from the

Editor In Santa Barbara we’re blessed with fall weather that allows us to brunch outside, wear sleeveless dresses, and enjoy palm trees that don’t lose all their leaves. Our September issue celebrates the best ways to take advantage of this marvelous California season!

And the jewelry from the cover that you immediately added to your fall must-have list? Get to know the designer in A Little Q&A with Sheryl Lowe. We chat about her favorite spots in Santa Barbara and her stunning collections inspired by her recent travels!

In just a few pages you can join us for a beautiful, leisurely Sunday brunch overlooking Santa Barbara at Belmond El Encanto. In Munch on Brunch everything from the appetizer platter to the dessert is truly as delicious as it is equisite. Then meet the self-proclaimed (and rightfully so!) culinary genius who created this phenomenal menu!

For Express Your Equestrian we made our way to Solvang and the gorgeous grounds of Whispering Rose Ranch where America’s Next Top Model Cycle 19 winner, Laura James, spent a romantic afternoon in classic fall fashion looks.

In Lost In Lotusland we showcase flowing dresses throughout the whimsical gardens of Lotusland. Though atypical of fall fashion, these gowns are perfect for September in Santa Barbara. Through the Gates offers a look at the fascinating background of the unique gardens nestled in Montecito. Its natural beauty is unlike anything else in the American Riviera!

Finally, we fill you in on the secrets to looking exactly like our August cover model! Just kidding, but the super talented hair and makeup team from José Eber Salon take you step-by-step to get her sexy, beachy look! Fall into a world of luxury with us and we’ll keep bringing you pages of the most splendid indulgences of Santa Barbara!

ith summer coming to a close, having brunch on an open deck accompanied by a breathtaking view was naturally one of our main priorities. And although Santa Barbara weather is always perfect for a Sunday afternoon brunch al fresco, we really just needed an excuse to try Executive Chef Leo Andres Ayala’s delicious Bellini Brunch at the newly remodeled Belmond El Encanto.

njoying bottomless Bellinis at one of the most beautiful hotels atop the famous “American Riviera” is no easy feat—after all, how can one possibly save room for dessert when they are devouring an array of appetizers (six to be exact)! Loaded with ahi tuna salad, chilled prawns, marinated berries, and smoked salmon, the appetizer tray will leave you beyond satisfied.

French toast, steak and eggs, buttermilk pancakes, roasted chicken breast, ahi tuna sandwich or a classic cobb. Let’s just say it was an ambitious task, but we managed to fill our plates with delectable sweets from the dessert buffet, including the New York cheesecake (a classic and my all time favorite!) and the floating island, while loving every minute of it!

“I think it was just natural for me to come in the kitchen and start cooking.” But don’t get too comfortable, there’s more! To continue the feast, diners will choose from several exquisite options including eggs benedict, roasted salmon, brioche

While relishing Chef Ayala’s mouthwatering creations, we couldn’t help but wonder how this amazing menu came to be or who this elusive man was. Luckily for us,

we were fortunate enough to sit down with the culinary genius himself and talk inspirations, his love for seafood, and what it’s like working at the first FiveStar hotel in Santa Barbara! I read that you are from Guerrero, Mexico— being Hispanic, there is this inherent love for food imbedded within your culture; would you say that this is what inspired you to be a chef? “Yes, because when I was little, my parents owned a restaurant by the ocean (in Acapulco, Mexico), so I was always involved — helping them craft dishes for the menu, helping them cook, and doing fun things with it.”

You became a certified oyster and lobster fisherman at the age of fifteen, and even went on to own your own shop at one point. Your resume is rather impressive; you have worked for the Four Seasons Newport Beach, the Five Diamond Belvedere restaurant at the Forbes Five-Star Peninsula Beverly Hills, Montage Beverly Hills and the list goes on. Did you have schooling or are you just some kind of culinary genius? “I am just a genius, basically (laughs). It just comes natural to me because my parents owned a restaurant with beautiful flavors that people really enjoyed. I think it was just natural for me to come in the kitchen and start cooking.”
