TV Santa Barbara’s Pandemic Pivot hen TV Santa Barbara started in 1974, TV sets were as big as crates, the equipment was bulky, and the mission was to provide the community with an outlet for
self-expression. Nearly five decades later, a lot has changed in the world of public access TV—but not that core mission. “We’ve always been the one place where every member of our community can make themselves heard,” says Erik Davis, TVSB’s executive director. One of my favorite things about working as a consultant is that I get to discover and uncover so many cool businesses and resources that I otherwise wouldn’t have known anything about. TVSB is one of those clients. Erik and I worked together from the top down with his team to create more structure and systems within their current model of organization: systems that will better fit the world we are living in post-COVID. TVSB is a community gem, and I was thrilled to learn more about all the ways they support Santa Barbara through their services. In addition to running a television station where local producers create and edit programs, TVSB carries programs 24/7 on two channels, 17 and 71 (TVSB Voice and TVSB Culture), and it provides and helps to train kids in media. But when the COVID-19 panby Sara Caputo demic struck a year ago, Erik and his team found that their old way of doing business needed a big rethink. “We were a reactive, open community access organization where members came to us to create media and our model was to support them,” he says. “I knew we wanted to be of service and give back to this great community. But we needed a pandemic pivot.” One big way to pivot was to provide free services to local cultural institutions that wanted to go remote.

Last year alone, SBTV helped the Avocado Festival and Old Spanish Days Fiesta transition to online events. They were there when four area high schools needed virtual graduations and they helped connect hard-to-count populations in the 2020 Census and worked with the United Way on an online summer camp. “Last year we produced over 25 new shows and featured over 200 nonprofits in our programs,” Erik says. Here’s more from my Q&A with Erik: How do you define a successful day? For me, a successful day is one where I’m coming away with emotional
even realized it was a time-saving hack. But eating those frogs frees up my creativity and jump-starts my day. Name something you do now that you wish you had started earlier in your career? I would’ve learned to appreciate the moments and savor the process more. As I have learned even more throughout the pandemic, we don’t know what tomorrow holds, so make each day count. Appreciate everything. Also, cultivate the personal relationships and give back to the community. If you had more whitespace in your day, how would you spend that time? Sharing stories. The beauty of this job at TVSB is that we get to hear, tell, and share stories from all over the community. As executive director, I do a lot of work that isn’t creative but is necessary to keep an organization running—from IT and HR to invoicing and meetings. I’d like to carve out more whitespace to follow my passion for sharing stories through media. How do you go to the beach (metaphorically) within your day? I go to the actual beach! My happy place is the harbor, so I like to go on walks and take lunch there. Metaphorically, we have completely revamped our physical studios with color, plants, and local art, so that I am surrounding by beauty. When I arrive in the morning, I’ll put on the Jimmy Buffet or Kenny Chesney station too.
energy and excitement—where I’m pumped to think about progress and success and share the day’s stories with my wife. I like to see progress visually, and big-picture ideas coming to fruition. If I can get passionate about a project and see it underway, then my days go by quickly, and I get that jolt of success.
Bonus question! What is your ultimate productivity tool you cannot live without? My yellow 8.5 x 11 notepad. I’ve been a list person for as long as I can remember, and I like the yellow pads, which I fill with tasks all arranged in different colors and priorities. I like to cross things off my list and then re-set at the end of each Friday. That yellow pad with the to-do list is my go-to organizational tool.
What is your #1 time-saving hack? Eat the frog first! I’m a big list-making person and always try to finish the thing I least want to do first. I’d been doing that for years before I

U
pon completion of a transformative remodel in Montecito, the expansive team of creative crewmembers — from owners and designers to engineers and builders — praised the project’s dedication to detail as much as its big-picture appeal. Even before crossing the threshold of this three-bedroom, three-and-a-halfbath, single-family residence, visitors are impressed on approach. Once through a gate from the quiet street, the privacy of the front yard centers on a unique footpath that stretches across shallow water toward the home’s main entryway. Builders might call it a water walkway, nothing more than an HEART OF THE HOME elaborate fountain with special features. But it’s really an alluring illusion — the symmetrical stepping-stone slabs appear to float upon a calm pool. Along the way, by Keith Hamm
there’s a small landing to a welcoming patio and a casual living space complete with cobblestones and plenty of custommade weatherproof seating surrounding a cool fountain with a warm heart — a feature that’s part water, part fire, and all outdoor ambiance. As a whole, it makes for a lasting first impression. This welcoming front patio and walkway evolved as a collaboration of those creative forces. The homeowners had an idea. Designers and engineers translated the concept into a visible, measurable plan. Putting the pieces together, builders produced a final product. The result, much like any successful show of teamwork, exists as a creation greater than the sum of its parts. Throughout, the home showcases several innovative details. Some are on display, such as the vanishing-edge pool out back. Others are hidden, such as the kitchen island’s heated countertop. Each of them brings clarity to the overall vision of a relaxed and comforting place to call home.
DOORS OPEN: Voice-activated sliding-glass doors help create a seamless indoor-outdoor living space.
Big on automation, the homeowners rely on simple voice commands to activate that fountain out front, as well as interior heating, cooling, and lighting; motorized sliding glass doors; and the temperature of the backyard hot tub. The entire system can also be monitored and controlled via smartphone, from which the owners can conveniently adjust set-
tings from the comfort of their vaulted living room or from halfway around the world. “Just about all the interesting details in the home look simple,” says Giffin & Crane Executive Vice President Derek Shue, who managed the project. “But making it all look simple — that was very difficult.”
Giffin & Crane General Contractors, Inc. has been building custom homes in Santa Barbara since 1986.

CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS FIGHTS FOR FAIR HOUSING

he California Association of Realtors (C.A.R.) has just released their 2021 Fair Housing and Equity legislative package that will fight for fair housing and equity issues. Collaboration to Decarbonize Heavy Industry down emissions from some of the biggest emitting industries and hardest-to-abate ones. The MPP will use a four-step process in each of the seven sectors: • Convene a critical mass of progressive industry leaders to create a shared clean production vision. • Develop a roadmap to net-zero emissions by 2050. • Create commitments to action in line with the roadmap milestones, thereby embedding the roadmap in corporate strategies. • Build the metrics and standards for tracking progress and making disclosure transparent. gathers 400 companies, financial institutions, and policy innovators in the seven sectors listed above. The Partnership will build on nascent efforts to drive industry decarbonization by bringing together the fragmented ways each sector has used to date. luminum, cement, chemicals, steel, aviation, shipping, and heavy road transport account for 30 percent of global carbon emissions. These seven industrial sectors are some of the world’s largest energy consumers and most polluting industries. For transformation to occur, financial institutions seeking to move their portfolios toward net-zero carbon, i.e., green banks, need to partner with global corporations wanting to move in the same direction. The banks need reassurance that the corporations have decarbonization plans and that they relate to a meaningful standard. The common lack of embedded technical green expertise in both banking and heavy industry is frequently a barrier to moving forward. These challenges can best be addressed collectively. The Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) is a recently formed global coalition looking to accelerate the decarbonization of heavy industry and transport, and to do it fast and at scale. Among the organizations supporting this initiative are the Rocky Mountain Institute, the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Global Maritime Forum. It currently
This year, the MPP is fast-tracking three sectors—shipping, steel, and aviation — for unveiling at the UN climate summit in November 2021. At the core of these efforts is the conviction that collective action can transform the global economy through bringing together policymakers, investors, and corporate leaders.
As the U.S. government plans major investment in the by Dennis Allen country’s crumbling roads and infrastructure, it can help drive this process by setting rigorous requirements for lower-carbon steel and cement. The ubiquity of these products translates into 500 pounds of steel for every person on earth and 9,000 pounds of concrete for each of us. Both of these industries can readily cut emissions by 20 percent, and there are promising paths for each of them to get to net-zero. For example, Boston Metal, an outfit spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is using electric currents to produce steel, a process without greenhouse-gas emissions. Policies are already helping drive these changes. California is awarding contracts for state projects only to companies with the greenest of processes. New York and New Jersey are similarly incentivizing the awarding of infrastructure contracts. Dennis Allen is chair of Allen Construction, an employee-owned company committed to building and operating sustainably. He also serves as chair of the Dean’s Council at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UCSB and as a boardmember of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
