“Don’t you want a real photographer?” was Paul Wellman’s response to Indy Editor in Chief Marianne Partridge when she tapped him in 2002 to take over the reins as the paper’s sole staff shooter. But as we all know, when you come to a fork in the road, it’s always best to take it, so what Wellman lacked in formal schooling he soon made up for with the full-time education the paper offers. Twelve years of courtrooms and concerts, portraits and protests, foods and drinks, lectures and S.B. government — not to mention trips to the Channel Islands — all via planes, trains, and bicycles, and Wellman said, “I think I’m starting to get the hang of this.”

F

or the writers and editors who dominate the editorial side of the building at the West Figueroa Street offices of The Santa Barbara Independent, the world revolves around words. When we link our words together properly, we can carefully describe the scene of a crime, eloquently reveal the nuances of a political campaign, and deftly break down the complicated details of sordid scandals.

Yet as we toil as a team at our modern digital typewriters day in and day out, there is but one man responsible for delivering the other half of our newspaper’s package: Paul Wellman, who’s been expertly capturing photographs for The Independent since 2001, each week providing the images that draw people in to actually read all those words we care so much about.

Without his work — as well as the occasional images shot by Santa Barbara-based photographers, most notably David Bazemore — no one would bother picking up the paper, and that's one of the few things our diverse staff can all agree upon.

With that, we unveil the best of the best photographs from the archives of 2013, including the shot Wellman took above of his family cabin deep in the Cuyama Valley. Enjoy, and get ready for many more words and pictures in 2014.

OUR TOWN One reason Santa Barbara is such a lovely place to live is the community of people. Edythe Kirchmaier (1) is doing her part to keep things interesting.

At 105, she’s been a volunteer with Direct Relief International for 40 years and caught national attention as the oldest person on Facebook.

While keeping busy and fit is a big part of the town’s culture, as proved by the myriad exercise classes offered around town, such as Zumba (2), unfortunately some people still fall through the cracks and end up spending time in the county jail (3). Plants and animals fare well in S.B., however. The UCSB biology department made the news when its (4) titan arum (a k a corpse flower) reached full bloom, releasing the smell of death.

The zoo saw a new addition to its giraffe population with the birth of Dane (5), and the mini Vietnamese potbellied pig, Snowball, got a peck on the head from Franklin School Principal Casey Kilgore (6), who promised to smooch the pig if the school’s API scores were raised. They were!

4 WEATHER AND WAR The world was reminded of Mother Nature’s destructive potential as Typhoon Haiyan (1) tore through the Philippines. At its peak, the storm was a 370-mile-wide cyclone of fiendish winds that reached gusts of 235 miles per hour and sustained at just shy of 200 miles per hour. Storm surges brought water 17 feet straight up buildings, flooding the ground level of almost every structure in the affected coastal areas, ultimately taking thousands of lives. U.S. soldiers who died in battle continued to be remembered by fellow servicemen such as Robert Groom (2), a former sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division, E Company, who lit crosses at the 10-year anniversary and last setup of the Sunday beach memorial known as Arlington West (3). In this semirural environment we call home, wildlife is never far from our front doors. In January, an adult mountain lion (4) found its way into a backyard of an Apple Grove Lane home. Fish & Wildlife officers successfully captured the animal, which was then released into the backcountry.

4 3 CELEBRATIONS AND REOPENINGS It was a good year for supporters of marriage equality when the Supreme Court struck down Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act in June. Folks celebrated at the courthouse (1), where Congressmember Lois Capps termed the court rulings “an enormous victory for loving, married couples and their families” and their right to be treated equally under the law. In autumn, the arts community got a boost when it added the recently renovated New Victoria Theatre to its list of arts venues. Jonathan Fox (2), the executive artistic director of Ensemble Theatre Company and the driving force behind the $11.5 million project, estimated that the new patron space is fully five times what it was in the old configuration. A visit from a WWII hero was also on the 2013 calendar when Louis Zamperini (3) made a special trip to town in June to share his harrowing story, documented in Laura Hillenbrand’s award-wining book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, at a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club. The summer months also included a party to rededicate the vibrantly restored Chromatic Arch (4) at the Cabrillo Ball Park Beach and the yearly return of Old Spanish Days, when townsfolk revel in Santa Barbara’s rich history. With flamenco dance performances as a mainstay of Fiesta week moms — like Cami Barnwell (5), tirelessly shuttling her daughter from one event to another — are on full time duty.

SMOKED OUT Santa Barbara was spared any major wildfires in 2013, but there were some close calls, such as (1) the White Fire that torched the Paradise Road in late May, as well as smaller infernos that changed lives, such as (2) the fire started by a homeless man in the former Montecito Motors shop, owned since the 1940s by the Dal Pozzo family, and, most tragically, (3) the Eastside blaze that destroyed so many highlights in the career of artist Manuel Unzueta. (4) Santa Barbara’s own motorcycle superstar Clint Ewing also ran into some flames when he crashed in August during an attempt to break a world record for riding through a tunnel of fire (he’s recovering well now), and (5) Vandenberg Air Force Base continued its usual launching of rocket fire toward the skies, this year expanding its offerings to include commercial payloads as part of the SpaceX program.

Our beloved Jean passed away peacefully at home on a beautiful Santa Barbara day December , . Born in Palo Alto CA to Daniel W. Kittredge, M.D. & Juanita Kittredge, she was raised in New York City, Flagstaff Arizona & Santa Barbara California. She attended Stevens College in Missouri, the University of Hawaii & lived on Canton Island where her father practiced medicine when he was employed by Pan American Airlines.

She moved back to Santa Barbara in  & began her working career first at City Pharmacy, Better Business Bureau, then Santa Barbara Medical/Sansum Clinic. For  years she was the Queen of the OB-GYN Department!

She originally worked for Therion Loughrin, M.D. then John Vander Heide, M.D. who became a very special friend in her life.

In  she became a Volunteer for the Sansum Clinic Auxiliary and loved every minute of it, making wonderful new friends and was still a part of it until this year. If Jean was not at her desk volunteering she could be found around town either shopping at the mall or thrift stores especially the Assistance League!

She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse Hershel Wright and son Zachary Miller. Jean is survived by her loving daughter Dona Renkoski, son-in-law Mike, sister Susan Hunsaker (Lee) & dear family friends Phil & Lee Skeen.

The family wishes to thank the Physicians & staff at Sansum Clinic, Cancer Center of Santa Barbara,Visiting Nurse-Hospice Care & Brandy Ackerman for all her love & care.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Sansum Clinic Auxiliary P.O. Box  Santa Barbara, CA  which was very dear to her and will allow for future Nursing Scholarships to be given annually or Visiting Nurse-Hospice Care of Santa Barbara.

In  he moved to Santa Barbara to attend school at UCSB where he began his writing career, and met his wife Frances Fehr, whom he told ‘I’m going to write, win, draw, or lose’. He would spend the rest of his life remembering his second chance. They moved to East Mountain Drive and became one of the original Bohemians with their dogs, burros, horses, and Purina the pet deer.

He began free-diving the coast line before there were wet suits and was a subsistence hunter supplying his family with boar and deer meat. He was a creative writing instructor through City College’s Adult Education for  years. He danced and choreographed ballet performances and enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Biltmore on the weekends with his wife Frances.

He was a Santa Barbara Icon, inspiring so many and will be dearly missed. He is Survived by his daughter Jolie, son Gavin, granddaughter Shane and two great-granddaughters, Kira and Chloe.

Blowout of . The lawsuit achieved a substantial settlement for Santa Barbara County and, as a side effect encouraged the environmental movement.

Marv was highly valued and respected as Counsel for the various County departments he served, especially Mental Health and Social Services. He also mentored many younger colleagues. In later years, Marv presided as Judicial Hearing Officer over Mental Health commitments.

During , Marv and his family resided in Southern France. Besides taking the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, Marv pursued his passion for drawing and painting.

He was also a music lover and collector and restorer of string instruments. For many years he played recorder music in a quartet of other accomplished musicians in Santa Barbara.

Marv and Peggy Noel married in  and long before retirement, they were enthusiastic foreign travelers, especially enjoying long sea voyages aboard container ships which took them to ports not on the usual cruise ship itineraries.

Marv is survived by wife, Margaret Levine of Santa Barbara; brother, Isaac Levine of Somers, NY; grandchildren, Maurissa and Evan Moore of Colorado; Trevor Noel of Massachusetts; son-in-law, John Moore of Colorado; sister-in-law, Sally Norris of Massachusetts; brothers-in-law, Paul (Fran) Norris of Illinois; Bill Norris of Oregon, Bob Norris of Massachusetts, Richard (Linda) Norris of Virginia; cousins, Joan Gordon of Los Angeles; and Edie Koppelman of New Jersey. Marv was pre-deceased by his beloved daughter, Mindy Levine Moore; former wife, Eleanor Kaplan, Levine Kuntz; and step-son, Scott Noel.

The family thanks Katerina Zamyatina and her staff; Drs. Randall, Howard, Alex Koper, Hsien Young and Sarah Kempe-Mehl for their care of Marv. Thanks also to the DASH program (Doctors Assisting Seniors at Home) and to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care; especially Elisabeth Swede, R.N. Marvin Levine passed away on // from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was born and raised in The Bronx, New York.

He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, Long Island University and Brooklyn Law School. Law school was interrupted by military service during the Korean Conflict.

He served in the Army as a paratrooper in the /rd Regiment of the th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell KY. Throughout his life, he was proud of having been an Airborne trooper and had many jumps to his credit.

Following his admission to the bar, he had a small practice in Manhattan. In , Marv was hired as Deputy County Counsel

by Santa Barbara County. Throughout his career, he was Chief Deputy County Counsel, Assistant County Counsel and Acting County Counsel before his retirement in . One of his proudest career achievements was representing Santa Barbara County in the lawsuit against Union Oil Company, et. al. following the catastrophic Santa Barbara Channel Oil

Henrietta Amundsen di Suvero, beloved Mother of Marius Ledebur, Romana di Suvero and Alexander di Suvero and grandmother of Ava Victoria Roeg, died on October , .

She was the only daughter of Olaf Amundsen and Sarah Wigglesworth Porter and was born in Boston. She grew up in Norway attending schools in Oslo and nearby Thule until she went to school in England at Cranbourne Chase, London and then moved to the United States in , residing in Ojai, California with her parents. She met and married Christian Ledebur with whom she had a son named Marius who lives in Northern California. She divorced in  and in the late ’s she met

Victor di Suvero, whom she married in  in Northern California. They had their daughter Anna Francesca Romana and son,Victor Alexander. Her daughter resides in London where she is a successful landscape architect and her granddaughter, Ava Roeg is a recognized writer and editor. Her son, who is a worldwide traveling cinematographer, resides in the New York area with his wife Flora.

After years in Northern California and Europe, Henrietta’s love of the landscape and climate led her to return to Southern California and live in Santa Barbara. She worked as a volunteer regularly with Santa Barbara Meals on Wheels, Lotusland and Direct Relief International for many years. The love of life and generosity she demonstrated were recognized as essential elements of her character and became apparent in the friendships she and her husband Victor made with Krishnamurti, John and Toni Lilly,Yanko Varda, Jerry Mander and Alan Watts. Henrietta was a good friend to those she cared for and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Anne Beckwith (Miller) Johnson was born in Riverside California on August , . She died in her sleep in the company of her oldest and youngest, at Cottage Hospital on December th after a long age-related decline.

Following graduation from high school at , she moved to Santa Barbara to attend UCSB (then S.B. State College), where she eyed the ebullient Vernon O. Johnson striding across the quad and married him six months later as he enlisted in the Air Force in March . More than , letters between them during the war are a testament to their young passion, his commitment to making the world better, and her willingness to believe in his dreams. Both only children, together they bore eight. During the height of the Cold War in ,Vernon and Anne packed them in a cranky old bus and spent  months driving around the world. Her book describing the trip, Home is Where The Bus Is, drawn from extensive diaries, described how two adults and eight children would become ambassadors for peace in an otherwise fear-filled world.

Unfortunately this humor- and challenge-rich chronicle of world outreach was published the week before /.

Anne was a smart, caring, good-humored woman who, in addition to her eight, was a foster parent to at least  teenagers and was a surrogate mother to many more. She worked at Quad Group from  to , where taped to her typewriter was “If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.” After retirement she began taking writing classes and, in her s, taught writing at Adult Education while publishing vignettes in local newspa-

Jila Arastouzadeh passed away December , , peacefully in her home surrounded by those who loved her. She was born in Iran, and due to the revolution she moved to Israel and then to Los Angeles. She attended the University of Judaism and founded the Persian Hillel at UCLA. Upon receiving her masters degree, she moved to Santa Barbara to work as a Social Worker at the UCSB Hillel.

After she was diagnosed with breast cancer in , she fearlessly charted her own course of healing spanning  years. She learned and utilized a wide range of healing modalities, often amazing and inspiring those around her, including the medical doctors and healers with whom she interacted. She was a memorable presence. She had a deep connection with nature and touched many people in Santa Barbara’s spiritual, art, education, and healing communities.What will always be remembered about Jila is her intuitive wisdom, kindness, gentle and loving nature, and true compassion for all beings.

3 FACES TO REMEMBER Frequently in the headlines in 2013 was the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, whose leaders (1), including, from left, Vincent Armenta, Richard Gomez, and Sam Cohen, are seeking to annex the 1,400-acre Camp 4 property into their Santa Ynez Valley reservation, which is making residents there antsy about what might be developed. The City of Goleta faced a much easier decision when approving the Islamic Society of Santa Barbara’s desire for a mosque and community center in Goleta, which made Mukhtar Khan and his daughter, Dalia, (2) quite pleased.

Scandals hit the news pages, too, including alleged slumlord Dario Pini (3) facing much scrutiny from Santa Barbara City Hall. But taking the scandalous cake are the 11,500 reportedly sexual texts exchanged between recently retired Undersheriff Jim Peterson (4) and former Search and Rescue spokesperson Valerie Walston (5), whose complaint to the County of Santa Barbara claimed Peterson had abused his authority. (6) A city council election also made for some interesting looks in the fall, including this scene on Stearns Wharf where, from right, Harwood “Bendy” White and Gregg Hart (both eventual winners) react in their own special ways to something uttered by upstart candidate Jason Nelson, who would lose the November contest.

THE COAST WITH THE MOST As usual, the great outdoors played a big part in the life of Santa Barbara this year, with our lens most often focusing on coastal issues. (1) Anacapa Island, (2) its seagulls, and the rest of the Channel Islands National Park are under examination as the National Park Service prepares a plan for the next 50 years; (3) on the mainland, just up the coast from the massive kelp forests off of Hollister Ranch, (4) the Point Conception Lighthouse was slowly being dismantled in favor of new technologies, its massive lens now housed as an exhibit at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum; and (5) getting a front-row seat to it all is the southern sea otter, which is slowly expanding its range into the Santa Barbara Channel amid much human controversy.

REGRETTING AND REDRESSING Drunk driving shook Santa Barbara like never before in December when Raymond Morua (1), who was then Congressmember Lois Capps’s aide, crashed his car into 27-year-old bartender Mallory Rae Dies while allegedly very intoxicated; she died five days later, and he is awaiting trial for murder. Earlier in the year, sharp-dressing attorney Darryl Genis (2) was successful in getting a mistrial declared in the DUI case of Tony Denunzio (3), who suffered a beating by the hands of a Santa Barbara cop after being pulled over in 2011; the District Attorney decided not to refile the charges.

Drinking also seemed to be behind a crazy crash on Arrellaga and De la Vina streets (4) in October that hurt three people and resulted in the arrest of Evan Githens (5). Meanwhile, former police department employee Karen Flores (6) pleaded no contest to charges that she embezzled more than $600,000 in parking-ticket fees during seven years, getting sentenced in September to 10 years in state prison.

The secret life of street gangs got some bright light shone upon it with the Santa Barbara Police Department’s November unveiling of Operation Falling Dawn, which resulted in lots of guns seized (1), charges against 68 people, and evidence that the Mexican Mafia may be making moves in town. There was an undercurrent of gang life in the case of Ismael Parra, Miguel Parra, and (pictured) Michael Cardenas (2), who were found guilty in March for the beating death of shopkeeper George Ied. But it seemed that just really poor individual decision-making was to blame for the crimes of Penny Estes (3), who scammed money out of those seeking to rebuild following the Tea Fire, and Louis Bristol (4), the Carpinteria pastor convicted of molesting underaged members of his flock. Still unsolved is the March break-in at Far West Gun & Supply on State Street (5), which led to a shutdown of the street as the SWAT team searched the building. december 26, 2013

Dr. Curtis B. Solberg, PhD November 9, 1939 - December 18, 2013

By Lana Rose I’ve always thought the world should stop and something cosmic and monumental should take place to mark a Good Person’s passing.

Curtis Solberg was - above all else - one of those Good Persons. It is hard to put such a large man into such a small space, but I will try.

They would all say the EXACT same thing: “You were the best teacher I ever had.” And he remembered them as well - where they sat, their high school, their dreams and shortcomings. He remembered their handwriting.

Born in North Dakota and living in Vallejo, CA, Curt grew up with two brothers who with their devoted father - cared for their mother through 27 years of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Extended family members gathered to help care for his mother, so Curt was surrounded by caretakers but that upbringing made him sensitive and empathetic to those who were elderly or afflicted. Curtis cared deeply about the unfortunate, and his liberal politics ran rampant when he felt the commonweal was being neglected. He was passionate about the deterioration of the American dream, for he was a product of that dream.

Descended from immigrant grandparents, Curtis cherished his Norwegian heritage, including being accomplished in the language. His connections to the homeland ran deep. We spent our honeymoon there in 1991 and I was quickly folded into the clan. Many Norse relatives and dear friends mourn his passing, as do thousands of students who passed through his classrooms at Santa Barbara City College. He began his tenure at the college in 1965 and, after 44 years of teaching more than 350 students each semester, retired in 2008. He continued to teach one night class each semester for five more years, almost making it to his goal of 50 years of teaching. In 1990-91 he was chosen by students and faculty for the prestigious Faculty Lecturer of the Year, delivering a dazzling presentation “The Divided Heart”: what it meant to be an American based on immigrant letters from America back to Norway.

In 2007, Curtis was diagnosed with prostate cancer. By 2012 the cancer had metastasized to his bones. He endured many treatment protocols and refused to see his life with cancer as a “battle.” He shared his journey through the illness by sending out periodic “Tom-Toms” to scores of his friends. His last TomTom demonstrated his characteristic acceptance of his disease: “Since my diagnosis 6 years ago, I’ve learned about the uniqueness of my cancer, how individual it is...not quite like anybody else’s. While in Norway a book entitled DODEN, SKAL VI DANSE? by Per Fugelli was recommended. This Norsk doctor my age encountered cancer and has written his book Death, Shall We Dance? not yet in English translation, becoming a favorite in Scandinavian TV as he explores his own experience with the disease. Fugelli rejects the classic war rhetoric of cancer sufferers characteristic of newspaper obituaries: “he has lost his battle with cancer” or “her struggle with the dreaded cancer is over”, and instead has adopted another paradigm, suggesting that “the demon” will actually be one’s partner for life’s duration. After all, many of us will live with cancer 2-58 perhaps 20 more years, so it’s wise to befriend their nemesis; instead of cancer The Great Satan, “can cancer be a rose, albeit with thorns?” In an imaginary conversation with his “partner,” he says: “Listen my live-in partner, perhaps we can have some useful years together, if we don’t become too rash and engage in fear and war, but instead take it easy, and respect each other’s existence.

His inimitable style will never be matched: he was exquisitely dressed, a traditional guy in all respects, so he chose socks which wildly coordinated with his shirt; the pants had to have cuffs, the jacket pocket a handkerchief. His ensemble was punctuated by his signature bow tie and a fedora, and off he would speed in his red 1965 mustang convertible - top down all year long - which he had owned since 1966.

He loved the whistles and thumbs-up he attracted when driving the vintage car and would proudly call out: “I’ve had it 48 years, man.”

Cancer: “But I like to kill.

Teaching was the soul of Curtis Solberg. The classroom was his stage and he made history come alive. He was well known for his ability to engage students and command their attention in the classroom through his unique delivery style and without the use of the technology used today. Unsatisfied with the typical dates-and-battles approach of most conventional textbooks, he wrote several editions of his own text, which emphasized the social context of events with a more holistic view. His standards of excellence were legendary. He emphasized writing in his curriculum - no multiple choice - making sure students did the reading by requiring ten 3-page papers over the semester, in addition to two midterms and a final. When students left his tutelage, they were ready for university-level work. A devoted mentor to students and faculty alike, many of his students entered the fields of history and education under his encouragement. We would meet his former students everywhere - car washes, restaurants, airports, grocery stores and gas stations.

Fugelli: “No, but it is I who have the power. I can live without you, but you cannot live without me. So you should conduct yourself wisely.”

Fugelli: “But do you like to die?

Cancer: “No one has asked me that before. I’ll think about it.

Fugelli: “Exactly. If you kill me, you die also.

Cancer: “Are you trying to entrap me?

Curt conducted himself wisely...and bravely. He modeled an extremely ethical and warm attitude. He was a gentleman and a diplomat, kind and brilliant and humble; he connected with others and reached into their minds to learn what made others tick. He cherished his Norwegian-barnred house, loved his two cats and took pride in the accomplishments of his daughters Kaaren and Christina, his grandchildren Trevor, Matthew, Isabel and Julian. And he was utterly devoted to me. To close, I quote Brian Andreas: “I carry you with me into the world, into the smell of the rain and the words that dance between people and for me it will always be this way: walking in the light remembering being alive together.”

Peace at last, my cherished mate.

A memorial celebration for Dr. Solberg will be held Saturday, January 4th at 2:00 p.m. on the West Campus of Santa Barbara City College - weather permitting - at the Bagish Overlook. Alternate rain location will be nearby. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara will endow a scholarship in his name: P.O. SAYING GOOD-BYE Santa Barbara lost some legends in 2013, including (1) restaurateur Thomas “Tommy” Yee Chung, whose family started Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens in the 1930s; (2) mover and shaker Mercedes Eichholz, whose philanthropy floated the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and many other nonprofits; (3) former County Supervisor Robert “Bob” Kallman, a consummate community leader who also served in the administration of three U.S. presidents; (4) McConnell’s Ice Cream founder Jim McCoy, who served sugar cones in exchange for smiles; (5) graphic designer and provocateur George Delmerico, who was this newspaper’s founding art director; (6) Lily Rossi, the longtime worker for the City of Santa Barbara, most notably as city clerk from 1983-1998; (7) the young Khalid Hurst, a former football star at Santa Barbara High who died in a motorcycle crash on Carrillo Hill; (8) Clare Nisbet, a friend to many in the broad Santa Barbara Middle School community and a former staffer at The Santa Barbara Independent who died tragically at age 33 in September; (9) Dr. Joseph Pollock, a philanthropic physician who attended weekly meetings nearly until his death at age 99; (10) author Barnaby Conrad, whose life as a bullfighter and artist eventually led to the founding of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference; and (11) Captain Fred Benko, whose Condor and Condor Express boats introduced countless people to the whales of the Santa Barbara Channel.

ROLLING ONWARD AND UPWARD The Amgen Tour of California, a k a the United States’ best attempt at a Tour de France, made its way through screaming crowds and onto Cabrillo Boulevard in April (1), and will return with much festival-like fanfare again this spring. In other rolling news, the Mission City Brawlin’ Betties continued their terror on the rink in a series of roller derby matches at Earl Warren Showgrounds, including this grinder against the Inland Empire Derby Divas in March (2). UCSB’s soccer team again brought the crowds to Harder Stadium, thanks to the antics of players like Peter Schmetz (3) throwing his whole body into a match against Westmont; the team made the NCAA tournament, but lost in the second round to Penn State. And perhaps most triumphant of all was Westmont College’s women’s basketball coach Kirsten Moore (4) leading her team to the 2013 NAIA championship, the season after her husband, Alex Moore, died just weeks before the birth of their first child, whom she named Alexis.

3 BALLS TO THE WALL Professional volleyball returned to the beach this year, with hometown hero Kerri Walsh Jennings (LEFT) and partner April Ross (1) winning the AVP Santa Barbara Open in September. UCSB’s sports programs continued to make great shots for the camera, with basketballer Kyle Boswell (2) twisting into a layup against Utah State in November and the baseball team (3) putting up an impressive record of 35-25 before losing in the NCAA regionals. On the gridiron, Bishop Diego’s high hopes for a state championship fell short when it lost to Ojai’s Nordhoff High in the semifinals (4), but players like Joe Salcedo (LEFT) and John Samson remained upbeat about posting a 33-6 record over the past three seasons. ■

The following films are playing in Santa Barbara THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, THROUGH TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31. Descriptions followed by initials — DJP (D.J. Palladino), JW (Josef Woodard) — have been taken from our critics’ reviews, which can be read in full at independent.com. The symbol ✯ indicates the film is recommended.

FIRST LOOKS ✯ American Hustle (138 mins.; R: pervasive language, some sexual content, brief violence)

The story begins, aptly enough, with a longish scene illustrating the process of presenting the ’do. It’s a mix of comb-over and hairpiece piecework, and it makes our dubious anti-hero’s coiffure passably hip. Said process is at once elaborate and steeped in the art of winging it, and so it goes with Christian Bale’s character, a con man of some natural skill who improvises as he goes and sometimes gets his man (and woman, in the case of con woman Amy Adams). So it goes, as well, with the latest David O. Russell film, loosely based on the ABSCAM scandal of the late ’70s/ early ’80s, which fools us into entertainment submission to its sweet-sour blend of farce and perilous suspense.

As we’re informed at the outset of the film, “Some of this actually happened,” and the rough storyline does a charismatic clumsy disco dance between the low-blow conning games of Bale, his love interest/ ally Adams, and the hyperactive FBI agent played by Bradley Cooper, offering the con man an out from prosecution through collaboration. The relative innocence of the scam — seeking to out corrupt politicians — has a chilling moment of broaching the no-man’s-land of mobster violence in a backroom scene with a high-ranking gangster (Robert De Niro). In the story’s pivotal corner is the con man’s wife (played with scene-stealing power by Jennifer Lawrence).

We instinctively know from the fashion, hair, and font that the “Me Decade” era is a secondary subject in Russell’s film, and he doesn’t disappoint on the “soaking in the ’70s” front. Coifs and clothes set the stage, from the taut curly mop of Cooper’s tightly wound FBI agent to the cool, comehithering swagger of Adams’s plunging necklines.

Russell’s latest film takes its place in the ranks of conning the conner cinema lorded over by greats like The Grifters and Catch Me If You Can, in which wits and kitsch prevail even as violence lurks around every corner. It’s one good recipe for the life richly lived and for the willing

✯ Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (119 mins.; PG-13: crude humor, language, violence)

Believe it or not, the best joke in this movie is topical. The whole of Anchorman  constitutes a just affront to how television news got so bad. Rather than the mere condescending tweak of 1970s local news that the first film attempted, the sequel actually tries to score satiric points.

Of course, the whole movie’s flocked with jokes calibrated for stoner-quality quoting, and long shaggy-dog gags, like a van set on cruise control filled with bowling balls, hot grease, and scorpions, which provides fine surrealistic moments even when anticipated miles away. Yet what shticks with you is how right the film gets the world of contemporary cable and broadcast news, even in an era when Jon Stewart drubs television journalism with regular wounding acuity.

Our story opens as Burgundy’s relationship with co-anchor and former foe Veronica Corningstone collapses after she’s promoted. Bereft and vindictive, Burgundy is about to give up completely when he’s approached to host the graveyard desk of a brand-new concept: a 24-hour news channel. Though Burgundy initially (rightly) mocks the whole idea, he converts when shown his first paycheck.

Then (genius stroke) it turns out his brash idiocy equips him perfectly for the brave new news world. And this is just a broad outline; the deviltry is in the details.

You might argue that this film is considerably less inspired than the original, but don’t forget it took a few years for Anchorman to develop a cult base through the haze of late-night bakedpotato screenings. Like The Big Lebowski, it seemed dumb until people got it. This one has a gratuitous shark musical number, a child of baffling grace, and deep-fried bats.

Just because Ferrell and his partner Adam McKay seem to have a little agenda doesn’t mean they’ve abandoned the low ground.

There are plenty of mindless pleasures here — and designer condoms, too. (DJP)

y foodie duties for the year wouldn’t be complete without summarizing activity at food and drink destinations on the South Coast. In 2013, there were 47 openings and 32 closings of restaurants and food trucks across the South Coast.

When compared to the activity in 2012, the number of openings decreased by 2 TRENDS: The Restaurant Guy compares South Coast openings and closings percent, while the number of over the last seven years. closings decreased by 32 percent. The most openings were FLASHES IN PANS: Eateries that both opened and in March, August, and November (6 each month). The closed in 2013: Verdé,  State Street (four months); most closings were in September (8).

We lost a longtime dining institution with more than 30 years of service on the South Coast: The Elephant Bar restaurant near Santa Barbara Airport shut its doors for good last August.

ROAD WARRIORS: “The Food Truck Invasion” was a

big story in this column in 2011. Sadly, we lost several of them in 2013 including O Street Truck (January), The New Black BBQ (January), Road Dogs (January), and Culture Shock (December).

LONGEST REMODEL (SEVEN YEARS): OrientExpress Hotels Ltd. acquired El Encanto ( Alvarado Pl.) in November 2004. Once the sale was complete, initial announcements had the hotel closing for renovation in 2005 and reopening in 2006. As it turned out, the closing didn’t happen until 2006, and El Encanto reopened in June 2013.

MOST CONTROVERSIAL OPENING: Chick-fil-A Restaurant opened on February 7 at  State Street (formerly Burger King). Chick-fil-A’s opening was partially delayed by political opposition to anti-gay-rights views attributed to the chain’s corporate ownership.

MOST CONTROVERSIAL CLOSING: On October 22,

when I broke the news that Maggie’s Restaurant ( State St.) had closed after just 14 months in business (preceded by nine months of extensive renovation), the story received more views (6,407) and more comments (159) than any other Restaurant Guy blog post this year. Though some comments were introspective and positive, the vast majority were negative opinions of the eatery.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF MITIGATED NEGATIVE DECLARATION As required by the California Environmental Quality Act, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fisheries Restoration Grant Program is providing Public Notice of the completion of a Mitigated Negative Declaration for a proposed project to enhance the capability of streams to produce anadromous salmonids by maintaining, restoring and improving stream habitat essential to salmonid production.

Project Location: Various streams in Del Norte, Humboldt, Los Angeles, Marin, Mendocino, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Siskiyou, Sonoma and Ventura counties.

Description of Project: This project will use grant funds approved by the California Legislature to initiate activities that are designed to restore salmon and steelhead habitat in coastal streams and watersheds that historically produced large populations of salmon and steelhead. Activities will improve spawning success for adult salmon and steelhead as well as increase survival for eggs, embryos, rearing juveniles and downstream migrants. Bank stabilization treatments will reduce sediment yield to streams.

Upslope road decommissioning or repair will also help address these widespread problems.

The replacement of barrier culverts with bridges or natural stream bottom culverts will allow adult and juvenile salmonids access to additional spawning and rearing habitat. The installation of instream structures will recruit and sort spawning gravel for adult salmon and steelhead and create summer rearing pools and over-wintering habitat for juveniles.
