I do not entertain with a tablecloth in my dining room because I like to see the tabletop; silver flatware also sparkles more on a table without a tablecloth. Candles are important because they set the mood and illuminate guests better than a bulb. Flowers are a must, and I prefer to arrange them myself so they never look formal or fussy. What is your holiday decorating style? Festive but not commercial. I love a manzanita branch covered in white Christmas lights laying on a credenza, elegant and not overdone. I also love an amaryllis in bloom.

Of course, I’m most concerned with the wines on our table. For the past several years I have geared the wine list to France. This year, I’ll open a 1982 Ducru-Beaucaillou, magnums of William Fèvre Chablis “Les Clos” 2012 and a good Sauternes when the pies come out—most likely my 1986 Doisy-Védrines.

Everything white, with a touch of gold, burlap, branches and lots of candles. What is your favorite holiday family tradition? Going as a family to see the tree at Rockefeller Center.

What is your holiday decorating style? I like to combine the natural beauty of pine branches with an elegant aesthetic. You want it to look effortless, comfortable and most of all, inviting. What is your fondest holiday memory? My fondest holiday memory by far is the birth of my youngest daughter, Olivia Noel, on Christmas Eve, 1989. We brought her home on Christmas Day snuggled in a big red felt Christmas stocking made by volunteers at the hospital.

What will you have on your holiday dinner menu this year? We begin with fresh crab cocktails, and I always make a prime rib roast with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, gravy, green beans and peas.
