Dream, dream big!

by Roger Carter, President Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

As we enter 2022, my prayer is for our entire community to put Disney’s quote to work. Our students are encouraged to dream and to dream big!

Our job as a school is to prepare our students with the confidence to reach those dreams.

I have no doubt 2022 will be a special year in the life of our school. I invite each of you to pray for our dreams and ask God to give us the courage to reach them!

San Miguel Alumni: When Dreams Come True Lupita Casas Guerrero graduated from San Miguel in 2009. She's a Registered Nurse at Hillcrest Medical Center. She got married in 2017. Her favorite title is Mom! Her daughter Vale was born last year and she loves dancing and singing!

"I have so many great memories of San Miguel," Lupita said. "I remember how Dr. Adams personally went to our homes and interviewed us before starting school and really got to know all of us and our families."

She described her school field trips with excitement and happiness. "We did 'journeys in film' and visited the Circle Cinema." She added that San Miguel students "were always part of the community and took part of the Church activities. We were encouraged to try new things and got very close as classmates. I still maintain the friendships I made there."

Lupita told us that "the ways our teachers helped us to grow and thrive as individuals was something I'll never forget," and she added that "in general, as students, we got a very well-rounded education where we received spiritual growth and got to learn a lot about our culture."

that before attending San Miguel and Cascia Hall she never really knew how far she could go. She said that thinking about college was not part of the picture. "I knew I had to work hard no matter

doing in life," she said.

Lupita continued describing her academic journey saying that San Miguel and Cascia Hall helped her achieving the dream of being her family's first college grad.

"They helped me find scholarships, how to navigate FAFSA and so much more," she said. "They helped me opening doors that were closed."

Going to College Oral Roberts University and The University of Tulsa said yes to Lupita! She was ready to go to college. However, her mother was fighting cancer, so, she had to hit pause. "She passed away December 30, 2012, right before I graduated from high school.

She was my biggest cheerleader," she said. "I felt a calling to become a nurse after seeing what a difference they made in my mom's case. I attended Tulsa Community College and had all of my education covered through scholarships and financial aid. I followed the path I needed to become a Registered Nurse."

Lupita did not give up. She kept studying and working full time.

"Nursing school was not easy," she said. "It was hard work and dedication to get to my goal, but I made it!"

Of course, we asked about her favorite things. This is what she told us: Book: Como Agua para Chocolate, Gone with the Wind.

Meet the 'Buena Onda' Muralist We are sure you love our 'Buena Onda' (Good Vibes) mural! We talked to the artist that created it: Brady Scott.

Our mural was part of the Kendall Whittier Walls Project in 2019, a special initiative to develop several large-scale art pieces along the Historic Route 66.

San Miguel was not the original location; however, Scott did not give up, so he adapted his creative concept to our school. He needed one weekend to complete the mural. "My two kids helped with the background," he said, while adding that he's been painting murals since 2016.

"My favorite mural is always the one I am working on and planning next," Scott said. "I really try to challenge myself and learn new techniques with every mural."

The 'Buena Onda' mural has a fun anecdote. A small typo. Scott had to traveled back to Tulsa (he lives in the beautiful rolling hills of central Kansas) to fix it.

"My favorite quote is: 'Done is always better than perfect' I think that says a great deal about how to live an artist's life," he said. "Many artists, including myself get caught up in the idea of scarcity and fear. We tend to procrastinate and have so many excuses to give up or not start a piece. But those words of wisdom always help me press on, finish my current project and start on the next."

How San Miguel takes a hammer to the cycle of poverty

San Miguel intentionally seeks out kids that are behind their grade level, facing poverty, and a truly challenging environment. Their ZIP code is a massive barrier that prevent them from chasing their dreams, from finishing high school, from attending college, from breaking an endless cycle of poverty. However; San Miguel defies all odds, following the Lasallian educational approach.

It serves as a model of innovative education, academically rigorous, and non-tuition driven, with small classroom size – 12 students – focusing on the mastery of basic skills –language arts and math – while nurturing the physical and emotional well-being of each kid.

Breakfast, lunch, study hall, and tutoring are fundamental pieces of an extended day and school year that accelerates achievements.

San Miguel does not stop there. Our school stands by its graduates, offering mentoring and high school and college guidance. The results?

Tangible hope for a thriving future, allowing students and families to fulfill their dream of making it better for them and for the next generation.

HISTORIAS DE SAN MIGUEL "Ingresa para aprender, emprende camino para servir"

¡Soñando en grande!

Roger Carter, Presidente Walt Disney dijo una vez: "Todos nuestros sueños pueden hacerse realidad si tenemos el coraje de perseguirlos".

Al empezar el 2022, mi oración es que toda nuestra comunidad ponga en práctica la frase de Disney. ¡Vamos a darle ánimo a nuestros estudiantes a soñar y a soñar en grande! Nuestro trabajo como escuela es preparar a nuestros estudiantes con la confianza necesaria para alcanzar esos sueños.

No tengo ninguna duda de que el 2022 será un año especial en la vida de nuestra escuela. ¡Los invito a cada uno de ustedes a orar por nuestros sueños y pedirle a Dios que nos dé el valor para alcanzarlos! ¡Feliz año nuevo 2022! ¡Tengan la Paz de Dios!

San Miguel Alumni: Los Sueños se hacen realidad Lupita Casas Guerrero se graduó de San Miguel en el 2009. Es enfermera registrada en el Hospital Hillcrest. Se casó en el 2017. Sin embargo, su título favorito es: ¡Mamá! Su hija Vale nació el año pasado y le encanta bailar y cantar.

"Tengo tantos y buenos recuerdos de San Miguel", dijo Lupita. "Recuerdo cómo el Dr. Adams fue personalmente a cada uno de nuestros hogares y nos

entrevistó

escuela

y

realmente

llegó

a

conocernos a todos nosotros y a nuestras familias".

Ella describió sus excursiones escolares con entusiasmo y felicidad.

"Hicimos 'viajes en el cine' y visitamos el Circle Cinema". Agregó que los estudiantes de San Miguel "siempre fueron parte de la comunidad y participaron de las actividades de la Iglesia todo el tiempo. Siempre nos animaron a probar cosas nuevas y nos hicimos muy cercanos como compañeros de clase. Aún mantengo las amistades que hice allí".

Lupita nos dijo que "las formas en que nuestros maestros nos ayudaron a crecer y prosperar como individuos fue algo que nunca olvidaré", y agregó que "en general, como estudiantes obtuvimos una educación muy completa en la que recibimos crecimiento espiritual, una gran formación y aprendí mucho sobre nuestra cultura".

quería ir allá. Me dió una base tan sólida para seguir adelante en mi educación", dijo. "Realmente disfruté las actividades extracurriculares. Fui parte de obras de teatro y pude hacer algunas exposiciones de

arte.

Lupita continuó describiendo su trayectoria académica.

San Miguel y Cascia Hall la ayudaron a lograr el sueño de ser la primera graduada universitaria de su familia. "Me ayudaron a encontrar becas, navegar FAFSA fa y mucho más", dijo. "Me ayudaron a abrir puertas que estaban cerradas".

¡Para la Universidad! ¡La Universidad Oral Roberts y la Universidad de Tulsa le dijeron que sí a Lupita! Estaba lista para ir a la universidad. Sin embargo, la vida tenía un plan diferente. Su madre estaba luchando contra el cáncer, así que tuvo que hacer una pausa.

"Falleció el 30 de diciembre del 2012, justo antes de que me graduara de la escuela secundaria. Había sido mi mayor apoyo", dijo. "Sentí el llamado de convertirme en enfermera después de ver la diferencia que marcaron en el caso de mi madre. Fui a Tulsa Community College y tuve toda mi educación cubierta a través de becas y ayuda financiera. Seguí el camino que necesitaba para convertirme en enfermera."

Lupita no se rindió. Siguió estudiando y trabajando a tiempo completo. "La escuela de enfermería no fue fácil", dijo. "Fueron años de arduo trabajo y dedicación para lograr mi objetivo, ¡pero lo logré!"

Por supuesto, le preguntamos sobre sus cosas favoritas. Esto es lo que ella nos dijo: Libro: Como Agua para Chocolate, Lo que el viento se llevó.

Conoce al Muralista 'Buena Onda' ¡Estamos seguros de que te encanta nuestro mural 'Buena Onda'! Hablamos con el artista que lo creó: Brady Scott.

Nuestro mural fue parte del Proyecto Murales de Kendall Whittier Walls en el 2019, una iniciativa especial para desarrollar varias piezas de arte a gran escala, a lo largo de la Ruta Histórica 66.

San Miguel no era la ubicación original; sin embargo, Scott no se rindió, por lo que adaptó su concepto creativo a nuestra escuela. Necesitó un fin de semana para completar el mural. "Mis dos hijos ayudaron con el fondo", dijo, y agregó que ha estado pintando murales desde el 2016.

"Mi mural favorito es siempre en el que estoy trabajando y planeando", dijo Scott. "Realmente trato de desafiarme a mí mismo y aprender nuevas técnicas con cada mural".

El mural 'Buena Onda' tiene una anécdota divertida. Un pequeño error tipográfico. Scott tuvo que viajar de regreso a Tulsa (vive en las hermosas colinas del centro de Kansas) para arreglarlo.

"Mi cita favorita es: 'Terminar algo siempre es mejor que perfecto' Creo que dice mucho sobre cómo vivir la vida de un artista", acotó. "Muchos artistas, incluyéndome a mí, nos vemos atrapados en la idea de escasez y miedo. Tendemos a posponer las cosas y tenemos tantas excusas para darnos por vencidos o no comenzar una obra. Pero esas palabras de sabiduría siempre me ayudan a seguir adelante, terminar mi proyecto actual, y empezar con el siguiente".

Cómo San Miguel acaba con el ciclo de la pobreza Juan Miret, Director of Desarrollo

San Miguel busca intencionalmente a los niños que están rezagados de su nivel de grado, que enfrentan la pobreza y un entorno verdaderamente desafiante. Su código postal es una barrera enorme que les impide perseguir sus sueños, terminar la escuela secundaria, asistir a la universidad, y romper así un ciclo interminable de pobreza. Sin embargo, San Miguel enfrenta todas las probabilidades adversas, siguiendo el enfoque educativo de La Salle, sirviendo como un modelo de educación innovadora, académicamente rigurosa y no impulsada por matrícula, con aulas pequeñas (12 estudiantes) que se enfocan en el dominio de las habilidades básicas, artes del lenguaje y matemáticas - mientras se nutre el bienestar físico y emocional de cada niño.

El desayuno, el almuerzo, la sala de estudio y las tutorías completan un día extendido y un año escolar más largo, que acelera los logros.

Y San Miguel no se detiene allí, porque nuestra escuela apoya a sus graduados, ofreciendo mentores y orientación para la escuela secundaria y la universidad. ¿Los resultados? Esperanza tangible para un futuro próspero, que permita a los estudiantes y a sus familias cumplir su sueño de hacerlo mejor para ellos y para la próxima generación.
