love the quintessentially Santa Barbara approach as one drives down Mesa Lane toward the beach. Eucalyptus trees stand in a row along the center median, and surfers beeline toward the beach with boards under their arms while dog walkers leisurely stroll in the same direction. The closer you get to the Steps at Mesa Lane, the less likely you’ll find a parking spot, especially when the sun is out or the surf is up. But it’s all good.

The only thing that could make this scene more stereotypically Santa Barbara would be a Beach Boys tune playing in the background, and maybe the smell of suntan lotion wafting on the breeze.

I didn’t smell Coppertone last week when I visited the property for sale at 101 Mesa Lane, but I sure heard Beach Boys songs playing in my head. It’s a magical estate once owned by Mike Love of the Beach Boys. With over two hundred feet of private oceanfront bluff top, and over two and a half acres of coastline, there is literally nothing else like it.

Still affectionately referred to as the Love Compound, the enclave was purportedly sold in the 1990s to a group of friends on a handshake deal, making the current listing the first time that it has ever been officially on the market.

The history of the property stretches back further than Mike Love’s first “Surfin’ Safari.” In the 1920s, it was the site of a girls’ summer camp. In Julia Childs’s autobiography, she mentions spending three summers at the camp and reminisces about pancakeeating contests at the camp run by “Aunt Sally” Leadbetter. Today, one of the cottages, known as the Love Cottage, has a large living room with brick walls and vaulted ceilings that reportedly was originally the camp’s dining hall.

Perhaps it’s not surprising that the sale of this storied enclave contains twists and turns as well. Interested buyers can buy the entire property outright, with an asking price of $14,950,000. Also

available are two options to purchase an undivided interest under a Tenancy in Common arrangement.

Under these options, buyers are able to occupy one or more of the cottages, depending which option they pursue. These entail either a 43 percent ownership with a price tag of $6,407,000, or a 14 percent ownership at $2,136,000.

There are five cottages in the Love Compound, plus auxiliary buildings that serve as guest quarters, a music studio, and a workshop. The cottages are called the Tranquility, Love, Joy, Serenity, and Bliss Cottages. Smirk at the hippie-dippie names if you must, but visit this enclave and you’ll feel the magic and scoff no more.

Rooftop view decks, twisting staircases, sweet little patios, an outdoor shower, and meandering pathways throughout the grounds are just a few of the touches sure to charm any visitor. But it’s the splendor of the wide-open ocean view, plus the hot tub perched on a deck at the cliff ’s edge, and the serenity that comes from soaking it all in that make this homestead unique.

As I rambled from one cottage to the next, I decided not to try to catalog every feature of each one of the houses.

However, a few stand-out impressions include the living and dining room area in the Tranquility Cottage. The unobstructed view out its wall of windows, over a wooden patio to the grassy bluff and the ocean beyond, literally took my breath away.

Likewise, the beach-facing deck on the second story of the Love Cottage. With a stairway so narrow only one person can ascend at a time, once

upstairs, the deck feels like being in a treehouse on a boat, navigating the open sea.

The rock pathway and succulent garden between the Serenity Cottage and the Bliss Cottage was another highlight. And the fact that the Joy Cottage was originally built as Mike Love’s music studio holds its own mystique. While these details do impress, no recounting of their parts could hold a candle to their overall appeal.

The 43 percent ownership option includes exclusive rights to the Love Cottage, Joy Cottage, guest apartment, and music studio, along with shared access to the rest of the grounds. The 14 percent ownership includes rights to the Bliss Cottage, plus the same access and amenities as the other owners.

As I headed back to reality, I felt glad for the opportunity to visit this magical place. I don’t need to live on the Love Compound; I can admire almost the same view as I walk down the Steps at Mesa Lane. But I still couldn’t help but do the math in my head. I wondered if there was a .5 percent ownership option that might let me have access to the gate code and perhaps a dip in the hot tub once in a while. I daydreamed as I walked down the steps, and I realized the Beach Boys tune running through my head was “Wouldn’t It Be Nice?”

People Helping People’s Vino de Sueños Raises Funds for Farmworkers

O

n November 9 at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott, People Helping People (PHP) held its 12th annual Vino de Sueños (“Wine of Dreams”), which it estimates netted more than $50,000 for its programs serving area farmworkers.

A real sense of community permeated the event, with people drawn in by the event’s purpose: to raise funds to make a difference in the lives of farmworkers. Their yearround hard work in the fields is crucial to the county’s agricultural economy, yet their low wages in an area with such a high cost of living means they can struggle to meet basic expenses.

The event was a creative and fun blending of wine and art. A dozen premium wineries each donated six cases of wine, which were available for sampling and purchase.

Six of the winemakers were on hand to personally pour and chat about their wines. Talented local artists donated original vineyard-inspired artwork, which formed the basis of the attractive wine labels and were sold through the silent auction. The 300-plus guests enjoyed sampling wine from these wineries and appetizers from fine food purveyors. There was great music by Complicated Animals and by Mônica da Silva and many silent auction items to peruse.

Rick Longoria, owner and winemaker at Longoria Wines, dreamed up the concept of Vino de Sueños 12 years ago, and PHP CEO Dean Palius and six other winery owners jumped right on board. Longoria shared how right now, at the end of harvest, is the perfect time to remind ourselves of how hard farmworkers work yearround and how valuable their contributions are. It is the perfect time to pay them back, related Longoria, through the auspices of PHP. Longoria and two other founding winemakers, Bill Wathen from Foxen Vineyard & Winery and Karen Steinwachs from Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard, come back year after year, pouring their wines and engaging with guests. Alma Rosa, another original participating winery, also participated, along with The Brander Vineyard, Dierberg, Ken Brown Wines, Kitá Wines, Lincourt Vineyards, Refugio Ranch & Vineyard, Riverbench Vineyard & Winery, and Stolpman Vineyards.

Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard winemaker Karen Steinwachs shared that she has wanted to participate every year, because PHP is an amazing organization that provides so much help to the underprivileged. She is especially thankful for the assistance they provide farmworkers, who work so hard but don’t make much money.

Steinwachs also noted that with one of Buttonwood’s owners, Seyburn Zorthian, being an artist (who designed Buttonwood’s Vino de Sueños label), the winery is well suited for an event that blends art and wine.

The event proceeds all go to PHP’s assistance to farmworkers and their families. Funds will help meet basic needs, including providing food, rent, and utility assistance. Funds will also be used for support services such as counseling, domestic violence and child abuse prevention, parent education, and scholarships. Each year, PHP provides about $250,000 in assistance to nearly 1,000 farmworkers and their families.

People Helping People currently operates with a $2.1 million budget and provides a wide range of assistance in the Santa Ynez Valley and Los Alamos Valley, including food, homelessness prevention, healthcare access, youth mentoring, and alcohol and drug abuse prevention. Last year, PHP served 3,850 unduplicated clients.

For Thanksgiving, PHP will do its annual turkey distribution for needy families. Next month, it once again will have its holiday Fulfill-a-Wish Program, which provides 100 needy families with toys, clothing, and household items that the families select themselves at a decorated boutique.

C.A.R. COMMENDS REQUEST TO EXPEDITE WILDFIRE INSURANCE CLAIMS

n light of the Cave Fire that broke out on the afternoon of November 25, the following information feels appropriate to share. This fire is yet another reminder that we should not neglect to understand our fire insurance coverage and options.

The California Association of Realtors® (C.A.R.) issued the following statement in response to California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara’s request for the expedition of claims handling for California’s wildfire victims: “We are pleased that Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has asked for insurance companies to expedite the claims process for wildfire victims so that they can begin the rebuilding and healing process and move forward with their lives,” said C.A.R. President Jeanne Radsick, a second-generation REALTOR® from Bakersfield.

“With so many homes and businesses lost in the state’s recent fires, this move will provide affected communities with more immediate support in their time of need.”

Commissioner Lara is asking insurance companies to provide greater flexibility to survivors affected by wildfires across the state with some deadlines and documentation typically required to pay claims, including:

Minimum four-month advance payment of Loss of Use, Fair Rental Value or Additional Living Expenses • Minimum 60-day billing grace period to allow for lost or destroyed renewal notices • Advance payment of at least 25 percent of policy limits for personal property — without the completion of an inventory • Accepting any inventory form that contains substantially the same information as a company-specific form • Accepting an inventory that includes groupings of personal property, such as clothing, shoes, books, or food items rather than listing individual items • Expediting payment of vehicle damage claims covered under comprehensive loss coverage • Cooperating with consolidated debris removal efforts coordinated through city, county, and state agencies, unless the insurer can provide more rapid debris removal outside of this effort.

f the world’s seven billion-plus people, more than half live in cities. Ninety percent of these cities are in coastal areas, threatened by climate-induced sea-level rise and powerful storms. The United Nations’ latest projections put the world’s population at 10.9 billion by 2100, an increase of more than 3 billion people over current levels. This is a staggering increase, but it’s almost half a billion smaller than the UN’s projection just two years earlier, in 2017. This trend of shrinking forecasts is encouraging.

As early as 2050, per the UN’s estimates, 70 percent of people will live in cities. The thought of producing food, providing fresh water, and generating energy for this additional 40 percent growth is daunting. The planet is already facing a mass biodiversity extinction crisis. How can it possibly be reversed when we humans, the cause of this crisis, are increasing by billions? For there to be any hope, we are going to have to do a lot more with a lot less in the coming years.

Dr. Karen Seto, a geographer at Yale University, sees increasing urbanization as a big part of the solution. All urban dwellers occupy less than 3 percent of the earth’s land surfaces but currently consume two-thirds of total energy and create 70 percent of carbon emissions.
