TIME TO CELEBRATE The First Nations Rounds over the past fortnight have been a wonderful celebration – and they have featured some brilliant footy and impressive celebrations.

Rounds 7 and 8 have recognised SANFL and SANFLW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players past and present who have made, and continue to make, a significant contribution to our great game. The 10 clubs revealed stunning guernsey designs telling unique stories, while Adelaide was known as Kuwarna – the Kaurna translation for the word Crows – and Port Adelaide as Yartapuulti – the Kaurna translation for ‘Yarta’ meaning place or land and ‘Puulti’ which means sleep or death, the name Kaurna people gave the land around Port River.

There have been moving Welcome to Country ceremonies and the Indigenous players, men and women, of North and South linked together at Prospect Oval. And the goal celebrations of West’s Luke Redfern and North’s Lachie Grubb showed off their outstanding guernseys.

SOUTH V ADELAIDE The Panthers will recall all too well this was one they let slip in the season opener at Noarlunga. They were off to a flyer as they booted the first four goals and they led by 33 points late in the second quarter.

Even after the Crows took the lead for the first time at the 24-minutemark of the last quarter, they had a couple of shots at goal in a heartwrenching five-point loss. South will be focusing on another fast start because that’s what was missing last week against North. This time the Panthers trailed by 33 points at the first break before being ultracompetitive for the next three quarters in a 38-point loss. A good 4

start and a good finish was what South had when it won all four quarters en route to a 73-point success against Port in Round 7. It’s not always easy to find that consistency in a young line-up but the Panthers are taking steps in the right direction. Like the Panthers, the Crows are looking to the future with an inexperienced line-up that has a different demographic to the squad that made preliminary finals in the past two years. Adelaide’s only win since the opening round against South came in Round 5 by 41 points against Port but since then it pushed top side Norwood in a three-goal loss and was within eight points of West late in the final quarter of a

The Bulldogs downed the Eagles by 15 points when these huge rivals of the noughties met at Elizabeth in Round 4, so they will be expecting a torrid welcome from a club fresh from ending the top side’s unbeaten run. The Eagles stormed to within a win of ladder-leading Norwood with a super impressive 39-point win at The Parade, while Central slipped to fifth with defeat at the hands of Glenelg. But the Bulldogs lost no fans as they pushed the reigning premier hard all day, culminating in their having the final four shots at goal in the last seven minutes of a seven-point loss, all four shots missing. The Dogs edged the Tigers 48-47 in inside-50s to show they could easily have snatched the win in a positive performance after disappointing losses to Sturt and Norwood, with Jake Gasper a livewire around the goals with 4.4. The Eagles will know they will have their hands full here, their win against the Legs consigned to history. But there’s no way they won’t have gained plenty of confidence and further belief from their win. We at the Football Budget love plenty of passion in great goal celebrations. We are celebrating West’s Luke Redfern and North’s Lachie Grubb on Page 3 and injured Tiger Lachie Hosie on Page 6. When it comes to heart-onyour-sleeve passion in a celebration it’s hard to top the Eagles’ James Rowe. And how his team-mates, who he constantly lifts and inspires, loved it when he booted a late goal against Norwood. How can you keep a bloke like that down? It’s one for the Dogs to ponder.

GLENELG V NORTH Glenelg put on a right royal celebration last season when 7285 fans packed into the Bay to see the Tigers thump Sturt on the King’s Birthday holiday Monday. This year the club is ramping up for a similar bumper crowd against North, a huge grand final rival of the 1970s and ’80s. There’s nothing Roosters fans would love more than being party poopers at Glenelg and North’s strong win against South last week that put it just a win behind fifth-placed Central showed it is back on the right track. The Tigers have lost superstar forward Lachie Hosie to a serious knee injury and will have to watch out for a goalkicking dangerman at the other end, Mitch Harvey, who is SANFL’s leading goalkicker with 19 and is also the best contested mark going around. But the Bays will know he’s not the only worry around the goals. Spectacular Nigel Lockyer has booted 17 goals and

livewire Tariek Newchurch bagged four against the Panthers. But the Bays were rightly pleased to have overcome a dogged Central after being deflated by the Hosie news, a couple of largely unsung backmen from last year’s premiership triumph, Alex Martini, revelling in time on the ball, and Jonty Scharenberg leading the way. Just who will reign supreme here?

STURT V NORWOOD While it will be a bumper day at the Bay, there will be plenty to cheer about at Unley, with an inaugural ‘Kick n Sip Festival’ outside the oval bringing eats, beats and footy fun.

There will be food trucks, wine and gin bars, live music, entertainment and activities for all ages – but, mostly, a blockbuster clash between 124-year rivals. The Redlegs kickstarted their premiership assault with an impressive 27-point win against Sturt under lights at The Parade.

But superstar midfielder Tom Lewis hobbling off in the second quarter was a big blow for the Blues. This time Norwood has been battling key injuries to Billy Cootee (hamstring) and Mitch O’Neill (ankle), while premiership superstar Matt Panos has been sidelined with a knee issue. Cootee has been averaging 22 disposals and seven tackles, while O’Neill racks up 26 disposals and six tackles. And now star defender Matt Ling has been suspended for three games. The Legs will be looking for a way to stop Will Snelling, who is having a remarkable first season at Sturt.

His 241 disposals in eight games is 32 more than the SANFL’s nexthighest (North’s Harrison Wigg), his 86 tackles are 12 more than West’s Kobe Ryan to lead the league, his 126 handballs are 10 more than Rooster Campbell Combe and his ranking points lead the way on 1104 – 164 more than Ryan. He’s worth a King’s ransom the way he’s going.

TRIPLE THREAT

Everyone loves a great goal celebration and Glenelg superstar Lachie Hosie loves celebrating a goal. We’re looking forward to more of these when he recovers from his knee injury.

When Tiger Luke Reynolds winds up for a long shot at goal on his lethal left foot, get ready to mark the goal down in your Football Budget.

Had Glenelg’s lethal left-footer Luke Reynolds somehow summoned four more goals in an already bumper 2023 campaign, the Tigers would have enjoyed a rare 1-2-3 finish at the top of the SANFL goalkicking list.

Superstar team-mate Lachlan Hosie led the SANFL with 61 goals for the season, winning the Ken Farmer Medal along the way before snaring the Jack Oatey Medal on grand final day, while triple Farmer Medallist Liam McBean (46 goals) was runner-up.

Reynolds’ exceptional season reaped 42 goals but an all-Glenelg podium was broken up by Sturt’s ‘bronze medallist’ Josh Hone (45).

The Hosie-McBean-Reynolds trinity, which has taken a big hit with a serious knee injury suffered by Hosie, has been deadly over the past half-dozen years.

In 2019, when the Tigers also won the flag, that same threesome was on track to hog the podium before Hosie was picked up by North Melbourne in the mid-season draft while heading the Ken Farmer Medal race. In second and third spots were eventual Farmer Medallist McBean and Reynolds, who ended up tied with McBean as SANFL’s leading goalkickers for the season with 53.

Although Wikipedia has tried to combine the two, SANFL’s leading goalkicker and Ken Farmer Medallist are

not the same thing (for example, in 2017 Port’s Brett Eddy won the Ken Farmer Medal – with 53 goals in the minor round – but Sturt’s Kory Beard was SANFL’s leading goalkicker, with 62 including finals).

There have been numerous dangerous, iconic goalkicking trios throughout the league’s history. In its revered 1973 premiership, Glenelg had an unprecedented three players – Peter Carey (70), Rex Voigt (68) and Fred Phillis (61) – top the 60-goal mark and, incredibly, another two – John Sandland (53) and Greg Wickens (51) – pass the half-ton.

Tiger trio Kym Hodgeman, Stephen Copping and Phillis all cracked the 50-goal milestone in 1978, as did Copping (83), Stephen Kernahan (81) and Tony McGuinness (58) in 1985.

Tony Hall (73), Copping (63) and John Seebohm (54) were the leading goalkicking lights in the 1986 second leg of the Bays’ famous back-to-back flags, while John Fidge (91), Mark Russell (72) and Clayton Lamb (55) were similarly impactful in ‘92.

When the Redlegs took out the 1975 premiership nine years earlier, Ross Dillon (78), Roger Woodcock (56) and Greg Turbill (45) all had Football Budget readers furiously updating the goal columns. Four decades before that, in 1935, Bruce Schultz (66), Tom Warhurst Sr (59) and Ron Brown (51) couldn’t be contained in Norwood’s attack.

Ken Farmer, the sport’s greatest goalkicker who accumulated a never-to-be-beaten 1417 majors in 224 league games from 1929-41, left little in the way of scraps for his North Adelaide team-mates. Farmer was a one-man show in attack, registering 11 successive 100-goal seasons. In four of those years he finished, extraordinarily, more than 100 goals clear of North’s second-highest scorer.

The Roosters’ finest triumvirate came in 1973 when Dennis Sachse (105), Barry Hearl (50) and Rodney Robran (49) almost helped Mike Patterson’s side pull off a premiership three-peat.

When North won the 1987 flag, John Roberts (111) was supported by Craig Burton (51) and Darel Hart (40), while later, in 2006, Nick Gill (47), Chris Ladhams (46) and Heath Younie (46) spearheaded the high-scoring Roosters, then coached by ‘87 premiership hero Andrew Jarman. In 1989 Sean Tasker (53), Peter Bennett (52), Darren Jarman (43) and Doug Smart (43) formed a fearsome foursome for runner-up North.

Six-time league leading goalkicker Tim Evans and triple Ken Farmer Medallist Scott Hodges dominated Port Adelaide’s goalkicking in some of the Magpies’ greatest years – but they always seemed to find some help.

was aided by cameos from Rohan Smith (48) and teenage sensation Gavin Wanganeen (46).

Evans bagged 149 in Port’s 1980 pennant, bolstered by Ross Agius (60) and Milan Faletic (47), before the champion full forward added another 137 in ‘84, this time backed by Steven Knight (56) and Dwayne Russell (48), with Russell Ebert (42), then captain-coach, ranking fourth. Randall Gerlach (96), Darrell Cahill (62) and Brian Cunningham (54) were a lethal combination for the grand final-bound Magpies in 1976.

While Adelaide’s relatively brief SANFL existence hasn’t produced a trio of heavy scorers, the Crows have had their share in the AFL, most notably Eddie Betts, Taylor Walker and Josh Jenkins, who each booted 45-plus for three straight years from 2015-17.

Legendary Central District rover John Platten burst onto the scene to form a potent 50-plus troika with Greg Edwards and Michael Wright in 1981-82 before the mop-topped champion kicked a career-best 67 majors in ‘84 to combine beautifully with Wilbur Wilson (73) and Robert Fraser (54).

In 1988 Rudi Mandemaker (83), Derek Kickett (48) and Steven Lally (48) offered three regular goal avenues for the Bulldogs. That season Central chalked up a clubrecord 35.23 (233) in a 198-point demolition of West Torrens at Elizabeth, with Mandemaker, Kickett, Robert Handley and Gavin Chaplin bagging seven six-pointers each.

Sam McArdle (65), Danny Stevens (42) and Stuart Dew (37) set the scoreboard alight in 2000 to kickstart the Dogs’ decade of domination, before the Gowans twins – Chris (41) and James (40) – and Luke Cowan (36) fronted the charge in 2003.

Woodville-West Torrens fell at the final hurdle in 201516 despite boasting a plethora of attacking options, with triple Ken Farmer Medallist Michael Wundke, Andrew Ainger and Lachlan McGregor featuring high in the league’s goalscoring leaderboard both seasons.

South Adelaide’s 2006 resurgence owed plenty to the goalkicking prowess of Ben Warren (64), Damian Cupido (55) and Alwyn Davey Sr (42). Crows-listed Panthers Randall Bone (49), Chris Groom (41) and Peter McIntyre (40) all threatened the half-century in 1992, while Ron Hateley (69), Wayne Slattery (51) and John Schneebichler (47) in ‘84 formed South’s top triumvirate.

Sturt’s best trifectas came during its halcyon years, led by Malcolm Greenslade, Malcolm ‘Emmy’ Jones and Bob Shearman in 1967, and Greensland, Ken Whelan and Mike Nunan in ‘76.

West Adelaide’s drought-breaking 2015 pennant was propelled by its surplus of inside-50 threats, piloted by Shannon Green (46), Aaron Fielke (41) and Jono Beech (35).

No list of goalkicking trios would be complete without mentioning Neil Kerley’s 1983 Bloods who possessed, arguably, the most scintillating, multi-pronged attacking mix the SANFL has seen. Kerley had at his rich disposal a ravenous wolf pack of goalscorers, led by high-flying full forward Roger Luders (109), prodigious superboot centre half-forward Bruce Lindner (77), halfforwards Mike Smith (56) and Geoff Morris (49) and rovers Leon Grosser (48) and Bernie Conlen (48). sanfl.com.au

MAHER MAKES MARK

BY PETER ARGENT Tesharna Maher, one of SANFLW’s quickest footballers, is already a six-year veteran of the competition, despite being just 22.

Maher is in her fourth year at The Parade, after switching from Woodville-West Torrens in 2021, having debuted for the Eagles against West in Round 2 2019 in a Friday night game at Richmond, where she impressed with 15 disposals. Maher, who won Norwood’s best-and-fairest award in 2022 and this year played a strong role in SA’s historic win against the WAFLW in May. “It was pretty exciting – an unreal experience. The opportunity to wear the State jumper again was special,” said Maher who wore SA’s jumper previously at under-15 schoolgirls level and in under-18 games against the Northern Territory, along with playing for the Central Allies in 2018 and ’19 at the nationals, alongside Bella Smith, Abbie Ballard, Madison Newman and Hannah Munyard.

“I have to admit I was pretty nervous going into the match but I was happy with my game and kicking two goals. We were lucky to hold on for victory. It was a highlight to play on Optus Stadium – it had that wow factor and was so different to Adelaide Oval. It was like you were in a huge colosseum.”

Maher, who missed the first round of the First Nations celebration against Central due to illness but was delighted to be back for last week’s fixture against the Eagles, was involved in designing the Norwood Indigenous jumper.

Tesharna is a Western Aranda, Yankunytjatjara Pitjantjatjara, Yamaitji, on her father Kelvin Maher’s side, along with Kokatha and Gurrinji, on Bronwyn Davey, her mother’s, side.

involved,” Maher said. “I contributed to the design along with my auntie, artist Marisa Maher. My totem dreaming is the willie wagtail. When I was young I showed significant resemblance to the willie wagtail, its movements and traits. Showing these traits shows how powerful my culture is.”

Having passed her 50-game milestone last year, Maher has two priorities – to grab a prized premiership medallion and to become a 100-game SANFLW player.

She has strong football heritage on both sides of her clan. Dad, Kelvin Maher, played league footy at Glenelg, while mum, Bron Davey, was a pioneer who played in the inaugural AFL match between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne in 2013 at the MCG. Remarkably, mother and daughter even played a couple of matches together at the end of the ’19 campaign for the Eagles. Tesharna’s uncles Alwyn – Froggy to his mates – and Aaron had short stints in the SANFL before

having strong AFL careers.

“My greatest football mentors have been my parents,” Maher said.

“I was a soccer player originally and mum introduced me to footy.

I certainly get my pace from dad.

Although my pace is an attribute, I never did any athletics, except the usual school carnivals.”

Away from her commitments at Norwood, Tesharna is working at the Stars Foundation in a program that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and young women making active choices and realising their full potential in all aspects of their development and wellbeing.

“I started with the Stars Foundation a couple of months back,” she said.

“I’m based at the Para Hills High School Academy – we now have four across Adelaide.” She has made her mark with Norwood’s stunning Indigenous guernsey but her offfield work in mentoring First Nations girls in life and sport looms as even more important. sanfl.com.au

People still approach Kym Dillon to tell him they saw him kick the winning goal against Glenelg in 1985.

“You’d swear there were 100,000 people who said they were there that day and saw that,” Dillon laughed.

The reality is there were 6626 but it sounded like the MCG on grand final day when Dillon’s expertly executed checkside punt curved around the left goalpost at the northern end of Thebarton Oval to sink the visitors by a single point.

The reality is, Dillon shouldn’t have even been playing, defying medicos and delighting his coach to stretch the limits of his body beyond its intended capacity.

“I had splits in the top of my tibia and the base of my femur,” Dillon revealed. “Greg Keene the surgeon said, ‘you’re trying to run around with a broken leg’. I’d actually retired and then I came back.

around the group I’d try to play.

“I wasn’t even training at that stage.

I’d get my knee drained on a Sunday because it would be full of fluid.

Then I’d swim Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, have a kick Thursday and then go through the same routine. That game was the secondlast game I ever played.”

The Round 12 fixture was a clash between fourth (Glenelg) and fifth with both sides 6-5. “It was a really tight game, it was goal for goal,” Dillon recalled. The Eagles led by six points at quarter-time, trailed by nine at the half and took an eight-point lead into the final break. But the pendulum swung back Glenelg’s way in the final term and Dillon was almost the villain of his team’s defeat.

With 20 minutes of the last quarter expired and Torrens trailing by three points, Dillon took off to intercept a mark intended for Stephen Kernahan. “I ran to the boundary and there was a (Torrens)

player just in front of me and he got there just a split-second before me, so I stopped and Kernahan ran into the back of me and they (umpire Geoff Bowles) said it was shepherding or blocking. Well it was within five metres anyway, so what was I supposed to do, compete against my own teammate for the mark?”

Dillon threw his mouthguard at Bowles’ feet in disgust, costing his side a 15m penalty and ultimately a goal that took Glenelg nine points clear. “It’s the only time I ever threw my mouthguard. I can remember Daryl Hicks’ commentary of that because he said I was ‘petulant’ and I didn’t know what the word meant!”

But Torrens recovered the goal and as fate would have it, Dillon was again in the thick of it. “I took possession in the left forward pocket, northern end, about five metres away from the point post.

knocked out before I even really had possession but he didn’t let me go.”

It was Bowles who paid a free kick for holding the man, according to Dillon and Michelangelo Rucci in his report in The Advertiser. “I bumped into Walsh a few times after that.

He used to have the cleaning contract at Austereo when I was at Triple M and he’d say to me: ‘It wasn’t a free kick’.”

Not surprisingly, Walsh’s recollection of the incident is quite different, most notably his memory of exactly why the free kick was paid. “Good old ‘Diver’ Dillon,” Walsh laughed. “He wasn’t actually my direct opponent. The ball had gone over the back and who was sucking out the back for an easy one? Old Kymmy. ‘Snout’ MacFarlane, who may have or may not have been his direct opponent, was after him with me. He’s fumbling the thing all the way into the pocket to the point we’ve both caught up with him.

“Snout was directly behind him and I was just off to the side, both with our hands up, and he got to the boundary line and he’s just done the biggest ‘Swan Lake’ onto the ball, arms out, and next thing the whistle’s gone for ‘in the back’. Now Snout’s done the clever thing and just walked straight off and left me holding the baby. I’m telling you and

(Kym) readily admits this, neither of us touched him. I’ve looked at the angle (at the goals) at Thebarton Oval and you could have driven a bus through it. If you were a rightfooter, you could have just about kicked a drop punt. So I’ve thought, he’s gonna kick this and he’s gonna love it because he’s gonna cover himself in glory.”

The hopes of the home fans were riding on the prodigious talents of the left-footed Dillon, jammed in Thebarton Oval’s left forward pocket. “That old saying about every boy’s dream to kick the winning goal, I just reckon the footy gods thought, ‘well, he’s had a rough trot, we might give him his farewell present’. I remember Jeff Sarau yelling at me to pass it to him but he was that bloody slow and he led from about 15 metres away. I thought, ‘just breathe, this is our only chance’. I know I thought I’d kick it. It was a genuine checkside, it had to bend a hell of a lot and it went through.”

But the game was still not won. “I ran back to the centre with a bit of adrenaline and my arms out telling everyone, ‘it’s not over, get back, get back (behind the ball)’. I know Glenelg went into attack one more time after I kicked the winning goal and Tom Hank took a mark in the back pocket (to save the game).

The siren went a couple of seconds after that.”

Rucci reported the win proved “Torrens can now handle pressure”, describing Dillon as “Thebarton’s new mayor”. He also observed Dillon had saluted Bowles for “granting him the right to steal the game”, an act which completely escape’s Dillon’s memory. But he does remember club president Lindsay Head being one of the first to congratulate him straight after the game. “It was a great day and it was a huge night. We were all starting to believe we could play finals.”

The win, with speedy, skilful wingman Steven Stretch rated best-afield, lifted Torrens to third but finals were not to be. The Eagles won just one more game for the season, plummeting to ninth.

Dillon didn’t front the following week because of his knee. He played only one more league match, three weeks later, in a 116point loss to Woodville.

The Bays were beaten only twice more that season before ending a 12-year premiership drought. But Walsh, who counts himself fortunate to have played in the era, injured a medial ligament at training just before finals and missed the premiership. He ruptured his ACL the following season and was sidelined for the 1986 flag as well. sanfl.com.au

Yeah, you really got me now, You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’, now – The Kinks Like the Kinks, I was in a state of confusion about footy by the mid to late sixties. South Adelaide was on the wane and a new force was on the rise – the mighty Double Blues.

Sturt’s legendary coach, Jack Oatey, had put together a formidable unit that would win five premierships on the trot, consistently beating the mob that had won too many – Port.

As a football-obsessed kid, I had to know more about Adonis-like characters with marvellous monikers such as ‘Diamond Jim’ Tilbrook. Also in the team, a few quietly-spoken trainee clergymen who certainly didn’t turn the other cheek on the footy field. Sturt was changing our Australian game forever with a radical handballing style and the checkside goalkicking wizardry of diminutive geniuses like Peter Endersbee. Some of this stuff you had to see to believe. Television arriving in the sixties meant more of us could actually see it each weekend, as former camera operator and director, John Cronshaw, recalled: “We had three cameras on the football in those days. One was a wide-shot camera.

The second camera was to pick up the close-ups of marks and ground play and the third was used on the scoreboard because we didn’t have graphics generators then.”

John also worked on the Sunday footy shows where many of the players who came into the studio were revered like gods – but the remuneration was nothing like it is today: “There wasn’t much money to be made in football. A guy would come into the studio and he’d win a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken (laughs) as the player of the day.”

Eldon was Nine’s sports editor and he remembered ‘kidnapping’ the great Barrie Robran for an interview after his second Medal win: “We got him away from Channel Seven. Seven had the TV rights from memory. I managed to get Barrie to come with me. Barrie was so shy back in those days and he knew me very well. Seven were very upset about it.”

For the Kandelaars boys, this TV caper was a real winner. We could watch the reserves in the morning and by Saturday night, the Big Replay was ready to roll as John Cronshaw, recalled: “In the early days we would show the reserves live but the replay of the league game would be transmitted from the suburban ground – bounced from Mount Lofty to the station – and recorded on two-inch tape.

Segments containing the best bits of the game would be shown in a 48-minute package in the evening.

I remember one State game from Adelaide Oval between SA and Victoria. We had a DC3 plane circling near Mount Gambier

bouncing pictures from Adelaide to Melbourne. Back then, all this TV coverage was pioneering stuff. It was all pretty exciting because it was all new.”

As the Kandelaars brothers sat glued to the telly on Saturday nights, I couldn’t get enough of the great Barrie Robran, who would glide across Prospect Oval, weaving his magic and confounding his opponents. You can now see ‘Bazz’ in colour thanks to the relentless push over the years to enhance footy coverage with better technology. Electronics company, Marconi, loaned cameras to Channel Nine in 1972 as the station prepared for colour and they captured that year’s grand final in the most vivid way. It never went to air but former cameraman and director Rob Fletcher preserved the tapes. He also remembered the battle for footy coverage rights: “Nine had the sole rights in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Then colour came in and three stations, Nine, Seven and the ABC, did it. After that, it went to Channel Seven. And then it went back to Nine in 1980 and 1981.” sanfl.com.au

BY ZACBYMILBANK Woodville-West Torrens forward Tyler Welsh made his presence felt with a damaging eight-goal haul propelling his team to an 85-point win against Norwood at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

Making his first SANFL Under-18 appearance of the season, Welsh hauled in 10 marks to go with his 17 disposals as his Eagles led at every change in a percentageboosting victory. The Crows’ father-son prospect’s team-mates Oskar Kilpatrick (20 disposals), Jevan Phillipou (29 disposals, two goals) and Zac Schwarz (23 disposals, four goals) also dominated. On a tough day at the office, Norwood had Harry Brock (24 disposals), Darcy Speyer and Riley Kirchhofer battle hard against the tide.

Ladder-leading Glenelg made light work of Central District as it cruised to a 55-point win in a topof-the-table clash at X Convenience Oval.

Despite conceding the first two goals to Bulldog father-son Dougie Cochrane, the Bays put down the accelerator as they piled on 16 of the next 22 goals to cement themselves as competition

pacesetters. Kallan Bevan found plenty of the Sherrin with 30 disposals, seven marks and five clearances while team-mates Jack Wisneske (21 disposals) and Kobe Gibson (27 disposals, 13 marks) were also influential. Key forward Aidan Schubert (20 disposals, eight marks) was rated the Bulldogs’ best performer, while Brodie Wills and Mitch McDonald also worked hard.

South Adelaide kept its top-four hopes alive with a 72-point triumph against North Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium.

Chalking up their third win of the season, the Panthers needed to keep the fourth-placed Roosters (six wins) in check nearing the halfway point of the campaign. Star South midfielder Phoenix Hargrave was everywhere as he racked up 27 disposals, 13 marks and four goals while SA Under-18 captain Sid Draper continued to build nicely in his return from injury, collecting 31 disposals. North’s Hunter Press did his best to arrest South’s momentum with his 19 disposals and 10 marks, with Charlie Dickeson (18 disposals) and Tom Stevens also providing resistance.

A strong second-half showing allowed Sturt to solidify its place in the top four with a 29-point win against West Adelaide at Thomas Farms Oval.

Leading by just five points at halftime, the Double Blues slammed on 8.3 to the Bloods’ 4.3 to bank their seventh win of the season. Sturt’s Felix Katsaros had a significant impact with 28 possessions and six marks, while team-mates Jacob Moiler, Kobee Dabinett and Eli Nightingale (two goals) also played their roles well.
