When Travis Schiller, having been crowned Central District’s bestand-fairest for a record-equalling third time last September, announced he would be opting for a European summer over an Adelaide winter in 2023, the Bulldogs’ midfield had an enormous hole to fill. Enter Harry Grant.

The nuggety 173cm on-baller has stepped up magnificently, piecing together the best season of his career to spearhead Central’s newlook engine room and lead the Dogs’ bid to break their six-year finals drought.

“I looked up to Travy over the past two years, just with his consistency and the way he played,” said Grant, who turned 22 on Monday. “We recruited a lot of midfielders because he left such a big hole.

We’re filling that void as a whole midfield line because Travy did a lot of heavy lifting when he was here.

This has been my career-best year.”

Hailing from south-eastern NSW, just outside the ACT, Grant played his junior footy with Queanbeyan Tigers before developing his craft at the GWS Giants Academy. Grant was recruited to Central through his manager Trevor Clisby’s connection with Corey Durdin, who was drafted

by Carlton from the SANFL’s Bulldogs.

Grant made an instant impact at Elizabeth, ranking fifth in Central’s best-and-fairest in his debut 2021 campaign and taking out the Les Stevens Memorial (Development Award) Trophy. Unable to recapture that same form in 2022, during which he was hampered by an

early-season knee niggle and spent half the year in the reserves, Grant has stepped up massively this season, firming as the favourite to take out the Norm Russell Medal as club champion.

In the space of one scintillating month, Grant amassed career-highs in disposals (36 against Port Adelaide in Round 9), tackles (15 against Woodville-West Torrens in Round 6) and clearances (11 against the Eagles in Round 10), while ranking inside the SANFL’s top 10 in all three categories overall.

“I had a pretty good year in 2021 and then a pretty interrupted one last year with injuries and form,” said Grant, who works as an electrician.

“I had a strong pre-season to get my body right and a very big offseason in terms of improving my footy IQ and my running patterns.

I’m having a great time playing and we’ve been playing some strong footy as a team.”

Grant’s individual third-year surge has underpinned Central’s rise up the ladder under Paul Thomas.

Finals are definitely front of Grant’s mind – as is sticking around at his adopted State for some time.

“I’m in my third year in Adelaide and really enjoying it,” he said. “I’ve got a great job, made some great mates and the footy club has really looked after me. Hopefully I have a long SANFL career.

“This is Thommo’s third year as coach and we’re starting to see it all come together, which is really nice.

It’s been consistent hard work over those three years that has put us in good stead now. Every time we step out on that field, we’re thinking finals.”

EAGLES V PORT It’s been four years since Port Adelaide played SANFL finals footy – but that might be about to change.

Port last week leapfrogged the Eagles – and Central District for good measure. The Magpies jumped into fourth spot thanks to a 10-point win against West and with five victories from their past eight games are gearing for a majorround berth for the first time since 2019, when they lost the grand final to Glenelg. But the seventh-placed Eagles, despite being disappointing in their 18-point loss to South last week, will be refusing to think they are out of the equation, just one win behind Port, so this home clash is looming as critical. The Eagles can’t afford to drop four successive games for the second time this season and they are starting to get back some players from a long injury list, while one-game suspensions to tall forward Ollie Lord and hard-at-it on-baller Nick Moore, who chipped in with an equal career-best three goals against the Bloods, are a setback for the Magpies. If you’re having trouble tipping a winner here, history won’t 4

help. The head-to-head match-up between Woodville-West Torrens and Port Adelaide is 42-42, with one draw. When they faced off at Alberton in Round 8 the match wasn’t won until the 25-minutemark of the final quarter when Daniel Menzel sealed a three-point win for the Eagles with a nerves-ofsteel 50m goal. Expect it to be tight at the finish again.

NORWOOD V GLENELG Not many people learn Latin in Australian schools these days.

But there’s a phrase Redlegs fans – indeed, all SANFL followers – know only too well: Fortis in Procella. And strength in adversity is exactly what’s been emanating from The Parade in the past few weeks. A month ago, Norwood’s premiership defence was in tatters, the mounting tally of successive losses to start the season up to eight. But it has performed miracles before. The History Makers of 1984 stormed from fifth at the end of the minor round to snatch an unforgettable nine-point grand final win against Port Adelaide, the memory of Michael Aish, in the spotlight in the past fortnight as a

thoroughly-deserving inductee into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, sprinting downfield bouncing the ball to set up a crucial last-quarter goal still lingering in supporters’ memories. Even last year the Redlegs pulled off a miracle, trailing North in the grand final by 17 points 17 minutes into the last quarter only to somehow grab all the glory by a single point thanks to Matt Panos’s 27th-minute snapped goal. Wins against South and Port in an even season in which there’s never been much between fourth and bottom created some murmurs but it was last week’s win against secondplaced Sturt at Unley that has the Leggies fans up and about. But, this week, Norwood’s revival faces its acid test.

Glenelg could hardly be more impressive. The challenges keep coming and the Tigers keep dismissing them with plenty to spare – last week it was revived Central by the odd 63 points. The Tigers, who statistically have the best attack and best defence in the league, are defending superbly all over the ground, forcing turnovers and attacking with speed and precision to their tall targets

menacingly poised near the goals.

Now up to 10 wins on the trot, there seems to be no weaknesses, firstyear coach Darren Reeves could not be more impressive and there is huge depth within the club. Lachlan Hosie epitomises the leap the Tigers have taken this season from a highly-competitive outfit to one that looks a notch above any rivals.

He has been a revelation, playing team-oriented, exhilarating, highflying footy, leading the SANFL goalkickers with 34 (and Liam McBean is second with 26 and Luke Reynolds fourth with 24). And speaking of team-oriented, how special was it when McBean set up Tigers debutant Connor McLeod for his first goal, climaxing First Nations Round celebrations? Norwood’s Fortis in Procella will be needed against this Bays line-up.

SOUTH V NORTH Rival coaches Jarrad Wright and Jacob Surjan may look back on last week as the turning point of what had been an unexpectedly frustrating season. Whichever boss claims a crucial win today will reckon his men are right back in the hunt.

Last year’s grand finalists the Roosters had lost three in a row and five of their past six when they fronted up against the high-flying Crows. And the Panthers had lost seven of their previous eight and must have been feeling close to breaking point as injuries bit hard before they tackled the Eagles. But Wright was relieved and proud when South knocked off the Eagles by 18 points in a win he hailed as “the most courageous” in his 102 games as coach. Forced to make seven changes – and one just before the game following a late injury to Charlie Duncan, forcing Liam Nye to play two games in one day – because of a horror injury run, tough-tackling South displayed plenty of guts to snare what Wright rightly called “a special win”, midfielder Oliver Davis shining with 29 disposals and seven tackles.

Surjan wasn’t quite willing to call the Roosters’ stunning nine-point win against Adelaide “seasondefining” but, jeez, it’s sure made

the feeling different out at Prospect.

From battling for a finals place, also with a long injury list, they will now be feeling like they can make a real impact in September. But first they face up to another big test at Noarlunga.

WEST V STURT They’re getting closer. In fact, you can’t get much closer than within four points. Can the Bloods, celebrating the 40th anniversary of their drought-breaking grand final triumph against Sturt in 1983, finally break their current long drought against the Double Blues? And show that they cannot be ruled out of making a finals charge? After all, reigning premier Norwood is below them on the bunched-up premiership ladder and no-one is ruling the Redlegs out. If hugelyimproved West is on the way up, it’s time to make a statement and there could be no better time or opponent than Sturt because the Bloods have lost 15 in a row against the Blues, including the past seven on their own ground. The lowest point came two years ago when Sturt kept West to 0.6 in a 76-point flogging but the four-point defeat at Unley in Round 9, when they had the ball in goalkicking distance as the siren sounded, shows just how far Adam Hartlett’s side has come. But they still need to take that final step and play consistent footy for a full

game, including making a strong start – West has won just two first quarters this year and against Port last week trailed by 13 points at quarter-time before losing by 10.

As the great Malcolm Blight says, it’s a marathon, not a sprint and Sturt wouldn’t be too worried about slipping up in the wet against Norwood for its second loss of the season – after all, the Blues had plenty of chances. They will be looking to make the most of them this time.

CENTRAL V ADELAIDE Nuriootpa is in for a ripper here.

These sides will be hungry for success after last week’s setbacks.

The Bulldogs ran headlong into a side that’s a “perfect 10” right now, Glenelg winning its 10th successive game and beating Central for the 10th time in a row. But they showed what they can do with four successive goals either side of the quarter-time break and it’s all part of the learning curve for a club definitely on the up but striving for more consistency. The Crows probably wouldn’t have expected to be caught short by North in what was their most disappointing performance of the season but there’s no doubt they will also be up for what looms as an absorbing tussle on a special weekend in the Barossa.

The State’s best country footballers will feature in the Barossa this weekend for the 2023 Think!

Road Safety SA Country Football Championships.

Around 250 players, and a further 200-plus officials, from regional leagues across the State will descend on the Barossa region to represent their zone in matches at Nuriootpa and Angaston ovals.

The Round 12 Hostplus SANFL League regional match will also be a significant attraction, with Central District to host Adelaide in the Bulldogs’ regional zone at Nuriootpa Oval on Saturday afternoon.

SANFL Head of Community Football Shawn Ford said the Country Championships not only provide an opportunity to showcase the State’s best country footballers but also would be a major tourism boost for the region.

“The Country Championships are much more than a footy carnival – it’s one of the largest regional sporting events on the SA calendar, providing a fantastic social and economic boost for the entire Barossa community,” Mr Ford said.

“The Championships showcase and

celebrate all the great things we love about country footy and leave a lasting legacy for everyone involved.”

Mr Ford also acknowledged the continuing support of the Country Championships’ naming rights partner, Think! Road Safety, for community football in South Australia.

“SANFL has been a strong and committed road safety advocate for many years and the Country Championships event is a vital platform to increase awareness and drive home the vital message and education about road safety to our football community,” he said.

“Without our valuable partnership with Think! Road Safety, events such as the Country Championships would not be possible.”

The Barossa Council Mayor, Bim Lange OAM, said the benefits of hosting the SA Country Football Championships, including the Central v Adelaide Hostplus SANFL League match, were plentiful.

“It means a lot as far as the Council and our community are concerned,” Mayor Lange said. “Events like this are the result of investment as part

of our generational plan to upgrade all our sport facilities. The SA Country Championships will bring visitors into our region so they can hopefully stay into the school holidays and enjoy our premium wines and our food.

“Along with that, the outcomes of health, well-being and connection associated with sport in the Barossa are very strong, so the community gets right behind these sorts of events. We are really excited about the opportunity it brings for our region and we appreciate SANFL and everyone who has been planning this with us because it has been a great partnership.”

The SA Country Championships will see male and female representative teams from six regional zones – Central, Eastern, Eyre Peninsula, South East, Northern and Southern Districts – compete across the weekend. South East will be hoping to defend its 2022 crown in the men’s championships, while Southern Districts will be seeking back-to-back glory after taking out its second women’s championships last year. sanfl.com.au

CENTRAL Coach Todd Miles is looking to add another distinction to an already-stacked resume.

The Hamley Bridge Bombers boss has a football CV among the most complete there is, as a player and coach. He was best under-21 player at this event in 2005, three years later he was player of the championship. Following his SANFL career with the Eagles and North, Miles took Barossa District to a pair of flags and captained the SA Country side. Now he’s looking to win the championship as a coach. “(The) quality of our playing group isn’t in question, it will be about the buy-in of the personnel,” Miles said.

“In these shortened games, it is about kicking accurately in front of goals and starting well. Early momentum is a key.”

At Miles’ disposal will be co-captain of the 2019 Central zone victory Scott Mumford, now plying his trade at Angle Vale. High-leaping Lachlan Arnold, son of Central District premiership big man Damien, former Bulldogs reserves ruckman Jakob Thomson and Min-Man’s Charlie Riggs form the basis of a strong ruck department.

Through the middle there’s quality with Steve Burton, Sam Colquhoun and Ryley Maitland. Burton and Sturt premiership midfielder Colquhoun last year shared the BLG Football Association’s top honour, the Schluter Medal, and have continued their stellar form this season. A premiership team-mate of Colquhoun’s at the Blues, strongmarking defender Rune Gilfoy, along with Nuriootpa premiership player Mitchell Norton and exciting teenager Jack May from Mallala will play roles down back.

NORTHERN Matt Promnitz wants to rewrite the record books and take the Northern zone to its first Country Championship title. Coach of Proprietary-Risdon Lions in the Spencer Gulf League, which he took 10

to the 2021 premiership, he believes “the breadth of talent across the group will be one of our strengths”.

“Shane Ballantyne, who played in the SA Country team last year, will be a key target in attack for us,” he said. “Kyle Crompton, the 2022 SANFL reserves Magarey Medallist, has experience around the ball.

Kane Grund, from Whyalla, and young Tommy Faulkner from Ports will give us a good mixture of experience and athletic, youthful exuberance in ruck.”

Will Hewett, who played a handful of league games at Central District, has been a consistent performer in the North Areas competition, as has his Broughton Mundoora teammate Kane Bowley. Joel Palmer has been a wonderful servant of SA country football for a decade, while Andrew Wright and youngster Jordan Searle return to the Barossa, where they played with Gawler Central, Wright as a member of the 2014 flag. Another long-time servant of Northern zone footy is Marc Purcell from Broken Hill, while Orroroo’s Luke Bowman, son of Norwood premiership player Lachlan, adds versatility.

EYRE PENINSULA Kimba and Districts’ Matt Lienert was a six-time premiership player – three as skipper – and a dual best-and-fairest, along with winning a Mail Medal at 35 in 2015.

“I coached Kimba Districts from 2016 to 2021, winning a couple flags (2018-19), along with representing Eastern Eyre at eight Mortlocks as a player and the Eyre Peninsula from 2007-09,” Lienert said. “I got involved with EP footy in 2018 as runner for a couple of years, then assisting coach Scotty Feltus last year at the championships in Whyalla.

“I absolutely love country football and the mateship that comes from it, being very passionate about the State Country Championships, wanting to be involved and encouraging all players to do the same.

Sturt premiership midfielder Sam Colquhoun, starring with Tanunda, will help make Central a tough team to beat.

“My assistant coach is Murray Kelsh from Waybacks in Port Lincoln and runner is Rohan Scott from Western United in the Western Eyre league, both former Eyre Peninsula players.”

Eyre Peninsula’s leadership group consists of Sidney Masters from the Ports Football Club and Matt Crettendon (United Yeelanna).

Others to watch include Jackson Bennett, a dynamic midfielder from Marble Range who runs all day and Zane Montgomerie, from Streaky Bay, a high-flying half-back who provides run from defence. Versatile tall Cody Duncan, son of former State Country coach Luke, is an exciting youngster playing his first carnival, while Daniel Minney, who had some time at Woodville-West Torrens, is a classic rover, low to the ground and loves getting in and under.

SOUTH EAST Taking over from 2022 titlewinning coach Jack Kelly is Mundulla boss Nick Davis, who coached the Tigers to premierships in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara league in 2019, 2020 and ’21. He was appointed coach of the Kowree Naracoorte

Tatiara interleague team last year and took charge of the side again this season.

Davis was Kelly’s right-hand man for last year’s championship triumph in Whyalla. Davis played in the 2004 championships in the Riverland and was a best-andfairest winner at Mundulla among upwards of 330 A-grade games.

The man who lifted the cup in Whyalla, Matt Willson, the Naracoorte mentor and 2022 SA Country State captain, will be a linchpin again, along with Keith Crows’ Daniel Bibby. Left-footed ball magnet Bibby was best-on-ground in the annual interleague game.

Athletic 198cm big man Jacob Eats is expected to be a strong marking option in attack. Mundulla Eagles ruck Jacob Grosser was best under21 player in the KNT-Western Border match. Clint Gallio, the Millicent and Western Border coach with plenty of experience, will also be an on-field leader, while former Sturt player Rory Taggert is now at Naracoorte and will be used in a mid/forward role.

EASTERN Former Sturt and Eagles star Adam Klun steps up as coach. He is mentor this year of the new Storm side – the combination of Peake and Karoonda – after being playing-coach of Peake for the past three seasons.

“I was the runner at the champs at Murray Bridge, so I have an understanding of this format,” Klun said. “I started footy with Sturt and Phil Carman gave me my first game.

After 90-odd games with the Double Blues I had a season with Onkaparinga Valley in the Hills before returning to the SANFL and having two seasons at the Eagles under Ronny Fuller. My assistant is Max Sparks, my right-hand man at the Storm, and Jessie Edwards is our runner.”

Klun will be looking for leadership from Nairne Rams’ running defender Ben Powell, a Sturt reserves premiership player last year.

South East’s Matt Willson showed his poise and class to be Player of the SA Country Championships last year in Whyalla.

Sam Sanders is a strong midfielder/ forward from Coorong Cats noted for his goalkicking ability. Tailem Bend Eagles’ Aidan Coakley is an inside-midfield distributor and Mount Barker’s 2022 Mail Medallist Sam Callins will give Eastern on-ball grunt. Klun also has Murray Bridge Imperials’ Jack Penfold, the former Sturt goalkicking small forward who can push through the middle, while Berri Demon Brody Thompson will handle ruck duties. Tall forward Ben Salt, from Hahndorf, and athletic under-21 Archer Connelly, from Nairne, are worth keeping an eye on.

Hahndorf Magpies siblings Troy, Joel and Zabien Parker-Boers and Mail Medal winner Ben Moroney will be others to watch.

Double Blues famously won the league, seconds and under-18 crowns.

Key Southern personnel includes Brett Ellis, McLaren premiership captain and triple Mail Medallist across the past three seasons, along with being Great Southern skipper in the interleague fixtures.

Danny Juckers, from Willunga Demons, is a classy left-footed midfielder, who loves the contest and produced a best-on-ground performance at the Southern v Great Southern match in early June.

Encounter Bay’s Callum Tonkin is a super-athletic ruckman, Robert Schinder-Taylor from Morphett Vale Emus is an exciting and pacy defender who uses the ball well, while Bailey Hann, a former North Adelaide reserves player now at Noarlunga Shoes, is a hard-at-it midfielder. Crows-listed Riley Clamp is in dynamic form and will play if not required in the SANFL. Under-21 Jayden Scott, from Myponga-Sellicks, is a dynamic medium forward who hit the scoreboard with five goals in the Great Southern win.

CENTRAL Central District’s inaugural SANFLW mentor Shaun Ribbons is coach for the second season after Central zone won all three games in Whyalla last year but unluckily finished third overall. A Central zone championship-winning player in 2006, Ribbons is coach of the new Nuriootpa team in the BLG women’s competition. Central District premiership duo Lauren Breguet and Katelyn Rosenzweig, who Ribbons coached at the Bulldogs, will be his assistants, while Trent Mewett returns in his role.

“I have a trio of girls who were with me at Central District – Ella Mickan (Light FC), the evergreen Taryn Wills (Barossa District) and the Bulldogs’ first women’s captain Nicole Biagi (Angle Vale), who will add plenty of experience to our group,” said Ribbons, while Willaston talent Elizabeth Wilson, who has been a dominant player in the BLGW competition, has a strong skill set and game sense.

“Another Light footballer Jasmine Elsworthy, who is on the Eagles list and travels from Snowtown, has impressed with her never-giveup attitude,” Ribbons said. “Kira Tonkin, another young talent from the Barossa District Bulldogs, is a strong-bodied, straight-ahead footballer. Indigenous talent Jess Sandford, from ladder-leading Willaston, is a versatile player.

“I was happy with how the group went last year, they could not have done much more. Last season’s group was strong but I feel we may just have a little more depth across the field this year. We’re here on our home deck and while we’ll learn about our opponents on the job across the week, we’ve come here to win it.”

“I was runner at the zone champs last year, so it gave me some idea of what to expect,” Kimball, 26, said.

“We’re looking to implement a few more structures to make us competitive again. I like to have an attacking game style and that makes for a better spectacle as well. Having an attacking and positive brand gives people like our two-sided forward Nikki Phillips the chance to show their flair. We have been training as a group for a month and are looking for a strong showing.”

Abbey Stevens is a ballwinning, incept-marking midfielder/halfback from South Broken Hill, while Roos ruck Harris Ralph is dynamic and athletic, with the ability to win her own ball. Central Broken Hill half-forward Ash Forbes has a strong ability with foot and hand to create and hit targets. West Broken Hill Robin Mel Calliss is a classy ball user, with the ability to run and carry, while Samantha Ramm, from Port Augusta, who has played development league for West Adelaide, will also perform a role in ruck.

SOUTH EAST Mundulla legend Michael Hunt, who enjoyed plenty of success as a player, winning 15 flags, and Fiona Young from North Gambier are sharing the coaching role. They will be assisted by Scarlett Jarrad (Casterton-Sandford) and Ella Little.

South East last year was beaten by Southern in the grand final.

Among its group of talents is Limestone Coast league best-andfairest Dellie Brown, from Kybybolite Tigers. “She is a tenacious ball-winning on-baller, who reads the play well,” Young said. “Zhane Crawford from Casterton-Sandford Cats is tough as nails and enjoys the contest.”

Mundulla Hawks pair, dangerous utility Erin Horsnell and Casey McElroy are smart and skilful players. Alice Tentye, from North Gambier, was the best under-21 in the representative game and has excellent goalsense, while Jasmine Ryan, from Penola Eagles, is a tall forward target with a thumping kick.

“We need to be well prepared and focused,” Young said. “Our Saturday games are two 25-minute halves, so we’ll need to be ready to play from the first bounce. (It’s) tricky for our girls because we’re out of season – our usual Limestone

EYRE PENINSULA For coach Michael Paech, coming to the Barossa district is a bit like returning to his roots. He has a strong connection with the Barossa Valley, which goes back to the 1970s. His father Kym was captain of Eden Valley Cricket Club and a premiership player at Pleasant Valley, while his uncle is Central District legend and Gawler Central premiership coach Peter Vivian.

Along with player life membership at Boston Tigers, across 18 years of service, Paech has represented EP at the country championships as well as the annual Mortlock Shield carnivals for Lincoln Districts. Paech helps run the women’s football programs on Eyre Peninsula for Norwood Football Club.

“Some of our key experienced players for this year are Alex Mason, Michaela Wright, Sheridan Howell and Kendall Howell, who have all played at SANFLW level,” Paech said.

“We have co-captains in Tammie Waters from Boston Football Club and Abby Curnow from Waybacks.

Also in our leadership group are Sid Lowe from Lincoln South and Michala Wright from Tasmans, along with Alex Mason from Marble Range. They are all fantastic leaders.

“We have an exciting young group to keep an eye on including Kalea Siegert, who was best-on-ground for Boston in the ’23 grand final win.

EASTERN West Adelaide’s Damien Venning takes charge of Eastern zone, having enjoyed plenty of success coaching Blackwood, leading the clubs’s under-16 girls to flags in 2018-19 and, with former Sturt SANFLW skipper Maya Rigter, taking the Woods to the 2020 Hills League women’s title. He is the father of star West Adelaide midfielder, dual Bloods best and fairest Zoe Venning.

“When we cross the line, we want to be competitive,” Venning said.

“We also want to enjoy the camaraderie and friendship from the weekend and make it an experience to remember.”

Arabella Prowse, sister of Adelaide Crows and Sturt star Zoe Prowse, is skipper. “She is a good football person and has very strong leadership qualities,” Venning said.

“Another who exudes leadership is Holly Aiston, a wing/midfielder from Mount Lofty. Riverland talent Amy Shapely is another to keep an eye on. She played a couple of development games at West Adelaide this year and is a livewire small forward.”

Blackwood midfielder Elyse Haylock is a former South Adelaide player,

who is “a true in-and-under footballer with a strong skill set”.

Hahndorf Magpie Brooklyn Correll is a running mid/half-back type, while Onkaparinga Valley centre half-back Stephanie Morrison is noted for her intercept marking.

He will be assisted by his opposition coach from the interleague game, the Southern Football League’s Mark Rix. “We had the nucleus of a pretty new group this year and there are a number of exciting new talents,” Phillips said. “Our captain for the trip to the Barossa is Ally Bailey, from McLaren Districts. She was runnerup for the Great Southern Football League best-and-fairest medal in 2022, along with being a multiple Association and country champs representative. She’s a ripper human who unites a team very well and is a positive and inclusive influence on her team-mates.

“Our interleague medallists, Georgia Weatherspoon from Kangaroo Island via Yankalilla, is an exciting new talent who has the drive to really push herself to higher levels, while in the Southern Football League Tallara Power, from Christies Beach, is a powerful midfielder who loves a contest.

The Barossa Council’s ambitious goal to position itself as the State’s premier regional sporting destination continues to pay big dividends with this weekend’s Think! Road Safety SA Country Football Championships played in Nuriootpa and Angaston.

It follows a mountain of investment and community work already undertaken that also secured last year’s AFL National Inclusion Carnival.

It’s a big project, appropriately titled ‘The Big Project’, Council’s generational community infrastructure strategy, designed to enhance recreation, culture and social infrastructure in the region.

“The Big Project is all about futureproofing our community, creating opportunities for the next generation and making the Barossa one of the most liveable destinations in the country,” said Mayor Lange.

State and Federal Government and the State’s peak sporting bodies have been our partners from day one, and we’ll continue to work with them to keep delivering our priority projects.”

Football has been one of the biggest beneficiaries with Angas Recreation Park boasting a new junior oval, new clubrooms and changerooms, while multiple new changerooms were built at Centennial Park Oval, Nuriootpa. The new Nuriootpa changerooms were a key consideration in the venue

hosting the Think! Road Safety SA Country Football Championships.

Just up the road, Tanunda Recreation Park is receiving a $6.5m facelift with a new 280-seat shared clubroom and six changerooms for all genders.

New oval lighting and a junior oval have been recently completed.

“The Big Project is all about future proofing our community, creating opportunities for the next generation and making the Barossa one of the most liveable destinations in the country,” said Mayor Lange.

“When we switched on the lights at Tanunda Oval, or saw the juniors run onto the new oval at Angaston for the first time, it really brought home what we’ve been able to achieve for our community, and that’s been the real excitement,” Mayor Lange said.

Recently announced is the $1.6m purchase of land adjacent to the existing Lyndoch Recreation Park that will enable the future expansion of sporting facilities including a full-size second oval, netball courts, changerooms and office and canteen facilities, subject to finalisation of funding. Lyndoch will become the home of Barossa District Football and Netball Club, complementing cricket, tennis and

athletics at the venue.

“Developing the Barossa as a sports tourism destination has always been a key driver for The Big Project,” he said. “Early in the piece we signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with the SANFL, SACA and Cricket Australia to position us to attract these major sporting events.”

Having previously hosted the 2022 Toyota AFL National Inclusion Carnival at Angaston Football Club, The Barossa Council has demonstrated their ability to deliver exceptional sports tourism experiences. Mayor Lange remains “really optimistic about the possibility” of the Barossa landing on the AFL fixture list for the 2024 Gather Round. Council is hopeful of attracting more WBBL action to the Barossa this summer and other sports are firmly on the radar.

“As well as football, cricket, rugby and netball infrastructure, we’ve also invested heavily in upgrading soccer facilities at Nuriootpa with soccer clubrooms, changerooms, two pitches and lighting. So the Women’s World Cup in Adelaide in July is a great opportunity to have those discussions about what’s possible in the future.

“With over $10 million in grants and a Council investment of around $37 million so far, I reckon we’re on the right track and we are building as quickly as we can. We believe this is just the tip of the iceberg.” sanfl.com.au

Sturt kept a cool head as it cruised to a 58-point win against Norwood in Round 12 of the Torrens University SANFL Under18s at The Parade.

Despite trailing by two points at the first change, the Double Blues were starting to take control of the contest and the scoreboard pressure arrived in the final quarter when they piled on 6.5 while keeping the straight-kicking Redlegs – who didn’t register a behind for the match – scoreless. Sturt key forward Sam Waltham impressed with three goals from his 15 disposals while Kobee Dabinett (24 disposals, seven tackles) and Cameron Kelly also played their roles well. Norwood’s best were Jacob Newton, with 17 disposals and three goals, Jake Hill (18 disposals) and the leading disposal-winner on the ground, Jaidyn Mead (33 disposals).

North Adelaide remains firmly focused on a top-four berth after blitzing West Adelaide by 69 points at Prospect Oval.

Just one win behind fourth-placed Sturt, the Roosters showed they could do some damage in September as they kicked 7.1 to

1.0 in the second quarter. Fresh from representing the Torrens University SA Under-18 team, Louie Montgomery registered 28 possessions, eight marks and a goal, while Roosters team-mates Hunter Press (five goals) and Jed Dignan (24 disposals, three goals) also shone. Still searching for their first win of the season, the Bloods had Jaden Ward, Judd Hansen (25 disposals) and Ayden Hodgson (24) providing plenty of pressure.

Glenelg snapped a five-game losing streak by edging out previous ladder-leader Central District by 11 points at X Convenience Oval.

Leading at every change after a fast start, the Tigers made the most of a commanding 53-33 inside-50m advantage while also dominating the clearances 36-23.

The return of the Camporeale twins made a difference as Ben (27 disposals) shaded brother Lucas (29) on the best player list, while midfielder Ben Ridgway (26 disposals, two goals) also had a positive influence. Central hailed the efforts of Noah McDonald, Lachie Giles and Jayden Matz.

Woodville-West Torrens claimed top spot with a comfortable 47-point win against South Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium.

Leapfrogging Central District into top billing, the Eagles were incredibly impressive in the second half as they slammed on 12.9 to 3.5 after trailing by 11 points at halftime. Izaac Niemann (25 disposals), Harry Dodd (21) and Charlie West (19 disposals, three goals) were constant threats. South was well served by State under-18 midfielders Phoenix Hargrave and Sid Draper (24 disposals each), along with Blake Rodrigues, who tallied 22 disposals, eight clearances and six tackles. sanfl.com.au
