RIVALRY AS FIERCE AS EVER

“It doesn’t matter where they are on the premiership table, it will be a tough contest.” “There’s nothing between them.” They are expressions you often hear when Norwood and Port Adelaide square off in a contest, the old rivals always determined to win – and desperate not to lose. And that’s sort of how it worked out this year.

The Williams Gallagher Cup was up for grabs again at The Parade in Round 10. Or is it the Gallagher Williams Cup? As you might possibly guess, considering the nature of these clubs’ rivalry, there’s a plaque for the Gallagher Williams Cup on one side of the trophy and for the Williams Gallagher Cup on the other! But, still, you would have thought someone would win it. The Cup, first awarded in 1991 but not having been formally presented in eight years, was back in the spotlight in time for the deciding clash between the fierce rivals this season.

Port Adelaide had won the matchup at Alberton Oval in Round 5 by seven points. So if the Magpies could beat the Redlegs at Norwood, they would claim the trophy named in honour of wonderful families synonymous with these clubs. If the win went to Norwood, struggling with just one victory for the season before the big clash, it would come down to the comparative winning margins. So the Redlegs beat Port by seven points!

The rejuvenated Redlegs moved within two wins of the top five after fighting back from a 13-point deficit at the main break, sealing the gutsy

win with two goals to one into the wind in the last quarter.

“I thought it was an outstanding win,” Norwood coach Jade Rawlings said. The bonus was keeping the Gallagher Williams Cup – without actually having won it!

EAGLES V SOUTH “In a world of hurt,” was the way Panthers coach Jarrad Wright described his side after it suffered its seventh loss in eight games – a 37-point defeat at the hands of the Crows. Jade Sheedy and his Eagles side were also feeling the pain after a 17-point loss to Central and he conceded, “they (the Bulldogs) played the conditions better and our toughness, which is usually good, was exposed a bit today”. The old saying goes, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” and both these clubs under these coaches have displayed plenty of toughness and resilience in tough times – just remember last year’s tackle slugfest between them – and there’s just a game between them and finals are still in sight. Now it’s time to turn it around, something that can be easier said than done, of course. But Sheedy, saying it was all about a learning curve, his group hit by injuries and the loss of midfielder Mitch Hardie in the AFL mid-season draft, had faith his men could 4

regroup quickly. Wright was right to say kicking into the teeth of a gale wasn’t the start South needed against such a strong Crows line-up, his side, already down on confidence, well behind the eightball at quarter-time trailing 0.1 to 7.3. But it’s reasonable to think a line-up that features Mitch O’Neill – he’s SANFL top-10 for disposals, handballs, clearances, tackles and ranking points – Bryce Gibbs, Keegan Brooksby, Matthew Broadbent, Joseph Haines, Hayden Sampson and Eamon Wilkinson won’t stay in a world of hurt for long.

PORT V WEST If only they could play at their best for longer. It’s an age-old coaching conundrum and it’s especially an issue for sides with lots of young talent. “Our best is really good. It’s just a question of how long we can maintain our best for,” Port Adelaide coach Tyson Goldsack said after his side had been edged out by seven points by Norwood. The Magpies had looked a million dollars as they rammed on three goals in five

minutes to eke out a 13-point lead at half-time. But with the wind in the last quarter they came up short, although Goldsack was pleased his men “didn’t roll over”, continuing to put in the effort that has been a constant in their footy since suffering three losses to start the season. A win against the Legs would have seen Port in the five but no-one would doubt their hopes of ending the season there. A couple of famous Port Adelaide names were prominent as Jackson Mead picked up 27 disposals and had 12 tackles, while Jase Burgoyne earned 25 touches.

A young West side has shown its best to be good enough, too. The Bloods outscored top side Glenelg in the second half – but they were 40 points down at half-time. They failed to make use of a strong breeze in the first quarter, kicking just one goal.

“Our start was disappointing – we were slow and negative with our ball movement early,” said coach Adam Hartlett but, as usual, he could see the positives. “One thing I’ve learnt

about our group is that they just keep fighting.” Michael Mattingly picked up 29 touches while keeping Tigers Magarey Medallist Luke Partington out of the game, defender Callum Park, the leading disposalwinner in the league, added another 38, while Josh Ryan took 16 marks and Kobe Ryan earned 35 disposals.

West, like Port, fought it out to the finish. Which coach will enjoy having the better of this crucial clash for longer?

GLENELG V CENTRAL Bulldogs coach Paul Thomas has been looking forward to this testing match-up since his men strengthened their spot in the top five with a strong win against the Eagles at the Ponderosa a fortnight ago. Recalling a hard-fought ninepoint defeat at the hands of the Tigers in Round 7 – Central’s only home loss this season – he and his men know the next step forward is to win away from home, which they haven’t done yet this season, especially against such a strong side as Glenelg. The Dogs, whose resilience and team spirit are unquestioned, are undaunted by this challenge and they have the players to worry a powerful Tigers line-up.

Hard-at-it on-baller Harry Grant just keeps getting better and his gamehigh 32 disposals, 18 handballs and 11 clearances, along with six tackles and a goal added up to an outstanding allround game against the Eagles. Billy McCormack was a tower of strength in ruck with 37 hitouts as the gritty Bulldogs stayed on track to play finals for the first time since 2017. His battle with Glenelg’s Cameron McGree will be a crucial one. The added key ingredient in the Tigers’ premiership charge, McGree, who started his league journey at South Adelaide but last year was running around with Reynella Wine Flies, starring in their grand final win, is making a name for himself for his workrate and huge second efforts and against West last week he earned 21 disposals, 21 hit-outs and 10 clearances. Glenelg’s sensational first half set up a 37-point win against the Bloods – and that made it nine wins in a row.

But the Dogs believe they are up for the challenge.

NORTH V ADELAIDE “The times, they are a-changin,” sang Bob Dylan. Well they have been for one of these teams. The other – the Crows – have been a model of consistency as they push for their first SANFL flag. After 10 games last year they were 7-3, in third place.

They ended that campaign third and, right now, they are 7-3 in third place.

This time last year North was top of the table with an 8-2 record. So it’s been a dramatic and shock slip for the Roosters, who have won four, lost six and are seventh. Last year’s unlucky runners-up have had their share of injuries but no-one could have tipped they would have lost five of their past six games. Playing with improved energy they led at half-time against Sturt before six successive goals from the Blues blew them away. There’s no doubt there are better days ahead in these changing times but the consistent Crows will be far from easy. Coach Michael Godden, who steered the Eagles to a flag, is embracing the thought Adelaide could create history this year – and why not? The Crows have been the highestscoring side in the league and only Glenelg has a better defensive record and the way they had South beaten by half-time at Noarlunga continued to show how much of a threat they are. The long-term question for Crows fans is what their line-up will look like come finals time. “If I have this exact group going into a grand final, I think we could push any team,” Godden said. That’s a worry for Roosters fans.

STURT V NORWOOD Is there time? Can the Redlegs mount the unlikeliest of finals charges and get back in the hunt to defend their premiership? Incredibly, the tussle is so tight for what appear to be the final two places in the top five, Norwood can dream big again.

After beating Port Adelaide thanks to a gutsy into-the-wind final quarter by seven points, the Redlegs are just two wins behind the fifthplaced Eagles – after losing their first eight games. Ruck ace Harry Boyd and midfielder Nik Rokahr, the stars of last year’s stunning flag success, led the way in a gutsy win that came despite Matt Ling being

forced off with concussion just eight minutes into the contest. A cool Liam Robinson finish just before time-on sealed the deal and coach Jade Rawlings called it “an outstanding win … to kick a couple into the wind (in the last quarter) and keep them to one (goal) was full of merit”.

Sturt bounced back in style as well – after a humiliating 105-point loss at the hands of Glenelg, their first defeat for the season. Trailing North by five points at half-time the Double Blues regained their mojo to storm clear in a matchwinning third quarter on the way to a 16-point win.

“It’s a good response from last week,” said coach Martin Mattner, whose men were desperate to show the Tigers drubbing was “a one-off thing”. Casey Voss, Patrick Wilson and James Battersby all led from the front in a way that showed that was the case. If the Redlegs are to show they really are back in the finals hunt, they will have to earn it at Unley. sanfl.com.au

FIRST NATIONS FOOTBALLERS

First Nations footballers have made an indelible mark on our great game.

Over the years there have been countless Indigenous players whose skills have enriched the SANFL and been loved by fans, no matter which team you follow. While it would be a herculean task to try to identify them all, I will attempt to highlight some of the Indigenous stars who have made their mark on SA footy.

Apologies to those who may not have been included.

STURT has had an abundance of star quality going back to Roger Rigney, whose wonderful roving contributed to the club’s golden era of the late 1960s, playing in all the Blues’ grand final triumphs from 1966-70. Michael Graham wasn’t known as ‘the Flash’ for nothing, his electrifying pace and at times freakish skills making him a huge favourite at Unley and he starred in premierships in 1974 and ’76. He finished runner-up to the great Barrie Robran for the Magarey Medal in 1973 and was third in 1982, deservedly selected in the Australian Football Indigenous Team of the Century in 2005. Graham, still regularly seen at Sturt games and AFL footy at Adelaide Oval, holds the record number of SANFL games by an Indigenous player at 282 and he also booted an impressive 455 goals. And he represented SA in 11 State games.

More recently, Blues premiership player Byron Sumner not only designed Sturt’s Indigenous guernseys in 2018 and ’19 he produced personally-designed 6

boots for him and fellow Indigenous Blues star Danyle Pearce to wear.

Since then Shane McAdam and Ash Johnson have kicked off league careers at Sturt before going on to shine in the AFL.

Harry Hewitt was SANFL’s first Indigenous player. Representing Medindie, the forerunner of NORTH ADELAIDE Football Club, in what was then called the SAFA, Harry hailed from Raukkan, which colonists named Point McLeay Mission. Picked to play for Medindie on 22 June 1889 against Port on Adelaide Oval he had the crowd abuzz. A newspaper report enthused: “Hewitt, an Aboriginal, was a decided acquisition, and

although he played barefooted was about the best man amongst them, his alacrity all through the game eliciting the applause of the spectators.”

Alfie Spender, another talented Raukkan, played with Hewitt against Norwood the following week, both playing solid games for the Dingoes.

The legacy of the Raukkan talent continued in 2018 when Robbie Young, a Ngarrandjeri man, became North’s first Indigenous premiership player.

Greg McAdam was the first Indigenous player to win North’s best-and-fairest award – in 1980 – and to represent the State, in 1982.

While down from Alice Springs and staying with his Uncle Elliot in 1977 he had debuted aged just 16 years, 6 months and 9 days.

High-flying Paul Ah Chee, Jason Roe and Matthew Campbell have been other star Indigenous Roosters, while Keanu Miller, Nigel Lockyer and Gibson Turner are now at Prospect.

PORT ADELAIDE’s Richie Bray was the first Indigenous player to win a premiership at the famous club in 1962 and he added further flags in 1963 and ’65. He played 77 games and kicked 65 goals for the club over a career spanning eight years.

The Magpies have had plenty of stars such as Malcolm Cooper, Ross Agius, Shane and Troy Bond, Peter Burgoyne, Shaun Burgoyne – who went on to play a remarkable 407 AFL games – silky smooth Andrew McLeod, later to win Norm Smith Medals as best-afield in Adelaide Crows grand final wins in 1997-98, Eugene Warrior, (who also played with Norwood), Michael O’Brien, Stephen O’Brien, the brilliant Gavin Wanganeen – later a Brownlow Medallist and captain of Port Adelaide Power AFL side – and Byron Pickett, a future Norm Smith Medallist. Jase Burgoyne is now shining with the Magpies.

Australian and Magarey Medallist in 1991 (after twice finishing second), while also winning a premiership with Carlton in 1987. There have also been Gerry Hurst, Graham Aitken, Kent Jackson, Derek Murray, Damien Rigney, Trevor Rigney, Alwyn Davey, Alipate Carlisle, Damien Cupido, Roland Ah Chee, Matthew Rankine, Abe Davis (who also played for Sturt), Michael Karpeny, Kim Kantilla – David’s great-grandson – and current star Hayden Sampson.

David Kantilla is a huge name at SOUTH ADELAIDE. The incredibly talented, high-flying big man was the Panthers’ first Indigenous premiership player (1964), State player and best-and-fairest winner.

Eddie Fry was a smooth-moving star of the late 1970s, who moved to Sturt in the early ’80s and shone there as well. Quicksilver rover Mark Naley was one of the club’s most decorated players. He helped SA dominate in 16 State-of-Origin matches, was a Fos Williams Medallist, Tassie Medallist, dual All-

GLENELG’s first in a long line of Indigenous players was Syd Jackson, the smooth, skilful rover who had been a premiership star at Carlton. He played at the Bay under John Nicholls, his former Blues boss. After him came Mark Motlop, whose nephew Marlon designed the club’s wonderful ‘Stay Strong’ Indigenous guernsey – along with his cousin Keelan Fejo – and starred in the 2019 grand final win. There’s been Terry and Ian Milera, Kelvin Maher, Dom Barry, Tim Sumner and Shane Tipuamantamerri , while Junior Rioli and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera have gone on to AFL careers. James Bell and Connor McLeod, son of Crows great Andrew, are playing at the Bay this year.

WEST ADELAIDE’s Henry Peckham – originally from Alice Springs – kicked five goals on debut in 1950. The mercurial Bertie Johnson quickly became a crowd favourite, the speedster becoming the first Indigenous player to represent the State and starring in the Bloods’ 1961 premiership. He was then lured to North Melbourne. Crows ace Izak Rankine started at West, while Kenny Karpany played 68 games and kicked 45 goals until last season.

career was sadly cut short by a severe knee injury. Since then, the Redlegs have featured Joe Ahmat, Matthew Ahmat, Robbie Ahmat, David Byrnes, Geoffrey Clark, Tony Johnstone, Paul Motlop, John Tye, Anthony Wilson – now at Port Adelaide – Luke Wilson, Austin Wonaeamirri and Roland Ah Chee.

Sonny Morey is an iconic figure at CENTRAL DISTRICT. Morey, a child of the Stolen Generations, is a positive person whose inspirational story was told in the book Sonny by Robert Laidlaw and Robin Mulholland. He was runner-up to Malcolm Blight for the 1972 Magarey Medal, won a club best-and-fairest award and was the first Bulldog to play 200 games. Just about as popular was Wilbur Wilson, when he wheeled onto his left foot anywhere near the goals the crowd at the Ponderosa immediately came to life. And there was plenty of excitement when Phil Graham, 1989 Magarey Medallist Gilbert McAdam, big-kicking Derek Kickett, pocket rocket Eddie Hocking and Shane Tongerie had the ball. Eddie Sansbury kicked five goals in the Doggies’ 2003 grand final win while

Four First Nations players have represented ADELAIDE in the SANFL this season. AFL-listed Shane McAdam and Tariek Newchurch have been joined by Crows SANFL development players Isaya McKenzie and Blayne O’Loughlin.

McAdam, recruited from Sturt at the end of 2018, is the nephew of Central great Gilbert McAdam.

Eighteen Indigenous players have represented Adelaide in the SANFL since 2014. Charlie Cameron showed his early potential with the Crows while mercurial Eddie Betts made a SANFL guest appearance kicking four goals against Glenelg at the Bay in 2019.

I feel everyone would agree First Nations players add a great deal to our wonderful game.

FRANCOU DYNASTY

Maurie Francou grabs a big mark for North Adelaide against West Torrens.

He’s a chip off the old block – and the third generation of his family to make his mark on SANFL footy. Will Francou is the oldest of 1996 Magarey Medallist Josh Francou’s three sons – and the grandson of Maurie Francou.

Maurie and his young brother Ken were at Prospect in the 1960s and ’70s. And Josh’s grandfather (Will’s great grand-dad), Harry Francou, was a noted jockey.

“Dad and I are pretty similar,” Will said. “We’re built pretty much the same and hopefully I can add a bit of muscle to my frame. It is pretty special to become the third generation of our family to play SANFL league football.”

But it’s far from just the men who have inspired Will. “Both my parents were heroes when I was growing up,” he said. “Naturally, most football people know about dad’s footy achievements. My mum, Jo (Josephine, nee Lips), was a world championship-winning rower, winning gold at Lucerne in 2001. Dad says that’s where we get our endurance from.”

“His message to me as a player was simply around sticking to my strengths and the areas of the game I’m good at,” Will said.

Grandfather Maurie, who played with a physical presence, tallied 82 games for the Roosters between 1964-71, being Mike Patterson’s right-hand man in the 1971-72 premiership years while captaincoach of the reserves. He went on to coach Two Wells to success and was involved with Ingle Farm in the SAFA days.

Maurie’s brother Ken, who married Barrie Robran’s sister Julie, a champion netballer, played in the Roosters’ 1971 grand final win against Port Adelaide, tallying 59 matches between 1970-73, although he missed the ’72 campaign when living in England.

Josh Francou debuted for the Roosters in 1993 as a teenager before becoming a foundation Port Adelaide Power AFL player in 1997.

He was a noted votegetter, runnerup to Simon Black in the 2002 Brownlow Medal count and equal third in 1999 in his 156-game AFL career.

Josh coached North Adelaide for three years from 2011, culminating in a grand final loss to Norwood in 2013 – the last game at Football Park. Francou was on Sydney’s coaching panel from 2014-17, before having a season with the Crows, then was Stuart Dew’s assistant on the Gold Coast between 2019-21.

Happy to be back in Adelaide and watch his sons progress through the ranks, he is coaching at college to complement his teaching and media work.

Because of all this travel, Will has played his footy in a few different places. “I played junior football with Mosman Swans when dad was in Sydney and I was in the Suns’ Academy on the Gold Coast, along with playing for the Burleigh Bombers,” he said. “Port Adelaide has a rich history and it’s a privilege to don the prison-bar jumper.”

Josh Francou’s younger sons are Oliver, who is playing in North’s under-18s, and Ben, an accomplished tennis player who is a member of the SANFL State under-16 talent hub. The dynasty shows no signs of slowing. sanfl.com.au

The Electrifying 80s Kicking the winning goal was never on the cards for Tony Burgess.

The man who famously held Rick Davies to just two goals in the 1983 grand final spent most of his 185 games for the Bloods in the back half. Yet on one extraordinary day against Port at Richmond Oval, he had four shots on goal, including two majors and the winner. He scored just 17 goals in his career.

Port travelled to Milner Road in a match that pitted fourth against second. But all was not quite as it seemed. The Magpies’ magic was waning. The winners of four of the previous six premierships were littered with ageing stars. Yet they still had a formidable look in Russell Ebert’s first season as captain-coach — think Cunningham, Clifford, Kinnear, Faletic and Evans along with youthful Craig Bradley and Danny Hughes.

Three goals with the wind in the first six minutes of the final quarter stretched Port’s lead to 33 points, 14.11 to 8.14, and victory seemed assured. There was little panic in the Port camp when Geoff Morris ended a run of four straight behinds with his first goal some three minutes later. When Mike Smith marked five metres from goal and kicked into Anthony Williams on the mark it was apparent it would not be West’s day.

Goals from Bruce Lindner and Roger Luders chipped away at the lead but Cunningham’s set shot at the 20-minute-mark was surely the sealer. Port led by 23 points, 15.14 to 11.15. But the breathtakingly brilliant Bloods would have none of it. “It was a season where quite often in games things clicked and we were just waiting for it to happen and you could feel that momentum change,” Lindner said.

With Mark Mickan dominant in ruck, Smith outmarked Faletic and Anthony Williams and it was back to 17 points. Lindner struck again, crumbing a loose ball with 25 minutes gone – the margin now 11.

And when Morris converted from a free kick, it was a five-point game with 26-and-a-half minutes expired.

Port was hanging by a thread when David Kemp’s free kick from the back pocket was marked by Larry Watson. He squared the ball to Peter Meuret who shaped to shoot but caught Burgess AWOL from half-back from out the corner of his left eye. A bullet handball found his man, Burgess’s kick from 45 metres was shepherded through by Smith and the BK Faehse Stand almost lost its roof.

Neil Kerley sat poker-faced in his coach’s box. The Bloods had hit the front too quickly! There were still three minutes to play. But they held firm, completing one of the most astonishing comebacks of all time 15.15 (105) to 15.14 (104).

“I still remember Kerls jumping out of the box after the game, I think that was one of his favourite wins,” Lindner said. “It was euphoric and it reinforced we could probably do anything that season. Winning was always a possibility no matter what position we were in. It gave us belief. I believe that side could have

competed in the VFL at the time. I’m not saying how successful they would have been but they would have been respected at that level.”

Burgess admitted after the game: “I didn’t even know the score as I was running in to kick. I thought, ‘should I kick short or long?’ but I just kicked it as hard and as straight as I could.”

Even today, he remains convinced of its significance. “I think it gave the group the confidence in having the belief we could come from anywhere at any time.”

Buoyant Kerley said afterwards: “I have never been involved with any side that has kicked four goals in the last few minutes against a strong breeze to steal victory.” The defeat drained the life from Port, which won only twice more, missing the finals for the first time in 14 years.

West ended its 22-year premiership drought but its time at the pinnacle was short-lived. “I guess that’s the most disappointing thing. It looked like it could have been a generational team that could have seriously competed for five years,” Lindner said. sanfl.com.au

The Torrens University South Australian Under-18 team ended its AFL national championship campaign with a 28-point loss at the hands of Western Australia last week in Perth.

The defeat came six days after the Croweaters had claimed an encouraging 19-point win against Victoria Country in Melbourne. They ended the championship with a 1-3 win-loss record.

Aiming to build on the momentum gained with the spirited win against Vic Country, SA fought hard to be within three points of WA at halftime at Optus Stadium. But a damaging third quarter from the Sandgropers, in which they kicked 3.2 to SA’s two behinds, proved decisive.

Bodie Ryan was the Croweaters’ best player for the second match in succession, collecting 13 disposals and four tackles, while fellow defender Will Patton was another strong contributor. SA’s captain tallied 19 disposals and 11 rebound50s as he battled hard against the tide. Under-age midfielder Sid Draper capped off his brilliant carnival to be SA’s leading disposalwinner with 20, while also

collecting eight inside-50s.

SA had hit top gear against Victoria Country at Ikon Park despite having as many as six underage players eligible for the 2024 AFL draft. The Croweaters were fuelled by standout displays from two of those players, Draper and key forward Tyler Welsh.

Draper, who had arguably been SA’s best in losses to the Allies and Victoria Metro, was classy through the centre square with 29 disposals, four clearances and five inside-50s as his team weathered an early storm in conceding the opening four goals.

Playing his first game of the championships, Welsh – the son of former Crow Scott Welsh – looked completely at ease at the level, kicking a game-high five goals. “I was a bit nervous before the game as I tried to get into the zone but I came and let everything out and focused on the team – it was really fun,” Welsh said.

Athletic small forward Jack Delean kicked four goals, including a beauty he snapped over his shoulder from a tight angle. And he clearly enjoyed it. “I like a celebration, it helps get the boys

pumped up,” said Delean, who had also booted four goals against the Allies.

It’s been a century since Tom Leahy’s retirement as a player but it’s unlikely any ruckman has surpassed him as the greatest produced by South Australia. So, while it’s taken some time, it’s only right Leahy has been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Thomas Joseph Leahy was born on 13 January 1888 at Jocelyn St, Goodwood, the son of carpenter George Joseph Leahy and his wife Annie. When Tom was three his family set up house at 157 Gouger St, fortunate for West Adelaide as Tom and his brothers lived in the club’s recruiting zone.

Aged just 16 years, 8 months Tom made his league debut on 27 May 1905 (with his brother Bernie) against Port Adelaide on the Jubilee Oval. In 1906 Leahy played all 12 matches for West – while it lost all of them, Tom claimed the best-andfairest award, as well as making his interstate debut.

Leahy’s ruck dominance with James ‘Sorry’ Tierney, as well as the rising status of players such as HR Head and Tom’s brother Bernie, lifted West in 1907. The appointment in 1908 as coach of outstanding allround sportsman John ‘Dinnie’ Reedman – he represented the State in football and cricket and played a Test match – lifted West to not only the premiership but the title of Champions of Australia after beating Carlton by 19 points on Adelaide Oval. Leahy, now recognised as the best ruckman in the State, despite being just 20, also stood tall in the first Australian Football Carnival in Melbourne with all Australian states competing as well as New Zealand.

Tom shone as West completed rare back-to-back premierships in 1909 but, incredibly, an upheaval at the club after the season prompted brother George to resign as club secretary and Tom and his brothers Bernie and Vinnie left to join North Adelaide.

SA stormed to a stunning win in the national carnival in Adelaide in 1911 and Leahy featured high in the best players in all four wins, singled out for special mention by State captain Bert Renfrey after the historic final win against Victoria. “l reckon our win was due more than anything to the ruckwork of Tom Leahy,” Renfrey said.

The Magarey Medal was added to Leahy’s hefty list of achievements in 1913 – after finishing runner-up in 1908-9 and 1911.

Leahy was voted in as North captain in 1915 and, after the competition went into recess for three years because of World War I, he continued as skipper in 1919, winning his third best-and-fairest award for the club. In 1920 he became a premiership captain and, no surprise, he was the main reason for North’s grand final win against Norwood. “T. Leahy was the hero of the match,” noted the Express and Telegraph. It was a fitting way to close off a great season for Leahy, who had captained and starred in SA’s rare win against Victoria at the MCG in May. Tom also captained the State Carnival team in Perth in 1921 and so worried were the Vics their rucks targeted him, the Perth Daily News reporting: “The Victorians kicked Tom Leahy in the shins and ran away with the ball. Every now and again the umpire would bring that ball back and bounce it in the centre and the Victorians would kick Tom Leahy in the shins and run away with it. As a consequence of this, Victoria won the game, and Tom Leahy’s shins didn’t.”

When Leahy missed out on being voted players’ representative on the board by a single vote at North’s AGM in March 1922 he retired as a player. Leahy, picked as first ruck in SA’s team of the century in SANFL’s centenary year in 1977, played 58 games for West Adelaide and 111 for North Adelaide, while representing SA in 31 games.

Success came on the other side of the boundary line as he coached Norwood to premierships in 192223 before standing down after the 1924 season for health reasons.

There was no way he would be lost to the game he loved as he became a footy writer and was instrumental in setting up SANFL’s tribunal, while from 1944-64 he was resident officer at Football House in Hindmarsh Square. When he died on 7 May 1964, he had given the best part of 60 years to the game.

Almost another 60 years later, he’s in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, where he belongs.

TACKLE TIME We’re hoping the weather won’t be like it this time around but who could forget last year’s Eagles v South Adelaide clash at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval?
