Neolith® is an architectural skin capable of dressing up any interior or exterior commercial or residential space where it’s applied from floors and walls to kitchen countertops, facades and even furniture. The large format minimizes the number of joints in cladding for decorative and hygiene benefits. The minimal thickness allows it to be directly applied to an already existing surface without the need for prior removal.

It’s a low-maintenance material given its special resistance to scratches, stains, chemicals, high temperatures and traffic. Neolith® also provides the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality given its unlimited possibilities and capacity to resemble all-natural materials like stone, wood and metal. Whether a homeowner has space limitations that don’t allow for a traditional hood, or views and sight lines they don’t want blocked, Zephyr delivers customized solutions to suit every ventilation need and want. Drawing from its 20 years of innovation in design, discovery and care, Zephyr presents the Lift Downdraft, the ultimate solution to kitchen ventilation that can discreetly hide behind the Cooktop, Cooktop and Oven, Range Top or Range. With its unbeatable power and performance, and a sleek design, Lift complements every kitchen style. Available in 30- and 36-inch widths, the space-efficient Lift rises to the occasion with just the touch of a button. “Many downdraft models are not compatible with multiple cooking appliance combinations,” president Luke Siow says. “Lift offers unlimited design flexibility with its Four-Way Ducting, which allows the installer to duct the hood out the front, side, rear or bottom.” Lookswise, the Lift also stands out with dual-level BriteStrip™ LED lighting, a welded and polished body, and an 18-inch chimney rise designed to ensure even the largest pots and pans will be properly ventilated.

THE LIFT DOWNDRAFT RISES TO THE OCCASION PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS The Lift Downdraft features Tri-Capture Zones that ensure all smoke, grease and odors are eliminated through three entry points, and Four-Way Ducting that gives the user the flexibility to vent in multiple directions, compatible with all blower options. RADAR / IN CONVERSATION

Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH

Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.

LX_COM31_Radar_InConversation.indd 96

In the hallway of the Cocoon House, translucent colored skylights are designed to enhance the experience in each space. Colors range from vermilion red, signaling sunset and rest, above the master bedroom, to deep yellow, indicating zenith and activity, near the living room.

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO

The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. This season, bringing the revival full circle, the last four creekside cottages reopen, beckoning guests with bird song and a piece of history embalmed with great care. “It’s a healing moment,” notes Mineau. “This particular story is just one of many past and many chapters to come.”

Verdant gardens, groves of olive and citrus trees, and an array of California vernacular guest bungalows distinguish the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Appleton Partners worked to restore and preserve its singular sense of place following mudslides exacerbated by the Thomas Fire.

A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK

The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”

LX_COM31_Radar_Buzz.indd 100

Each home at Splinter Creek sits upon 2 to 18 private acres, offering buyers seclusion and an immersion with the raw natural surroundings— the latter of which architecture principal David Lang describes as “a necessity for well-being.”

“I tend to favor color in my interior design work, but my go-to favorite neutral is Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore. It’s crisp and clean.”

“Pratt & Lambert Timidity is my No. 1 choice. My entire New York City apartment is painted in it, including the ceilings. It’s an elusive and beautiful khaki shade.”

“Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball is a true white with just enough warmth. I used it for my design studio and shop. I love that it feels bright, but not too stark.”

–JOE LUCAS

–THOMAS O’BRIEN

–SARAH BARTHOLOMEW

“For as long as I can remember, Benjamin Moore White Dove has been a mainstay for designers. It is a classic, soft hue that goes with everything, and we use it constantly for trim and cabinetry.”

“Even when using a base color, it’s important to define the story and point of view. I gravitate toward gray and creamy tones, like Dover White by Sherwin-Williams, to better support surrounding layers of color.”

“Farrow & Ball Pointing is perfect for living spaces. It’s the loveliest soft white that doesn’t read too austere or brilliant. It works well in modern and traditional applications as well as for trim!”

PARADISE found THE HORSE SHOE FARM

What was your vision for The Horse Shoe Farm? I first looked at the highest and best use and what to do in the area. I wanted to change the name and identity. But my son said, ‘Dad, don’t develop this property. Let’s turn it into something special.’ ” What makes staying at The Horse Shoe Farm a five-star experience? It starts with an 85-acre property with trails you can walk or bicycle. We’re on a bend of the French Broad River—the third-oldest in the world. We bring in incredible chefs and are surrounded by farms for fresh produce and eggs and have the purest drinking water from our well. We also use bed linens by Kassatex in New York.

The rooms have a residential feel. I’m an avid collector of unique objects from around the world and now I finally have a place for them. Every piece has a story behind it. For example, a friend donated a spectacular Civil War mirror; it’s a major collector’s piece. Tell us about the art. We have Warhol-influenced paintings of horses and Native Americans I commissioned from David Banegas, an artist I found on the Miami River 20 years ago. Also, contributions from my daughter, Ashley, who is an art dealer. We’ve turned some of the barns into artist studios to host resident artists—or just anyone who wants to grab an easel and create.

John Turchin hails from a long line of hospitable folks: His family first came to Miami in the 1920s and proceeded to develop more than 200 buildings, including hotels, before developing turnkey lifestyle properties in Banner Elk, North Carolina, throughout the aughts. He got to work on his next labor of love, farm-to-table resort The Horse Shoe Farm in Hendersonville, North Carolina, in 2017. Turchin teamed up with design mind John Rhem to enhance the place, then tapped his own son, Jordan, to steward it forward. Here, Turchin tells Luxe why everyone wants to visit. thehorseshoefarm.com

POST MASTER @heatherchadduck

WHO: With roots in Virginia and Arkansas, Heather Chadduck Hillegas studied fine arts at the Sorbonne in Paris, then moved to Birmingham in 2004. She’s a photo stylist, proven tastemaker and an avid traveler currently taking on Southeast Asia. WHAT: Combining antiques, patterns and judicious color, Chadduck Hillegas’ interiors have a timeless, approachable quality. Her to-the-trade textiles, hand-printed on Belgian linen, are sold in six showrooms worldwide. 086 / luxesource.com

WHY: With a background in magazine publishing and a husband in editorial and fine-art photography, she appreciates the power of strong imagery—a fact that’s evident in her refined and inviting Instagram feed. IN HER WORDS: “We launched a new fabric in April, Thistleton, named for my aunt’s farm in Virginia and the prickly flowering plants that pepper the mountains. It’s a muted large-scale print on linen, tea-dyed for a vintage look. I can’t wait to see it as drapery or upholstered on a wing chair!” WRITTEN BY KATE ABNEY

TALKING SHOP INTERIORS MARKET

An institution founded by Atlanta designer Kathy Guyton in 1992, Interiors Market is a treasure trove of everything from creamware to scenic paintings, and a favorite of those who love the thrill of the hunt. Georgia native Milton Roberts began working there at 21, becoming a beloved figure at the fixture on Bennett Street. Upon purchasing Interiors Market in 2017, Roberts and partner Greg Ashby embarked on a cleanup effort, carefully curating the space and bringing in new dealers to keep things dynamic. Nearly 20 years later, Roberts tells Luxe how he’s reinvigorating Interiors Market for a new era. interiorsmarket.com

HOMEGROWN FRINGE MARKET

In Eatonton, Georgia, a tiny town on the edge of Lake Oconee, Fringe Market is quietly commanding the high-end passementerie industry. In 2012, industry veteran Mark Crosby teamed up with his wife, Melanie, to found what is today the United States’ only manufacturer remaining in the category—touting a nimble business model that allows Fringe Market to release new SKUs every few weeks. All manner of cords, tapes, braids, gimp, fringe and tassels are produced on state-of-the-art and proprietary machines using superlative silks, wool, jute, cotton, mohair and more. A kaleidoscope of stylish hues offered on standard, plus countless custom color options, lend themselves to a litany of decorating schemes appreciated by top-shelf talents throughout the Southeast (Sarah Bartholomew, James Michael Howard and Tami Ramsay, to name a few). Blue-chip collaborations with leading national brands also abound: Century Furniture, Highland House, Vanguard and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, among them. fringemarket.com

Has traffic shifted as a result? When I first took over, we had 13 dealers, and only three that were designer go-tos. Now we have 35, a waiting list of 30 just to get a booth, and our designers visit every booth in the Market. We’ve always done a heavy design business, but the frequency of their purchases has gone up

and we’re seeing them regularly again— once or twice a week instead of six times per year—because now they know there will be something new to see every time. Who are some of the designers and dealers renting space from you? Jared Hughes, Melanie Turner, Jane Marsden and Jenny Kramer from Greenville, South Carolina. We have a few of our own booths. And we also sell on Chairish. What’s next? We’re finalizing our new website and we might be looking for a satellite location elsewhere in the city— wink, wink—as a nod to Interiors Market II, which we operated from 2002 to 2006. It will have the same name and heart, just a slightly different concept. Stay tuned! talking shop photos: courtesy interiors market. homegrown photos: melanie a. cosby, fringe market.

How have you changed Interiors Market since taking the helm? Greg and I have spent the last three years completely renovating the building. On the exterior, we ripped off the deck, planted a garden, painted and added Bermuda shutters. Inside, we took out everything and started fresh, removing walls, painting the walls and floors white, and remerchandising everything.

MEET the MAKERS

Ranging from trinket boxes, bookends and brackets to full-scale furnishings in oxidized curly walnut, beech, sapwood and quarter-sawn ash, each of Spivey’s pieces is made from found or repurposed materials. He explains that his Durham, North Carolina-based Radvalley Designs contrasts with “fast furniture” thanks to hand-cut joinery and quiet details. Spivey is more interested in making an impact than turning around quick commissions, as evidenced in a console he spent a year designing and building on spec. Despite this slow philosophy, he still relishes working directly with end users because, “the closer I get to the people I design for, the more harmonious a finished project will feel.” radvalleydesigns.com

KRISTOPHER SPIVEY

▲ JILL SEALE This Charlotte-based talent studied marbling with the masters in Florence, and then adapted the ancient art to a modern industry, decoupaging her papers onto decorative trays and digitizing them for dramatic wallcoverings and textiles that celebrate spontaneous creation. Marbling is a way of making “order out of chaos,” says the owner of Jill Seale Design Studio, noting how the water and paints move together to mimic the patterns of nature—“a universal language of beauty.” Seale’s proximity to a wealth of American manufacturers in North Carolina has led to collections with the likes of Wesley Hall, Port 68, Avasa Home and Company C. jillseale.com

JEREMY KAMIYA Originally from Durham, furniture importer-turned-maker Kamiya moved to High Point in 2019 to be closer to the industry, most recently developing a new desk and chair for the Spring Market. “My work slants minimalist-modern with a hint of the studio movement,” notes Kamiya Furniture proprietor Jeremy Kamiya. “I’m self-taught, so I was never influenced to develop a standard of craftsmanship other than my own.” Precision, proper execution and structural integrity inform his methods, which emphasize the beauty of book-matched natural woods—mostly maple, cherry and walnut—using classic joinery techniques. kamiyafurniture.com

CARTER ELLIS Before founding his collaborative Chattanooga workshop, Ellis Table Co. in 2018, Ellis studied under a British master craftsman who trained at Christie’s in London, restoring pieces up to 400 years old. For this reason, Ellis has great respect for furnishings that stand the test of time, his own work crafted from reclaimed or sustainable walnut, white oak, maple and rainbow poplar assembled via traditional joinery rather than metal fasteners. They channel French country, Japanese, Scandinavian and Shaker stylings, a spirit perhaps best exemplified by his Laurel table (shown) and coordinating benches— one with clean lines, another with a spindle back. ellistable.com

ITINERARY OLIVIA BROCK

Raised in Darien, Connecticut, Olivia Brock earned a master’s in historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania before forming her preservation-minded design firm, Torrance Mitchell Designs, upon moving to Charleston in 2012. Touting projects in the Lowcountry, Long Island, Connecticut and New York, Brock serves as trustee at both the Historic Charleston Foundation and Middleton Place and sits on the Palladian Circle Committee for Drayton Hall. “I’m such a proponent of history and culture that these house museums are very important to me,” says Brock, who’s been heavily involved with the annual Charleston Antique Show for the past six years. Here, Luxe gets a glimpse of the Holy City through her historically sensitive lens. torrancemitchell.com

STAY

Zero George: The Zero George (top, right) is one of few places to have the postcard experience in Charleston. The team at Easton Events, who operate the hotel, have done a beautiful job decorating it. The service is superb—my husband and I stayed there during one of our moves—and the location is especially convenient for seeing performances at the Gaillard or shopping on King Street. zerogeorge.com

PLAY

Middleton Place: Located on Ashley River Road, a winding route framed by live oaks and Spanish moss, it’s home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens. There’s a camellia walk (center, right), an azalea walk, a rose garden and a stunning landscape that terraces down to the Ashley River. Around

this time of year, the greensward, which is the big lawn out front, is filled with spring lambs. There’s a stable yard with blacksmith demonstrations and horses, with pigs and peacocks never far. The restaurant serves organic produce grown on site, and the inn is perfect for staycations. middletonplace.org

EAT

The Living Room at the Dewberry: I love the lobby bar (bottom, right) because it isn’t necessarily what people expect of Charleston. It’s fun to post up for a few hours in the afternoon or meet people for drinks after work. You can get dressed up and not feel silly about it; at any moment it feels like a character from Mad Men could waltz in. They serve a cocktail called the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. It’s a rum drink, and it’s delicious. thedewberrycharleston.com

SHOP

Amanda Lindroth: New to Charleston as of last spring (top, left), it’s a great pop of color on Upper King Street. If you’re throwing a dinner party and bored with all your napkins or need some new glassware, you can find them here last minute, along with fantastic rattan-wrapped hurricanes to toss palm leaves into. My friend Blake Sams, an insanely talented event designer, draped the fabric for the tented ceiling, which is phenomenal. amandalindroth.com Vieuxtemps: This is my hostess gift go-to for Sferra cocktail napkins, coffee table books, beautiful objects and sometimes Christmas ornaments. The location on Lower King is quite convenient to my home on Water Street. I’m obsessed with china—I think it’s in the water here, something my Northeastern mom doesn’t always get. vieuxtemps.net

Built in 1820 for a merchant, and soon after purchased by Governor William Aiken Jr., whose family owned the home for 142 years, the Aiken-Rhett house offers a glimpse into antebellum and post-war life in Charleston. Now under the stewardship of the Historic Charleston Foundation, the organization is dedicated to sharing the stories of the enslaved men, women and children who maintained the estate, while also showcasing furniture, architecture and finishes from the mid-19th century.

BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

HOLLYHOCK HOUSE, LOS ANGELES

Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

MIAMI MOMENT VIZCAYA MUSEUM AND GARDENS, MIAMI

Just south of downtown Miami overlooking Biscayne Bay stands the otherworldly Vizcaya estate. Owner and businessman James Deering envisioned the 1920s property as a modern and subtropical interpretation of 18th-century Italian villas. Despite its historical inspiration, the waterfront estate was constructed with modern techniques and technology for the time. Inside, old and new influences merge, such as Baroque and Renaissance antiques paired with works by contemporary artists.

FINE GRAIN WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

Move over white. Brown is back—think upholstered textiles, painted living room walls and, specifically, kitchens and baths with rich wood elements. While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Certain woods, such as walnut, have a beautiful depth to them that can easily cross boundaries between contemporary and traditional design. As shown here, it really shines when paired with other textures and tones.

Court Atkins Group Design Director Deborah Van Plew worked with Element Construction to create this natural wood-inspired Bluffton, South Carolina, kitchen. The walnut cabinetry is by Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry from Palmetto Cabinet Studio. Swaim stools pull up to the island across from a Wolf range, while the side countertops are in Fresh Concrete by Caesarstone.

PERFECT PLANKS

Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com

What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to

be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

HIGH STYLE

CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK In the nearly 30 years since Christopher Peacock founded his eponymous luxury cabinetry company, he’s seen kitchen trends come and go, but wellmade, straightforward designs will always stand the test of time. For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he

approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,

the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

WOODEN WONDER

MARIE FLANIGAN

photos: julie soefer.

In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com

For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.

This spectacular Houston bathroom, designed by Marie Flanigan alongside Kelsey Grant and Sydney Manning, features Ralph Lauren sconces from Visual Comfort & Co. and an Urban Electric pendant. A Palecek chair completes the vanity area.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS

SHANNON RAE INTERIORS Atlanta, welcome Shannon Rae Interiors. After years of success designing from Dallas—for projects there and in California, Michigan and Georgia—Shannon Green relocated to the Big Peach last year. The move was motivated by her desire to be closer to family (namely her young nephews), and this fact proves characteristic for Green. “I value connection with others above all else, in work and life,” she shares. “Relationships are what make me feel like I am getting the most I can out of life; they feed my soul. And, I believe they are essential to great design.” Specializing in luxury, custom residential homes, Green and her team are known for classic, clean lines with a soft contemporary undertone. Attention to detail, too, defines their projects. Cabinet layouts, tile and ceiling designs, lighting plans and custom furniture … it’s all carefully bespoke in Shannon Rae spaces. Hence, the homeowner is a paramount part of the process. “I involve my clients from the outset,” Green says. “I want to know what elements they have seen online or in other homes that they want to incorporate, what they value investing in (fine art, antiques, etc.), if they dance on their furniture or pride themselves on using a coaster beneath every sippy cup.”

“ Each project feels alive, livable and tailored.”

Ask the Expert What inspires you? My clients! Your home should reflect your personality and the way you live. The biggest compliment is when family and friends come over for the first time and say, ‘Wow! This is so you!’ That is what drives my process. I need my clients to fall in love with their space. It is not just a beautiful room for my portfolio. What project would you love to take on? One in Florence, Italy. Hands down, it is my favorite place in the world, and if I can manage to get a client there, I will have checked off the first thing on my design bucket list. What’s next? My next big goal is to develop a wallpaper line. Wallpaper is my favorite. I’d wallpaper an entire home if a client would let me. I’m not joking!

An eight-story townhouse offered Westport, Connecticut-based architect Roger Ferris a unique opportunity to design a statement staircase. Twelve feet in diameter and comprised of seamless white Corian cladding with white oak treads, the monumental structure was fabricated as a single piece off-site and in turn, lowered in through the roof. Notes Ferris, “It acts as a reinterpretation of a common feature that is well conceived and artfully executed.” ferrisarch.com

STRENGTH IN SIMPLICITY “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400s, the mantra has rung true for centuries, echoed in all areas of art and culture, and perhaps none so much as architecture, a field distinguished by thoughtful restraint and fortitude. The next few pages showcase an array of timely architectural inspiration unified by clean lines, powerful function and understated wow-factor. To open the conversation, look no further than this sculptural staircase by architect Roger Ferris—a testament to the enduring dazzle of a less is more approach.

MAJOR PANE

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

LIGHTNESS of BEING

In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. The skylight creates a feeling of warmth and a connection to the outdoors where you wouldn’t expect it.” mdarch.net

Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. Shown here, the travertine and copper Chord Daybed—inspired by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels—highlights their dynamic point of view. “We approach furniture similarly to architecture,” says Purnell. “We analyze each piece in terms of materiality, color and texture, and then we synthesize those ideas with more logical form and function requirements.” launlosangeles.com

“Originally, this space was going to be an office for the husband. However, the children fell in love and commandeered it within days of wallpapering,” shares architect Rafe Churchill of this cozy bonus room. Situated in the front portico of the Stanford White Award-winning Greek Revival he built in Sharon, Connecticut,

the space's softly sloping eaves, herringbone linen-clad walls and ceiling, and a fanlight window with views spanning 40 miles create an inspiring retreat for all ages. Notes Churchill, “We wanted to embrace the pastoral setting and historical location while creating a family home conducive to contemporary living.” hendrickschurchill.com

Pivotal MOMENT

For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design

6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. This custom prototype—a simplified floral frieze for G.P. Schafer Architect—speaks to the medium’s fresh face for the new decade. hyde-park.com

After researching vintage and international public libraries, a bibliophilic couple presented Stuart Silk Architects with an unusual ask for their Issaquah, Washington, lake house: a doublestory library. Enamored with the brief, plans were drawn for a dramatic slate-toned sanctuary with dark herringbone floors. To the right of the entryway, a powder-coated steel spiral staircase fabricated by Northwest Stair & Rail, Inc. weaves to the upper level of the library, which hosts more shelves of books, a comfy, tucked-away reading nook, and a secret passageway to the master bedroom. stuartsilk.com

Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. My hope was to happily mix the old building bones with new finishes and furniture,” Young notes. youngandfrances.com

Few wall treatments rival the grandeur of marble fluting, an architectural tradition passed down and reimagined for millenia. For a modern spin, consider Pinnacle, new from Artistic Tile, which trades classical fluting associations for CNC-cut triangular grooves— an intriguing contrast against the marbles’ natural veining. Available in three stones—Bianco Dolomiti, Nero (above, left) and Calacatta Gold (above, right) marble—the tiles can read bold and graphic or soft and textural, making them a dimensional addition to interiors of any flavor. artistictile.com

T

ucked behind a ramble of untamed Kiawah Island dunes and swept by salted Atlantic breezes, a stately residence stretches across a triple lot on the South Carolina coast—a site simultaneously grand, yet intimate. Cueing to the celebrated Shingle-style architecture of the Northeast— namely the illustrious Montauk and Southampton dwellings of McKim, Mead & White—architect Roger Seifter had authored the home’s original plans back in 1996, so he was already intimately familiar with the building when the new owners asked him to return for its recent renovation. Hoping for a project with twin familiarities, the couple happily tapped Tammy Connor, their designer of more than 12 years, for the interiors. “Each time we have worked with Tammy, we’ve found the process enormously rewarding,” the wife expresses. “We have developed a shorthand in our process, and this comes from her knowing that we want our homes to be warm, welcoming and easy.” Although the project marked Seifter’s first time working with the clients, he understood their needs just as innately. “They wanted a team with a historic knowledge of the house and an empathy for it,” explains the architect, who experienced quite a case of déjà vu upon touring it for the first time with its new owners. Because the home had been unaltered over the years, “it was a bit like a time warp,” he recounts. “I couldn’t help but look around with a critical eye; the residence had aged very well, but I noticed things I might have done differently. In my mind, this was a chance to make up for missed opportunities.” Observing how well the original building materials had weathered, Seifter—along with senior associates Chris Dickson and Victoria Baran—opted to retain the home’s rich mahogany trim and cedar shingles, even returning to the same fabricator who fashioned its original windows to ensure a match in style and quality. Spearheading these improvements was general contractor Nicholas T. Grossman, who, though not a native Carolinian, brought seasoned knowledge of the subtropical climate and its oft-unforgiving conditions, suggesting treatments for the exterior that would

LX_NAT54_HOM_Connor_SE07pickup_12.indd 170

safeguard the residence from the elements. Indoors, Seifter says, “Nick provided a running commentary on how to best tailor the modern systems to combat the island’s frequently oppressive heat and humidity.” Because lifestyles had changed since the first set of plans were drawn decades ago, the interior architecture needed tweaking to improve flow and set the stage for casual entertaining. So, too, did the design team answer the clients’ request for a dedicated pool room. “It was a sizable addition,” explains Seifter. “And since we didn’t want it to look like ‘the tail was wagging the dog,’ we placed it behind the pergola.” While her collaborators continued to peel away dated elements, Connor and senior designer Lauren Jones worked closely on interior details. Since the designer counts the Shingle style among her favorite disciplines, the envelope of the house delighted her. “It’s exciting when the architecture falls in line with the history of a vernacular,” Connor notes. “If you understand where the home is coming from architecturally, it will tell you where it needs to go.” To complement its Arts & Crafts classicism, Connor sourced furnishings she knew would feel soulful. “We brought in antiques to echo the timelessness we knew the rooms could express,” she says. “We were after serenity because the clients wanted a respite from city life in the Northeast. We took our cues from nature, letting the beach and the landscape drive interior design decisions.” Subtle coastal references range from grass-cloth wallcoverings and coral objets d’art to a hanging bed punctuating the spacious wraparound porch. Since the home is essentially one room deep, “every room has a unique view,” Seifter adds. Echoes the wife: “I never wanted to lose sight of the idea that the beach is calling you, no matter where you are in the house.” Landscape architect Cindy Cline pinpointed ways to enhance these picturesque surroundings. “The renovated home sits beautifully on its site, so we created a plan that would better relate to its new proportions,” she explains. An allée of elm trees now leads to a formal drive court where potted lemon trees greet guests at the door. A generous lawn complements the residence’s improved sense of grandeur before rolling landforms planted with native grasses that direct the eye toward a protected dunescape. In the end, the venture achieved precisely what Seifter had hoped for: a home that will endure for decades more. Connor believes the project’s tranquil countenance comes from design professionals who checked their egos at the door, as well as owners who were passionate about creating an extraordinary refuge. For Connor’s longtime clients, the success of the residence came as no surprise. “Tammy has a way of gently guiding me to try something I couldn’t have imagined, and I never regret those choices,” says the wife. “She and Roger created beautiful and relaxed spaces throughout the house, and it’s always amazing to me how you can look around and find that no detail is left undone— without being overdone.” Done and done, indeed.

The entryway of this Kiawah Island, South Carolina, vacation home was designed to emulate the “living halls” of iconic Shingle-style houses. One of numerous architectural details original to the residence, the inglenook “gives the entry hall a purpose beyond walking through it,” says architect Roger Seifter. Here, a glass bell jar lantern by Formations hangs above a circa-1830 English mahogany table, both from 1stdibs.

In the living room of this Nashville home, designer Rachel Halvorson paired Hickory Chair’s Bistro banquette with a vintage club chair in green mohair from Illuminati Antiques in Houston. Flanked by a duo of midcentury brass lamps from Garden Variety Design, a mixed-media piece by Raleigh artist Jason Craighead joins a Bobby McAlpine-designed ottoman by Lee Industries and a walnut cocktail table from Atlanta’s Holland MacRae.

I

f a general contractor’s own home is any indication of the level of detail delivered to clients, Nathan Lyons’ may be Nashville’s best example. From the beginning, he and his wife, Keri, knew they didn’t want their new residence to feel, well, new. Building in the traditional enclave of Belle Meade would mean responding to the neighborhood’s classic touches, but, “when it came time to plan the house, we decided we wanted something a little different,” Lyons says. “So, we looked for a team that would share our vision and help us push the envelope a bit.” That search led Lyons to residential designer Richard Long and designer Rachel Halvorson—talents he viewed as fellow risk-takers. In joining the project, Long says, he felt a similar sense of alignment: “Nathan was very open to trying new things and wanted to create something special that would honor the history of the neighborhood while looking forward at the same time.” As homeowner and general contractor, Lyons was naturally very involved in specification of materials and architectural elements, wanting each to feel storied and special. “I’ve always been drawn to revitalization, whether restoring a home or commercial project,” he says, pointing to his penchants for classicism and quality. So, the hallmarks Long specified for the home transcend any single discipline, ranging from vaulted ceiling beams and Shaker-style millwork to Roman columns, leaded-glass windows and a Tudor-influenced front door that set the tone for the entire residence. “It looks like it could be 150 years old,” Lyons says, “but set against stark white stucco and blackened steel windows, it takes on a more contemporary feel.” luxesource.com / 183

Residential designer Richard Long incorporated steel doors to establish a sense of flow between the home’s interior and exterior realms. “The height and simplicity of the French doors bring a modern feel to the more traditional materials, like the reclaimed oak floors,” he says. The framed painting is from homeowners Nathan and Keri Lyons’ personal collection.

3/31/20 1:51 PM

Just beyond that stately front door, antique Spanish marble tiles, laid in a checkerboard pattern, make a case for patina against a sweeping staircase with a wrought iron and unlacquered bronze railing. “The tile itself feels like a form of art,” Lyons says. “Keri and I love reclaimed as much as we do sleek, modern touches, and when we saw this, we knew it was the right fit for this house.” Lyons’ expertise also was instrumental when liaising with Long and landscape architect Gavin Duke—along with project manager Mamie Finch—on the home’s private interior terrace and pool. Opening the doors permits seasonably mild breezes to pass all the way through, prompting Long’s comparison of the home to a Bahamian retreat. The addition of casement windows underscores this resort-like quality.

“The pool is centered on our master bedroom and directly under the windows,” Lyons says. “You could jump right in.” Balancing elegance with restraint, Halvorson was happy to let Long’s architecture act as protagonist, selecting well-edited furnishings and art that are high impact yet never scenestealing. Responding to the couple’s love for historic, she chose pieces that would read as romantic and old world—but with modern twists. “The only way for a new house to feel old and timeless is for it to look collected over time,” the designer says. “We pulled in layers—vintage elements for patina; art that appears to have been gathered over the years.” Referencing an array of works culled across the Southeast, Lyons adds: “Rachel really opened our eyes to the whole art world; a majority of the pieces you see were selected by her.”

Long describes the home’s architectural style as a “Mediterranean manor befitting Belle Meade,” noting that its scale feels welcoming, never imposing. Long teamed up with Lyons, who was the general contractor, and landscape architect Gavin Duke to design the interior terrace and pool. Come nightfall, gas lanterns by Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights lend an alluring glow.

Supporting the art and softening the home’s high-contrast bones is an unexpected palette. “I wanted rich, cozy, earthy colors to warm the cool, clean lines of the house,” says Halvorson, describing how strokes of olive green, camel, cognac and rust meander throughout, punctuating the predominantly black and white background with painterly depth. “We pulled tobacco velvets, the color of the bottom of the ocean, the deepest bittersweet chocolate brown; I like colors that can’t be summed up in one word.” Highly reflective surfaces mix with ones Halvorson describes as “tumbled and warm”—to the point that Lyons and Keri let their two young children ride their bikes around the kitchen’s rustic limestone floors. “Keri and I appreciate that things will scratch and tarnish,” Lyons explains. “We want our home to feel like it’s aging naturally and has character.” While homework might be tackled at the kitchen table, the cocooning dining room—with its radiated corners and cradling curved banquet—is tailor-made for the adults, who love to entertain. “We wanted it to feel like a Parisian café,” he says of the speakeasy-like space. If the master bedroom offers direct connection to the pool and terrace, then this lounge provides a front-row seat for another of Duke and Finch’s elegant concepts: a pea gravel courtyard punctuated by plantings of Fastigiata European hornbeams and Green Velvet boxwoods. “Just imagine what this house would be without its landscaping,” Long expresses, praising a team effort to realize the couple’s dream retreat. “The tumbled stone, the perfectly aligned trees in the courtyard combine with a contrast of materials and colors for a home where the family can grow and entertain for years to come.”

A tiered Fortuny chandelier sets a romantic tone in the master bedroom, where a Louis XVI canopy bed from Tara Shaw in New Orleans is softened by a wall of Schumacher linen draperies and a coverlet made from a Gretchen Bellinger chenille with Rose Tarlow trim. A Tom Brydelsky diptych from Tinney Contemporary hangs above the limestone fireplace.

Complementing a rug from Hallamar Rugs, a mixed-media encaustic by Catherine Erb, through David Lusk Gallery, creates a dreamlike scene in the master bathroom. A Remains Lighting Sorenson pendant from Jim Thompson in Atlanta hangs above Laura Kirar’s freestanding tub for Kallista, while custom cabinetry by Old Town Millwork, painted Sherwin-Williams’ Repose Gray, keeps the look serene.

andy feet feel just right to Anne Darby Parker. As soon as the weather warms up, she moves her easel outside of her Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, studio and paints in the sand and sun. “That’s where I do my best work,” says the Lowcountry native, who grew up on neighboring Isle of Palms, summered on Kiawah Island and has lived most of her life surrounded by water. Here, the tidal rhythms, gentle sea breeze and laughing gulls are constants that anchor her artistic sensibilities. Despite a background in plein air painting, Parker’s landscapes are emotional, not representational, and her work is focused on the body and, more specifically, the gestural female form. “For a while I was combining plein air and figurative together, but there’s something about the live model that I respond to,” Parker says. “I’m absorbing and translating her information and energy; it’s like entering a meditative space, a sort of flow.” Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that Parker’s semiabstract works are an ode to a feminine strength and sensuality—qualities she links to the warmth and tenacity of her area’s wind-swept barrier islands. Although Parker took up knitting as her original artistic pursuit at age 3, it wasn’t until her husband’s studies at Harvard brought them to Boston that she finally entered the creative field—as a professional black-and-white portrait photographer. Before long, though, she was painting atop her photos, cutting them up and collaging. “I was just fighting the urge to paint,” admits the mother of three, who is currently represented at Charleston Artist Collective, Birmingham’s Gallery 1930 and Bee Street Gallery in Dallas. Fifteen years later, she’s finding freedom in experimenting with mixed media on larger canvases, beginning with acrylic and graphite before adding final “lushness” with oil. In a recent series, she embraced nonclassical hues like hot pink. Likewise, her instinct for art placement in the context of interiors is on full view within the turnof-the-century cottage she shares with her husband, Scott Parker, an urban planner and landscape architect at Charleston-based DesignWorks. “One of my favorite things is taking a car-load of paintings to someone’s home and helping them see what I see. I believe bathrooms and kitchens should have great art; forgotten little corners with the right light should have just the right piece,” she says. “I have this sense of where paintings would look really good—it thrills me.”

Capturing a posed model in-studio (opposite) brings energy and sensuality to South Carolina artist Anne Darby Parker’s paintings. Lately, she likes to paint with graphite and acrylic before adding final “lushness” with oils. “I always obey the color wheel,” says Parker. The artist’s sunlit Sullivan’s Island studio is a safe harbor for her expressive style (bottom).

SECOND NATURE A DESIGNER DISTILLS AN EARTHY VISION FOR A FAMILY’S COASTAL SOUTH CAROLINA RETREAT. WRITTEN BY KELSEY MULVEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE CHARLOTTE

In the living room of this light-splashed Palmetto Bluff home, designer Cortney Bishop complemented architect H. Pearce Scott’s fireplace design with a scagliola mantel by François & Co. A pair of Verellen’s Clarence sofas, perched atop a hand-knotted rug from Amadi Carpets in West Hollywood, joins Kelly Wearstler’s Sonara Swivel chairs for EJ Victor—whose fluid movements increase the feeling of openness to the adjoining kitchen. The drapery panels feature Zak+Fox’s cross-hatched Bamako linen.

C

radled by a lush subtropical landscape and the May River hugging its perimeter, Palmetto Bluff epitomizes the South Carolina Lowcountry—a place where a slower pace of life is not only romanticized but embraced. For a pair of clients who call New York home for most of the year, the serene destination has become an ideal escape from the chaotic concrete jungle. Since the couple both grew up in the Carolinas with many happy memories of life on the coast, they hoped to introduce their two young children to their Southern roots, conceiving of a compound where they could spend long weekends and host big groups of family and friends. Designer Cortney Bishop felt a kinship with the clients from their very first meeting. “The wife is very elegant and sophisticated. She and her husband both work in highpowered careers and have such a presence, but they have a warm, hospitable, Southern flair, too,” notes the South Carolina native. “I immediately got a grasp of their innate style.” During an early design presentation, in fact, when Bishop presented a light fixture the clients already had on a private wish list, “That’s when I knew that we were cosmically, completely aligned,” the wife enthuses. Bishop’s appreciation for Palmetto Bluff’s scenery stems from a childhood spent on a similar barrier island up the coast. “It’s a beautiful location, very natural and uninhibited, with vast swaths of sea grass, marsh and live oak trees,” Bishop expresses. “I wanted to give the clients a kind of laissez-faire, relaxed Southern vibe for a casual entertaining home here, versus their fast-paced life in New York.”

Bishop extended the Exquisite Surfaces marble floors into the breakfast area, where a walnutfinish table by Jacob May Design holds court with Laura Kirar’s Maketto side chairs for McGuire and a built-in banquette. Peter Fasano’s Crewelwork linen in acorn appears on accent pillows before a panorama of custom steel windows proffering lush views of Lowcountry landscape.

A careful balance of classic and contemporary was core to the project even before Bishop came on board. A year earlier, the homeowners had tapped architect H. Pearce Scott to design a carriage house on the same piece of land—with plans to eventually build a larger, four-bedroom main residence to complement it. The carriage house and, by extension, main residence, “took inspiration from a traditional Southern tobacco barn form,” explains Scott, who worked with project architect Allison Bonner and project manager Amanda Denmark to craft both structures, striking a balance between old and new. The “new” is evident in and an open-concept floor plan that caters to the family’s plans to entertain; the “old” comes in the

LX_SE07_HOM_Bishop_10.indd 201

form of materials. Walls of shiplap—scaled to eight inches for a contemporary effect—put a spin on local vernacular, while the home’s chimney is molded from old-fashioned Tabby, a sturdy concoction of sand, lime and crushed oyster shells known colloquially as “Lowcountry concrete.” Also instrumental in the project were general contractors and brothers Scott, Craig and Matt Thomas, who the architect commends for translating the traditional material into a modern use. “They had five or six different mockups done in the field to ensure we had the right mix and size of oyster shells,” Scott says of the brothers, who also sourced the steel window systems that lend the bright and airy effect the clients requested throughout.

The kitchen’s Shaker-style cabinetry dons Sherwin-Williams’ Urbane Bronze, complementing dark marble countertops from Kelca Counters. The Calacatta Arabescato Vagli marble backsplash from AGM Imports offsets olive shades on The Urban Electric Co.’s Chiltern Double pendant. McGuire’s Bercut swivel counter stools add subtle masculinity.

Breaking up the lines of the poplar shiplap paneling Bishop chose to enhance Scott’s architecture, a pair of Made Goods’ Gage mirrors reflects French brass-toned Graceline faucets by Michael Berman for Rohl. Opposite: A walnut spindle bed by The Beautiful Bed Company pops against a guest bedroom’s walls, which Bishop graced with Phillip Jeffries’ Arboretum wallcovering in taupe. Its muted earth tones reappear on Pampa’s hand-loomed wool Mariana rug, Arteriors’ Odessa lamp, a Moroccan coverlet and draperies fashioned from Susan Connor New York’s Lacuna linen.

Walls painted with Farrow & Ball’s Mouse’s Back bring moodiness to the master bedroom, where light filters through Holland & Sherry draperies. Niguel dressers by Lawson-Fenning flank a Kelly Wearstler bed for EJ Victor. The midcentury Paolo Buffa chairs and a 1940s burl wood table are both from Art & Antiques Hunter in Dallas. The Bright Side 4 chandelier is by Allied Maker.

As a full-service design-build firm, Bishop’s team actively specified interior finishes to enhance Scott’s architecture: cerused white oak for millwork and ceiling beams, reclaimed marble checkerboard floors that strike both classic and graphically modern notes, and kitchen cabinetry in a “grounding” deep gray-green that prompted the palette for the entire home. Taking cues from the surrounding landscape, these enigmatic shades include moss green and mahogany, moody gray and taupe, and dollops of muted petrol. “My whole philosophy on design is not to distract from the outdoors,” says Bishop, who kept the design harmonious with its natural surroundings. In the breakfast room, for example, a custom walnut-finish table and bespoke banquette serve as supporting characters to the verdant foliage visible through a panorama of knee-height steel windows. Giving similar nods to nature, a palm-print wallcovering graces a guest bedroom, while a gleaming brass sconce of a single frond presides over the living room. Artworks sourced both stateside and abroad—such as an expressive abstract by Atlanta artist Sally King Benedict in a front hallway and a mixed-media work by Belgian artist Sabine Maes in the entry—reveal a restrained elegance that meshes perfectly with the homeowners’ personalities. “This piece shows their sophistication and offers a sense of landing,” Bishop explains. And what could be more appropriate for an arrival from the big city to Palmetto Bluff, which always signals it’s time to unwind?
