Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO
The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. This season, bringing the revival full circle, the last four creekside cottages reopen, beckoning guests with bird song and a piece of history embalmed with great care. “It’s a healing moment,” notes Mineau. “This particular story is just one of many past and many chapters to come.”

A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK
The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”

Dallas-based designer Jan Showers is renowned for her timeless style and classic glamour. Dallas artist Ann Jackson has launched a colorful pillow collection sewn with love by refugee women rebuilding their lives in Texas—the lead sewer escaped from wartorn Syria with her family. The venture was a natural progression for Jackson, who graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BFA in studio art, began her career as a graphic designer and art educator and then pursued her true passion for painting full-time. In 2016, she married her talents with design when she introduced her wallcovering line which comprises wallpaper, grass cloth and metallic pieces printed in the United States. While Jackson dabbles in watercolor, she works primarily in oil on Belgian linen. She currently offers a collection of oil painting butterflies—a representation of change and growth—as well as wallcoverings and linen that showcase her art. “I am a firm believer that we are all given gifts in life we should use, sharpen and share,” Jackson says. “Doing this through the creation of a pillow line is another avenue for sharing my artwork, and being able to take this next step while employing refugee women gives me great happiness and joy.” annjacksonart.com

Known for contemporary elegance, Houston-based architect and interior designer Lauren Rottet has launched a lighting collection with Visual Comfort & Co. as one of the company’s newest design partners. Rottet drew inspiration for her aptly named Fascio (“bundle” in Italian) collection “from the visual of natural light striking bundles of reeds that each absorb the light and emit it individually in pinpoints, yet also collectively in beautiful organic forms,” she explains. “This visual, coupled with the idea of simple laboratory glass rods bundled together in elegant strappings, is the concept behind the designs.” The line, which takes LED technology to new levels of contemporary warmth, includes eight pieces in a choice of three finishes: hand-rubbed antique brass, polished nickel and bronze. visualcomfort.com

Built in 1820 for a merchant, and soon after purchased by Governor William Aiken Jr., whose family owned the home for 142 years, the Aiken-Rhett house offers a glimpse into antebellum and post-war life in Charleston. Now under the stewardship of the Historic Charleston Foundation, the organization is dedicated to sharing the stories of the enslaved men, women and children who maintained the estate, while also showcasing furniture, architecture and finishes from the mid-19th century.

BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

Just south of downtown Miami overlooking Biscayne Bay stands the otherworldly Vizcaya estate. Owner and businessman James Deering envisioned the 1920s property as a modern and subtropical interpretation of 18th-century Italian villas. Despite its historical inspiration, the waterfront estate was constructed with modern techniques and technology for the time. Inside, old and new influences merge, such as Baroque and Renaissance antiques paired with works by contemporary artists.

While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com
What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to
be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK In the nearly 30 years since Christopher Peacock founded his eponymous luxury cabinetry company, he’s seen kitchen trends come and go, but wellmade, straightforward designs will always stand the test of time. For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he
approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,
the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com
For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design
6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. After researching vintage and international public libraries, a bibliophilic couple presented Stuart Silk Architects with an unusual ask for their Issaquah, Washington, lake house: a doublestory library. Enamored with the brief, plans were drawn for a dramatic slate-toned sanctuary with dark herringbone floors. Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. esign-and-build team Sheri and Raegan Barringer firmly believe in bringing old homes back to life—even when that requires a lot more ingenuity than starting from scratch. “So many are built and then torn down a couple generations later,” says Raegan. “It’s wonderful to find a grand old house still in good enough condition to become incredible given some time and money.” That mentality made the married duo a natural fit for a Dallas couple seeking a fresh, family-friendly style for their 1939 Southern Colonialstyle residence. The structure had withstood many dated alterations over the years, but its vast potential charmed the owners out of the new build they had been considering and right into a top-to-bottom remodel. “The last thing we wanted to do was tear down a beautiful house with great bones—it just needed to be reworked,” says the husband, who fell for the abode’s curb appeal, sprawling backyard and 8,000-squarefoot interior. Though outdated and compartmentalized, the home also offered a variety of enticing features the couple would never have considered cost-effective for a new build, including a grand formal dining room with a fireplace and a 42-foot-long gallery spanning the rear of the residence. “We wanted a home where our children can grow up,” notes the wife, “with a big yard for running around and lots of space inside to spread out and play.” With that in mind, “Imagine there were no walls” was a mantra the Barringers—who developed the plans with drawings executed by architect of record Virginia Carson— repeated as a way of helping their clients understand what the formerly closed-off rooms could become. On the main level, a narrow stairwell was opened “to create a grand foyer and center hallway with a view to the backyard,” says Sheri, and most interior walls were removed in order to further open up the layout, transform a large bedroom into a lightfilled great room, and incorporate a screened-in outdoor

living room. On the second floor, designed for the owners’ children, space was carved out for a trio of bedrooms and a large playroom with four built-in bunk beds to lodge visiting friends and cousins. And on the third level, a center stairwell was pushed to the side to accommodate an additional bunk room with four trundle beds tucked beneath the eaves. Tearing down walls and adding ample glass—including French doors along the rear gallery and floor-to-ceiling windows flanking the kitchen stove—brightened every inch of the interiors, but the Barringers were just getting started. In the kitchen, for example, they concocted a plan to emphasize the 8-foot ceilings by applying beams and tongue-and-groove paneling. “Adding something that catches the eye created the illusion of higher ceilings,” Sheri explains. A crisp white palette encompassing not just those ceilings but also the subway-tiled walls, marble countertops and Shaker-style cabinetry amplifies the effect. The open and airy vibe continues in the adjacent family room, where classic furnishings upholstered with durable indoor-outdoor fabrics and accented with pillows and throws in soft sea-glass hues call to mind the airy beach houses prevalent in the couple’s respective coastal hometowns—his in California and hers in New Jersey. A nearby powder bathroom, featuring a leafy Schumacher wallcovering and a pale blue vanity with Chippendalestyle fretwork, strikes a similarly breezy note. “Our clients love the beach, and he grew up surfing,” says Sheri, “so I think that’s an aesthetic they both gravitated toward.” On the opposite side of the residence, where the family congregates during the evening hours, the ambience feels downright moody in comparison. A formal bar—with built-in stools that swivel to face an intimate seating area—sports masculine wood and leather finishes. The adjacent den pays homage to classic Ralph Lauren style, with paneled walls painted a rich navy blue, ceilings accented with whiteoak beams and an inlaid wood veneer wallcovering, and menswear-inspired drapery fabric. “I was admittedly nervous when Sheri suggested doing plaid draperies influenced by one of my husband’s sport coats,” the wife laughs, “but the trust we established was crucial and she knew I’d love it.” Other bold moves took less convincing. In fact, it was the wife’s suggestion to paint the laundry room cabinets a fresh mint green and to wallpaper a daughter’s bedroom with a lush pattern of blooming botanicals. “It’s not as scary to play with pattern and color in kids’ spaces,” the wife says. For her, the process of remodeling in lieu of building from scratch also brought comfort. “It was nice just going room-by-room and filling in the blanks to make it our own,” she adds. Thanks to their efforts, this grand old house is primed to thrive for yet another generation. “Our goal was to plan not for the next couple of years, but rather the next 20 or 30 years,” Raegan explains. “I think they’re going to settle in and be here for quite a while.”

nyone seeking clues about the residents of a century-old Craftsman-style San Antonio residence need only reference their art collection. A Donald Roller Wilson painting signals whimsy in the living room, a geometric Robert Kelly work over a fireplace speaks to a sense of order, and a custom Analy Diego vector illustration of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the family room indicates style, class and more than a touch of glamour. According to designer Ashley Goforth, the latter is a pinpoint description of the wife. “She gives off a movie-star vibe when she enters a room,” Goforth describes. “My client knows what she likes and has the sophistication and confidence to pull off anything.” And while the lady of the house does admire Jackie O, she also has a strong allegiance to former First Lady Laura Bush, for whom she served as senior advisor for seven years in the White House. “The former First Lady is a historic preservation advocate and I learned so much not only from watching her update and preserve portions of the White House but also from visiting historic buildings worldwide with her,” she recalls. “My husband and I were

both able to appreciate this home’s details and see its potential and weren’t afraid to tackle such a large project.” Despite its condition at purchase, the 1914 structure’s Arts and Crafts bones, its prominence, location and grandness were all immediate draws for both the wife and her husband, a former pro golfer turned commercial real estate developer. What the residence lacked in the basics—such as landscaping, modern plumbing and central heat—it more than made up for with its authentic historic details coupled with sizable main living spaces. “It was a historic landmark,” says Goforth, “and the bookshelves, window seats and wood flooring were all still there.” The designer did, however, encourage a “Paint it white” philosophy early on in the project. “Everything was classic in nature, but the brown was dark and overwhelming,” she says. The decision to paint created a fresh backdrop while retaining the home’s sense of history. But the blank canvas didn’t last long. Citing pink, lavender, green and orange as their colors of choice, the couple sought upbeat interiors with an urban edge that didn’t skimp on the fun factor. “We work hard and we’re disciplined, but it’s important to have a good time,” the wife says. “Color and vibrancy are an expression of who we are as a couple.”

Goforth took the established palette and ran with it. She began with a restrained approach in the living room, where white sofas, a marble-topped coffee table and a pair of gold-framed fauteuil chairs speak to the space’s formality while raspberry velvet and animal-print accents hint at what is to come. “Animal prints give a room instant style, and I treat them as neutrals,” says the designer, who repeated the orange tones of the tiger and leopard motifs throughout to add warmth as needed. Things begin to percolate in the sun room-turneddining room, thanks to reproduction Louis XVI-style chairs upholstered in a lively chartreuse velvet-like fabric sporting a single stripe detail down the back and a pair of old-world crystal chandeliers, all of which help to balance the cleanlined zebrawood dining table. “I love how Ashley synthesizes traditional and contemporary elements,” says the wife. A merging of the two styles appears yet again on the wood flooring painted with a geometric pattern. The term “jewel box” comes to mind in the stylishly compact kitchen, brought to life with the help of hardware and plumbing consultant Leland Stone. Here, opting for two sets of Sub-Zero drawers in lieu of an upright fridge saved a window, while a unique set of doors and upper cabinets feature a circle motif with inlaid brass in reference to historic designs. The white lacquer cabinets, satin brass metal hardware and a stainless steel vent hood covered with painted wood trimmed with classic brass banding further elevate the space. “Even the kitchen is glamorous,” notes Goforth. The Technicolor ambience heats up in the tailored family room. Here, under Jackie O’s watchful eye, the luxurious purple cotton velvet sofas topped with cashmere bolster pillows are perfectly constrained by tufts and tucks. Indeed, you won’t find any skirts or wrinkles in this wellappointed space. Says Goforth, “Everything is tight and upholstered to the ground.” The bold colors and tailored touches repeat in the master bedroom, where a tufted white bed is an oasis of calm amid an ordered set of lively accent pillows. But that mix is to be expected. “There is definitely a feeling of balance and structure in the house, which we love,” says the wife, “but it’s also a haven where we can relax and be ourselves—and have lots of parties and fun.”

was a messy child,” proclaims artist Taelor Fisher, who first began collecting inspirational elements in droves as a child after her preschool teacher suggested she enroll in art classes. “I was always getting into trouble for leaving things everywhere—the result of scavenging for materials,” she laughs. “Anything to bring my ideas to life.” Today this inherent desire to forage spills into Fisher’s Dallas studio, where piles of dried petals and leaves create a fresh, woodsy scent. Their organic shapes also inform her work. “I’m interested in how we use and reuse botanicals,” she says, “breaking them down and exploring traditions around them.” Her oil paintings mix objects with abstraction, combining movement, color and variety to evoke an organic experience. “I love playing with ways to represent petals, branches and leaves,” she notes. “The abstraction helps me represent a bigger picture.” For Fisher, the “bigger picture” stems from nature’s positive impact on the brain. “Being surrounded by something organic can make you happier,” she explains. “It certainly has that effect on me.” While the artist first worked as a teacher, that creative pull she felt as a child took hold and she left the profession to pursue painting. Just a month in, the Paris-based luxury fragrance
company The House of Creed commissioned her to create a print for its fragrance Floralie— an opportunity that took her around the world. “I pinch myself every time I think about it,” she notes. “It made me realize that if you have talent and drive, what you can do is truly limitless.” A passion for nature infuses Fisher’s work holistically, as she uses natural pigments and oil paints to create an authentic adaptation of botanicals. “I love telling someone a pink was mixed using hibiscus and birch, or a green came from eucalyptus,” she says. Her palettes combine the soft hush of muted, serene colors with bold pops, each shade mixed by the artist herself. Fisher pulled color inspiration from interior decor, 1960s and ’70s decorative fabrics and Chinese porcelain to inform her latest collection, “Happy Places,” which launched at Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta before showing with more pieces at Liz Lidgett Gallery + Design in Des Moines, Iowa. Featuring a mix of geometric and opaque color fields blended with abstract floral moments, the collection was driven by the practice of bringing nature in to curate our homes—not unlike Fisher’s tendency to scavenge for inspiration and fill her studio with dried petals and leaves. “Translating what goes on in my head to a canvas is so fulfilling,” she says.

he adage “great minds think alike” couldn’t be more evident than in the effortless way this art-filled Houston house came together. Having collaborated previously with designer Janet Gust, the homeowners enlisted her help once again in hopes of updating their residence to accommodate an ever-growing art collection while also giving the interiors a modern touch. “Our home is traditional in its architectural style and has a fairly basic layout,” says the wife. “Our goal was to make the best use of the space we have while also infusing a little more contemporary style—and Janet knew exactly what we wanted.” The project began with fairly minor cosmetic tweaks like painting the walls and refinishing the floors before Gust,

joined by builder Michael Russell, moved headlong into a larger overhaul of the interiors. Architect Dillon Kyle—with project manager Josh Canez—also came onboard to collaborate with Gust on creating a seamless connection between the indoors and the new exterior spaces. “The owners both spend a lot of time outdoors,” says Gust, “and extending the veranda gave them what now feels like an outdoor living room.” Inside, the family room also took on a whole new life. Here, the fireplace received an updated façade and is now flanked by French doors replacing former built-in bookshelves, allowing sunlight to flood in and providing easy outdoor access. Meanwhile, Gust also brought in a new B&B Italia sofa configured to function as a tête-à-tête

between the fireplace seating area and kitchen. “My main objective was to make this small rectangular room a family area that’s usable from both sides,” explains Gust. Now the once single-use space also invites guests located in the cooking area to settle in and visit before meals. Gust also brought functionality to a homework room, another spot previously not utilized to its full potential. New built-in storage adds depth at one end opposite a vibrantly hued banquette on casters, which enable the room to easily transition from the two daughters’ study station to a serving space when the family entertains. French doors and chevron brick flooring seamlessly connect to the outdoor veranda, ensuring an easy flow of traffic. And in lieu of neutrals, Gust kept things interesting by blending bold colors and textures for a perfect balance throughout. An example is the Kyle Bunting rug she custom designed and layered over the brick floors. “I wanted something durable with an interesting shape that touched all corners of the room,” explains Gust. “It really does make a statement.” Even spaces with the smallest of footprints enjoyed modern updates, including a former wet bar with doors that was transformed into a functional and stylish alcove just outside the homework room in the foyer. “During parties, it becomes a useful display area for food and flowers,” says Gust. In fact, around every corner hang eye-catching works of art—even in the kitchen. “As the most lived-in room, it should be designed not just with cabinets,” posits Gust, who replaced black granite with marble countertops and dated cabinetry with a wall now showcasing a realistic oil-on-linen by Leslie Parke entitled Janet’s Shelf. “It reminds me of my grandmother’s pressed glass and looks like it came right out of her cabinet,” says the wife, noting her family now enjoys cooking and dining together in the kitchen daily. Gust uses a special hanging technique “to create a floating effect so the art isn’t flat against the wall and stands out more,” she explains. Notable pieces elsewhere in the residence include Dan Christensen’s acrylic-on-canvas unifying the bold dining room palette, Raymond Hendler’s abstract acrylic-on-canvas anchoring the sitting room and a William Betts acrylic-oncanvas in the homework room, among many others.

But it’s not simply the works of art that had a huge impact on the outcome of this home’s interiors. Gust admits it was also the interesting details and carefully curated accessories that proved key to the project’s success. “Accessories are an integral part of the process,” the designer explains. “I call it phase three—when we select the ‘jewelry’ in the final stages.” In this case, finishing touches included a grouping of handmade decorative jars with oversized stoppers, selected to create a dynamic visual statement on the dining room table. Color-matched to nearby artwork, they were but the “icing on the cake” for the homeowners upon the completion of their stylishly modernized and functional family home. Notes the wife, “We spend a lot more time outside, we entertain more frequently and we are all together more as a family.”
