I’m using a slightly adjusted pattern from one of my favorite YouTube follows, Mimi G Style. It is very simple and easy to make, just a few lines of stitching and 22(ish) inches of elastic! I don’t have a printer, so I suggest pulling up the pattern PDF at 100%, taping a piece of white paper to your screen, and tracing it with a pencil. For men’s masks, make the rounded side just slightly larger.

What kind of fabric do you use? I have a pretty big stash of fabric, so I’m just using bits and bobs, but you should definitely choose a fabric with a tight weave. Quilter’s cotton is ideal. Do not use a linen.

Over the last week, we have been humbled by the many readers who have responded to our letter asking for you to support the Independent. Thank you.

In our last three issues, our pages have been filled with articles about the coronavirus and how it is affecting all our lives. The idea for many of these stories first came from readers. We have received hundreds of tips.

Some sounded the alarm about the dangerous health conditions in Lompoc federal penitentiary. Some warned about the rise of domestic abuse they were seeing in their neighborhoods. Others wanted us to know about their boss who was taking food to hospital workers, and others alerted us about the urgent need to find foster care for animals in the county shelters.

Our reporters took all these tips most seriously. How many are you making, and for whom? Quarter-inch elastic is in very high demand right now. It’s sold out almost everywhere. I only bought enough to make masks for my closest humans, because I didn’t want to be a hoarder. After this elastic is gone, I’ll make more with simple cotton straps. Remember that cloth masks are best for us normal people, because we should be saving N95s for our medical professionals who need them the most! My mom is a nurse at a hospital in Maryland that has access to ZERO N95 masks.

Staying at Home Is Working

by Nick Welsh t a time when good news has become a rare commodity, the County Board of Supervisors got a painful dose of it on Tuesday morning. It was the most informative presentation to date of where the county stands in its fight against COVID-19.

Physical isolation really does make a big difference, said county health officials. Should Santa Barbarans continue to shelter in place at their current rate — estimated to be about 50 percent — it appears there are enough intensive care unit (ICU) beds throughout the county to handle the anticipated surge of cases. As of the Independent’s deadline, there have been 218 confirmed infections. For those experiencing acute respiratory distress at the time of the surge, however, there will not be enough ventilators.

If county residents would pick up the pace of physical isolation by just 5 percent, County Public Health Director Van Do-Reynoso stated, the county’s 50 available ventilators would be sufficient to handle the patient load. But if residents backslide in their sequestering efforts by as much as 10 percent, county hospitals could collectively find themselves about 500 beds short for the number of critically ill patients seeking help.

These temporary rooms would also allow for quarantining those without housing who may already be infected but are not requiring hospitalization. The county has thus far secured only 15 motel rooms, though some nonprofits have independently secured an additional eight motel rooms, paying the room rates out of their own limited operating funds or with help from private philanthropists.

Ventura County, by contrast, has secured 270 units in four motels targeting the same population. Ventura is using state emergency funding to pay for motel security and oversight, while providing mental health and public health services.

Supervisors were told that no operator been found to take on the challenge of running a shelter for southern Santa Barbara County, but in Santa Maria, Good Samaritan had taken over managing the shelter setup, but closed, three weeks ago in the high school. That shelter, which houses a maximum of 71, had proved to be more than a handful for the county employees — few of whom had any direct experience working in homeless shelters. Good Samaritan,

sickness progressed, Goodsell was reportedly overwhelmed by uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea, prompting a friend to call an ambulance, which delivered him to Cottage. By that time, however, he’d come into contact with countless people, some of whom laundered his blankets, cleaned his clothes, and looked after his dog.

Masking the Problem Not mentioned at all during the supervisors’ deliberations was the fact that 70 percent of the million N95 masks delivered to the county’s Public Health Department 10 days ago were defective. The straps attaching the mask were old and had lost adhesive function. Efforts are now underway to determine whether they can be fixed. State emergency officials — who provided the masks in the first place — have reportedly stated they’d send another 100,000 masks.

Staying the Course Based on cell-phone tracking data maintained by Google, somewhere between 40 and 60 percent of Santa Barbara County residents have complied with physical-distancing requirements. According to one modeling projection, DoReynoso said, county hospitals will become most slammed in the third week of August, when 274 hospital beds, 176 ICU beds, and 130 ventilators will be needed. No Rest for the Weary

by Tyler Hayden r. David Zisman is a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist. He’s seen a lot over his career, which took him from Venezuela to Texas to Santa Barbara. But he’s never seen anything like this.

“This is a new disease for us,” he said, “a new infection. We have no previous experience, and there is very little scientific information to go by.”

Zisman is one of eight Sansum Clinic pulmonary doctors tending to the county’s sickest COVID-19 patients. It’s been a long few weeks with more tough days ahead. As of this writing, 42 people are in the hospital, 19 in the intensivecare unit (ICU). Two have died. Thirty-seven health-care workers are infected. But Zisman and his colleagues aren’t about to give up. Not by a long shot. And while they’re not looking for recognition, they certainly deserve it.

Zisman took time between shifts this week to speak with the Independent. Our exchange has been edited for length and clarity.

out there that is sometimes biased or coming from unreliable sources. But certain aspects of this virus we do recognize and have seen before. We are still trying to define best practices and determine the underlying injury and response patterns that these patients are displaying. There are still a lot of unknowns.

What actually happens to a person’s body and lungs when they are infected with COVID-19? We are starting to see data

from China and other places that is helping us understand it a little better.

In debilitated patients, the virus injures the linings of airways and the lungs’ air sacs. This produces a brisk immune response. In some cases, this natural immune response can cause injury to the patient. ‘Waterfall of Applications’ for Payroll Loans

T

he federal rollout of the $350 billion federal Payroll Protection Plan (PPP) has been a rollercoaster ride for bankers and employers alike. In Santa Barbara, demand for PPP loans by local employers trying to make payroll is “insane,” according to one individual who answered the phone at Union Bank’s downtown Santa Barbara offices.

At Montecito Bank & Trust, more than a thousand applications popped through the portal in the first four hours, said Megan Orloff.

The “waterfall of applications” was reviewed over the weekend, Orloff said, with the bank returning 250 voicemails and emails to boot. To keep its customers apprised of the latest, the bank has set up a COVID19 resources page (montecito.bank/covid-19-resources).

The program intends to give employers loans that enable them to maintain payroll and costs, like medical insurance and family leave, in order to keep employees on the books — and off unemployment insurance. When the coronavirus loosens its grip on American life, the idea is that employees come right back into their jobs. Some costs like rent or mortgage interest and utilities might be covered, as well. And the major boon is that the loan would be forgiven if the employer keeps all its employees.

Michelle Martinich at American Riviera Bank observed there was a huge need for the program in the community but a lot of confusion because it rolled out so quickly. Even now, changes come daily.

At first, it was unclear what level of due diligence the payroll documen-

tation had to have, said accountant and former Goleta city councilmember Tony Vallejo, who is helping his clients with their payroll paperwork for the loans. Without such guidance, banks and borrowers could later learn the Small Business Administration would not forgive the loan. For Santa Barbara’s relatively small banks, a one percent loan is untenable; for those borrowing out of need, it would be even worse.

Trying to bridge the information gap and provide businesses some guidance are a rolling series of video conferences and webinars by SCORE Santa Barbara, a free business-mentoring nonprofit.

Banks also have to ensure the borrower clearly understand the terms of the loan, said Martinich, and the rules they must comply with in order to have the loan forgiven. For instance, her bank was still awaiting word on whether an employer contribution to a 401k qualified as a payroll expense. In the meantime, the Small Business Administration website is clogged with applications.

During the week before the program rolled out, the terms of the loans changed repeatedly, said Vallejo. “Depending on how you look at it, it’s —Jean Yamamura either been challenging or a nightmare.”

California and the White House now advise covering your nose and mouth with a cloth face mask during necessary trips, such as to the grocery store, to reduce the spread of COVID-19. People without symptoms can spread the virus through simply talking — as well as coughs and sneezes — the Centers for Disease Control stated. The recommendation is not for medicalgrade masks, still in dire need by health-care workers, but for a simple cloth covering. The Hutton Parker Foundation announced it will be forgiving rent for the month of April for tenants at 1330 State Street, which houses a number of arts-and-culture-focused nonprofits.

In a letter to tenants, the foundation stated those who have already paid their rent for the month will receive a credit that can be put toward future rental payments. “We’re supporting local nonprofits so that they can go out and continue helping those in the community who need it the most,” said Tom Parker, the foundation’s president.

Through a partnership between United Way of Santa Barbara County, Jane and Paul Orfalea with the Audacious Foundation, and the Natalie Orfalea Foundation with Lou Buglioli, the Emergency Child Care Fund has raised $500,000 to provide childcare to the children of health-care workers and first responders. by Delaney Smith n Tuesday, the school board had its first online-only meeting during which administrators reported on how the remote-learning programs were working for the 15,000 students sent home when all schools closed three weeks ago. “We have spent the past three weeks reorganizing ourselves for remote learning,” said Raul Ramirez, assistant superintendent of elementary education. The report shone light on both unexpected victories and challenges.

Elementary students, particularly those in preschool through 2nd grade, are one of the more difficult groups to teach remotely because they have less experience using technology for learning and, unlike older students, have not all received iPads through the district’s techEQUITY program.

Ramirez said that, though these younger students have been given print material, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Shawn Carey, assistant superintendent of secondary education, emphasized that young students just learning to read can be hurt by not having face-to-face instruction from their teachers.

For middle and high schools students, one of the biggest challenges for administrators was deciding how to grade their work.

This is particularly important for high school juniors and seniors applying to college.

“The post-secondary institutions who have been acting as a consortium are providing guidance as well [as the state],” Carey said. “We know that the University of California and the state university schools are accepting of pass/fail or credit/no credit grades.”

How that will affect K-12 schools is still unclear, especially for the upper-level students, but Carey believes that credit/no credit will be part of the grading system in the future.

The district is keeping attendance records for every student during Zoom sessions, a popular remote video conferencing platform. If students don’t attend Zoom sessions, the teacher contacts the parents to work out a solution and ensure the student can be online. However some students do not have access to the internet.

The district is working to make sure that is solved, as well.

“We have already put 300 families in touch with Cox,” said Todd Ryckmann, the chief educational technology officer. Cottage Reports ‘Emergency-Level’ Shortages

I

n a letter sent last Thursday evening to Cottage Health staff, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Edmund M. Wroblewski described “emergency-level” shortages of certain protective equipment for doctors and nurses treating COVID-19 patients.

Wroblewski also stated that the 194,000 N95 masks Cottage recently received from the state cache are “unusable in their current condition.” “Unfortunately, while in the state inventory, the elastic strap degraded over time and no longer functions,” he wrote.

Cottage is now talking to local manufacturers about potential repairs.

Wroblewski’s letter was provided to the Independent by a member of Santa Barbara’s medical community, who wished to remain anonymous.

Cottage’s current supply of 108 PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator) shields— full-face, battery-powered respirators worn by medical staff to protect them from contaminated air — constitutes “an emergencylevel shortage,” Wroblewski said. Orders for

6,400 more shields were placed in February and March, but the timing of their arrival is uncertain. “Testing is ongoing with UCSB and local tech companies for local production potential,” he said.

Based on their current inventory and usage rate, Wroblewski went on, Cottage Health has calculated the length of time other types of equipment are expected to last: isolation gowns (20,595) for 15 days, surgical masks (108,000) for 37 days, goggles (14,500) for 182 days, and face shields (7,000) for 188 days. With only a handful of disinfectant wipes remaining, staff have now been asked to use paper towels and spray bottles filled with a disinfectant formula to clean hard surfaces.

“Supply orders continue to arrive, and donated supplies are being collected at the [Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital] donation center,” Wroblewski said. “The Incident Command Center is working to identify every viable avenue to secure, reprocess, and produce supplies.”

wenty-three inmates and five staff members at the mediumsecurity federal prison in Lompoc—officially known as United States Penitentiary, Lompoc, or USP Lompoc — have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) on Tuesday.

The BOP operates 22 penitentiaries throughout the United States.

COVID-19’s Unsung Heroes

hile doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals at large are rightfully being lauded as heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s another set of less likely saviors facing the coronavirus frontlines every day: grocery store workers.

“It used to be an invisible job, just trying to stock the hummus and not get run over by carts,” said Demi Dusenberry, who’s worked at the Trader Joe’s in Goleta for nearly nine years. “Now I’m not invisible. It feels really weird to get thanks for just showing up to work. It’s still the same job. But I’m so glad that I do have a place to work.”

Grocery Store Workers Bring Calm to Anxious Shoppers Danna Knutzen is the scan coordinator at Gelson’s, where she’s worked for 31 years (back to when it was an Albertsons). She said most people are thankful, but that it’s difficult to be unable to please every customer.

“We are so used to having everything they want,” she said. “Needing to say, ‘No, I’m sorry, we’re out,’ continuously for the past couple weeks has been hard.”

Knutzen believes that Gelson’s “turned a corner last week,” and that there is more equilibrium between what/how much people need and the supplies on shelves. But the earlier weeks of the shelter-in-place rules were much more hectic.

“In the beginning, it was chaotic and overwhelming,” said Gelson’s manager Steve Thomas, who’s worked for the Los Angeles– based chain for 31 years, the last five in Santa Barbara. “We did not have a good handle on what customers were doing. It caught us off-guard.”

In addition to the hoarding of toilet paper and cleaning supplies, there was a run on canned and dried beans and rice. Three weeks in, it’s still hard to keep flour and yeast on the shelves.

Gelson’s was one of the earlier places to

impose social distancing rules both inside and outside of the store. They’re also limiting customers to about 30 at a time, sanitizing carts, disinfecting the checkout zones, running half-hour reminders over the speakers, and spacing out the checkout process.

Employees are allowed and encouraged to wear protective gear, but it was not mandatory as of press time.

On March 18, Gelson’s launched a 7-8 a.m. senior citizen shopping hour, but that was a bit crazy. “It was a madhouse,” said Thomas. “The next morning, we were ready for them, and it went much smoother.”

Further tweaks to operating procedures come frequently. “Every day is an adventure,” said Thomas. “We’re getting new directives, and we deal with them.”

One of the more recognizable crew members at the Trader Joe’s on De la Vina Street is Eric Friedman, the towering Santa Barbara city councilmember. “It’s been very challenging, but I think the crew members have been able to keep their calm,” he said. “We’re just adapting and trying to make the best of what we’ve got.”

Friedman believes that the grocery shopping experience, including the familiar faces of longtime employees, provides a bit of normalcy in these weird times. He also feels that Santa Barbarans in particular are well equipped to deal with yet another crisis.

“We’ve been through so many emergency situations in the last decade or so,” he said.

“They’re not like this one, but I think that has prepared us very well to remain calm. Most people understand that grocery store workers are trying as hard as we can to provide essential services.”

There remains room for improvement for customers, though. While people seemed to have mostly stopped shopping with their kids at Gelson’s, Thomas is surprised to see many couples scour the shelves together.

That should stop.

“Our employees are in contact with hundreds of people every day,” said Thomas.

“The more people that stay home and just allow one person to shop for the household is better for them and better for us. We don’t have a choice. We’re right in front of everyn body.”

James C. McTavish 1/2/1929 – 3/27/2020

If you had the pleasure of knowing James McTavish you would know he was a man who loved the Hibs, his wife Joan, and being Scottish, likely in that order.

He grew up in Leith, Edinburgh, near Easter Road where the Hibs soccer team played, giving him the unfortunate luck of being born a Hibernian supporter. The last time they won the Scottish premier cup was in 1902.

It was James’ living dream that the Hibs might win again during his lifetime. He listened to every match, followed the scores, and learned to adapt to technology to tune in on Saturday mornings to watch the games. He got an iPod just to listen to the team’s song “Sunshine on Leith” by the Proclaimers. In 2016 they won the Scottish cup, and he recorded it only to watch it over and over again. It was at that point he declared he could die a happy man.

While working in England he met Joan at a dance. He always made sure to let you know it was “Ladies’ Choice”.

When Joan asked him for a dance she learned his first name was James. Since Joan did not know his last name her father referred to him as McTavish, the name usually given to anyone in a joke about a Scot. It wasn’t long before Joan found out that indeed his name was McTavish and the first of countless funny family stories began.

Soon Joan Giddens became Joan McTavish, and the rest is history. They were broke, they were in love, and then they set sail to Canada for a new adventure with their two boys, Robert and Ian, in tow.

They had two girls, Lindsay and Fiona, in Canada before making their way to Seattle where he worked for Boeing.

James was assigned to work as a design engineer on the Minute Man Missile project which required living in numerous states. The McTavish family moved to Philadelphia after Jim accepted a new job and eventually they moved to Santa Barbara, 14

California. After retirement Jim and Joan returned to live near York, England in a tiny and beautiful village named Sinnington. There they made wonderful new friends, entertained old friends from around the world and took part in all the local activities including quiz night at the local pub.

James passed on a few well known McTavish traits, the first being stubbornness, the second that cheeky ear-to-ear smile, the third, the proper way to hold a golf club, and the fourth, empathy.

Coming from humble beginnings, James made sure he treated a doorman the same way he treated a doctor.

He forever saw himself as an immigrant and could always see himself in those coming to America and working for a better life. He was an apprentice coppersmith who made his way to night school to become a mechanical engineer, starting two businesses including a bronze casting company. He was a craftsman through and through. He believed that any job worth doing was worth doing well.

When I remember James McTavish, I’ll remember practicing the multiplication tables with him in the living room at Golf Road. I’ll remember selling his golfballs back to him with my cousins, I’ll remember how he taught us all to swim. I’ll remember him telling stories of Scotland and his youth, I’ll remember him tying my shoelaces – equally. I’ll remember him telling me to make sure my grandma behaves every time she and I left the house. I’ll remember his mischievous wink. I’ll remember overhearing him say “Goodnight Joan” every night I stayed with them. I’ll remember his kindness, his smile, and most importantly the way he called 23andme to complain that the results were wrong when they came in 54.9% Irish, arguing that he was 100% Scottish.

He leaves behind four children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. All have been blessed with the McTavish smile, and will continue to be lucky as they have been born a McTavish.

In the hall of his home proudly hangs the McTavish clan crest. Inscribed are the words that now feel more relevant than ever – Ne Obliviscaris – Never Forgotten.

Frank Andrew Lucas 5/24/1936 – 3/31/2020

Frank Andrew Lucas, 83, died peacefully on March 31 at his daughter and son-inlaw’s home in Carlsbad, CA. He was the son of Florence and Kurt Lucas who were longtime SB residents. Living in Santa Barbara for most of his adult years, he had affection for and knowledge about the city, and was happy to spend his later years in Montecito with his partner, Vonne McKeehan.

Frank was born on May 24, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa, came to California in 1945, and in 1954 graduated from Hoover High School in San Diego. During his late teens, he helped his father build a family house near the state college and found that he enjoyed developing carpentry and architectural skills, so much so that he decided to major in architectural drawing when he attended Cal Poly in 1955. The lure of hands-on building caused him to leave Cal Poly and begin his career by buying land and building homes in Morro Bay in the early years of its growth.

In 1960, Frank was married to Marian Rose (Richmond, CA), and in the same year he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu while working as a decoder. The couple then returned to Santa Barbara and Frank earned his General Contractor’s license. He was proud to serve for some time as president of the Building Industry Association, and built many homes in Santa Barbara as well as several local commercial developments. After his divorce in 1990, he continued to enjoy golfing at the Municipal Course and spending time with his family and friends.

During his semi-retirement, Frank and Vonne moved for short periods to Carpinteria, Las Vegas, and

Brentwood in the Bay Area before returning to Santa Barbara to stay. They formed a happy family group with four Chihuahuas to care for, as well as to foster other dogs.

For some years, Frank met his friends most mornings for coffee at Stackey’s café in Summerland.

Frank’s death leaves behind three children with his former wife, Marian: Cory Davis and Mike Lucas of Fresno, and Cathy (Doug) Partie of Carlsbad, plus seven grandchildren. He also leaves sisters Nona (Bob) Jacobsen of Brentwood, and Deanna (George) Gregg of Santa Barbara and their families, and Vonne McKeehan, his partner of thirty years.

Peter S. Browne 10/27/1946 – 3/8/2020

Peter S. Browne, a long time Florida resident, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

Peter lived an amazing life. Born October 27, 1946 in Santa Barbara CA, where he grew up. He went to Santa Barbara High School, surfed Hammonds Beach and enjoyed classic cars.

He married his first wife right out of high school and had two children. In 1974, he married his second wife, Cheryl, who was with him to the end.

Peter and Cheri moved to El Jebel, Colorado in 1975 and lived there for a few years before making their way to Ft. Lauderdale Florida to fulfill a dream of sailing the world.

There they bought their first sailboat, the Cybele, a 30’ Tahiti Ketch. They moved the Cybele to Madeira Beach Florida and Peter spent the next several years rebuilding

her. Peter won 3rd place at the Tampa Florida Antique Boat Show in February 1985.

Later that year, the Cybele was sold, and they bought a newly built 40’ cutter in Boston, MA. They christened her the Georgiana K in honor of Peter’s mother.

After discovering the boat was not as sound as they thought, Peter spent another several years stripping down to the hull and rebuilding her.

Between the two boats, they got the opportunity to sail to Cuba, the Cayman Islands and other destinations.

In 1992, Peter and Cheri connected with Morgan Sanger, the founder of the Columbus Foundation.

Peter got his captains license and skippered the Nina for several years taking her up and down the east coast and even up the Mississippi into the Great Lakes.

After Peter retired from the Nina, Morgan reached out in 1996 asking him to take her from Brownsville TX through the Panama Canal to San Diego.

Peter, also, worked in his trade as a new construction plumber throughout the years. He worked on several of the large hospitals in the St Petersburg area as well as spending a year in the Bahamas working on the Atlantis Hotel.

In 2018, Peter was diagnosed with cancer and spent the last 18 months in treatment. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cheryl, his daughter Natalie, his son Daniel, two granddaughters and 4 great-grandchildren.

Peter was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Finding Comfort and Calm in

Remote Teaching

t’s Sunday today, right?” I ask my roomies with a smile, peeking up from under our dusty coffee table. We’re in the midst of another quarantine cleaning project, scrubbing away to pass the time.

“It’s Saturday!” they laugh excitedly. My heart sinks a little.

Although this isn’t my typical weekend mindset, teaching has often been a balm to soothe the wounds of life. Through breakups, anxieties, or natural disasters, its healing power never fails to get me out of my head and into the present moment.

Nowhere have I felt this more intensely than in the past few weeks of social distanc-

ing. Like other schools in the district, Marymount, where I teach English to 6th and 7th graders, has switched to remote learning since March 16. We will continue to do so as long as necessary to halt the spread of COVID-19.

Lost in an unending washing machine of media churning out facts about the coronavirus, I’ve felt suffocated, tossed, and turned through the news cycle, yet never able to come out clean. Teaching is a welcome breath of air. Yes, there are new challenges to confront: ensuring everyone has the time, support, and access to grasp the material, figuring out how to assess learning most effectively, and maintaining our connection as a classroom community.

Roger Ben Vaughan 8/18/1940 – 3/28/2020

Roger Ben Vaughan, age 79, of Vancouver, WA passed away on March 28, 2020 in his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and V. Katheleen (Camper) Vaughan and his sister Linda Marlett. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Sheila Vaughan; three sisters Loretta Cunmingham, Delores “Dee” Millard, and Lynnette Anderson; two children Karen Chidwick and Kevin Vaughan; and four grandchildren Thomas and Ben Chidwick and Austin and Sierra Vaughan-Harris.

Roger was born in Peoria, IL on August 18, 1940. He graduated from Peoria High School in 1959 then enlisted in the Air Force and served in Alaska working on radios, he advanced to an E-4. On June 27, 1965, he married Sheila (Shannon) at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bartonville, IL. In 1971 he moved his family to Santa Barbara, CA and lived next door to his sister, Dee for 40 years.

He was employed at Delco Electronics for 15 years and retired in 1992. After 45 years in Santa Barbara, he and Sheila moved to Vancouver, Washington to be closer to his family.

Roger was mechanicallyminded and enjoyed working with his hands and building things. He was usually working on a project in the garage every weekend and remodeled many parts of his home including his kitchen and both bathrooms and added many touches to his house to make it a home. He also created beautiful outdoor landscaping to complement his home’s exterior.

He was very active in his church in Santa Barbara operating the sound and lighting systems, building performance sets and anything else needed to make a wonderful experience for its members. He was very gen16

obituaries erous with his gifts and time and was always willing to make or do things for other people and often bought and donated the supplies that were needed for the projects. Roger was a gifted photographer and even built a dark room in his garage where he spent numerous hours developing the black and white photos and portraits he took of his family throughout the years.

Jon David Mitlyng was born in Montevideo, MN on July 25, 1944 to Arnold D. Mitlyng and Agnes T. (Belsaas) Mitlyng. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Baxter and continued to be a member there all of his life. Jon graduated from Montevideo High School in 1961. After graduating high school in 1961, he joined the US Navy and served for four years. Jon and Marion Maus were married in 1964 and returned in 1975 to the family farm to carry out his passion of farming. He was a member of VFW Post 380.

Jon is survived by his wife, Marion D. Mitlyng of Clara City, MN; two sons: Matthew (Anita) Mitlyng of Anoka, MN and David (Tristie) Mitlyng of Denver, CO; five grandchildren: Alicia, Demie, Andrew, James, and Gregory; nine greatgrandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth A. (Paul) Gustafson of Ely, MN; and numerous extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents: Arnold and Agnes Mitlyng; a stillborn son, Lance D. Mitlyng; and a sister, Judy Marshall.

I play with easily 300 musicians from here and Los Angeles, as well as contracting them for corporate gigs I book. At least 280 of them were democratic Bernie socialists. I can’t begin to tell you how disillusioned and nauseated they are to find that the Democrats they voted for, because they thought the Dems looked out for the little guy, are now screwing them in order to get more money from the gig economy.

Here’s the best part.

It’s understandable that clueless state politicians who have no idea how the real world works would come up with something as destructive as AB5.

Dems control the Assembly, Senate, and governorship in California, so they can do whatever they want.

What blew Dem Socialist musicians’ minds was that for two months, musicians graphically explained to lawmakers how AB5 would destroy the gig music economy and drive them out of business. The response was literally, “We hear you, but trust us. We know what’s best for you.”

And every Democrat candidate for president enthusiastically backs AB5. (Yes, even Bernie.) And, yes, Monique Limón and Hannah-Beth Jackson toed the party line and voted for AB5.

One would be foolish to vote for them again, especially if you are an independent contractor.

Parking Structure Homes?

I

sit in my home, grieving the loss of a street friend who died after weeks of being sick. The rain is dumping down in sheets. I try to imagine where they go now. After numerous letters to the Board of Supervisors with no responsible action, the homeless sit outside. No warming shelters. No toilets unlocked. No food two nights per week in the parks. No medical attention.

We are all inside doing our part to flatten the curve. Yet our county electeds leave the most vulnerable out clustered together for safety in the streets, in encampments. They have no food, so they dumpster dive. They have no toilets, so guess where they are going?

If a homeless person gets ill, they will isolate them in a motel, they say. Our homeless are used to going to a park and finding Doctors Without Walls to check them out. Who the heck do they go to now?

How are you going to know when to isolate them?

The county received funds from the governor to house them in motels. It is unconscionable to ignore it. If the street people get ill, it will be too late before you know it, and they will need hospitalization.

Guess who will fill our few isolation beds?

You have choices. You have funds. Stop ignoring this part of our community!

Take the library’s three-story parking lot; place them in one parking space with two spaces between them. They will be dry and out of the wind. They can go to the upper level for sun. Bring portable toilets per floor. Bring wash stations and Showers of Blessing. Many people offer food, and more will step up. Outreach can check how people are doing and report ailing people before it turns chronic.

Waiting is criminal. Immediate action is needed.

Andi is hosting a weekly Window of Fortune game, in which she puts up the blank tiles of a word or phrase on a Monday and then slowly fills in the letters over the coming days. Passersby try to solve the puzzle by texting her at (209) 483-8070. The earlier in the week they guess correctly, the more tickets they earn for the Saturday raffle. The last two puzzles were “GARLIC MASHED POTATOES” and “ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER.” It’s a fun distraction for everyone, Andi said, but it’s also a meaningful way to meet and chat with neighbors. “That’s a silver lining to all this,” she said.

“The people who walked by every day with their dog — and maybe we never learned their name or who they are — we’re finally connecting with them,” she said. “It’s such a tangible thing in this really difficult time. I hope it sticks.”

ancy Rodriguez grew up with dogs, so she wasn’t aware of that funny but unnerving habit cats have of staring at people while they sleep. “I woke up and he was right there, looking right at me,” Rodriguez said of her first night with Fish, the young, medium-haired stray she’s fostering for ASAP, the Animal Shelter Assistance Program.

“It was terrifying.” She slowly fell back asleep, and the next time she awoke, Fish was curled up next to her in the dark, dreaming about kibble, toys, and the mysteries of his little universe.

Rodriguez, the Independent’s digital editor, and Fish have become fast friends in the two weeks since she picked him up from ASAP on March 26, her birthday. The shelter was rolling out its emergency closure plan after Governor Newsom ordered the state on lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus. In a matter of five hours, ASAP handed off all 50 of its cats to impromptu caretakers who answered the call for help and lined up to take carrier after carrier through their car windows. “I’ve been doing this work for 18 years,” said director Angela Walters, “and I’d never seen anything like it. The community response was just incredible.”

Since then, ASAP has helped pair another 60 cats from facilities across Santa Barbara County with foster parents. “It’s a whole different model of remote sheltering,” said Walters. The organization does its best to make the right matches — “It’s a little like blind dating,” Walters said — and with the stay-at-home order still in place, prioritizes placing cats with people who are alone and particularly isolated. ASAP has also had to create a virtual adoption process on the fly, but they’re already seeing a lot of success — 22 of the foster parents say they want to permanently adopt, and another 85 outside applications are pending.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez and Fish are making the most of these strange times together. Initially very shy, Fish is spending more and more time outside the safety of Rodriguez’s bedroom closet. Things that used to send him scampering — the window, bird sounds, Rodriguez’s roommate — are finally less scary, and now he’s playing like the rough-and-tumble youngster that he is. During our Zoom interview, he even made a quick cameo in front of the camera.

Rodriguez thanked ASAP for making the process so easy. They provided her food, a bed, litter, and everything else she needed, and they even footed the bill for a late-night vet visit. “Every single interaction I’ve had with them, you can tell they really, really care,” she said.

Rodriguez is now thinking about giving Fish a permanent home. “He’s just so sweet,” she said.

Our dinner was a taste of the good life we seek as residents of this unique place called Santa Barbara, a reminder of the very recent past, and a flash of hope for a future we all hope returns soon.

never expected our family’s knight in shining armor to show up wearing a chef ’s jacket and latex gloves, toting plastic bags full of food and drinks. But there was Igor Korpak, sous chef at Convivo, coming up our driveway with Saturday night’s dinner in his prophylactically protected hands.

We were a few weeks deep into the coronavirus shutdown, and my last meal in a restaurant was a spicy Sunday-morning scramble at the Cajun Kitchen on March 15. We’d been eating just fine at home, from blue-cheese burgers and ahi tuna lettuce wraps to buttermilk fried chicken, salmon en papillote, and cast-iron tenderloin.

I love cooking, but eating at restaurants is probably my favorite hobby, and our family of four is accustomed to dining out multiple times each week. We were craving something made by someone other than myself, and I was ready for a break from this newly steady stove life.

So when Convivo’s owner/chef Peter McNee texted to say he wanted my family to try out his new takeout/delivery menu, called Provisional, I immediately obliged. Frankly, while I’ve urged others to support restaurants in this odd outbreak era and have read repeatedly that COVID-19 can’t be transmitted through food, we’d been reluctant to toss a variable into our successfully sheltered situation. But I’ve come to know McNee through eating at his Cabrillo Boulevard restaurant quite a lot in the last few years, and I trusted him to be extra careful with his procedures.

After the sous chef savior sped off, my wife disinfected every box and moved every item to our own flatware. (In an abundance of caution, she also threw out the fancy bartending ice, to my chagrin.) Minutes later, my daughter was mumbling “Mmmm” over fettuccelle with broccoli shoots and peas, my cocktail fix was quelled via the premixed Negroni (and then boulevardier), and my

“We have an obligation as a restaurant in Santa Barbara to stay open and feed people, honestly,” McNee told me a few days later over the phone. “We’re all struggling with the same reality of today together, even though we’re very far apart.”

When the statewide shutdown occurred, McNee tried to sell the regular menu for about a week but quickly found the full-service model made little sense. He closed for nearly a week, and then reopened on March 26 as Provisional, the first time in his long career that delivery and takeout became center stage.

“It’s been recipe development all over again,” said McNee, who experimented by putting new menu items in to-go containers and checking them out 30 minutes later to simulate a delivery. The menu also offers provisions that I used on other meals throughout the week, including kimchi, Japanese pickles, labneh, pickled Fresno chiles, and a variety of dressings and sauces.

He’s also trying to have a tiny bit of fun with the new items. “You don’t put Stir-Crazy Fry on the menu unless you are trying to find humor in a very serious time,” said McNee. Convivo’s managing partner, Nicholas Nahigian, is selling wine basically at cost — bottles of red and white as cheap as $16! — and plans to start selling discounted wine from the cellar as well. “If you can get a $120 Barolo for $60, why not?” he said. “A Barolo and fried KITCHEN CHANGES: The Black Sheep’s sous chef, Alex Zubia, fills to-go boxes with food for an order, chicken sounds like my something they’ve really never done. dream night.”

Convivo is just one of hundreds of Santa Barbara restaurants that are pivoting to survive the shutdown, whose uncertain timeline carries the scariest weight.

As for many of you, social media is a constant source of information and entertainment, and I was immediately impressed by the strategy at Black Sheep, the East Ortega Street restaurant run by father and son Robert and Ruben Perez. The family has always been nimble, shifting concepts from seafood to Latin to Asian to the current hybrid, which is popular both with millennial hipsters and old-school foodies.

“We’ve never been a restaurant to do to-go food,” said Ruben Perez, who actually expanded hours to include lunch during this time. “It’s a little bit of an extra challenge.”

Though à la carte items remain on the menu, most customers are opting for the new family meals, which change every day of the week, from coq au vin to Indonesian fried rice to multi-meat parrillada. The $50 meals, which are announced each Monday for the coming week, are designed as a value for customers, but also to keep his staff enthused.

“We’re artists,” said Perez. “For us, it’s really important to keep cooking food and getting creative so that we don’t get stagnant and end up in a funky head space.”

COFFEE COMFORTS Last week, my wife surprised the family with a delivery of oat-milk latte, chai, and chocolate croissants from Dune Coffee Roasters, our second delivery experience. Owners Julia Mayer and Todd Stewart opened their first coffee shop in 2009 (then called The French Press), and our son was born months later.

We then lived downtown on West Valerio Street, so the café became a routine hangout for the three of us during the most memorable time of our lives. Having a familiar sip of that at home last week amid Zoom meetings and virtual elementary school meant a lot.

“It feels like a grounding moment of normalcy to have coffee,” said Mayer, whose mom works in the emergency room. “We can at least provide something that makes people feel good during this deeply uncertain time.”

Over the past weekend, my family found simi-

larly warm familiarity in a pickup and smiling waves from C’est Cheese owners Kathryn and Michael Graham, who developed their Santa Barbara shop when I lived directly across the street in the early 2000s. And takeout of noodles, egg rolls, coconut soup, and pot stickers from Empty Bowl in the Public Market was another much-needed treat this past Saturday, requiring just a phone call and patience amid the Restaurant Connection delivery drivers who huddled in appropriate spacing outside.

f you’ve ever been to the Fiesta Cantina on Wednesday night for Spencer the Gardener, or lolled on the grass at Alameda Park watching the bands play on a balmy Solstice afternoon, you know what a huge part of the Santa Barbara experience it is to come together for music and art.

We have a tradition in this city that’s as old as the courthouse and as deep as the channel of using art to create community, and we’ve never needed it more than we do today.

The Art of Community: Apart Together is a twoday “home-cooked” live music festival that will be taking place online Friday-Saturday, April 10-11, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Facebook (facebook.com/unitedbyart805). It can also be accessed via the organization’s website, unitedby.art. The lineup includes a who’s who of Santa Barbara musicians, including Glen Phillips, Tina Schlieske, Lois Mahalia, Alastair Greene, Cougar Estrada, Tariqh Akoni, Trent Summar, Brad Nack, Justin Fox, Estrella and Aaron Campos of Key Party, Zach Madden, and, of course, Spencer Barnitz.

Each artist will be live streaming an approximately 25-minute set that begins either on the hour

or the half hour. Artists will be encouraging viewers to donate to helping organizations of their choice, but the show is not primarily a fundraiser. Instead, it’s a chance to bring back the feeling that so many of us crave right now — the sense of community that made us all love Santa Barbara to begin with.

Organized by Todd Capps and a plucky band of community supporters, United by Art is dedicated to bringing neighbors out of their homes and into the streets. Their Community Table events and pop-up performances have brought joy to thousands while creating an atmosphere in which people feel comfortable meeting and talking to their neighbors about what it means to share this incredible place.
