40 activists were arrested during a promarijuana demonstration held on 28th May in the centre of Warsaw, 28 of them for cannabis possession and 12 for launching eggs and bottles at the police. Obviously, the police force hadn’t been informed that just a few days previously, President Komorowski signed an amendment according to which the possession of “small quantities” of marijuana is no longer grounds for an automatic arrest. The nearly 6,000 demonstrators’ demands were more specific: making the possession of 30 g and 3 plants of marijuana for personal use legal and liberating all prisoners sentenced for cannabis possession.

BULLETS HALT MARCH FOR MARIJUANA Publicly expressing your support of the legalization of marijuana appears to be verboten in Brazil. When activists asked for a regular authorisation for the socalled Marcha da Maconha (march for marijuana), the mayor of Rio de Janeiro refused immediately. This denial gave the organization the idea of getting around the problem by changing the demonstration’s theme to “freedom of expression”. The police officer who pulled him over for driving 8 km/h over the speed limit expected just to give him a speeding ticket. Instead, the strength of the scent given off by the dozens of deodorizers that Mignana had hung all over his car nearly made the police officer faint. Mignana will certainly be sentenced to a few years in prison.
