Daniel Morgenstern’s French Double Manual Harpsichord #5 1977 is a faithful copy of the famous Taskin Harpsichord of 1769. His now 46-year-old son Michael is depicted as the cherub on the lid. Dan’s aunt, the late Esther M. Gilman, authentically painted and decorated 11 of the 12 Morgenstern Harpsichords, four of which are in Durango. The others are in private homes in Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, and Dallas, and one is at the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham, Mass. Number Five has played with many distinguished ensembles, including several performances of Mozart and Rossini operas by the Metropolitan Opera on tour in Cleveland in the days before the HD simulcasts. Dan is currently building his 13th instrument based on an 18th-century single manual instrument from Dresden.

Thanks to Daniel for the use of the instrument and daily maintenance during the Durango Bach Festival.
