A Very Special Wedding Present

I

presume that it was not a surprise gift when bridegroom Henry Patrick Lincoln had a modest five-room, one-story cottage built for his bride, Annie Merton Stanwood. The house was located on Bath Street just south of Micheltorena Street. Their wedding reception in 1889 was held in the home’s living room, which was said to be one of the largest of its kind in Santa Barbara.

Like his father and brother, Henry Patrick Lincoln was a successful banker. The Lincoln family, distant relatives of President Abraham Lincoln, had moved to Santa Barbara from Boston in 1871. The THE GREAT HOUSE DETECTIVE groom’s father, Amasa Lincoln, built the Lincoln House Hotel.

Now called The Upham, the hotel still stands on the corner of De la Vina and Sola streets.

Henry had grown up in Santa Barbara and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1883, along with three other students. He was the valedictorian.

by Betsy J. Green 1889 Lincoln-Stanwood wedding, another Lincoln-Stanwood wedding was held in the living room when Annie’s sister married Henry’s brother in 1903. The living room is crowned by a large chandelier.

The Home Grows Up Members of the Lincoln family lived in this home for almost a century. Henry and Annie had three children.

The youngest — Anna — was born in 1904. The family then decided to expand the home by adding a second floor.

During the summer of 1905, they moved out and traveled, staying at the Potter Hotel for a while. While they were gone, contractors raised the home’s roof and added a second floor. Other additions have been made to the home during its 132 years.

ADDRESS: 1426 Bath Street was usually a chamber pot in the bedroom that the maid would empty when necessary. Often, a bush with fragrant flowers was planted near the outhouse — for obvious reasons.

Perhaps because Henry was a banker, the home has a large safe hidden in a secret room in the home. The safe does not contain money or bottles of whiskey left over from Prohibition.

Attention, Ladies!

A 1908 map shows that the streetcar ran past the house and provided convenient transportation, although the hitching post may indicate that the family also had a horse and carriage. The horse was probably kept around the corner on Micheltorena Street, where there was a livery stable. There was no stable shown on the property on the older maps. (A livery stable rented horses and carriages and was also a place where people could board their horses.)

An 1892 map shows an outhouse in the backyard. The home predated indoor plumbing. Fortunately, people did not have to run outside every time they needed a bathroom break. There

The Lincoln’s son Warren was featured in the local paper in 1920 when he was 23. The year 1920 was a leap year, a year when it was socially acceptable for a young woman to propose marriage. The paper listed eight eligible young men in an article called “Santa Barbara Bachelors.” The newspaper wrote, “Warren Lincoln: Young. Regular habits. Eats food, sleeps in bed, rides in automobiles …

Partial to vamps.” (A vamp was a term used for flirtatious women.) Warren survived the leap year and later married in 1925.

Anna Lincoln lived in the home nearly 80 years. She was active in local theater productions and with the Santa Barbara Historical Society.

She married William B. Ellis in 1965. In 1981, she sold the home.

I was happy to see that there is still a hitching post on the parkway in front of the house. Current homeowner Nic Scozzaro really enjoys the stone wall that lines the front of the property. He says it’s just the right height for sitting, and he often sees people sitting on the wall. His partner, Genevieve Fox, loves the spacious kitchen that is shaded by an enormous pecan tree planted by Anna Lincoln.

ADL Celebrates 20th Anniversary

O

n December 12, about 70 supporters of the Santa Barbara/Tri-Counties office of ADL (Anti-Defamation League) celebrated the local office’s 20th anniversary at the home of boardmembers Julianna Dain and Tom Dain.

Guests mingled outdoors on the picturesque grounds of the Dains’ Montecito estate before being seated around heaters for the program, with blankets and warm food and beverages distributed. Regional Director Dan Meisel welcomed guests and noted that while ADL was celebrating 20 years of having a local office, ADL supporters have been active in the region since 1976.

In a video, the founding Regional Director, Julie Saltoun, explained how the local office strived at its founding to have a diverse board, though those outside the region thought this idea was crazy. The local board has always had nonJews, according to Meisel, because of the importance of including a diversity of perspectives and experiences.

The Educator of the Year Award was presented to Kathy Trujillo King, an SBCC Early Childhood Education instructor, for her longtime commitment to providing anti-bias workshops for students preparing to work as preschool teachers. Due to a family emergency, SBCC Interim Superintendent/President Kindred Murillo accepted the award for King. Tina Schlieske gave a lovely musical performance, followed by the ask and a livestream of ADL’s National Concert Against Hate with Gloria Estefan, Josh Groban, and others.

ADL’s mission is “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure just and fair treatment to all.” The mission recognizes, according to Meisel, that no minority or marginalized group is safe unless all groups are safe. Thus, ADL works to counter all forms of hate, often in coalition with other organizations.

During COVID, ADL has conducted online anti-bias workshops for employees of some Santa Barbara County municipalities and for a couple of nonprofits. In-person workshops are planned for students in SBCC’s Early Childhood Education program, where ADL had been doing workshops annually for many years before COVID hit.

Requests for workshops have recently come in from other schools in the county as well.

The local office encourages community members to report hate incidents. County-specific data is not available, but in the tri-county area, last year there were 32 credible

reports and 51 so far this year. Of those 51, 23 were anti-Semitic incidents and 15 were racial incidents. It is unknown whether there has been an increase in hate incidents or if people are simply speaking up more.

With hate incidents, Meisel shared, the response should be communal condemnation and meaningful engagement. The most effective condemnation, according to Meisel, is when it comes from a broad combination of voices in the community. Thus, ADL often works with other community groups.

ADL’s national Center on Extremism, which focuses on hate groups and movements, has assisted law enforcement in Santa Barbara in interpreting hate symbols and graffiti in various incidents. In 2019, the Boardmember Sissy Taran, Leah Eidelson, and Boardmember Gayle Eidelson Center provided info on groups who claimed credit for posting racist flyers on UCSB’s campus.

ADL’s national No Place for Hate initiative supports schools in their efforts to combat bias and bullying and to create an inclusive school environment. In the past, ADL’s local office provided support to schools that undertook activities geared to these ends and certified those that met ADL’s standards. In 2015, the initiative was active in 22 schools in Santa Barbara but waned in subsequent years.

Meisel’s intent, when he became regional director two years ago, was to reinvigorate the program with professional development and peer leadership training components.

Boardmembers Leslie White (secretary), Brook Ashley, and COVID thwarted those plans, though he is hopeful the Andee Gaines reinvigorated program will launch.

Going forward, Meisel also seeks to do other preventa- COVID causing people to become more isolated, he reative educational programming. he biggest question on people’s minds these days regarding our local real estate market is, “What is going to happen to the market in 2022?” That’s really an easy question to answer: I have no idea! You might as well consult a Magic 8-Ball or a fortune cookie.

I say that because we are way overdue for a “correction” to prices, both locally and across the country.

Historically, prices tend to go up over a 4-6 year cycle and then go down and correct themselves. However, we are in a period of historical growth and it has been almost ten years now since home prices started rising. And during the pandemic we have seen prices go up at rates not seen by anyone that I have talked to.

Couple that with very little inventory available and historically low interest rates, and homes are selling for prices farther above the listing prices than Realtors have ever seen.

There does, however, seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully it is not an oncoming train. I am a big believer in reading housing reports from experts a lot smarter than I am, such as chief economists from the
