Making Your Workday Work for You

hen I ask people to consider reengineering their workdays with the intention to help make their time work better and provide more quality time to do deep work, I often hear the rebuttal, “But I have to do certain things at certain times in my day, per my boss.” To that I reply … pish posh! You and only you know when you are at a peak moment or a low moment. I can guarantee that if you match your task to your energy, your boss will be much more satisfied with your output as an employee. People aren’t robots. We are humans with all kinds of complexities behind the selves that we bring to work (e.g.: hearts, emotions, family issues, tangled relationships, kids, mounting project lists at home, etc.). So, with all that in mind, let’s revisit the request, but with better questions: Who decides the rhythm of your day? When are you at your best, and when do you drag? Seth Godin posed these questions in a recent email post, then went on to say these brilliant words: In the old days, when we worked on the assembly line or even in sync at the office or at school, there were good reasons to adopt the timing that was assigned to us. But I think it makes way more sense to take control and listen and notice and work with our patterns, not against them. One example of the benefits of optimizing scheduled activities to maximize performance was demonstrated in a recent study of more than 25,000 students. Study participants were asked about their typical bedtimes and

wakeup times on both weekdays and weekends, the quality of their sleep, and their daytime sleepiness and energy levels. The participating high schools then delayed the start of their class times by 70 minutes. The study compared findings from before and after this change in schedule. With the school day starting later, the students were able to get an extra 3.8 hours of sleep a week. They also reported that they were sleeping better and experiencing less daytime sleepiness. As a bonus, the students didn’t need as much “catch-up” sleep on the weekends, which means they got up earlier. Overall, the high school students clearly performed better with a later start time. So, let’s organize potential changes around a similar strategy of examining our patterns. Here are a couple of examples: • If a workout at noon makes your afternoon more effective, it’s hard to see why you need to do it at 5 a.m. in a world that’s digital and more asynchronous than ever before. • If your day starts off better when your first interactions are positive ones, why not organize a quick morning huddle with peers or team members to help set the tone and get everyone on the same page? Even if your schedule isn’t completely up to you, you might get to decide when to tackle mindless chores and when to dive into creative projects, or when to read blog posts versus when to write them. You may get decide

when to have meetings that challenge your intellect versus those that require patience. The examples are many. You get the point! Consider these five questions to help reengineer your day: 1. When is my energy highest in my day? Lowest? 2. When is the best 75-minute period in my day to deep-dive by Sara Caputo into deep work? (i.e.: turning off email and phone — yes, you can!) 3. What is my ideal start/stop time in my day? 4. What would I need to change in order to start my day with “eating my frog” (i.e.: working on my highest-level task)? 5. What is one thing I can shift immediately that would have the biggest impact on my daily routine? (This may be something you need to start doing or something you need to stop doing.)

SIMPLY 805

As with many time-management strategies, the starting point is to step back, examine what we’re already doing well, where we need improvement, and what we need to do to optimize our performance. Don’t let the clock or old habits dictate your day. Only you know what will work best for you. Reengineering your day to accomplish more and maximize your efforts will be a win for everyone involved.

Sara Caputo transforms how individuals, teams, and small businesses navigate workflow and increase productivity. Her work has been featured in Working Women, Success, and Forbes, as well as other national and regional publications. She can be reached at sara@saracaputoconsulting.com.

SANTA BARBARA OFFICE MARKET DECLINES IN THIRD QUARTER

ast year saw a steep decline in leasing activity across all markets in our area but we were seeing the office sector rebound quite nicely through the first half of 2021. However, that demand has slowed in the 3rd quarter, due mainly to the rise of the Delta variant of COVID-19. There were a number of companies planning to bring their workforces back into the office that postponed those plans until early 2022. This led to a decline in the number and size of leases. Where Santa Barbara had seen office absorption in the 60,000 to 70,000 SF range over the last three quarters we saw less than 40,000 SF of absorption this quarter. Goleta also saw a drop in leasing activity this quarter down to approximately 45,000 SF. Carpinteria actually saw a nice uptick in their leasing activity but since the market is so small even a few leases can cause big swings in vacancy rates. MADHU KHEMANI

OCTOBER 14, 2021

here was a time when a home wet bar was fairly common. Mostly, it was just a simple countertop sink and cabinets in the corner of a living room, creating a convenience space where wives gathered chilled wines on weekends and husbands mixed drinks after work. Then, despite being great gathering hubs of residential entertaining (and decompressing), the home wet bar fell out of vogue. During the inevitable remodeling projects of outdated homes, wet bars were often replaced by the components of changing tastes, such as bigger TVs, stereo systems, and HEART OF THE HOME the accompanying entertainment cabinets. Recently, however, there’s been a resurgence. This wet bar comeback can give thanks in part to the popularity of craft cocktails and to the fact that during most of 2020’s pandemic peak, our favorite watering holes and by Keith Hamm restaurant bars were closed to indoor dining and drinking. Plus, something that never goes out of vogue is our timeless attraction to simply enjoying the familiar comforts of home while imbibing on the good stuff and — even better — inviting friends to join in.

JIM BARTSCH

The Wet Bar Is Back

Installed earlier this year, the pictured wet bar checks a lot of boxes, including a countertop sink, a built-in refrigerator and ice maker, and plenty of Moroccan-style cabinet space for bottles, glassware, utensils, and other essential ingredients. As a bonus, it also features a sit-down design, with a trio of bar chairs and a roomy wraparound serving counter. This wet bar is part of a two-room guest house that was previously used as a yoga studio and sleeping quarters. During the transformation, Giffin & Crane brought the guest house (and main residence) up to date with the new owners’ taste for finishes — including floors, cabinets, paint, and stucco—and bigger modifications to bathrooms and the kitchen. Where the wet bar is now used to be a closet. “In the guest house, we turned the bedroom into an office and the main living space into an entertainment room with a card-playing area, seating area, wine cellar, and that wet bar in the corner,” remembers Giffin & Crane Superintendent Jake Lewis, who oversaw the project. “It’s just a great sitting room for enjoying time with guests and listening to music.” Out the wet bar window are roses and a vegetable garden. It’s also just across the room from a pair of French doors that open to the pool patio and short chip to a private golf course. The wet bar idea was a dream of the client, who’s a wine connoisseur. Giffin & Crane worked closely with John De Bastiani Interiors to make the client’s vision a reality.

S.B. Rescue Mission’s Bayou Raises $530,000 for Substance Abuse and Homeless Programs

O

n October 2, supporters of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission (SBRM) were thrilled to gather back at Dos Pueblos Ranch for the annual Bayou event. With a Camp Out at the Bayou theme, the event raised $530,000 for the 12-month Residential Treatment Programs and Homeless Guest Services Program. The event honored Gerd Jordano. About 250 guests, many in stylish camping attire, were warmly greeted at the scenic ranch by Ranger Kim (Women’s Auxiliary past president Kim Schuck) and mingled on the grounds. Many perused a 124-item silent auction and enjoyed music by the Idiomatiques before the service of the early al fresco dinner. Another 32 guests opted to be cyber campers, with home delivery of dinner and the program via YouTube. President Rolf Geyling shared with guests how during the pandemic, along with other essential workers, the Rescue Mission staff continued its essential services — as the only provider between Ventura and Santa Maria of emergency food and shelter 365 nights of the year. Geyling explained that as Christians, Rescue Mission staff extends care to the homeless guests as a means of bringing about hope and change in their lives, and staff connects them to the Rescue Mission’s Residential Treatment Programs to address substance abuse. Geyling related how under normal circumstances, the Rescue Mission’s work is challenging, but the pandemic has put unimaginable challenges on top of the normal ones. In an interview, Geyling shared how the Rescue Mission has had to deal with COVID outbreaks, despite abiding by testing, masking, and social-distancing requirements as they are dealing with homeless guests in dormitory-style housing. A large proportion of the homeless guests served suffer from mental-health issues that require regular treatment — treatment that with the pandemic has become even more difficult for them to obtain. Geyling shared that he is shocked and very concerned about this troubling situation. This lack of treatment, in turn, creates more challenges for the Rescue Mission. Despite the difficulties, SBRM has operated throughout the pandemic, providing shelter this year to an aver-

age of 26 women and 67 men per night. These numbers are down significantly from capacity because of social distancing and segregation needs of COVID as well as the refusal by some to get tested. District Attorney Joyce Dudley presented the annual Léni Fé Bland Award to Gerd Jordano for her service to the Rescue Mission, including as longtime Bayou emcee and as a member of the $14 million capital campaign, which funded the SBRM’s extensive remodel completed in 2019. Geyling noted that the Rescue Mission receives no government funding and that its Residential Treatment Programs have incredible success: Nationally only one in five people who start a treatment program complete it, and only one of five who complete the program maintain recovery for five years. Currently, the Rescue Mission’s completion rate is 42 percent, and 53 percent maintain recovery five years out — truly remarkable success. Geyling shared that while each person’s story is one of heartbreak and suffering, there is also the staggering, collective cost of untreated addiction in terms of law enforcement, social services, incarceration, and emergency medical services. Board Chair Joyce McCullough pointed to the cost effectiveness of the Rescue Mission’s programs: Nationally, the average monthly cost for rehab is $19,000, which translates to $228,000 for a year, while the efficient, nonprofit Rescue Mission’s cost is only $25,000 for a year. A full year, McCullough noted, is necessary to deal with substance abuse. The program also included an emotional and heartwarming story by Residential Treatment Program participant John Gallagher about his path to recovery. The 71-member Women’s Auxiliary puts on the Bayou each year, with the über-dedicated Susan Hughes co-chairing every single one — 20 in all. The Auxiliary assists the Rescue Mission in multiple capacities throughout the year. Along with Homeless Guest Services, the Men’s and Women’s Residential Treatment Programs also have continued through COVID, operating at about two-

thirds capacity. Much of the intake is typically from the criminal justice system, and with the COVID-induced tapering of arrests, fewer individuals are coming through the court system into the treatment programs. Still, there were 94 individuals who participated in the program last year. For more info about the Rescue Mission or to make a donation, go to sbrm.org.
