Art Without Limits creates intensive one-on-one mentorships for aspiring

Santa Barbara County artists, teens and above. We pair them with professional artists and business experts to help them succeed in their chosen art form. We encourage emerging arts organizations by acting as their fiscal sponsor until they acquire their own nonprofit certification. We support community projects fostering our future artists.

What is it??

“ACDC” is a FREE full-day conference providing teens and young adults the opportunity to interact with forty professional artists and businesspeople, and to engage with speakers, participate in roundtable discussions, mingle, enjoy the live entertainment of young talent, and enjoy a complimentary lunch.

The conference’s young participants leave with the knowledge that Santa Barbara’s artists are there to help, guide, and mentor them and are just a phone call away. Most importantly, participants learn what it takes to become successful artists.

Who’s involved

AWoL is ACDC’s lead agency, collaborating with other arts groups, including SB City College, SB County Arts Commission, SB Bowl, SB County Education Office, Rod Lathim, Dug Uyesaka, Carey Hobart, Performing Arts League, and the Visual Arts and Design Academy at SB High School. The venue is sponsored by the SBCC Theater Department.

Highlighted Speakers JOHN DALY, our 2014 Keynote Speaker,has had an illustrious career as a high-class event presenter working with presidents, movie stars, and Fortune 500 clients. With only a high school education, he moved himself up the ladder with high-quality work and the ability to speak to people. He founded Key Class, which is a program that teaches etiquette and protocol, as well as job-hunting and interviewing skills to youth and veterans. He works closely with Partners in Education, The Work Force Investment Board, United Way, and the CADA teen court program.

MARY-GRACE LANGHORNE, the 12-year-old blues singing Santa Barbara Teen Star 2014, was recently selected to visit Europe this summer in the People to People Ambassador program. Last year Mary-Grace reacted to a medication and was paralyzed and bedridden for six months. She will get up and walk within the year. With the great love of her family, the care of a few heroic doctors, and her passionate singing, her spirit is revived! She is so proud to be here, doing what she loves – performing!

CECILY STEWART created “Library Dances,” to bring high school students current literary studies into dance form. Her choreography will be performed at this conference and in

May at San Marcos High with students coming from other schools to see. State St. dancers will perform along with Cecily’s students at San Marcos. Cecily has been dancing with State Street Ballet for 4 years and other ballet companies prior to that. She is being mentored in this project by Julie McLeod.

JULIE MCLEOD is the founder and director of Art Without Limits, and draws on her experiences of dancing in the original production Broadway of “West Side Story,” her 30 years with SB Dance Alliance, and her 20 year studio Dance Warehouse. She is passionate about giving artists the tools to make a successful career.

She has been the leading force of the Art Career Day Conference.

ROD LATHIM is a native Santa Barbaran who embraces his lifelong goal of utilizing the arts to effect social change. He is a social activist, and a pioneer of the accessible theatre movement on a national level. His cuttingedge vision has enabled him to create and develop programs, arts organizations, and The Marjorie Luke Theatre. He is an award-winning writer, director, and producer of theatre and film, and an effective, sought-after administrator and manager. He has been honored for his significant contributions to arts and culture in Santa Barbara.

professional status or have short-term or unique needs are given a 10- to 15-hour mentorship with a professional artist and attend business workshops for guidance to the next level of their training.

The Mentorship » AWoL Pairs its emerging artists with a professional mentor for up to 100 hours of guidance.

They are given mentorships at no charge but are asked to contribute time and energy to AWoL and their mentors.

Emerging 27-year-old poet, Dan La Bellarte has written since the age of 9. He applied to AWoL, writing his application in verse, for guidance to have his work more visible and widely heard, we paired him with F. Albert Salinas. Dan now reads regularly at open events, is preparing his first collection of poems for publication, is connecting with our entire community of poets, and has been invited to read in Los Angeles.

Albert now says, “Who is mentoring whom? Dan and I take turns astounding each other with our poetry.” Dan and Albert are now both colleagues and friends. Dan says, “From day one, Albert has grabbed me by the hand at every opportunity to get my work out there. I know that he is proud of me and that has given me so much inspiration to reach my goals.”

Fiscal Sponsorship » AWoL has twenty arts groups and artists that we serve with fiscal sponsorship, grant writing guidance, and our business workshops. Some have gone on to receive their own 501(c)(3) status.

Peer to Peer » Skilled high school students teach art

techniques to underserved younger students in exchange for Community Service Hours.

Coming Out Party » An annual AWoL event is held

in January to celebrate the art of our emerging artists. At this gallery event, we toast our artists’ work, and share refreshments, stories, and the manifestation of their dreams among the friends of AWoL.
