he ballroom at the Bacara Resort & Spa was decked out in gold for the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) annual Riviera Ball, while many of the guests opted for classic black gowns and tuxes for this elegant affair. The December 3 event honored Dr. Frederic Kass, the medical director at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, with the Physician of the Year Award and honored cancer patient Amaia Laskin. A preliminary tally indicated that they raised $100,000. After the cocktail reception, guests were greeted over dinner by cochairs Denise Sanford and Chuck Bischof and entertained by a stunning flamenco performance by dancers from the Linda Vega Dance Studio. ACS CEO Gary Reedy addressed the guests via video, noting the remarkable 22 percent decline in cancer death rates in the United States in the past two decades. Emcee Janet Garufis introduced Kass, who humbly accepted the award on behalf of his staff and patients. He shared that the key is to “work in a place with really great staff, and then you find really extraordinary patients with whom to partner, and then just sit back, do your work, and have them make you look good.” Kass noted that he has practiced “cancer medicine for 30 years, and there is almost nothing scientifically that practice now has in common with where we were 30 years ago … I feel that the privilege of being an oncologist for the last few decades has been to be a witness to the extraordinary transformation of cancer medicine for much of which we owe ACS a great deal of thanks.” Garufis praised Kass “not just for his extraordinary talent, but for his extraordinary heart,” as well. Laskin, 18 and in her first year at Santa Barbara City College, shared her traumatic battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After a diagnosis in the summer of 2014, she underwent surgery and 30 months of intense chemotherapy, which led to many horrendous complications. Her positive spirit, eloquence, and poise were touching and inspiring.   Andrew Firestone lent his trademark passion and humor to the lively auction and paddle raise, and then DJ Scott Topper played the dance tunes to a packed dance floor. The funds raised at the event support research and free services to cancer patients, health-care providers, and caregivers in the Central Coast region. ACS is the largest private funder of cancer research and has invested more than $4.5 billion since 1946.

his week’s home is one of the earliest examples in the city to manifest fairytale-style architecture. In approximately 1880, Elizabeth H. Knight acquired vacant lot 6 of block 71 on the Eastside of town. Between 1887 and 1888, she had a one-and-a-half-story residence built on the land. Even though Knight had the home designed, she never actually lived on the premises, which leads one to believe the home was built on speculation for a future owner to enjoy.Years later, area candy maker Charles M. Kingsley would inhabit the home. Though constructed during the Victorian era, the home is essentially Eastlake in style and has a number of fairy-tale styles, unusual architectural elements for its day that give it a whimsical feel. To achieve this creative aesthetic, basic shiplap siding was used on the exterior (a very common attribute for homes at that time), but the true creative vision was achieved with the use of exaggerated, sawtooth, and half-circle shingles on the second story, along with a noteworthy high-pitched gable roof. In later years, the crawl space in the attic above the front porch was expanded to enlarge the upstairs. Currently, the property serves as a legal, four-unit residential apartment house, due to the fact that additional improvements and modest expansions were allowed while preserving its original architectural charm.

The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors Young Professionals Network partnered with Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, December 3, 2016 to paint and preserve the exterior of a home in Carpinteria as part of “A Brush with Kindness,” a program which aids in home repair and preservation for those in need. The volunteers’ duties included painting, prep, and carpentry work. “The SBAOR Young Professionals Network is happy to assist Habitat for Humanity with this cause,” said group member Brianna Johnson. “Since the majority of us are Realtors or work in the Real Estate industry, this program felt like a natural fit for us.” Event participants Included: Marcos Lazaro, Brianna Johnson, Renee Grubb, Ivonne Arroyo, David Magid, Easton Konn, Robert Watt, Kevin Hall – Village Properties Realtors; Jessie Sessions, Jason Peterson – Berkshire Hathaway; Ali Evans, Jordan Robinson, Jonathan Gilkeson – Keller Williams; Kristi Bozzo – New American Funding; Nicole Eva – Compass.
