Where Are You heAded? In the world of design, journeying—in some way, shape or form—is a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along. If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journey—whether it’s as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseas—further encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops.

on your radar: Be sure to keep an eye on Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, British architectural designer John Pawson, and the work coming from the incredible team at SHoP Architects in New York. They’re all having a major moment in design right now. For the design-obsessed: There’s a lot to be excited about in Arizona, but every design enthusiast should make time for a visit to artist James Turrell’s Skyspace: Air Apparent at Arizona State University’s Tempe campus, as well as take a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West and the Grand Canyon. What keeps you curious about design? There’s this constant desire to improve, reinvent, reinterpret and redefine solutions to make a meaningful contribution to our world that I have always identified with. Currently, I’m looking forward to a return of more intelligence and emotional sensitivity in our industry; the creative energy in Arizona right now seems poised to propel us to the next level. ones to watch: I love the landscape architecture coming from the firm of Phoenix-based Allison Colwell and Michele Shelor. The company’s portfolio is filled with beautiful creations spearheaded by these two extremely creative women. Favorite building in arizona: The architecture of the Optima Camelview Village condominiums in Scottsdale is remarkable. I’m so impressed by the way they integrated the building’s different elevations with robust green elements that work like living sculpture. most recent design purchase: I just bought a one-of-a-kind tripod lamp from BDDW in New York. The team took a broken lamp that was in production and 090 / luxe interiors + design
repaired it using bow-and-arrow components. It’s visually interesting and beautifully clever. I’m so glad to have it in my collection.

Favorite plant to work with: I love succulents; every one of them is an accent plant, and when they are paired with other succulents and perennials, the results are absolutely astounding. best place to get lost: The Tucson Botanical Gardens. It’s a nonprofit urban oasis that was recently voted the best secret garden in America. I am the president of the Board of Trustees there, so I am frequently on the grounds witnessing and hearing how visitors have spent the most enjoyable time walking through the gardens. spotlight on: Fors Architecture + Interiors is one of my favorite architectural firms in the city. The company creates lovely places that have such great spatial quality. Don’t miss... Agua Caliente Park. I love watching the reflection of the summer sun on the water there late in the day, especially as a monsoon storm rolls in. It’s incredible. What’s trending? Sustainability is really coming to the forefront and being married with great design in exciting new ways. We are removing existing boundaries and finding new processes for building that allow humanity and wildlife to enjoy the same benefits and resources.

Up next: Our firm recently won a design award from APLD for our local Camino Arizona project. I’m also really looking forward to heading to Germany and working on a residential landscape project we have slated there. what’s trending? I don’t follow or predict trends, but what is evident is the sheer global force of good conceptual work being created today; the world is rife with issues that artists are bringing to our attention.
Go-to summer events: I have two little boys, so the Sunday Evening Concerts at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park are always a huge hit, but the Flagstaff Blues and Brews Festival also ranked pretty high on my list this year.

Having a moment: The architectural team at Rafterhouse has been completely on fire lately. Those guys have such an insane eye for detail and have been nailing the modern Craftsman-style homes that everyone is obsessed with. On your radar: A friend of mine just recently introduced me to the work of local designer Jaimee Rose. 092 / luxe interiors + design
Favorite thing in inventory: I am particularly enamored with the use of brass at the moment. We currently have this incredible rosewood salt-and-pepper cellar with brass spoons at the shop that was handmade by artisans in India. Best place to get lost: My husband and I met at ASU, so we both have a soft spot for Tempe. We love heading to the Tempe Beach Park and then over to Mill Avenue to see what’s new. If we’re feeling really ambitious, we’ll take our bikes out through the campus, as well. It’s one of our favorite pastimes. Can’t get enough of… Melamine dinnerware. The offerings in this category have grown leaps and bounds since it was first introduced to the tabletop industry. We have several collections in the store, and customers are almost always in disbelief when we tell them it’s melamine. shop ’til you drop: I am so excited about what is happening in downtown Phoenix. The new Desoto Central Market is amazing. I love to grab a coffee at Lux Central and then hit all my favorite stores like Growop, Modern Manor, Frances and Changing Hands Bookstore. Ana Wells is the proprietress and creative force behind UrbAna, a home goods and tabletop boutique in Phoenix. She’s an avid campaigner for local manufacturing and an advocate for buying Americanmade furniture and accessories.
Best place to get lost: The Desert Botanical Garden is one of my favorite places to go to unwind. There’s always something new to enjoy or discover there all year-round. On the walls: I just closed an exhibit that included one of my favorite things to enter the gallery to date: It featured a work that is titled The Glass Kiss by Cuban artist Reynier Leyva Novo. The piece is comprised of a set of 70 wine glasses that have each been engraved with the name and visage of either an American or Cuban president. Dream purchase: If money were no object, I would definitely love to own a pair of photographs of the beautiful Countess da Castiglione, from the series taken by Pierre-Louis Pierson in the 1860s. Theirs was a striking collaboration that has proved most enduring. arizona’s most beautiful building: Our new Midtown gallery, of course! It’s a smartly remodeled 1979 building that was originally designed by one of the most celebrated midcentury architects in Phoenix: the incomparable Al Beadle. Recent design splurge: The newest addition to my home is a set of four Naoto Fukasawa Piccola Papilio chairs. They’re cool and sculptural, and they were worth every penny. Lisa Sette is the director and founder of an eponymous contemporary art gallery in Phoenix. She would love to add the title of official taste tester for the Gelateria del Teatro in Rome to her already enviable resume.

Brought together by a love of all things textile, Stacy Waggoner and Kate Reynolds teamed up to create a cutting-edge design studio offering fabrics, rugs and wallpaper motifs from top designers around the world. Now, almost a decade later, Studio Four NYC boasts some of the hottest names in textile design alongside emerging talents, with much of the duo’s success lying in their creative acuity for partnering with artists, innovators and risk-takers. This summer, Studio Four releases three not-to-be-missed lines that fit just that mold. Designer-painter Rebecca Atwood first burst onto the scene—paintbrush in hand—captivating her Instagram audience one bespoke pillow and dreamy watercolor print at a time. Her artistry soon led to a partnership between Atwood and Studio Four, one that has since developed into a blooming design venture as the Cape Cod native sets to release her debut collection of hand-painted and marbleized fabrics with the studio. “Her textiles are so chic and livable,” says Reynolds. “Be on the lookout for her wallpaper collection to launch soon.” Just when you thought leather had nothing new to offer, Brit Kleinman, of Brooklyn’s Avo, enters the field, proving the possibilities have only just begun: Her jaw-dropping block-printed cowhides, branded with bold, artistic patterns and daring geometrics, incorporate a touch of modernity into the timeworn material. “We love leather and the luxury of something that keeps getting better with age,” says Waggoner of the partnership. “Brit is changing the way that people use and experience this textile.” Studio Four’s next debut proves that the art of plaster isn’t lost but rather in a state of renaissance thanks to Celeste Coughlin of Asterisk Designs. This doyenne of Venetian
plaster developed a specialized technique for transcribing waxed plaster onto paper, coining a perfect science to translate this ancient (and tedious) process onto a custom roll of wallpaper. “We have always loved the gorgeous, creamy texture of Venetian plaster walls,” says Waggoner, “and when we met Celeste we knew we were destined for something great to unfold.” With all these exciting collections debuting this season, Studio Four’s Chelsea showroom is the perfect spot to garner inspiration for any and all design endeavors. “Design is a luxury,” says Reynolds. “It should always inspire and never intimidate.”

A HISTORICAL HAVEN IN A SEAPORT CITY, AN ACCLAIMED ATHLETIC CLUB AND A 1930S BEACHSIDE REFUGE ARE ALL GIVEN NEW LIFE BY SOME OF THE BEST NAMES IN DESIGN. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MIMI FAUCETT
An infamous, members-only social club that once entertained the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor is being boldly reimagined by acclaimed architect Richard Meier. Located in the South Florida town of Surfside, the Surf Club will be a visual dialogue between the old and the new, transforming the original 1930s club into a Four Seasons boutique hotel and residences. Meier’s material palette will be simple: Floor-to-ceiling glass will maximize horizontal views of the Atlantic Ocean, while local surfaces, namely flooring of porous coral stone, will detail the exterior. CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHICAGO Founded in 1890 by families of American sports royalty (think Wrigley and Spalding), the Chicago Athletic Association has been a fixture in the Windy City for more than a century. The famed location, originally designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb, has now been revamped into a luxury lifestyle hotel by design duo Roman and Williams. “We were devoted to preserving the character and details of this historic building while creating a new language,” say the designers. The aesthetic maintains the building’s original fireplaces with bas-relief wood carvings, expansive marble staircases and stained glass, yet speaks to classic Americana with vintage artifacts like wooden gym ladders, Victorian-inspired lighting and leather furnishings. chicagoathletichotel.com
THE PALLADIAN HOTEL SEATTLE The Palladian Hotel, established in Seattle in 1910, was named for the Palladian windows that defined the architecture of the time. Today, San Francisco-based designer Nicole Hollis has taken this historically significant building and given it a speakeasy vibe with a sense of humor (pillows printed with Tom Selleck’s portrait, for example). Reclaimed-wood headboards juxtapose crisp, white Frette linens in the guest rooms, while brass accents, velvet upholstery and a tufted-leather check-in characterize the lobby, with the hotel’s original doors standing at the entrance of the gym. “I want my pieces to feel like something you would hand down to the next generation,” explains designer Windsor Smith in reference to her new 40-piece collection for Arteriors. Brimming with furnishings, lighting and home accents in a range of tonal golds, mixed metals and varied marbles, the line flirts between masculine and feminine dichotomies. Case in point: Smith’s Athena sconce (shown here in silver) was inspired by the delicate drop of an earring, while the Atlas sconce (shown in gold)
reveals the same caged form but in a more industrial, geometric outline. “It is through shape and silhouette,” says Smith, “that instant sculpture is evoked.” Laced with neoclassical and GrecoRoman influences, the collection leaves a rich patina in its wake, beckoning centuries past while maintaining modern relevance. “My goal was to reinterpret traditional in a beautiful, lasting way with utilitarian pieces that are meant to be used and not thought of as too precious,” Smith explains. there’s something special brewing in Miami. a city known for its sultry year-round summers and pulsating nightlife has quickly become a seedbed for culturati and starchitects the world over. case in point is the proposed Latin american art Museum, whose imposing layered structure, shown here, by New York- and Mexico city-based FR-ee/Fernando Romero enterprise will house the private collection of art aficionado Gary Nader upon its opening in 2016. Photographer Gray Malin journeys to far and away places, capturing eccentric moments that spark fantasy and wonder, like llamas adorned in balloons amidst Bolivia’s salt flats, or rainbow-hued sheep in Australia. In his new fine art series, Gray Malin at the Parker, he keeps his zest for adventure close to home, shooting at the Parker Palm Springs as exotic animals playfully explore the iconic resort that unites luxury with amusement. Malin put down his camera to discuss the enchanting series, where monkeys are bellhops and giraffes are the guests, temporarily on view at the hotel. With an infectious joie de vivre, he proves the old adage: not all who wander are lost.
How did animals become your muse? I have a deep love for flamingos and penguins and couldn’t stop envisioning them on the property. Working with them and the capuchin monkey, zebra and baby giraffe was so much fun—I wish I could live in this fantasy every day. Any divas on set? We had trainers to direct the crew and myself on how to interact with them to keep them as happy models. Zack the zebra wasn’t much of a fan of the balloons, as they kept popping, but he was a professional and we got the shot. Images of animals in dreamlike settings are one part of your repertoire, but you’re also known for aerial shots of beach scenes. How do you capture the perfect composition? When I’m in the air, people and objects begin to stand out and
form patterns below. Once I’m up there, everything magically comes together visually for me and I’m able to capture the natural art that is being created below in the distance. What’s the most daring stunt you’ve done to get the perfect shot? Standing on a 10-foot inflatable boat in the waters of Antarctica, shooting beach balls up against icebergs the size of a skyscraper that could break apart at any moment. It was the thrill of a lifetime. You’ve said your favorite part of your job is getting to see the world. Can you offer a piece of travel advice to those filled with the same wanderlust? If you’re ever in Bhutan, you must visit the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of the country’s most sacred religious sites. Built in the 8th century on the side of a cliff, it is something of another world.

Your new fine art series focuses on exotic animals in unexpected places. What inspired the collection? Since living in Los Angeles, I’ve always enjoyed the quick escape to the desert, and the Parker Palm Springs has been my longtime favorite hotel there. This was a chance to let my imagination run wild, and apparently it ran right into a menagerie of wild animals enjoying the hotel with me.

global vision as she travels the world, british designer tracey boyd draws inspiration for her new namesake furniture collection.

“It’s fantastic to drift and just let a place wash over you,” designer Tracey Boyd says of her approach to travel. Until recently, her chances to do just that were rare. As the creative director of the coveted fashion label Boyd, she was constantly in motion, creating edgy yet feminine clothing. Her singular vision—one collection featured fleece ball gowns—won her a New Generation Designer of the Year honor at the 2000 Rover British Fashion Awards, along with a devoted international following, but little time for anything else. “When I moved into a more organic way of designing, I decided to go on trips for two or three months,” she says. “I wanted to go deeper.” This change of focus yielded Aboydbazaar, a collection of clothing and accessories influenced by her biggest passions: life, travel, art and fashion.
Since then, Boyd has been busy soaking up the world’s sights and sounds, be it the modern shapes of Singapore’s skyline or the traditional beading practices in Penang. India remains a favorite destination and a constant source of inspiration. “It’s such a place of contrast,” says Boyd. “When I’m there, I have too many ideas. I have to file them away and then come home to make sense of them.” With the luxury of time, the designer can now absorb the lessons from her travels and incorporate them into her work, such as in her latest venture, Boyd, a line of furniture inspired by her journeys and currently available through Anthropologie. “I’m obsessed with finding out how things are done but looking at them in a contemporary way,” she says. “Then, I put my own spin on them.”
Next on Boyd’s itinerary? She’s heading to the U.S., where she’ll launch Boyd with Resource Decor at High Point Market in October. Imbued with color and texture, the line mixes modern and traditional shapes in materials ranging from lacquer and metal to concrete and shells. Before that, however, she’ll pack a bag with a sketch pad, a few of her Aboydbazaar shirts, a collection of black and white beads and a beloved Dries Van Noten scarf and head to Puglia, in Southern Italy, to a convent that was reinvented as a hotel. “It’s filled with tribal art, textiles and miles of books on art, sculpture and furniture. It’s like having a holiday in the most fabulous library with incredible food and beautiful gardens,” says Boyd. “It’s a mixture of work and play and sums up my ideal way to travel.”

The OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale, slated for completion in the summer of 2016, will boast three stories of underwater marvels right in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, making it the soon-to-be-largest outpost of its kind in the Southwest. Thanks to innovative design by Deutsch Architecture Group, the aquarium will feature a series of captivating acrylic tunnels and glass elevators that will allow guests to descend through the building surrounded by complete 360-degree underwater views. THE MAKER Building beautiful things by hand has always been second nature for furniture designer and craftsman Cody Carpenter, who has become well-known for his seductive but ever-practical mixed-media masterpieces, from kitchen and bathroom cabinetry to handsomely rendered concrete furniture. “I was the kid going on architectural tours or setting up private lessons with local artists,” says Carpenter. Here, we talked with the Phoenix native about designing for utility and his one true love: concrete. codydesigns.com Describe your aesthetic. All of my designs are basically an exercise in marrying form and function. I build mostly furnishings and components for architecture, so everything must be practical. My challenge is to design within my clients’ taste and the functionalities of the intended use. What’s your process? I’m completely old school. Everything starts on paper: first conceptual scribbles to get the idea out and then refining until the design feels right. I’ll make slight alterations throughout the fabrication process in the studio, as well, as all of my pieces are constantly evolving.

Favorite materials: Concrete, steel and wood, first and foremost. They give me a great foundation for crafting distinctive design. I especially love concrete, though, for its adaptability. It is completely customizable in terms of its color, texture and finish. What do you hope your work provokes? When people see my pieces, I want them to feel the amount of time that has gone into each handcrafted item—that the work has been made by someone with an appreciation for and a love of details. I’d love for them to have a feeling akin to walking into a great piece of architecture for the first time.

BON BOUTIQUE When did you open? We officially invited guests into our new location in Tucson on 760 South Stone Avenue in March 2015. Why Tucson? The desert is a great place to work; there is plenty of space and time, which fosters an environment that’s both collaborative and supportive. What products do you offer? We have a full range of home, garden and clothing items available at the shop—anything with a nostalgic sensibility but that’s been put together in a modern way. We love John Derian and Japanese textile brand Fog Linen Work, as well as classic labels like Levi’s Vintage Clothing and Armor-Lux. Plus, there’s always a rotating selection of Bolivian frazadas that are perfect for the desert. Share your concept for the store’s redesign. We have such great natural light in Tucson, so we wanted to make it a priority and bring it in with our beautiful skylight. From there, we crafted a blank canvas: white walls, a white ceiling and concrete floors that showcase our lovely textiles and cacti. bon-boutique.com
9 a.m. Start the day at Shed for breakfast—its architecture by Jensen Architects is beautiful, and it carries wonderful items for the house and garden. It also serves a custom blend made by my favorite local coffee house, Flying Goat Coffee.
10 a.m. After breakfast, check out the Harry and Maggie Wetzel Native Plant Garden. It’s a tiny hideaway reclaimed from an old parking lot with more than 80 species of native plants each grouped by habitat. 10:30 a.m. Hit the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market. Most of the produce is grown within 10 miles of the market, so it’s a great place to get the freshest Dry Creek peaches. I also always get my veggie starters here. 11:30 a.m. Take an art walk along Grove Street on the Foss Creek Pathway on your way to the main square in Healdsburg. It’s sponsored by the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation, and it’s beyond lovely.
12 p.m. Next, visit the Plaza. It’s our main square, and it has some wonderful art and design destinations, including my favorite: Saint Dizier Home. The store features local, handmade metal furniture—from tables of all shapes and sizes to beds, stools and shelving. Artist Aletha Soulé also displays her amazing wine country-inspired ceramics here. 1 p.m. Stop for lunch at Barndiva. It’s one of my favorite spots in Healdsburg and highlights the best ingredients from Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The chef, Ryan Fancher, has worked with Thomas Keller at The French Laundry in Yountville and Per Se in New York. All of the food is superb; plus, my fabric—Prima Alpaca—is used on an upholstered wall here, which provides a showcase for their rotating selection of artwork. 2 p.m. A visit to wine country would not be complete without a wine tasting. I love Copain Wines, which has a gorgeous view and interesting nontraditional wine varieties, and J Vineyards & Winery does great wine and food pairings. 4 p.m. Head to the Farmhouse Inn for a spa treatment. The spa is located in the inn’s former carriage house and incorporates ingredients from the surrounding land, such as Spring Forest honey, heirloom cider apples and fresh herbs, into their services. 7 p.m. Leave your dinner plans in the hands of Michelin-starred chef Steve Litke. His menu is inspired by the diversity of California cuisine, featuring Mexican and Italian influences.

On Trend Synergy: While contemporary is a predominant design style, fusing looks is gaining popularity, such as modern interior designs in retro styles; black and white in geometric patterns; and organic materials in a space with pops of color. Variant hues: All shades of red are in, as are many shades of green. A resurgence of yellow brass is also noteworthy. A new kind of door: Pocket doors are huge on the list, from small spaces in New York to more industrial or rustic spaces. The best of brass: Traditional polished brass works well for the classicists, whereas a more transitional setting might call for a satin brass. A note on brass: Like everything in fashion, the popularity of brass ebbs and flows; however, it is less a trend and more a classic mainstay.

From the beginning, the ambition was to improve the kitchen. good fortune came to founder Friedemir Poggenpohl in finding craftspeople and designers to execute and expound upon his sleek, utilitarian aesthetic. Today, Poggenpohl is an industry innovator, from sustainable building methodology to fresh concepts in materials and finishes to ergonomic cabinetry. What Poggenpohl created more than a century ago is the kitchen of today: devoid of the superfluous, aesthetically modern and unabashedly centered on functionality. To further educate about the very latest in kitchen design, Poggenpohl luminaries I-ching Ueng, san Francisco showroom manager and designer, and Luiza Bajkowska, New York city Poggenpohl designer, shared a few of the most alluring new looks in the kitchen. “White gloss finishes seem to be dominating; clients want clean lines and the least amount of busyness—the opposite of the outside world, where they are being overloaded with information and clutter,” Bajkowska says. In addition to high-gloss and matte finishes, as well as handless design (a technology that speaks to the clean-lined Poggenpohl aesthetic), Ueng notes a general paradigm shift in the kitchen. “More and more people in the United states are following what has been true in Europe for many years, which is that kitchens are viewed as products, not just building materials,” she says. Ueng makes an interesting point, which might be taken a touch further: kitchens are viewed as art, not just products.

The Côte d’Azur has lured individuals of the art and design worlds for centuries, and it would appear that its most recent persuasions over fashion and interiors have us once again longing for a deep breath of that fresh coastline air. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg looked to the French Riviera for inspiration when creating her painterly Spring/Summer 2015 RTW collection, giving nods to Matisse and Picasso, frequenters of this seaside escape, through fun floral patterns displayed on wispy silks, while San Francisco interior designer Antonio Martins evoked a touch of coastal style when fashioning this impressive haphazard-tiled wall, exuding ancient references brought into modern day with a striking sideboard reminiscent of a coral reef. At this rate, we’re ready to grab our passports and say bonjour to laidback living at its best.

Many mistake the fact that simplistic design requires less effort, but quite to the contrary; it’s the simple silhouettes and uncomplicated structures that change the way design is perceived and experienced. It is this philosophy that dominates the persona of our next influential city: Copenhagen. Blonde wood, open shapes and brushed-gold finishes are constant qualities synonymous with Denmark’s capital. Barber & Osgerby illustrate the art of this finesse in the Hula stool, which by appearances is seemingly straightforward, but upon further investigation, offers itself as either fixed seating or a rocking stool. But perhaps the father of modern Danish design, Finn Juhl, whose colorful sideboard is shown, sums up quintessential Copenhagen style best of all with his clean-lined furnishings. “One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects,” he says, “but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones.”

What would you say to those afraid of using color in a kitchen? don’t be! even if you’re a little hesitant to paint all of your cabinets a certain shade, you can bring in color in small ways for a big impact. a hint of hue on your backsplash or barstools can go a long way.

What went into fabricating such an understated yet striking pool? The 3-acre plot of land had eroded over the years, offering us a blank slate to create architectural elements that would define usable exterior spaces. We wanted the pool to be a natural extension of the home’s spa-like feel. Instrumental in creating that was the decision to remove the original kidney-shaped pool, which was in need of repair and was also too close to the house. Now the pool invites one outdoors, reconnecting its owners with the land.
What inspired the color palette? The denim-colored glass tile and the deep blue hue of the pool plaster echo the clear Tucson sky and visually cool the exterior space, while the terrazzo-like plaster in the pool offers a dramatic and refreshing focus. The overlapping planes of plaster and tile, together with the strong Arizona sun, create depth and shadows. The result is the ideal setting in which to entertain. Tell me more about the uneven walls and seemingly floating bridges. Adding functionality and drama, the layering of spaces and walls creates privacy while still connecting to the trees and sky beyond. The floating concrete bridges link the main deck to a master bedroom and linear outdoor fireplace. We love the subtle tension as the bridges reach out to each other yet do not touch. In addition, a blue-tiled wall rises out of the water, terminating the pool’s axial view from the indoor living spaces—an artful composition seen from inside the house.

This space feels like a European retreat. What was your inspiration? We created a home rich in Mediterranean style, reminiscent of what you would find on the shores of Lake Como. The design was derived by researching estate homes from the early 1900s in Southern California and Arizona. The end result is the perfect amalgamation of beautiful architecture well-adapted to the Sonoran Desert environment, with plenty of shaded areas, limestone columns and the custom wrought iron that I designed.
Walk me through your design process when dreaming up such a romantic space. The goal was to design an outdoor area that would not only house a floral display of roses and shrubbery, but also provide a home to sculptures the client had collected during travels. I wanted to create a space that promoted indoor-outdoor connectivity and a sense of relaxation. The overall design was choreographed in such a way as to allow for intimate gathering amidst stunning views of the sweeping mountainside.
What do you love most about this space? This area draws you in and you can’t help but pause and enjoy the comfort that it bestows. Along with the shading of the trees, the fountain and surrounding walls create a microclimate cooling effect, and the lush garden sheltered by the main villa protects you from the harsh Arizona sun. This garden lends such a sense of symmetry and a pleasing balance of architecture and landscape design, all providing the perfect visual alignment of the view.

What was your approach for this space? The client wanted an outdoor living room, complete with ample shade and a space to watch television and entertain large groups. It was important that the furnishings stay simple in order to create a harmonious blend with the proportions of the architecture, while also being able to withstand the harsh heat of the Arizona sun. The result is a generous area with clean lines and spaces to enjoy a drink, take a dip in the pool, or cool off beneath the ramada.
Why did you decide to go with such a quiet, muted palette? We wanted to create an intimate European countryside retreat, reminiscent of staying in an understated resort. Mimicking the European design of the main house, the ramada features the same materials found in the home’s interior—neutral, linen-like fabrics beneath a large, tented ceiling—that all lend to an open, airy feel. The space has such an intimacy about it while also offering unobstructed views of Camelback Mountain.
What are your go-to outdoor design tips? I always like to design any outdoor area with a large, oversize coffee table because it can never hurt to have a place for cocktails and plenty of hors d’oeuvres. In this space, for instance, we customdesigned the slab and base for the table, which brought a certain antique feel to the space. I also always ensure that my fabric choices are durable and washable, to stand up against the outdoor elements. These pieces provide so many options to enjoy the outdoors.

Share some exciting trends in landscape architecture and outdoor living. right now, we’re seeing a lot of outdoor kitchens, fire pits and water features. none are new, necessarily, but the demand keeps rising. also, low-maintenance plantings, indigenous flora and organic gardening are huge now. best way to integrate water features and pools into verdant surroundings? in a formal garden, lining up the water feature on a critical axial line or controlling a hierarchy of sights and sounds with its location may prove optimal. using strong geometry in the design of the feature will help, as well. landscapeartistry.net

Where did the idea to create your all-weather pieces come from? my brother and business partner, aaron Jones, dreamed it up when he was doing a design/build project in a chilly backyard. our pieces give you the toasty feeling of being in a hot tub but without having to get wet.
How do you create your shapely silhouettes? We use the human form as our inspiration, with comfort being key. When your body anticipates that something will be comfortable, the piece becomes naturally inviting.
What are some of your favorite materials to work with? We’re very intrigued by the cast-able medium. it is amazing and versatile and allows us to explore more ergonomic and interesting forms.

I
t all started with a single phone call to architect Mark Candelaria, who had designed several houses in a development north of Scottsdale where an Ohio family intended to build their second home. “My houses don’t have a look—they have a feel,” says Candelaria. In this case, the clients wanted to feel as if they were living in a rustic Mediterranean farmhouse. As luck would have it, the architect runs annual tours of the Italian countryside, and when he showed his clients pictures of the 19th-century farmhouses in Umbria where he often stays, the couple were instantly drawn to the craggy stone houses with terra-cotta roofs, beamed ceilings and tiled courtyards. “We clicked right away,” Candelaria says. The husband then commissioned builder Anthony Salcito. In another bit of serendipity, he happened to live across the street and had built many homes in the neighborhood. This was the first project Candelaria and Salcito would work together on, but both had collaborated for years with designer David Michael Miller and landscape designer Jeff Berghoff, the final players to join the team. The three-year project began to take shape when Candelaria and his clients walked the property to scope out the best vistas. “At ground level the views were just so-so,” says the architect, who then brought in scaffolding so the owners could see the vantage point from about five feet up. “At that height the views just exploded and we positioned everything to capture them.” Utilizing 3D software and Google Earth, the architect superimposed the evolving design on the property and drew each window and doorway to perfectly frame the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the emerald green of a nearby golf course and, come sunset, the twinkle of the city lights. “This house is like an octopus,” Candelaria says of the sprawling home with multiple wings and connecting courtyards. “It has all kinds of arms and these cool little outdoor spaces all around the house.” Candelaria’s approach resonated with the landscape designer. “The house is separated and pulled apart,

which created all kinds of views and areas for me to work with,” says Berghoff, whose landscape plan started with a 100-year-old ironwood tree salvaged from a local property to be the centerpiece for the cobblestone driveway. “I picked it just for this project because it is the desert interpretation of the olive tree so prominent in Italy,” he says. The rest of the landscaping was calibrated to start outward, with native plants on the property’s periphery blending seamlessly into the desert beyond. The plantings start to become more vibrant closer to the house with roses, lavender, salvia and bougainvillea, the latter espaliered onto the walls. Even more color blooms from groupings of antique planters in the courtyard—layers that soften all that stone. “When you use old relics, such as these basins and pots, it really makes the house feel like it has a soul,” he says. Meanwhile, Salcito, whose firm owns the company that frames all the houses he builds, made the interior beams and exposed woodwork speak the same language. “A house like this is really part of the reason we started a framing company,” he says, noting that the Douglas-fir beams were hand-hewn on site. “We achieved the desired weathered look that the interior designer was going for.” In turn, Miller formulated the interiors so they would enhance the architecture and landscape rather than stand out on their own. Warm, buttery colors and subtle earth tones, for instance, were chosen so that the rugs, window treatments and furnishings would echo the hues of the plaster, wood and stone. “I wanted it to be distractionfree—a restful palette where all the colors harmonize and everything melds together,” he explains. Also paramount was the clients’ desire for a look that was casual and low-maintenance—important when you have three nearly grown sons and a large network of friends and extended family that frequently visit. “They didn’t want pretentious or fancy or formal,” Miller says. “They wanted the house to reflect how they lived, so furnishings needed to be practical in addition to being well-made and well-styled.” To that end, Miller selected furnishings from such brands as Paul Ferrante, Rose Tarlow Melrose House and Dessin Fournir because their pieces had the right scale and profile to fit the period sensibilities of an old Umbrian farmhouse. In most cases, the designer also opted for reproduction antiques and rugs instead of the real thing so they would hold up well for the busy family. Says Miller: “We wanted to have the effect of antique and age without our clients having to live with such delicate things.” Two years later, Candelaria says the house feels every bit like a luxurious version of the farmhouses he continues to visit in Italy, while Miller reports that it’s become more the family’s primary home than their property in Ohio. Berghoff adds that the landscape has now matured, making the home a beacon within its desert surroundings. “It’s like a mini-resort,” he says. “It’s just paradise, really.” luxe interiors + design / 229

he cool, transformable and imperfect beauty of concrete isn’t something everyone would call inspiring. But for Brandon Gore—owner of Tempe-based Gore Design Company and Hard Goods—it is endlessly stimulating. “We live in a world of faux materials, but concrete is real,” says Gore, who over the years has spent over 35,000 hours mastering the material, created countless concrete sinks and countertops, and has even given a TED Talk on the subject. Most recently, the designer launched a furniture line constructed entirely of concrete, steel and wood featuring such functional items as tables, chairs and ottomans. The line’s signature ethos of simplicity and reinterpretation—in the structure, silhouettes and ergonomics—is an homage to form and function. “Great design is the least amount of design possible,” says Gore. “Every aspect should serve a purpose.” Self-taught, Gore counts concrete master Buddy Rhodes, whom he studied with in San Francisco, as a major influence and credits Phoenix architect Eddie Jones for his foray into the world of sustainable and environmental design. One summer, the designer unwittingly biked past the architect’s home, which he always stopped to admire every day. “Then, one evening while at a bookstore, I realized it was his house when I saw it on the cover of a magazine,” he says. “It was made of rammed earth and filled with sustainable finishes, including concrete countertops. Something sparked within me, and I knew sustainable construction was my path.” Gore’s ideals remain at the core of each and every one of his creations, including his newest venture: Conservatory of Craft, an e-commerce business that offers tutorials and advice on all areas of craft from concrete to metal and woodworking. The intent of this concept is to make great design and processes attainable and achievable in a way where anyone can tackle meaningful projects and take pride in the finished result. “I remember what it was like the first time I de-molded a concrete sink; it was like Christmas morning when you were five,” he says. “Everyone should experience the satisfaction of crafting their own environment.”

To remedy the situation, the couple hired builder Nancy Brunkhorst after touring several of her projects. She in turn introduced them to architect Matthew Thomas and also provided suggestions for an interior designer—which included DeCesare, who they promptly hired. “I knew immediately that Caroline would be able to pinpoint our desired style,” says the wife. That style was quickly defined as classic traditional with a French twist, but “We didn’t want super-fussy or gold gilt,” says the wife. In response, the team delineated a plan that was equal parts remove, redo and renew, and that started with the elimination of the porte cochere. “When it was removed and the front entry became more dominant on the elevation, the home became a more authentic version of a French Colonial Revival,” says Thomas. In a similar spirit, whole sections of millwork, along with large expanses of wallcoverings—such as the mauve brocade that sheathed the living room—ended up on the chopping block. “All of the cabinets, millwork and trim were removed, redesigned and replaced,” says Brunkhorst, who also oversaw the renovation of the central staircase—an

W
hen a couple returned to Arizona after years of living in Michigan, it was the generous acreage and spectacular sunset views of Camelback Mountain that drew them to this Paradise Valley home. And while its enviable surroundings is what first appealed to the couple, the residence also boasted enough old-world charm to support their Francophile leanings. “We always wanted a French-style house, and the exterior of this one looked like something from the French countryside,” says the wife. The home, however, did not come without challenges. With its oversize porte cochere blocking the entry, shuttered windows obscuring the natural light, and kitchen cabinets sporting a shade of blue that went out of vogue more than two decades ago, no one questioned that the house was in desperate need of a remodel. “It was like this 1980s time capsule,” says designer Caroline Tyler DeCesare. “It was basically a dark box with overscaled rooms and very narrow hallways that hadn’t been touched in 30 years.”

awkward curving structure that was squared off at the top with bookcases. After salvaging just the skeleton of the stairs, an elegant, swooping wrought-iron railing was then added. For the surrounding plaster walls, the builder called on her crew of old-world plaster craftsmen to supply the beautifully rounded surfaces. “The unique, hand-troweled two-plaster technique is always soft on the eye,” she adds. To make the house more livable, Thomas opened up the isolated kitchen to the family room and moved the dining room—originally tucked under and behind stairs—to the front of the house and closer to the mountain views. Then, with the room rearranging complete, DeCesare and project manager Kelsey Hunzeker got busy establishing a balance between formal and informal styles, a look more closely tailored to the needs of the homeowners.
Bergéres sporting printed silk, for instance, signal the entrance to the formal living room, where, visible through a new arch in the entry, are a set of shelter-arm sofas in a linen-velvet. In the dining room, a pair of outmoded mirrored curio cabinets made way for the owners’ Habersham reproduction antique cabinets. DeCesare then added a dark walnut table surrounded by chairs wearing cut-velvet brocade on the front and a light-colored Fortuny stripe on the back to provide a fine counterpoint. In contrast, the family room’s centerpiece is a cushy oversize sectional backed by a console table comprising a long wood plank and two metal sawhorses. “The day before the install I was out hunting for some final items and I saw this monstrously long table and thought it would make the perfect casual statement for the room,” says DeCesare. luxe interiors + design / 253

French doors were added to the main house for access to the resurfaced bluestone patio on the front side of the house, where wicker furnishings from Restoration Hardware surround a fire pit. Taking informal to yet another level is the game room, where the dark wood beams inject a rustic feel. Formerly the television room, the central hangout was reshaped to strengthen the indoor-outdoor connection. “Before, the incredible mountain view was totally neglected,” says Thomas, who added sliding doors that open to the back, as well as French doors on the opposite wall to maintain the formality of the front elevation. When it came time to update the terrain, landscape designer Jeff Berghoff stepped in. “The property had been in various states of deferred maintenance for years,” he says. “But there was a lot of existing vegetation that only needed to be trimmed and reshaped. So rather than scrape and rebuild, we opted to enhance the existing landscape.” To the original pool area, Berghoff added a ramada and a spa, and then established a walking path where the owners can stroll to the outskirts of the property amidst the mesquite, ironwood and other native trees he
planted. “As you move closer to the house, it becomes more classical, with retaining walls that create panels of lawn more in keeping with the French theme,” he says. On both sides of the property Berghoff designed fire features intended to draw the owners and their guests to the outdoors—and the plan worked. The fire pit on the front side of the house, for instance, has now become a favorite evening gathering spot to watch the sunsets, adding to the list of changes that contributed to the successful refreshment of the property. As the architect notes: “We were able to redefine the entire look of the house and elevate it to the standards of both the owners and the neighborhood.” As for the homeowners—a couple who pride themselves on having a welcoming home—this one hit the mark. “The house is casual and comfortable yet has the classic traditional style we like so much,” says the wife. “Because that’s how we are as a couple.”
A freestanding tub with views to the outdoors defines the sumptuous master bathroom. The honed marble floors, bathtub and tub filler are all from Waterworks. The Colefax & Fowler valance was fabricated by Dressed to Kill Custom Drapery; the metal shelving is from Bungalow.

n opening night of Garth Johnson’s premiere exhibition for the ASU Art Museum’s Ceramics Research Center, the curator was fired up. “I wanted to provoke my audience to have an intense feeling that connected them to the subject matter,” he says about “Recorded Matter: Ceramics in Motion,” featuring work by 11 young artists who use video as a seamless part of their artistic process. In some cases, the participants are seen in the videos destroying their own creations, and if this sounds moldbreaking, all the better for Johnson—who “likes to color outside the lines.” Johnson sees the Tempe-based center, one of two in the nation to focus exclusively on contemporary studio ceramics, as the perfect venue for bringing a new generation of artists, museumgoers and collectors to the table, and central to that is his ability to launch thoughtprovoking exhibitions. “When I get an idea for a show, first I let it percolate, and then when it seems right, I contact the artist and start talking about the work,” he says. “I always have a lot of irons in the fire.” Currently on the front burner is “Statement Piece,” an exhibit that pairs the work of Erik Gronborg and Ehren Tool, pushing the envelope and moving ceramics into the psychological and political arenas: Danish-born Gronborg uses his plates and bowls to provide a commentary on contemporary American culture, while Tool, a 1991 Gulf War veteran, creates cups that depict graphic anti-war iconography. “The artists are from two different generations; Gronborg is 84 and Tool is 45,” says Johnson, “yet the show is a dialogue between shared political and community engagement.”
“I want to provoke my audience to have an intense feeling that connects them to the subject matter.” In addition to organizing the exhibitions, Johnson’s curatorial duties include meeting with artists and donors, writing academic articles, touring museums and galleries, and making acquisitions for the center’s 4,500-piece collection. “I’m one of the biggest clay nerds on the planet,” he says. “I’m still pinching myself that I managed to find my way into a job where I can spend all of my time enthusing about ceramics.”

W
hen it comes to designing the perfect home for her clients, architect and designer Catherine Hayes is willing to move mountains—or at least parts of them. And she did just that while working on a new Arizona residence for a husband and wife looking to change their lifestyle. No strangers to the building process, the couple had previously owned eight other homes in various styles, however this time around, they sought something smaller yet still highly sophisticated. “I started looking at ways we could live differently,” says the wife, “including ways of living in less square footage.” This new design would represent an about-face for the owners both in terms of style and attitude. The owners’ search for an architect to help answer their conceptual concerns led to Hayes. Her reputation as an explorer of many styles and of having a keen deftness for answering a client’s lifestyle needs and aesthetic sensibilities immediately won the wife over. “Once I met Cathy I knew she was the one,” she says of their instant connection. So, when Hayes presented a plan for a 3,600-square-foot house built around a courtyard, her well-traveled clients were delighted. “I was coincidentally always trying to draw courtyard homes while traveling,” says the wife. Since the locale in question backed up to a mountain, the house would end up being just 10 feet away, with its windows, doors and patios looking out onto the face of it. “Because of this, we meticulously feathered the mountain back to both stabilize the face and bring out the natural beauty of the hillside’s colors, shadows and shapes,” says Hayes, who teamed up with builder Greg Hunt to deal with the challenging terrain. “The foundation and luxe interiors + design / 269

topography were essentially one and the same,” says Hunt. “Where required, we drilled all of the foundation footings into the mountain’s base.” Meanwhile, they salvaged every piece of rock for later use and set out to design a flat-roofed structure that would sit low into its surroundings. Fashioned from glass, steel, rock and plaster, the home’s design called for a generously proportioned living, dining and kitchen area, as well as a master bedroom, guest bedrooms, a small library for the husband and an office for the wife—all assembled around a lushly landscaped interior courtyard. Floor-to-ceiling, operable glass walls that define the outdoor areas allow light to flow through the public spaces, while the openings are free of the visual distraction of thresholds underfoot. Although a small detail, it’s among the reasons for the resulting clean aesthetic. “There is no room for error in a contemporary home,”
says Hunt. “The architecture is deceptively simple, but unforgiving in terms of quality and expectation.” When the time came to select furnishings, the owners decided it was best to start over. “All of our old furniture was better suited for a larger house,” says the wife. “But this space called for clean yet comfortable lines.” Hayes and her team, who were also responsible for the home’s interior design, began by establishing a palette that connected to the colors in the mountain by employing a cashmere hue on all of the walls. “The choice was made early on to have the architecture be a warm, natural color inside and out in order to have the building planes create a calm and sophisticated composition,” says Hayes. This tone is first established in the foyer, where glass walls complement the warm wood floors and ceiling. In the living and dining areas, luxuriously upholstered furnishings feature fabrics selected to mimic the colors

of the desert when in bloom, such as palo verde yellow, Texas mountain laurel blue and sage green. Mindful of the outdoors, two leather Minotti armchairs in the living room swivel to take in the views, while the master bedroom’s gossamer-upholstered platform bed looks out to a line of perfectly pruned Bradford pear trees. The indoor-outdoor connection continues in the simple yet polished kitchen, which boasts windows along the east and south walls that face a terrace decorated with a black granite water feature, long sofas and a dining table custom-designed to seat 14 guests. The homeowners’ art collection was then integrated into the interiors, with one of their favorite pieces hanging in the foyer. The piece seems to float in front of the glass wall overlooking the courtyard, while the back of the painting is faced with a custom screen in a subtle pattern of olive leaves that seamlessly blends with the olive tree within the courtyard.
The courtyard is where landscape architect Steven Vollmer tailored the plantings to various settings, including the creation of a micro-garden of swordtail ferns. “We layered shades of green for a cooling effect,” says Vollmer, who also introduced more resilient plantings on the perimeter of the home. Farther from the house, agaves and succulents hold their own against the striking mountainside, which the architect shaped into a sculptural façade in perfect harmony with its site. The rock material removed earlier appears throughout the space. “All of the rock inside and outside the house was taken directly from the mountain,” says Hayes. The resulting effect grounds the residence, making it feel as if it belongs exactly where it is. And the owners also feel they are where they belong, recognizing that out of all their homes, this is their favorite. “It’s the best,” the wife says, “and it will, most likely, be the last.” luxe interiors + design / 277
