The sea-princess Rusalka wants nothing more than to live on land with the Prince. To attain her wish, she agrees to a fateful spell cast by a sea-witch. In Dvorˇ ák’s hands, the timeless fairy tale of a mermaid, who trades her voice for love, is rendered in a powerful, otherworldly fable—a drama of shadowy depths, fervent love songs and endings that may not be what they seem. Rachel Willis-Sørensen makes her role debut as Rusalka alongside Brandon Jovanovich, Jamie Barton and Ferruccio Furlanetto in Sir David McVicar’s spectacular production. As he struggles to trust his own perceptions and move toward a clearer world, his trauma ricochets on the people around him—putting love and honor to the test. Set in London during WWII, this updated production of Handel’s insightful opera brings a poignant perspective to a veteran who overcomes the lasting effects of war with the help of friends. The magnetic Sasha Cooke and David Daniels make their highly anticipated returns along with Heidi Stober and Christian Van Horn.
