Star filled skies and vibrant activewear rise above Joshua Tree National Park.

20 | JANUARY 2015

A

few weeks ago we let several of our staff members explore Joshua Tree National Park for themselves; the result was a culmination of adventure, wonder, beauty, surprise, and a nice dose of amazement. We were so excited with the experience that we had to return for a second helping of fun. On our subsequent trip we reaffirmed an already heightened appreciation for the park and undertook an activewear shoot. We hope that this month’s travel feature will inspire you to discover the park and the surrounding area for yourself – or at least encourage the exploration of vibrant colored clothing.

I’m anchored to a grove of Joshua Trees, a blanket of clouds dilutes the star filled sky. I set out with every intention of stargazing, but the diffusion in the night sky has my attention enthralled with the form and shape of the canopy of silhouetted Joshua trees that surround me. They vary greatly in size and you’d be hard pressed to find two that are similar. Many of them contort their limbs, not like one would imagine but in absurd and unorthodox directions. These trees seem as if they were created from the pen of a fiction writer. I’ve come to the conclusion that if Dr. Seuss created a National Park it would have been Joshua Tree National Park, but he would have left out the park rangers. I will back this statement up with the simple fact that park rangers have one of the best, if not the best, jobs in the world but they act as if they’re the most mistreated and underappreciated people in all the land. I will say no more about park rangers. All national parks are unique in some

capacity, but of all the parks I feel Joshua Tree is the least like its counterparts. From the dangerously captivating rock piles, that take on majestic forms and sometimes seem to have hollowed out features, to trees that have a fictional quality, just looking at this place makes my mind wander. Once I begin to interact with the elements I start to understand so much more of what makes this park special. Within the park boundaries exist two distinct desert ecosystems, the higher and cooler Mojave Desert and the lower and warmer Colorado Desert. My first evening is spent as far west as you can go in the park. It was brisk, but the aesthetic quality of the nightscape was more than worth the cool temperatures.

s I move eastward on the park road I see that Joshua trees define much of the landscape. They pop up in dense groves that seem to hover over and around everything, including the road by which I’m driving. Further down the road they begin to stand as isolated icons on a landscape that’s beginning to open up and reveal itself as a more traditional desert. To go along with these otherworldly trees are captivating geologic formations that stand in roadside piles, at Skull Rock I’m informed by a traveler that the western region of the park has some of the most popular geologic formations in all of California. The man goes on to explain that of the over 1 million annual visitors who explore the park, the vast majority come for the clusters of rock. In my mind I’m rechristening the area Rock Pile National Park; I don’t think the name will stick. My geologic interest may be one of the most superficial things about me; the vast majority of my fascination resides in appearance. The variety of lateral towers, rounded boulders, small archways, and unusually familiar egg shapes all have me enthralled. I can’t help but

24 | JANUARY 2015

get out of the car at every pull off and inspect each segment of rocks. I’m fascinated to find that opposing sides of the same cluster have entirely different appearances. One side looks like lateral outcroppings while the other shows rounded buttresses with car-sized holes situated randomly. There seems to be no limit to the variety or variation in scale. Approaching a busy parking lot, I see a classroom of rock climbers. Earlier at Skull Rock my park educator informed me that over 4,500 established climbing routes lay within the park boundary. After observing amateurs and experienced climbers alike I can’t help but jump on a boulder field and start hiking upward. My initial goal is simple; scurry upward until I see something interesting. At first I work my way unconcerned with much other than what’s immediately in front of me. Unexpectedly something above me is on the ridgeline, juxtaposed against the natural line of the earth, but in the same moment it’s gone. I shake the feeling of Bigfoot off and try to continue hiking, but instinctually my eyes gravitate upwards. Only a few steps later I stop and observe the outline of three big horn sheep. Instantly my hiking cadence increases and my purpose is defined. Up I climb.

When I crest the field of rocks, to my surprise I see a menagerie of sheep, some at eye level, while others have moved downwards at a leisurely pace. I move forward cautiously, hoping to further bridge the space between animal and hiker. I begin stopping at random intervals to fully appreciate the movement and number of animals, feeling as if each moment will be my last before these beasts run into the abyss of rocks. If you have ever observed a talented rock climber you will have seen a fragment of the traversing ability and confidence of big horn sheep. They’re instinctually and physically the perfect image of what should exist in a rocky environment. Each movement done without hesitation, each leap and step seems to defy gravity, but for them is nothing more than a simple movement forward. They rarely, if ever, look down and will stop on what seems the slickest of slopes to scratch their nose or complete a lazy yawn.

W

ith no forewarning, as if signaled from a communication system that belongs only to them, the sheep become more relaxed. My stationary and somewhat unlikely position, both below and above various sheep, allows me to observe them as they settle into what I assume is normal behavior. Foraging on trees and plants, stretching well-used limbs, and lackadaisical squats all belong to their many routines. By now my presence has been accepted and as they begin to wander deeper into the rocks my pursuit ends. When the last sheep ducks out of sight I take in the panoramic view before me and embrace the reality of what I’ve just experienced. As I return to my car I’m completely humbled to have witnessed these incredible animals and for a moment, maybe just a brief one, been a companion to them on their daily triumph over immense fields of rocks and boulders. Back on the road, the transition from the upper desert to the lower happens gradually but once you drop below 3,000 feet there is a noticeable change in the habitat. Creosote bush, ocotillo, yucca, and cholla all define this segment of the land. Captivating natural clusters of each spring up throughout various areas of the eastern side of the park. One of the most eye-catching is the cholla cactus garden. Growing in a dense grove that erupts as a yellow swath in the landscape, imagine a segment of land covered in a dense bundle of fuzzy yellow plants. Sometimes called the teddy bear cholla, the fuzzy exterior looks delicate but in reality contains dangerous barbed spines. The cholla’s neighbor, the ocotillo bush, blooms in spring, summer, or fall, depending on rain. The long stalks of the bush seem to transmute gravity, arching both upwards and outward like a flexible gymnast. Wide spread vistas and open views reveal sandy soil grasslands and desert dunes. These views are contrasted by five distinct oases that thrive in the eastern end of the park. They are heavily trafficked by not only visitors but also wildlife. An assortment of migratory birds, including Golden Eagle, Road Runner, and Gambell’s Quail, are known to dip their wings within this boundary. These lush areas also boast the only native California palm, the fan palm.

Before long my route begins to near its end and the light in the sky begins to fade. I retrace my way back through the park to one of my favorite rock piles. I spend the night at Jumbo Rocks campground. I like how the campsites are situated—every one seems to have its own cluster of boulders. Even with the sites around me being occupied I still have plenty of privacy. I use the rock formations surrounding my tent as grounds to scramble and climb, in my mind mimicking the movements of the climbers I observed earlier in the day. My time at Joshua Tree National Park has been two-part: one part graceful, mind-stimulating observation and one part wildlife adventure. In a matter of only two days I was able to escape the rigmarole of my day-to-day and find a good dose of outdoor fun. As I return to Santa Barbara my mind and body has been rejuvenated and I eagerly embrace the winter season and all its opportunities for local adventure.

Welcome to the ladies’ lounge. Couches are made for sinking into; the fireplace has been waiting for you; there’s fresh cucumber water; and the art is frame-after-frame of womanly charcoal life drawings. Amid our current revolution to resolve body ideals and elevate body image, it’s wonderfully authorizing to be surrounded by beauty in its simplest lines. I’ve slipped into a white robe (stashing my worldly belongings in the lovely locker room) and skipped the sandals to pad around my newfound sanctuary barefoot. The space is set up to perfectly cater to your me-time and girl-time alike, with a range of cushy chairs begging for a gossip session and fireside couches made for lounging. Looking out on rainy palm leaves and the empty pool, a sense of gratitude and quietude begins to build - and the day hasn’t even made it to the massage table. Bacara Spa treatments are a luxurious and lengthy list. Gaviota Herbal Therapy features herbal compresses of local organic herbs and salts, while prenatal massages are specialized for those in their second and third trimester. Sea Stone Therapy combines a traditional Swedish massage with cool and warm polished sea stones for ultimate relaxation, and if you want to literally take things to the next level, the Bacara Sea Breeze Rooftop Massage (or couples’ Soul to Soul Massage) comes with all-natural ocean breezes courtesy of the open-air rooftop terrace. Right on time I’m softly called out of the lounge and right into a dreamland of relaxation. The pick of the day is the Bacara Blend, one of 60 specialized spa treatments and services, a flexible option with opportunity for both gentle and deeper work, completely dependent on your personal preference. The treatment room’s music instates immediate Zen, there’s a beautifully garnished tray for your locker keys and cellphone, and the scented oils smell amazing. Cue 50 minutes of total tranquility and unstoppable unwinding. Highlights include every single minute. Additional highlights include focused deep tissue work on whatever area you’re holding your stress, awesome attention to the limbs, feet, and hands, which rarely get enough kneading, a hot towel foot wrap, and an unrivaled scalp massage. It has been a fluent, splendid dance between the hands of my lovely masseuse and the knots hiding throughout my body. Now, I am calm to the core.

...when you are sitting in a white robe next to a marble fireplace with a glass of champagne, you can know fully that you are taking the time to respect and value your own wellbeing.

As I wind down the cool stone staircase, the certainty that I am a vixen and a goddess rises out of my subconscious. Though somewhat surprised by this unprompted declaration, I am also completely certain of it. I feel downright empowered. If you’re a spa regular, this may come as no surprise; somewhere between charming valets taking care of my car, considerate umbrella placement, an indulgently comfortable hour, and complimentary Champagne (yes), I have become weightless – and all in a mid-week afternoon.

Lounging in the jacuzzi room, sounds of bubbling water and the eucalyptus steam room are a pure soundtrack to my pondering. I consider leaving (it has been awhile), but a powerful new force of Zen and very present state of mind ask why, so I stay, alternating between dips in the Jacuzzi, saunters in the redwood sauna, and tapping thoughts into Notes with a tiny, cucumber ice water-soaked towel, atop my head. It is all exceedingly revitalizing. Though often suggested, for the first time I am completely convinced that treating our bodies well by rejoicing in our own beauty and capabilities has the

power to refocus and refresh not only physically, but also emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually. And despite any kind of chaos revolving around you outside the ladies lounge, when you are sitting in a white robe next to a marble fireplace with a glass of Champagne, you can know fully that you are taking the time to respect and value your own well-being. My afternoon is certainly not an anomaly; imagine the consequences of a three-day spa weekend! Who runs the world? You know.

This new year, grant yourself permission to seek and access complete mind-bodyspirit well-being. While certainly luxurious, a full massage, body melt, or facial should not seem a frivolous indulgence. As vital as pushing yourself in your favorite cardio classes, eating well, and keeping up with local and global events, nourishing your only beautiful body is a decision to lead a productive, empowered, and gracious existence that cultivates your inner goddess. STYLE delivered Written by Alexandra Gonzalez

P

erhaps you’ve heard the name ADASA buzzing amongst some of the hottest local bloggers and Instagram beauties of the moment, and it’s for good reason. Santa Barbara’s very own online boutique marketplace carries all the luxury clothing lines we love - including Vince, Helmut Lang, and Alice + Olivia - from over 40 boutiques, with more to come! It’s no secret that online shopping is my favorite way to buy these days, and the team over at ADASA makes it oh-so-easy to press that cheeky little button labeled “Add to Bag” to land me in some potentially sticky business with the finite dimensions of my closet. Whether you’re in the market for some must-have accessories, the perfect pair of skinnies to keep that derriere perfectly situated (you know what we’re talking about!), or a chunky knit to keep you warm all winter long, ADASA has it all! And don’t be quick to write this online store off as your typical online shopping experience. Even more genius than one can begin to imagine, fashionistas all over the globe are rejoicing. I had the opportunity to pick the brilliant and business savvy brain of Gwen Jones, the fascinating force behind ADASA, to learn more about how she is revolutionizing modern online shopping.

ADASA.com has literally every designer and collection piece that I love. I noticed you are not an online clothing store, per say, because you partner with several boutiques across the country. Can you tell me a little about what ADASA is? You are quite right, ADASA is a boutique marketplace. We partner with the best independent women’s high-end contemporary boutiques in the country and in doing so provide online shoppers access to these special boutiques, and the designer collections they carry – all in one user-friendly online shopping destination. What is your vision for ADASA? Did you know you wanted it to be a marketplace for high-end boutiques? Our vision with ADASA is to create a truly unique shopping destination. We know that the best, and I mean the best, designer merchandise is held within America’s independent specialty boutiques. These boutiques, and their proprietors, are the lifeblood of the fashion industry. They set the trend by curating each and every designer collection they acquire for their local clientele, and as a result are the best places in the country to shop. That said, most of them don’t offer a compelling online store, and if so, are very small relative to other e-commerce destinations. With ADASA, we saw a tremendous opportunity to aggregate these amazing regional stores into one online boutique destination, providing customers the ability to literally shop America’s best independent boutiques all in one place.

...we saw a tremendous opportunity to aggregate these amazing regional stores into one online boutique shopping destination, providing customers the ability to literally shop America’s best independent boutiques all in one place.

Can you tell me a little about what the process of creating ADASA was like for you? Very exciting! And we are still creating it; we just launched ADASA this past summer. Already we have partnered with 45 boutiques across the country and, with a plan of integrating 200 additional top shops by the end of 2015! We have our work cut out for us. Fortunately we have an amazing team, fantastic partners, and customers who love to shop. How did you get started in the fashion industry? Well I love fashion! Seriously though, my background is operational and technical in nature, so as far as my entry into the fashion industry goes... I’d say it was through the back door. What do you look for when deciding which boutiques make the cut? It’s all about quality. We look at the brand integrity of the boutique and the quality of the designer collections they carry. What is your favorite piece on the website right now? Oh my, with 4,000 products from the best boutiques in the country, how can I only pick one! Here are some current favorites: From Bleu in Los Angeles I really want the Alice + Olivia Adel Side Cut Out Maxi Dress, and the 3.1 Phillip Lim Aurora Ankle Strap Heel. From Modelcitizen in Florida I’ve been meaning to order the Rag & Bone/Jean: Skinny Jean in Parliment, and from Whistle Club here in Santa Barbara I love the Crippen Stretch Leather Leggings in Black [as seen in New Things for a New Year]!

HAIR by Kim

Regardless of hair type, straight or curly, January’s carefree everyday look can be easily achieved in just a few steps! I prepped the lovely Nadia’s hair with my favorite volumizing products: Davines Volume Boosting Mousse and Kevin Murphy PREP Body Mass Spray. I worked in the mousse from the middle to the ends of the hair and the plumping spray at the roots in the crown area. Next, I used a medium round brush and blowdryer to achieve the fullest blowout possible. I then used a flat iron to BLOW give the ends a more realistic finish and lock in the style. Lastly, I used Kevin Murphy’s Un.Dressed Fiber Paste (the very best finishing product!) to STYLE achieve a more “piecey,” worn in look, and to smooth any fly-aways.

From blowouts to up styles and everything in between - styling is my passion! Full voluminous blowouts, WORK bouncy beachy waves, trendy bohemian braids, and beautiful soft bridal up styles are among my favorite things to do. And let’s not forget cutting! The perfect cut is a must to compliment every style.

MAKEUP by Cynthia To create a sunkissed bronze look, I prepped the skin with Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè followed by MAC Strobe Liquid and MAC SKIN Matchmaster Foundation. I used GloMinerals Pressed Base in Golden Medium to set all over the face, and Glo Minerals Bronzer in Sunkiss to give the skin a nice bronze glow. MAC’s Mineralize GLOW Skinfinish in Cheeky Bronze gave the look perfectly sunkissed finish. For lasting eyes, I primed the lids first with Urban Decay Primer Potion Original EYES Shade, then used MAC Paint Pot in Indian Wood. Following with LORAC Unzipped Palette, I used the shades Undercover and Unspoken all over the lid and then added Uncensored for more intensity.

On the inner corner of the lid I brushed Unreal to make her beautiful eyes pop. On the bottom lashline I mixed Untamed and LASH Unattainable. To achieve a bolder look on the liner, I used MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack. For the lashes I used a few coats of GloMinerals Lash Boosting Mascara followed by Ardell Demi Whispy Lashes and added a few individual lashes for a fuller look. With a vibrant eye I wanted a more natural lip to tie in the whole look, so I used a combination of GloMinerals Rose Petal, Toffee lipsticks, and Native Lipliner to create LIPS one of my favorite natural lip combos! I love doing all looks from the soft, natural, barely there looks to the WORK dramatic, very defined eyes and lips. My specialty is special occasion and bridal makeup. I also love sharing tips and choosing colors for guests’ everyday wear as well!
