01/Town hall TOWN HALL WITH YOUTH COMMUNITY CENTRE UNIT -6 | TUTORS: ISAIE BLOCH & JAKUB KLASKA. Project introduction.

“How much energy and time did you loose being stuck in a city hall, embassy or visa? Painstakingly wasting your life trying to get all the necessary paperwork as to be allowed to cross a non physical border, to register a child or to be allowed to study abroad?”

Following this years common theme “towards 0% carbon and 100% people” we will investigate the institution which sole purpose is to represent its citizens as well as its societal visions, in the most multicultural yet potentially most detached part of Europe, London UK. The growing complexity and intricacy of our civilization fuelled by digitalisation and automation presents new challenges to the way town halls and city halls should run and be used. Should these governmental institutions solely cater as administrative representation of their citizens and as such become obsolete, or could these operate as a novel mechanisms for communication between and with its citizens?

The City hall typology as is soon to become one of the most obsolete typologies in architecture as technology allows us to identify, share and process your identity and other human right matters remotely and more efficiently. We believe that architects should investigate the implications of fully automated administration on such institutions and as such re-investigate what other roles governmental buildings should provide to its citizens. Governing is in most cases occurring in administrative, authoritarian or colonial structures; very much detached from a citizen-oriented service nor participation. On top of that it is very likely that our current political climate in the EU might once more need to rely on these outdated micro institutions even more than before.

While taking into consideration the age of automation, the core strategy of the design argues for an ecologically conscious design. Timber being the one of the most important material for circular economy and the material of the future; the proposal is predominantly designed using timber and has an emphasis on the management of timber waste that is generated from the construction and use of the building, essential creating a circular economy.

Geometric Study.

Initial Research.

The first exercise was to duplicate the surface of the built structure to get a thorough understanding of spatial relationships, complexities of the geometry and other opportunities. Through low-polygon surface modelling, an iterative design process was made with respect to qualities concurred from the case study. The diagram represents the roof plan of the renzo piano -path’e foundation, which has spaces that are derived from the circulation in a continues geometry by evoking multi-directionality and spatial quality.

The diagram on the top right illustrates this idea, to generate. non-standard spaces from which a library of surfaces and spatial quality could be extracted.

Geometric Study.

Iterations of Articulated Surfaces.

The Case Study for this project which is located in the historic avenue des gobins .the building is an egg shaped construction boldly symbolises as an attempt to creative visionaries and designers in linking the past with the present and future through physical creations.the main structure is supported by being attached to the surroding building buildings at four points made of complex joints .it respects the site and its relationto the rest of the building s through improving their access natural light and better ventilation.

The complex geometric structure is supported by numerous laminated timber arches and a secondary steel construction that superimpose the outer skin of it shaped by double glazed curved glass panels that allow for ample sunlight to reach the office spaces of the foundation .

Each elelment of thre roof is attcahed to thr gulam arches which are comprised of the inner steel pipes which then attached the double curved glass glazing which are all unique in size and scale to that is attached the outer steel pipes which then allows the preforated aluminium panels to be attached creating the envelope for the building

The landscape grows up to the volume, to create interstitial spaces inside the volume, which can then be occupied by programs/functions. The form flows from triangulated geometries, to unfolded surfaces, which creates interesting opportunities for daylight to embrace the volume on the interior and exterior.

Articulated Surfaces.

Iteration of Roof surfaces.

The Iterations of the roof structure is essentially stemmed from the main circulation, which is derived from the massing studies done on site. The global shape of the roof is a continues articulated surface evoked by multi-directionality, horizontal and vertical spatial divide, which allows for spaces to be created from the main circulation itself. The final roof surface aims to implement several working combinations discovered in previous experimentations.

Timber tectonic study model

Group Work Developed as part of a group project, wherein the final iteration model of one of the group member, was further developed and resolved tectonically, in order to explore different alternative methods of timber construction. The photographs above are 1:20 scale model of resolving a differentiated sections chunk model.

Bird eye view.

Perceptive showing how the new proposal creates a connection in-between the town hall and youth centre along the river side view .creating a circulation in different level make a project interesting and adding connectivity to the different level allow the people to enjoy different level along the river side view . With sustainable and bio-diverse strategies at its core, this creates an atmosphere for better learning through architecture and planning.

Technical Fragment.

Chunk Model The technical chunk shows, how the primary structure for the permanentroof, accommodates the structure required to support the flooring and how these loads are transferred into the foundation slab; resulting in a tectonically resolved composite structure. The thickness of the primary structures allows for services to be embedded between floor and cieling .

Tectonic Fragment.

The structural load from the roof and floor in between are transferred Onto the primary structural member and received by the concrete footing. The inverted Glulam beam (60cmX40cm), and glulam cross beams(40cmX20cm) which are fastened onto the primary structure with metal profiles and bolts reduces the repetitive use of concrete footing and Increases the visual connectivity in the space.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

Structural build-up

The structure is made of prefabricated CLT panels, which are individually CNC Milled to achieve the form and when combined together form an intricate splice joint. Each part is prefabricated to transportable sizes and assembled on site. Each aggregation is strategically craned into position, after the metal plate is fixed onto the concrete footing. The aggregation is then bolted onto the metal plate using a double bolting system. This method of construction proves to be faster, precise and creates less timber waste.

From the sustainable managed forest trees are felled and prepared for the transport by removing the leaves and branches to the factory .Then trees are categories into grade A,or Grade B.and then they are processed into high quality timber products .

The process of manufacturing timber which helps to remove bark removal ,cutting to get veneers an sanding to produce plywood

Plywood wood to CLT

Individual plywoods boards ,with the direction of grains perpendicular to each other for each overlapping layer of boards are gathered and arranged to be cnc milled .so that why it provide strength .

CNC Milling CLT panels.

With the help of Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) milling, It is possible for each Cross-laminated panels (CLT) to obtain the Desired shape in 3-dimension, which allows for a faster and more Precise method to get complex forms in a planar orientation.

Along with this Glulam Beams are also CNC milled to get the Desired joinery.

Lamination.

cnc milled planar panels are stacked on top of each other and laminated using a bio-based glue ,in order to secure the thickness and structural stability .

Project introduction.

Buildings are becoming higher and higher nowadays in maximising land use and investment return.Construction of high rise residential developments are considered as a focal point of the construction industry in view of its huge labour contents and turnovers evolved due to its own nature of works and investments involved from the investors.Investors tend to build everything possible in a small piece of and to increase the return from their investment in the quickest possible manner.Practicioners in the construction industry are looking for different means and methods in enhancing effeiciency and meeting requirements from the stautory bodies and the clients.

To study the different construction techniques like cast-in-situ and precast adopted by major players for high rise development, analyse and compare them to determine the ones that would be most suitable in the Indian high rise construction scenario.

Fluid Architecture As architecture evolved, architects and designers were on a hunt of uniqueness in their designs. That is one of the major reasons that this concept got introduced.

The idea was simple : Get inspired, be innovative and design unique. Though this idea initiated the evolution of the concept, the derivative was to find how much an architect can explore with space. How much can a form be twisted and manipulated by an architect. The main challenge with this concept was how will the design become functional with the form.

Project introduction.

Concept.

A monumental prodigious structure has been erected with intriguing curves and angles blending with the waves flowing on the marina coast.

The memorial is a social and collective structure that commemorates amma’ life.

For a person who lived for the people, this memorial celebrates her life by giving back to the people of Tamil Nadu. Every structure and space have been designed keeping in mind the dynamic life she lived.

The cast in a place exposed concrete monument is conceived as an experiential environment comprising of deep intertwining and interlaced inclined walls. This Monument Symbolises the phoenix bird reflecting the resurrection of her strength that arises when we spell the name of J. Jayalalitha and this reflects her inner self and her fighting back personality.

The museum, on the northern side, showcasing the historical journey of Ms. J. Jayalalithaa’s life, encompasses a visiting museum with virtual reality shows on her life. Deep thoughts have been given into the play of the light and shadow within the space. The light that enters through the oculus is subtly filtered through the prismatic glass bringing in diffused daylight to brighten up the enthralling interiors of the museum and adds a serene and a divine feel to it.The knowledge center, on the southern side, has been designed as a people engaging environment to facilitate sharing of knowledge and provide a platform for women empowerment and youth development.

Design.

The freestanding structure suitated on the axis along the existing memorial ,16m across each side at its widest point and rises to the height 18m.the structural steel ribs that form the phonenix extended upward,like outspread wings,without a connection between each other to form a pair of canopies.the entrances open onto symmetrical point of the structure.

The project sculptural form is achived through the modulated repetition of structural steel ribs which unify the complex composition and provides digity and beauty to the space enclosed between the ribs glass allows natural light ,a powerfull symbool of hope and vitality to flood the facility.

The exterior form goes fluidly along with the inner spatial arrangements of the museum and the knowledge center. This creates a sense of ease in movement, function, and produces an aesthetical flow and this architecture language goes along with the landscape’s flow and with the whole complex.

Project introduction.

The court house being one of the intresting project to innovative around each space and trying them to gather as a whole.It had three generations of user and different idiology within the house ,I tried to consider every aspect of that and evolved our design with that as a base and have achieved ihavent tried out before on field.

Concept.

The main concept of the court house to get the maxium light and ventitation into the building ,so i created the coutyard with double height space and added pergola on the top .The RCC Roof on the elvation creats a visually pleaseing and enegaes one how viewing from outisde.
