WE WILL REMEMBER The tradition continues as Glenelg and Sturt play on Anzac Day at the Bay in a highly-anticipated grand final re-match.

A league game on Anzac Day was held for the first time in 1948, when the previous season’s top two sides West Adelaide and Norwood started something that has since become as South Australian as pie floaters and Fruchocs. The Glenelg-Sturt clash will be the 58th time the previous year’s SANFL grand finalists have been honoured to play on Anzac Day. The AFL has a much more recent Anzac Day tradition of Collingwood v Essendon games – today will mark their 29th clash – while SANFL’s system gives every club the chance to earn the right to be part of the nation’s most special day.

The Bays and the Blues will face off for their fourth Anzac Day grand final re-match, the Blues having won in 1970 (by 28 points) and ’71 (15) and the Tigers in 1975 (by 16 points). Of the 57 Anzac Day grand final re-matches, the reigning premier has won 30, lost 26, with one draw.

Last season the beaten grand finalist scored a win with North Adelaide, pipped by one point by Norwood in the 2022 grand final, winning convincingly by 54 points at The Parade. These clubs wonderfully acknowledged the contribution and sacrifice of those who have served and died in wars and peacekeeping operations in moving ceremonies and tributes before the game.

Colin Churchett, a Navy veteran of World War II, was one of many ex-servicemen who loved being involved on Anzac Day in emotional pre-game motorcades. The remarkable war-time story of the Glenelg great, who died in 2012 aged 86, is featured on Pages 6-7.

In a rapidly-changing world some long-held traditions have been lost but Anzac Day continues to hold a special place in the hearts of South Australians – and our footy fans embrace it in a meaningful way.

The SANFL’s annual Anzac Day clash honours the previous year’s grand final teams, the game’s proud participants rating it the biggest game of the minor round. And the players, officials and fans honour some of our country’s bravest.

On 25 April 1915, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli as part of a defensive action in World War I. The soldiers in those forces became known as Anzacs and their remarkable bravery in the face of impossible odds at Gallipoli helped foster a developing sense of national identity.

The eight-month campaign cost the lives of 8000 Aussie soldiers and 2700 Kiwis. Anzac Day is a time to remember Australians and New Zealanders who sacrificed their lives in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions around the world. It is also a time to remember and thank all those who have served and continue to serve in the Australian and New Zealand armies.

SA footy first honoured the Anzacs in 1920, with service teams competing a week before the SANFL season kicked off. The Advertiser noted a carnival arranged by the Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Imperial League was held on Adelaide Oval, “where a crowd of many thousands witnessed two well-contested matches”. The Light Horse team beat the 50th Battalion by 23 points, before the 27th Battalion claimed an 11-point win over the 10th Battalion.

Games featuring service teams were regularly played as a prelude to the league season in the 1920s but during the depression years of the 1930s, these Anzac Day games became less regular. 1947 to tackle an Army team led by West Adelaide premiership coach Gordon Scott.

A year later a league match would be held for the first time on Anzac Day, between the previous season’s grand finalists, West and Norwood.

West had come from the first semifinal to win the ’47 premiership, but in the first official SANFL game associated with Anzac Day, the Redlegs won by 38 points.

Anzac Day matches were played each of the following five seasons, but none of the games featured the two grand final combatants together from the previous year.

From 1954 the now-traditional clash of the previous season’s grand finalists kicked off on Anzac Day with West Torrens tackling Port Adelaide, with the footy kicking off after the Anzac March.

Football Park’s first Anzac Day clash involving the previous year’s grand final combatants was held in 1975, when Glenelg, beaten by Sturt by 15 points in Footy Park’s first premiership decider, turned the tables with a 16-point win.

The Tigers will host the Double Blues at the Bay this year looking to square the ledger in their Anzac Day clashes. The Blues won in 1970 by 28 points and 1971 by 15 points.

From 1986 to 2000 the annual meetings of the grand finalists on Anzac Day broke down, the match only taking place four times in this period. But since 2001 it has been a regular feature on the SANFL calendar, most recently played at the reigning premier’s home ground.

The Covid epidemic played havoc with footy across Australia and the delay of the 2020 season caused an anomaly in 2021 when two Anzac Day games were played. The grand finalists from the 2019 premiership decider, Glenelg and Port, played on the same day as the top two sides of 2020, the Eagles and North.

Of the 57 Anzac Day matches featuring the previous SANFL grand finalists, Port has played the most, with 27, followed by Norwood (16) and Sturt (15). The reigning premier has won 30 times, lost 26 and there was one draw – Port v Glenelg in 1982.

FORTUNES OF WAR

He was a freakish sportsman. In footy and cricket his elite hand-eye co-ordination meant 99 times out of 100 he grabbed the ball – whatever shape – as clean as a whistle. So it’s surprising he actually suffered a broken finger playing cricket in 1944. He was standing over the stumps when a low, hard return brushed the bails and ricocheted into his hand. The incident proved a matter of life or death.

Eighteen-year-old Colin Churchett had been training in Watsons Bay, Sydney, to be a Navy radar operator in World War II. He had been assigned to HMAS Australia, preparing for service in Indonesia. After his fielding mishap in a game for the Navy in Rushcutters Bay, his arm was put in plaster and his War duty delayed.

Another 18-year-old from Adelaide, Ron Hocking, a promising junior colts footballer with West Torrens, took Churchett’s place on HMAS Australia. The heavy cruiser had arrived in the Philippines at Leyte Bay, the site of the largest naval battle of World War II, when, at dawn on October 21, Japanese aircraft attacked on a bombing mission. A dive bomber was damaged, then turned and flew at low level, crashing into Australia’s foremast. The bridge was showered with debris and burning fuel and seven officers and 23 sailors were killed in a collision some witnesses claimed was a deliberate ramming or kamikaze attack. One of those killed was young Hocking.

There was little time to think of those sorts of sliding doors moments in the second World War, when 27,000 young Australians were killed. Churchett was now assigned to HMAS Hobart and it was aboard this light cruiser he served until the War ended. He was looking for adventure and he sure got it. He saw first-hand a couple of the world’s most historic moments, the carnage created by the atom bomb that brought about the end of the War and the Japanese surrender that followed. And he recorded it all in a pocket diary he kept in his sock. It was a notebook that could have seen him court martialed.

For Colin, it seemed a part of life to serve your country and empire in wartime. His father, Joe, was a sergeant in World War I in the first 27th in the gunnery department. He was at the second landing in the ill6

fated campaign at Gallipoli, where the legend of Anzac spirit was born. Joe, who also fought in France, didn’t stand in Colin’s way when it was his turn to sign up in 1944, although he warned him, ‘don’t go in the Army, mate … you’ll be sorry – they do it that tough in the Army”.

Colin, who had been playing footy with West-Glenelg, joined the Navy after turning 18 on 30 January 1944. His outstanding vision earned him a responsible job in the radar room, where he became the ship’s eyes. After a three-month training course in Flinders, 70 km south of Melbourne, during which he played one league game for South Melbourne, he was sent to Watson’s Bay for a five-week radar course. Then came a game of cricket and what at the time seemed a frustrating finger injury.

“I was pretty lucky,” Churchett recalled. “I might not have been on that set (when HMAS Australia was hit by the Japanese plane) but I might possibly have been on there. We were still in Sydney … I thought it could have been me (who died).”

But it didn’t make him feel any different about going to war. And it wasn’t long before he was embroiled in his own skirmish with the Japanese – before he had even left Australian waters. Japan’s midget submarine attack on Sydney in 1942 sent shockwaves across the nation

but Churchett wasn’t expecting to experience action stations for the first time just yet as the crew of HMAS Hobart was seeing in the New Year of 1945 in Sydney Harbour. But the wailing sirens aboard the ship at about 11pm signalled the drills and practice runs were over and this was the real thing. A large foreign submarine had been detected outside the harbour and Hobart’s ASDIC underwater detection device, better known as sonar, recognised the submarine entering Sydney Harbour as a mother ship, which carried midget subs.

“So then we chased it and we chased it,” Churchett recalled. “We dropped about 18 bloody big depth charges and we hung around to see whether we had found any wreckage ... we evidently missed it. But we went about 200 miles chasing this submarine.”

The horror of death never was far away but nothing could prepare Churchett and his shipmates for what was ahead. HMAS Hobart was sent to Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the United States detonated nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities on August 6 and 9, 1945, killing up to 226,000 people.

The scene was beyond comprehension. The Aussies had been sent in to look for wounded civilians but there were none. There was next to nothing anywhere and a friend of Colin’s took photos showing the devastation.

The effects of nuclear warfare had been debated and

there was concern about the Allies checking out the sites. “They were very worried about us going in,” Churchett recalled. But go in they did, to a sombre, eerie and unnatural world. “These are a few of the remaining buildings on the outskirts of Hiroshima,” Churchett said, pointing at one of the photos. “It was like that for three miles that way, three miles that way and three miles that way. You wouldn’t believe it.”

Churchett and the HMAS Hobart were in Tokyo Bay on Victory Over Japan Day on 2 September 1945, when the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed.

Churchett was as modest as they come and he was understated about most things. But his chest swelled with pride as he recalled this time.

“The surrender, that was one of the mightiest things I have ever seen,” he said. “The surrender when we went up there ... we were the flagship of the Australian Navy at that stage and we were alongside the USS Missouri which was where it all took place. I’ve got photos of it, plenty of photos of the surrender from our ship. It was great, yeah.”

The Surrender Ceremony, which formally brought an end to the bloodiest conflict in human history, lasted just 23 minutes, including a speech from General Douglas MacArthur and Japan’s Emperor Hirohito signing the official agreement.

“I’ve never seen anything like it when just before the surrender was signed about 3000 Allied planes came over … they were everywhere and they’d come from everywhere. It was a really sunny morning but it blotted out the sun.”

It was a powerful memory but Churchett had some help recalling his action-packed year of service. He kept a diary, even though he knew he was not allowed to. “I wanted to record where we were and what was happening,” he reasoned.

The diary’s pages are now frail and tattered with age but they provide an insight into a man who put it all on the line for his country and a reminder of how different this era was, with no mobile phones or emails to keep in touch with anxious family. Colin endeavoured to keep his up-to-date by sending letters which finished with what amounted to a coded message asking how a friend or relative was keeping. “I used to write a letter every now and again saying ‘remember me to Mrs O’Reilly’ and O’Reilly back here (in the diary) was code for me being in Borneo. A few of the letters mum and dad showed me when I got back, when I mentioned Mrs O’Reilly or whoever, the names were cut out – they were censoring the letters.”

The Anzac Day march and SANFL Anzac Day game, when Churchett for many years featured in a moving motorcade, filled him with pride. And when he was asked how he looked back on his experiences in the War, more than 60 years after he had seen its ending, he barely hesitated. “It was wonderful.”

GLENELG V STURT

Neither of last year’s grand finalists likes losing. Hence Glenelg’s reaction to defeat at the hands of Norwood by bombing on five goals in the opening 13 minutes in an impressive win against Adelaide. “We put a real focus on starting well because we haven’t been doing that,” Tigers premiership coach Darren Reeves said. Expect a similar response from dual flagwinning coach Martin Mattner’s Blues after their hard-fought six-point loss to North.

Since Mark Stone’s Tigers discovered the winning habit two-thirds of the way into his first season in charge in 2018, Glenelg has lost just 24 of its past 106 matches. This incredible run, which has yielded two flags from three grand final appearances, is made all the more remarkable when you consider the club had won just 29 of its previous 106 games stretching back into the 2012 season. It’s about as complete and dramatic a turnaround as you could imagine and the winning habit is something 8

Reeves, who has not suffered successive losses in his time at the Bay, will be determined to maintain.

Apart from their unlucky Roosters loss, only decided after the siren, the Blues will have last year’s 24-point grand final defeat at the back of their minds as they target a win at the Bay, where these rivals always pack in a bumper crowd. All these ingredients, along with the fact SANFL’s Anzac Day clash which traditionally sees the previous year’s grand finalists pitted against each other is just about the biggest date on the local sporting calendar, point to an unforgettable clash of the titans.

WEST V SOUTH Sometimes the winning habit can suddenly click in, like it did for Glenelg in 2018. But, more often than not, it takes time and patience. The Bloods and Panthers are trying to turn things around despite losses of experienced players, injuries and losses in close games over the past few seasons.

Westies are thoroughly sick of being

wooden spooners but, after stunning Port with a fighting comeback win, came up short against unbeaten Norwood. The winless young Panthers were left to rue a slow start, in which they conceded the first 4.2 against Central, but coach Jarrad Wright was given cause for optimism with the way his inexperienced side fought back to look a winning chance early in the last quarter. South’s lineup included 15 players with 10 or less games of experience and while you’re rebuilding finding consistency over 100 minutes of footy and from week to week takes time. First-gamer Callum McCarty, a 23-year-old recruit from Essendon’s VFL side, showed promise, Oscar Clavarino marked strongly in his return from a shoulder reconstruction, while Liam Fitt and Damon Freitag kicked seven goals between them. The Bloods have been consistently closing the gap over the past two years and their attitude and contested work is right around the mark but some polish is missing when they transition into attack. One of

these coaches will be relieved to have that winning feeling return here.

CENTRAL V EAGLES

Suddenly, it’s the early 2000s again.

The Eagles and Bulldogs at the top of the ladder, unbeaten, right back into that winning habit. It’s a habit Paul Thomas was used to as a superstar player from those halcyon Dog days.

Now, thanks to a gritty 26-point away win against South, he’s coached Central to its first 3-0 start to a season since its 2010 premiershipwinning campaign, when he was captain. He was also skipper in 2015 when Central had last beaten the Panthers at Noarlunga. Opposite number Sam Jacobs could not have made a more impressive league coaching debut, leading the Eagles to wins over West (64 points), North (92) and Port (26). There’s no chance he will be getting carried away yet, of course. “The tests will come, this competition is so hard,” he said, preferring to have a chat “around half way” when “we have played everyone, that will give us more of an idea where we stand”. But Eagles fans are already embracing their side’s return to winning ways, led so strongly from the front by Joseph Sinor, who was in the thick of it against Port with 30 touches, 10 marks and the goal that put the icing on the cake midway through the last quarter.

The Bulldogs made an early statement against South, ramming on 4.2 to nothing in the first 10 minutes, that 26 points the final margin.

Livewire Jake Gasper slotted five goals, including three in the first seven minutes, while Fos Williams Medallist Jez McLennan’s rebounding out of defence just keeps getting better.

NORTH V ADELAIDE

Roosters boss Jacob Surjan described a surprise 92-point belting at the hands of the Eagles an embarrassment, so there was no doubt a response was brewing.

Getting off to a fast start was a key to Glenelg and Central’s wins and so it was with North as it hit back hard against Sturt, booting the first 2.1 before the Blues knew what hit them.

The final margin was six points.

The game was decided after the final siren and it’s not hard to see the result.

Surjan said the fighting performance was a “character-building win for the football club” looking to regain the winning habit that took it to the 2022 grand final. Surjan took it upon himself to try to make things happen, bringing in 19-year-old Kelsey Rypstra, who gave the Roosters the perfect start with the first goal with his first kick at SANFL level, and ruckman Liam Hoy, 25, meaning usual ruck ace Mitch Harvey could go forward. He bagged a matchwinning four goals.

Games were all about the starts last week and Adelaide coach Michael Godden described his side’s first 13 minutes against Glenelg as “unacceptable” and it conceded the first seven goals of the game. But his line-up was very different from the past two seasons when the Crows reached preliminary finals and his inexperienced side showed plenty of bottle to fight the game out, kicking the last six goals, Billy Dowling continuing to show what a bright future he has with 27 disposals and eight clearances.

PORT V NORWOOD

Winning – or losing – can quickly become a habit. Last season the Redlegs, as reigning premiers,

surprisingly got into the habit of losing tight games they could have won and were 0-8. This time around, they are 3-0 and, even though not at their best, they did what was needed when it was needed to overcome West by 13 points in Port Lincoln, showcasing their winning ways in their regional area. Norwood’s tenacious tackling continues to have a huge impact, chalking up 137 to West’s 83, while former Panther Mitch O’Neill, who collected 30 disposals, 11 clearances and 10 tackles, again showed what a key recruit he is. And what more can you say about ruck giant Harry Boyd? He casually knocked up 54 hit-outs, 15 disposals and nine clearances.

Port Adelaide again was around the mark without breaking through for new coach Hamish Hartlett’s first win.

It wasn’t until late in the third quarter the top-placed Eagles kicked away at Woodville, Hartlett “happy with the way the guys went about it”, led from the front as usual by hard-nut skipper and Bob McLean Medal winner Nick Moore. For the second week in a row the Magpies had their opportunities, winning the inside-50 count 49-39 but unable to capitalise. Star ruck Leah Cutting winning hit-outs for Norwood and the Eagles.

Hard working, energetic and resilient – these have been the hallmarks of Leah Cutting’s imposing careers across two contrasting sports. She has just ticked past the 75 elite women’s game milestone – including eight AFLW matches – and, despite being 32, she is keen to reach the 100-game landmark.

Cutting, a full-time response officer at Henley Beach Police Station, in her eighth year in the forces, kicked off her sporting career at five in the demanding sport of swimming. “I was initially a long-distance freestyle pool swimmer,” Cutting said. “When I was 18 or 19 I started getting involved in open-water swimming.” She competed in the Youth Olympic Games in Sydney and World University Games. “I swam in national teams at World Cups and made a number of friendships but it is a mentally tough sport, with a lot of repetition. I was done at 22 and spent the next six months doing nothing.”

It was then Cutting became involved with strong SAWFL club Morphettville Park and “fell in love with the community and the game”.

When the SANFLW arrived on 17 February 2017, it was hardly surprising Cutting was a part of the action. The talented ruck was

Norwood vice-captain, dominating with 30 hit-outs in a 42-point win against North Adelaide in the historic first SANFLW game. Bek McMahon, her captain and premiership team-mate that season, called Cutting an “energizer bunny”.

“She has squeezed every ounce out of her ability,” said McMahon, titlewinning SA under-16 coach of the past two seasons and SANFL talent coordinator, female programs.

“Moving from swimming to footy, she has ensured her body is strong enough for the rigours of our game.

She has friendship-first leadership skills and has been such a durable athlete … a great team-mate and person.”

After a six-game minor round the debut SANFLW year was capped off with a 27-point grand final win over North at Unley Oval, Cutting again winning 30 hit-outs to go with 11 possessions and six tackles. “It was great to get the win in the first year under coach Steve Symonds,” Cutting said. “We were around the mark for the next few years, playing finals, but couldn’t win another grand final.”

Cutting played seven games with St Kilda in 2022 (AFLW Season 6) and added one with Essendon in

2023. It was a “special moment” when Saints coach Nick Dal Santo told her she would be making her debut, against Richmond.

She took the chance to revitalise her career last year with WoodvilleWest Torrens. It was the lure of playing under coach Narelle Smith, also a highly-respected police officer, that sparked the move. “She is the type of coach you want to work hard for, you want to win games for her,” said Cutting, who rates Smith one of her main mentors, along with former Norwood captain Ali Ferrall. “I love her football knowledge – it’s great to pick her brain. She is a great leader and I value her as a person as well.”

Cutting’s sporting ambitions revolve around team success. “It is not about individual results for me,” she said.

“One of the immediate ambitions is being involved in finals at WoodvilleWest Torrens for the first time. The way we’re tracking, I believe that’s achievable this year. Before I retire I would like to play in a premiership at the club.”

Thankfully, she won’t be lost to footy after that. “I still want to stay in the SANFLW environment,” she said. “I’d like to get involved in coaching.” sanfl.com.au

North Adelaide held on for a thrilling two-point win against Sturt in a see-sawing SANFL Under-18 battle at Thebarton Oval.

Leading by 11 points midway through the final quarter, the Roosters were fortunate the Double Blues could only manage 1.3 with the final four scoring shots. Port Adelaide father-son prospect Louie Montgomery was in great touch for North, racking up 24 disposals and two goals, while Tom Tasker (23 disposals, one goal) and Charlie Dickeson also shone. Sturt’s Noah RobertsThomson made his presence felt with 25 possessions and two goals, while his team-mates Sam Waltham (17 disposals, seven marks) and Cameron Kelly were also lauded.

Central District’s second-term acceleration proved too much for South Adelaide to overcome as the Bulldogs registered a 61-point win at X Convenience Oval.

In front by just two points at the first change, the Dogs booted 4.6 to the Panthers’ 0.3 to establish a matchwinning 29-point break at half-time. Emerging Central midfielder Dyson Sharp continued his rapid rise with 30 possessions and nine clearances, while Beau Ryan and Jed Laycock also played valuable roles.

South was left to lament its inaccuracy (4.15) as it listed Dakota Sterzl (18 disposals), Blake Florance (14 disposals, 12 marks) and Benny Barrett (17 disposals) as its best.

Glenelg extended its winning streak to five as it finished strongly to record a 70-point victory against Woodville-West Torrens at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

Norwood recovered from a forgettable first quarter to register a 15-point win against West Adelaide at The Parade.
