a new view... The Tweak: it’s an ever-present verb for those of us in the business of design. Our days are consumed with upgrades and installs; recasts and transformations; alterations, punctuations and slightly-to-the-rights. A decade ago we began publishing Luxe Interiors + Design, and for this celebratory 10-year anniversary, we’ve done some refurbishing of our own with a refresh of our magazine pages. We’ve reassembled its parts in a way that makes for a better read. We’ve introduced more robust feature stories, revitalized the typography, and clarified the navigation of our departments. You’ll find news and discoveries for the season in “Radar,” the latest décor and product introductions in “Market,” and inspiring ideas for the home in “The Look.” Design never stands still, and we’ve certainly evolved over the past decade. What hasn’t changed much, however, is the mission of our magazine: to inform and inspire, cultivate ideas, and connect design enthusiasts with design talent. I have my eye on: Tom Dixon; his work on the Mondrian London just blew me away. Maison&Objet named him the designer of the year in 2014, and he introduced a line of signature barware as a surprise for the show. It was every bit as sleek and sexy as you’d imagine it would be, and I’m still waiting for someone to gift me the entire set for my birthday! What’s happening in landscape design? Concrete is coming back in a big way. There is such a demand from our clients as of late who desire a modern aesthetic with some heft and permanence. Coming up for boxhill: We just did a product launch of our first line of fire pits, and we are in the process of launching our sister store called We Love Firepits. For the garden-obsessed: The W Retreat & Spa in Vieques, Puerto Rico, has forever changed the way I view landscape architecture. It’s such an extreme level of design that is completely integrated and so inspiring. Landscape architect Elizabeth Przygoda-Montgomery is the principal of Boxhill Design. If she were given $20,000 to spend on anything, she wouldn’t be able to resist buying as much brocade and brass as she could get her hands on…and a fringed shawl owned by Stevie Nicks.

What’s on your horizon lately? Expanding my Race Point collection; I’m working on a coffee table and console based on the architectural experiments of homes by famous Bauhaus and Modernist designers who lived in Cape Cod during the 1930s through ’80s, including Serge Chermayeff, Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? French interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot is having a huge moment. I’m also smitten with Hervé Van Der Straeten’s products.
Add to your agenda: The Modern Phoenix Home Tour in early April and SMoCA Mix: Street Art Moves Inside on May 2. I missed Keith Haring’s exhibit—“The Political Line”—this past winter at the de Young museum in San Francisco, but it will also be on view at the Kunsthalle of the Hypo Cultural Foundation in Munich, Germany, through August 30. Covetable recent purchases: A bone-china chandelier by Jeremy Cole. What trend do you want to see fade away? I’m looking forward to a cleaner approach when designing living spaces: less fussiness, fewer materials and fewer design periods all mashed up into one project.

The art-collecting product designer is actually a frustrated architect inside, and would love to design a home from the ground up.

competition, which looks to create a new master plan for El Presidio Park. The park sits at the center of the civic buildings and in between the city’s museums and cultural centers. It’s interesting to see what is effective at bringing people together and different ways of using public space.

For the architecture-obsessed: Marfa, Texas, is a must-see for any and all architects. I have yet to go, unfortunately, but it’s definitely on my list. having a moment: In general, cities that are redefining themselves as pedestrian/transit/bicycle-oriented places. There is so much to be learned from the successes (and failures) of those efforts.

Your go-to shops: John Brooks’ showroom for furnishings and fabrics; the Lisa Sette Gallery at their new home in central Phoenix is so minimal and inspiring; and the Bulthaup showroom in Scottsdale—as well the Carl Hansen & Son annex next door—rivals any other that I have seen in the United States.
On tap for the season: The next big exhibition we have coming up at the museum is “From New York to New Mexico: Masterworks of American Modernism from the Vilcek Foundation Collection,” which opens June 5.

An Exploration into the
Jeweler’s Creative Process + Passion for Gemstones The beauty of Scott Gauthier’s work lies in both the journey and the destination. Handmade in the truest sense, every piece by the jeweler is brought to life in his Scottsdale-based design studio and store, where time-honored techniques converge with breakthrough designs. “I want people to think of our work more as an art form than a typical jewelry form; and so from the very first day, I’ve handmade every single piece that we sell,” enthuses the self-taught jeweler. Citing architecture and nature as rich sources of inspiration—a modern building, a sculptural rock, a deeply saturated sunset—Gauthier’s work is modern, streamlined and elegant. Through meticulous stone selection, detailing and craftsmanship, hallmarks for which the jeweler’s rigorous processes are known, Gauthier has worked tirelessly to be at the top of his profession. “Every piece is a sculpture,” he says. “When I create, I think as if I was a miniature person, looking up at the ring, sitting inside of it and seeing what it would look like from every angle. Most jewelry is designed so that when you lay your hand flat, and you look straight down, that’s your story. My story starts there and then goes a lot deeper.” An innate love for gemstones has helped define Gauthier’s life and shape his design philosophy. “The journey always begins with a stone, always,” he asserts. “I have a vault filled with loose stones that I’ve been collecting. ELISA GOMEZ MIXED MEDIA Whether it’s the energetic rhythms of an upbeat salsa number or the transportive sounds of a classical opus, all music moves Elisa Gomez in an indescribable way. The Austin-based abstract painter translates this feeling to canvas using brushes, palette knives or even her bare hands. The graffiti effect in Am I Free From This Dream #2, left, is a result of her fast-paced strokes and layered textures; it's part of her series with local composer Walter Nichols—a visual portrayal of his musical arrangements. TROY SIMMONS CONCRETE Troy Simmons is so captivated by Brutalist architecture that he translates the vernacular to canvas, juxtaposing raw concrete against sleek pigments (see Durchbruch, left, shown vertically, and Serendipity, below). SARAH RASKEY MIXED MEDIA The Swarovski crystals in Sarah Raskey’s 24kt Gold and Glamour, above, is a good indication of the high fashion that permeates her work. The elegant result is a far cry from the mad-scientist process that gets her there: picture materials spilled over, others set on fire, and power tools strewn about her Chicago studio. “I love the dance that takes place among art, fashion and self-expression,” says Raskey, who, as an art therapist, helps others find healing through creativity. “I want viewers to feel that my art encourages the human spirit.” Raskey will be incorporating Maya Romanoff’s handmade textiles into her work for an exhibit at its Chicago showroom this April. sarahraskey.com

JAMIE LEE REARDIN ILLUSTRATION “When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a Disney animator, and my interests later expanded into fashion,” recalls Los Angeles-based fashion illustrator Jamie Lee Reardin. “I eventually fused these passions, and from my imagination emerged these gawky gazelles with long, impossibly thin silhouettes.” Their dramatic appearance, seen in Aline, left, speaks to Reardin's fascination with complex personalities like Cruella De Vil and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Her talents ultimately caught the eye of Dior Beauty's Dianne Vavra, which turned into the ideal collaboration. ELOISE CORR DANCH PAPER All Brooklyn artist Eloise Corr Danch needs to create her swoon-worthy works are her grandmother’s heavy metal scissors, X-Acto knives and a colorful imagination. Whether flowers, headpieces, illustrations or myriad other objects, it’s the endless color wheel and the way light reflects off its surface that attracts Danch to paper as her medium. Since her studies explored fashion history and construction, translating her floral creations for editorial fashion spreads and window dressings comes naturally—they've been used to embellish Diane von Furstenberg’s New York and Paris flagship stores, for one. “I love the play between the utility of clothes and the artistry and romance of fashion,” she says. “I hope the defining message of my work is beauty. From an overlook at McWay Falls in Big Sur, California, Oakland artist Laura Plageman stands with her camera, marveling at the relationship between man and nature—the idyllic vista calling out to her, yet its inaccessible beach and falls remaining out of reach. In that vein, Plageman created a second image, left, that appears part illusory and part tangible, altering her original printed photo of McWay Falls and then photographing the result as a still life. Comprising her Response series, the photograph presents a seemingly impossible scene yet shows evidence of its construction through crumples and folds in the paper. “I delight in making an image that’s at once familiar and unfamiliar,” she says. “I want the viewer to look at the details and discover the image for themselves.” photolp.com
JEAN WELLS MOSAIC One look at Jean Wells’ mosaic-mirrored sculptures and it’s easy to see the influence of pop culture on her work. So it’s no surprise that when asked to name an artist favorite, she points to Wayne Thiebaud for reflecting food and humor in his paintings. Wells, too, turns to iconography and nostalgia when sculpting her fanciful objects and fast food re-creations using glass she cuts by hand; Conversation Piece, right, is an example of Wells recalling her youth. What's more, her mosaic soda bottles can be seen traveling the world this year as part of a Coca-Cola exhibition. “My motivation is spreading happiness,” muses the Seattle native. For San Diego-based painter Kelsey Brookes, a scientistturned-artist, there is no left brain-right brain distinction. “You have one brain and it can become interested in whatever you purposely direct it toward,” he says. To this point, in his artistic endeavors, Brookes still explores cerebral patterns and molecular structure—but instead of examining them through a microscope, he maps them out on canvas using Golden acrylic paint and Winsor & Newton Series 7 sablehair brushes. In contrast to their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, as seen in his One Pointed Attention series, right, Brookes calmly creates his psychedelic works while listening to NPR or, sometimes, in total silence. Ignacia Murtagh’s personal connection to pre-Hispanic native cultures began in the place she calls home: Southern Chile. “I fell in love with Chile’s poetic tradition that reinforces design as the vehicle to turn tiny but relevant details of nature into useful and significant interior elements,” she says. As a young designer, Murtagh has always attributed her design sensibility to the exuberant geography of her surroundings. Her most recent project—a series of three side tables for Bernhardt Design—directs that credit to the Andes Mountains. “The Los Andes tables were inspired by mountains that are strong and imposing but at the same time graceful and slender,” she describes. This
sculptural elegance was achieved with the tables’ unpredictable heights, organic angles and contrasting sharpness. Murtagh spent a year with the designers at Bernhardt sketching, modeling and ultimately learning to work with a new material: wood. “Ceramics are malleable. You can accomplish complex designs in a short time and change elements quickly,” explains the designer. “Wood is out of your control. The character of the grain, colors and textures are expressed differently in every piece. Once you understand the material, however, wood becomes limitless.” Armed with an aesthete’s eye and an ever-growing material repertoire, Murtagh is proving to be just as limitless herself.

Glass, bronze, porcelain: For artist David Wiseman, his material selections are as varied as his creations. His scene-stealing designs can be found all over the world, from large-scale porcelain installations for Dior boutiques in Shanghai and Tokyo—which he designed in collaboration with architect Peter Marino—to being a part of the permanent collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. Now, in partnership with R & Company, the Los Angeles-based Wiseman is taking his intricate skills to the ground level with a limited-edition rug design inspired by his travels and rooted in historical craftsmanship. Designer Todd Oldham gave you your big break. Tell us more about that. My first project was a nature-inspired hat hanger. Todd, who I had met when he was a guest lecturer for one of my classes at RISD, actually ended up ordering a bunch of them to give as gifts. Then, when I graduated college, he offered me a job. What are your favorite materials to work with? Bronze is endlessly fascinating to me. There are so many different alloys and patinas, and when you bring it up to a high polish, it’s a true work of art. How did rugs come into the picture for you? R & Company approached me with the idea to translate my designs into a rug collection. I went to Kathmandu to meet the weavers and to better understand their process. When I got there, I was blown away. Meeting them completely changed my concept because I needed to be as detailed as they were. Can you speak to the handmade aspect? It takes anywhere from six to eight months to create one rug and only 12 are being made in two distinct colorways. Because of the high quality of silk that they use, there are 4.5 million knots in each carpet.
Textiles are a new arena for you. Did you have to think differently? It started the same way I begin all of my designs, with pencil and paper, but I quickly learned that there is no room for error. The Tibetan and Nepalese communities of rug makers were so skilled at being able to capture the drawings they even wove my subtle eraser marks into one of the samples. How did your travels come to influence this particular project? The concept is about fusing my favorite patterns from around the world so I thought it would be appropriate to add a common Tibetan motif— such as billowing clouds—into the design. What else inspires you? I always turn to nature and its history in the decorative arts. I love seeing how different cultures have internalized nature and included it in their indigenous ornamental patterns. With everything you create, what are you always looking to achieve? Finding the poetic truth about what each material wants to become. I’m obsessed with that.

What happens behind the scenes in the studios of some of the state’s best craftsmen and artisans? For Kate Brown, creativity is about using all things logical and organic to make a very modern statement, as she does with her interactive Etazin chairs that are currently on display at Taliesin West and at the Hyatt Regency in Scottsdale. “My favorite way of describing these pieces is ‘interactive art,’ ” she says. “While from afar, they appear to be some otherworldly gyroscopic sculptures, as you step closer you realize that you can touch, spin, play and sit in them.” And this ability to commune with her audience gives Brown unfettered joy. “With my Etazin pieces,” she says, “I wanted to provoke two things above all else: a sense of balance and beauty, as well as a childlike feeling of playfulness once you realize its function. When did you open? We officially welcomed guests into our Scottsdale showroom at 2716 N. 68 th Street in November 2014. How is this showroom different from your Denver flagship? It’s a smaller space, around 3,000 square feet. It’s just our initial footprint in what we plan to be a more expansive foray into the Arizona market. What lines do you carry? You’ll find fabrics from Cowtan & Tout and Romo, furnishings from Hellman-Chang and Bright, lighting from Jonathan Browning and John Pomp, and rugs from Çinar. What’s up next for the showroom? One of the most well-respected names in fashion, Nina Garcia loves design in all its many forms. Here, the editor and television personality shares her secrets for great style—both on the runway and off of it. What new runway trends would you like to see reflected in the home? The Seventies were a big trend this season. I think it would be interesting to see fabrics from that era—like suede, denim and patchwork—incorporated into the home in an elegant way. Which fashion designer would you love to see develop his or her own home collection? I love Fendi and Armani’s home lines. They fit well with my subdued, pared-down luxe aesthetic. I’m not much of a print or pattern person myself, but I would love to see Mary Katrantzou or Proenza Schouler do a textile collection. Your home features masterful layering, thanks to the wonderful rugs throughout. Why is investing in rugs so important? They lay the groundwork for the entire space, tie everything together, and add character to a room. There are many great places for rugs, but my favorites are Tai Ping, Doris Leslie Blau, Stark, Safavieh and Marc Phillips.

Let’s talk fabric. Do you find you’re drawn to the same textures for your wardrobe as you are for your home? When it comes to interior design, I am attracted to simple, neutral color palettes but very rich texture because, for me, that’s where you can bring personality in. I think the same could be said for my wardrobe. My bedroom curtains are cashmere, and I love a good cashmere sweater, as well. Same with a shaggy fur coat—on a pillow? Fabulous. Share your home design staples. I’m always hunting for Swedish midcentury furniture, textured carpets and unique pieces during my travels. They’re what I splurge on. What are your favorite shops and showrooms to visit when you’re at home in New York? I always stop into Gallery BAC. The selection is amazing, and Carlos Aparicio is a dear friend of mine who actually helped me decorate my apartment. I also like Maison Gerard, Karl Kemp Antiques and 1stdibs.

ARIZONA CENTER FOR LAW & SOCIETY When the teams at Ennead Architects and Jones Studio were first contacted to oversee the design and construction of Arizona State University’s new Arizona Center for Law and Society, they knew they would have to think big. The result is a six-story, 280,000-square-foot building that will set the tone for the ambitions of its students, acting as an agent of change. Not only will it bring progressive architecture to downtown Phoenix, but it will also aid in initiating a discourse about the effect good design can have on the establishment of community. “The building design was conceived and developed with an openness to the public in mind and creates a unique urban environment that encourages vibrant connections,” says Ennead Architects’ Tomas Rossant. ennead.com; jonesstudioinc.com 158 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

This place has everything I love. 3 p.m. Anytime I have people visiting the shop, I send them down to my neighbors at Short Leash Hot Dogs. It has some crazy combinations, but I’m a big
fan of the Lady. It’s an allbeef hot dog wrapped in fl atbread with chipotle cream cheese and topped off with deep-fried pickles. 4 p.m. If you’re into midcentury modern furniture and design, the Melrose District has some incredible shops. I would recommend checking out Modern Manor, Modern on Melrose and Retro Ranch. 6 p.m. For the readers, be sure to swing by Changing Hands Bookstore. It has a robust used book section and uses its profi ts to support local schools and charities. 7 p.m. Finally, finish your day off at Hula’s Modern Tiki for dinner. I promise you will not be disappointed.

It’s no surprise that Mason Conway decided to open a vintage curiosities shop in Phoenix: The longtime collector had been stowing away little taxidermy oddities and treasures for over 11 years before he decided to hang up his hat and settle in at his now wildly popular store on Roosevelt Row. The hyper contrast that exists between navy and peridot combines all the carefree nuances of springtime. boys club “It’s material that makes an object or space tactile,” muses Lauren Geremia, principal designer of San Francisco’s Geremia Design. And, when presented with a vast array of the season’s fabric offerings, Geremia opted for a serene palette of neutrals to create the refined, masculine space shown here that invites intimate gatherings and quiet conversation. “I wanted the dining space to be minimal but mature,” she explains, “selecting simplistic patterns and muted colors that allow an opportunity for layering and creating dynamic, textured compositions.” Rose Tarlow Melrose House “napkins” sit atop place mats fashioned from a Knoll Luxe material to ground the tablescape, while a Cowtan & Tout fabric dresses the vintage midcentury chair frames and Pierre Frey’s stunning abstract textile takes its place as artwork—all giving way to a neutrally color-coded dining room where masculine notes abound and simplicity speaks volumes.

sitting pretty Designed to stop you in your tracks, this striking vignette fashioned by New York-based designer Young Huh proves that there is an art to making an entrance. “I imagined a welcoming spot where guests could arrive and be greeted with drinks and sweets,” says Huh. “My goal was to create an impactful area through contrasts in color and pattern.” To achieve her vision, Huh employed Schumacher’s Iconic Leopard fabric to flock the walls and adorned an accent pillow and the base of an ottoman with Duralee’s Eileen Kathryn Boyd collection. Rebecca Atwood’s playful spots find a home on a classic Bunny Williams stool, Beacon Hill’s Lilliflora textile, from the Ankasa Bespoke collection, drapes the table and Huh’s own fabric design for Peter Fasano graces the dining chair. “The more you mix, the more lively the room is,” says the designer, “what better stage for a little get-together.”

natural habitat Innately drawn to organic textures and wild prints, Dida Home’s David Miranda and Diana Uribe set out to create a bar scene perfect for cocktails, conversation and creative textile choices. “We had our mind set on using fabrics with earthy colors and organic shapes,” says Miranda, “giving way to a cheerful palette perfect for unwinding.” Starting with the drapery, where Chivaso’s Wild Jungle is layered adjacent to de Le Cuona’s quietly elegant Mali, the look continues with Dominique Kieffer’s Sousvide, designed by Paola Navone, seamlessly applied to the surface of the bar cart. Hunt Slonem’s Fritillery for Groundworks takes flight on a decorative marble slab, while Slonem’s Catelayas 2 makes its way into a mirrored frame on the gallery wall. Navone’s Quai Branly cloaks the armchair to complete the scene. Says Uribe, “In this space, materials set the temperature but color and print dictate the mood.”

I think we’re drawn to fun, accessible environments, and playful pieces like this create a nice juxtaposition to older, more detailed furnishings, art or architecture. Impression: A statement piece should be bold and noticed. This buffet’s refined details and sleek silhouette make it just that.

The simple structure of the two separate pieces coming together is intelligent and subtle, while the pieces themselves are cheeky and whimsical. Creativity: Artists should have fun playing with concepts or production methods. Imagination seems to be the way of driving innovation forward.

Composition: What appeals to me about the Asscher chandelier are the contradicting notions within the design. It is a daring piece that is geometrically composed yet remains unpredictable. It is both delicate and industrial, and worthy of discussion due to its play on form. The use of positive and negative space creates a pattern that is imposing but not heavy. Market: In today’s industry, there is a craving for creating both comfort and elegance. Sophisticated design does not have to be sterile. Authenticity shines through when a design expresses imagination. Installation: I would hang this piece in my studio space for cool inspiration as well as some necessary light.

This space doesn’t sacrifice style for function. This room did not call for a lot of color, but it needed a visual punch to draw you in. The offbeat still life from local Arizona artist Dan Fogel that hangs behind the desk was the perfect solution. I added a feminine touch to the desk vignette with a graphic chair pattern that has a nice large scale; a smaller pattern would have been too sweet and gotten lost. It was also important to mix in a few authentic vintage pieces so the homeowners could showcase what reflects their life.
Architecture, fashion and antiquities inspire you in your designs. How did those inspirations play out here? That’s an easy one. Those boxes in the painting are clearly architectural in their arrangement. The linen on the chair, well, I would love a skirt made out of that fabric. The one-of-a kind vintage wooden lion—affectionately referred to as Snaggle Tooth—adds such character. Also, check out the antique English writing box; the patina of the wood is so important in the mix of texture. How did you ensure organization in a space so minimalistic? It’s a small space, so I chose a custom X-base oak desk in a light stain with plenty of openness below. Although the desk is spare, the credenza behind it provides all the needed storage space, while the contrasting black hue sharpens up the look.

This closet is jaw-dropping. Tell me about your concept. I wanted to create the look of a high-end department store—as if the homeowner was able to shop every day in her own closet. Showcasing the latest in technology, the space includes LED light panels that give the shoes and purses displayed a sculptural quality. Hidden within the cabinet on the bottom floor are a concealed washer and dryer—offering a great convenience factor within the master suite. Are there any stories behind the other prominent pieces of this space? The Mother chandelier from Hudson Furniture really serves as the main focal point. It was the largest version of that particular fixture the company had ever fabricated. It’s hard to walk into the space and not take note of its shape, intricate quality fretwork and hundreds of delicate metal chains, which lend to the agedluxury aesthetic I strived for.

What else do you feel speaks to that particular aesthetic? I do love a good neutral palette, because for me, it is all about the textures—from the tiny glass beads found on the handcrafted wallpaper to the antique mirrored cabinetry with hand-blown glass pulls. During the design I decided to let the clothing itself become the accent of color within the space. I chose to have a neutral palette to highlight the true colors of the garments.

This space has such a welcoming, open air about it. Bringing in natural materials in golden and rusty tones helped to achieve a warm feel. The windows are wire-brushed cedar, chosen for its durability against the dry environmental conditions and relentless sun. As the eye is drawn upward, you’ll notice a lofty ceiling composed of Douglas fir, a combination of re-sawn timbers and planed tongueand-groove boards. The elements were a natural fit with the style I was aiming for. How did the blue tones fit into the natural look you were going for? The hue of the hand-painted maple mantel flows over from the nearby kitchen cabinetry, connecting the two open spaces. From there, I committed to shades of blue for the furniture and drapes. Surprisingly, after I had chosen everything else in the space, I happened upon the painting by James Verbicky while traveling and realized right away that it was a perfect fit.

What in this space reflects you most as a builder? The overall feel of both refined and sophisticated elements within the quality of the materials and build created a timeless design, which is something I always strive to accomplish. I love the amalgamation of the fireplace and mantel, which really connects the interior and exterior details with the limestone hearth. The theme of combining raw and refined materials, along with a relaxed structure, truly represents me.

With the kitchen arising as the new epicenter of the home, bolder design is spicing up this bustling room. In this Hamptons residence, here and below, New York designer Guillaume Gentet created a personality-filled space using custom cabinetry by Effeti USA with whispers of lilac throughout. “People forget that the inside of a cabinet should be as pretty as the outside,” he says, referencing the violet (Pantone 7444 UP) of the island, which is echoed in the shelving concealed behind the wood panels. The owners’ art, like the Buddha sculptures by Marlene Rose, continues the artistic flavor of the room’s aesthetic.

THE FAUCET Every line and visible design element counts in a minimal space. Therefore, making major impact with a sculptural faucet, like Franke’s new Planar 8 Flex semi-professional version, is essential. The masculine, squared-off silhouette doesn’t just pack a visual punch, though; its 360-degree swiveling spout is highly functional and allows for maximum movement around the sink.

Designing kitchens for the past 40 years, it’s safe to say that Chicago-based Mick De Giulio knows a thing or two about what makes for successful culinary quarters. Here, the maestro lends some counsel and maps out what’s currently on his radar.
There’s no excuse for having a disorganized kitchen today with all the great solutions out there. What are some of your favorites? Motorized doors to hide nooks for small appliances and creating charging stations by putting USB ports inside of drawers are a go-to of mine. Another is a cabinet I recently designed called Metal Boy (shown above) for keeping pots and pans organized and accessible. It has recessed LED lighting so cookware is easily viewable and becomes like sculptural pieces. Metal seems to have become part of your signature look. How do you keep it from feeling too sterile? I love using silver nickel and polished stainless steel, but I always layer different materials and textures into my designs, sometimes even with very subtle changes. Honed and brushed stones, hand-scraped woods and fabrics for soft seating add comfort and are a great complement to the shine of metals. What’s exciting you right now? Steam ovens and induction cooktops. There’s so much you can do in a steam oven, from baking bread to roasting juicy meats, and induction has so many things going for it as far as safety and heat control.

Need to pre-heat your oven but you’re still at the store? Your smartphone can get that started so it’s at the perfect temperature when you get home. Here, Lamont Gaines, showroom manager of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida, breaks down the newest innovations.
Smartphone capabilities are infiltrating the appliance market. What are some highlights? The ability to measure the temperature of your meal in the oven without being anywhere near the kitchen—let alone at home—via a digital thermometer is huge right now. Also, you can now download recipes into your oven and watch cooking tutorials via a Wi-Fi-enabled touch-screen panel on your range, which is so useful for the amateur cook.
Let’s talk about innovations in cooking. What new options exist? If you have the space to accommodate it, steam ovens (like Miele’s ContourLine M Touch Combi-Steam version at left) should be strongly considered. There are models that let you store personal profiles to steam your vegetables or fish to the exact tenderness preferred. Wine storage and serving systems are becoming more prominent in the custom kitchen. Any suggestions? Dual-zone refrigeration is the only way to go to keep your whites, reds and champagnes at the appropriate temperatures. There are also dispensing systems—check out the Discovery WineStation by Dacor—that will serve just the right amount, from a taste to a full glass, and preserve the freshness of the rest of the unused bottle.

Indoor-outdoor living is king right now. Blurring the lines between inside and out is particularly successful in the kitchen, where incorporating plein-air cooking, al fresco dining and edible gardens satiates an entertaining-rich lifestyle. In this California home, I-Ching Ueng—designer and manager of Poggenpohl’s San Francisco showroom—stuck to a sleek design as not to compete with the lush garden just through the disappearing sliding glass doors. Silestone countertops in White Zeus Extreme and a stainless-steel panel backsplash reflect the sunlight to further enliven the space.

THE HARDWARE Stainless steel may reign supreme, but gold and bronze details are giving the long-standing heavyweight a run for its money. The warm and luxurious finishes add a definite je ne sais quoi and can be employed on cabinets— like Rocky Mountain Hardware’s Empire pulls—or plumbing fixtures, and bridge the gap between the modern and traditional design arenas.
SURFACE
Slab stone such as marble and quartz has long been the go-to countertop material in the modern kitchen for its uniform look. Though its dominance in this arena certainly isn’t subsiding, there’s been a movement toward mixing it up with more personality-driven tilework for backsplashes, floors and feature walls. Hand-painted tiles lend a human touch to an otherwise pristine space. Though be advised: The graphic nature of this look is not for the demure design enthusiast.

A brawny hood has always been a staple in a well-stocked kitchen, but they can be a bit of a blemish if the intent is to keep everything as simple and unassuming as possible. Enter the decorative ventilation option. These new devices are masters of disguise, hiding in plain sight in the shape of chandeliers and lighting fixtures, disappearing into countertops at the push of a button, or taking sculptural form like in Elica’s Space model that not only looks completely unexpected, but is also 35-percent quieter than traditional designs.

The customary formula for kitchen design reads as follows: upper and lower cabinetry, pantry, large appliances. However, open shelving concepts are breaking that mold. “We wanted a sense of openness and casual ease,” says California designer Vanessa Alexander of the kitchen space shown at left she remodeled for a Malibu beach house. “I avoid upper cabinetry as much as possible. Floating shelving provides a greater sense of space and can be dressed in such a flexible way with practical and décor items that lend life, color and texture.” Tip: Stick to a cohesive palette for any tableware on display to achieve a polished look.

Induction cooking has been a burgeoning trend in culinary technology over the past few years, competing side by side with its electric and gas counterparts. The newest offerings, such as Gaggenau’s CX 491 full-surface cooktop, right, are taking the already beloved advantages of speed and safety to the next level with intuitive free-positioning abilities. What exactly does that mean? Place cookware anywhere on the surface, and the stove will instantly detect its individual location, size and shape, heating up only that precise spot to the specified temperature. It’s so inherently practical, it’ll make you wonder where this functionality has been all along.

Anybody can draw something, but it’s basically a concept; a design is something that can be built and visualized.”
TOP: The perfect oasis for parents and children, the L-shape of the pool features a shallow area for playing and a deep area for diving. Creating a resort atmosphere, the spa spills into the pool, and a large shelf provides a lounge area for adults. BOTTOM: This sophisticated spa, designed in the enclosed, private courtyard of a home, features a blend of SICIS glass tile that was custom-designed to look like the waters of Bermuda, travertine decking and coping and custom-designed copper spillways.
Describe the philosophy behind your firm. Our philosophy is that a water shape should complement the home's architecture and blend in with the surrounding environment. Our goals are to design something that functions well and to use quality products and construction practices that not only meet—but exceed—industry standards. How do you define luxury? For me, it’s in the details…the way things are built in a way that people feel its quality; something that is beautiful to the client and makes them feel relaxed and welcomed in their background. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? Good design has to function and incorporate elements that are important to the client. A good designer doesn't just put something in: form is function.

W
e wanted to create a serene sanctuary within the city,” explains architectural designer Sarah Swartz Wessel of the Phoenix penthouse apartment that she and her husband, architectural designer and general contractor Ethan Wessel, redesigned for their clients, Mike Sparaco and Darin Osborne. The duo had earned the couple’s trust by also devising their previous single-family home in nearby Paradise Valley. “We love the turnkey process from design to build,” Mike says, “and we’re drawn to the clean lines and the quality of their work.” Built atop a commercial building in Midtown during its conversion to residential, the unit, though brand-new, had an indeterminate character that begged to be streamlined. Ductwork and steel beams covered with fireproof spray had been left exposed in some areas and hidden behind drywall in others, and for such a large space, the layout felt choppy and enclosed. For the owners, who frequently host large soirees for friends and nonprofit organizations, entertaining is a top priority, so they asked the design team to create a more open and efficient layout. “We wanted to correct some of the interior flow issues,” Darin says. “It was very doorintensive and we like more connected spaces.” To produce the sense of openness that their clients envisioned, the Wessels concentrated on refining the interior finishes, eliminating walls and minimizing visual clutter. They crafted a large piece of lacquered casework along the wall of windows, for example, to conceal the home’s mechanicals, roll shades and extraneous wiring. luxe interiors + design / 253
Removing a spare bedroom created the kind of open layout that the owners envisioned for their collection of artwork and classic furnishings, which include the living room’s modern sofa from Hold It Contemporary Home in San Diego—dressed in Maxwell’s Quiet Chinchilla—and a custom acacia-wood-and-acrylic cocktail table from Levi Christiansen. The hand-woven Surya rug is from Copenhagen Imports.

“We worked really hard to minimize detail and keep things simple, clean and aligned,” Ethan Wessel explains. “When we do work like this in the city, we like to think of it as one giant piece of casework—a jewel box within the building. It’s kind of like living in a big, beautiful cabinet.” Even the doors have been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible with simple pivot hinges and no doorjambs across the top. When opened, the nesting entry door to the master bedroom becomes flush with the adjacent wall. “It’s kind of like a moving wall,” Sarah Swartz Wessel says. “When closed, it disappears and looks like a panel.” The oak doorframes match the unit’s 8-inchwide white-oak flooring, which the Wessels chose for its clean look, as well as its lightness. “We’re purists and like a look that is modern yet natural and timeless,” Sarah Swartz Wessel explains. Removing walls was also a key element in creating a sense of openness on the first floor, where the designers eliminated a third bedroom that was adjacent to the kitchen and living room. “No matter how big or small the kitchen is, everybody just always seems to end up there,” Darin explains. “So we wanted to make it the star.” Aware that the home would be the venue for many social gatherings, the Wessels created a continuous kitchen and bar area using a mix of aluminum and laminate cabinetry from Bulthaup. “We wrapped the cabinetry in an L-shape from the kitchen to the bar,” Sarah Swartz Wessel says. As it happens, Mike and Darin remodeled their second home in San Diego at the same time and selected Bulthaup cabinetry for that house, as well. “Regardless of what state we’re in it still feels like home, because each space is very similar,” Mike notes. On the upper level, a wall to the office was also eliminated to create a sort of mezzanine overlooking the living areas and to open the view to both the south- and west-facing windows. A new glass railing allows natural daylight to flow into the space unobstructed. “The office is now light-filled from two directions,” Sarah Swartz Wessel says. To bring natural daylight into the interior spaces, several walls, such as between the master bedroom and bath, and the master closet and mezzanine, were replaced

To bring the outside in, the owners created Central Phoenix in White, a textured wall vinyl by Photo Tex, purchased through AlphaGraphics, that features photographer Kevin Saraultâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s image of the Phoenix skyline. The Chelsea platform bed by Modloft is clad in gray leather.

with translucent glass. “The master bathroom and closet are now filled with light, and that made a huge difference in how the unit feels,” Sarah Swartz Wessel says. “It’s a total sanctuary and just exudes such a happy feeling.” Although the Phoenix and San Diego homes both possess a modernist aesthetic, only the penthouse unit offers a 1,500-square-foot rectilinear balcony with spectacular skyline views. And though there were originally only two sets of telescoping patio doors, the Wessels successfully lobbied the homeowners association for permission to add a third set. “The new doors give us better access to the patio from three key points, which helps with both airflow and for entertaining purposes,” Mike explains. To help filter out the strong southwestern sunlight, landscape architect Chad Robert
brought in Mexican bird of paradise trees and designed built-in lighting and custom fiberglass planters, which include a table ledge for cocktails. “It’s fun for me to create and do new things that have never been done before,” says Robert, who also stained the existing floating concrete pavers that conceal drainage and irrigation in three different colors and created a grid-like pattern for interest. Both the spacious outdoor area and the more open interior have been a hit with Mike and Darin, who recently hosted between 85 and 100 neighbors for an evening gathering set up by the building’s social committee. “The weather was perfect, so people were moving between the inside and out,” Darin says. “The flow functioned exactly as we had envisioned.”

L
istening to painter Quim Bové talk about art is like drinking a smooth, full-bodied Garnacha: His Catalan accent, from the northern region of Spain, lulls you into a state of linguistic nirvana. “I just want to make people feel good,” he says. “I want them to feel emotion. When you touch someone like that, something magical happens.” While his philosophies on art and life may put you in a Zen-like state, one look at Bové’s mixed-media works will shock you into a higher level of consciousness. His cosmic, otherworldly abstract paintings are a big-bang collision of vibrant energy, color and enthusiasm splattered, twisted and swirled onto the canvas. “It is a multifaceted process,” he says, “where I incorporate different interpretations of the relationship between mankind and the universe: energy, gravity, humans and the questioning of our existence.” His latest series—Multiverse, which was recently shown at Bonner David Galleries—opens viewers’ minds to consider the idea that there may be more out there in the world then what they originally thought. Though Bové was formally trained in a traditional style heavily influenced by Renaissance and Baroque painters and looked to such Spanish greats as Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Diego Velázquez and Antoni Tàpies for inspiration, the power of creating raw emotion rather than perfectly painted forms quickly took over his approach. His creative process begins even before he starts to sketch—with music; he prefers contemporary jazz, specifically Pat Metheny. “He is a virtuoso,” the artist says. “I think he, too, connects with the universe because his music has a sensibility that puts me into a mood where I feel inspired.” But for Bové, who moved from the lush mountains of Spain to the Arizona desert nearly 19 years ago, his arid surroundings are the most inspiring muse of all. “During the day, the desert may seem barren and like there’s nothing there, but it’s actually the opposite,” he says. “At night it reveals a whole new life. You look in the sky and it’s covered with a blanket of stars. It’s like a gateway to the universe, and that’s what I want my art to be. I want it to take you somewhere new.”

F
or most Arizonans looking to experience the French countryside, a long transatlantic flight is inevitable. However, for one Scottsdale family, the thought of creating their own slice of rural France right in the desert seemed the better choice. The family had been living in Arcadia, just around the corner from a 2.3-acre horse property. Long, narrow and unusually large for the area, the lot was the ideal location for their new dream home, and when it became available, the couple quickly pounced. The owners’ first task was to turn the property into a country French-inspired residence that would combine the charm of an older-looking estate with the conveniences of modern day, and after interviewing architect Jim Blochberger, the couple promptly engaged him to design the home that they envisioned. “We knew right away that he was the right man to make our dreams a reality,” says the husband. Also enlisted was designer April Lozevski, who has known the family for more than 14 years. “This is my fifth house with them and our first home together built from the ground up,” she states. Besides a country French feel, the owners also requested a kid- and pet-friendly environment for their four children and four dogs, as well as a home suited for entertaining both inside and out. Blochberger began by siting the house in the center of the property. “By placing the home in the middle of the lot, I was able to design a long oak-lined drive, which, when incorporated with a meticulously manicured landscape and lawn, provided that estate-like ambience the owners were looking for,” he says.

For the design of the house, the architect looked to classic elements of country French style, incorporating pitched roofs, dormer windows, brick window heads and sills, wood shutters, copper chimney pots and gutters, and wrought-iron details. Contributing to an aged feel are terraces paved with reclaimed bricks and the natural texture of plaster walls and rubble-stone bases. The final touch is a wooden shake roof that offers warmth and a less formal feel. Inside, the architectural charm continues, with each room’s ceiling boasting its own unique look. A groinvault ceiling with custom stenciling imparts elegance in the breakfast room, while the living room features a high-pitched, sloped ceiling embellished with artful wood trusses. “The wood trusses were designed with a curved
bottom chord to add softness and a custom detail,” Blochberger says. Natural light flows throughout, thanks to the architect’s strategic placement of doors and windows and a thoughtful configuration of rooms. But perhaps the most dramatic element is the foyer’s curved staircase. “We wanted the design to be classic with a sense of anticipation,” says the husband. Although the just over 20,000-square-foot residence—with detached guest cottage—lives large, it still exudes an intimate ambience. Much of this is thanks to Lozevski, who focused on devising a timeless design for the interiors that wasn’t too fussy and could stand up to a busy family. “While both the husband and wife like a traditional look, they didn’t want the rooms to feel too formal,” she explains.
Key pieces in the living room include a bookcase from Found, an antique French trumeau mirror from Relics and a Canopy Designs light fixture from Sun Lighting. Bergères upholstered in a Sanderson toile print from John Brooks Incorporated flank a custom limestone fireplace designed by Lozevski and fabricated by Visionmakers International.

Imparting tranquility is a palette of pale hues—sea glass, celadon, butter yellow, ivory, greige and camel— along with the subdued shades of natural linen and jute, fabrics that were selected for textural interest, staying power and washability. Plaids, toiles and florals were thrown in as accents, as well as wall treatments: wood wainscoting, rustic reclaimed brick and wallpaper. “We used wallcoverings in several rooms as a little surprise,” says Lozevski. “It plays nicely with the warm parchment-colored Venetian plaster walls.” Elegant and rustic materials mingle and enrich the overall design, particularly in the kitchen. “The owners love the look of an all-white kitchen mixed with wood,” says Lozevski. “So we blended an iroko-wood butcher

block-topped island with creamy white cabinetry and Calacatta Gold marble countertops.” Flooring is primarily a combination of foot-worn, honey-colored walnut and brushed Galala limestone. Furnishings throughout the house are a combination of new pieces—many custom designs—as well as a few family heirlooms. “The homeowners have some wonderful antiques that have been handed down,” says Lozevski. “We tried to use as much of their furniture as possible, sometimes reupholstering or refinishing them so that they worked in their new setting. It gives the home a little extra soul.” Landscape designer Jeff Berghoff—known for creating verdant estate-style settings—came onboard to create the home’s picturesque surroundings. To lend an illusion of age, Berghoff incorporated lush plant materials and
mature specimens, including the live oaks forming the drive’s allée and the pear trees populating a grove in the auto court. “We created a layered, tousled look with an organic feel in some places, and in other places, we did a more ordered impression,” he explains. To take advantage of the lot’s slope, Berghoff designed a series of cascading terraces. “The upper veranda is off the home’s main living areas. Then you go down to the pool terrace and then down to a kids’ play area,” he says. Today the poetic residence fits the family like a glove. “I think it’s accurate to say that we have succeeded in creating a home that captures each family member’s unique personality and seamlessly blends style and functionality with an essence of the French countryside,” says Lozevski. “The house offers just the right combination of relaxed luxury that the family loves.”
The bedroom in the guest cottage contains a bed dressed with teastained floral Aubusson pillows and white washed-linen Bella Notte bedding from Rustic Stuff. I
t all started when Sim Hankerson bought Greg Hankerson a welding machine for Christmas one year—and the rest was history. “She’s the brains behind the organization,” says Greg of his wife and business partner of their Phoenixbased furniture manufacturing and retail company, Vintage Industrial. Sim is not only responsible for taking them out of the garage, where they first began, but also for guiding the company’s design philosophy. “For me, the process is simple,” she says. “Greg designs and I refine.” The duo describe their evolution from producing furnishings as a hobby to now supplying the luxury market as an organic one, where creating furniture that they love just naturally brought about business. “People tend to gravitate toward products when the person who made them is passionate,” says Greg. Now a group of 25 run Vintage Industrial (Greg calls them “family”), which sells newly made, vintageinspired furniture to the public, as well as custom furnishings for private and corporate commissions, such as a formidable kitchen island for a Bon Appétit magazine chef, multiple pieces for the Proof restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, and a conference table for the Twitter offices. Working with steel and hardwoods (some reclaimed), the company creates furniture that is not only decidedly high-end but also made to last. Upcoming designs will be inspired by the clean lines of the midcentury modern pieces that the couple themselves collect, with Sim’s eye on lacquer and matte-gold hardware—a more glamorous take on industrial strength.

Traveling, browsing vintage shops and drawing from the fashion industry are how Sim anticipates what’s “in the minds of the style makers,” yet she ultimately finds that an intuitive sense guides her creative process. Her keen eye will soon be put to work on her off-hours: The couple recently purchased a midcentury modern home that they’re starting to put their unique stamp on. Highlights will include a calming, minimal space to come home to after hectic days in their massive 65,000-square-foot workshop as well as a Vintage Industrial custom kitchen—a new product the company soon plans to offer to its customers in a long list to come. “From the start, we have designed pieces that we love,” says Greg. “We all want to be passionate in our lives and few have the luxury to do that.”

omeowner Sarah Nolan couldn’t have predicted that the living room of her new Scottsdale penthouse would have champagne-colored swivel chairs with fringe paired with a peacock-print rug, or that the base of her kitchen island would be washed in gold leaf. But then again, after working with Chicago designer Julia Buckingham on four previous projects—and becoming close friends in the process—she never gave a second thought to how it would turn out. Sarah, a Chicago native who uses the Arizona abode as a place where she and her four children can retreat from the harsh Midwest winters, had grown so in tune with her designer while working on her home in Winnetka, Illinois—as well as two downtown Chicago apartments and her mother’s condo in Florida—that after an afternoon of choosing tile together for the penthouse floors, kitchen and bathrooms, she was content to let Buckingham do the rest. “There’s a relationship between the two of us that is the most unbelievable meeting of the minds,” Buckingham says. “Sarah likes things that are unique and special, which speaks so personally to my own aesthetic.”
To begin, Buckingham brought in Gilbert-based builder Ron Barney, who had worked on the designer’s own second home in Phoenix. As with Sarah, Buckingham’s shared past experience with Barney was critical for the build-out of the Scottsdale penthouse, which had remained vacant for 10 years, never having gone beyond the concrete slab and studs. “Julia needed someone she’d dealt with previously, since she was remote and orchestrating much of the work from Chicago,” Barney says. “We’re a great team—she has the vision, and I have the ability to make things happen.” Buckingham enlisted Barney to enlarge the master bathroom, transform a bedroom space into a study and bar adjacent to the dining room, and anchor the living area with hefty built-ins surrounding an electric fireplace, another also resides in the master bedroom. Then, as Sarah likes to say, “came the fun stuff.” She had already been storing away the contents of a dining room Buckingham designed for a Napa Valley show house in 2013, as well as pieces from another show house Buckingham did in Lake Forest, Illinois. “I’m not allowed to be near any of Julia’s projects,” Sarah jokes.

As it happens, the penthouse dining space perfectly accommodated the Napa show house’s custom round table crafted from an antique water mill wheel, as well as a colorful vintage light fixture that Buckingham found in Paris and an oversize contemporary art piece by Chicago artist Linc Thelen. Custom-designed pocket doors made from glass rondeles and a new rug with chain details pull the room together. “Julia’s like a curator—these found objects become pieces of art that you get to live with,” Sarah says of Buckingham’s trademarked aesthetic—Modernique®— which highlights modern furnishings and art with vintage, antique and rustic finds that give a room character. Sarah had originally thought she would transfer many of her furnishings to Scottsdale from the Chicago apartment. But that notion quickly faded. “I wanted the Arizona home to be light and bright,” she says, noting the penthouse has sweeping views of Camelback Mountain, The Phoenician resort and the buttes of Papago Park. “I wanted to have more fun than just recreating my Chicago apartment in Scottsdale—to do something different.” And fun is what she got. Those fringed swivel chairs are a nod to the West, but the glossy leather strips—fabricated by a dressmaker in New York City—go down to the floor like a flapper dress—without a cowboy in sight. Adjacent is a shiny black-and-white console that sits underneath an elaborate black-and-white paper cutout by Richard Shipps. “They’re so much alike, but also so incredibly different, which is the way I like to design,” Buckingham says. “It’s not just about one era, style or texture—it’s a combination of all those things.” Buckingham went on to use a dramatic black-gold-andwhite tile that she and Sarah chose for the kitchen as a foil for custom pendant lights made from smoky vintage Murano glass and Lucite bangles, which pick up the details of the carved-wood island base that shimmers in gold. In the master bedroom, the designer took a pair of green ombre velvet chairs Sarah saw in her showroom and placed them in front of a fireplace. Buckingham also employed a vintage carousel horse she had found on her travels in a bedroom for Sarah’s daughter—a competitive equestrian—as a nod to the white Arabian horses she boards nearby. Through it all, Sarah kept herself in the dark about her designer’s progress. “I told her to surprise me,” she explains, “and when I finally walked in when it was done, I burst into tears because it just felt like I was home. Julia’s ability to put it all together is just magic.”
Buckingham designed the dining room table with an old water mill wheel gear whose edges echo the lines of the blown-glass lights that hang down in various heights. Buckingham also custom-designed the doors, which were fabricated by Door Works. Kelly Wearstlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Feline fabric for Groundworks covers Kravet chairs; the wool-andsilk Lavaliere floorcovering is from The Rug Company in Chicago.

The kitchen’s tumbled-metal mosaic backsplash tiles from The Fine Line in Chicago were among the first design choices for the penthouse. Louise Gaskill fabricated the equally bold pendant lights; the vintage barstools are from Modern Manor. Counters from Cactus Stone & Tile—polished granite on the island and leathered granite for the perimeters—top white-oak cabinetry fabricated by Desert Cove Woodworks.
Sarahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s study does double duty as an extra entertaining space off the dining room, complete with a wet bar and wine chiller. A chandelier from New Metal Crafts in Chicago hangs above an antique table purchased through Buckingham Interiors + Design; the Andrew Martin Enquirer chair is upholstered in a Romo fabric. A zebrahide rug sits over wood-grain porcelain floors from The Fine Line.

The homeowner spotted the hand-carved antique French armchairs, already upholstered in Opuzenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blue-and-green flocked velvet, in Buckinghamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chicago showroom. The designer juxtaposed them with modern abstracts by Lynn Basa. Builder Ron Barney had a glass-framed electric Simplifire fireplace, which features flames that change color, mounted into the wall.
Oomphâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rectangular Newport mirrors in a soft blue hue add a quiet charm to the master bathroom above the linen white Kohler vanity with polishedmarble countertop. Floors in a distinct pattern create interest.
