FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

Spring has sprung around our city, but what really changes when you live in paradise? The weather is basically perfect and the only obvious difference is perhaps less layers are needed as the days last longer. But it’s within the cultural landscape that we see change—starting with our thriving waterfront areas that are evolving. The Funk Zone continues to churn out creativity while the adjacent Lagoon District is fast on its heels. From the wine and food scene to the designers (see Catherine Gee “One to Watch,” page 66) in the mix, it’s exciting to see what’s brewing down there. We introduce you to some of the movers and shakers making waves and give you the lowdown on the new downtown. But creativity isn’t new to our clime. Take our in-depth look into the world-famous Santa Barbara Writers Conference (“Write On,” page 134), which literary couple Barnaby and Mary Conrad started many moons ago. With authors (and close friends) such as Joan Didion, Ray Bradbury, and Charles Schulz on the lineup, it’s no wonder it became industry legend. Now, with a new book and a documentary following the buzz, we take you for a walk down memory lane. When the de Albergaria family chose to raise their brood in a George Washington Smith French Normandy-style house on the Riviera (“Roman Holiday,” page 112), it was no coincidence. The curated home feels as worldly and sophisticated as the family that inhabits it, and the joie de vivre with which they live is inspiring. Speaking of inspiration, many artists of Santa Barbara are constantly using their surroundings to inform their work. We present a portfolio of modern-day botanicals (“Petal Pushers,” page 126) by local female painters and photographers that capture our flora in the most unique of ways. Flowers are one of the most important elements of any wedding celebration…except perhaps for the loving partner, perfect dress, and oh-so special bauble. But there are so many things to do once you are about to say “I do.” With Santa Barbara seemingly as the wedding capital of the Golden State—I’m not sure a more romantic locale can be found—we present the best of all things bridal in our special wedding section (page 141). With romance in the air, artistic endeavors aplenty, and all things abloom, this is the perfect season to celebrate life in the American Riviera—with red, white, and blue ablaze in spring’s sartorial trends—our eternal Garden of Eden.

Hands-On Science

After 25 years in the making, the highly anticipated MOXI, THE WOLF MUSEUM OF EXPLORATION + INNOVATION , has opened its doors downtown next to the train

station. Three floors and 17,000 square feet are filled with a makerspace, lookout tower, rooftop deck (available for private events), and interactive exhibits grouped into “tracks”—from sound and force to light and speed. The LEED-certified museum (tickets: from $10) is not just for the eyes—it lets kids and adults be playful together, be it racing cars, recording sound effects, testing how high they can jump, or tiptoeing over gravel to measure sound. “MOXI is the newest science museum in the world with one-of-a-kind, hands-on experiences that depend on your creativity to bring them to life,” says CEO Steve Hinkley. “This isn’t a place where you’ll read lots of text or passively view things. This is a place for kids and kids-at-heart to let loose and play. We hope to help expand the way our guests—particularly children—think about the world. We cannot only prepare them for the future, we can empower them to define it.” 125 State St., Santa Barbara, 805-708-2282. J E N N I F E R B L A I S E K R A M E R M O X I .O RG

WHEEL HOUSE

Good to Go

After starting The Santa Barbara Company in 2012 with her mom, Caroline Law has gone out on her own to launch another gift box company called PHYLA after her middle name, Phila. With a focus on sustainability and fair trade, Law fills the wooden boxes (pictured, from $55) with luxe artisan products, including Ojai olive oil, Handlebar coffee, and organic lip balm. “We are trying to move away from a culture that values endless amounts of mass-produced ‘stuff’ and toward beauty and thoughtfulness,” says Law. Create and send your own box online or purchase a premade gift bundle and PHYLA will make a donation to a good cause, such as World Bicycle Relief. 805-364-2502. J . B . K .

Tucked in the back of the Funk Zone behind mircrobreweries and tasting rooms is a boutique gym that’s brewing with mad science. THE LAB —a partner with P3 and Elite Performance & Rehabilitation—offers regular clients the same specialized training as NBA, MLB, and NFL pros, which cofounder Dr. Marcus Elliott says, “takes the guesswork out of injury prevention and optimization.” Programs (inquire for pricing) are highly customized after initial biomechanical and force-plate run assessments. And each workout to follow, be it weight training or a jog on the antigravity treadmill, revolves around individual attention—so much so that the team caps membership at 30 people. “We’re committed to the transformation of members’ lives—in the way their bodies move and perform. We’re intentionally selective,” says general manager Ruth Loomer. Members round out their experience with massage and cryotherapy, while nonmembers can dip into the gym for à la carte Pilates and yoga classes. 121 Gray Ave., Santa Barbara, 805-679-6750. J . B . K . A Ripe Idea Apeel Sciences puts a new lease on the lifespan of produce Just off Milpas—where warehouses churn out everything from iron to beer—is an unassuming building that’s brimming with creatives and scientists. Inside, avocados ripen on steel racks at a slothlike pace while technicians don goggles in a Breaking Bad-like lab with healthy initiatives to fight world hunger one fruit and vegetable at a time. APEEL SCIENCES is the brainchild of James Rogers and backed by investors including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and innovators like chief commercial officer Jason Spievak, who cofounded local tech start-up successes such as Invoca. The concept is an all-natural, invisible, tasteless, odorless, microlayer made of plant derivatives (everything from broccoli stems to vineyard grape scraps) that coats produce in effort to slow down spoilage. “It’s entirely composed of food,” says Spievak. FDA approved to the highest designation of GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe), Apeel’s pre- and postharvest products, Invisipeel and Edipeel,

have optimized formulations for each specific food—from tomatoes to mangos. Bananas can be naturally treated so precisely that consumers could purchase a bunch of seven that would ripen individually each day of the week. Aiming to revolutionize the agriculture industry by reducing the reliance on pesticides and chemical preservatives, Apeel targets farmers big and small—from corporate giants to locals like Jay Ruskey of Good Land Organics in Goleta. Since experimenting with the product, Ruskey has more than doubled the lifespan of his prized caviar limes, which could drastically widen his distribution and raise profits. Apeel currently has 60 employees—more than half of which are UC Santa Barbara grads— but that number is soon to grow along with its facilities when the headquarters move to Goleta this spring, carrying on its in-office yoga and Friday guacamole challenges. However, this homegrown company has lofty goals, knowing that expanding the lifespan of fruit could help salvage 50 percent of produce that’s lost to spoilage worldwide. While that number is more like 30 percent in the United States, it climbs to 90 percent in sub-Saharan Africa. “Hunger is a global problem and we need a global solution,” says Spievak. “Apeel is the cheapest, easiest, safest way in the world to make more food.” J . Founded by avid free diver Chris Goldblatt, the FISH REEF PROJECT (FRP) began as a small Santa Barbara nonprofit and has since evolved into America’s first National Reefing Entity. With a mission to “help ocean life thrive,” and successful projects in California and Hawaii, FRP’s latest undertaking involves building a five-acre artificial reef in the waters off Summerland Beach. The new reef will not only restore and stimulate marine life impacted by 100 years of leaking wellheads, but also provide a local and sustainable area for fishing and dive tourism. Internationally, FRP has become a well-recognized global ambassador for ocean-health projects, and its International Marine Mitigation Bank system has been adopted all around the world as the default procedure for addressing deep-sea mining’s harmful impact on ocean life. “We have carried the torch a great distance,” says Goldblatt, but now the FRP seeks your help—namely in its effort to raise $5 million to deploy and monitor the Summerland project. The new reef will be named after the largest donors in honor of their contribution to their community and their role in “establishing a legacy of ocean health for generations to come.” 315 Meigs Rd., Santa Barbara, 831-2742302. Supermodel Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger’s second turn on the catwalk was a preppy and bohemian dream. In February, the see-now, buynow TOMMY X GIGI collection romped a Venice Beach runway—a seaside strand turned into the ultimate #TommyLand amusement park, fanned with flamethrowers, high-flying rides, and a surprise performance by Fergie. The Montecito/Malibu-raised model/designer made it a family affair, with stunning sister Bella Hadid joining her in the much-hyped fashion fete. More family and friends were front row, including their mother, Yolanda; father, Mohamed; and brother, Anwar (who is also hitting the modeling jackpot these days) as well as Lady Gaga and other Los Angeles A-listers. Gigi and Hilfiger put a twist on each other’s East Coast meets West Coast tastes— think piles of revamped Hilfiger logos mixed in with graphic swimwear, patchwork denim, metallic jackets, and a bevy of boho dresses that closed the show. “It’s a great moment for fashion in California, and we were thrilled to take the show there this season,” says industry icon Hilfiger. “Our Spring 2017 collection is inspired by the casual, cool, chic vibe that’s so signature to California.” G I N A T O L L E S O N

JAM Session

Designer to the stars JEFFREY ALAN MARKS is known for his role on BRAVO’s Million Dollar Decorators and for his beach-infused interiors all across the globe. “JAM” or “Jammie”—as he’s affectionately called by fans and clients alike—has been spending more and more time here, bringing his “rugged yet sophisticated” style to lucky locals. The interior designer says he’s “just as at home in London decorating a Georgian townhouse as he is building dream homes in California beach towns” and always pulls together big, bold looks, be it a navy and white-striped dining room or a Beach Club dog bed—one of the new products in his line for Palecek. Other pieces include an oversized rattan pendant and a hand-woven rope seat, warmly named the Santa Barbara armchair. Hoping to one day call our slice of paradise home, JAM always keeps an eye out for property and enjoys hitting the hot spots while off duty. 310-207-2222. Take home a slice of Joanna Gaines’s style from HOME SANTA BARBARA .

Welcome HOME Fans of HGTV’s Fixer Upper will be happy to hear Joanna Gaines’s style has landed in Santa Barbara. Lisa Knutson and Lisa Rodgers, along with local coowners Lynsey and Jason Trueman, opened HOME SANTA BARBARA in The Hub downtown, offering locals a slice of Gaines’s warm designs. Customers can pick up a piece of decor or order roomfuls of the famed Magnolia furniture via in-house consultants—a huge perk, as Gaines doesn’t sell anything online. Genres range from farmhouse to industrial to boho to architectural—a new line that debuted last fall. “It all goes together,” Knutson says. “Mix and match— you don’t have to design the whole house.” But if you’re a huge fan, you could. 14 Parker Way, Santa Barbara, 805-470-9776. EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE has brought the concept of estate sales to an online marketplace forum that’s rocking the vintage and antiques shopping experience. Similar to physical estate sales, EBTH works with people who experience a major life event (i.e., death, move, retirement) and then posts their goods online for bidders and buyers across the world to access. Oil paintings, oriental rugs, silver, china, chaises, and more are rounded up from cities everywhere 350 times a month, with items starting at $1, so the pursuit is endless. J . B . K . Wall Power The often agonizing and expensive process of framing art just got a whole lot easier and more affordable. In a few clicks, FRAMEBRIDGE sizes up your piece with an estimate (nothing is more than $159) and sends you a tube to mail it to their staff of designers who help select the right material. Within days, the framed artwork is safely back to you, beginning an addictively easy process to finally get all those family portraits and collected drawings on the wall. J . B . K .

Amid the persistence of California’s severe drought, two local women have taken it upon themselves to be part of the solution. Meet Paige Minney and Stephanie Ranes, the power team behind SAGE & WILLOW , a local landscape consultancy that specializes in California-native and drought-resistant gardens. With ingenuity and a pair of enviable green thumbs, the duo transforms properties into ecologically sound landscapes that are water wise and beautiful, helping Santa Barbarans shape their drought-stricken yards and cut their water bills in half. Starting with hand-drawn designs, they deliver colorful concepts often filled with lots of lavender, poppies, and many times, sage and willow. C H A N T A L P E T E R S O N

Having recently partnered with SANFORD WINERY for the most memorable wine-tasting experience on the Central Coast, NANCO HELICOPTERS now offers private picnic and tasting tours for two ($499/ person) via a scenic 30-minute flight on a Robinson R44 Raven. From the hangar in Goleta, owner/ pilot Taylor Nancarrow flies guests up the Gaviota Coast and over the Sta. Rita Hills to the winery, located in the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley. “We saw an opportunity to provide a unique mode of transportation to one of the most renowned vineyards in Santa Barbara County,” says Nancarrow. “We look forward to sharing this high-end experience with our customers.” Upon arrival, oenophiles are greeted with sips of bright, not overly oaky Chardonnays, crisp rosés, and luscious Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, La Rinconada, and more. “We encourage guests to ask questions and our hosts to adapt the level of detail to their preference,” says Sanford sales director Francesca Lindley. Topping it off—a rustic and elegant picnic overlooking the stunning vineyards along with the estate-grown wines. G I N A Z . T E R L I N D E N NANCOHELICOP TERS .CO M SANFORDWINERY.COM

Family Affair

It was “the desire of being part of the community and the beautiful location that we found across the street from the Courthouse Sunken Gardens” that made brothers Frederic and Nicolas Meschin want to open a Santa Barbara iteration of their much-loved Los Angelesbased THE LITTLE DOOR restaurant. With the help of their cousin Emmanuelle Recher (a dietitian) and chefs Jean Paul LuVanVi and Peter Nicolas, that possibility has come to fruition, albeit with its own spin. “We love the rich history of Santa Barbara and also the intimacy,” says Recher. “This is also why we are building on strong relationships with local farmers, vineyards, and suppliers.” The food is Mediterranean French with a local flair, using seasonal ingredients in dishes such as black olive tapenade-crusted rack of lamb with a madeira, smoked garlic, and goat cheese sauce ($38) or spicy steamed black mussels with North African Ras el Hanout broth ($20). The restaurant is known for its romantic ambience at dinnertime, yet afterward, brings on a loungelike vibe that incorporates music and visuals by artist Edouard Chimot. 129 E. What started as a “collaboration of a neighborhood (the Mesa) of devoted supporters and investors” has turned into the spot where foodies and families have been lining up outside to order handmade items such as the Montecito ($12)—a beef patty with griddled goat cheese, bourbon-glazed mushrooms, an onion ring, truffle aioli, arugula, and grilled onions. “We offer something for everyone—from gourmet, handcrafted burgers to farm-fresh salads and healthy, delicious kids’ meals,” Cora says of the industrial-chic burger joint. “Plus, we have a selection of turkey, chicken, fish, and vegan/vegetarian sandwiches all served on locally baked brioche or gluten-free buns.” 315 Meigs Rd., Santa Barbara, 805-963-7492. Now with executive chef Marco Fossati on board, the FOUR SEASONS RESORT BILTMORE has the only kitchen in Santa Barbara—and one of only about a dozen in all of California—that’s licensed to cure its own meats. The two-month process involves salts, sugars, bacteria cultures, and a converted climatecontrolled wine locker—“Wine fridges have the correct temperature, just like a cellar,” says Fossati. Under the direction of banquet chef Chris Shertzer, the meat-curing program has allowed the Biltmore’s charcuterie offerings to flourish, with standard items like bresaola, coppa, lonzino, and soppressata in addition to specialties such as a cacciatorini made with Telegraph Brewing Company’s 1912 Biltmore Ale. The selections have a starring role in the Bella Vista Restaurant’s antipasto platter as well as its legendary Sunday brunch. 1260 Channel Dr., Montecito, 805-

Arts MOORE is MORE “It’s one of the most important pieces of architecture in Santa Barbara County, and architects from all over the world make pilgrimages to it and pay tribute to it,” says Dennis Whelan, UC Santa Barbara’s associate campus architect, about the university’s recently renovated THE CLUB & GUEST HOUSE , an icon of postmodern architecture. The faculty club building, known for its spectacular lagoon and ocean views, was built in 1968 and designed by world-renowned architect Charles Moore (1925-1993) and associate William Turnbull (1935-1997). Moore—a charismatic figure who was relentlessly peripatetic (he taught at several universities and was dean of Yale’s architecture school)—was a leading practitioner of postmodern architecture and an inspired choice for the (then) nascent faculty members at UCSB. “This was an experiment,” Whelan says, “as to what could denote a place of its time and what this assembly of spaces would do for them as a young faculty.” Indeed, the faculty club was unlike any other

building on campus, with its zigzag of geometric planes (walls with cutouts and open upper levels) resulting in a theatrical play of light accentuated by colorful banners rendered in neon tubing (a pop art version of heraldic crests adopted by Ivy League schools), not to mention the ancient artifacts (medieval stone fireplace surrounds and Islamic carved wood ceilings) culled from the estate of William Randolph Hearst playfully positioned throughout. The recent extensive renovation—appropriately helmed by current members of Moore’s firm Moore Ruble Yudell—respects Moore’s spirit and retains critical elements of the original design, neon banners included. As Whelan notes, “The building now reflects the maturity of the faculty.” Bldg. 581, University of California, Santa Barbara, 805-8937000. L . D . P O R T E R

There’s a tender, poignant quality to VIRGINIA MCCRACKEN ’s boxed vignettes. The self-taught Santa Barbara-based artist creates small worlds inhabited by tiny papier-mâché creatures who possess distinctive personalities. “People react to them very emotionally,” says McCracken, “they laugh, often. I’ve had people cry. There’s a sentiment attached to them.” The ability to provoke heartfelt reactions through her art may be the result of McCracken’s former background in psychology; she spent 25 years as a licensed therapist. Some of McCracken’s creatures sport elaborate outfits, a testament to the artist’s abiding interest in fashion. “I’ve always loved fashion and clothes,” she says. “If I don’t put clothes on them I feel as if they’re exposed and vulnerable.” Enthusiasm for McCracken’s work is widespread—she’s represented in Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Hope Floats As Carpinteria-based writer Kate Merrick makes her way back toward laughter and life, she shares her journey in her honest new book, AND STILL SHE LAUGHS: DEFIANT JOY IN THE DEPTHS OF SUFFERING (Nelson Books, $16.99). Here, she weaves together stories of three resilient, biblical women with her own experiences of losing a child, her 8-year-old daughter, Daisy, revealing the emotions, surprising joy, and deep hope in the midst of heartache. Merrick—wife of local pastor Britt Merrick (son of surfboard shaper Al Merrick)—opens her heart, wanting readers “to know that suffering isn’t to be feared,” but rather that we “should all feel the freedom to cry and laugh.” COURTNEY JONES

The oversize image that greets visitors to “David Wiesner & the Art of Wordless Storytelling” at the SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF ART shows a boy reading, suspended among trees above his room. It’s a tribute to the way picture books—in particular, the works of this award-winning artist/author—open the imagination to incredible new worlds. The 70 watercolors on display until May 14 come from the 10 books Wiesner has written and illustrated himself: There’s a sky filled with Brussels sprouts from June 29, 1999, ominous toads from Tuesday, and pigs that escape from other storybooks in The Three Pigs, among others. There’s also art from Spot, a tablet app that allows viewers to explore interconnected fantastical universes, and from Wiesner’s new Fish Girl, a graphic novel about a mermaid who turns into a young woman as she ventures beyond her aquarium home. What’s important about a wordless story, says Wiesner, is that “everyone can tell it in their own voice. There’s no wrong way to read it.” 1130 State St., Santa Barbara, 805-963-4364. As a fourth-generation Californian, Marilyn Brant Chandler DeYoung should have included herself when writing REMARKABLE WOMEN OF CALIFORNIA ($35, Dream City, available at Chaucer’s Bookstore, 805-682-6787, chaucersbooks .com)—an insightful overview of women who shaped California’s history (including Isadora Duncan, Sybil Morse Brand, Amelia Earhart, and Helen Gahagan Douglas). In RADICAL BODIES: ANNA HALPRIN, SIMONE FORTI, AND YVONNE RAINER IN CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK, 1955-1972 ($55, University of California Press, available at Tecolote Book Shop, 805-969-4977, tecolotebookshop .com), UC Santa Barbara professors

Ninotchka Bennahum and Bruce Robertson team up with dance aficionado Wendy Perron to highlight the work of three daring innovators whose contributions continue to influence the dance world. Floral designer (and recent Ojai transplant) Louesa Roebuck’s genius for transforming foraged materials into glorious assemblages is lovingly revealed in FORAGED FLORA: A YEAR OF GATHERING AND ARRANGING WILD PLANTS AND FLOWERS ($40, Ten Speed Press, available at Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, 805-565-1502, upstairsatpierrelafond.com). Don’t miss a workshop discussing how foraging and gleaning work with current soil, watershed, and local organic food movements before a book signing ($85, including a signed copy of the book) with Roebuck at Upstairs at Pierre Lafond on April 9 from 1 to 5 pm. These days, the welcome to the FOUR SEASONS RESORT LANAI begins before guests ever set foot on that Hawaiian island with the relaxed elegance of the hotel’s luxe lounge at the Honolulu airport. It’s another aspect of the attentive sophistication of the ocean-side resort, which reopened in February after substantial renovations. Located on a bluff overlooking the protected waters of Hulopoe Bay, the Four Seasons’ 213 rooms and suites now reflect the lush tropical ambiance, with teak and zebra wood accents surrounding furnishings of rosewood, leather, and linen in a calming neutral palette. Dining choices range from the contemporary Japanese cuisine of Nobu Lanai to the Hawaiian seafood and steak dishes of One Forty (named for the square mileage of the comma-shaped isle), while the lobby lounge offers the perfect spot to savor a sunset cocktail. And though Lanai’s varied terrain beckons adventurers with end-of-the-road beaches, dirt roads for four-wheel drive exploring, upcountry horse and hiking trails, and otherworldly volcanic rock formations, the most satisfying activity may simply be giving in to the island atmosphere and doing nothing at all. Rates: From $1,150/night. 808-565-2000. J O A N T A P P E R F O UR S E A S O N S .CO M / L A N A I

Cruise to Catalina

A quick 75-minute high-speed ferry ride across the Pacific on the Catalina Express, catalinaexpress.com, CATALINA ISLAND has been a beloved getaway for Hollywood and Southern California since 1919 when William Wrigley Jr. purchased the majority of the shares of the land. Now, the Wrigley-Rusack family (also residents of Santa Barbara) has updated the charming isle while keeping a focus on the history.

Where to Stay The recently renovated PAVILION HOTEL sits nearly right on the sand of Avalon Harbor. A highlight: Relaxing around the fire pit in the early evening with complimentary wine and cheese.

A Regal Coastal Experience

Sea greens, ocean blues, and serene whites set the palette for the $40 million renovation of MONARCH BEACH RESORT , which made its debut last summer in Dana Point, an hour south of Los Angeles. The sophisticated 400-room hotel has drawn on its ocean-side setting for inspiration and views not only in its accommodations but also in its restaurants—from a welcoming lobby lounge and contemporary tavern fare to Mediterranean farm-to-table cuisine and elegant Pacific Rim dining. Especially noteworthy is the addition of the Miraval Life in Balance Spa, with 24 rooms and more than 70 signature treatments, including offerings based on the coastal setting such as Sea Salt Serenity ($375). Said a recent guest (an aficionado of the Miraval flagship in Arizona): “The spa was beautiful and serene and to have the concept closer to home is amazing. Also the new designs in the rooms and lobby are fabulous.” Rates: From $374/ night. 800-722-1543. J . T . M ONARCHBEACHRES ORT.C O M

A COLLECTION OF HATS picked up from various vacations hangs above a vintage bench. Previous pages: The front view of the FRENCH NORMANDY home.

After two years away for work in San Francisco, Alina and Bernardo de Albergaria were eager to return to Santa Barbara with their three kids. Before moving to the Bay Area, they’d sold their beloved Upper Eastside home and wanted to find something with as much heart, soul, and history. The couple shares a storied past of living in historic areas from the Venezuelan Andes to Bath, England, to Rome, where Bernardo grew up next to the Spanish Steps. So when their realtor showed them not one but four George

Washington Smith homes, they found a star along the American Riviera in a 1928 French Normandy ocean-view abode. “Because I spent nearly a decade of my youth in South America and Europe, I’ve always had a strong predilection for Spanish colonial and Old World architecture,” Alina says. “George Washington Smith houses seemed like a natural fit, and while I can’t say we knew we would live in one, they have always been at the top of our dream list.” This 5,700-square-foot two-story white-stucco

home boasts dramatic rooflines and is dotted with original peekaboo windows painted the classic Santa Barbara green. French doors open up to a back patio with century-old olive trees overlooking the ocean. The previous owners recreated the gardens in the spirit of Lockwood de Forest—the property’s original landscape architect—with hedges, roses, lavender, magnolias, and espaliered lemon trees. For the interiors, Alina lightened everything, turning the “basketball orange” wood floors to a light, beachy stain and painting the walls and beams white. As a jewelry designer and founder of Designs by Alina, she used her same method of mixing materials to juxtapose the soft and romantic with dark, rugged textures. Just as a statement necklace of hers melds hand-worked leather with pale, brilliant pavé diamonds, her dining room pairs dark hides on white floors and white seats with shiny black lacquer. “Whether I am designing a piece of jewelry or a living space, I am drawn to unconventional blends,” she says. “Combining diamonds and pearls with leather, for example, is as natural to me as infusing heirloom furnishings with modern pieces.” New and old is at every turn with generations of art and furniture woven into their home, hinting at all the scenes of their lives. Upstairs, photographs of the kids—twins Dario and Gisella (14) and daughter Tessalina (10)—are printed on stainless steel and chronicle their travels to Argentina, Morocco, Spain,

and New York. In the sitting room, an old tapestry from Bernardo’s childhood home hangs near blackand-white photos of his mother modeling in the late 1950s. “Not only was I surrounded by architectural gems at literally every corner in the neighborhood, but my mother was also an avid antiques collector,” says Bernardo, a tech executive. “We still have pieces from my family homes in Rome and Portugal and we’re now able to marry old European pieces with this amazing example of New World history.” Having taken the director’s seat for the interior design, Alina made sure their house is a real representation to who they are and how they live. “When I set out to design a space, I begin by trying to imagine how life would unfold in it. Our lifestyle is very relaxed, so even though we have antique pieces, which would look quite formal in another setting, we make certain that they reflect us,” she says. Enter the craze of life with two teens, a preteen, two dogs, and multiple languages being chattered around the dinner table. Any formality in furniture gives way to impromptu pool parties, a rowdy garageturned-game room with a Roman-themed wall mural, cocktails with friends on the deck, and neighborhood spins in the Fiat. On weekends, they pile into the book-lined library and light a roaring fire for family movie night. In effort to keep this room free of TVs

Over the years, and many moves later, they’ve always named each house Casa Ventalia—a marriage of “Venezuela” and “Italia.” However Alina’s mother prefers Villa Alegria, which means “Happy Villa” because she says that everyone in it is always happy. Adds Alina: “A home to me is like a character in the movie of our lives, one that mirrors the personalities of the very people it embraces.” ●

“Working with flowers is in my blood,” says Carter, who once worked as a floral designer and whose affinity for plants dates to her childhood spent visiting a grand Montecito estate where her grandparents lived as caretakers. (“There were secret gardens and flowers everywhere,” she remembers.) The flower images in her paintings are created from memory. Inspired by Mexican retablos, Carter often paints on tin, and her brilliantly hued work has an endearing folk art quality. ERIKACARTERART.CO M

Erb’s luminous photographs of flowers often appear otherworldly, which seems to mirror her artistic process: “I spend the most time searching for glimpses of a thing’s divine essence,” she says. “When I am successful, the result is not just an image, but a feeling and a reminder that the magic always happens in the present.” Entirely self-taught, the Tennessee native spends her summers in Santa Barbara, viewing its gardens and terrain through her camera lens. In her Invasive Species paintings, Gottlieb alters existing print plates from the John James Audubon archive, binding and adorning the magnificent birds with equally magnificent botanicals. But beauty has its cost: Audubon killed numerous birds in his quest to portray them, and the botanicals overlaid by Gottlieb are invasive species that pose dangerous threats to native ecosystems. “The paintings self-consciously draw attention to both the invasive attitudes of human annexation and to the ecological crisis of invasive species,” says Gottlieb.

“What I try to find is something in the flower where you see the inner soul, the inner beauty,” says Gerard, a classically trained artist who applies Old World oilpainting techniques to create large-scale, thoroughly modern still-life paintings. Working with oil paint on wood, O’Neill favors succulents as painting subjects due to their sculptural quality and vivid, pure colors. “I’ve been a bit obsessed with succulents,” she admits, “there’s something really strong about them.” Indeed, O’Neill’s larger-than-life portraits of these botanical beauties have a bold, tactile quality. WRITE ON

Top to bottom: EUDORA WELTY , BUDD SCHULBERG , ALEX HALEY , and WILLIAM BUCKLEY were just a few of

the NOTED LITERATI who imparted wit and wisdom to the attendees at the SANTA BARBARA WRITERS CONFERENCE .

The date was June 22, 1972. The place was Cate School in Carpinteria. And writer/artist/restaurateur/raconteur Barnaby Conrad was welcoming the first students to the opening of the weeklong Santa Barbara Writers Conference. Among the speakers that inaugural year were Ray Bradbury, Ross Macdonald, Budd Schulberg, and Jessica “Decca” Mitford—literary notables that Conrad had brought together thanks to his wide-ranging friendships and the force of his larger-than-life personality. It was an auspicious beginning. Conrad, with his wife, Mary, went on to run the conference for 32 years, inviting such famous figures as Charles “Sparky” Schulz, Elmore Leonard, Eudora Welty, Julia Child, Alex Haley, Joan Didion, Artie Shaw, Amy Tan, and scores of others who inspired generations of writers—

bums, video, and audiotapes that Mary had safeguarded. “I had pictures and press—everything, including the parties,” she says, adding that she wanted to “have people know that this happened in Santa Barbara.” The three collaborators worked on the project for a year and a half, organizing the book chronologically and trying to catch the essence of each annual conference. Each chapter is a kind of time capsule, highlighting world events, listing the hot books of the season, and recounting the speakers’ public presentations as well as behind-the-scenes events in the workshops and late-night “pirate” sessions. So there is William Styron in 1980, talking about how he came to write Sophie’s Choice and Elmore Leonard in 1996, discussing how his book Get Shorty was being transferred to the silver screen. Ray Bradbury gave the keynote address from the first year on, and Charles “Sparky” Schulz was a perennial participant, as Snoopy became the conference logo. For most of the first three decades, SBWC took place at the Miramar Hotel, and that resort’s comfortably bohemian atmosphere added to the informality and accessibility for which the conference is famous. “There’s a wonderful rubbing of elbows,” says Mary. “We’re all writers and peers,” adds Pallamary. “There’s no ‘us’ and ‘them.’” That feeling permeates the documentary movie that has grown out of the scrapbook project. Suggested by Lisa Angle, the director of Literary Gumbo, the film is a collaboration between Mystic Ink and Ninety Degrees Media. It blends archival clips and photos with recent interviews with conference speakers and workshop leaders who pay homage to Barnaby Conrad and pinpoint the encouragement and mentorship they experienced. Among them is Fannie Flagg, who started out decades ago as a participant and aspiring writer, based her first novel on a short story written at the conference, and has gone on to many best sellers and multiple appearances at SBWC as a speaker. “I went there with trepidation in 1975,” she remembers, “and because I had so much encouragement, that gave me the confidence to start a whole new career. Ten books later I’m ready to retire!” Flagg will return to give the opening address at this year’s conference, to be held June 18 through 23 at

Since 2010, Charles Schulz’s son, Monte, has owned SBWC and he is keeping the conference true to its roots. “Our great asset,” says conference director Grace Rachow, “is our rich history and the fact that it feels like a family.” Speakers often return as teachers, including this year’s new workshop leaders Jervey Tervalon and Gar Anthony Haywood. “Writers are solitary creatures,” Rachow adds. “It’s hard to know if you’re good. JEANNETTE HAWES and CHRISTOPHER HAHN ’s lush Ganna Walska Lotusland wedding—produced and designed by Merryl Brown Events—seems as though it was plucked straight from a fairy tale. Following a serendipitous first meeting three years prior, Jeannette and Chris were married in a ceremony that included the mixing of gold and white sand, poetry and prayer, music by the Santa Barbara String Quartet, a reading from Corinthians, and a performance of “Bridge over Troubled Water.” The eight-foot train of Jeannette’s Sottero and Midgley wedding dress trailed dreamily behind her as she walked down the aisle toward three striking gothic arches crafted from white flowers by Mark’s Garden. Bursts of vibrant color—spectacular centerpieces of roses and orchids in shades of deep purple— appeared at the topiary garden reception. Crystal-cut glassware and 19th-century silver from Small Masterpiece, silk napkins, and gold-embossed menus at each place setting created the impression of a formal French château. While departing the celebration on their tandem bicycle, Jeannette’s petticoat got snagged and tore off. “It was so funny!” she says, “like a scene from a movie.” K A T H R Y N P A T R I C K

Ojai native and heritor to the town’s beloved Earthtrine Farms, LEIF DAUTCH married Marin County local BRITTANY PETERSON at the farm itself, amid more than 200 friends and family. The theme of the wedding, fittingly, was “farmal,” melding farm with formal. The ceremony was set against stunning views of the Ojai backcountry and was marked by poetic vows and a serenade on the fiddle by the groom. Cocktail hour, a graceful tented outdoor reception, and late-night dancing followed. Leif, a deputy attorney general at the California Department of Justice, and Brittany, a sports marketing manager, left a day after their wedding for two weeks in the Seychelles and Kenya before returning home to San Francisco. Courtly Romance

After a day spent wine tasting, KATIE CLEMENTS and BRANDT HILL tied the knot at a small, casual wedding party with friends and family from all over the country. The two met in law school and dated for more than four years before Brandt’s fireside proposal in a small, snowy cabin in the Vermont countryside. The two were married at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse by Brandt’s father, a superior court judge, in a ceremony that Katie described as “the perfect mix of our personalities, with humor and love.” Their nuptials embraced the late-summer atmosphere with florals in shades of peach, rust, ivory, and light gold. The bride found her Martina Liana open-backed lace ivory dress from her close friend and college roommate’s Birmingham, Alabama, bridal boutique Ivory & White. Following a reception at the Wine Cask, the couple spent their honeymoon wining, dining, and relaxing at Lake Como. K . P .

College sweethearts EVA SITU and TOMMY KIM dated for 11 years before exchanging vows in a small ceremony influenced by the couple’s Chinese and Korean cultures and produced by Michel B. Events at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. The bride’s gown was offset by pieces passed down from both sides of the couple’s family: her engagement ring was reset with a diamond from her new mother-in-law’s ring and accompanied by earrings and necklace to match, along with a jade necklace gifted by Eva’s grandmother. For the reception, guests gathered at The Lark and dined under a canopy of flowers and greenery cascading from the ceiling’s rustic wooden beams. The family-style menu brought in seasonal local ingredients, and blooms and fresh berries in rich, romantic tones decorated a tiered cake from Lelé Pâtisserie. Though their ultimate honeymoon goal is Japan, the couple enjoyed a short postwedding trip to Portland, Oregon. K . P .

Viva La! CAROLINA KOEPENICK was only 17 when she first met HUGH MONTGOMERY IV , but it wasn’t until the Santa Barbara natives crossed paths a few years later that they started dating. Just six months later, Hugh proposed to Carolina at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church—her favorite hometown spot—with a custom platinum and diamond ring that he helped design. The couple exchanged vows at the bride’s family’s Montecito home in iconic Santa Barbara style: with a fiesta-themed wedding. Guests were treated to a festive fete replete with a mariachi band, a churro-flavored cake from Crushcakes, and two miniature donkeys that carried flowers (and libations) in their sidesaddles. After Hugh’s friends jokingly tossed him into the pool, the newlyweds dried off with three relaxing nights at the Bacara Resort & Spa. T A Y L O R M A S K E T

From the moment JONATHAN BLACK first smiled at VERONICA TAYLOR on a sidewalk in Silverlake, Los Angeles, she was smitten. “I brazenly asked, ‘Do you have a girlfriend?’” Veronica remembers. Following a romance marked by time spent strolling and sunning in Santa Barbara, the couple returned to the Four Seasons Resort Biltmore to say “I do.” The ceremony was inspired by Audrey Hepburn—elegant, simple, and classic, with all-white flowers and a retro ambiance. Veronica floated down the aisle to the tune of the Beach Boys’s “God Only Knows” in an ethereal chiffon gown designed by her personal friend Oday Shakar. After being surprised by confetti cannons that were fired as the two were pronounced man and wife, 150 guests poured into Tydes Restaurant for sunset cocktails followed by dinner and dancing in La Pacifica Ballroom. For their honeymoon, the couple jetted off to Costa Rica to soak up some rays on the beaches of Nosara. K . P .

VOWS in the Valley Against a backdrop of rolling hills, Demetria Estate is the rustic Los Olivos vineyard where SOPHIA ZAHOUDANIS married ANDREW KINELL . After eight years of dating, Andrew knelt on the beach in Nantucket and presented Sophia with an exquisite emerald-cut diamond. “I’ll never forget the way it caught the light that evening,” says Sophia. Inspired by the stunning landscape of her family’s vineyard, Sophia wanted the wedding to be simple, natural, and organic. The bride wore a minimalist Vera Wang gown, and floral arrangements incorporated native blooms such as olive, sage, eucalyptus, rosemary, bay, and white Majolica roses. In an intimate ceremony, the bride and groom read personalized vows to one another and exchanged honey (a Persian tradition) to signify a sweet life together. After zipping off in a vintage Range Rover, the couple spent two weeks traveling along the western coastline of Corsica. K . P .

Padaro Beach was the site of LAUREN MCEWEN and JONATHAN BRYSON ’s summertime nuptials. The bride (an alumna of Crane Country Day and Cate schools) and groom were married at the bride’s family’s 1940s beach house in a vibrant and memorable celebration. “We wanted a casual wedding,” says Lauren. “Needless to say, the event was the best day ever for us—we were surrounded by our favorite people, in our favorite place, with our favorite food and drinks (lots of them!), and one heck of a dance party.” The couple, who wed after dating since 2009, called on Soigné Productions to see their vision through. The two enjoyed a private oceanfront ceremony among friends and family followed by a dinner of Mexican fare by Jessica Knight Catering—complete with margaritas, an authentic taco bar, and an array Continued on page 169 of traditional desserts. Rent the AISLE

No more stress on you or your pocketbook when it comes to looking for your next “guest of the…” wedding weekend wardrobe. ARMARIUM , a new luxury online on-loan designer concept, makes it as easy as four steps to rent current season looks—think brands such as Marchesa, Carolina Herrera, Etro, Monique Lhuillier, Missoni, and more—for a fraction of the retail price. Find your look by browsing through the styles organized by occasion or brand, chat with a stylist for fit suggestions (they even allow temporary alterations), keep your look for up to four days, then an easy return with provided packaging—and they even handle the dry cleaning. “Santa Barbara is legendary for producing some of the most iconic wedding backdrops with its effortless elegance,” says cofounder and CEO Trisha Gregory. “We find that many clients attending destination weddings wish to match their wardrobe to the destination. Also, what’s worn to weddings is oftentimes hard to rewear due to social media. That’s where we come in—allowing clients to mix up their wardrobe, experiment with new brands and trends, and truly nail the art of destination dressing you’ll only wear once.” G I N A T O L L E S O N

Here, Steinem told personal stories, spoke on the importance of people coming together, and answered questions, addressing the crowd: “Just do what you can; we are powerful.”

Metallics sparkled as 400 guests toasted at the Coral Casino to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the PACIFIC PRIDE FOUNDATION . This was the fifth Royal Ball, now a biannual event, done by Merryl Brown Events and Percy Sales, designed by Rrivre Works. The Four Seasons Resort Biltmore catered a lively menu, which included a macaroni & cheese bar, mini burgers, and LGBTQ (lettuce, guacamole, bacon, tomato, and queso) sandwiches. Entertainment included flamenco, go-go dancers, and a silent auction of Tiffany & Co. rings and vacations, which raised money for the foundation’s advocacy programs and services.

Must be a DREAM

JESSICA FRIEDMAN was walking her dog, Jasper, while visiting her family in Santa Barbara when ALEXANDER TRUITT —who was supposed to be in New York—snuck

out to California and surprised Jess with a proposal at her favorite spot on Miramar Beach. With beloved Jasper as their ring-bearer, the bride and groom’s personalized wedding ceremony also incorporated both Jewish and Balinese touches. Held in the backyard of the Montecito home where Jessica grew up, the wedding welcomed guests with mountain views—in a setting alight with lanterns and natural greenery. K . P .

For HAL CONKLIN and HALEY MCGUIRE , the most memorable moment of their wedding was “seeing our children and grandchildren so happy,” says Hal. A former mayor of Santa Barbara, Hal dated Haley for 22 years before tying the knot at an intimate family ceremony at Westmont College. In place of bridesmaids or groomsmen, the couple’s seven children surrounded them as they walked down the aisle. Says Hal: “Now we are one big happy family.” K . P .
