Learning About Giving

A

s the Montecito Journal’s longtime entertainment writer and editor, I must admit I didn’t know a lot about the nonprofit and philanthropic community beyond some of the big players whose names adorn the walls of the Granada and Lobero theaters and other venues in town. Or when, for example, UCSB Arts & Lectures’ Celesta Billeci introduces herself at a dance performance as the Sara Miller McCune Executive Director.

Truth be told, even the fact that the Granada, Lobero, and UCSB Arts & Lectures are actually nonprofits didn’t really register in a meaningful way, let alone all the non-art charitable organizations that impact our community.

They sure do now.

That’s because I’ve been writing the Journal’s weekly column about nonprofits that participate in the annual Giving List book since its inception in January 2021.

While the column is meant as a way to even more deeply connect the organizations with the local community, they’ve

also benefited their writer tremendously through being granted admission to the inner world of nonprofits – beyond the gala fundraisers – to the day-to-day activities of the dedicated staff who, individually and collectively, are doing all they can to make our community and, in some cases, the world a better place.

What an eye- and heart-opening experience it has been.

It started right at the beginning, with my first column on Easy Lift, the nonprofit that provides wheelchair-accessible transportation for people with limited mobility at a maximum price of no more than $7 round trip. Early in the interview with Executive Director Ernesto Paredes, I shared how discovering the organization’s Dial-a-Ride vans impacted my walker or wheelchair limited neighbor, who had told me that having the independence to arrange her own affordable rides, not only to medical appointments or grocery shopping but also just to visit a park, was one of the things that made life worth living.

Special Edition what has kept me motivated and inspired over all these years,” Paredes said, explaining how his plan to stay for a single year had turned into three decades-plus.

“Transportation isn’t sexy. It’s not sheltering someone or feeding someone. It’s just access. But you don’t realize the importance of transportation until you don’t have it.”

Now almost 100 weeks later, over the course of creating a similar number of Giving List columns, I’ve connected with nonprofits that encompass a wide swath of society covering caregivers, defenders, educators, earth keepers, and those that empower – and those who do shelter and feed people. There have been huge global organizations such as Direct Relief International and ShelterBox, and Hillside House, the local home for those with developmental or intellectual disabilities where focused attention serves to provide integrated care to its 60 residents.

“We’re like the Hotel California: People check in but they tend to not check out,” President and CEO Michael S. Rassler told me. “Hillside becomes their forever home, whether it’s the people living here, or our staff who are incredibly committed, caring, and passionate and loyal. It truly is a big family here.”

I’ve also been moved countless times by the nonprofits whose mission is directly

about feeding folks in need, from Organic Soup Kitchen, which has serviced the area’s 15,000-plus recorded cancer patients upwards of 1,000,000 bowls of nutrition-rich, immune system-boosting soup collectively over the years, to Unity Shoppe, which lets families in need “purchase” groceries in its free stores in a way of providing charity that also preserves dignity.

“More people in our community are having a hard time,” Unity Shoppe’s new Executive Director Angela Miller-Bevan said not long ago. “Our goal is to make sure that we can provide for all the families, children, seniors, homeless – everybody in our community that is needing help, and not just non-perishable food but also fresh eggs, chicken, and vegetables that make for well-rounded meals.”

And yes, I’ve also written lots of words about the arts organizations, now with a deeper understanding of how they work, and why what they do expands far beyond keeping us entertained. As the Granada’s Palmer Jackson, Jr. put it, “Our thriving and outsized arts community is part of why philanthropically-oriented people move here in the first place.

Once they’re living here, they support lots of other nonprofits, giving to health services and education and food organizations – whatever else they care about. It’s not a zero-sum game.”

t. Vincent’s is not just a place or an institution. It is Santa Barbara’s longest-running social services organization founded in 1858, and is now serving more than 600 children, mothers, seniors, and vulnerable families every day.

Its 21-acre campus has affordable housing for low-income families, early childhood education, and a Family Strengthening Program (FSP) giving two years of shelter and complete services to formerly homeless mothers and children.

The FSP provides single moms with a sense of self-worth and encouragement to believe in themselves.
