How is life in Trump’s D.C.? Generally, Trump has fueled the resistance in D.C. Anti-Trump posters and flyers and bumper stickers are plastered throughout an otherwise fairly progressive city. Most Trump political appointees reportedly live by the wharf in newer apartment buildings. \ What was “insurrection day” like? Like most Americans, I spent insurrection day plastered to my TV — in my English basement, which I affectionately call the bunker, a couple miles from the Capitol. A couple colleagues were at the Capitol and sent updates via Slack. I was tempted to bike down there, but after repeated iPhone alerts, I opted against it.

Early the next morning, I went for a ride and was shocked to find everything sparkling clean and empty, save for a couple of trucks with Texas license plates and a few loyalists wearing red cowboy hats with “Trump” embroidered across the top. The rioters didn’t stay long.

ne of the greater challenges of vaccine distribution isn’t administering the actual doses but sharing information about the vaccines to the public.

“The communications about the vaccinations have been really challenging because of the structure of the description of the system,” 2nd District Supervisor Gregg Hart said. “If we start off with jargon, with tiers and 1A and 1B and C, people will never catch up. They’ll never be comfortable with the system.”

Beyond the jargon Hart referenced, vaccine rollout has more challenges in Santa Barbara. Many seniors ages 75 and older, who are in the next group of people to receive vaccines, are anxious to make their appointments. Because of the state’s vaccine guidance, those wishing to make their appointments ahead of time don’t yet have the option to do so.

COVID-19 CONTINUES TO SOAR

As it turns out, Santa Barbara County is doing pretty well.

The state has given about 27 percent of its vaccine doses out, and nationally the average is about 30 percent. Santa Barbara County, on the other hand, has distributed 54 percent of its vaccines.

So when can the next group start lining up to take their vaccines? Early February. Although appointments can’t be made right now, those who are over 75 can be sure their turn is on the way. Do-Reynoso explained that while notifying people of their vaccine eligibility via their employer was successful with the first group, many in the next group are retired.

So, they will be notified of their turn via their primary care doctor and can also get their vaccine at retail pharmacies. Public Health vaccination sites will also be set up throughout the county. She also said that Public Health is developing mobile clinics to offer vaccines in specific locations to specific populations, such as senior housing or farmworkers.

Those with questions on their eligibility can email vaccine@ sbcphd.org or dial 2-1-1. The county staffed eight employees to answer calls, and Public Health has two full-time employees working to answer emails about vaccines.

But not all had concerns about their vaccine eligibility. Some had fears of the opposite.

“I have some different concerns than my colleagues,” said 4th District Supervisor Bob Nelson. “Some of my constituents are concerned about the vaccination being mandatory at some point. Is there any talk of that?”

This was Nelson’s first meeting after taking over the seat from his previous boss, former Supervisor Peter Adam. He represents a more conservative district in the county. Do-Reynoso told him that it is not mandatory because it is under emergency-use authorization. Once it has full FDA approval, in two years or so, she anticipates that it will be a different conversation and it will be left up to employers.

Fifth District Supervisor Steve Lavagnino wondered when vaccines would be enough to “go back to normal, whatever that means.”

Despite the fact that vaccine rollout is going well in Santa Barbara, the county is still exploding with COVID-19 cases. Over the past four weeks since the holidays, there has been an “astronomical” increase in the county’s adjusted case rate, which now stands at 64, Do-Reynoso said. Testing positivity increased by 114 percent over the past four weeks, and the county’s intensivecare-unit capacity is hovering around 11 percent.

Contact tracers have determined that the majority of those who have the virus work in office settings, are under 18, or are retired/unemployed. This only captures 41 percent of the surge data because contact tracers are still interviewing the COVID19-positive individuals.

First District Supervisor Das Williams was concerned about which individuals are traveling to the county and possibly bringing the virus with them. It is mandatory for out-of-state visitors to quarantine for 10 days, although Santa Barbara does not have a message to visitors saying such.

“Could we do a better job of letting people know [to quarantine]?” Williams asked. “It’s a big deal at L.A. County, and they apparently let people know at airports.”

Public Health Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg agreed with Williams and said more targeted messaging would be good, though he didn’t give an example or say how that messaging could be rolled out to visitors.

TESTING

Though mass testing was a difficult feat in the beginning of the pandemic, testing for the virus has mushroomed, and the county is at an all-time testing capacity high. There are 1,173 testing opportunities in the county per day.

Public Health opened its first mobile testing site Monday at CenCal Health in Santa Barbara. It can administer 538 tests per day alone. It will be open from Monday through Friday for a minimum of two weeks before moving to a new location in the county. To schedule an appointment, see lhi.care/covidtesting.

Off the Charts

T

his week, Santa Barbara’s COVID-19 cases shot off the charts — literally. “Our numbers increased by so much that we had to adjust the axes and the scales of the charts and maps,” said Dr. Van Do-Reynoso, the county’s public health director at a press conference.

Santa Barbara’s Third and Worst Wave, By the Numbers Active cases in this third and worst wave of the virus are by far the highest they’ve been since the start of the pandemic, exploding to 2,895 on Tuesday, compared to just 241 during the peak of the first wave last spring and 444 in the summer surge.

The death count surpassed 200, reaching 207 on Tuesday. That’s a more than 50 percent increase since November 1. Hospitalizations and ICU admissions are at new record levels as well, with 211 and 57 patients, respectively, now receiving emergency care.

Of the county’s 598 hospital beds, 427 (or 71 percent) are currently in use by

both COVID and non-COVID patients.

The Health Department’s high-alert Red Zone was breached at 65 percent. Of the 89 staffed adult ICU beds, 80 (or 90 percent) are occupied. That Red Zone was broken at 80 percent.

While North County bore the brunt of the virus at the beginning of our regional outbreak, South County is now just as proportionally inundated. The majority of cases have been detected in those between the ages of 18 and 49. Racial disparities in all outcomes are stark.

Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties are reporting similarly high numbers, while Los Angeles County grapples with its own uncontrolled outbreaks that are forcing health officials to ration care. Santa Barbara doctors fear it’s just a matter of time before they too are completely overwhelmed.

They’ve expressed extreme frustration with residents who continue to flout orders to limit contact and travel, especially those who threw caution to the wind during the holidays.

by Nick Welsh he message was grim. But what else could anyone expect in the age of COVID? Members of the Santa Barbara Tenants Union and CAUSE, hosting an outdoor press conference by the Santa Barbara Courthouse on Wednesday, warned that millions of California renters —through no fault of their own—could find themselves subject to legal eviction within two weeks unless new legislation is passed in Sacramento.

The tenants protection bill — so agonizingly hammered out this past summer — will expire as of February 1, meaning landlords can evict tenants who can’t afford to pay their rent because of COVID-related loss of income. One month after that, those same tenants will also be subject to small claims actions for unpaid back rent.

The COVID crisis has not gotten better, the speakers pointedly noted; it’s gotten much worse. Even so, tenants who have not paid at least 25 percent of rent owed over a four-month period will be subject to eviction unless new protections are enacted.

the legislation — as an urgency measure — will require a two-thirds super majority, they both warned any final measure would be subject to significant compromises at the bargaining table. Something, they predicted, would get approved. The prospect of thousands of tenants rendered homeless, they acknowledged, posed not just a humanitarian crisis, but in the time of COVID, a public health threat.

If passed as written, AB 15 would extend the eviction protections that now exist by 12 months. SB 3 would only extend those protections through March.

Everyone is at the bargaining table, Limón said, where the contest is all about time and money. Landlords, she said, have gone without rent for many months. But many tenants simply can’t afford to pay. About the only thing both sides agree upon, she said, is that “a big bucket of money” would help.

There’s talk of $2 billion in federal assistance for tenants economically displaced by COVID, but it’s anyone’s guess how much of that would go to California. “Do we split it up by state? Do we split it up based on population? Or do we split it up based on the number of renters?” she asked. “No one knows.” Governor Gavin Newsom has included $5 million for tenants’ assistance in his proposed budget, but that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the epic scale of the need.

Limón said she hears of some landlords being pushed to the brink, but many, she said, have been offered some forms of mortgage forbearance by their lenders.

They’re squeaking by. “It’s the tenants we’re hearing about. They’re up against it. Not only have they lost their jobs, but then they have to deal with the EDD nightmare.”

Politically, Limón said, something has to budge. “All 120 legislators have landlords in their districts, and they have tenants,” Limón said. “This is something everyone is feeling.” The landlord lobby has reportedly made it clear it would prefer to deal with one statewide measure as opposed to hundreds of protections enacted by cities and counties throughout the state. How that flies has yet to be seen.

Both Bennett and Limón are keenly aware that the clock is ticking. Only a couple weeks remain and a two-thirds majority is required.

If and when a deal is reached, Limon is confident of one thing. “Neither side is going to be jumping up and down.” n

“Paying this amount is harder than it seems,” said one speaker. Federal supplemental unemployment payments ran out, and many never qualified for such help in the first place. Families, the speakers warned, could find themselves on the street as the pandemic rages. To prevent this, they called on State Senator Monique Limón and Assemblymember Steve Bennett to support Assembly Bill 15, introduced in December by Assemblymember David Chiu, who led the charge for Assembly Bill 3088, the eviction protection bill about to expire.

Bennett and Limón have already announced they support AB 15. Limón has also expressed support for another measure, Senate Bill 3, considerably weaker in its protections than AB 15. Bennett and Limón made it clear something had to pass in Sacramento. And fast. But given that

As we get sucked irresistibly into the vortex of an impeachment fight against Donald J. Trump , the American Mussolini , we need to take serious heed.

Despite claims to the contrary by people who should know better, it is not remotely possible — not in even the most theoretical of universes — that we can miraculously bifurcate our focus , spending half the day focusing on COVID and other challenges facing the new Biden administration and the other half on the high crimes and misdemeanors of which Trump is undeniably guilty .

Trump’s destructive genius has been his ability to pick fights that Democrats couldn’t hope to win but could not in good conscience walk away from, either.

No sentient being could. But there’s a steep price to be paid for not doing so.

My point is not that we do nothing or that we give Trump a pass. My point is that there might be other, simpler solutions in plain sight that guarantee Donald Trump can and will never run for elected office again . That, after all, is the point, isn’t it?

Given how COVID has achieved full thermonuclear meltdown status , we don’t have the luxury of waging what appears to be an unwinnable impeachment fight , no matter how righteous, just, and compelling. Even with many promi14

Lost somewhere in this jumble of mortality statistics is my father-in-law , a complicated and heroic spirit. As I write this, we now have 2,895 active cases . By the time you read this, we will have more.

Of those, 211 are sick enough to warrant hospitalization. Of those, 57 are in the ICU. Health professionals don’t freak.

They’re freaking.

Let’s be clear. Trump incited the violence that led to last week’s attack on the Capitol by well-organized rightwing militias and the mob looters who were only too willing to get swept up in the wake of their mayhem. As Congressmember Liz Cheney said in explaining her support for impeaching Trump, “He lit the fuse.” It’s perversely apt, I suppose, that the 42-year-old police officer killed while defending the Capitol would be beaten over the head by an assailant wielding a fire extinguisher . But metaphors don’t kill.

Neither, typically, do fire extinguishers. Mobs do.

When Joe Biden is sworn in as president next week, his inauguration will take place accompanied by 15,000 National Guard members . They will be wearing Kevlar vests able to withstand armor-piercing bullets. They will be armed with M9 handguns. It will be a police state. The FBI, in the meantime, has briefed Congress on multiple rightwing plots to gun them down. The cost of bulletproof vests, they were told, was

after the white-wing mob stormed the chambers — I’m far from confident a conviction is possible, let alone likely.

Even so, I think Trump is toast . But as an avid fan of vampire movies, I recognize he needs a stake pounded through his heart , lest he come back after the sun goes down. To accomplish that, we don’t need impeachment. We don’t even need criminal prosecution.

The 14th Amendment , it turns out, already contains explicit language that can

The 14th Amendment, for those who have forgotten, was passed in 1868, shortly after the Civil War, and bestows all the rights of full citizenship on anyone born in the United States. It was enacted with former slaves in mind, but Trump has hated it because it also confers full American citizenship status on the children of immigrants who crossed the border illegally.

For our purposes, Article 3 of the 14th Amendment is where the action is. It was written to punish Confederate generals and politicians who rose up against the United States by preventing them from ever holding elected office. In cumbersome and clunky but comprehensive and all-encompassing legal lingo, the 14th Amendment states that no one can hold “any office” — state or federal — who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion ” against the United States or who gave “aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

Bringing this to light was Eric Foner , one of the truly great historians and an expert on the aftermath of the Civil War. To date, this provision has been invoked only one time in American history. It was used to bar Victor Berger, a Milwaukee socialist elected to Congress in 1918, from taking his seat. Berger was then indicted under the Espionage Act of 1917 because he had the temerity to oppose World War I. “You got nothing out of the war but the flu and prohibition,” he would say, referring to great flu pandemic of 1918 that killed 50 million people worldwide.

If the 14th Amendment could be used to get rid of someone like Berger from the office he won in a certified fair election, them clearly it could be invoked to prevent Trump from ever getting on the ballot again.

The final words say it all: “The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

We don’t have the mental energy to waste on futile exercises. People are dying.

If you want to hit Trump where it hurts, throw the 14th at him. That’s my two cents. Then let’s move on.

anana Republic despots have been known to incite riots in order to disrupt the legitimate independent function of legislatures. Verbal and physical intimidation of elected officials is not uncommon in “failed states,” but the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America had never been invaded by a mob incited by the President of the United States until Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

Both as candidate and president, Donald Trump has repeatedly warned about the imminent existential threat posed by caravans of foreign asylum seekers approaching our borders. In contrast, he has repeatedly downplayed the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and right-wing domestic terrorists. He has encouraged the spread of the virus, false allegations of election fraud, and right-wing extremists.

On Wednesday he sent this weaponized mix to the Capitol in order to disrupt a purely “pro forma” ceremonial announcement of the election results.

He sought to overturn the previously recounted, litigated, and certified election of his successor.

Until Wednesday, our nation was recognized around the world for a peaceful transition of executive power. Despot Donald was aided and abetted in this riotous disruption by 139 members of the House and eight members of the Senate who demonstrated their allegiance to him, rather than the legislative branch or the Constitution. They chose to honor his personal banner that members of his mob had hung on the Capitol and the Confederate flag of insurrection and succession they had paraded through the Capitol, rather than the “Stars and Stripes” of our republic.

Fortunately, the mob did not burn down the Capitol, as Hitler burned down the Reichstag to consolidate his power, or the British did in the War of 1812, but they were equipped with weapons, bombs, and incendiaries to do so, and at least five Americans died in the president’s personal attack on our democracy. At this time, it is difficult to know or calculate all the damage that this narcissistic demagogue has inflicted on our democracy.

It turns out that the “wall” we needed was not the destructive, superfluous boondoggle photo-op along the border. It was a wall around the Capi-

tol and our democratic institutions. The “caravan” we needed to fear was not the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to be free. It was the mob of domestic extremists brainwashed and incited by the presi—Lansing Duncan, Solvang dent himself.

Make Your Voice Heard: Speak

I

have written every president since Nixon with recommendations for their administrations whether I voted for them or not, and that is what I recommend that any Trump supporters do also so your voice is heard. Make sure you voice your concerns and propose realistic solutions. If you want your voice heard — speak.

Trump filed 63 legal cases about voter fraud; all cases were thrown out for lack of evidence. Nobody has ever had that many cases thrown out due to lack of evidence. All of the attorneys who filed Trump’s cases with no evidence are now facing the possibility of disbarment. I have read some of the filings and found no evidence presented that would support any voter fraud. The state certifications, many by Republicans, have also not found any fraud that would have changed the results. Trump lost; it is that simple. For Trump to state anything different is fraud. To put in the simplest terms: Donald Trump Lied. Whether you voted for Donald Trump or not, to advocate the overthrow of the government over false fraud claims is criminal.

So, it is time to move on and work with the Biden administration.

We as a nation must start dealing with major issues, COVID-19 being the most pressing. Had Trump dealt with COVID-19 in January or February of 2020, most of the people who have passed away from COVID would still be alive today.

The United States is fast becoming a third-world country. I have traveled to Western and Eastern Europe and Asia and found that the United States has fallen far behind every other major industrialized country in the world. The common things found in those countries is universal health care, universal education, universal safety net. It is time that we come together for our common good for a better United States for all citizens.

9/15/1924 - 12/18/2020

The amazing Lois Allison (lovingly know as Gaga to friends and family) age 96 passed away 12/18/ 2020 peacefully of natural causes at Sarah House (hospice home) in Santa Barbara, California. Born 9/15/1924 in Staten Island New York to Gladys and Frank Foggin. During WWII Lois joined the Cadet Nurse Corps and graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in NYC. She married Bill Allison in 1950 and the couple moved to Syracuse, N.Y. where their two children Nan and Glen were born. She had a long career as an RN which included nursing instruction, counseling at Planned Parenthood and volunteering at an Episcopal medical clinic in Honduras.

In 1976 Lois made the move west to live in Sun Valley, Seattle and Santa Barbara. Lois was famous as the creator of “Sun Valley Mustard” in 1984 and recognized as a talented artist spanning 40+ years. She loved painting outdoors and captured flowers, mountains, rivers and animals in pastel and watercolor.

Her work was shown locally in Idaho and California and did numerous commissions of friend’s beloved pets. Lois often packed her effervescent smile and sketch book to travel many places around the globe.

She made friends everywhere, capturing people and places in creative writing and art journals.

Lois was active in sports; tennis, golf, downhill and cross-country skiing, biking, even lawn bowling and especially swimming.

She loved beaches and was an avid pool swimmer into her 90’s!

Her enthusiasm and enduring positive spirit kept her active and social with friends and fellow artists in Santa Barbara in her later years. Lois loved a party.

Being involved with Santa Barbara social and dining clubs ,art groups and volunteering kept her calendar full. Her family and friends will miss her dearly, but will strive to follow her example and embody her zest for life.

Preceded in death by husband Bill Allison (1974) and sister Nancy Jordan. Lois is survived by daughter, Nan Allison-Stone, husband Larry Stone, and grandson Travis.

Jessie P Monk, 90, of Ventura, CA passed away on December 31, 2020. Jessie was born in Fifeshire, Scotland April 18, 1930 to John and Mary Murray. She left there at the age 20 to enlist in the Royal Air Force and served two years in England. It was there she met and married her husband, Ray, who specialized in aerial photography. They had two children, a boy, and a girl before immigrating to the United States to live in Santa Barbara in 1961. In 1964 another daughter was born.

She worked nine years for Santa Barbara Coastal Lemon Company, then 20 years for Santa Barbara Research Center in Goleta before retiring. She lived in Santa Barbara forty years then moved to Ventura in 2002. She loved square dancing, dress making and playing piano.

Later, she and Ray lovingly cared for the city rose gardens in Santa Barbara and Ventura. She also loved knitting afghans and hundreds of baby blankets for family, friends, and children in crisis.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 53 years, sister, and 14-day old daughter.

She will be missed and is survived by brother Stanley (Kathleen) of Scotland, son Douglas Monk, daughter Carole Trainer (Kevin), daughter Sharon Clack (Tim), three grandsons Ryan Tanner (Katrina), Timothy Clack, William Clack, and great granddaughter Charlotte Tanner.

At her request no services will take place. In her memory, donations may be made to Foodshare – Ventura County.

James Robert Van Wagner 7/29/1927 - 1/6/2021

James Robert (“Bob”) Van Wagner passed away peacefully at his home on January 6, 2021 at the age of 93. Born in Santa Monica, CA, Bob was a proud World War II veteran who joined the US Navy at the age of 17. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer and deployed to the Western Pacific before his honorable discharge in 1946. After leaving the Navy, he attended Santa Monica City College where he studied to become an electrician. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1955 and met his wife, Barbara Hansen, from Beloit, WI. They married in 1956 and have remained in Santa Barbara ever since, raising two children: Ginger and Barry.

Bob worked for nearly 30 years at Point Mugu Pacific Missile Test Center in Port Hueneme. There he rubbed shoulders with Government photographers who supplied him with photos rarely seen publicly of visiting presidents and other dignitaries. He loved to share these photos with friends. Probably a surprise to many who didn’t know Bob well, or who’d experienced his crushing handshake, was his soft heart for any animal, especially animals in distress.

But every weekend – and during the week if he could get away with it – Bob was a devoted East Beach volleyball fixture. “Set me!” and “It’s Point Time!” were his favorite sayings. From early days in Santa Monica, then at Hermosa and Redondo Beaches, he fell in love with the sport of beach volleyball. When he arrived in Santa Barbara, beach volleyball and the abundant courts at East Beach became his passion. Bob especially enjoyed chronicling the beach volleyball scene through his amazing photographs, with many photos freely given to anyone who asked. He was a long-time tournament director for the Semana Nautica annual volleyball open and an accredited US Volleyball Association referee and umpire.

In November 2019, Bob was inducted into the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame, a crowning achievement for his lifelong passion.

Bob is survived by those he loved: his wife Barbara; his two children Ginger and Barry (Emily); a half-brother Gary (Jan) in Newark, TX; and two half-sisters Anita (Frank –

deceased) and Marilyn (Ken) in Homedale, ID and Vista, CA, respectively.

No services are planned at this time due to the pandemic.

Don Pancho passed peacefully on Christmas morning at home in the presence of family. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the burial will be private and a celebration of life is planned when circumstances allow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Francisco Andrade’s name to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara or the Santa Barbara High School Soccer Program.

William (Bill) Varney

If you were a resident of the Eastside of Santa Barbara, had a connection with the Central Coast Soccer league or avocado harvesting over the last 60 years, there’s a good chance you knew Francisco Andrade or “Don Pancho”. He had a quiet, kind, and generous presence. There was often a line of young men at his front door asking for a loan, to play soccer, or to join one of his avocado harvesting crews. Some people serve as glue for their community. Don Pancho was one of those people.

Don Pancho was born in 1935 in the town of Jalpa de Canovas in Guanajuato, Mexico.

From 1959-1961, he participated in the Bracero program as an agricultural laborer working in Oregon, Florida and California.

In 1962, Don Pancho settled permanently in Santa Barbara and married his wife Eugenia, also a Guanajuato native. He began his own avocado harvesting business in 1980 and was able to serve his community, providing work to many men supporting their families. His passion for soccer and community led Don Pancho to establish San Nicolas Soccer Club in 1963, which was still active until last March at the start of the pandemic. Through San Nicolas, Don Pancho supported thousands of soccer players in Santa Barbara and beyond, and could be found at the northern fence at Dwight Murphy Field on any Sunday afternoon.

Don Pancho and two of his brothers owned “Las Conchas” restaurant and bar, a gathering spot for locals from 1975 to 2013.

In recent years, Don Pancho took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great

(Bill) Varney died peacefully December 10, 2020, at Villa Alamar, Santa Barbara, where he had lived his last seven years, in the final stages of 26 years of deterioration from Parkinson’s disease. Born August 23, 1942, in Pennsylvania, Bill spent his youth in Pasadena, and lived his remaining years in Santa Barbara, where he obtained a Ph.D. in political science, and Washington, DC, where he worked for the World Bank. He met Bill W in 1966. Bill taught himself shorthand, and used it to take dictation at the bank. Bill also taught himself to read and write Russian; he even subscribed to a Russian newspaper, although he never visited - or wanted to visit - the country. While never married, Bill had many devoted friends from Pasadena, Santa Barbara, and Washington. Bill considered Max, Susan, and Carla Neufeldt his family, and he lived with them for many years while in Santa Barbara.

At dinnertime he would eat with the Neufeldt family; he always appreciated everything cooked, especially since when he was on his own, he lived on a diet of hot dogs and frozen mixed vegetables, warmed by hot water from the tap. Bill loved animals but was allergic to cats, so he would pet the family cat with his foot, eliciting purrs. He was quite attached to his friend Linda Liker-Taylor's dog, Duke, who visited him at Villa Alamar, where Bill could pet him. Bill had a ready sense of humor and deep loyalty to his many friends.

He, as he was then, is sorely missed by his friends.

Steven Ken Ota (“Sensei Steve”) of the renowned Ota family of the Judo/Aikido Cultural and Ballroom Dancing School in Goleta, CA passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov 1, 2020 from lung cancer at the assisted living facility Casa Los Padres in Santa Barbara.

Steve was born on Oct 7, 1948 at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara to Kenji Ota of Lompoc and Miyeko (Miye) Tachihara Ota of Santa Maria, both survivors of the Japanese American internment camp in Gila, AZ during World War II. Steve’s parents settled in Goleta after a brief period in Philadelphia.

Steve attended Goleta Union Elementary School, Goleta Valley Junior High School and San Marcos High School.

Steve grew up with a life enriched by his parents’ firm teachings – many principles borrowed from the martial arts based on mutual respect, character, discipline, responsibility, manners, and hard work. In high school, Steve began judo training with his father, first on a sawdust floor covered with canvas, and later on tatami mats at the newly constructed dojo.

In 1969, Steve attended college at San Jose State University where he majored in Physical Education. While at San Jose State, he became a member of the University’s esteemed judo team and was awarded a judo black belt for his winning record in major tournaments.

In the 1970’s Steve traveled to Japan to train and learn Aikido (“Ki”) under the tutelage of the great master sensei Koichi Tohei.

He received and earned his aikido black belt.

Steve’s martial arts career was long and successful which earned him nidan (second) degree black belt in judo and was one of the highest-ranking sensei instructors in the US in Shinshin Toitsu Aikido (aikido with Ki) and ending up as a rokudan (seventh degree black belt), and shinhan (master instructor). He continued teaching aikido until his cancer diagnosis.

Steve became an instructor and co-teacher with his father for decades, teaching martial arts and ballroom dancing to

young children and college students at UCSB, Cal Poly, and SBCC. Ballroom dancing was Steve’s second passion. He was happiest while ballroom dancing and country line dancing.

Steve met the cancer ordeal of chemotherapy and radiation with courage, will, and his trademark sense of humor. His Dojo brothers Bill Buckner and Carlos Prat, and Dojo sisters Susan Baar and Olivia Gore surrounded him with loving kindness, support, and encouragement. Steve was reminded of often repeated words of affirmation, instilled in him originally by his father Ken. “Never give up.” “Gentleness is stronger than strength.” “Don’t try, just do it.”

When Steve was once asked what it was like to be a black belt martial arts master. He replied, “the essence for me is that it is the art of peace”.

Steve is survived by his mother, Miye Ota. He is interred at Santa Barbara Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held later.

Neil Christopher Muller 1/28/1985 - 12/12/2020

Neil Christopher Muller, 35 Born January 28, 1985 in Lexington KY. Died unexpectedly of a previously undetected heart condition on December 12, 2020 in Sisters OR. Neil was born in Lexington KY to parents Kris and Bob Muller. His childhood was spent in Kentucky with his older brother, Jon, in a great community with people who became lifelong friends. While they resided in Kentucky, Neil and his family made regular forays West for camping and hiking in national parks, which later led to Neil’s backpack trips in the Rockies, Hansen family reunions, and visiting grandparents and cousins in CA. Neil attended Lexington Co-op Preschool, Stonewall Elementary School, and Lexington Christian Academy before moving with his parents to Santa Barbara CA. He was a proud alum of Dunn

School (2004) in Los Olivos CA and the University of Redlands (2008) in southern California.

He played baseball and other sports for the Earwigs and played on the Redlands Bulldog baseball team for four years.

He was an enthusiastic, good hearted, playful, loving family member; a caring friend and excellent teammate; and a fierce Nutsy competitor. He loved golf, the San Francisco Giants, and Kentucky basketball – not necessarily in that order. He was a happy guy, but he was happiest when Sara came into his life.

Neil and Sara married in 2015 and lived briefly in Bethesda MD until a downsizing of their company resulted in an unexpected opportunity to move West, closer to extended family.

Neil’s outgoing nature and work ethic helped transition his career to nonprofit organizations, where he was fortunate to have wonderful colleagues and one special mentor. His work was in development and fundraising in the SF Bay Area – at Junipero Serra High School, United Way Bay Area, and most recently Children’s Health Council (CHC).

Neil’s joie de vivre left everyone he met in a better place.

He never met a stranger. But his family – Sara and their two young boys, Mason and Ryan – were his world. He was a hands-on dad from the start and engaged his boys in everything – daily nature walks, baking together, swim lessons, always reading, and even science experiments. In 2020, during the pandemic, Neil and Sara each worked remotely which afforded extended sojourns in Santa Barbara CA and in Sisters OR – time together which both sets of parents cherish.

Survivors include his wife Sara Swaner, his sons Mason and Ryan, his parents Kris and Bob Muller, his brother Jon Muller (Moushumi Paul), his niece Madhabi, and the extended Hansen family. Survivors also include his mother-in-law Karan Swaner, brother-in-law Chris Nichols (Victoria), and sisterin-law Zoe Swaner, and the extended Swaner family.

Neil’s family would like to thank family members and dear friends and colleagues near and far for their love and support during this shattering time. A gathering is planned after the pandemic to celebrate Neil’s life.

Teresa (Terry) Lee Walker

7/10/1943 - 12/20/2020

Teresa (Terry) Lee Walker died peacefully December 20, 2020 from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 77 in the care of Vista Del Monte. She was born July 10, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Edward and Dorothy Lee. Terry was raised within an observant Catholic family along with an older brother, Edward Lee and a younger sister, Christy Lee Wyatt. One of her fondest memories was going to daily Mass with her father from a very young age and she remained a deeply religious person throughout her life.

Upon graduating from High School Terry entered the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart religious order in Santa Barbara, California. She remained there for seven years, graduating from Immaculate Heart College in 1968. While she left the community primarily because of a longing to marry and have children, she was also in the wave of the exodus of the order from the Catholic Church. The Vatican II reforms had encouraged the sisters to enter the world in greater service, which they heartily did. When these new guidelines were then rescinded, they decided not to go backward and ultimately became a lay community. Terry was profoundly influenced by the integrity, embodied spirituality and devotion to service of this community of women. Those qualities remained a core part of her character for the rest of her life.

Shortly after leaving the order Terry met and married David Walker. They moved to Santa Barbara when Terry was pregnant with her first child, Michele, followed by her second child, Josh. She is survived by her older brother, Edward and younger sister, Christy, her daughter, Michele, son-in-law Chris, and grandsons, Jesse and Sam. She is also survived by her son Josh,

daughter-in-law Gretchen and grandchildren Charlie and Maggie. Whatever Terry took on she did 110%; being the best parent and grandparent she knew how to be was a big part of her life and sense of purpose.

Terry had a rich and fulfilling career as both a teacher and a consultant. She loved consulting, especially to the local non-profit community such as La Casa de Maria, the Rape Crises Center, The Adoption Center, to name a few. Teaching was her first passion and a true calling. In her 34-year teaching career she taught elementary, junior high and college level. She taught locally at Marymount School, Vieja Valley Elementary and her last ten years at Main and Aliso Schools in Carpinteria. She took very seriously the idea that it was her job to love, nurture and support the children in her charge to be all they could be. She was cherished by her students as “tough but fair” and remained a child advocate for life.

When Terry retired in 2014, she took up volunteering in the community. She volunteered in the classroom three days a week and mentored young teachers.

She ushered at the Granada Theater, and welcomed people off the ships in Santa Barbara Harbor. She was very involved at her church, Trinity Episcopal, serving on the vestry, stewardship committee, prayer ministry, and all-round welcoming.

Terry was a force of nature, deeply passionate about life, learning, family, and friendship.

She was gregarious, welcoming, profoundly generous and giving of herself, her time, her expertise, and her resources. She was a life-long athlete and proudly swam 6 days a week, no matter where she was, ocean, pools, lakes, and upon retirement, at the YMCA. She was always in motion and walked everywhere.

Those in her orbit felt lucky to know her and be part of her life.

She fulfilled a genuine Ministry of Presence.

She showed up . . . always. She was a good and faithful servant and leaves a big space in our hearts. She will be sorely missed.

Dr. Joanne Savio Garofalo, MD

Dr. Joanne Savio Garofalo MD, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Santa Barbara Family Physician went home to be with our Lord and Heavenly Father the morning of January 4, 2021 in Santa Barbara. She was 86. She was gracious, kind, intelligent, spiritual, and so giving. She lived an amazing life and leaves behind a huge legacy.

Born on July 20, 1934 in Chester, Pennsylvania, she was the third of four children to be born to Anthony and Mary Natale. Joanne’s father had been born in Avellino, Italy and emigrated to the United States at the age of nine. Her mother, Mary, was born in Pennsylvania, the child of Italian Immigrants. Her father served in the United States Army in World War I. Her childhood was spent at the family home in Springfield, Pennsylvania. She often spoke of great traditions her parents taught her about life and her Italian Heritage.

From an early age, Joanne was a lover of Science. She never imagined being anything other than a Doctor when she grew up. Joanne was a top scholar throughout her education, and excelled academically wherever she attended. Graduating with Honors from Chester High School, she went on to study Chemistry at Immaculata University in East Whiteland Township, Pennsylvania, where she graduated with the high18

est honors. She received her Doctorate Medical Degree (M.D.) from the University of Irvine School of Medicine in 1960 and from then on devoted her professional life to Family Medicine and helping others. In the 1960’s she ran a prominent Family Medicine Clinic in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.

In 1972, Joanne married Dr. Joseph Garofalo, a Santa Barbara Podiatrist and together they built a beautiful partnership for 49 years. She was extremely dedicated to serving her patients, as many had been in her care for 40+ years.

Joanne was an accomplished Physician but considered her greatest joy to be a mother to her 8 children. Throughout the years, she instilled her values in them: faith, family, and humility. She was a devout Catholic and had a special devotion to Mary, the mother of Christ. She would recite the rosary daily and relied on her faith to get her through the trials and tribulations of life. Sunday dinners were a “must” in the Garofalo house, as Joanne enticed the whole family with her worldclass cooking of appetizing dishes, especially pasta marinara, eggplant parmigiana, and homemade lasagna, everyone’s favorite Christmas meal.

Joanne enjoyed Traveling to many destinations around the world. She particularly enjoyed family trips to Italy, time spent at a family home in Lake Tahoe , and frequently cruising different European ports of call. Her favorite was to cruise the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

For the past few years, Joanne had numerous struggles with her health but “pulled through” with her strength, determination, and excellent Medical Care received. The family would like to Thank Dr. Daniel Greenwald and Dr Richard Belkin for their exemplary care.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Garofalo, her children Michael Bucci (Dana), Monica Casas (Tom), Maria McGuire (Tom), Anita Kuskey (Eric), Vincent Bucci (Sasi), Alicia Garofalo Foschi (Ubaldo), Joseph Garofalo (Alexis), Salvatore Garofalo (Amy), 25 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Saturday, January 16 with burial to follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Santa Barbara. Due to Covid 19 Restrictions, these two ceremonies are for Immediate Family Only. A more public celebration of her life will take place at a date to be determined.

me a small handful of personal effects, she said kindly, “Your father was happy here.” It was true: He’d adjusted to life at a nearby assisted living facility, where he lived for two years. He had a pleasant demeanor, a ready smile, and joked with the staff. I was told often, and by many, that he was one of their favorite residents. We’d just visited him in his usual good spirits.

On Winter Solstice, as the sun cast long shadows and planets aligned into a spectacular Great Conjunction, we received the call: My father had COVID-19.

Alfred Daniel Eliason, last of his generation, youngest of three brothers, was born and raised in Bedford, New York, to an immigrant family from Sweden. He graduated from MIT, where he rowed crew and sang in the choir. He served his country in the Air Force Reserves and spent his career working in defense of his nation.

He met Bette Jean Jarrell, a model, in Dallas, Texas, when a friend invited him to visit. The story goes that she met two young men at a supper club, and one called to ask her on a date. She accepted, not certain which one would show up. Apparently, the right one did. by Pat Moore, the fiercest supporter of the Westmont Warriors. She usually stationed herself behind the home team’s bench, but she also was known to join the rowdy crowd in the student section.

“It was crazy to see this 75-year-old screaming and yelling with the students,” said Dave Loveton, who was covering Westmont sports for the News-Press and wrote a Page 1 article in 2003 that dubbed her “Passionate Pat.” Those public displays only hinted at the passion for life that burned deeply in Pat Moore. Ernest “Ernie” J. Sanchez, 84, of Carpinteria, passed away on January 3, 2021 in Santa Barbara.

Born February, 1936 at St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara to Albert and Jennie Sanchez of Carpinteria, Ernie was raised in Carpinteria along with his sisters Gloria (Fisher) and Dolly (Montalvo) where he attended elementary school through high school.

He played football for Carpinteria High School and earned the nickname “Moose” for his large physique and hardhitting talent on the field. This led him on to play ball at San Bernardino City College and garnered an offer to try out for the then Baltimore Colts. Ernie declined the offer and decided instead to enlist in the US Marine Corp in 1956, in which he proudly served until 1958 and then in the reserves until 1962 when he was honorably discharged.

In 1961 Ernie met and married Sally Mendoza, the love of his life. After living in Santa Barbara, they eventually settled in Carpinteria with their three children John, Paul, and Suzanne. With his strong work ethic, Ernie excelled and worked his way to G-12 status at Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station as an equipment management specialist. Ernie was a Marine through and through, but also a proud civil servant to the naval base for 28 years. His dedication to his work and country was immeasurable as was his love of his family. Family gatherings, watching and coaching his children’s sports, family travel and camping trips were among his favorite things. Ernie was a second father to many children. He greatly enjoyed working with youth and coached for the Carpinteria Boys Club as well as helped to establish the CYAA in Carpinteria. Eventually, he and Sally could be found front and center at their grandchildren’s events, even if there were two or three in one day. Ernie and Sally were both also very involved parishioners of St. Josephs Catholic Church. For many years they could be seen working in the taco or prize booth at the Annual St. Josephs

Their adventures took them to destinations near and far.

When they weren’t traveling, Ernie would help out in the offices of his son’s businesses, as well as spending time and helping with his great grandchildren (and grand dogs).

He always found time to keep in shape and could be seen walking or biking around Carpinteria with that familiar big smile. You would often see him visiting with friends or family he came across during his walks and rides, many times to talk cars and racing. His love of racing would occasionally take he and Sally to the Bonneville Salt Flats to enjoy a couple of days of racing. Ernie also took great pride in being a flag bearer for the Marine Corps Auxiliary at the Carpinteria Cemetery Memorial Day Services for many years and always stayed to speak with young and old veterans, their families and the scouts that were in attendance. He made it a point to seek out any young military personnel in attendance to thank them for their service.

With all his energy and love of life, Ernie will be remembered as a man who loved his family, his country and was a true gentleman.

Ernie is proceeded by and now reunited with his parents Albert and Jennie Sanchez and great granddaughter Harley Jade Millhollin. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Sally Sanchez and their children John {Polly), Paul (Michelle), Suzie (Keith) Millhollin; grandchildren Andrew (Lizette), Ivan, Kyle, Anthony (Brett}, Daniel “Mo”, Monique, Alix (Ryan), Briana and David; great grandchildren Zoey, Sienna, Luciana and Nico; siblings Gloria (John), Dolly (Willie) and his large extended family including many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Villa Alamar along with Central Coast Hospice and Doctor Bourne for the excellent and loving care they gave to Ernie and the family. We would also like to thank Dr. Robert Byers for his many years of excellent care. Many thanks to the Friendship Center of Montecito and to Easylift for their kindness and help over the years. Due to Covid, a private service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friendship Center, Easylift or the Alzheimers Association. In the words of Sally, “We lived a story book life together … it was wonderful”.

living Even Now, the Miracles Glimmer

T

he last time I was in downtown Santa Barbara, it snowed blossoms. I could not have imagined that a pandemic was about to change the world, and that soon my casual wanders into town from the northern part of the county would be poignant memories. But on this particular day, as I strolled along State Street, a warm gust of wind shook white petals from the trees and tossed them into the air, a blizzard of blossoms that circled everyone in silence and slow motion. I stopped in my tracks, enchanted. In bare branches nearby, a chorus of black crows watched. I don’t know why, but people kept hurrying along as if nothing amazing were happening, and I wanted to shout, “Look!”

That’s the way it is sometimes. It might be the quality of light, a fragment of fragrance or bird song, or a snowstorm of feathery blossoms — wonder and bliss wash over me, and my heart swells with gratitude. I call these I-love-my-life moments. They don’t last, of course, but while they do, they are a kind of enlightenment, and they are real. Even now, in this time of loss and suffering, the miracles glimmer.

Back home in Gaviota, we tend to be isolated anyway, but nowadays we’re living by even more restrictive protocols, and I am suspended in time here, trying to make sense of things. (I realize that this is a First World problem — how many of us have the luxury of pondering?) But even as my wants and furies smolder, I know I am learning patience and restraint, and I truly believe that our journeys will be clarified and our strengths and virtues magnified in the days ahead. There are new forms of hope in the ruins. Have we ever been so aware of injustice and our duty to make amends? Have we ever been so open about expressing our love for one another?

In the summer, a few masked friends and I held outdoor “summer school” gatherings for some of the local ranch children twice a week. One day, we distributed blank journals, and I talked about how I started writing my thoughts and memories in one as a child long ago. There was great exuberance about decorating them, with paint and collage papers and all sorts of ingenious adornments, and not many

words written within. But with Jim strumming guitar music, Jo bringing forth treasures, and everything dappled in sunlight, a feeling arose that was both festive and intimate.

Then a 5-year-old girl paused from gluing seashells and layering thick blotches of acrylic paint onto her journal book, looked up at me, her eyes wide and honest and surprisingly sad, and said what we’ve all been feeling: “I wish this sickness wasn’t happening.”

It brought home to me a sudden awareness of how much this pandemic is affecting the children, even those most sheltered and indulged. It touched my heart, and I felt a surge of maternal protectiveness, and I tried to be reassuring. I admitted that we all feel that way, and it’s hard, but that people have gone through periods like this before, and things eventually got better, and we’re helping by being extra careful and considerate, and look, even right now, nestled inside of this difficult time, there are happy things happening, like this.

I told her, too, that I respected the way she expressed her feelings, and I tried to slip in a pitch for the journal as a place in which to record such thoughts. She’s only 5, but she turned and immersed herself in her journal in her own way, decorating not only the cover, but the inside of it, and doing so with free-wheeling creativity and sustained concentration. As I walked home, I noticed my hands sparkling with glitter. I wondered what our little time travelers will remember of these days.

I meant what I said to that precious child: There are happy things happening too in this weird pandemic time. Just yesterday, I was standing out on the deck, and the pungent scent of a geranium wafted toward me, and I felt the warmth of the stucco and the dry grassy hills, and a door creaked, and my mother-in-law stepped outside into the garden, and everything was bright and stark, and totally sufficient, and I was spellbound, suspended in vivid nowness. And sometimes it snows blossoms.

Oh, I wish this sickness wasn’t happening. But let’s help each other through. n

The rice-flour doughnuts are lighter and gummier than standard American wheat- or potato-flour versions, defined as much by their texture as their flavor. (Mōr currently has no gluten-free options.) I’ve tried the versions made by the Japanese-owned Mochinut in Irvine and the Taiwanese/Indonesian-owned Third Culture in Oakland, both at the fore of bringing these yummies to California. Even though he’s brand new to the game, Chang’s creations more than hold their own against these mochi doughnut heavyweights.

ine and war have never been far apart, from

the beverage’s emergence in the ever-fractious Caucasus Mountains and Middle East to the Greek and Roman eras of conquest to the 20th century, when iconic European appellations were nearly bombed to smithereens during the World Wars. I reported on the link firsthand in 2004 when covering the postwar limbo of Nagorno-Karabakh, where vintners in BY MATT KETTMANN one of the world’s oldest wine-growing regions were still clearing landmines from vineyards, making wine in bullet-hole-ridden barns, and coopering barrels in repurposed tank factories, a full decade after major fighting had ceased.

But not until the recently released documentary Wine & War have filmmakers aimed such a focused lens on this connection. Co-created by Santa Barbara resident Mark Ryan, the 95-minute film covers the history of winemaking in Lebanon, where determined vintners continued to ferment their juice over the centuries as wars raged.

The well-paced, engagingly educational, and often inspirational film showcases the handful of producers who persevered during the country’s brutal civil war of the 1980s, explores the turmoil of the 34-day battle with Israel in 2006, and briefly covers the winemakers who are plodding ahead with grape-growing in Syria amid that country’s ongoing civil war. But the broader tale is about the modern renaissance of Lebanese viticulture, in which more than 50 producers now exist in both the traditional Bekaa Valley and a newer coastal region in the Batroun Mountains.

“There are producers who don’t want to talk about the civil war, and there are the ones who do—that was perhaps the biggest challenge,” said Ryan, who worked on the film with co-creator Mark Johnston for 12 years, basing much of it on the book Wines of Lebanon by Michael Karam. For those that do reminisce, like the late Serge Hochar of the legendary Chateau Musar, their eloquent messages of perseverance resonate loudly.

“That’s the core of the film: resilience under fire,” said Ryan. “But other producers would just prefer to let things go and get on with it. And that’s true across most of Lebanon. It’s a wound that hasn’t really been reckoned with.”

rising up quite quickly, and a Central Valley that’s hotter inland,” said Ryan.

Like California and much of the winemaking world, Lebanese producers are returning to their roots by reviving old-vine plantings of varieties well-suited for the climate, rather than just trying to make a big red wine. “Everybody seems like they went through the big, oaky cab phase, which thankfully is long gone,” said Ryan.

“More and more producers are starting to embrace carignane and cinsault.

Many are 80- to 100-year-old vines, and they’re all dry-farmed.”

What carries the film are characters such as Chateau Musar’s Hochar, whom they filmed before his 2014 death. “He exceeded all expectations,” said Ryan. “He’s the most charismatic, soulful winemaker I’ve ever met.”

Then there are folks such as Naji and Jill Boutrous of Chateau Belle-Vue. “That’s a very typical story of coming back and rebuilding,” said Ryan. “A lot of [the new producers] are from the diaspora that have come back to heal their own wounds.”

Filming in Lebanon was a “relatively safe” affair, though there were parts of the northern Bekaa Valley that were “pseudo dangerous” due to the hashish trade; one winemaker they feature is also growing cannabis. “It’s like Los Angeles,” said Ryan. “You don’t want to be in certain places, especially at night.”

The country’s political situation remains tumultuous. “Long story short: Every five minutes in Lebanon, it’s a new thing,” said Ryan, noting high inflation, a trash crisis, Hezbollah saber-rattling, and politiciansFOLLOW being US ON TWITTER charged with crimes. “COVID@sbindynews is the last of their concerns, oddly enough.”

They rushed Wine & War to release after the massive chemical explosion that rocked Beirut on August 4, releasing the film via Altavod.com on FOLLOW US ON October 9. They’re donating every $12 INSTAGRAM screening fee to the rebuilding of the @sbindependent children’s wing of Beirut’s Saint George Hospital, which was badly damaged during the explosion. Wine & War will also be hitting the film festival circuit this spring.

“We’re trying to spread the word about Lebanese wine,” said Ryan.

“We’re not on the payroll, but we love Lebanon, and we love the people.”

Born and raised in Los Angeles, where he graduated with a cinema and television production degree from USC, Ryan started his career in reality TV, producing MTV’s Pimp My Ride.

“That became an expected hit,” said Ryan. He went freelance more than a dozen years ago and now does a bit of everything.

“I film, I direct, I produce, I edit,” he explained. “Just like most people in my generation, I’m either like a one-man band or part of an entire crew, depending on the client and the scope of the project.”

His mom has lived in Montecito for almost 25 years. “I’ve been coming here since before the Funk Zone was a figment of people’s imaginations,” said Ryan. “Hiking was always my escape.”

As he found more work covering the wine industry — producing all of the video content for Grape Radio for more than six years, among other gigs—the Santa Barbara pull kept growing stronger, and he moved here about two years ago.

His first trip to Lebanon was for a friend’s wedding, and he was immediately struck. “The hospitality, from the minute you get off the plane, is just A-plus,” said Ryan, who visited multiple times while making Wine & War, including nine months straight in 2017.

“They’re the most lovely people.”

That goes for the wines as well. “I’ve never had a bad Lebanese wine,” said Ryan. “They all seem to be very high quality across the board.”

Part of that is due to a familiar geography. “Lebanon is like California in miniature, where you have a Mediterranean climate, a coast with mountains

The Double Jalama Burger

Highway 1 to the wave-wracked elbow of California’s coast, where reliable breezes blow salty sea spray into your hair, biting into a legendary Jalama Burger is a rite of passage for Santa Barbara County residents. A few weeks ago, my son chose that baptism-by-burger as the centerpiece of his 11th birthday adventure. Like most pilgrims to the Jalama Beach Grill, he went the traditional route: single patty, cheese, that snappy shrettuce, tomato, pickles, secret sauce, not much fuss.

But not having had one myself in about a decade, I decided to go bigger. Seeing the list of enhancements below the regular burger, I simply added them all: grilled onions, bacon, jalapeños, extra cheese, and, yes, even a second beef patty.

The latter, it turned out, was entirely unnecessary — the Jalama Burger already comes Mason Kettmann’s rite of passage with an ample ⅓-pound patty, and stacking on a second one is just plain overkill.

After we all ogled and laughed at my ambitious folly—I truly wondered how I was going to wrap my teeth around its gargantuan girth—I managed to chomp down the whole beast, its messy parts disintegrating atop the picnic table as I waged my battle. (I’m not sure the buns are quite built for a double.)

Though physically hard to eat, and psychologically daunting, it was still an utterly delicious experience, and perhaps even strategic: I didn’t have to eat much more than ice-cream cake until bedtime, while salad and tofu proved plentiful in my diet on the days to follow. (I’m a little embarrassed to say that I ate ample amounts of fries and onion rings as well.)

I hesitate to endorse this experience for others, as the challenge starts to overcome the enjoyment about two-thirds of the way through the burger. But the familiar flavors satisfied as usual, lasting memories were made, and perhaps even new rites were recorded. I don’t plan on doing it again, unless, of course, it’s another decade before I return.

A NATIONAL BOTTOM

F

ew authors of any era have earned the kind of unstinting devotion that attends every new work by Anne Lamott. Her wry humor and instinct for telling home truths about this difficult thing called life offer a buoyant alternative to cynicism and despair without ever lapsing into platitudes or sentimentality. In her latest volume, 2018’s Almost Everything: Notes on Hope, Lamott argues passionately that each of us deserves to be seen as a spiritual being in human form despite our everpresent doubts and shortcomings. On Thursday, January 14, at 5 p.m., Lamott will participate by Zoom in UCSB Arts & Lectures’ House Calls series. It was my great pleasure to speak briefly by phone with Lamott last week. What follows is a portion of that conversation, condensed and lightly edited for publication.

LOOKING UP AND AHEAD WITH ANNE LAMOTT

We’ve all had to get by on a lot less direct contact with other people this year. How’s that been for you? Do you still teach Sunday school? I haven’t taught Sunday school by Zoom, but I go to church by Zoom and I wave frantically and call out every child that gets dragged along.

Everyone is still processing the events of the last two weeks, and in particular what happened at the Capitol on Wednesday, January 6. What are your thoughts? Has the recent unrest yielded any kind of revelation for you? What I feel is, and I know we can’t say “shit” in your newspaper or whatever, but holy shit. Holy shit! I mean, my mind is literally blown. And I very rarely use that phrase from the ’60s. My mind is literally blown, and as a recovering addict and alcoholic, I know that every single person I’m close to who ever got clean and sober

holics say to newcomers: “Look at what your best thinking did—it got you to jail.”

I know it makes me a bad person and a terrible Christian, but I can’t help but love that so many of these people [who stormed the Capitol building] tweeted their own violence and theft and are now going to be charged by the feds, who are not as friendly as county cops. You know the feds are a little bit tense about stuff like this, about sedition and violence and burglary and cop-killing. So I think that this really is like a national bottom. This is where it brought us. This is where our best —or their best—thinking brought us.

And I think as a nation —or half of a nation, right?—it gives these people the opportunity, she said generously, to look at how their beliefs have lined up with the lie machine that began four years ago when Sean Spicer misstated the number of people at Trump’s inauguration. It began on day one, and now people are hitting a bottom—this is where their best thinking got them. And here’s what recovering alco-

While the availability of high-quality recorded offerings has helped content-starved fans weather this period of deprivation, 10 months is a long time to go without new material. That’s just one of the reasons that the arrival of Modulation, a digital media collaboration between the Los Angeles Opera and the Prototype Festival, has been so welcome in the first weeks of this new year. Available to stream January 8-16, Modulation presents highly original new work by 13 composers in a format described as a “user-led digital experience.” By means of an interface navigation scheme familiar from video games, the audience chooses from a baker’s dozen of options grouped into three categories — Identity, Fear, and Isolation. Clicking on door-like or sculptural objects embedded in three separate screenscapes initiates the playing of individual music videos, each approximately five minutes in length.

It’s a bit like opening an operatic advent calendar, only the sequence is up to the viewer.

So, now what? Well, the miracle for both an alcoholic on his or her third day of recovery, or in this case a nation, is to say, “I don’t know. I have run out of any more good ideas.” And that’s where the resurrection or the restoration begins. And so for people who have passionately supported this guy, because they’re quote, unquote “pro-life,” or whatever, it’s time to say, “I don’t have a clue what we do next, or what is right. I don’t know what Nancy Pelosi does; I don’t know what we do. I don’t know.”

And so you stop adding to the madness. You just stop. And you breathe, and you wait.

And you always, always, always take care of the poor. And then, you know, as we say in the recovery community, “more will be revealed.” So that’s what I know—that this is a great dawning and an excruciating bottom that this nation has hit, and as a result of it, I believe that the barge will slowly begin to turn around.

The range of styles represented far surpasses any expectations one might derive from the idea of opera. While some works, such as the exquisite song “Where Once We Sang” by Peruvian composer Jimmy López Bellido, hew closely to traditional concepts of classical music, others, such as the contribution of Ghanaian composer/ performer Jojo Abot, come out of hybrid pop formations such as Afrobeat. Juhi Bansal, an Indian composer raised in Hong Kong, was inspired by the story of the Bangladesh Surf Girls club to create “Waves of Change,” a gorgeous and moving video that will surely hit home for many residents of the South Coast.

Other composers featured include the antic Paul Pinto, Angélica Negrón, and Joel Thompson, who wrote perhaps the most tragically relevant choral work in recent American history, “The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed.” Music Academy of the West audiences can expect to share in the richness of this new stream of creativity as producer extraordinaire Beth Morrison joins forces with that organization in the upcoming season.
