SANDYPORT ENVIRONMENTAL NEWSLETTER 19th September, 2019

Dear Owners and Residents, The Sandyport Environmental Committee is working hard to make our community a safer and healthier place to live. The Committee plays an advisory role, assisting the Sandyport Board of Directors to make plans and implement programs with respect to various environmental issues within our Community. We also hope to plan a few fun events over the next year to help keep Sandyport tidy, and provide an opportunity to meet new people within the community. On occasion we will send notices to make the community aware of what our team is working towards. A few topics at the forefront of our agenda are: COMMUNITY CLEANUP DAY AND BBQ Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 2, 2019. Sandyport is inviting all Owners and Residents to participate in a Community Wide Cleanup Event. It will be a day of working together to make Sandyport a cleaner community, with a BBQ after to reward our hard work.

FOGGING In an effort to reduce health and environmental impact, Sandyport will be using EcoVia EC for Mosquito fogging, and has changed the schedule to an as-needed basis. Any time you have concerns about mosquitoes or fogging, please let us know at info@sandyportmanagement.com.

WETLAND CLEANUP

The wetland area located near the Service Entrance has been assessed and will be cleaned of all foreign debris and garbage. This will promote a healthier aquatic ecosystem.

COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION With the hopes of attracting more wildlife within our community the Environmental Committee will begin targeting invasive plant species within the common areas of Sandyport and plan for their removal. In their place we will plant trees and shrubs that are native to the Bahamas and Caribbean regions. In doing this we hope to reduce the need for pesticides, as well as, promote a more natural environment in which to thrive.

MEET OUR ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE We are pleased to introduce the Environmental Committee. A volunteer group of individuals devoted to making a change in our community.

DAWID POTGIETER Dawid, with his wife and young son, has lived in Sandyport for three years. Dawid works for a local private charity that funds science research. Through his work he helps scientists work better together and supports them in research that would be too complex without assistance. He enjoys working with creative people and finding ways to make their plans successful.

Dawid hopes that by working together the Environmental Committee can ensure Sandyport deals with pests and mosquitoes in the safest and most cost-effective way. He also hopes to organize fun and rewarding activities that encourage others in Sandyport to take better care of the environment.

EDUARDO AZEVEDO Eduardo was born in Portugal and prior to his move to The Bahamas in 2007 he spent 15 years in Germany where he led the tourism development of www.ohmbachsee-glantal.de in the Palatinate area.

Together, with his wife, he aims daily to make people happy with their creations at My Ocean. Eduardo looks forward to collaborating in a constructive endeavor that enhances and transforms our world.

JACQUELINE LIGHTBOURN Jacqueline is Bahamian born and as a Doctor of Chiropractic her whole mindset, education and practice is alternative health. Through thoughtful practice and research she tries to live her life with as little exposure to toxic substances as possible.

Growing up in Delaporte Point Jacqueline has watched the community progression of Sandyport and became a resident of Sandyport in her teen years. She is extremely passionate about our community and will strive to make Sandyport as healthy and safe as she can. As a Real Estate agent at Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty she feels that being more environmentally sound will also make the community more attractive for home owners.

KIM LINES Originally from Cape Town, South Africa Kim moved to The Bahamas eighteen years ago and has been a homeowner in Sandyport for the past eleven years. She loves living in Sandyport and believes that it’s the best community in Nassau for families. Kim has a PADI Dive Instructor’s qualification and has always been passionate about the environment and wildlife.

Kim joined the Environmental Committee because she believes that the health of our environment is directly tied to our own health and wellbeing. She hopes to come up with solutions to minimize our environmental footprint as a community and thereby inspire and lead other communities in the Bahamas to do the same.

MARLA SKOPELJA Marla and her husband moved to Nassau in 2012. She holds a degree in Landscape Architecture and, prior to children, worked for a Resort and Community Planning firm based in South Florida. Marla’s work exposed her to the many environmental challenges that can be solved with thoughtful design. Now a stay at home mom, she dabbles in design when time allows.

Marla looks forward to finding ways to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals within the community, as well as, enhancing and utilizing lost spaces throughout Sandyport. She believes through strategic planning and a long term vision we can make Sandyport an even more remarkable place to live.
