WE ACHIEVE At San Jacinto College, students explore new opportunities, and employees create an innovative, supportive learning environment. Together, we reimagine what’s possible.

MUSIC RECORD-BREAKERS In spring 2023, San Jac’s largest group of students ever — 27 — made Texas Music Educators Association All-State choir and jazz and symphonic band ensembles. This is the highest honor community college music students can achieve. Also, the Central Campus Steel Band performed selections at the state showcase, while Vincente Del Angel was San Jac’s first student ever to win the state concerto competition.

TALENT STRONG TEXAS STAR AWARD San Jac numbered among five Texas institutions that received the state’s Star Award for Building a Talent Strong Texas. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized the College for its industry partnerships that ensure a skilled local workforce and affordable, fast-track options that translate to meaningful credentials and livable income.

TOP 100 COLLEGE FOR HISPANICS Once again, San Jac made Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine’s Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics list. The College ranked …

• Sixth for 2021-2022 total associate degrees granted

• Eighth for 2021-2022 total enrollment four-year schools

In 2020-2021, 24,671 Hispanic/Latino students (59% of all students) enrolled at San Jac. That same year, 2,899 Hispanic/ Latino students earned an associate degree.

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS INAUGURAL HONOREE Communities in Schools of Southeast Harris and Brazoria County honored Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer as its 2023 Inaugural Honoree at the Round up for Kids Gala in March 2023. For more than seven years, San Jac has partnered with Communities in Schools to provide STEM and other programs that inspire K-12 students to dream big.

NAPTA COMPETITION WINS San Jac teams proved their troubleshooting skills in realistic industry scenarios, winning first and second place at the 2023 North American Process Technology Alliance Troubleshooting Skills Competition in April.

Held at the LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology, the competition saw 12 process technology teams from Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma face off to demonstrate hands-on skills in real time.

ASPEN TOP 10 COMMUNITY COLLEGE San Jacinto College earned the nation’s Top 10 community college designation in the 2023 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

SAENZ SEES SOFTBALL SUCCESS San Jac head softball coach Kelly Saenz entered her 20th coaching season with the honor of serving on National Junior College Athletic Association Division I softball and swimming/diving committees, which oversee national rankings, All-America selections, postseason seeding, and more. This February, Saenz also sealed her 700th victory when the Ravens defeated Kilgore College. Finally, her alma mater inducted her into the 2023 Eastern Kentucky University Hall of Fame Class. Under Saenz’s leadership, the softball team has appeared six times at the NJCAA World Series.

PRSA EXCALIBUR AWARDS San Jac’s external relations team won three Public Relations Society of America Houston Chapter 2023 Excalibur Awards:

• Silver for Chancellor’s 2022 digital holiday card • Silver for Promise @ San Jac Scholarship marketing campaign

• Bronze for 2022-2023 softball and baseball media guides MLB DRAFT One current and two former San Jac baseball players were selected in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft. Righthanded pitcher Cale Lansville was selected in the 14th round by the San Francisco Giants, and alumni Sabin Ceballos and Hunter Hollan were picked in the third round by the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, respectively. Also, five San Jac alumni signed as undrafted rookies: Chase Adkison, Cole Turney, J.J. Sanchez, Trey Dillard, and Ryan Hernandez.

SUCCESSFUL RUN FOR ATHLETICS The National Junior College Athletic Association recognized 13 San Jac Ravens softball players and 15 Ravens baseball players for their 2023 achievements with All-South Conference, All-Region, All-American, and All-Academic honors. Softball pitcher Christin Haygood and infielder Arriana Wright were also named Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year respectively for both All-South Conference and AllRegion XIV and recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Softball finished the season with an overall record of 42-19, 18-6 in conference play, and baseball with an overall record of 33-22, 2214 in conference play.

MONUMENT AWARDS Two San Jac employee teams received the College’s highest internal award — the Monument Award — for sustained, exceptional performance beyond the College’s annual priorities and goals. The Fast Track Tuition Discount Program core team provided significant discounts for noncredit and credit programs, which saved more than 1,200 students almost $2 million in tuition, books, and supplies. The dual credit automation project team developed an automated exemptions and contracts payment process that increases productivity and reduces errors by quickly updating dual credit student accounts, which comprise 21% of student accounts.

FROM LAB TO LEGEND South Campus chemistry professor Dr. Jose Nuñez was San Jac’s 2022-2023 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award nominee. Nuñez, who has taught eight years at the College, has 13 years’ experience at the collegiate level. His classes fill quickly thanks to his approachable, humorous, yet challenging teaching style. In 2021, he received the American Chemical Society-Greater Houston Section Two-Year Award for inspiring students.

WE ARE RAVENS With five campuses, San Jacinto College still celebrates a “One College” mindset. This year we unified even more under one mascot — the Raven.

As Ravens, we embrace not only the past and present but the future.

MEET POE San Jac’s five campuses now unite under one mascot: Poe the Raven! The College debuted its new mascot — and his name — during rallies on the South, Central, and North Campuses this April. Historically, San Jac has had separate mascots, with the Ravens at Central Campus, Gators at North, and Coyotes at South.

In fall 2022, more than 1,700 students, employees, and community members submitted ideas for the new mascot, with Jaguar and Raven topping the list. After votes tipped the balance for Raven, students submitted names, and another voting round ended with Poe as the mascot’s name.

The Raven, San Jac’s original mascot, nods to General Sam Houston, leader of the Texas Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, whose Cherokee nickname “Colonneh” translates as “The Raven.”

Under one mascot, campuses celebrate the past while looking forward to opportunities ahead.

TAKE FLIGHT San Jac’s STEM honors students are getting the boost to finish their associate degrees and transfer to top-tier institutions through the new Take Flight STEM Pathway with Rice University. Identified freshmen participate in information sessions, seminars, academic conferences, and more at Rice and may apply for admission there after robust advising and support from both schools’ faculty and staff. This summer, six San Jac students also participated in National Science Foundationfunded Research Experiences for Undergraduates at Rice.

UNLOCKING OPPORTUNITY RESOURCE COLLEGE San Jac is serving as a resource college from 2023-2028 for 10 other colleges nationwide, ensuring community college graduates earn valuable workforce credentials and/or are ready to transfer. Aspen Institute’s “Unlocking Opportunity” network will strengthen the programs and advising available for students nationwide, including students of color and those from low-income backgrounds. San Jac will provide insights while contributing to collective research.

SAN JAC ONLINE To meet the needs of current and future students, the College rolled out San Jac Online with 60 fully online associate degrees and workforce certificates. These online programs allow students, especially those with families and jobs, to fit classes around their busy schedules. While the entire process is available online from registration to graduation, students still have a network of support, including online and on-campus resources.

NEW PROGRAMS FOR CHANGING COMMUNITY Industry is changing, and San Jac has taken note. Beginning fall 2023, the College is rolling out new programs to give students career-ready skills for the Houston and Gulf Coast region. New programs added this fall include …

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Juan Trevizo, a process operator, is pursuing an online computer science degree to transfer, enter the cybersecurity field, and be more available for his family: “Time gets away from you when you’re busy. The kids are growing up, and before you know it, they start to notice their father is always working shift work. I hate missing their milestones. The time has come for me to commit to myself, my children, and my education and learn an invaluable skill that can give me the flexibility to be there for my family with a more constant schedule.”

WE SERVE San Jacinto College students and employees make their mark on the community.

LA PORTE HEALTH AND SAFETY FAIR Central Campus nursing students, and respiratory care and eye care faculty helped with the annual La Porte Health and Safety Fair in September 2022. Students took blood pressure, while respiratory care faculty discussed asthma and used pig lungs to demonstrate healthy lungs vs. a smoker’s lungs. The eye care technology program also shared how to keep eyes healthy.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT San Jac police hosted a National Night Out community event at Central Campus in October.

Health care programs, robotics team, emergency management, and more hosted informative booths. The event included food, child ID kits, face painting, games, music, and a visit from McGruff the crime dog.

GREEN THUMBS, GREENER COMMUNITY San Jac partnered with LyondellBasell in September 2022 to give away more than 2,500 trees through a partnership with Trees for Houston. During the drive-through tree giveaway at the LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology, community members could choose from cypress, apple, redbud, pine, oak, and other varieties, with volunteers loading the trees into their vehicles.

SENIOR WELLNESS EXPO Older adults enjoyed a free Senior Wellness Expo Nov. 11 at the Central Campus, featuring a wall of honor with veterans’ photos, community service provider booths, fitness demos, speakers, health screenings, vaccines, and more. San Jac’s Continuing and Professional Development Community Engagement Division organized the event.

CULTURE FOR COMMUNITY From immersive art exhibits to origami workshops, galleries at the Central, North, and South Campuses offered the community a chance to experience the art and design program, meet guest artists, and learn about different media.

SPECTACULAR STEM The College offered STEM learning experiences galore to local youth in 2022-2023. In November, STEM expos at the North and South Campuses welcomed 750 elementary and junior high students and family members for hands-on science experiments. In February, the STEAM Fair — part science fair, part college orientation — allowed Pasadena ISD intermediate and high school students to showcase their work and explore San Jac programs. In March, the Mind Trekkers Adventures in STEM Festival engaged 5,000 sixth graders from local school districts in hands-on science activities. A family night also welcomed hundreds of local kids and their families to enjoy the same experiments.

TURKEY TROT The Generation Park Campus welcomed students, staff, and the community to its first Turkey Trot in November. Participants walked the entire property, including the sites of future buildings for the master-planned campus.

Afterward, families enjoyed lunch, yard games, face painting, crafting, and line dancing.

WARM FUZZIES Residents at the Park Manor South Belt Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center enjoyed a visit from a different kind of therapy pet — mechanical dogs and cats. South Campus Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter members rounded up 14 mechanical pets for their annual Honors in Action project, themed “The Art and Science of Play.” Students plan to take the therapy pets to visit pediatric and veteran patients too.

ARTISTS FOR HOPE In February, the San Jac dance program hosted the eighth annual Artists for charity concert event. The two-day event included six master classes and two evening concerts with local dance companies and raised more than $3,400 for the Pearland Neighborhood Center, which helps local families in need.

CALLING ALL ENTREPRENEURS For future or current entrepreneurs, the new Center for Entrepreneurship at the Generation Park Campus provides free non-credit workshops and events to help build small businesses. Topics range from developing, financing, and marketing a business to problem solving and navigating conflict. From late fall to early spring, the resourcebased center hosted seven evening workshops for its Small Business Workshop Academy.

EMPTY BOWLS, FULL STOMACHS The Central Campus invited students, staff, and the public to get creative to tackle hunger with a pottery bowl-a-thon in February. San Jac provided the supplies, and students and families put their creativity to the test with mounds of clay. The College sent 85 glazed and fired bowls to Empty Bowls Houston for sale, benefitting the Houston Food Bank.

CHALLENGER GAME The Ravens baseball team partnered with the North Shore Little League Challenger Division for the third annual Challenger Day in April. This local Challenger Division allows boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 4-18, to enjoy baseball. The Ravens players acted as buddies during the game, helping the Challenger players on the field whenever needed.

SEE TO SUCCEED For the 11th year, San Jac eye care technology program students helped provide free eye screenings, exams, and glasses fittings for Pasadena ISD students. Held in February at the Pasadena Convention Center, See to Succeed celebrated its 100,000th student in 2023. More than 1,400 Pasadena ISD students participated, with 97% receiving glasses.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Sebastian Solis (’23) participated in See to Succeed as a child with vision issues. He participated a second time as a San Jac eye care technology program student in spring 2023: “It was a blessing for me to return that favor for the community….

Sight helps us experience the world. Providing the necessary screening to help save someone’s sight is my No. 1 drive.”

YOU CREATE OPPORTUNITIES Community partners like you create opportunities by giving your time and resources, helping students thrive in the classroom and beyond.

PROMISE @ SAN JAC SCHOLARSHIP EXPANSION In 2022, San Jac expanded the Promise @ San Jac Scholarship, offering a debt-free certificate or degree to all in-district high school seniors. The College established the scholarship endowment thanks to a $30 million donation from MacKenzie Scott and generous community members who have become Promise Partners.

SERVICE WIRE RIBBON CUTTINGS Service Wire Company sponsored spaces inside the North Campus Center for Industrial Technology and the Generation Park Campus, partnering with the College for student success.

TWC AEROSPACE TRAINING GRANT The Texas Workforce Commission presented a $332,000 grant for aerospace technician training.

Together, San Jac, BayTech, and Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership will train job seekers as certified aerospace electrical, composite, or structural technicians. The partnership will provide a pipeline of trained technicians to Houston’s growing aerospace manufacturing industries and companies.

FOUNDATION DONORS GIVE $3.5M TO STUDENTS From July 2022 through April 2023, donors gave almost $3.5 million in cash and pledges to help students. During this time, the San Jacinto College Foundation awarded $2.7 million in scholarships and provided emergency assistance with meals, tuition, and books.

GIVING TUESDAY Ninety generous donors gave more than $18,600 to students through the San Jacinto College Foundation on Giving Tuesday 2022. Because of their generosity, more San Jac students can finish their degrees and certificates without financial stress.

$1M NURSING SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT STARTED WITH ‘I DO’ One of the largest private donations in San Jac’s history — $1 million — created the Katha and Clifton Black Nursing Scholarship Endowment, which began awarding scholarships in fall 2022 to Bachelor of Science in Nursing students. The late Burl Clifton “B.C.” Black Jr. created the endowment in memory of his beloved wife, Katha, a former nurse.

TUITION-FREE PRESCHOOL Partnering with Bezos Academy, San Jac opened a tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschool on the North Campus to serve the North Shore area community.

Bezos Academy covers operating expenses for the preschool at no cost to eligible families, providing everything the children need during the day, including meals and educational materials. The ribbon cutting took place Aug. 21.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Catherine Green (’24, A.S. degree in business) put off college while raising her two children. Two decades later, she is fulfilling her personal promise to pursue a degree. A San Jacinto College Foundation scholarship has helped her persevere through challenges: “After San Jac, I plan to earn a bachelor’s degree in business entrepreneurship. I want to work as a consultant, helping other small business owners, and establish a nonprofit for homeless teens to give them the resources they lack. Thank you for giving to San Jac students. I am overwhelmed with gratitude!”
