Torah to the new Chabad Montecito Community Center and to contribute to the growth of this wonderful community. We hope it will serve as a source of learning, inspiration and celebration, bringing people together and enriching Jewish life in Montecito for generations to come.”

SEL out for self-growth at SBCC

new class offering for fall. “More Alive” is based on the idea that all psychotherapies and personal growth activities that are shown to increase happiness and well-being fundamentally address our feeling of aliveness. People engage in continual striving for physical health, as well as for mental, emotional, and spiritual enrichment. The class will focus on those activities that give the promise of enhanced aliveness in each of these areas, not only exploring the latest developments and understandings concerning personal and societal health but putting into practice those that can best serve us individually and collectively. Abundant curiosity and the desire to experience greater aliveness is the key for the interactive class on Friday mornings.

Meanwhile, Dana Drobny continues to teach “How Meditation Helps Mindfulness in Everyday Life,” diving into the practice that can help students greet the challenges and joys of daily life and aging with greater courage, acceptance, and clarity. Participants will practice a range of meditation techniques that encourage health and well-being, learning how to focus their attention in the present moment, bring awareness to habitual patterns that no longer serve them, and allow their breath to strengthen their body and calm their mind. Beginners and experienced meditators alike are welcome at the online class of Fridays.

Michelle Checketts (who just happens to be married to the most success baseball coach in UCSB’s history) once again will lead the class “Body-Mind Medicine: Brain Longevity,” which teaches how the body-mind complex can maintain healthy balance or be responsible for disease. Topics include the psychosomatics of everyday life, including the relationship between stressors, regulatory peptides (hormones, prostaglandins, and neurotransmitters) and how it relates to older adults. Medical evidence has found various means of restoring emotional balance, including psychotherapy, herbs, nutrition, yoga, homeopathy, and prayer.

Also under the aegis of SBCC’s SEL is a one-day wellness event with longtime Santa Barbara shaman David Cumes, who will talk about “The Transformational Power of Grief ” on October 3. Meanwhile, new this year is that all SBCC students, now including SEL, qualify for free mental health counseling at SBCC, with access in person or via Zoom, with a focus on self-care, self-discovery and personal growth.

anta Barbara City College’s School of Extended Learning – the latest name for the ever-changing but still beloved programming once known as Adult Ed – continues to offer literally hundreds of classes across a wide spectrum of fields, almost all of them at the ridiculously low price of absolutely free.

But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a case of you get what you pay for: SEL’s instructors are nearly uniformly accomplished in their areas, often fully professional or otherwise experts, perhaps retired, or simply enamored with working with members of the community.

While the massively popular and deeply probing Mind & Supermind events are no longer with us, the Psychology/ Self-Management and Wellness courses still dive into important areas for self-growth. The fall semester launches on August 24. Here’s a few highlights appropriate for this column, but do yourself a favor and check out the whole catalog.

Longtime AE/SEL teacher Rodger Sorrow returns with his two popular classes, including Compassionate Communications, which employs the skills of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) to help participants learn to ask for what they want without fear or guilt by speaking from the heart to address feelings and needs without blame. The process helps to deepen connections with others, including enhancing long-term relationships and healing painful ones.

The only drawback is it’s online only.

Meeting in person are Sorrow’s Nature and Self-Healing classes, which pair hiking in area parks, beaches and trails with self-discovery and self-healing techniques along with nutrition and stress management techniques. The sessions take place during a break in the hike, with both beginning (Thursdays) and intermediate (Tuesdays) sections available.

Incidentally, Sorrow’s daughter Michelle Sorro will be leading a Sacred Space Stewardship retreat this fall online and live in Santa Barbara for women to be immersed in retreat leadership, preparing to design, lead, and sustain transformational experiences with the stewardship, capacity and integrity the work requires. A live online preview of the 12-week program, not affiliated with SBCC, is slated for August 25.

ory Pesaturo remains the youngest person to win the National Accordion Championships almost 25 years after he achieved the feat in 2002. He’s the only one to ever claim the Triple Crown of World Championships, notching victories on Acoustic, Digital, and Jazz Accordion. Pesaturo was the first musician ever to major and graduate in the accordion at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He’s delivered two popular TED Talks, played at the White House for Bill and Hillary Clinton as a pre-teen, and a dozen other times for the couple both in D.C. and beyond.

His TV appearances include the Late Show with David Letterman (with Johnny Depp), he gives master classes on both music theory and the accordion at various universities throughout the U.S. and Europe, and performs around the world in a variety of musical settings, from Italian music festivals to Klezmer folk songs, Bulgarian traditionals, and classical music, including performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Pesaturo, a huge Formula 1 racing fan, once played the accordion in a race car driven at 180 mph by Mario Andretti at the Indianapolis Speedway, where he tore through Rossini’s “William Tell Overture.” And we haven’t even mentioned his main musical love; jazz.

But chances are that you’ve never heard of him. Unless, of course, you’re a big fan of the accordion.

“The accordion is not cool,” Pesaturo explained over the phone amid roaring engines at the Monterey Car Week recently. “It’s been seen as second class ever since after the Lawrence Welk days when Art Van Damme made it very popular through the early ‘60s. Nothing’s really happened since.”

Indeed, young Cory only took up the instrument at the insistence of his father, who had himself given it up earlier.

“He quit when everybody else did – when no girl would date an accordion player,” he said. “But he took it out again when I was nine, and then ‘asked’ me to play, the way an Italian father asks, which means ‘you better.’”

Pesaturo found himself quickly getting good, a result of his competitive nature rather than any innate skill, he said.

“I love sports, but I sucked at sports. But when I started playing accordion, I was progressing much quicker than everybody else. So I treated music, as I really still do today, as a sport. Which is true. It is absolutely a competitive sport… The thing is, I didn’t love to play it. I did it because of the competition aspect. But then once I found jazz, that’s when I started saying, ‘Huh, okay, this is actually pretty sweet.’”

It’s in that jazz realm that Pesaturo will be performing in Santa Barbara in a special accordion trio night on August 20 at The Grand on State, the new upscale jazz club/ restaurant co-owned by keyboardist Brian Mann, a highly respected accordionist in his own right. They’ll be joined by Júlia Masnicová, a Slovak accordionist, singer, composer and arranger, who Pesaturo said is making her American debut, first joining him in Northern California before the sojourn south to Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

“I don’t know what the heck we’re going to play,” Pesaturo said. “But Brian and I can pretty much play anything, so we’ll figure it out. And with Julia, I think we’ll all do stuff individually and as duos and a trio, so people can see how we do things differently. I’m sure there are some tunes that we can all do together. Professor Robert Haring-Kaye leads students in a physics lesson

Teens Inspired at Science by the Sea Camp

H

igh school students from across the country converged on Westmont this summer to measure the speed of light, characterize electroplated copper through an electron microscope, and contemplate how faith, philosophy and history shape scientific discovery.

The inaugural Science by the Sea camp welcomed 12 rising high school juniors and seniors, including six outof-state students and one incoming Westmont freshman. The weeklong residential camp provided high schoolers with immersive college-level research experiences; a rare opportunity for students prior to undergraduate study.

“From our perspective, this camp was designed specifically for students with a strong desire to explore the physical sciences: physics, chemistry and mathematics,” said Ben Carlson, assistant professor of physics. “Since Westmont is a liberal arts college, we also designed the activities to engage more broadly with the question of how specific disciplines including

philosophy, history and theology shape science and are influenced by science.”

Throughout the week, campers engaged in hands-on laboratory experiments and attended interactive faculty-led discussions. Students conducted advanced physics and chemistry experiments, using state-of-the-art equipment to tackle complex projects.

For Carlson, witnessing the students’ enthusiasm during these hands-on lab sessions stood out as a highlight of the week.

“Personally, I enjoyed seeing the student projects,” Carlson said. “They got to do experiments that are unheard of in high school, like measure a physical constant: the speed of light. One group got to use our electron microscope to characterize copper they electroplated during a chemistry lab.”

Beyond laboratory work, faculty members introduced interdisciplinary perspectives to challenge how students view the scientific enterprise. David Vander Laan, professor of philosophy, led a session examining foundational questions in the philosophy of science.

“My role in Science by the Sea was to

get students thinking about the limits of science,” Vander Laan said. “Specifically, the students worked on an activity that raised the questions whether science is the only source of knowledge and whether science is objective.”

He noted how quickly the young scholars embraced complex philosophical inquiry. “Two things stuck with me about our session,” Vander Laan said.

Outside Hahn Hall, the theme continues. Costumes from Dracula are expected to haunt the cocktail hour, alongside opportunities for guests to have their portrait sketched or fortune read before dinner beneath the stars.

And for anyone wishing to carry a little Dracula home without the inconvenience of a coffin, there is the live auction.

Among its prizes is a Dior Book Tote featuring the first-edition cover of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The bag comes from Jonathan Anderson’s Dior “dream library” and renders Stoker’s famous cover across one of the house’s signature silhouettes.

Even Dracula, it seems, has succumbed to Dior.

Dracula Takes the Stage Fashion aside, the Count has more serious business in Santa Barbara.

On October 30 and 31, Dracula, a dark shadow opens State Street Ballet’s 2026–27 season at The Granada Theatre. It is, according to Artistic Director Megan Philipp, one of the largest productions the company has undertaken – and almost everything about it suggests an organization interested in testing the upper limits of what it can put onstage.

Nicolas Blanc, who spent 15 years with the Joffrey Ballet before turning his attention fully to choreography, is creating the new work. His libretto remains rooted in Stoker’s story while selecting and reshaping elements of the novel into his own interpretation. The original Dracula, published in 1897, is itself an unusual piece of storytelling: assembled through letters, diary entries, newspaper articles, and other documents rather than told through a single narrative voice.

For State Street Ballet’s version, Blanc is working with a team that includes scenic designer Jack Mehler and costume designer Ben-Oni Cortes. Rather than leaning into the lavish visual language that often accompanies Dracula productions, the set takes cues from the minimalism of Philip Glass’s score. Cortes’ costumes, meanwhile, draw upon the Victorian period while gently deconstructing it, layering historical references into something less expected.

Then there is the music.

Glass’s score will be performed live onstage by the Kronos Quartet (yeah, that Kronos Quartet).

For a character who has survived more than a century of reinvention – Dracula has appeared in hundreds upon hundreds of adaptations across stage, film, television and other media – finding a fresh pulse is no small assignment.

State Street Ballet is happy to try.

A Season with Teeth After Dracula retreats to wherever vampires spend the holidays, another familiar figure arrives in December.

The Nutcracker returns to the Granada December 18 through 20, but even the company’s most established tradition is getting a substantial visual refresh. The choreography has evolved over the years as State Street Ballet’s artistic team has updated sections to suit new generations of dancers. This season, however, the most visible change arrives when the curtain rises on Act II: an entirely new set.

The previous backdrop had been in service for roughly two decades. Cortes, already designing costumes for Dracula, has designed the new Nutcracker scenery as well. Before arriving home in Santa Barbara, the production will travel to Spokane, Washington, and Durango, Colorado.

Spring brings a return beneath the waves.

Alongside the public performances, State Street Ballet plans free outreach performances for local students, allowing young audiences not only to watch the production but to meet dancers, ask questions and discover the many jobs that exist behind a theatrical production. The company will also continue its sensory-friendly programming, creating a more inclusive theater environment for families with special needs and young children.

There is growth happening between the mainstage productions, too. State Street Ballet is launching the Choreographic Institute of Santa Barbara, spearheaded by Artistic Associate Nilas Martins, creating a place for choreographers to develop new work on the company’s dancers. The ambition, Philipp explained, is for Santa

Barbara to become known not simply as a place where dance is performed and taught, but as a hub where new dance is actually made.

The season concludes May 22 and 23 with another collaboration with the Santa Barbara Symphony, Brahms & Balanchine: Slaughter on Tenth Avenue. The triple bill moves from Brahms’ “Symphony No. 3” to a world premiere by Martins and Philipp set to Samuel Barber’s “String Quartet No. 1 in B Minor,” before finishing with Balanchine’s wonderfully theatrical Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.

That last work brings rivalry, murder plots, showgirls, tap dancing, speaking roles, and Broadway swagger onto the ballet stage. Sets are coming from Pacific Northwest Ballet; costumes from Miami City Ballet.

Demure and decorous, indeed.

Which brings us back to September 19.

Victorian Vogue may arrive dressed as a party – a splendid salon of fashion, performance, cocktails and moonlit dinner – but beneath the corsets and gothic glamour is something more consequential. The gala raises roughly a quarter of State Street Ballet’s contributed income, helping make possible everything that follows after the fortunes are read, the Dior bag finds a new arm, and Dracula slips back into the shadows.

A bigger production. A longer season. New choreography. New cities. More work for artists. More reasons for audiences to come through the theater doors.

Something Is Growing in the Dark Taken separately, these are productions. Taken together, they reveal something larger happening at State Street Ballet.

Three years into MacDougall and Philipp’s leadership, the company is simultaneously commissioning major new work, expanding existing productions, touring new cities, collaborating with nationally recognized artists and local cultural institutions, developing choreographers, and investing more deeply in its dancers.

Perhaps the clearest measure of that growth never appears beneath a spotlight.

For the past two years, State Street Ballet’s artists were guaranteed 26 weeks of work. This season, with additional touring, the new Choreographic Institute and the demands of creating these productions, that number rises to 32 weeks – a level Philipp describes as competitive with other dance companies around the country.

For dancers who have moved their lives to Santa Barbara, six additional weeks are more than a statistic. They mean more sustainable careers, more time in the studio, and more opportunity to become part of the community at whose pleasure they perform.

MacDougall and Philipp are quick to place this evolution within the company’s larger history. Founder Rodney Gustafson spent three decades building State Street Ballet; today’s leadership describes itself as standing on his shoulders. Yet after three years of pushing the company forward, neither sounds particularly interested in settling comfortably onto them.

There is, as Philipp puts it, a “hunger for more.”

Finding Riesling in the Finger Lakes

“Fantastic Voyage!” I reply, citing 1967’s true story of a surgical team injected into the neck of an injured diplomat. Raquel Welch is attacked by leucocytes and Donald Pleasence is eaten by a white corpuscle. I mention the Raquel Welch business and there is a moment of deafening silence.

“Let’s head upstairs,” Richard says.

UPS UPS AND AWAY “I’d known about Hale through mutual friends of ours that owned a record store in town...” (Just Play Music) “…so I knew about Hale. I knew that he’d been president of Capitol Records, and we would occasionally run into each other at the UPS store, next to Peet’s Coffee on State Street.”

Today these guys’ renowned and utterly implausible extravaganza at Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theatre is a rock ‘n’ roller’s wet dream (very very figuratively speaking), a gathering that may best be described as a secular church service with amplified apparitions. The yearly Lobero staple mines Hale Milgrim’s endless font of rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes, Richard Salzberg’s overflowing wellspring of music knowledge (not sure why the sudden water imagery, but let’s move on), and the congregation’s deep-seated

faith in rock ‘n’ roll’s ability to both bend metal and stir the hardened heart.

“Richard has an incredible wealth of content,” Milgrim says. “Wonderful music and artists that in some cases only a few people have seen. But that’s a key.”

The top of the stairs open onto a kind of large loft with several doors leading to separate rooms. In a corner of the loft overlooking the home’s lower level there is a large desk with computer, above which a beautiful Brad Howe mobile slowly spins in household currents. Richard starts opening cabinets and specialized, media-crammed closets, and my remaining hair stands on end, packs its bags, and prepares to leave my scalp.

“So what I wanted to show you here is my collection,” Salzberg says. “This is all music. I have about 15,000 albums and CDs, essay CDs, DVD audios, high resolution formats. Most of what you’re looking at here is a sampling because I don’t really pull my CDs out anymore.

I downloaded most of them. I’ve got a 32-terabyte drive with a red light on.

The red light means ‘no more please.’

And that’s mostly audio material. That’s not even the video material. We have an endless amount of material.”

“I’m old enough to have seen the

ast month, I went to the Finger Lakes for Riesling Camp expecting to deepen my understanding of one of the world’s great cool-climate grapes. I did, but I also came home thinking about water. In the Finger Lakes, the lakes are not simply part of the view. They are the quiet force behind the wines, shaping the climate, softening the extremes, holding light, tempering cold, and giving the vineyards their rhythm.

Before arriving, I had tasted wines from my host winery, Heron Hill, at home; beautiful dry Rieslings that were bright, precise, refreshing, and deeply tied to place. Still, tasting a wine from afar is one thing. Standing beside the lakes that make it possible is another.

The region reveals itself slowly. Long, glacial lakes stretch between rolling hills, shale slopes, farms, villages, and vineyards, turning the landscape into something both serene and purposeful.

It is beautiful, certainly, but beauty is only the beginning. In the Finger Lakes, geography is not background. It is the story.

Located in western New York, the Finger Lakes sit between Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca, with long, narrow lakes stretching south through farmland, small towns, and vineyard-lined hillsides. For travelers, the region is most easily reached by flying into Rochester, Syracuse, or Ithaca, then renting a car to explore the lake roads, tasting rooms, villages, and waterfront stays. It is not a place to rush through.

The beauty of the Finger Lakes is in the driving, the views, the changing light, and the way each lake seems to reveal a slightly different expression of the region.

I had been invited by the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance to attend Finger Lakes Riesling Camp, an immersive program designed to bring wine professionals directly into the vineyards, cellars, conversations, and community that define the region. We stayed at Geneva on the Lake, a gracious historic property overlooking Seneca Lake, where mornings felt soft and old world, and the water seemed to hold the light long after sunrise. From there, Riesling Camp unfolded across several days of tastings, vineyard walks, panels, blending trials, meals, boat rides, and conversations with winemakers who seemed genuinely proud to welcome us into their world.

In many wine regions, hospitality can feel polished. In the Finger Lakes, it felt personal. Winemakers showed up with coolers of wine, poured generously, answered questions thoughtfully, and seemed invested in helping us understand not only their own bottles, but the larger identity of the region.

Riesling is the natural doorway. The Finger Lakes has built much of its modern reputation on the grape, and for good reason. In the glass, the best examples can be electric, with notes of lime, green apple, white peach, citrus blossom, wet stone, and sometimes a hint of petrol or honeyed complexity with age. Dry Rieslings from the region can feel almost architectural, built on acidity, tension, and purity, yet still generous enough to make you want another sip. That balance is largely thanks to the lakes.

A

historic “Super” El Niño is actively developing in the tropical Pacific Ocean, with climate experts currently suggesting there’s better than a two-thirds chance of it becoming one of the strongest such events on record since 1950; a powerful warming pattern peaking this fall and lasting through the winter, driving massive shifts in global weather, raising the potential for heavy rainfall and flooding here and around the world.

At the other extreme, projecting the likelihood of wildfires in California and elsewhere has become a controversial area for wagering in the prediction markets. The fear is that placing bets on the likelihood of a wildfire could create incentives for arsonists or encourage people to influence active fires, and this is not to mention gaming around major accidents like train wrecks, or – God forbid – the earthquake “Big One” along the San Andreas Fault.

But whatever awaits in the coming times, National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) is standing at the ready, with teams of canines and their first responder handlers capable of being deployed on very short notice.

Or rather, the canine-human teams that are placed in fire, sheriff, and police departments and other first responder organizations around the country are set to go, after having been thoroughly put through their paces in anticipation of such disasters at SDF’s National Training Center in a rural area in Santa Paula.

SDF trains dogs, mostly shelter rescues themselves, to become disaster search partners for firefighters and first responders. The dogs’ sole mission – the object of their rigorous, reward-based training – is locating survivors buried in the wreckage and rubble that is the aftermath of a natural (or other) disaster. While the Training Center itself has been in operation for just shy of a decade, the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation has been doing the work for 30 years, formed by its founder, Wilma Melville, in the desperate aftermath of a terrorist bombing in 1995. Melville was shocked and frustrated at the severe deficit of certified canine disaster search teams poring over the wreckage in the wake of the terrorist bombing that destroyed Oklahoma City’s Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

in recent years, you can bet that the prized pooches and their human partners have been on the scene in the vast majority of them. Already this year, SDF-trained teams have been deployed 11 times in response to situations as varied as Tropical Storm Bertha in Texas, a structure fire in Lancaster, CA, collapses of tunnels (Santa Ana) and a structure (Newport News, Virginia), a house explosion in Rochester, NY, a mudslide in San Clemente, and, of course, the Venezuela earthquakes.

While the practice of helping responders find trapped, living victims is of course the emotionally magnetic appeal of SDF, the real work is done during the year-long training in the woods of Santa Paula.

That process starts with finding capable canines. The hyperactive, hyper toy-focused house pet that can prove a bit too energetic for a family is just the canine persona SDF seeks. Those dogs’ unique and energetic devotion to searching and playing makes them perfect for the SDF team.

“Those dogs that are just too much for a family just need to channel that canine energy and that drive into a job,” said Denise Sanders, senior director of Communications and Search Team Operations for the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. “That toy obsession and laser-like focus that doesn’t allow them to enjoy being a pet? Those traits can sometimes mean they’re meant for more; a different life that they can thrive in, that of a search dog. It’s typically hunting and herding breeds that show that they can use their nose and really enjoy hunting for the toy.”

Mostly the dogs are found at shelters, many of which enjoy longstanding partnerships with SDF. But anyone whose energized pet is becoming difficult to deal with is encouraged to contact the organization, skipping the shelter middleman.

“If somebody has or knows of someone with a dog that’s just over the top crazy, completely toy obsessed, and they can’t handle it anymore, please have them fill out the application,” Sanders said. “We will want to take a look because that dog may be a very good candidate.”

SDF takes that energetic toy obsession – which may well be an unwelcome handful for a family seeking a calming canine companion – and channels it into training the former pet to be a search dog. Once paired (effectively for life), the human/canine team works together through the rigorous,

calamity-specific rescue scenarios whose elaborate, large scale set pieces define the 145-acre National Training Center in Santa Paula. The whole key is that while the disasters are an emotional challenge for the human responders, the dogs see it as just another electrifying game of finding their favorite toy. The search for survivors desperately clinging to life is a game these lifesaving dogs adore playing, which is why they’re willing to go for hours at full energy.

“The dogs need to be as ready as possible, which is why preparation is paramount,” Sanders said. “The idea is to provide a number of different scenarios and experiences to the dog and the handler together, prior to being needed to deploy. Urban environments are so complex, we aren’t able to replicate every possible scenario that may come up.

But when the teams get to where they’re going, they’ve at least had experiences from their training here that gave them an idea of where to start and how to build from there. They aren’t trying to figure it out as they go. They have something to pull from.”

The humans need the extensive training, too.

“They learn to understand how to best utilize their canine partner and teams’ skill set to tackle this problem at a disaster site, knowing the magnitude of it and that lives are at stake,” Sanders said.

Once the dog and devoted handler are partnered up and fully prepared, they’ll join a roster of more than 100 active search teams placed with 15 different task forces. That includes one team here in Santa Barbara that’s part of the Los Angeles County Task Force.

Eric Gray and his current canine search companion, Dee, deployed to Venezuela most recently. Gray also worked at the Montecito Mudslides back in 2018 with his first search dog Riley. His being stationed here means we’re more fortunate than most in having a team nearby available at a moment’s notice.

“This team is right there in your backyard and they’re ready to go,” Sanders said.

Masnicová might actually be the most accomplished accordionist of the trio, Pesaturo allowed, which might seem ironic given his awards and records. (“My dad says about the World Championships, ‘That and $2 won’t get you a cup of coffee.’”)

But technical skill is not the only issue, he said.

“It’s about being a tremendous musician. When I was at NEC, I studied with drummers and they’re like, ‘How do you learn accordion from drums?’ Um… time and polyrhythms and so many important things to learn. Pianists and bass players and trumpet players, they learn from everybody there. It’s not only about your instrument. You’ve already got that dialed in before you get the NEC.” Speaking of which, the trio of accordionists will be accompanied by famed local drummer Kevin Winard, a jazz wizard who can play in any of their styles. Pesaturo said he’s looking forward to the show for the chance to improvise alone and with Mann and Winard, seeing where their intuition and interplay leads.

“I imagine there’ll be a lot of back and forth between Brian and me,” he said. “It’s going to be really fun.”

That includes experimenting with one of Pesaturo’s favorite instruments, his electronic-digital accordion.

“It’s tremendously versatile,” he said. “We already have bass chords and the melody, and total control of the phrasing with the bellows, but the digital adds in all the sounds. I can have touch sensitivity on instruments like piano and guitar, or anything really that you would hit or pluck with velocity sensitivity. And I still have the organ or violin or a clarinet, or what have you. What it does for me is amplify why the accordion is the best instrument ever.”

If Pesaturo has his way, other people might start thinking that way too.

The board voted to send a letter supporting Santa Barbara County’s proposed ban on gas-powered leaf blowers, accepting the recommendation of the Association’s Community and Government Relations Committee.

Flood preparedness generated substantial discussion. Residents described significant sediment buildup, clogged underpasses, eroding creek banks and an undersized bridge along the San Leandro Creek corridor. Particular concern was raised about the freeway underpass, which residents said has not been adequately cleared since the 2018 debris flow, and the San Leandro Lane bridge, which carries important utility lines and may be vulnerable during a major storm.

A community meeting is planned for September 14 from 4:30 to 6 pm at Montecito Union School, with a hybrid participation option anticipated. Representatives from responsible agencies and the offices of state and federal elected officials will be invited.

Additional meeting information will be shared as it becomes available.

The board expressed support for launching “Montecito Matters,” a monthly podcast featuring local public-safety leaders, elected officials, community organizations, historians and businesses. Episodes would help residents better understand important local issues while creating new material for the Association’s website, newsletter and social media channels.

ublic safety, wildfire readiness, flood prevention and several new community initiatives took center stage at the Montecito Association’s August board meeting.

Chief Brian Fallon of the Montecito Fire District reported that approximately 10% of district personnel are currently supporting mutual-aid assignments outside the community, while adequate staffing remains in place to protect Montecito. A new partnership with the Montecito Water District will further strengthen local coverage during Red Flag Warnings.

A four-person brush engine company will be temporarily stationed at the Water District’s East Valley Road pump station, reducing emergency response times on Montecito’s east side by approximately seven minutes.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department reviewed several recent incidents involving theft, illegal camping, public intoxication and indecent exposure. Lieutenant Rich Brittingham emphasized the importance of residents pressing charges when suspects are identified and stolen property is recovered.

Without a cooperating victim, deputies may be unable to make an arrest or pursue prosecution, potentially allowing repeat offenses.

The new Miramar sheriff ’s substation is now operational, giving deputies a convenient location for breaks, report writing, and logistical support while helping maintain a more consistent law-enforcement presence in Montecito.

The Montecito Water District reported that seismic retrofits are ahead of schedule, with work on eight of the district’s nine reservoirs expected to be completed by the end of the year. Construction at the Park Lane Reservoir is underway. Groundwater levels are above the historical average and higher than last year. The district has also partnered with Lotusland and the Montecito Community Foundation to create a new waterwise demonstration garden.

The Montecito Sanitary District is preparing for a potentially wet winter by identifying illegal stormwater connections to the sewer system. During storms, these connections can increase wastewater flows by as much as seven times, raising treatment costs and placing unnecessary pressure on the sys-

There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds, well over probably a thousand artists that we have thought ‘this one will be perfect for this show.’ And by the time we get closer to the show, they didn’t quite make the cut. Not that they weren’t still brilliant!”

“And that’s the hardest part,” Salzberg says. “Because they’re like our children, and there’s only room in the boat for enough of us. When we have to throw some into the water, which ones are going to stay and which ones are going to go?”

Okay? Here I am in the presence of these twin pillars and the deep, happy, dedicated energy is palpable.

We’ve all had the experience with a pal; “check out this song!” These gents have parlayed that vibratory love of songs, songwriters, and the rock ‘n’ roll canon into a mission. Salzberg is the walking encyclopedic rock archive and self-described Music Maniac™,

Milgrim is – yeah – former CEO of Capitol Records, having risen to that exalted station from an inaugurating clerkship at Discount Records in Isla Vista, a management position with that chain in Berkeley, and from there a suborbital rocket ride with stops at WEA group in San Francisco, Warner Bros., Elektra/ Asylum/Nonesuch, Reprise. Milgrim’s rise through the music biz is half American dream and half interval-leaping guitar solo. When he and his wife Anne move up to Santa Barbara post-Capitol, Milgrim throws his superpowers at the local music fiefdom, joining the board and becoming heavily involved in the resuscitation of the Santa Barbara Bowl, co-producing the Sings Like Hell series at the Lobero for the whole of its nearly two decade run, and hosting his own radio show on KTYD. “That’s Roger Dean,” Salzberg is saying of some personally signed album art on the wall. “He did all the Yes album covers.”

These guys are hobbyists like Stradivari was a woodworker. Their combined collection is preposterous, a deep cache of rock ‘n’ roll musical history, shelved and catalogued in every audio and visual format humankind has yet produced.

Elizabeth’s Appraisals P&A Burner and the Flame that Connects Us

I

n 69 billion Facebook “friendships,” the average number of degrees of separation between two people is only 4.74 links. The old theory of “six degrees of separation” suggested that any two people on Earth are connected by no more than six social relationships.

Objects possess a similar uncanny property.

An object carries the memory of its maker, its owners, its travels, and its purpose through time. Objects explain themselves.

They have a remarkable way of uniting people through their own narratives, if one is curious enough to ask them their history.

This little green kerosene lamp proves the point.

My research yielded far more than the lamp’s manufacturer, or its value in the marketplace. It introduced my Santa Barbara client, JT, to Don and Kay, owners of the historic Plume House Inn in Thomaston, Connecticut. A lamp sitting quietly on a California table reached across 2,460 miles – and more than a century – to reunite itself with the town where it was born.

JT’s lamp is a late nineteenth-century pressed-glass kerosene lamp of pale uranium green, with a rounded font and a brass burner stamped “P&A Risdon, Danbury, Conn.” The “P” stands for David Scott Plume (1829-1907), an inventive Connecticut Yankee whose improvements to the humble brass burner helped illuminate America before electricity became commonplace.

Plume prospered. His success enabled him and his partners to build one of Thomaston’s grand houses overlooking the Naugatuck Valley. Today that house survives as the Plume House Inn, lovingly operated by the aforementioned Don and Kay. Each guest room displays lamps fitted with Plume burners and clocks made by Plume’s business associate, Seth Thomas. When I located the owners of Plume’s former home, two families who had never met found themselves discussing the history of one little lamp. The object had introduced them.

That, I think, is what antiques do at their very best. They connect us not simply with history, but with people.

Plume’s company flourished after the Civil War, manufacturing brass burners, lamp fittings, knobs, and caps, while supplying brass fittings for oil-burning lamps, heaters, and chandeliers. By 1906 the firm’s catalogue devoted seventy-eight pages to lamps and lamp fittings 20 – 27 August 2026

alone – wall sconces, hanging lamps, banquet lamps, student lamps, table lamps, and every imaginable fitting.

Between 1871 and 1912 the company received sixty-two lighting patents, while Plume’s partner, Lewis J. Atwood, was awarded 44 patents of his own.

Plume invested in a brass rolling mill near Danbury, Connecticut, where rolled brass was manufactured into burners and clock parts. There he collaborated with the young clockmaker Seth Thomas of Waterbury, supplying brass components for Thomas’s growing clock business, which would become a household name. Plume’s factory also produced the famous “Eagle” lamp burner that held the wick, and P&A burners continued to be used well into the twentieth century. As late as 1910, Americans were still purchasing glass kerosene lamps fitted with P&A burners.

Tragedy struck in 1955 when the company, having relocated to Thomaston, was devastated by the great Naugatuck River flood, which destroyed bridges, factories, homes, railroad lines, automobiles, livestock, and machinery through-

out the valley. Remarkably, the company survived and continued manufacturing lamps into the 1970s.

It is difficult for us today to imagine lighting a lamp each night. Electricity arrived far more slowly than we imagine. In 1910 only a small percentage of American homes had electric service. Even by 1935 much of rural America still relied upon kerosene because electric companies considered country homes too expensive to connect.

Franklin Roosevelt’s Rural Electrification Administration finally changed that. When I was born in the late 1950s there were still places in America where kerosene lamps were practical necessities.

JT’s lamp, complete with its original P&A burner, has a value of approximately $150. Yet its greater value was introducing two families separated by 2,460 miles – and reminding us that the humblest household objects, those that live with us every day, often carry the richest stories. It is not the great painting that tells the richest story, but the lowly objects that live with us daily.

Functional objects, they are called; in the case of an oil kerosene lamp, its function is now obsolete in our world of electric gadgets glowing with blue screen light, yet it reminds us of a kitchen in Connecticut lit by its warm yellow glow in 1871. Today its function is secondary to its story: a reminder of an America before electricity, and of two families, separated by two coasts, brought

together in 2026 by one small lamp.

The same could be said of the Finger Lakes district itself. This is not a region of grand performance or showy luxury.

Its charm, quieter and more sincere, lives in the view from a tasting room table, the cool air coming off the lake, the barn lunch, the long conversation with a winemaker, and the way someone pours another splash because they want you to understand the next layer. The Finger Lakes is not trying to be California, Germany, Austria, or Alsace, though one can draw thoughtful comparisons to each of these. It has its own identity: glacial lakes, shale, slopes, cool air, agricultural grit, academic curiosity, hospitality, experimentation, and a wine community that feels unusually united in purpose.

Riesling tasting hosted by Lakewood Vineyards

potential of the region. At Fox Run, conversations turned to climate change and vineyard adaptation. At Silver Thread, sustainability felt less like a marketing word and more like a working philosophy shaped by the realities of growing grapes in a humid, cool-climate environment. At Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, overlooking Keuka Lake, the historical weight of the region came into focus.

This is where the Eastern United States vinifera movement found one of its great proving grounds, and where European grape varieties helped redefine what was possible in New York wine.

There were also sparkling wines, heritage grapes, red wines, rosés, and bottles that reminded us Riesling may open the door, but it is not the whole house.

That point surfaced often, whether at Ravines, Wagner, Weis, Boundary Breaks, Lamoreaux Landing, Thirsty Owl, Glenora, Hillick & Hobbs, Apollo’s Praise, Living Roots, Idol Ridge, or Heron Hill. The Finger Lakes can do more than one thing, and increasingly, the most compelling producers seem eager to show exactly that.

One of the most memorable exercises was not a formal tasting, but a blending trial. We were given base wines and asked to create our own Riesling blends based on style, balance, taste, and instinct. Then we corked and labeled our bottles, two to take home and one left behind for a blind tasting. It was playful, but it was also revealing, because every small decision mattered. A little more acidity here, a touch more texture there, the question of dryness, the shape of fruit, the finish, the way one component could lift or flatten the whole. It reminded me that even in a region known for freshness and precision, Riesling is never simple. It is transparent, and transparency demands care.

benefit from their moderating influence. In winter, the lakes release stored warmth, helping protect vines from extreme cold. In spring, their coolness can delay budbreak, reducing the risk of frost damage. During the growing season, breezes, slopes, drainage, and reflected light all contribute to the delicate equation of ripening in a cool climate. This is lake effect in its most beautiful form, and once you see it from the water, the idea stops being theoretical.

On a boat ride across Seneca Lake, the vineyards appeared in layers above the shore, their rows climbing across slopes that looked gentle from a distance but felt much steeper underfoot. You could see how the shale shaped the land, how the lakes carved the valleys, and why growers here pay such close attention to site. The wines began to make even more sense. They were not simply crisp or refreshing. They were translations of a place where climate, geology, water, and patience all meet in the glass.

But after standing in the vineyards, watching a storm move across a lake, feeling the cold water, and listening to growers speak about frost, humidity, slope, shale, and sunlight, that same glass becomes something more. It becomes a landscape, a memory, and a reason to pay attention.

That is the beauty of the Finger Lakes. The wines are not only refreshing. They are revealing. They carry the coolness of the lakes, the patience of the growers, and the intelligence of a region still defining itself with remarkable clarity. I arrived thinking about Riesling, but I left understanding why

the lakes matter.

necessary; conservation to which you can Twist and Shout.

“So this is my theater room,” Salzberg says. The room is black clad and leather-bound, the enfolding comfy chairs just the ticket for ecstatic/hypnotic launches into the rock ether. He gestures at two black refrigerators on either side of the enormous screen up front. “These speakers were designed in the 1940s by Paul Klipsch. At a time when probably the most powerful amplifier was 20 amps, Klipsch wanted something that he could put into a hall that could produce a large amount of sound with very low wattage.” Salzberg pauses, possibly for effect. He needn’t bother. I glance at Milgrim and he smiles, eyebrows arching, as if to say How about that? “If I turn these up,” Salzberg says with some gravity, “we could blow ourselves out of the room.

But it’s only 150 watts per speaker.

And I have these two Macintosh amps.

There’s Dolby Atmos speakers in the room which you’ll experience. This is also a 3D projector. We do some 3D in here. Pick a place, sit wherever you’re comfortable.”

The August 29 show at the Lobero has the theme of “Little if ever seen/largely unknown video clips of artists in unusual and intimate settings” (my drawnout nomenclature…). McCartney flubbing a lyric and apologizing on an outtake before a small audience, B.B. King wailing on guitar (and reportedly terrified) at Sing Sing, whose tenants movingly writhe and laugh in their seats, losing themselves in the moment’s pure freedom, Taylor Goldsmith, Israel Nebeker, and more stupefying stuff.

The lights come up. Milgrim, seated next to me, sees I’m stunned and is pleased. I’d heard that he signed Mazzy Star back in the day and I have questions about process, about creative intuition at that level.

“You never know what anyone is going to become,” Milgrim says. “All I know is what I’m hearing right then and there and seeing. Bonnie Raitt put out seven records before she did Nick of Time.

Mazzy Star took years to do a record and then took years to do the follow up to Fade into You, and I wasn’t even at the company by the time they did the next record. I signed Radiohead off of ‘Creep,’ but I was gone from the company with their subsequent records.”

Salzberg is listening and nodding.

“Richard will tell you,” Milgrim says.

“He’ll go through all the music that he was listening to in the ‘80s, ‘90s, 2000, 2010 and on and on. Richard and I have talked about the difference in our age a few times. I was born in the late ‘40s.

So just being at that right age at that moment in time and being able to go to concerts in downtown L.A. or whatever was – they were $2.50, $3.”

“I’ve asked friends,” Salzberg says.

“I’ve even asked Hale this question.

How many times do we sit down and listen to an album anymore? Listen to the whole album beginning to end and soak it all in?”

Dylan didn’t know how right he was.

The times have indeed changed, but for these two, it’s all of a piece – to our common good fortune.

“I never actually dreamt of any of this,” Capitol’s former CEO says, his grin widening (if that’s even possible).

“Those things were not my dream. My dream was to be able to work in a record

store. Do you remember them?”

“One was the eagerness with which the students engaged the questions in the activity. They dove right in, and they came up with good, thoughtful answers.

The second thing was how well the themes of our discussion dovetailed with the rest of the morning’s talks, especially Jennifer Gee’s introduction to the physics of planetary motion.”

Sara Morrisset, assistant professor of history, expanded the camp’s scope by guiding students through historical and archaeological perspectives. “I taught about the intersection of archaeology and other subjects the campers would learn about, such as Biblical archaeology, ancient technological discoveries, and archaeoastronomy – the study of how people in the past tracked, viewed and built architecture in relation to the stars.”

Morrisset added that students showed vibrant curiosity during her session.

“They seemed to be especially interested in the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient computing device found in a shipwreck in the Mediterranean,” Morrisset said.

The week also integrated spiritual reflection alongside academic discovery.

Daniel Gee, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, led an evening worship service at the Westmont Observatory under the stars.

Carlson noted that the camp created an environment where passionate young scholars thrived together. “Science by the Sea is the kind of experience where you can expect everyone there to be deeply

excited by the topic – and that showed,” he said, “both in how students engaged with the material, each other, and their genuine enthusiasm to engage in hard topics every day during summer break.”

Participants reported that the week solidified their academic ambitions and deepened their affinity for Westmont’s Christian liberal arts community. Campers noted that the program confirmed their plans to pursue college majors in physics, chemistry, and mathematics.

Following the success of the inaugural session, Westmont faculty plan to host the camp again next summer.

College Launches Year-Round, All-Ages Music Academy Building on a decade of successful summer youth programming, Westmont launches a year-round community music school designed for every age and skill level. Joanne Kim, who teaches clarinet at Westmont and Santa Barbara City College, directs the Westmont Music Academy (WeMA), which begins its inaugural session Aug. 28 on the Montecito campus.

WeMA builds on the foundation of the Westmont Academy for Young Artists (WAYA), an intensive summer music program established in 2015. “WeMA takes that foundation and expands it into a year-round community music school for all ages and levels,” Kim said.

“We want students to be able to enter the program at many different stages – from a young child discovering music for the first time, to a beginner learning an instrument, to an advanced student or adult continuing their musical journey.”

The academy offers private lessons, early childhood music classes involving movement and singing, beginning violin and piano academy courses, musicianship classes and chamber music ensembles.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned is that every student is different,” says Kim, a teaching artist with the Santa Barbara Symphony. “Students have different personalities, goals, strengths, and ways of learning, so good teaching means meeting students where they are and helping them move forward.

“Children also love chamber music,” Kim said. “I saw students become especially excited when they got to play music with their friends, rehearse together, and work toward a performance as a group.

It reminded me that students don’t just want to learn their instrument, they want to make music with other people.”

WeMA, which aims to strengthen connections between the college and the surrounding Santa Barbara community, offers scholarship opportunities for its chamber music and advanced performance programs to ensure broad participation.

“My biggest hope is that WeMA becomes a place where people can discover and grow through music at any stage of life,” Kim said. “Most of all, I hope students experience the joy of making music with other people.”

In the senior 100-meter hurdles final, she broke her own national record three times, finishing with a record time of 15.59 seconds.

She also earned a silver medal with Guam’s mixed 4x400 relay team, setting another national record. “I enjoyed that the most, because there were more people involved and it was just such a team thing,” Wilson said. “Team spirit is a little hard to get in track because it’s such an individual sport, but the pride of representing Guam and getting that national record was unforgettable.”

As she joins Westmont, Wilson hopes her journey inspires other young athletes back home. “I think it’s important to show people from Guam that there are other options,” Wilson said. “You don’t have to put limitations on your hopes

and dreams. Anything is possible.”

Incoming Warrior Medals for Guam First-year Westmont track and field student-athlete Hazel Wilson added another milestone to her young career this summer, representing Guam at the 2026 Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, Australia, where she earned multiple medals, set a national record, and helped showcase the growth of track and field in her home country.

Wilson’s journey to Westmont began unexpectedly when her father and younger sister met Westmont students who were part of the college’s inaugural summer 2025 trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

“It’s definitely a God thing for sure,” Wilson said.

Her interest led to a campus visit, where she spent time with head coach Russell Smelley and the Westmont track and field team. During her visit, Wilson immersed herself in the team’s training session. “She came, visited, and earnestly wanted to learn, especially with hurdles,” Smelley said. “She fit well with the team and probably worked harder than anybody in the group that day.”

McDonald. The record-breaking sixtime Tony Award winner performed selections from the Great American Songbook with her trio, joined by the Sing! Children’s Choir.

Audra traveled far for this curtain call. Peter R. Taffae, who joined the Music Academy board a year ago, noted that she had flown in from Australia, where husband and Broadway star Will Swenson is starring as Neil Diamond in A Beautiful Noise in Melbourne, before heading on to NYC after the gala.

“Audra was amazing,” Peter said. “I think the most insightful thing about the Music Academy is the passion and the commitment of all who are involved in it.

They attract the best of the best, and I feel honored to be associated with it.”

The evening also honored Cheryl, whose landmark founding contribution is helping create The Muse, the Academy’s new downtown Music Education Center at 901 State Street, scheduled to open in 2028. The gift honors her late husband, Michael Goldberg.

“The highlight was Audra McDonald, whose voice mesmerized us in the beautiful setting of the Bella Vista Estate,” Goldberg said. “And for me, the special treat was the miniature model of the Muse that was set up at the entrance to the event. It was very exciting to see what it will actually look like in 3D.” The Gala supports full scholarships for Music Academy fellows and expanding community music education programs.

“Who let the dogs out?” joked Jane Lynch, as the classic tune played out over the crowd.

At the Rosewood Miramar Beach, the answer was more than 40 contenders, taking over the Great Lawn for the fifth annual “Best in Show,” benefiting Santa Barbara Humane.

Celebrity hosts Jane – star of Christopher Guest’s cult classic Best in Show – and photographer Gray Malin presided over the proceedings. Jane, returning for her third year, admitted, “I love this event, I would come to it even if I weren’t hosting it!”

Local designer Penny Bianchi entered her adopted dog, Peuget. When Jane asked whether he could do any tricks, Penny deadpanned, “Sure, Jane, he can sit!” Later she added sincerely, “I adopted my lovely little dog last year, and I’m here to support SB Humane – the benefits of adopting are on both sides of the leash.”

Best Trick went to Murphington, jumping up with owner Heather Usiski.

Best Look belonged to Lucy, sporting a tiny red beret and French outfit, matching owners Lori Woldar and Frank Moldovan, plus a collar from Switzerland. Très chic, indeed.

Spectators’ Choice went to Moose, a charming German shepherd owned by Connor McManigal.

But Best in Show belonged to Chance. The Rogers family of Austin, Texas, arrived in matching custom satin pajamas covered with Chance’s picture.

Young Brady Rogers celebrated the win with a perfect plan: “I’m going to celebrate by ordering a lot of room service.”

Santa Barbara Humane CEO Kerri Burns served as a judge, with entry proceeds supporting adoptions, the petfood pantry and other local programs.

At the Miramar, every dog really does have its day – preferably with a beret, satin pajamas and room service.

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau turned a Montreal hardware store into an impromptu dance party when Trudeau’s son Xavier’s new single, Downtown, came over the radio. Trudeau broke into some decidedly dad-like moves in the aisle – with a toilet plunger making a cameo… Rob Lowe has fans buzzing with a mysterious new Netflix venture: “I’m very excited about it. Upon arrival of law enforcement, one subject was contacted in the vehicle and found to be in possession of suspected meth. The two other subjects were contacted on the beach. One subject was found to have an extraditable warrant for his arrest out of Orange County. He was arrested and booked. No crime was found in the original call for service.

Narcotics / Santa Claus Beach Sunday, August 02, at 23:30 hours After several citizens’ complaints about transients on the beach – where they were selling and using drugs, shaving their private parts in view of the kids at surf camp, and dumping their waste in the area – deputies returned to the area and cited two subjects. They had been warned some five hours earlier during the call of the vehicle disturbance. In the interim they opted to smoke a joint, make some dinner, and disseminate some trash about the area.

Narcotics / Sheffield NB onramp Monday, August 03, at 22:28 hours Deputies responded to a call of a shirtless male with pants around his knees who was running around the streetlight and going in and out of the roadway. Deputies contacted the male who provided a false name and date of birth [148.9(a) PC; False Identification] and was clearly Under the Influence of drugs [647(f) PC; Public Intoxication]. During a consented search of his backpack, deputies located a syringe loaded with suspected meth [11377(a) HS, Possession of Controlled Substance; 11364(a) HS, Possession of Paraphernalia]. He was arrested and booked into SBJ for the above charges.

Intoxication / Lookout Park Tuesday, August 04, at 00:55 hours Deputies responded to the location for a Has Been Drinking (HBD) female who called 911 and did not know where she was, other than on the beach. The phone number tracked to an identified subject based on previous calls, and the phone pinged at Lookout Park. Deputies arrived and located the subject, who was intoxicated to the point that she was unable to care for herself [647(f) PC]. Deputies tried to have her go to the sobering center, but subject refused that as an option. Subject was therefore arrested and booked into SBJ for 647(f) PC. Narcotics / Santa Claus Beach Wednesday, August 05, at 02:20 hours After more citizen’s complaints about transients on the beach at Santa Claus Lane dumping their waste in the area, deputies returned to the area and again cited the two subjects. They had been warned a couple days prior, following a fight involving them and their guest, and had been cited later that night and warned again about not being permitted to camp there. They were found camping again on this date, and offered an explanation as to why they had to sleep there, when the subject let it slip he preferred to living outside to living in a shelter. Subjects did break down their campsite on the beach and moved it closer to the roadway butted up against the cement wall.

Intoxication / Lookout Park Wednesday, August 05, at 10:30 hours Deputies observed subject laying down on the sidewalk near the overpass in front of Lookout Park. Upon contact, subject had multiple open beer cans. Subject informed deputies that she was trying to get to the sobering center. Subject was issued a citation for being in violation of 36-3-SBCO, Open Container. Subject was transported to the sobering center in Goleta.

Burglary / Paquita Drive Thursday, August 06, at 06:15 hours Deputies made contact with subject located at the above address in his girlfriend’s vehicle. Subject was subsequently arrested for his prior 459 (Burglary) at a hotel in June. The car was towed and phones seized for the investigation.

Indeed, the readings are performed with scripts in hand and minimal staging, instead focusing almost exclusively on the text, as actors voicing the author’s line offer the playwright input as they continue to refine the work. Meanwhile, audiences get to experience theater in an early creative phase, as well as hear directly from the artists about how the play evolves from first draft to opening night.

The new works in question for August 27 are Julia Izumi’s The Banana Factory, which will be directed by visiting artist Kate Bergstrom, the Santa Barbaraeducated actress-writer-director who now runs Repertory Theater of St. Louis; and Megan Tabaque’s The Rink at the End of the World, directed by UCSB’s Julie Fishell. Banana investigates activism and examines how that impacts children, while Rink centers around a crew of mall-rink figure skaters unexpectedly heading to a competition in Croatia when a crisis of a different order arises.

“They both have the perspective of coming from young people, looking at how high school kids are thinking about what’s going on in our world and what actions people are taking,” Brainin said. “Even though they’re dealing with dark subject matter, and there’s a lot of very sharp and interesting dialogue and characters, there’s also a lot of humor.”

Both playwrights are connected to the 4 Seasons Residency program, composed of four development organizations that include Launch Pad; Tabaque was last year’s participant, and Izumi is the current one. The Rink at the End of the World is actually in the middle of its three level UCSB connection, having also been a part of the Launch Pad’s Amplify Reading Series Festival last season, and is slated to have a fully produced run this coming spring.

“That makes it even more interesting for audiences who will have a chance to see it at the different stages of development, which is very rare,” Brianin said.

Not having Launch Pad tethered to the summer class – which usually brings in a different playwright and new work for each week of the session – not only allowed Brainin to have them run concurrently but also call on the community and other professionals for cast members rather than an exclusively student group.

Rink will feature both Westmont’s longtime theater prof Mitchell Thomas and UCSB’s Annie Torsiglieri among the players.

“Some of the cast are also able to appear in both, which should also be fun for the audiences,” Brainin said.

Both shows run 90 minutes without intermission, and will feature audience talk backs with the playwrights, directors and some of the cast after each performance.

Tales for the Fall The groundbreaking Sings Like Hell brought singer-songwriters and other emerging artists to the Lobero for more than 20 six-concert series, long before a great number of them went on to fill larger venues. SLH sadly went by the wayside almost a decade ago. But Tales from the Tavern – which replicated the concept in a more acoustic series of shows at smaller venues in Santa Ynez and has shared headliners with SLH – is still thriving. Concerts are on Wednesdays at the Maverick Saloon, the often rowdy country bar that turns into a quiet listening room for the Tales shows. The next TFTT series – which also differs from SLH in that every show is recorded on digital video along with an interview with the artist(s) for the archives – gets underway on August 26 with Bob Schneider, followed by England’s Black Feathers September 16, Jimmie Dale Gilmore (see my interview a few weeks back) and Butch Hancock on October 7, Kim Richey on October 14, a fascinating pairing of John Gorka with progressive bassist Michael Manring on October 21, and John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) with his Circle Band on November 11.

Following the procession, everyone gathered outside on the patio for blessings, and the lifting of the Torah for the community to view its script. Rabbi Chaim provided blessings and remarks, which included an invitation for the community to reflect on how the new Torah reflects the Jewish community, saying, “Have you ever thought about what happens if a letter in the Torah gets smudged, or even just slightly scratched? That’s it. The whole scroll is invalid. Why? Because every single letter matters. That’s exactly what a Jewish community is. That’s what our community here is. Nobody is a spare part we don’t really need. We need everyone. And everyone belongs.”

After the formalities, there was joyful men’s dancing and women dancing with children, an array of food, and happy photo ops.

Of note, I serendipitously wore my two new kunzite hand-beaded bracelets. Kunzite is said to attract love and feminine energy. And lol! Kunzite is named after America’s first professional gemologist and Tiffany & Co’s mineralogist/vice president George Frederick Kunz, whose newly identified pink-lilac in California mineral was named kunzite in his honor in 1903.

Between bites and sips came the other pleasure of the afternoon – catching up with Joanne and enjoying conversation with fellow guests, all against El Encanto’s dreamy Pacific backdrop.

eet Consul fabius, the Tiger Leafwing. This butterfly belongs to a group with camouflaged undersides that make them appear as mere dead leaves when resting. The Tiger Leafwing species has a second disguise as well. When flying, its boldly patterned topside causes it to resemble another species – the Tiger Longwing. All longwing butterflies are distasteful to birds, since longwing species feed on passion vines and sequester the toxins found in those plants. (If this sounds familiar, recall that Monarchs derive the same benefits from milkweed.) So, the Tiger Leafwing’s mimicry likely confers an advantage because it resembles a species that predators know isn’t good to eat. by Steven Libowitz ENDING THIS WEEK Smelly Cat at Elings – We’re not talking about overly sweaty bobcats appearing upwind at the expansive and picturesque private park on the Mesa – a park whose numerous nooks and crannies suffice to hide the creeping critters, particularly at night. Fortunately, the Mesa Music Nites series – which takes place at the lushly grass-blessed, mildly sloping area adjacent to the Singleton Pavilion – ends before sunset. The events also sport burgers and hot dogs, refreshing drinks, adult beverages, raffles, local vendors and plenty of room for dancing...or rolling down the hill if that’s your thing.

The 2026 series comes to a close on August 20 with Smelly Cat, the local cover band specializing in 1990s rock and alternative hits. Admission is FRIDAY, AUGUST 21-SUNDAY, AUGUST 23

Something Corn-y this Way Comes – The fun in Ventura this weekend is in the bag. The bean bag, that is. The Throw Down Festival has grown to be the world’s premier tournament for lovers of the lawn game alternately known as Sack Toss, which has exploded across America in recent years. Now in its 15th year, The Throw Down boasts huge cash prizes – yes, for tossing a bean bag through or near a hole on a slanted board – split among the winning teams who stand out from the thousands of entrants from across the nation and beyond.

The pro tourneys are long since filled, but attendees can enter the ongoing events in a wide variety of categories, some with entry fees as low as $10. For those who want to play cornhole just for fun, there are open courts on the expansive grounds. Additional attractions include an axe-throwing competition; MMA Live Fight Night on Friday; a Truck & Motorcycle Show on Saturday with a live motocross stunt show by 12-time X Games medalist Colby Raha; a Saturday Celebrity Throwdown Charity Tournament; and live music performances on Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday, including reggae star Pato Banton on Sunday afternoon. As always, there will be classic California beachside fare, including famous fish tacos and ahi tuna burgers from event creator/producer Spencer Makenzie’s Fish Co. Other popular local favorites will also be available for purchase.

Pacific Pride Festival – Pacific Pride Foundation 2026 Pacific Pride Festival returns once again as Santa Barbara’s largest annual celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, community, and inclusion. The free, all-ages festival brings together thousands of locals and visitors alike, families, friends and allies for a full day of entertainment and celebration. This year’s theme of ‘Out. Proud. Unstoppable.’ represents the strength, resilience, and joy of the local LGBTQ+ community with live music across multiple stages, nationally recognized performers, dance demonstrations, drag entertainment, DJs, a pet parade, interactive art installations, a vibrant Family Zone, local food trucks, community organizations, vendors, a lively Beer Garden (21+) and activities for all ages. Headlining this year’s festival is Ada Vox, who has appeared on American Idol, America’s Got Talent and Queen of the Universe, while guest host Morgan McMichaels (RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars) and official festival host and Santa Barbara fave Vivian Storm team up to anchor the day of performances and celebration. Admission is free. All are welcome. Pride is also partnering with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in creating a collaborative weaving installation that grows throughout the day, symbolizing the strength and beauty of our community when every voice becomes part of something bigger. The AIDS Memorial Quilt installation also returns. Shaw spent over a decade as a marine and environmental biologist in Florida, working for Miami-Dade County, where he led the Manatee Protection Program and managed large water-quality and habitat-monitoring projects. He now channels that experience into a mix of stand-up comedy, environmental storytelling from an unusual perspective – sea creatures and other underwater life – plus a healthy dose of dark humor about pollution and climate change to break down how we got here and why the ocean has every right to be annoyed. Fortunately, it’s not all doom and gloom, as there’s still extraordinary life hanging on beneath the waves, and

there are real actions we can take that can slow the damage and even start reversing parts of it. Laughter and learning and some surprises come together to leave the audience with both increased awe and awareness of the vast expanses that cover two-thirds of the Earth.

Lewis was last in town in late winter to play alongside Steely Dan sideman Jeff “Skunk” Baxter at SOhO for FestForums. Now Lewis returns to that venue to lead his own acclaimed Tribute to the Fillmore show. The concert honors the venue that encapsulated the vibe of the legendary 1960s-1970s San Francisco rock era and visionary promoter Bill Graham, bringing together classic songs from the venue’s diverse roster and firsthand backstage stories from musicians who lived it. Tonight’s show also honors Dave Mason (Traffic, solo career), who passed away in April.

Mystic Ocean Adventures, the 110-foot-tall Mystic Whaler, and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum join forces to offer a hands-on journey to the days of Bouchard, a French-born Argentine privateer who sailed up the California coast. Visitors can interact with costumed historical figures including Hippolyte on board the vessel, examine authentic 19th-century historical pieces on display, solve historical mysteries in a family-friendly interactive treasure hunt, or simply walk the decks of the ship and learn about traditional seafaring techniques and coastal life during the era of privateers.
