f this is how good it feels to reach the grand final, what must it feel like to win one?

One of these sides will find out exactly what it’s like when the final siren sounds in this year’s highlyanticipated North Adelaide v Norwood premiership decider.

They’ve had different routes to the grand final – the Roosters as quickly and painlessly as possible, the Legs taking the long and winding road – but it all starts again and they’re both 50-50 chances when the ball is bounced at 3pm at Adelaide Oval.

Superstars Keenan Ramsey and Campbell Combe were whooping it up with team-mates after North came from behind to beat Adelaide in the second semi-final and snare the first spot in the premiership decider.

And Norwood coach Jade Rawlings was quickly on the scene to join the on-field celebrations with his players after their fighting preliminary final triumph against the Crows. They hadn’t led at any stage until the 15-minute-mark of the last quarter when Mitch Carroll, with perfect timing, kicked just his second career goal in his fourth game. No wonder Rawlings was so excited after the Redlegs’ 11-point win gave them their shot at the ultimate prize.

I

t’s a grand match-up and part of the excitement and mystery about the looming NorthNorwood battle is these sides haven’t clashed for more than two months.

The Roosters and the Redlegs have played twice this season, for a North win at Prospect in Round 9 and a Norwood win at The Parade in Round 14 way back on July 9.

Plenty has happened since then.

Jacob Surjan’s Roosters snared the minor premiership in a closelyfought season and went straight through to the grand final with an impressive 10-point second semifinal win against the Crows. There was nothing quite so simple for Jade Rawlings’ Redlegs. But they have done nothing but bolster their reputation since they fought back from a 55-point qualifying final crunching at the hands of Adelaide to beat Glenelg by 28 points in the first semi-final and turn the tables on the Crows with an outstanding 11-point preliminary final triumph.

Rawlings talked of his trust in his group after the qualifying final defeat and since then it’s been abundantly clear why. He has been building a side that plays the sort of tough, contested footy that wins finals and now the club that thrives on showing strength in adversity is within one win of a 31st premiership.

But the North Adelaide Football Club is on a grand mission of its own. It is looking to become the first club to win the men’s and women’s league premiership in the same season. The Roosters, remarkably, also advanced to the reserves and under-18 grand finals.

A North win would be its 15th flag which would place it level with Sturt in third spot in all-time rankings.

North’s ability to suddenly tear a game apart with quick runs of goals – it kicked four in nine minutes in a matchwinning third-quarter burst against the Crows – makes it tough 4

to match up on. That’s where Norwood’s ability to tackle ferociously and defend fervently across the ground comes into it, giving promise to an absorbing grand final match-up.

While ruckman Harry Boyd could be expected to give Norwood first look at the ball after a dominant season, the Roosters’ Mitch Harvey’s year has been under-rated and he can have a big influence on this contest. Around him are a trio of on-ballers who are used to winning plenty of the footy, Magarey Medallist Aaron Young, who averages 28 touches a game, Harrison Wigg (29) and Campbell Combe (26). And Will Combe and pacy Frank Szekely have stepped up, Combe joining his brother Campbell in the SANFL Team of the Year.

The Redlegs are constantly set alight by Nik Rokahr, who averages 28 possessions, but livewire Jay Rantall has also had an outstanding season, while hard-tackling Jacob Kennerley performs his role consistently week-in, week-out and skipper Matthew Nunn was just

about back to his best against the Crows after recovering from an ankle injury. Key defender Jack Heard has been a revelation this season – centre half-back in SANFL’s Team of the Year – while one of the best things about the Redlegs’ charge has been the way various players have stepped up for crucial cameos. In the preliminary final it was Baynen Lowe, who bagged four goals in a matchwinning performance.

Keenan Ramsey has booted 38 goals this season and the Team of the Year centre half-forward obviously represents a big danger, while Team of the Year full back Cameron Craig is a powerful, strong-marking presence.

Norwood will know winning premierships from the preliminary final is not as tough as it used to be – particularly in the days of just a six-day break between the games for much of the 1980s. Between 2015-20 six successive preliminary final winners also won the grand final. It’s another factor that points to a grand contest to decide the 2022 crown.

DANGERMEN

AARON YOUNG If ever there’s a dangerman for the grand final, it’s Young. What a year the Magarey Medallist has had, enjoying his footy more than ever after a 100game AFL career with Port Adelaide and Gold Coast. It’s easier to enjoy games when you’re winning but Young, along with other big ball-winners Harrison Wigg and Campbell Combe, has been a big reason North has won so many games this year. A midfielder who gives 100 per cent all the time, he can also chip in with important goals, having booted 23 in a memorable year. Just think how memorable his year will be if he can help North snare a win in the big one.

NIK ROKAHR Just six days after missing out on a Magarey Medal by one vote, after being sidelined for the last minor round game with an ankle injury, Rokahr was ripping into it again as best-afield in the Legs’ preliminary final win against Adelaide. The ultimate team player, the hard-at-it midfielder earned a gamehigh 30 disposals, while racking up 11 tackles and six clearances. His combination with dominant ruckman Harry Boyd, who also was outstanding against the Crows, is huge and undoubtedly the biggest worry for the Roosters. His prelim final stats make him the biggest disposal-winner in the league, with 559 in 20 games. He will be desperate to finish a stellar season with a medal.

HARRISON WIGG A long-kicking matchwinner who can stand up when it counts, just as he did in the second semi-final win against the Crows. Wigg’s team-lifting goal just before the half-time siren from 50-plus metres from almost on the boundary line, when North had been trailing by 14 points, was enormous. It was already his 24th disposal for the game. He ended up with 39 touches – eight more than any other player on the field – and to show how hard he ran, he tallied eight inside-50s and six rebound-50s. A true ball magnet, the dynamic Rooster has tallied 530 touches in 18 games this season, remarkably averaging just a tick under 30.

MATT PANOS He’s already won a Jack Oatey Medal. That may have been eight years ago and he may now be 31 but his influence in key moments in big games remains huge.

When Declan Hamilton handballed to him 30m from goal at crunch time in the preliminary final, the Legs having claimed a lead for the first time a few minutes earlier, it was put down your glasses, or your Budget, or whatever you wanted to put down. There was never any doubt he would take the ball cleanly and snap the matchwinning goal. He made it look easy, as is his way, and Norwood was into another grand final. One he could again have the final say in.

SEVEN GRANDEST MARKS

he spectacular mark is the most eye-catching, unique skill in Australian Rules football.

It, more than any other act on the field, brings fans to their feet. And when an amazing mark is pulled down in a grand final, it adds to the occasion and becomes immediately – and permanently – etched into our memories and SANFL folklore.

There have been some beauties in premiership deciders over the years. It’s not easy whittling it down to a top seven – but the Football Budget has had a crack.

7th. George Johnston, 1934 ‘Blue’ Johnston stood tall when it counted in the 1934 grand final.

Fresh from winning the Magarey Medal, the ruckman “did the Graham Cornes” 39 years before Cornesy did it, flying for a spectacular last-gasp mark and kicking the goal that put the Tigers in front in a grand final thriller. And he did it under some difficulty, battling a knee injury that meant he couldn’t train in the build-up to Glenelg’s first grand final. And his great grab came only moments 6

after he took a “freak one-hander” to thwart a Port attack. Johnston soared “feet above the pack in the goalmouth” for a famous mark that incredibly was captured by a Press photographer who knew all about being in the right place at the right time. According to The Mail “his towering mark on the goal-line was the turning point in a game which threatened to slip away from Glenelg”. The Guardian noted, “amid a chorus of sounds akin to sobs, ‘Bluey’ scored full points”.

Johnston in 1985 recalled: “I remember seeing the ball come up and I thought ‘it would be nice if I could grab this one’. I just had the luck to jump at the right time and grab it.”

6th. Stephen Kernahan, 1985 Quelled early by Roosters backman David Wildy, Kernahan exploded during Glenelg’s ferocious second-term fightback. In a fairytale farewell for the Bays before embarking on a legendary VFL/AFL career at Carlton, Kernahan claimed the Jack Oatey Medal in his side’s triumph, snaring a match-high 11 marks. Four were

absolute screamers, the pick of the bunch coming in the shadows of half-time when Kernahan bounded skyward in the goalsquare to latch on to David Marshall’s long, probing drop punt towards Football Park’s Lake End. In the middle of a heaving, flying pack of seven players – team-mates Tony Hall, Stephen Copping and Adam Garton and opponents Wildy, John Riley and Paul Arnold – Kernahan had no right latching onto such a magnificent grab. “How did he ever mark that, surrounded by North Adelaide defenders?” commentator Ian Day asked.

5th. Andrew Hayes, 2008 An out-of-character ‘hospital kick’ out of defence from Central’s normally silky-skilled Elijah Ware put Hayes in danger, with Glenelg ruckman Trevor Cranston bearing in. “Cranston absolutely had the licence to kill me, which he should have but didn’t,” Hayes recalled with relief. With his eyes firmly on the footy and running with the flight, Hayes leapt for an audacious Nick Riewoldt-like mark on Football Park’s members’ wing. Hayes’

bravery inspired the Dogs, who goaled moments later through Matt Westhoff to take the lead late in the first term, which they never again looked like relinquishing.

4th. Keith Thomas, 1984 It was the standout moment in the most glittering game of Thomas’s outstanding league career. Inspiring Norwood’s famous rags-to-riches premiership triumph from fifth spot and winning the Jack Oatey Medal as best-on-ground, Thomas’s heroic third-quarter mark on the wing is what everybody remembers. Duncan Fosdike pumped a high kick forward which Thomas spectacularly leaped for and somehow held on to, bravely running with the flight of the ball and avoiding colliding with Port’s Brenton Owens who was charging from the other direction. Thomas’s brilliance deserved better than for team-mate Michael Aish, moments later, to uncharacteristically miss a sitter. But the Legs would eventually have the last laugh.

3rd. Rick Davies, 1976 On the biggest day of his footballing life, Sturt superhero Davies was head-and-shoulders above the rest – literally. Late in the first quarter, Colin Casey’s long kick-out towards the outer side in front of the dugout was marked spectacularly by Davies, contorting high in the air over unsuspecting rival ruckman Chris Natt. He seemed to hang up there for an eternity. Umpire Des Foster described the acrobatic mark – one of Davies’ match-high 15, to go with his 42 disposals – as “the greatest ... he soared as if powered by a rocket”.

2nd. Graham Cornes, 1973 Trailing by five points, the Tigers needed something special as the famous ’73 finale wound down to its epic conclusion. Cornes provided it. Rover Craig Marriott desperately hooked a high floater towards Glenelg’s goalmouth where Cornes, weary, socks down and cramping in

both calves in stifling conditions, improbably found the energy to soar majestically over the top of a pack in front of the old John Creswell Stand and snare, perhaps, the most important mark in SANFL history. “I hadn’t done very much all day,” Cornes recalled. “It was just one of those efforts where the pack was starting to form, I had a bit of a run at it, I just sort of went for it and luckily controlled the mark.”

Cornes coolly converted the goal from a testing angle to steal the lead back, 32 minutes into the fourth and the Bays eventually won the all-time classic by seven points.

and splashed on the front page of The Mail. The photo made it all the way to London where it was described as having been taken at “a rugby match in Adelaide”. “I thought it was mine for sure and I was prepared to take it when Ian lobbed into the middle of my back and then put one leg on my shoulder,” Hall told the Football Budget in 2012. “I said at the time it was the best mark I ever felt!” It all happened because McKay, normally a masterful full back, was starved of opportunities in Norwood’s forward line – North won by 108 points – and decided to have a run in ruck to get more involved.

Team-mate Dean Stringer recalled, also in 2012: “I was right alongside and was about to go for it but when Ian was going for a mark we were instructed nobody else was to fly against him. I stepped away when I heard him say ‘stand aside, Reds’ ... I didn’t think he was ever coming down!” After finally landing, McKay goaled from 60 yards with a glorious screw punt to ensure his display of aerial brilliance wasn’t wasted.

1st. Ian McKay, 1952 It takes something truly special to relegate Cornes’ 1973 grab to a second-place finish. McKay’s mark in the ’52 decider was just that. The Roosters skipper produced SA’s ‘Alex Jesaulenko moment’ with his immortal, towering grab, snapped perfectly by photographer Bill Teubner – victorious McKay wearing the No. 1, standing on the back of Norwood ruckman Pat Hall, wearing No. 2 for the runner-up –

aron Young already has made his way into the history books this year as a Magarey Medallist.

But on grand final day he has the chance to join an even more elite club – one that has just 24 members.

They are the players who have won the SANFL’s highest individual honour in the same year as claiming the ultimate team prize – the premiership. The Eagles’ James Tsitas achieved the feat last year, while Glenelg’s Luke Partington was Medallist and premiership star in 2019.

Young on September 5 won a thrilling Magarey Medal count at Adelaide Oval, polling 23 votes to edge out Norwood midfielder Nik Rokahr by one, while Sturt half-back Casey Voss and the Eagles’ Riley Knight finished third on 21.

“It’s an incredible feeling … it’s a great honour,” said Young, who had been pleased with his season but wasn’t expecting to win because of competition for votes from his own team-mates. “As a team we’ve been really strong all year – we haven’t relied on one player,” he said. “Harrison Wigg has had his best year of footy I’ve seen and Campbell Combe again was massive for us. I thought we might just take a few votes off each other and leave one of the other guys who have had a great year like Riley Knight or Nik Rokahr or Casey Voss, who came home late … I thought they might have been a big chance.”

Young polled in nine games, snaring six first preferences, two seconds and one third, having averaged an eye-catching 27 disposals, five marks and five clearances for the minor round while kicking 21 goals.

Now he has the chance to join the 24 players to have achieved the Magarey Medal-premiership double, although one of these greats, Port Adelaide’s Charlie Adams (1921), was retrospectively awarded his Magarey in 1998 after originally being beaten on a countback, so he never had the chance to celebrate his dual achievement.

Andrew Jarman is the only player to have won a Magarey Medal and a premiership in the same season twice. And he did it with different clubs, with North

Adelaide in 1987 and at Norwood a decade later, with an impressive AFL career with the Crows sandwiched in between.

Sturt in 2002 not only ended a 26-year premiership drought, Tim Weatherald and Jade Sheedy romped away with the SANFL’s greatest award. And in the Blues’ stunning grand final win against Central, they fielded an SANFL record four Magarey Medallists – Weatherald, Sheedy, dual winner Damian Squire and 1997 Medallist Brodie Atkinson.

The Roosters will have two Magarey Medallists on the field in the grand final, Campbell Combe having won his in 2020.

N

orth Adelaide and Norwood are facing off in a SANFL grand final for the third time in a decade.

The Redlegs triumphed over North by 40 points in 2013, while in 2018 the Roosters came from fifth spot to upset Norwood by 19 points.

These clubs, who combined during World War II to win two premierships as Norwood-North, have met in six premiership deciders in all, with North winning four of them. The first time they clashed in a grand final was in 1920, with the red and whites winning by 48 points.

Norwood won three seasons later by 26 points. Then in 1952 it was North by 108 points – the biggest margin between the sides – while in 1960 the Roosters snatched an exciting five-point win in the closest grand final between the clubs.

The Redlegs have played in 39 grand finals overall for 21 victories and a draw (in 1894 against South before winning the replay by a goal). North has 14 wins from 32 grand finals, with one draw (against Sturt in 1919 before losing the replay by five points).

When the Roosters won the 1952 grand final, their score of 23.15 was the highest in a grand final, as was the 108-point margin. Both records have since been broken. Sturt kicked 24.15 to beat Glenelg (13.16) in 1969, while in 2004 Central beat the Eagles by 125 points – with the Doggies also matching the previous high score of 23.15.

While there have been two draws in grand finals, three premiership deciders have been won by a single point. Norwood has won two flags by the smallest possible margin, in 1925 against West Torrens and in 1978 against Sturt. In 2017 the Double Blues recorded one of their greatest triumphs, beating Port 7.8 to 7.7.

Five grand finals were decided by a kick between 19541965, four won by Port and three of those against West.

The Magpies held on against Sturt by three points in 1965 but the Blues beat Port in the next three premiership deciders, the only time in SA footy history one side has beaten another in three successive grand finals.

Possibly the greatest grand final at Adelaide Oval was in 1973, although North fans won’t remember it fondly.

The Roosters were chasing a third successive flag but Glenelg triumphed in the highest-scoring premiership decider, winning 21.11 to 19.16.

The lowest score in a grand final may surprise people, because it wasn’t the Roosters’ 1.8 against Port at Football Park in 1989. Rather, it was a game in 1905 featuring the same teams, with North kicking 6.8 to beat the black-and-whites’ meagre 1.6.

Charlie Dinning has been a prime mover for North Adelaide this season.

N

orth Adelaide charged home with the final four goals on second semi-final day to beat Sturt by four points in a last-quarter heartstopper at Thebarton Oval.

While the Roosters gained direct entry to the grand final, the Double Blues will get a second crack at them and coach Chris Trapp reckons their preliminary final hitout on Adelaide Oval when they overwhelmed West Adelaide by 40 points will hold them in good stead.

North coach Darren Reeves suggested the Roosters could have up to three changes for the grand final. “Midfielder Will Gowers is expected to return after some hamstring issues, while Jake Patmore will be fit and available and could play at either level and Tom Stapleton is also expected to return,” Reeves said. “Sturt belted us early (by 72 points at Prospect) but we won in the last round of the regular season (by 21 points at Unley) and then the come-frombehind effort on second semi day, which really instilled plenty of confidence in the playing group.”

diversity of goalkicking options, while, “around the ball Charlie Dinning, Jared Deep and Matt Longbottom have been prime movers for us”. Adding to the Roosters’ allround strength, Reeves said his back six had been outstanding, “with Mac Bowman, Blayne O’Loughlin, Lam Simon and Jamison Murphy all playing important roles”. Throw in the genius of Indigenous talent Kym Lebois and the Roosters have a potent group well-and-truly capable of grabbing the reserves crown.

Trapp was content the Blues had promoted youth again this year and he has seen many positive results across the ’22 campaign.

“There have been a number of players who have stood up for us and the win against West Adelaide gives us a chance to test ourselves again against North Adelaide,” Trapp said. “While we were minor premiers, a game ahead of them at the end of the minor round, they have beaten us the past two times … I’m happy with our underdog status.”

Trapp said 195cm ruckman Amos Doyle, from Mount Barker, had been

“excellent” and he earned 17 disposals, had 34 hit-outs and chipped in with a goal against West.

“He’s athletic, strong at the contest and gives great follow-up, along with his chase and tackle work,” Trapp said.

Strong-bodied midfielder from Kersbrook Mani Liddy, who has been a part of the SA State underage programs in the past couple of years, also has impressed the Blues coach, while Zac ‘Boris’ Becker has been a consistent key defender.

Promising youngster Chad Reschke was promoted for his first senior game in the preliminary final and looked the goods. Described by Trapp as “a big lad from Mannum”, he kicked three goals in the win.

Eligible to be drafted next season, Reschke kicked 68 goals in 17 matches in Sturt’s under-18 campaign, finishing runner-up for the McCallum Tomkins Medal with 15 votes, two behind Glenelg winner Ben Ridgway.

Sturt also has the three Lochowiak brothers – Mihail, Anzac and Jacob – who are likely to prove quite a handful. sanfl.com.au

orth Adelaide, which was second at the end of the minor round by percentage, gained direct entry to the Under-18 Torrens University Cup grand final and will take on Glenelg, which came in third, just a game behind the Roosters.

It’s been a remarkably tight competition and the Bays snatched a thrilling two-point first semi-final win against Sturt before beating minor premier Norwood by six points in the preliminary final.

North has enjoyed a week’s rest and will go into the decider as slight favourite. “(It’s been) hard to gauge, when you talk about the strength of each team,” Roosters coach Craig Brooks said. “It has been a good, even competition and most games have been quite competitive, despite the large movements of players across the season.

“The strength of the sides varies when the college participants are available. During this year’s finals

campaigns, bar injury, all sides have been close to full strength.

“Ollie Dignan, from Orroroo, with a six-goal haul, and his young brother Jed were important contributors for us in the second semi-final win. Isaac Keeler, who was playing predominantly in ruck, was pivotal in the second half. And we moved Shaun Bennier into attack after half-time and he was an excellent target.”

North is noted for the competitive aspects of the game, putting strong pressure on the ball carrier and being defensively accountable. The Roosters have plenty of depth and flexibility as well, with a number of players who can play a multitude of roles. Kane McAuliffe, a left-footer with a booming kick from Port Augusta, is a player to watch, while Hughen Wissman is a consistent contributor who continually finds the ball. Harper Montgomery is the older son of former Western Bulldog Brett and Will Francou is Magarey Medallist Josh Francou’s oldest son.

Ball magnet James White is North’s skipper, while other leaders include Billy Dowling and Angus Tully.

Glenelg outlasted Norwood to get to the decider for a second successive season. “We dominated the inside-50 count against Norwood,” Tigers coach Jared Millington said. “We will need to convert more opportunities in this area against North Adelaide.

“Our strength is our ball-winning ability with the on-ball group – led

by McCallum Tomkins Medallist Ben Ridgway, Archie Lovelock, Jake Walker and Will Trevena. Our defensive six, headed by Jakob Ryan, also with Hayden Brokensha, Brandon Smith, Bodie Ryan and company, has been consistent.

Apart from Lachlan Scannell and Ashton Moir, who is dealing with stress fractures, we’re pretty close to full strength.

wo highly-touted SANFL underage programs – Glenelg and Woodville-West Torrens – will face off in the grand final that kicks off a big weekend of finals fever at Adelaide Oval. The clash between top-of-the-table Tigers under-16s and the Eagles, who earned their berth by winning two knockout matches, should be enthralling, with an impressive array of talent in both camps.

Darren Trevena, a former South Adelaide captain, is in charge of the Glenelg side, while long-term SANFL junior footy servant Darren Hams is the young Eagles’ mentor.

Coming from fourth spot after having to secure their position in the major round in the final week of the regular season, the Eagles have had a pressure-packed month. In the preliminary final against South they claimed the lead deep into the opening term and never relinquished it, although the Panthers made them fight for their 9.13-to-8.12 win.

The Eagles have some more-thanhandy talent in big Tom Luck, on-ballers Kade Herbert and Jett Hasting, and key forward Tyler Welsh, the son of former Crow, Scott. Welsh has kicked 35 goals as a prime target and taken more contested marks than any player in the under-16s this season. He booted seven goals in the first semi-final win against North.

“In my eyes Tommy Luck was beston-ground in ruck on preliminary final day,” Hams said. “He has had a strong year and his last month of football has been outstanding. Kade (Herbert) and Jett (Hasting) had significant roles through the middle.”

The Eagles won the season-opener against Glenelg but the Tigers have comfortably won the past two clashes between these sides. But Hams said, “if we can improve our kicking execution we are capable of really testing Glenelg. It will be the team that settles first and makes the most of their chances”.

Trevena said he had used 65 players across the season and would have eight from the club’s fruitful south east zone in his grand final team. “We picked a squad of 26 early in the week and there are five father-son football talents in it,” Trevena said. “The strength of our side is the breadth of talent that has been displayed across the season.

The opportunity to use the expanses of Adelaide Oval is exciting for the group.”

Max Disbury will have a big task on Luck but the Bays’ on-ball talent is exciting. This includes the Camporeale twins, Ben and Lucas, captain Archer Rouvray and diminutive Charlie McAuliffe, who was runner-up for the inaugural SANFL Under-16 Best and Fairest Medal by a vote.

The Bays are favourites but Woodville-West Torrens’ underage record is imposing. This could go either way.

ack-to-back premiers and Champions of Australia. And with the best player in the nation – Barrie Robran. That was North Adelaide half-a-century ago.

Dismantling tough and tenacious Port Adelaide for the second consecutive year in the premiership decider, the Roosters then put a huge positive asterisk next to the 1972 season with their thrilling one-point victory over VFL premier Carlton on October 15.

But just six months earlier North was struggling and appeared to be suffering a premiership hangover.

In three pre-season games in March, against Victorian teams, the Roosters lost to Richmond, Carlton and North Melbourne, then were beaten in three of the first six minor round games. The loss to Carlton was quite a contrast to the Champions of Australia match after the grand final, the Blues thrashing North 23.19 to 12.7 at Prospect. But Robran didn’t play because of cricket commitments.

Although suffering those earlyseason wobbles, North had some milestones to celebrate. Robran played his 100th game for the club in the Round 2 loss to Sturt, while Bob Hammond notched up game 200 the following week, in a win over Norwood.

Everything started to click in the Round 7 clash against South at Adelaide Oval, with a massive 178point victory – 34.22 to 6.12. It started a run of five wins. Then, after a loss to Norwood, another seven victories.

A 77-point thrashing at the hands of Port in the penultimate round left questions but with a strong victory over Sturt the Roosters claimed the minor premiership with a 16-5 record, one win ahead of the Magpies.

North reversed the result from three weeks earlier with a second semi-final win over Port. Trailing by four goals at the first break – without a single major – North booted five goals to two in the second term, four to two in the third, and five to two in the final quarter, to win 14.12 to 10.15.

Port clawed its way into the premiership decider with a fighting six-point win over Central District in the preliminary final – after being 21 points down at three-quarter time.

The Roosters in the 1971 grand final had overwhelmed Port with a withering opening half, leading 6.11 to 0.3 at the main break before winning by 20 points, with Barrie Robran best-on-ground.

Determined not to have a repeat of that nightmare, the Magpies threw everything – including the kitchen sink – at North in the ’72

premiership decider to lead by nine points at the first break and eight at half-time. But the Roosters exploded with an eight goal-to-two third term, with full forward Dennis Sachse booting three majors – his ability below his knees for a big man was extraordinary. With a 32-point lead at ‘lemons’, North kept piling on scoreboard pressure to pull away and win by 56 points – Sachse ending with six goals to be second best to ... Barrie Robran.

Former Richmond ruckman Mike Patterson in 1971 had become the first Victorian to coach a team to a SANFL premiership and now he made it back-to-back – although he was unable to play through injury in ’72, with veteran Hammond acting captain.

Now the next big question – could the Roosters become the first SANFL team to claim the Champions of Australia title since a new competition was introduced in 1968? In the four previous seasons it was just Victoria and SA facing off, with Carlton, Richmond, Carlton and Hawthorn winning the titles.

For 1972 the Western Australian and Tasmanian premiers were added, with the draw set for the holiday October weekend at Adelaide Oval, with games on the Saturday and Monday.

The Victorians put a spanner in the works when Carlton and Richmond drew in the second semi, putting the championships back a week. The Blues beat Richmond in the grand final before heading to Adelaide for the rescheduled event on October 14-15.

North outpointed Tasmania’s City South 20.23 to 11.8 and who do you reckon was best-afield? Barrie Robran. Carlton beat East Perth by 51 points but not before Mal Brown had made a major impact. Brown, East Perth’s captain-coach, was a renowned enforcer and he was involved in some wild brawls which did more than a few favours for North the day before the title decider.

The Roosters opened the final kicking with the wind but were held in check, scores level at quartertime at 3.5 apiece. As most pundits would have expected, Carlton inched ahead in the second term, leading 7.10 to 5.6 at the long break.

And North could have completely blown its chances in the third quarter, having nine scoring shots to three but a poor return of 3.6 leaving it five points in arrears at the final change – and coming home into a stiff breeze.

Just five minutes into the final quarter Carlton went 11 points up and a history-making day for the Roosters looked out of the question.

But grand final hero Sachse raised the hopes of not only North supporters but it seemed every other SANFL fan in attendance, when he had the quick answer.

By now it was torrid, desperate footy and in the next 10 minutes each side managed just one behind.

Then Darryl Webb etched his name into SA footy folklore forever, booting the final goal of the game at the 17-minute-mark. Adrian Rebbeck, who kicked four majors on an unforgettable day, streamed forward with the footy and handballed to Webb, who ran into

an open goal, sparking a huge roar from the heaving crowd. But there was still a nerve-wracking final 12 minutes ahead, supporters continually turning to the time clock to watch it tick over to the regulation 25-minute-mark, then holding their breaths waiting in anticipation for the siren to blow.

When it finally did, it set off scenes of euphoria.

Alex Jesaulenko, a 1972 AllAustralian who kicked 10 goals for Victoria against SA on Adelaide Oval the following season, is recognised as one of the most brilliant players the game has seen. He was so impressed with Robran in the Champions of Australia game at one point he looked at the magic the famous Rooster was weaving and stood in his spot applauding.

oodville-West Torrens midfielder Riley Knight is the first Eagle in six years to win the RO Shearman Medal.

The premiership star polled 83 votes to hold off fast-finishing Norwood ruckman Harry Boyd, who was awarded maximum votes in the final minor round to fall just four short of Knight. Central District rover Travis Schiller placed third with 69 votes, while Magarey Medallist Aaron Young and runner-up Nik Rokahr finished equal fourth on 66.

Knight’s consistency was reflected in averaging 29.3 disposals, five marks, six tackles and five clearances to imprint himself as one of the competition’s most damaging players. The 27-year-old is the fourth Woodville-West Torrens

player to win the Shearman Medal, joining the award’s first winner Gavin Colville (2000), Justin Cicolella (2006) and Jared Petrenko (2016).

Voted on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis by the SANFL coaches in the minor round, the medal is named after five-time Sturt premiership star and SA Football Hall of Famer Bob Shearman.

Sturt players celebrating with the 1919 premiership flag.

O

ne of the best things about winning a premiership is the bragging rights that go along with it. But from 1877-1906 the SANFL – then known as the South Australian Football Association – made no formal presentation to premiership winners.

This changed in 1907 when the competition was renamed the South Australian Football League and it was decided a flag would be presented to the premiers. Norwood beat Port Adelaide in the ’07 grand final and before the first game of the following season the victorious team was presented with a premiership pennant and each member awarded a premiership cap. The flag was in what were then the State colours of turquoise blue and chocolate brown and emblazoned with ‘Norwood Premiers 1907’.

This tradition continued every year until the first round of 1915 when Port Adelaide’s ‘Invincibles’ were presented with the 1914 pennant and their caps. The ceremony took place at a sombre Adelaide Oval on May 1, the Gallipoli landings having taken place just six days before and Norwood and State wingman Phil Robin having become the first SANFL footballer to lose his life in the War. Sturt won its first premiership in 1915 but, with football at the highest level about to go into recess for the Great War, the Blues had to wait until Round 1 of the 1919 season to finally receive their prize. On May 1 at Unley Oval the chairman of the League Ernest Cleland presented the two-metre-long flag, although caps

Glenelg’s 1934 premiership shield. were no longer handed out. Sturt also won the 1919 premiership, War hero Ivor Nicolle steering through the winning goal in a last-gasp fivepoint final triumph. The Blues didn’t have to wait as long for the presentation of their second flag.

After finishing runner-up in three of the four previous seasons North Adelaide finally won one of these stunning flags for its 1920 premiership, the well-drilled team of the great Tom Leahy easily beating Norwood. It was the red-and-blues who won the 1922 title, also under the coaching of Leahy, and they were the last winners of the flags first presented when Norwood won in 1907. It was reported in The Advertiser before the start of the 1924 season: “The presentation of the pennant to the previous year’s premier has been abandoned. In place of a pennant the premier club in future will probably receive a bronze plaque.”

It took a while to get a worthy trophy organised, so Norwood wasn’t presented with its 1923

premiers shield until a league meeting on 5 September 1924. The shield was made of brass and was inscribed, in raised letters, ‘South Australian Football League, Ltd. Presented to the Norwood Football Club, Premiers season 1923’. The shield also bore the monogram of the League.

The tradition of presenting the plaque continued for 40 years and even took place in World War II with Port-Torrens (1942) and NorwoodNorth (1943-44) claiming them. The Thomas Seymour Hill Trophy we now associate with SANFL premierships was first awarded in 1963. Hill was Norwood secretary from 1926-35, before he succeeded Frank Marlow as secretary of the SANFL. Retiring after 28 years of service to the SANFL in 1963, it was decided to name a splendid new premiership trophy in his honour.

The trophy is kept by the winning team for the year until being passed onto the next year’s winner. It is presented with a pennant in State colours the winning team keeps. sanfl.com.au
