FACES OF FRIENDSHIP: Member: Alyce Scerbo

Alyce was a Radio City Music Hall Rockette and still has a joyful spirit, a love for fun and festivity, and great legs! Her most recent adventure was rockclimbing.

Her daughter says, “My mom originally did not want to go to Friendship Center. She thought it was a place for old people. But once she saw what it was like, she loved it. It makes her very happy, which makes me very happy.”

Alyce says, “I plan my week around my visits to Friendship Center. Everyone is so warm and friendly, the Connection classes really make me think, and the food is delicious!”

Caregiver: Alicia Lancashire

Alicia grew up in Argentina, and her father, Juan, spoke Italian and Spanish as well as English. He was a thoughtful, kind man who enjoyed sitting out in our courtyard reading the newspaper. And always a sharp dresser!

“Friendship Center gave my dad purpose in his life after my mother passed away,” she says. “My heart is filled with gratitude for the incredible work they do every day for our loved ones."

Alicia has supported Friendship Center generously in many ways, including providing her gracious home for donor appreciation events.

Volunteer: Dean Mars

Dean is a man of many talents—sculptor, photographer, and videographer. He wrote an astronomy column, “Stars By Mars” in the Montecito Journal and produced a show for Channel 17, “Movies By Mars.” Last year, he joined the ranks of Friendship Center volunteers and has quickly become a star there, conducting art classes and contributing his irrepressible enthusiasm.

“Making art with members of Friendship Center is too much fun!” he says.” Staff and other volunteers are so helpful and supportive that just being there is a rewarding experience.”

DID YOU KNOW...

Alzheimer’s is one of the biggest public health concerns for the coming decades, not because the disease is being diagnosed in any greater magnitude, but simply because we are living longer.

Over the next 15 years, a Baby Boomer will turn 65 every 12 seconds. As a nation, we are poised for a huge spike in our elder population due to the aging of this demographic.

Currently, about 5.4 million older Americans (1 in 8) have Alzheimer’s. By the year 2050, this national total could rise as high as 16 million.

According to a recent study, the top service requested among caregivers in Santa Barbara County is respite care.

• Have to leave your loved one alone for errands or work and feel concern for his/her safety when you’re not there?

• Find yourself taking increasing time off from work to care for your loved one?

• Notice your once-peaceful relationship becoming troubled with more arguments or flare-ups of temper?

• Want the peace of mind knowing your loved one is not only cared for during the day but provided nutritious meals, socialization and lively activities?

• The daily cost of the program is based upon families’ ability to pay, each case individually considered by the Family Services Director • Qualified veterans’ fees are paid by Veterans Administration • Tri-Counties Regional Center clients are eligible for reduced fees As less than half of Friendship Center’s operating expenses are covered by participant contributions, we rely on the generosity of our community for the rest. A tax-deductible donation to our H.E.A.R.T. (Help Elders At Risk Today) Program subsidizes the cost of our services for the nearly 70% of members and their families who qualify as low-income.

WHAT'S NEW AT FRIENDSHIP CENTER?

Healthy Aging!

Brain Fitness for Successful Aging is a new six-week series, a neuroscience-based program not just for seniors, but for those approaching and experiencing middle age who want to “rewire” and strengthen their brains while relieving stress and inviting more vibrancy into their lives. Led by Friendship Center’s Family Services Director, Kai Hoye, MSW. Our weekly Connections class continues (Mondays in Montecito and Wednesdays in Goleta), embracing many elements of Brain Fitness, such as puzzles and games to exercise the brain, and also includes a support-group component to help ease anxieties and fears for those with mild memory loss.
