Anthony E. Beebe, Ph.D., Ed.D. Superintendent/President

I AM PLEASED TO SHARE WITH YOU OUR FIRST ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY! Since coming to Santa Barbara City College a year ago, I have made it a priority for the College to strengthen our ties to our community. In order to achieve this, we have sought input from across our Community College District and have plans in place to be more responsive to the needs in our community.

Santa Barbara City College has been a local institution since 1909 and has a rich history of educating generations in our local community. Our college has become an integral part of past, present and future generations of Santa Barbara County residents. This history of excellence has been evident in the stories of former students who achieved their educational goals and in those who continue their City College education. SBCC continues to be recognized as the No.1 community college in the nation—both a testament to the caliber and dedication of our students and our team of faculty and staff.

OUR VISION Santa Barbara City College strives to build a socially conscious community where knowledge and respect empower individuals to transform our world.

This report represents my first year as President of this fine educational institution.

I am proud of the work we do—changing the world, one student at a time. This has been a year of change and reflection at the college. We are moving forward with a wide range of initiatives that seek to strengthen our ties to the community and look to the future to ensure we continue to meet the needs of future students.

In addition to supporting these efforts, the Board has made a commitment to reaching out to our community to hear first-hand about the challenges and opportunities facing the college. In the last year, the Board has created several Ad Hoc committees with this goal in mind. They include a group to address impacts and mitigation opportunities and a committee focused on community partnerships. The board has also begun formalizing a legislative liaison role within the Board and has created a K-12 representative to maintain strong collaboration with our K-12 partners.

We are proud of our incredible educational institution and are happy to share highlights of the academic year with you.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDATION “I simply want to celebrate the fact that right near your home, year in and year out, a community college is quietly—and with very little financial encouragement—saving lives and minds. I can’t think of a more efficient, hopeful or egalitarian machine, with the possible exception of the bicycle.”

I love this quote because it puts one simple truth front and center: that community colleges across the country do the hard work of offering educational opportunities to one and all, often without much fanfare. It is hard to think of a more important mission for our families, community or economy.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FIRST YEAR OF THE SBCC PROMISE

Then there is that aside: “...and with very little financial encouragement.” SBCC is exceptional in many ways. Among them is the fact that a broad base of community supporters has long recognized its value and have invested in the institution and its students. The SBCC Foundation was created more than four decades ago to bridge the gap between the available public funds and the resources necessary to be an extraordinary college.

• 756 local students enrolled in the SBCC Promise (Fall 2016) • 85% completed all requirements and enrolled for the Spring 2017 semester

I cannot remember a moment when the eyes of the nation were more focused on the work of community colleges. Student debt is now a national economic crisis ($1.4 trillion and growing), the divide between those with post-secondary education and those without has never been greater, and educators across the country continue to wrestle with the achievement gap between students of different races and ethnicities.

This lends urgency to our work at the SBCC Foundation, as we partner with our community and college to secure the resources that will ensure that each and every student has the opportunity to excel and achieve their goals. SBCC has long been an innovator in college access and success programs. With the launch of the SBCC Promise, we are again at the vanguard­, building the country’s most ambitious privately funded college promise.

Investing in Our

COMMUNITY

SBCC PROMISE In fall 2016, the SBCC Foundation launched the SBCC Promise, an ambitious new effort to remove barriers, and make our community’s college accessible and affordable to all local students who have recently completed their secondary education within the SBCC district.

The idea of a “college promise” is not new, but the SBCC Promise is revolutionary in that it is comprehensive (covers all

required fees, books and supplies), robust (covers two full years), and open access (not restricted based on past academic performance). Eligibility is determined by a student’s high school location, year of graduation, and commitment to the SBCC Promise eligibility requirements (details at sbccpromise.org).

Research on college achievement correlates a student’s chance of success in college with early enrollment, full-time student status, and access to academic counseling and support. The SBCC Promise is specifically designed to incentivize these three elements.

It is also an exemplary model of a public/private partnership, as 100% of the funding for the SBCC Promise was privately raised from donors to the SBCC Foundation.

CELEBRATING SBCC RETIREES SBCC said goodbye to 71 retirees who collectively represent 1,650 years of service. Among the retirees were 23 faculty members, 10 administrators and 38 classified staff.

EDUCATION

STEM SUCCESS The College was awarded a $5.3 million federal grant to support students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The project “Removing Barriers to STEM Success” will provide resources for faculty wishing to update curriculum for relevance to the changing job market.

GUIDED PATHWAYS Santa Barbara City College was selected, along with 19 other schools, to participate in the California Guided Pathways Project. The project will help California Community Colleges implement an integrated, institution-wide approach to student success by creating structured educational experiences that support each student from beginning to end.

SBCC PROMISE Provides any local student who completes their secondary education within the Santa Barbara Community College District with the opportunity to attend SBCC full-time for two years free of charge. The Promise helps make our community’s college fully accessible to all local students. A total of 843 students enrolled in the first year.

SALLY SAENGER RECEIVES HAYWARD AWARD Physical Education Instructor Sally Saenger was named a recipient of the prestigious Hayward Award, making her the 10th SBCC faculty to receive this award. The Hayward Award is an annual recognition honoring four community college faculty members statewide who have a track record of excellence both in teaching and in professional activities and have demonstrated commitment to their students, profession, and college.

38TH ANNUAL FACULTY LECTURE The Faculty Lecture featured Mathematics Professor Pam Guenther, who presented “I Think I Can: Applying Neuroscience and Noncognitive Research in the Classroom.” In her lecture, Guenther explained that many traits, abilities and talents thought to be fixed at birth are actually malleable and can be changed even in adults. This is called neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to be shaped by experience. Guenther’s fascinating presentation explored current research in this area as well as practical methods of learning that teachers, parents and learners can apply in their daily lives and in the classroom.

LOS ANGELES RIVER: URBAN RECLAMATION Los Angeles-native artist and avid fisherman Devon Tsuno shared his embedded perspective of the environment from the place where land and water meet. Tsuno’s abstract paintings, socially engaged projects, artist books and print installations focus on the Los Angeles River watershed, water use and native versus non-native vegetation.

LEONARDO DORANTES MEMORIAL LECTURE SBCC’s annual Dorantes Lecture, established in memory of a beloved City College student who died in a raciallymotivated tragedy, featured political satirist and host of the CNN television docu-series “United Shades of America” W. Kamau Bell. In his discussion titled “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour,” given the day after the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, Bell offered a comedic, eye-opening discussion on race in America, in addition to his candid musings on the country’s newly-elected President.

SEND SILENCE PACKING Eleven hundred backpacks were spread across the West Campus Lawn. They represented the average number of college students who end their lives each year. The event, created by the nonprofit organization Active Minds, served to de-stigmatize college student suicide, educate and assist students in speaking openly about mental health, and encourage students to get help.

Send Silence Packing was co-sponsored by SBCC and the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness and supported by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Many of the backpacks were owned by suicide victims themselves and personal stories written by friends and loved ones were attached to a number of them.

NEW SBCC ART FACULTY: OFFICE OF LOSS CONTROL EXHIBIT In the Office of Loss Control exhibit, the Santa Barbara City College Atkinson Gallery featured the works of the Art Department’s two new faculty members, Armando Ramos and Stephanie Washburn. Ramos and Washburn both scratched the veneer of contemporary life through the pointed, and often darkly humorous, combination of images appropriated from popular culture and media.

SPRING PRODUCTIONS The Theatre Group at SBCC presented two great productions in the Spring: The touching drama Rabbit Hole, written by David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Katie Laris; and A Flea in Her Ear, a new version of Georges Feydeau’s hilarious farce directed by R. Michael Gros.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE In an amazing collaborative effort, the Student Equity Committee hosted its First Annual SBCC Equity and Leadership Conference for Youth.

More than 700 high school students, City College students and community members joined in as the conference celebrated “belonging” as a community.

Focusing on equity and leadership, the conference offered many key moments for embracing SBCC as a safe place for all.

EARTH DAY This year, Earth Day was a major event held on our beautiful West Campus. The event brought representatives from the City of Santa Barbara, Marborg, Heal the Ocean and many more. Throughout the day, groups shared eco-friendly and sustainable solutions with students and the community—all were welcome.

President Beebe and Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider spoke about the importance of renewable energy, recycling efforts and the desire to make Santa Barbara and SBCC a more sustainable city and college.

PET THERAPY For finals week, therapy dogs were brought to West Campus outside of Luria Library to relieve student stress.

Students smiled as they gathered to pet and play with the friendly dogs. All of the dogs who participated received specialized training with their human partner from All for Animals and are certified as therapy dogs by Love on a Leash, The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy.

La Playa Stadium

A PROUD DAY! The La Playa stadium celebration marked the conclusion of the College’s academic year and a successful point along the educational journey of 1,526 graduating students.

Approximately 650 students participated in the oceanfront Commencement ceremony on May 12. During this academic school year, more than 3,400 degrees and certificates were awarded to approximately 1,600 students. Commencement featured remarks by President Beebe and other distinguished members of the college.

We know that people, when given an opportunity, can change the trajectory of their lives and make their own beautiful history.

MATTHEW P. POULIN Student Commencement Speaker Matthew Phelps Poulin graduated from Santa Barbara City College with a long list of academic accomplishments. Maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher since Fall 2012, Poulin completed two degrees and was named 2016-2017 Student of the Year by the Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS).

While at SBCC, he was an active volunteer with both Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue and Santa Barbara County Medical Reserve Corps EMT basic.

NEW CLASSROOM BUILDING

Through the support of Measure V, a bond passed in 2008, the College is completing a new West Campus classroom building. The building is expected to be ready for classes in 2018. This new building will house approximately 30, state-ofthe-art classrooms and will allow the College to remove many of the aging modular classroom buildings located throughout East Campus. This project will obtain the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. We are grateful to our community for their investment in a 21st Century learning environment for students.

Santa Barbara City College and the SBCC Foundation are grateful to Julie Nadel and the Nadel Foundation for their generous pledge of $1 million to the SBCC School of Business and Entrepreneurship. The endowment fund established with this gift will support, in perpetuity, the highest needs of the programs and initiatives of all academic disciplines that comprise the SBCC Business Division. In recognition of this generous gift, the Business Division will be named the Jack and Julie Nadel School of Business and Entrepreneurship.

SANTA BARBARA’S LARGEST CLASSICAL MUSIC EVENT The Music Academy’s largest community event to date, the New York Philharmonic, will bring 7,000 attendees to Santa Barbara City College’s oceanside La Playa Stadium on July 31, 2017!

The historic 70th Anniversary Community Concert will mark Alan Gilbert’s final appearance as New York Philharmonic Music Director. Maestro Gilbert will conduct Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, featuring Music Academy superstar alumna soprano Susanna Phillips (‘02,’03), tenor Joe Kaiser, and bass Morris Robinson as soloists in the work’s iconic Ode to Joy. The event will close with a stunning fireworks display over the ocean.

COSMETOLOGY ACADEMY MOVES DOWNTOWN The Santa Barbara City College Foundation has purchased the Paul Mitchell School of Santa Barbara building on 525 Anacapa St. for City College’s Cosmetology Academy.

The year-round cosmetology program will begin its classes in the new building mid-summer 2017 with the incoming Freshman cohort.

SCHOOL OF EXTENDED LEARNING Santa Barbara City College is excited to embrace a major new initiative. Our College President, our Board of Trustees and SBCC Educational Programs support our effort to build a world class and comprehensive School of Extended Learning that will benefit our community and adult learners. This new school will maximize tuition-free offerings and integrate pathways to our credit programs. We will seek to continually evaluate our course offerings to ensure we are meeting the extended learning needs in our community.
