RIGOLETTO

GIUSEPPE V ERDI

The desires of a lecherous duke clash with the protective paternal instincts of his court jester in this tragic tale of obsession, devotion and vengeance. Music director Nicola Luisotti leads the season opener, in which soaring melody and a roster of Verdi’s most-loved arias are set in a vibrant San Francisco Opera production.

SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRODUCTION

Two outstanding casts are led by baritone Željko Lucic, whose “superb performance” as Rigoletto at the Paris National Opera (2012) secures his place as “one of today’s pre-eminent Verdi baritones” (Financial Times), and the “arrestingly dark and charismatic” (San Francisco Chronicle) Marco Vratogna, who thrilled San Francisco Opera audiences with his sinister Iago in Otello (2009).

HEGGIE · Libretto by GENE SCHEER BEN HEPPNER

A masterpiece of American literature is transformed into a “powerful and emotionally irresistible” (San Francisco Chronicle) opera by Dead Man Walking composer Jake Heggie. Ben Heppner’s Captain Ahab, who risks the lives of his shipmates to pursue an obsessive quest, “is every bit as tragic as Lohengrin, Tristan, or Otello” (Associated Press). Sharing the role is Jay Hunter Morris, whose “astonishing vocal command” as Captain Ahab in San Diego (2012) was “nothing less than miraculous” (Kenneth Herman, SanDiego.com). ANGELA GHEORGHIU

TOSCA

GIACOMO PUCCINI

Puccini’s masterful melodrama is a sexually charged, edge-of-your-seat thriller in which a great singer, a rebellious painter and a corrupt police chief engage in a deadly test of wills. Music director Nicola Luisotti, “one of his generation’s most accomplished Puccini conductors” (Opera News), leads two magnificent casts.

SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRODUCTION

One stars Angela Gheorghiu, who inspired a Times (London) critic to write: “I don’t think I have heard Tosca’s love music more beautifully sung in the theater.” Massimo Giordano, “a tenor with a true Italianate sound” (Opera News), and Roberto Frontali, who brought “dramatic intensity” (San Francisco Chronicle) to the role of Sherriff Jack Rance in The Girl of the Golden West (2010), complete the fatal love triangle.

Frontali

Giordano

Gheorghiu

The next cast stars Patricia Racette, “a versatile, dramatically astute performer with a proven knack for Puccini” (The New York Times), with Adler Fellow Brian Jagde in his role debut as Cavaradossi and Mark Delavan (Wotan in the Ring cycle, 2011) as a “menacing yet elegantly mannered” (The New York Times) Scarpia.

Two superstar sopranos and one fiery, impetuous diva: Puccini’s definitive tale of passion, corruption and betrayal.

Acclaimed tenor Matthew Polenzani “scored a triumph as Hoffmann’s titular, tortured poet” with his performance at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (2011), “offering an intelligently conceived, internally focused characterization in support of his brilliant singing” (Opera News). WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZ ART Trickery flirts with tragedy in Mozart’s emotionally nuanced tale of romantic temptation, in which four young lovers learn more about each other—and themselves—than they bargained for. Music director Nicola Luisotti conducts a dynamic young cast that includes Ellie Dehn, “a charismatic soprano with great stage presence” (Wall Street Journal) and Heidi Stober, who possesses a “rare vivacity of voice and personality” (Houston Chronicle). The production, which sets the action in Monte Carlo during World War I, “illuminates” this Mozart favorite, “skillfully balancing the demands of comedy and seriousness” (San Francisco Chronicle).
