fiber artist Suzanne Tick, the debut collection is Starting Point, nine artsy high-performance fabrics suited to varied applications, from walls to seating. All began life as exercises on Tick’s handloom before being re-interpreted as contract offerings that nonetheless retain a handcrafted feel. Take Perilune, for instance, a PVC-free upholstery fabric made of bleachcleanable polyurethane printed with a moonphase pattern. Absolutely heavenly.

the mart’s new look Talk about stepping it up! The 85-year-old Merchandise Mart—re-christened theMART—recently received its most extensive rehab in four decades, completed just in time for NeoCon. Spearheaded by New York firm A+I, the three-year, $40 million facelift centers around a buzzy landmark: the Grand Stair, a 50-foot-wide communal space that connects the first and second floors via marble stadium seating. After checking in at the new reception desk—some 60 linear feet of Calacatta marble—guests can relax and enjoy free WiFi and front-row viewing of a massive projection wall. wolf-gordon SPACE 10-161 An appealingly angular design awaits visitors in the Mart lobby, thanks to NeoCon stalwart Wolf-Gordon. The mountainous installation is in fact Office_Excavate, a dynamic work grotto. Located between elevator banks in the Mart’s entry, the 18-foot-long banquette is covered in 118 of the company’s textiles, creating a welcoming space to chat or recharge. The site-specific vignette was conceived by Marybeth Shaw, Wolf-Gordon’s vice-president of marketing and product design, in collaboration with installation maestro karlssonwilker, Brooklyn artist Graham Kelman, and fabricator New Motor.

IIDA awards A devilishly compact chocolate shop by De-Spec—a project that won an IIDA award in 2012—was what brought the firm to the attention of textile entrepreneur Sandy Chilewich. She needed a compact, flexible, modular display system suitable not only for trade fairs and department store shops-in-shop but also for the first stand-alone Chilewich boutique, in New York. Before the display system could debut at the latter, De-Spec had to gut the space, 800 square feet unexpectedly long and narrow in plan. The concrete ceiling, luckily, was high. Now painted black, it’s equipped with metal halide track lighting and LED pendant fixtures in the form of glowing disks—brightening their surroundings both literally and figuratively. “It’s a happy black space, not a moody one,” De-Spec founder Farnaz Mansuri remarks. Right inside the entry, a sidewall’s matte white plaster, mixed with marble dust, is sculpted into folds reminiscent of origami. Almost all other stretches of wall, of course, are devoted to the display system. First comes a backing of thick fiberboard, integrally colored black and drilled with a grid of holes about 5 inches apart. Stout pegs of black-stained oak fill some holes. So do supports for shelves and for dining-height mini-tables that provide a landing surface for shoppers playing with place mats and napkins. The monochromatic interior sets off the rainbow of products. “They are very colorful when they want to be,” Mansuri says. Ever the New Yorker, however, she’s obliged to admit that her own expanding Chilewich collection remains basically black. —Craig Kellogg

In a metropolis of 8.5 million people, the focal point of a Chinese municipal region with a population of 30 million, it may be difficult to focus on the enchanted geography. However, Chongqing, spectacularly sited on the banks of the Yangtze River, was known through the millennia for its abundance of water, in countless forms, as well as lush trees and mountain peaks forever cloaked in a primordial mist. And that’s what CCD/Cheng Chung Design channeled for this destination hotel, built to a notable standard of international luxury. The 336 guest rooms and suites are “detailed for visitors to experience and explore,” interior designer Nick Tse explains. Dividers of subtly patterned fog-gray stone screen the wet areas. In the sleeping-lounge precinct, furniture is modernist in aesthetic, with plenty of wood visible. Tse’s design excels on a grand scale, too. A double-height plant wall brings nature into the soaring lobby. On the wall behind the reception desks, he scattered a galaxy of small wooden orbs, and larger versions are positioned on the floor as abstract sculpture. How do you mix the cool of Milanese futurism with the razzle-dazzle of Las Vegas? Just ask Alessandro Munge, who designed this Italian restaurant and bar at the Bellagio Resort & Casino. Lago by Julian Serrano, the James Beard Foundation Award–winning chef’s second Bellagio establishment, boasts shiny chrome details, energized colors, and a rakish angularity, all pitched to today’s breed of hyper-caffeinated traveler. (Quite a contrast with the Louis XVI opulence of his first Bellagio restaurant, the French-accented Picasso.) Munge calls Milan “the birthplace of futurismo,” and Lago’s casino-facing interior facade is an exuberant rendition of the city’s street map in backlit colored glass, framed in strips of white powder-coated aluminum. Steps inside the 6,500-square-foot space, oblong upholstered seating gathers beneath artwork commissioned from Lori-Ann Bellissimo—yes, that’s her real name. The kaleidoscopic wall sculpture is called Giuseppe Blu. A bar in glistening Italian marble glides back toward the final destination. As a one-man show, Bart Shaw Architect qualified—by the widest possible margin— to win the IIDA’s annual Will Ching competition for commercial interiors by firms of five or fewer. Which isn’t to say that a sole practitioner doesn’t rely on many like-minded collaborators. Bart Shaw could never have realized this Fort Worth fashion boutique, Pax & Parker, without the help of a summer intern. Or the fabricator for the display fixtures: A welding instructor at Tarrant County College, she happened to be the neighbor of a member of Shaw’s construction team. The massive white-painted steel fixtures’ shape echoes the square outline around the boutique logo. That geometry repeats in paneling—the 8-inch squares, cut from plywood sheets of varying thicknesses, are arranged as a bas-relief to throw narrow shadows. In a yin/yang scenario of order versus chaos, Shaw then juxtaposed the straight lines and right angles with the tangle of 1,800 wire clothes hangers composing a screen. (He’d initially asked friends to donate used drycleaning hangers but ultimately paid $200 for new ones in pristine white.) He and his intern spent several days assembling the hangers into modules, secured with baling wire. Hanging the modules from aircraft cable took another couple of days. “For something really special, you have to will it to be done,” he notes. The screen now divides the sales floor of the 1,350-square-foot boutique from a sitting area outside the fitting rooms. —Craig Kellogg

When the office went casual, the ripple effect resounded in

Just ask New Studio president David Allan Pesso, who makes seating the star of Moto, a modular system that supports collaboration and fosters interaction. “By implementing asymmetry and contouring we created a visually soft and playful vernacular,” he says, referring to lightweight modules that can stand alone, cluster into groups, or link together in linear or curvilinear configurations. Also in the mix are complementary tables tailored to support specific functions; there’s a conical-base version for gathering and a media station for connecting, among others. A variety of wood veneers, laminates, and metal finishes are available, as well as a host of covers from graded-in partners like Maharam and Designtex.

Brendan Sodikoff is the brains behind upscale diner Au Cheval, Bavette’s Bar and Boeuf steakhouse, and Doughnut Vault, to name just a few of the 10-plus lauded eateries the prolific restaurateur has opened in six years. The newest addition to his portfolio combines his greatest hits in a food hall mash-up: Cheval’s legendary burger and Doughnut Vault’s baked goods coexist with a hot and cold salad bar, a pastrami station, an espresso counter, and small-batch cocktails. Décor is casualcomfy, 1970’s rec-room vibe: The charmingly mismatched TV lounge—type space is large enough to fit 235 patrons and a miniature putting green. “We’re giving the neighborhood what it’s been asking for,” Sodikoff dishes. As well as busy Neocongoers: It's less than two blocks from the Mart.
As the general public continues its fascination with culinary culture, a trade term has entered the layperson’s lexicon: "the family meal," which is what’s served to employees before a restaurant opens for dinner service. When chef Roland Liccioni was tapped for this brasserie inside the Hyatt Centric, he thought about which meals made his colleagues in the kitchen happiest, thus the menu’s mix of comforting French classics, such as omelettes, French dip, and steak frites. Operated by Quay Tao and Joey Beato, this restaurant appreciates meat in all its forms. To start, there is roasted bone marrow or a terrine of short rib and oxtail. Entrees include that caveman-esque cut, the porterhouse. A few delicate options also make the menu, like bouillabaisse with smoked tomato or tuna crudo. Birdcage pendants, mismatched mirrors, and blue-velvet seating lend the steakhouse a shabby chic ambiance.

Atwood [$] This seasonal American restaurant gets its name from the original architect of the structure it’s housed inside, the landmarked Reliance Building, built in 1895 by Charles B. Atwood. But it’s BCDG Studio that refreshed the current interiors with appealing white subway tile and tufted black-leather banquettes. The minimalism stops there. The menu serves up such homey flavorful classics as monkey bread, pan-seared chicken, and rhubarb upside-down cake. 1 West Washington Street; 312-368-1900.
Brindille [$] You might recognize this hot spot: It’s the 2015 James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design, which went to Bureau of Architecture and Design. Turns out, it’s a family affair. Principal Tom Nahabedian is a cousin of the chef, Carrie Nahabedian, and he outfitted the space in a serene arboreal theme (brindille is French for “twig”)—think branchlike Lindsey Adelman light fixtures and walnut accents redolent of a forest. Of course, the cuisine is equally exquisite: lobes of foie gras, caviar atop Cortes Island oysters, sweetbreads with cocoa—and those are just the appetizers. 534 North Clark Street; 312-595-1616.
Charlatan [¢] Looks old-school, but is actually quite post-modern. That’s pretty much the deal at this Italian joint. White-painted brickwork reads typical trattoria, but plumbing pipes fashioned into light fixtures and wallpaper patterned with dancing skeletons are more irreverent. That divergence from tradition also shines through in the pastas—truffle-flecked messinese topped with a sous-vide egg, charred-fennel tortellini sprinkled with pollen—all of which are made in-house and offered in sensible half portions. 1329 West Chicago Avenue; 312-818-2073.

Walnut wainscoting, earth-tone tilework, an original tin ceiling, and a jukebox evoke Chicago's bygone era, when legendary local eateries Sophie’s Busy Bee and Leo’s Lunchroom existed. This menu, however, a fusion of Southern and Mexican, is no typical greasy spoon. Fried chicken comes smothered in chorizo-verde gravy. The ham-and-cheese sandwich is flecked with cilantro and salsa. Frontier [¢] Should you really want to break away from the Mart, head on over to what’s referred to as “the edge of civilization,” aka West Town. Your palate should have that same sense of adventure, since nature dictates what’s on the menu. There are sausages made out of wild boar or venison, smoked beef-cheek tacos, and an entire section dedicated to alligator (hot fried gator legs anyone?). Imperial Lamian [¢] A restaurant group from far-flung Indonesia makes a move to North America, landing right here in the Windy City. The food, though, is less Balinese and more Chinese, with a special focus on chef Wang Hongjun’s lamian, or hand-pulled noodles. Designed by Jakarta-based interior architecture firm Metaphor, the décor’s birdcage pendant fixtures and handmade lattice screens offer a contemporary take on traditional tropes. While the dim sum and BBQ are sure to please a crowd, Instagram aficionados prefer the colorful xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, which come in an appealing rainbow of hues corresponding to flavors such as spicy szechuan, crab, truffle, and gruyère.

Leña Brava [$] Fire and ice is the theme of this Mexican (Baja to be precise) restaurant from seven-time James Beard Foundation Award winner Rick Bayless. Raw seafood (the ice) is plentiful, while everything else is cooked over a wood fire, from braised short ribs to butter-roasted plantains and char-seared octopus. The mode of cooking being rustic, designer Design Bureaux's Thomas Schlesser sought a balance with notes of luxury via saddle-leather chairs and walnut tables. He also made a feature of the exhibition-style chef’s kitchen, visible to all diners, and brought a sense of residential ease to the 6,000-square-foot space with colors and textures that recall the Oaxacan landscape, the region that influences the restaurant’s mezcal libations. 900 West Randolph Street; 312-733-1975.
MFK [¢] American food writer Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher, aka M.F.K., serves as the inspiration for this cozy 28-seat establishment. It even adopted her mantra: “First we eat. Then we do everything else.” The interior could be interpreted as an homage to her California home: light and bright with whitewashed walls and blond wood tables. Momotaro [$] As far as Japanese restaurants go, this one breaks the mold. Its 11,000 square feet, designed by AvroKO, offers multiple dining experiences—from the sushi bar, set in the middle of the main floor, akin to a buzzing stock exchange, to a subterranean izakaya, dedicated to craft cocktails and inspired by the back alleys of Tokyo. Food choices are equally diverse. The extensive menu offers nigiri, robata skewers, and hibachi, among countless other options. 820 West Lake Street; 312-733-4818.
Oriole [$] White linen tablecloths and George Nelson pendants grace the gritty brick of this tiny 28-seat restaurant, secreted down a back alley and accessed via a freight elevator. The fixed price of $175 gets you an extended tasting menu from chef Noah Sandoval, formerly of Michelin-starred Senza, encompassing around 15
delicacies from the simple (sourdough with cultured butter) to the refined (chicory custard with whiskey; Icelandic trout with smoke roe and marjoram). Finish off the night with pastry chef Genie Kwon’s almond croissant scented with cardamom and rose or gianduja chocolate paired with black currant, pretzel, and raclette. Parachute [$] Actual parachutes hang in the windows of this spare yet warm, 40-seat family-run restaurant. Fitting, as the menu lands in a new fusion niche: Korean American, with hints of French, Moroccan, and Indian. That means dishes like boudin noir with raspberry vinegar, black udon with squid, and spicy beef hot pot with black radish, clams, egg, and wild fern. Rural Society [¢/$] La Sociedad Rural Argentina, the annual celebration of culture and agriculture, is about to kick off in Buenos Aires. Chef Jose Garces used it as his inspiration for this steakhouse, the second outpost following one in Washington. Billowing canvas curtains reminiscent of fairground tents hang down from exposed rafters, while ephemera, photographs, and ribbons from the show fill the rustic space below. In addition to the menu’s steaks, cooked in the traditional grilled asado style, there are fugazza, Argentina's version of focaccia, and pastas. 455 North Park Drive; 312-840-6600.
The Betty [¢] To the owners of this lounge and restaurant, Betty is a rockabilly Southern gal from the 1950’s. That translates to a dimly lit wood-paneled space populated with old records, vintage glassware, and a taxidermied peacock presiding over the retro DOVE'S LUNCHEONETTE cash register. Betty also knows how to mix a mean cocktail, flavoring them with house-made juices and syrups.
