Directly following the keynote, IIDA will host a signing with Rockwell and his latest book, What If...? Wednesday morning’s speaker is Oana Stanescu, a founding partner of the New York–based studio Family who previously worked at Herzog & De Meuron, OMA, and SANAA. In addition to spearheading the firm’s European projects, Stanescu is also involved in +Pool, a Kickstarter-backed initiative to install a floating swimming pool in New York’s East River, and has designed tour sets and residential projects for none other than Kanye West. Vice president of design Mary Jo Miller revisited Le Corbusier’s color palette from the 1920’s, which became the springboard for the 50-SKU lineup. “It was especially exciting to see how something so classic can still be embodied by a line that is perfectly modern,” she says. One standout is the jacquard-woven Squiggle Stripe, in cotton-polyester-acrylic, which adds visual impact to large-scale surfaces. Other offerings include a solid-color coated polyurethane and a nubby polyesteracrylic, both bleach-cleanable; a comingling of polyester and solution-dyed nylon; and a leather accented with metallic pigments. space 387

Who said huge banks lack creative vision? Capital One throws curves at its New York regional headquarters, enlivening an otherwise stolid tower from 1967. The transformation involves the lobby, which offered generous square footage, 2,500, and a 24-foot ceiling but little else. “Man, is this stiff,” Gensler design principal Laurent Lisimachio said on first entering. “We saw an opportunity to give back to the neighborhood by creating something visually strong when viewed from outside.” That something turned out to entail two dynamic forms in contrasting materials—romancing the box and improving the vibe for corporate receptions and community events. Overhead, defining a warped plane modeled in both Rhinoceros and Inventor software, is an installation of castglass spheres. Each is suspended from electrical wire, wrapped in stainless steel, and contains a single white LED. The steel sculpture beneath was prefabricated in pieces, then welded together and blackened in situ. It springs from the white terrazzo floor astonishingly delicately, with just two rigid connection points. “Very tangent,” Lisimachio says. To fine-tune the complete composition, he produced a model at quarter-scale. The steel sculpture was represented by 3-D printed plastic. The 40-year career of Interior Design Hall of Fame member Eva Maddox began back when an office aspired to be nothing more than desks lined up in neat rows. “Now we create experiences to make people like to come to work, to be productive,” Maddox says. Her last major project as design principal, preceding her retirement, underscores the point. When a publicprivate partnership brought together Western Michigan University, the state government, and the city of Kalamazoo with a manufacturer, Newell Rubbermaid, to launch a design incubator, Maddox was handed a 40,000-square-foot building, constructed warehousestyle, and asked to turn it into a branded environment suitable for 130 international designers. “Given the 24-foot ceiling, we had to bring the scale down,” Maddox explains. A latticework canopy in clear-finished ash therefore hovers above the central circulation path extending most of the building’s 300-foot length. On one side, the canopy descends to front a run of design labs. Labs are identified by supersize numbers created by leaving out strategic sections of the ash strips, so the white-painted gypsum-board behind appears in the appropriate shapes. “The entire wall is a design feature,” she says. A smaller feature wall, comprising 1-by-3-inch blocks of end-grain Michigan ash mostly stained black, backs the desk in the reception area. task chair used to be judged by its mechanics, which were often exposed and celebrated. But Haworth is content to keep innovation under wraps. Collaborating with ITO Design, the office giant unveils Fern, modeled after the plant for which it’s named. The central spine is connected to an array of “fronds,” each calibrated to hold a different area of the back. As such, the chair provides total support: Testers raved that it seemed in sync with every movement. The assembly is constructed from high-performing polymers, and the base is die-cast aluminum.

Lievore, Jeannette Altherr, and Manel Molina hit upon a simple but tricky premise: The chair as intermediary between architecture and the human body. That concept manifests in Arcel, Lievore Altherr Molina’s multipurpose model that’s not too hard and not too soft. The interior is a curved, body-cradling shell. But outside, the faceted back establishes a dialogue with the structural components of the room. As such, the profile catches eyes from all sides— a feature especially welcome in conference settings. The aluminum base, polished or powder-coated, is fitted with a gas-lift cylinder. As for covers, choose any Bernhardt Textiles fabric, leather, or COM.

Their encounter spawned a lucrative six-piece collection. The two now reveal the next chapter of their collaboration. Blurring the contractresidential divide, the seven introductions flaunt tactility and detailing inspired by art and architecture, the latter expressed in Honest Square. The spectrumâ€™s calling card is coordination. Each color can be specified across five signature materials: heat-formable Varia Ecoresin, Chroma resin with 38 percent recycled content, Struttura lightweight resin, laminated Pressed Glass, and Koda XT, an ultra-durable polycarbonate. The system debuts today in the manufacturerâ€™s Mart showroom, re-envisioned by Standard Issue as an immersive gallery with color chips magnified into supersize discs.

At David Oakey Designs, memory lane leads to vintage textiles, a legacy celebrated in World Woven. Six styles of plank tiles, approximately 10 by 39 inches, are constructed entirely from recycled nylon, with fiberglass-reinforced recycled vinyl backing. Nubby bouclé is replicated in WW880, while freeform plaids distinguish WW895. Brendan Sodikoff is the brains behind upscale diner Au Cheval, Bavette’s Bar and Boeuf steakhouse, and Doughnut Vault, to name just a few of the 10-plus lauded eateries the prolific restaurateur has opened in six years. The newest addition to his portfolio combines his greatest hits in a food hall mash-up: Cheval’s legendary burger and Doughnut Vault’s baked goods coexist with a hot and cold salad bar, a pastrami station, an espresso counter, and small-batch cocktails. Décor is casualcomfy, 1970’s rec-room vibe: The charmingly mismatched TV lounge—type space is large enough to fit 235 patrons and a miniature putting green. “We’re giving the neighborhood what it’s been asking for,” Sodikoff dishes. As well as busy Neocongoers: It's less than two blocks from the Mart.

As the general public continues its fascination with culinary culture, a trade term has entered the layperson’s lexicon: "the family meal," which is what’s served to employees before a restaurant opens for dinner service. When chef Roland Liccioni was tapped for this brasserie inside the Hyatt Centric, he thought about which meals made his colleagues in the kitchen happiest, thus the menu’s mix of comforting French classics, such as omelettes, French dip, and steak frites. Operated by Quay Tao and Joey Beato, this restaurant appreciates meat in all its forms. To start, there is roasted bone marrow or a terrine of short rib and oxtail. Entrees include that caveman-esque cut, the porterhouse. A few delicate options also make the menu, like bouillabaisse with smoked tomato or tuna crudo. Birdcage pendants, mismatched mirrors, and blue-velvet seating lend the steakhouse a shabby chic ambiance.

Atwood [$] This seasonal American restaurant gets its name from the original architect of the structure it’s housed inside, the landmarked Reliance Building, built in 1895 by Charles B. Atwood. But it’s BCDG Studio that refreshed the current interiors with appealing white subway tile and tufted black-leather banquettes. The minimalism stops there. The menu serves up such homey flavorful classics as monkey bread, pan-seared chicken, and rhubarb upside-down cake. 1 West Washington Street; 312-368-1900.

Brindille [$] You might recognize this hot spot: It’s the 2015 James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design, which went to Bureau of Architecture and Design. Turns out, it’s a family affair. Principal Tom Nahabedian is a cousin of the chef, Carrie Nahabedian, and he outfitted the space in a serene arboreal theme (brindille is French for “twig”)—think branchlike Lindsey Adelman light fixtures and walnut accents redolent of a forest. Of course, the cuisine is equally exquisite: lobes of foie gras, caviar atop Cortes Island oysters, sweetbreads with cocoa—and those are just the appetizers. 534 North Clark Street; 312-595-1616.

Charlatan [¢] Looks old-school, but is actually quite post-modern. That’s pretty much the deal at this Italian joint. White-painted brickwork reads typical trattoria, but plumbing pipes fashioned into light fixtures and wallpaper patterned with dancing skeletons are more irreverent. That divergence from tradition also shines through in the pastas—truffle-flecked messinese topped with a sous-vide egg, charred-fennel tortellini sprinkled with pollen—all of which are made in-house and offered in sensible half portions. 1329 West Chicago Avenue; 312-818-2073.

Dove’s Luncheonette [¢] This 41-stool diner is run by the team behind the Publican and Nico Osteria. Walnut wainscoting, earth-tone tilework, an original tin ceiling, and a jukebox evoke Chicago's bygone era, when legendary local eateries Sophie’s Busy Bee and Leo’s Lunchroom existed. This menu, however, a fusion of Southern and Mexican, is no typical greasy spoon. Fried chicken comes smothered in chorizo-verde gravy. The ham-and-cheese sandwich is flecked with cilantro and salsa. Frontier [¢] Should you really want to break away from the Mart, head on over to what’s referred to as “the edge of civilization,” aka West Town. Your palate should have that same sense of adventure, since nature dictates what’s on the menu. There are sausages made out of wild boar or venison, smoked beef-cheek tacos, and an entire section dedicated to alligator (hot fried gator legs anyone?). Saddle up to the generous wooden bar in the rustic main dining room, or kick back in the open-air beer garden. 1072 North Milwaukee Avenue; 773-772-4322.

Imperial Lamian [¢] A restaurant group from far-flung Indonesia makes a move to North America, landing right here in the Windy City. The food, though, is less Balinese and more Chinese, with a special focus on chef Wang Hongjun’s lamian, or hand-pulled noodles. Designed by Jakarta-based interior architecture firm Metaphor, the décor’s birdcage pendant fixtures and handmade lattice screens offer a contemporary take on traditional tropes. While the dim sum and BBQ are sure to please a crowd, Instagram aficionados prefer the colorful xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, which come in an appealing rainbow of hues corresponding to flavors such as spicy szechuan, crab, truffle, and gruyère. 6 West Hubbard Street; 312-595-9440.

Leña Brava [$] Fire and ice is the theme of this Mexican (Baja to be precise) restaurant from seven-time James Beard Foundation Award winner Rick Bayless. Raw seafood (the ice) is plentiful, while everything else is cooked over a wood fire, from braised short ribs to butter-roasted plantains and char-seared octopus. The mode of cooking being rustic, designer Design Bureaux's Thomas Schlesser sought a balance with notes of luxury via saddle-leather chairs and walnut tables. He also made a feature of the exhibition-style chef’s kitchen, visible to all diners, and brought a sense of residential ease to the 6,000-square-foot space with colors and textures that recall the Oaxacan landscape, the region that influences the restaurant’s mezcal libations. 900 West Randolph Street; 312-733-1975.

MFK [¢] American food writer Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher, aka M.F.K., serves as the inspiration for this cozy 28-seat establishment. It even adopted her mantra: “First we eat. Then we do everything else.” The interior could be interpreted as an homage to her California home: light and bright with whitewashed walls and blond wood tables. But the cuisine is Spain-influenced, mostly seafood and unpretentious. 432 West Diversey Parkway; 773-857-2540.

Momotaro [$] As far as Japanese restaurants go, this one breaks the mold. Its 11,000 square feet, designed by AvroKO, offers multiple dining experiences—from the sushi bar, set in the middle of the main floor, akin to a buzzing stock exchange, to a subterranean izakaya, dedicated to craft cocktails and inspired by the back alleys of Tokyo. Food choices are equally diverse. The extensive menu offers nigiri, robata skewers, and hibachi, among countless other options. 820 West Lake Street; 312-733-4818.

Oriole [$] White linen tablecloths and George Nelson pendants grace the gritty brick of this tiny 28-seat restaurant, secreted down a back alley and accessed via a freight elevator. The fixed price of $175 gets you an extended tasting menu from chef Noah Sandoval, formerly of Michelin-starred Senza, encompassing around 15

delicacies from the simple (sourdough with cultured butter) to the refined (chicory custard with whiskey; Icelandic trout with smoke roe and marjoram). Finish off the night with pastry chef Genie Kwon’s almond croissant scented with cardamom and rose or gianduja chocolate paired with black currant, pretzel, and raclette. Every detail is considered, down to the house-made mints in the bathroom. This is fine dining indeed, but without the fusty atmosphere. 661 West Walnut Street; 312-943-6900.

Parachute [$] Actual parachutes hang in the windows of this spare yet warm, 40-seat family-run restaurant. Fitting, as the menu lands in a new fusion niche: Korean American, with hints of French, Moroccan, and Indian. That means dishes like boudin noir with raspberry vinegar, black udon with squid, and spicy beef hot pot with black radish, clams, egg, and wild fern. Rural Society [¢/$] La Sociedad Rural Argentina, the annual celebration of culture and agriculture, is about to kick off in Buenos Aires. Chef Jose Garces used it as his inspiration for this steakhouse, the second outpost following one in Washington. Billowing canvas curtains reminiscent of fairground tents hang down from exposed rafters, while ephemera, photographs, and ribbons from the show fill the rustic space below. In addition to the menu’s steaks, cooked in the traditional grilled asado style, there are fugazza, Argentina's version of focaccia, and pastas. 455 North Park Drive; 312-840-6600.

The Betty [¢] To the owners of this lounge and restaurant, Betty is a rockabilly Southern gal from the 1950’s. That translates to a dimly lit wood-paneled space populated with old records, vintage glassware, and a taxidermied peacock presiding over the retro DOVE'S LUNCHEONETTE cash register. Betty also knows how to mix a mean cocktail, flavoring them with house-made juices and syrups. Small plates like fried cauliflower and charred endive make it easy to stay late into the night—especially when the pianist starts knockin’ out good ‘ole rock ‘n’ roll. 839 West Fulton Street; 312-733-2222.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART

“estampas de la raza: contemporary prints from the romo collection” Vivid colors, bold forms, and icons reexamined are just some of the delights on show at the National Museum of Mexican Art. Organized thematically, the exhibition of more than 60 prints by 44 artists of Mexican descent investigates aspects of the Chicano movement, tradition, memory, and culture, from post-1960 American printmaking to the current day. It also surveys many of the best works to emerge from influential print shops. “design episodes: the modern chair”

INTERIOR DESIGN

The museum offers a teaser of its first permanent installation dedicated to contemporary architecture and design—opening fall 2017— by mounting this exhibition on the style and symbolism of the chair. Through September 11, works by icons such as Le Corbusier and Rudolph Schindler demonstrate how their pieces contributed to the evolution of a new aesthetic and redefined the design process, thanks to a shifted focus onto engineering and material science. 111 South Michigan Avenue; 312-443-3600; 10:30AM–5PM.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART CHICAGO

“johnston marklee: grid is a grid is a grid is a grid” Architecture firm Johnston Marklee’s next gig is to re-design the eatery at the MCA. But first, the Los Angeles–based studio crafted a temporary installation in the museum’s current café. Orthogonal elements, such as the repeating square graphic applied to café walls, play off the building’s gridded fenestration (by architect Josef Paul Kleihues) while hinting at the renovations to come. A lattice ceiling slices the double-height space in half, alluding to one potential outcome of the refresh: a mezzanine level to create art studios above and event space below. 220 East Chicago Avenue; 312-280-2660; 10AM–5PM, closed Monday.

Say “Abstract Expressionist” and painters such as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline probably spring to mind. Their contemporary, Aaron Siskind, made similar formal investigations—via photography. His black-and-white images of seaweed on sand and close-ups of walls with peeling and dripping paint toe the line between abstraction and representation. The Art Institute of Chicago has consistently collected Siskind’s work since 1955. This retrospective cherry-picks 100 of the most influential, including an energetic, gestural homage to the aforementioned Mr. Kline. 111 South Michigan Avenue; 312-443-3600; 10:30AM–5PM.

“kerry james marshall: mastry” Best known as a clever chronicler of the African American experience, Kerry James Marshall takes a no-holds-barred approach to confronting the position of black Americans through history, from slavery to contemporary times. His incisive portraits, comics, landscapes, and genrebending blends juxtapose with a newer series of abstractions (think Rorscharch blots) that are actually studied mimics of expressionist works. 220 East Chicago Avenue; 312- 280-2660; 10AM–5PM, closed Monday.

MARY & LEIGH BLOCK MUSEUM OF ART

“a feast of astonishments: charlotte moorman and the avant-garde, 1960’s–1980’s” Performance art cellist Charlotte Moorman took a radical approach to music, once playing while suspended by helium balloons over the Sydney Opera House in Australia. In another set, she wore miniature TVs strapped to her nude body—and was promptly arrested for public indecency. She was also the organizer behind almost every New York Avant Garde Festival between 1963 and 1980. To give insight into a figure integral to seventies counterculture, curator Lisa Corrin gathered film clips, snapshots, music sores, audio recordings, and performance props from Moorman’s career, the vast majority never before exhibited. Cellos made from neon, bombs, and syringes are also on display, as are several works by her frequent collaborator, seminal video artist Nam June Paik. 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston; 847-491-4000; 10AM–5PM, open until 8PM Wednesday through Friday, closed Monday.
