Simple To-Do List Strategies

ichard Branson said, “Critical thinking is the key to creative problem solving.” Storing problems, ideas, and to-dos in your brain will hinder your critical thinking and cause stress. So if you are looking to relieve stress, then emptying your head out consistently and in a reliable place is the antidote. When we hold information in our he ads, it clutters up our by Sara Caputo thinking. Getting rid of mental clutter frees us up to focus on the important things. I have always been a pen-and-paper person. At 8 years old, I tucked a large cardboard box upside down between my bed and the wall to serve as a desk. On top, I put a big ol’ mug of random pens along with a fresh, clean notepad. I don’t remember exactly what I did there, but I do remember great when I could sit down and write in that notepad. My love of writing things down was

SIMPLY 805

probably born there on Union Street in Mora, Minnesota. Fast-forward 30-ish years, and now I am a productivity coach helping others find their own groove with a pad of paper and pen. One of the main components of my consulting business is working with people on how to get stuff out of their heads and onto paper. I help people create actionable, realistic, doable to-do lists in a way that moves them toward execution. While we have ample digital to-do list options, at the end of the day, most people end up gravitating toward paper and pen. Technology definitely has its place in the to-do-list world. The problem, however, with many of the available productivity methods and systems is that people frequently waste more time setting these systems up and figuring out how to work them than actually getting work done. Many people, myself included, are “hybrid to-do list makers” — using a mix of paper and digital for their list system. I keep a master project list on Evernote (digital) and my weekly/ daily lists on paper. This approach works well for me, but everyone needs

Here are my simple to-do list rules: 1. Dump your head out on the paper. Best to do it before you go to bed at night! Write down everything, and if it needs to live on another list, put it on that other list so you end with an actionable, realistic list for your day. Review that “other” list once a week to keep items moving onto your daily list. 2. Keep your list visible, handy, in front of you, and mobile. 3. Find a pen you really like to keep with your pad. Believe me, this helps. 4. Find something other than a boring yellow legal pad for your actionable list. Nothing says “don’t do this” more than a generic yellow pad. 5. Cross off as you go. Recap the day and rewrite for the next day to start fresh.

to find what works best for themselves. Most important is to find what moves you toward action, which is the actual point of the to-do list system in the first place. The physical act of writing stimulates the brain’s reticular activating system (RAS), which processes information and gives importance to what is written down. In her book Write It Down, Make It Happen, Henriette Anne Klauser maintains that “writing triggers the RAS, which in turn sends a signal to the cerebral cortex: ‘Wake up! Pay attention! Don’t miss this detail!’ Once you write down a goal, your brain will be working overtime to see you get it, and will alert you to the signs and signals that were there all the time.” I don’t know of a more effective alternative to the simplicity of writing a list and crossing off tasks once

completed. Crossing things off might just be the best feeling in the world! Digitally clicking a box just does not provide the same feeling of satisfaction and completion. For most, the biggest mistake when it comes to writing a to-do list is creating only one list. Think of your to-do list as a living document. Each day brings different ebbs and flows; these tides dictate continuous list updates and rewrites. Try this for starters: Clear your head out onto a piece of paper. Let the thoughts, tasks, and to-dos flow onto the page. After you have a good list in front of you, categorize it. Break items into a master project list (requiring multiple steps; definitely won’t be done today, tomorrow, or this week) and a daily to-do list (can be realistically accomplished today).

Sara Caputo transforms how individuals, teams, and small businesses navigate workflow and increase productivity. Her work has been featured in Working Women, Success, and Forbes, as well as other national and regional publications. She can be reached at sara@saracaputoconsulting.com.

INDEPENDENT REAL ESTATE

Real estate industry news leader RISMedia has released their annual Real Estate Newsmakers competition, honoring real estate agents who have made impacts in their communities and profession. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties placed four agents among the class of 2021 Real Estate Newsmakers, including local real estate agent Avi Becker. Becker was recognized in the “Inspirations” category. His award states: After selling just one home in 2019, his first year in the business, Avi made a huge turnaround in 2020, hitting his goal of $20 million in volume. When the pandemic hit, he ensured community support, focusing on keeping local businesses lively, by creating the Facebook group Support Santa Barbara Biz Online. The group boasts over 7,000 members, who share products, services, links, and business referrals in the region. The Inspirations category recognizes charitable efforts and philanthropy, to include community involvement and disaster relief. Becker is part of The Santa Barbara Group, along with

Joe Parker and Garrett McCaw. In addition to creating the facebook group, they also produce videos and interviews highlighting small businesses and restaurants that have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. “I feel so blessed and grateful to get to live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world,” stated Becker. “Santa Barbara is a tight-knit community and we have each others’ back. When times are tough, we pull together and pick each other up knowing that better times are ahead of us. The reason I wake up inspired and energized every day is I know I get to help amazing people establish roots here, and I feel honored to receive this award!” Kyle Kemp, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Regional Vice President for Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, said “I’m thrilled that Avi was singled out for his community contributions. His business success is commendable, but equally impressive is his commitment to helping other organizations succeed, especially in this tumultuous year.” Approximately 300 Newsmakers earned a place on the list. Along with Becker, the three others from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California are the following:

Grid-Scale Battery Storage Is Taking Off

T

he Moss Landing Power Plant was, until recently, California’s largest electric power station. This former gas generator is now being pulled out of mothballs and transformed into California’s (and for a short period, the world’s) largest utility-scale battery. Its 300-megawatt lithium-ion battery is ready to come online, with another 100-megawatt battery to start working by mid-year. At the same facility, Tesla is providing even

more storage, 182.5 megawatts’ worth, also by mid-2021. The combined capacity will be able to supply power to every house in San Francisco for six hours. San Diego, Long Beach, and the Bay Area are adding utility-size storage this year as well. A 2013 bill set a state target of 1.325 gigawatts (1,000 megawatts) of storage for the state’s grid by 2020. California has met and exceeded this goal. Not surprisingly, California leads the world in high-

capacity batteries. Four factors are driving this development: (1) steeply falling battery prices, (2) technological progress, (3) California’s carbon-free electrical grid mandate by 2045, and (4) tax incentives for storage systems. Other places in the country and world are close on California’s heels, however. Chile, Saudi Arabia, England, New York, Florida, and Lithuania all have 100-plus-megawatt-battery storage developments scheduled for completion this year. The mass deployment of storage most likely will overcome one of the biggest obstacles to renewable energy — cycling between oversupply when the sun shines or the wind blows, and shortage when the sun sets or the wind calms. By leveling out the imbalances between supply and demand, gas-fired “peaker” plants that only run for a few hours, when demand peaks, will be phased out. Edison is shutting down three “peaker” plants in Oxnard, and another that was planned for there has been scrapped. The price tag for utility-scale battery storage in the U.S. fell 70 percent between 2015 and 2018 (U.S. Energy Information Administration) and is projected to drop another 45 percent in the coming years. This parallels the price drop we witnessed

with solar panels, largely due to technological advances and economies of scale from mass production. Some estimate that at least 30 gigawatts of large-scale storage will be needed in California to reach the clean-grid 2045 goal. Adding storage makes renewable energy more profitable. Wesley Cole with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory says, “One of the challenges of renewable energy is the more you put on the grid, the more the value declines. Storage helps deal with that by soaking up excess energy that would have been lost in the middle of the day, when electricby Dennis Allen ity demand is lower, and moving it to a time when it is more valuable.” Lithium-ion batteries have a head start in grid-scale applications, but other batteries are also proving capable. Recent developments are making some inexpensive, long-lived, and safe, and in some cases easily scalable.

Now, why this long story? There are discussions in Sacramento of extending the sales and use taxes to services, such as delivering architectural and engineering services. There is roughly $1.7 billion of retail sales in Santa Barbara County annually that generate the sales tax from which local government is dependent. It will be many times this if the current sales tax is levied upon business offering services only. The American Institute of Architects and its California Chapters are opposed to further taxation upon business, specifically

the architectural profession. While there is no pending legislation, we encourage you to express your view to your elected officials and join the AIA in opposition to this as a solution to state and local funding shortfalls.

INDEPENDENT REAL ESTATE

The basic taxation principles are nearly as old as human society itself — stretching thousands of years into the past. Several ancient civilizations, including the Greeks and Romans, levied taxes on their citizens to pay for military expenses and other public services. Taxation evolved as empires expanded and civilizations became more structured. The earliest known tax records, dating from approximately six thousand years BCE, are in the form of clay tablets found in the ancient city-state of Lagash in modern-day Iraq, according to a publication on AMANJ.com. This early form of taxation was minimized, except during periods of conflict or hardship. Most citizens were subject to a poll tax, a flat tax on every adult in a jurisdiction, and property and church taxes.

When the United States was founded, the federal government levied relatively few taxes. The country did not maintain a significant military force during times of peace. Instead, it relied on local militiamen to protect marauders and local rebellions, which led to the Second Amendment’s creation and the right to bear arms. The federal government was also much smaller than it is now and required much less money to operate. The first federal income tax in the United States was created shortly after the Civil War to pay for that costly internal conflict and its debts. The federal government levies a significant portion of the total tax burden in the United States. However, provincial and other local authorities can also enforce additional taxes within their jurisdiction. Retailers engaged in business in California must pay the state’s sales tax, which applies to all retail sales of goods and merchandise except those exempted explicitly by law. The use tax generally applies to the storage, use, or other California consumption of goods purchased from retailers in transactions not subject to the sales tax.

State sales and use taxes provide revenue to the state’s General Fund, cities and counties through specific state fund allocations, and other local jurisdictions.
