I

visit a lot of open houses. Sometimes I’ll plan my weekend around the schedule of an interesting-sounding home for sale. Other times, I’ll take a quick break from the office to tour a house during the brokers’ caravans that are held on weekday mornings. We’re lucky here in Santa Barbara that we can visit open homes yearround, but the current season—the spring-intosummer bridge that is the month of May—is the ideal time of year for open-house hopping. Gardens are in bloom and neighbors are outside painting fences and dabbling in DIY projects. Whether or not you’re currently in the market to buy a home, it’s still fun to stroll through, take a look around, and imagine yourself creating in the kitchen or floating in the pool. The real estate agents who host the open houses know everything about the home-buying process and hope that one day they’ll be able to help you find your dream home.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties is holding a mega open house event this weekend. Hundreds of homes from San Diego through Santa Barbara will put out the welcome mat and invite you in for a visit. Huge oak trees and a verdant landscape keep it cool and quiet yet beckoning. It’s easy to imagine both garden parties and all sorts of kids’ adventures being conjured in this space. Besides the three bedrooms and two baths in the main house, there is a detached office or artist’s studio, or the option of a fourth bedroom overlooking the serene setting. n Saturday, April 29, more than 250 supporters of the United Boys & Girls Clubs (UBGC) descended on the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club for the concluding event of the Rally 4 Kids: White Party on the Green. UBGC operates after-school programming for youths aged 6-18 at club locations in Santa Barbara, Goleta, Isla Vista, Carpinteria, and Lompoc, as well as three school sites in the county. The rally began at the Polo Club and made four stops on the first day along a scenic, circuitous route, including the Santa Maria Airport, where participants got the thrill of racing on a 0.45-mile, six-turn handling track. The day ended at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort in Avila Beach, where guests dined, partied, and spent the night. The next day included lunch at the Lompoc UBGC, where CEO Michael Baker gave tours and participants engaged in interactive activities with the youth. The Polo Club provided the perfect setting for the elegant White Party on the Green. The 50 rally cars — Ferraris and Lamborghinis alongside mainstream vehicles — and tall, white teardrop flags framed the dining area, which featured tables with white linens and white roses. Stylish

Baker thanked the guests for their support, which has enabled UBGC to pay off the $800,000 debt that existed when he was hired. Board President Eloy Ortega, Treasurer Louise Cruz, Secretary Carol Del Ciello, Support has also allowed UBGC to open on and Boardmember John Petote Saturdays, which is important not just for the programming but also for the meals it provides, since 97 percent of kids who come to clubs qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches. Community support has enabled UBGC to extend its hours of operation, send staff to conduct recess programming at schools, and begin its outreach program, which identifies at-risk youth who would benefit from its programs and ensures that any barriers to participation, such as an inability to pay the membership or transportation fees, are overcome. In summarizing the benefits of UBGC, Baker noted the value of the homework help and full range of activities provided by the club but emphasized that it is “the car-

Friday’s project was Habitat for Humanity’s 35th home repair in southern Santa Barbara County under this program.

The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors – Young Professionals Network teamed with Habitat for Humanity on Friday, April 28 in their “A Brush With Kindness” program. Twelve volunteers painted the exterior of a home in Carpinteria. While they were working, volunteer Justin Dees noticed a broken fence on the property and was able to repair and rebuild the fence. At the end of the event the homeowner shared her excitement for the improvements and thanked the volunteers for both the freshly painted home and the ‘new’ fence.
