After a 30-year occupant moved out, a young couple purchased this apartment, refreshing it with daring and unique finishes from head to toe. The tiny, 49-square-foot kitchen (small even by New York standards) receives its personality from Poggenpohl’s gray nut tree cabinetry and aluminum backsplash— complete with Gorilla wallpaper. Functionality was key, with custom features to clear the countertops of clutter and create space for clever, smaller-scale appliances.

This kitchen design was part of a complete renovation on the 20th floor of a condominium in St. Louis, Missouri. The entire unit was stripped from floor to ceiling, and reconfigured to fulfill the homeowners’ wishes for an open floor plan. To accommodate their desire for a welcoming kitchen with clean lines, Poggenpohl products were used here and in nearly every room in the home. The result is a modern, seamless aesthetic.

The white marble paired so fabulously together with the brass—such a modern take on a classic chandelier shape and style. MIMI FAUCETT Writer / Austin My creative influences come from… Print magazines. Nothing gives me more creative joy than a favorite, familiar magazine still having the ability to surprise me. Long live print! Favorite book: Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington. Not only is the story inspiring, but the hot-orange cover makes this book coffee table-worthy. Top three things on your design wish list: I’m dying for a set of black linen sheets from Hawkins New York—what I consider to be the perfect summer bed set. I’m also currently obsessing over L.A. artist Bari Ziperstein’s quirky ceramic vases, and I’m steadily saving a spot on my wall for a face painting (or two!) from Sally King Benedict. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: My grandmother, Nana. She’s someone who’s generous with time, laughter and sensitivity, but first and foremost, she’s a listener. It’s rare to get a story about her past, but when you do, it’s always fascinating.

I also create guitar-based Ambient Soundscapes to accompany many of my fine art exhibitions, as I find sound is a great counterpoint to my visually oriented work. Prized possessions: I have a photograph from the first roll of film I shot. It’s a black-and-white print I took at age 12, and I treasure it because I’m intrigued by how this simple close-up of a printing press foreshadowed my fascination with light, space, form and design. Also, my health. Having won two fights with cancer, I am aware of the value of good health, and I cherish it every day. Finally, I love my best friend and studio mate, Macchiato, a 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, who was rescued from an elephant preserve. Upcoming project: I’m excited to be working on new photographs for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Clare Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut, that will run from October 14 through December 31. These cosmos-inspired images explore the intersection of art, science and spirituality.

ERIC PIASECKI Photographer / New York What type of design inspires you? Though my personal aesthetic tends to lean toward modern, I enjoy all different types of interiors. Right now, I really like seeing how designers are taking traditional design and adding modern twists to make it more contemporary. If money were no object, I’d buy… A new horse for our barn in New Mexico. Most interesting person you’ve met: Years ago, we were shooting Versace’s mansion in South Beach, Miami, and I got to meet famed photographer Helmut Newton by the gold-tiled pool—it was an over-the-top experience all around! Preferred superpower: It would have to be the ability to fly— no more airplanes! Of course, I would need some kind of side car for all my equipment.

Imagine growing up in a magical world where butterflies flutter along perfectly painted vines and mischievous monkeys frolic up and down the walls. Now imagine that place is your childhood home and those fanciful landscapes are the family business, and you might get a sense of the charmed upbringing had by sisters Hannah and Rachel Cecil Gurney. “We grew up in a stunning house, decorated by our father, just opposite Kensington Gardens in London,” says Hannah. “My sister and I used to sit on the stairs, fascinated by the Chinese figures on the wallpaper.” Depicting peasant life in rural 18th-century China, the pattern, which featured scenes of silk-weaving and porcelain-making, wasn’t just a work of breathtaking decoration, but also a lesson in history and culture. “It was all very exotic to a 6-year-old Londoner, and our father would happily spend hours talking us through it all,” she says. Their father, Claud Cecil Gurney, founded de Gournay, the world-renowned maker of exquisite handmade wallcoverings, christening the brand with the French root of the family name in 1986.

As the story goes, Claud had trouble finding skilled artisans to restore some antique wallpaper in his home; so, through the Chinese Trade Commission in London, he located artists familiar with the painting techniques in mainland China. Working with the craftsmen, he began to create hand-painted papers, reigniting a tradition that had begun in the early 18th century, when chinoiserie was all the rage among the European aristocracy. By staying true to original production techniques— typically six artisans work on a single paper that can take up to 150 hours to produce—Claud created a truly bespoke luxury item. Today, his daughters help run the company—Hannah as director, and Rachel as the global style manager—putting their stamp on a number of forward-thinking initiatives while preparing to take over the family business when their father retires. “Our father has been wonderful about allowing us to make decisions and take on a lot of responsibility,” says Hannah. “He understands that if he is serious about handing over the reins, he needs to trust and support our ideas and allow us to learn from our mistakes. We love what we do so much that we want to ensure we safeguard it for the next generation.” The company’s vision has expanded to include both more contemporary designs and ones that reflect other global perspectives, such as the more abstract Japanese and Korean collection, an
example of which features a weeping willow motif, or the Papiers Peints Panoramiques collection, which is inspired by 19th-century French murals of exotic scenes. “While de Gournay has always been seen as a company that makes very traditional hand-painted papers, my sister and I encourage a more modern aesthetic through employing innovative new techniques and colorways, as well as developing new collections,” says Hannah. One strategic move that has proven successful: a string of high-profile collaborations, the most recent of which is an au courant take on an Art Deco motif inspired by and created in conjunction with Harrods department store. “Art Deco is making a comeback in interior design, and I love the use of geometric shapes, gilt and lacquer in interiors,” says Rachel. “The new design features an ornate scallop pattern gilded onto a metallic background with hand-painted watercolor accents.” Adds Hannah, “The wallpaper has a contemporary edge that we think will appeal to a whole new audience.”
In the quest to expand the brand’s reach, de Gournay pairs up in September with style icon Kate Moss, the latest partnership to feature a boldface name more synonymous with the runway than the annals of interior design. Other recent sartorial collaborations include Matthew Williamson, Jenny Packham and Moda Operandi. Most recently, the company teamed up with Italian fashion label Aquazzura for a line of embroidered footwear and a Tropicalia-inspired wallpaper (shown in part on the previous page), which they developed as a nod to brand founder Edgardo Osorio’s Colombian heritage. Of the synergy between the company and the fashion industry, Hannah feels it’s a natural fit—after all, wallpaper is a form of dressing for one’s home. “There are a lot of similarities between couture and de Gournay,” she says. “We make everything by hand to the highest quality while offering limitless bespoke capabilities. Furthermore, people with style tend to have flair when it comes to their interiors, and vice versa. These days being stylish extends to a whole lifestyle, not just your clothing.”

All handmade rugs tell a tale, spinning a narrative through silk and wool. In the case of Amadi Carpets, there’s another story as well: In 1984, the Ahmadi family fled war-torn Afghanistan to neighboring Pakistan, eventually emigrating to America with little more than the clothes on their backs and a talent for weaving. Here, Zubair Ahmadi, one of the five brothers behind the brand, shares with us the company’s artistic and philanthropic vision. For 20 years, Amadi Carpets has created some of the most dynamic and finely made rugs on the market. How did you learn the skills of the trade? Growing up in a family of nine children in Afghanistan, we learned the art of weaving from our mother, whose family opened the first silk-weaving factory in Kabul during the 1960s. As a kid, I worked on the loom alongside my brothers after school. We also learned to restore different types of antique rugs and textiles from various countries over the years, so we not only have a knowledge of the construction, but we’re familiar with different techniques and styles. Those same skills eventually led me and my brother, Zabi, to open

our own small 400-square-foot workshop in Los Angeles in 1995, where we refurbished rugs found at flea markets and auctions. Today, all five of us—Zabi, Assad, Jawid, Murtaza and me—work collectively on operations and designs at Amadi. How did you grow the company from a local repair shop to a global enterprise? Two years after opening our shop, we couldn’t find the quality of rugs we desired. We learned of numerous Afghan weavers who had fled to nearby Peshawar, Pakistan, during the civil war in the 1990s. We feel a deep connection with the people of Afghanistan and were looking for a way to assist those refugees. Zabi made the journey to Peshawar in 1997, and, coincidentally, ran into a foreman who worked in the factory that belonged to our mother’s family. Hiring him and his family led to employing other refugees. As the years went on, five looms turned into 10, 10 turned into 200, and soon we were employing over 1,000 Afghan weavers living in Pakistan.
At what point did you move the weaving operation back to Afghanistan? After the country’s liberation from the Taliban in 2003, many of the workers returned to Afghanistan. That’s when we opened our first weaving workshop in Kabul and our focus shifted to employing an ignored sector of the population: women. It was our goal to create a safe workplace
where women would be empowered to make a living. It wasn’t easy: Even though we were from Afghanistan ourselves, we had to convince fathers, husbands and brothers that we were setting up a safe, harassment-free environment for their daughters, wives and sisters. Providing transportation to and from work offered them further protection. Additionally, due to four decades of ongoing war, a whole generation has been raised without an education; therefore, we offer one hour of basic reading and writing lessons every day. In terms of the process, what distinguishes you from other rug companies? Since we control our own production, we get to be more creative, productive and effective than a typical rug gallery or company. From sourcing the raw wool to washing it, carding and dying it, we control every step. And the fact that we are improving lives along the way is an added plus. Share what’s next for Amadi, design- and philanthropy-wise. We want to be more than a rug company. We’d like to launch furniture and textile lines one day. In terms of giving back, our goal is to extend the outreach of our programs and build more weaving centers in other parts of Afghanistan. After all, women are the backbone of the family, so if you help one woman, you help many people beyond her.

When you walk into Katherine Wildt O’Brien’s studio, you’d be forgiven for thinking you stumbled into a jeweler’s workshop or a geology buff’s paradise. A panoply of glimmering stones greets visitors of the space—with bright crystal quartz, deep violet amethyst and gleaming pyrite, also known as fool’s gold, all on glorious display. Unearthed from the farthest reaches of the globe, the shining specimens inspire New York City-based
Matthew Studios’ collections, which include hardware, lighting and case goods. Wildt O’Brien’s love of exotic rocks started at a young age. As a teenager, she worked parttime in a gem shop, where an eccentric, elderly West Indian woman taught her about crystals and their properties. Following her passion, she established Matthew Studios, named for her pet rabbit, in 2008. Her big break came when Tory Burch asked her to design crystal luminaries

for her stores. “Just walking into the Tory Burch offices is so inspiring,” she says. “When we got the opportunity to work on custom lamps for her, it was a dream come true, not to mention a creative learning experience.” Today, the company occupies a large loft space in Harlem, close to where the designer lives. In fact, it was the area’s African market, just a few blocks away from her studio, that provided the impetus for Wildt O’Brien’s latest hardware line. “I love the handcrafted, global ‘Gypset’ vibe at the market,” she says. “I have been collecting cowrie shell earrings for years and have wanted to do a collection incorporating them, since the cowrie shell is a traditional symbol of wisdom and abundance. Horn is another favorite used in African craft, and a powerful talisman of strength and inner power.” Acquiring it is another story: “It took two years to find a reputable source for naturally shed horn,” she says. Not surprisingly, Wildt O’Brien’s inspiration board is full of recognizable safari-chic imagery, such as film stills from Out of Africa, photos from vintage Ralph Lauren runway shows, the work of photographer Peter Beard and shots of intricate, hand-beaded Masai necklaces. “The pieces are imbued with a nomadic spirit,” she says. A passion for travel, painting and even flea-market finds also filters into the design process. “I recently found a red-tagged, sale-bin rhinestone purse, and the handle inspired my new metal Harper cabinet pull series,” she says. Refined settings of polished brass, nickel and chrome allow the stones to steal the show, whether it’s the deep whiskey-hued facets of smoky quartz or the vibrant emerald waves of malachite—both of which are sourced from mines in South America and Africa, respectively.

“Simple forms are paired with natural, tonal textures that resonate against hand-cast metal,” Wildt O’Brien says. That juxtaposition of organic forms with polished finishes lends the collection a sophisticated well-traveled vibe that hints at many of the pieces’ exotic origins. Says the designer, “I’m still charmed by the idea that these stones have journeyed around the world to end up in a stylish new setting.”

A nonprofit fair, the Biennale Interieur’s unique installations often blur the line between commercial design and fine art. What you’ll find: With nearly half of the new products hailing from Belgium, you’ll see innovative twists on regional vernacular staples such as neutral linens, raw and rough-hewn woods, and burnished metals. The focus is on mostly local, European-produced design with a decidedly international point of view, and collaborations across industries or cultures are encouraged. What you’ll find: Having originated as an exhibition of tabletop decor, the vision for the show has expanded exponentially—it now occupies eight halls, each one’s offerings ascending in grandeur, culminating in full-scale room displays by leading international brands. While the convention center is a 30-minute shuttle ride from the city, ce n’est pas grave—new grave talents to discover, like Zuza Mengham and Glassworks, the artists responsible for the objets at left, respectively, make the trip worth it. Plus, the exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston are always varied and interesting. When Laura Umansky, owner of Houston’s Laura U Interior Design, learned the 40-year-old custom upholstery and furniture company she’d been working with for eight years was on the market, she knew what she had to do: purchase it. “There is so much custom upholstery that goes into Laura U, it made sense from a business perspective,” she explains. “And I know and trust the artisans there, so I wanted to keep it going.” The business, which the interior designer renamed House + Town (a play on the company’s hometown of Houston), creates custom work for designers and architects as well as Laura U. Although Umansky is focused on the operations side of House + Town, her background helps make the results even better. “I have an insider’s perspective,” she points out. “I know what designers need and the product they expect.” Here, Umansky uses her insight to curate a must-do itinerary for art- and design-lovers in Houston. “It’s all about the museums and the food,” she says. laurauinteriordesign.com from small plates to salads and pizza. An evolution in lighting design has taken place, incorporating new materials and technologies. Instead of retrofitting existing designs with LEDs, Hubbardton Forge has been developing designs specifically around the technology. To this end, the company has developed new initiatives, like using a local glassblower for many of its pieces and working with a local firm to develop LED components, thereby decreasing its environmental footprint. “We’re using LEDs in new and interesting ways,” Kitts says. “With our Möbius mini pendant, we were able to shape and form the light-guide element so that it becomes a sculptural aspect of the piece.”

When lighting the kitchen or bath, Hubbardton Forge’s director of design, David Kitts, has this one directive. “Select light fixtures that you love; not just like. The bathroom should be your own personal oasis, and your kitchen should be a place where friends and family gather.” Insightful advice from the design lead of America’s foremost luxury lighting manufacturer. Lighting sets the mood, so he suggests mini pendants in multiples over a kitchen island and a chandelier or pendant with dimmable light above the tub. “The pendants won’t interfere with the line of sight for guests or family in the kitchen, and the chandelier creates a spa-like atmosphere in the bath,” he continues. A true American success story, Hubbardton Forge is known for pushing the limits of form and materials to create handcrafted designs that meld the artistry and functionality of lighting. With 230 designers and makers, engineers and production team and staff, the HF team views the world through unique prisms as they create beautiful pieces. Take Kitts’ recent trip to Reykjavik, Iceland, where its street art opened his eyes to a new way of looking at lighting. “I was inspired not by the content or quality of the work, but how the art interacted and contributed to the space, the building and the neighborhood,” he says. “Walking past the same mural on a sunny day and then again on a stormy day could be two very different experiences.”

At first sight: I’m completely impressed with Oeuffice’s penchant for reimagining the classics: They manage to create sculptural works of art that are equally functional and versatile. On composition: It’s against this backdrop that the stools prove their inherent duality. They feel natural against the exposed brick but would also easily hold their own in both a formal or contemporary setting. As far as design goes… Italy really has no limits. These stools resonate with the country’s influential style in part because of the simple application of elegant, timeless materials; the Cipollino Apuano marble is super-sleek, the travertine is very porous, and the Rosa Perlino marble is full of movement. Each element is independently unassuming, but in union, striking works of art are born. Lasting impression: Refined, sculptural, bold, fresh and playful.

POST MATES THE PIECES: Ionik Stool and Tuskan Stool THE DESIGNER: Oeuffice FIND IT: mattermatters.com THE INSPIRATION: When Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Jakub Zak’s creativity united in 2011 to form their U.K.-based design laboratory, Oueffice, they challenged themselves to imagine limited-edition objects, that were reminiscent of utopian ideals and innovation. Enter the Ionik and Tuskan stools, both part of a second coming of the studio’s Kapital collection and based on primitive stone columns resonant with classical architecture. Handcrafted in Italy using solid-stone blocks, they are modern in aesthetic and scale but maintain the integrity of their inspirational era—an edgy balance very much in line with the contemporary duo’s manifesto.

Lehanneur’s aim to create eye-catching objects that examine nature’s poetic side is realized in this delicate lighting fixture, comprised of a bundle of hand-blown, ribbed-glass tubes in a rich green marble base. Along with other materials from the series, both the marble and glass were incorporated into the piece in their natural color and condition— inciting a primitive moment in an otherwise distinctly modern piece.

At first sight: There’s a wonderful sense of fluidity to this light fixture, almost like water that’s lit from within. Artist to artist: In my own work, I’m constantly trying to push the design dialogue forward, and this piece falls in that special spot between design and sculpture. Lehanneur is playing with our preconceived notions of what a lamp is and propelling those ideas a little further. It’s important… To know the rules before you break them. Here, the artist is clearly informed about design, which is why any risks taken clearly paid off. Global musings: As our world becomes larger, it’s increasingly important to look inward and become more focused. For example, I try to figure out what an area offers that’s specific to that place, whether woven silk textiles in Laos or innovative lighting in Paris. I am always on the hunt for the offbeat and the unusual. The French… Have been innovators in decorative arts since AndréCharles Boulle’s then-groundbreaking furniture in the 17th century, and I think Lehanneur is definitely following in the footsteps of his countrymen. Lasting impression: This design is sculptural, graceful, fluid, lyrical and dynamic.

Shown in a sumptuous Pierre Frey fabric, the seat’s striking shape and seductive proportions incite immediate interest. One would expect no less from this power collab, but there is still something to be said about a design that equally prizes comfort and allure. And in the case of the P2 Lavinia: Mission accomplished.

Be it automobiles or architecture, furniture or fashion, the legacy of our people is bold, thoughtful design, and this piece is clearly Italian-born. Global gatherers: The hunt and find is one of the more thrilling parts of what I get to do with interiors. Pieces collected from around the world add that transportive element of a life welllived. And an international piece with heritage or a good story gives a sense of being collected rather than assembled. Lasting impression: This striking seat reads as stylish, architectural, luxurious and dramatic.

Using bronze in the traditional sand-casting technique, the vases are handmade by artisans in Morocco, and though Odedra visualizes each form and silhouette, the life of each piece is organically determined by the skilled hands that shape it—resulting in one-of-a-kind mini masterpieces.

It’s really lovely to see regions with a long-standing relationship to these materials and techniques making a mark on contemporary design. The resulting pieces always seem to have the most integrity. At home: I imagine these objects functioning beautifully as both decor and utilitarian objects. A love letter to 19th-century French Dieppe bone mirrors, the Man Ray is a striking blend of handpulled ivory glass leaves, carved silver gilt wood and hand-silvered mirror plate, and embodies the very vision of its creators: designs that are rich in technique and timelessness.

At first sight: This showstopper of a mirror appeals to me in that it is extremely delicate but commanding of your attention—a true statement piece indeed. It also speaks to the fabulousness of Cox London as a company. Add Rose Tarlow’s stamp of approval and I’m sold. As an Anglophile… With a lifelong obsession for all things British—pop music, movies, art and design—this mirror epitomizes the U.K. tradition of things not always being what they seem. At first, I thought it was comprised of a million little shark teeth à la Damien Hirst’s renowned tiger shark in formaldehyde sculpture, which like this mirror, doesn’t fully register until staring it right in the face. On composition: I love the contrast of this fragile piece dwelling in an industrial space, when one would normally anticipate it living in a traditional environment. Lasting impression: This mirror is delicate, intricate, beautiful and unexpected.

London-based Mackenzie Wheeler Architects & Designers helped reincarnate a circa-1700s property in Bruton, Somerset, United Kingdom, as At the Chapel, a local hub offering a series of boutique hotel rooms embracing the structure’s surviving original architecture. FLIGHT OF FANCY Modern technology has put inspiration at our fingertips, dissolving traditional boundaries and making even the most remote pockets of the planet feel within reach. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of design, where at any given moment, creatives have access to a virtual library of beautiful images and products from around the globe without ever having to leave home. While armchair travel is a lovely way to kill a few hours, sometimes it’s necessary to put down that smartphone, hop on a plane and go see the sights firsthand. 33 RUE MAJORELLE Like a smaller version of the legendary Parisian boutique Colette, this open-concept shop just opposite the Majorelle Garden is stocked with an expertly curated collection of clothes, jewelry and art by local designers.
DAR YACOUT Designed by Bill Willis, the late American architect and decorator who helped put Marrakesh on the style map, this dining spot serves a set menu amid dramatic decor. Plan ahead; reservations are a must.
ALNOUR Located in the medina, or old city, this workshop and store is a social enterprise for handicapped women who are skilled in the art of embroidery. They sell exquisite, handmade linens for the home, as well as clothing. EL FENN BOUTIQUE With its impressive art collection and drop-dead gorgeous interiors, El Fenn, from Vanessa Branson, Virgin mogul Richard Branson’s sister, is one of the most stylish stays in the medina. Now, it features an adjoining boutique with an array of wonderful home goods, which can be shipped globally. I’ve collaborated with them on a collection of pillows, and all proceeds from sales benefit a foundation that teaches women to weave in the Atlas Mountains.

NOMAD RESTAURANT With a modern menu that features fresh salads, Nomad is my favorite place for lunch in the medina. The café has a lovely terrace that overlooks “spice square,” where you can view all the exotic spice vendors. Bonus: They take craft cocktails seriously here. LALLA French owner Laetitia Trouillet crafts chic handbags—think studded leather clutches—and accessories at this boutique in the hip Guéliz district. Her bags, scarves and headbands make wonderful gifts for friends back home.
DAR MOHA This restaurant was once the home of French designer Pierre Balmain. I like to sit by the pool, but all the rooms are charming. There is a set menu with many courses of Moroccan food, so be prepared for a feast.
MAISON DU KAFTAN Perhaps no article of clothing conjures images of Morocco quite like the free-flowing kaftan. Also located in the medina, this store is stocked with versions of the garment in all colors, styles and price ranges.
BELDI COUNTRY CLUB If you need a peaceful respite from the commotion of the souk, you can’t beat this place for a leisurely swim or a spa treatment. Grab a French-style lunch by the pool—the salade nicoise is divine!

ARTFUL LODGER Jasper Conran has designed women’s fashion, menswear, accessories and home goods, but he’s never attached his name and aesthetic to a hotel—until now. L’Hôtel Marrakech is the British designer’s first foray into luxury lodging. “Opening a hotel has brought together all that I enjoy working on the most: food, textiles, interiors and gardens,” he says. Located in a 19th-century riad (a traditional Moroccan dwelling with an interior courtyard) in the heart of the medina, the otherworldly retreat combines modern-day amenities with oldfashioned glamour. “Marrakesh is a city of amazing contrasts where one can wander along dark alleys and emerge into exquisite gardens and beautiful courtyards,” he says. “I wanted to make L’Hôtel Marrakech a comfortable home, where people feel immediately welcome and happy.” l-hotelmarrakech.com
3 a la mode A half century ago, the desert city of Marrakesh cast a spell over fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, forever influencing his work. To honor that legacy, the long-awaited Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, designed by Studio KO, will open its doors in October. Located on the street bearing his name near the Jardin Marjorelle—the legendary garden that he and longtime partner Pierre Bergé saved from development in 1980—the museum will feature permanent and rotating exhibitions as well as a library, café and restaurant. “This city deeply influenced Yves’ life and work, particularly his discovery of color,” says Bergé. “The Studio KO architects share this passion for Marrakesh and their clean, uncluttered style recalls his work.”

8:30 a.m. I love starting the day with breakfast in the Wintergarten café at Literaturhaus Berlin. The villa was built in 1889, during the reign of
2 p.m. I stop by Trouvé-Berlin for a little treasure hunting. This vintage furniture store is dedicated to French and Italian design of the 20th century.
10 a.m. Head to Berlinische Galerie (shown above), a new museum whose primary collection is composed of art produced in the city, spanning from 1870 to present-day. 12 p.m. Hunger strikes, so I pop into Salumeria Lamuri, a casual Italian restaurant located in the Kreuzberg neighborhood. It’s my favorite intimate spot for a satisfying lunch with a good glass of wine.

3 p.m. For treasure of a different sort, visit René Talmon l’Armée’s shop. The jewelry designer makes beautiful pieces using 18-karat gold, oxidized silver and naturally colored diamonds. 4 p.m. To get a sense of Berlin’s decadence in the 1920s, check out the museum at the LiebermannVilla. German painter Max Liebermann’s old summer residence by Lake Wannsee holds many of the artist’s paintings and has an impressive garden. 7 p.m. Briefmarken Weine is a low-key wine bar that occupies a former East German storefront— its neon sign “Briefmarken” translates to “stamps.” With amazing pasta, antipasto and wine, it’s the perfect spot to end the day.
AGAINST THE GRAIN
File this one under happy accidents: Cologne-based designer Meike Harde was staining fabric when some of the pigment spilled onto her wooden worktop, leaving streaks of bold color to run along the grain of the surface. In that moment, her Wooden Aquarelle project was born. Based on a technique once used by German Expressionist painters, Harde’s process of applying color to wood is random, so no two panels are alike. With their intense hues and soft transitions, the panels resemble dreamy, hypnotic watercolors. When applied to furnishings, like the triangular nesting tables seen here, the effect is mesmerizing. meikeharde.com

There’s no shortage of personality in Jamie Drake’s glamorous, modern, color-saturated interiors. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that the celebrated New York designer also has a reputation for being quite the bon vivant. What better insider to share his idea of a perfect day in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai? drakeanderson.com 7:30 a.m. Rise and shine at The Peninsula hotel located right on The Bund, the famed waterfront promenade. Enjoy the view of the new city of Pudong across the Huangpu River. From here, I can see the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, an awesome 1,535-foot spire that looks like it came right off the pages of a futuristic comic book. 8:30 a.m. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the lobby, the hotel’s airy and spacious hub. The smoked salmon with a single scrambled egg is perfect, and the breads and pastries from the buffet are hard to resist; though, I do try to limit myself. 10 a.m. I always make time after breakfast for a relaxed morning walk along The Bund to admire the city. It’s a good way to get revved up for the day ahead, and it’s the best time to avoid the massive crowds that descend on the area at

lunchtime. With so many different types of buildings, the neighborhood is a living museum of architectural styles. 12:30 p.m. Off to the Longhua Pagoda and Temple. It features a vegetarian restaurant, which is quite common for an active Buddhist temple. The superb main course is a soup bowl filled with carefully prepared garden delights and noodles. In the nearby entry area, school children learn how to make dumplings. 2 p.m. After lunch, tour the pagoda and temple with one of the monks as a guide. The multiple buildings are filled with spectacular carved and gilded deities. I’m in awe of one of the halls in particular; it’s filled with 500 golden statues. My kind of army—peace-loving and glittering! 3 p.m. Check out more furniture showrooms in the design district around Jiangning Road. Some of the wares are eye-poppingly over-the-top, but there are a few quieter, modern offerings as well. 5:30 p.m. Sneak back to the hotel for a muchneeded rest and pre-dinner nap. 8 p.m. If you grow weary of Asian food, opt for French food at the sensational bistro Franck, located in the French Concession neighborhood.
By this time, a martini up with a twist is sorely needed, and much enjoyed. When I’m there, I order a traditional Gallic meal and wash it down with a light Beaujolais. For dessert: rich and decadent chocolate mousse. 10:45 p.m. Lights out—until the next time. Xie Xie!

What quality makes Melbourne design unique? Melbourne has a different feel than Sydney. It has a colder climate, and it’s moodier; whereas, Sydney is all about the sunshine and the harbor. Our design always nods to our natural environment. Why do you think the city is having a moment? The influx of a lot of new restaurants, cafés and bars has given designers a chance to be more adventurous. Also, the residential property market is extremely competitive—developers not only employ designers as a marketing tool, but also to promote a Melbourne lifestyle. Finally, there’s Instagram, which is creating its own, universal visual language, bringing Australian design to an international audience.
DRAMATIC TURN Sydney designer Greg Natale, known for his fondness of bold colors and geometric patterns, has won international acclaim for his tailored, sophisticated interiors. Read on for his take on design in the land down under. gregnatale.com What sets Australian design apart? I think our geography has helped to create our own “international” style. We’re influenced by our traditional European roots, but we also admire the creativity and industriousness of America. Factor in our proximity to Asia and our mild climate, and you can see how Australian design has evolved into its own thing.

Favorite Aussie designers past and present: I am a big admirer of the late architect Harry Seidler. His work was ahead of its time and his career spanned many decades. His projects weren’t always warmly received, but his provocative work defined a style and an era of Australian architecture.
Dream project: I would love to try my hand at a private jet—who wouldn’t! There’s a challenge in creating a chic interior with so many restrictions on space and functionality.

Favorite local design brands: Chris Connell Design is brilliant for all things furniture, product, interiors and architecture; he’s been a driving force over the last 25 years for original design. And Bruce Rowe from Anchor Ceramics does phenomenal sculpture and planter vessels.

LOCAL INSIGHT FROM THE KITCHEN SOURCE What does the Design District bring to the Dallas real estate market? The Design District brings on-site access to a variety of home customization options that clients could previously only see online or in a catalog. Now they can see what it looks like and how much space is required. They can feel textures, open doors, see exact colors and test fixtures in person. Is there anything about the Dallas Design District that is often unknown? Not all showrooms are to the trade only. Many showrooms are open to the public, including The Kitchen Source. How do you view the area changing over the next decade? The District continues to grow and evolve. With a new hotel being built and restaurants coming in to accommodate those of us working and living here, the area continues to come to life.

rmed with paint swatches, designer Denise McGaha first visited Gail and Ron Berlin’s home in Dallas’ Park Cities area for only a color consultation. “The living room color wasn’t working,” she remembers. “It was pink, with a lavender cast.” All five samples she brought, however, clicked, as did personalities, and one thing led to another: a whole-house tweaking helmed by McGaha. The residence had originally attracted the Berlins—empty nesters with three grown children and eight grandchildren— with its neoclassical architecture, setback siting on the lot and framing with 75-year-old oak trees. However, the couple were seeking a balance between her newfound modern preferences and his longstanding traditional tendencies while creating a backdrop for their collection of fine art and antiques. The home they found had many elaborate elements that just needed to be simplified and streamlined

to fit their aesthetic. “There was nothing missing as much as it was a little overdone,” Gail says. Their trust in McGaha’s vision led to key decisions that pleasantly surprised the couple, producing some outstanding design elements throughout. In the living room, for instance, the elaborate dimensional plaster ceiling originally featured a dark stain, forming a visually heavy canopy. “I was going to take down the whole ceiling,” Gail recalls. “Denise talked us into painting it a lighter shade, in the same color as the walls, because she liked the design and texture.” To complement the ceiling update, McGaha also replaced the room’s original white-marble mantel—detailed with urns, emerald cabochons and gold accents—with an elegant substitute from her Denise McGaha for Materials Marketing collection. “I chose black Nero marble to create balance with the multiple windows in the space and to weight the plasterwork ceiling,” the designer explains.

Across the foyer and into the dining room, attention turned to the walls. Mirrored fretwork came down in favor of more sedate paneled wainscoting, and the designer added a wallcovering in a charcoal-hued leaf-pattern wood veneer, creating a rich textural backdrop. Likewise, McGaha planned a salon-style grouping for some of the Berlins’ exquisite traditional paintings in various sizes and themes, all unified by carved gilt frames. The arrangement was an adventure for the clients, who had previously opted for gallery-style displays of their fine art. “We were uncertain it would allow each painting its own authenticity,” Gail remembers. “However, Denise said, ‘Trust me. We’ll hang them, and if you don’t like it we’ll change it.’ ” McGaha laid out the grid in just 20 minutes, the design more than pleasing her clients. “I’d never seen anyone arrange art like that,” the wife says. “When we saw the result, we were captivated.” McGaha’s idea to hang a 19th-century French gilt mirror on an antiqued mirror pane on a wall in the breakfast area also required some friendly persuasion. “I was reluctant,” Gail admits. However, the clients once again trusted their designer, whose risk-taking paid off. “The change made a huge difference,” the wife says of the double-mirror feature, which now serves as a dramatic focal point within view of the front entrance. A similarly unorthodox suggestion involved placing a piece of art above the oval tub in the master bathroom. “The rug, seating and art make the space feel more like a bathing room,” McGaha explains. The art installation itself—on a glass wall separating the bath and the shower space—proved challenging. However, through the owners’ company, Berlin Interests—which handled construction on this project post-purchase—the team successfully hung the painting using a special wirecable system.

Other changes, although less unorthodox, were equally impactful. In the kitchen, McGaha added wood doors to previously all-glass upper cabinets to conceal storage, leaving glass for emphasis on the cabinets near the range. She also painted the island base a soft blush shade, a subtle but effective relief from the all-white cabinetry. Elsewhere—namely in a powder room just off the kitchen as well as in the master bedroom—McGaha artfully integrated wallcoverings for textural interest and pattern. “My design aesthetic involves multiple layers in spaces,” she says, “and I love to start with wallpaper.” When it came to furnishings, “Gail wanted classic, clean lines and more architectural pieces that could blend with important antiques in their collection,” McGaha says. Seating throughout, such as the family room sofa in smooth velvet, has simple lines while accommodating

heavy use. Even antique pieces seem refreshed and updated in the context of their new modernized surroundings. “The homeowners want guests to feel at ease,” the designer says, noting the couple appreciate quality and detail but find beauty in the understated. The Berlins gained their grandchildren’s official stamp of approval after tackling the backyard. Now, with a pool area and landscaping, Gail enjoys filling the home with fresh flower cuttings while “the grandkids frequently enjoy the hot tub,” she says. “That’s just the way it’s supposed to be.” With her home complete and McGaha’s paint swatches filed away, Gail is working her way through another set of colors: She has taken up watercolor painting. “I thought I would try to learn, and I have a good time with it,” she says. “Color is mesmerizing.”
The goal for the kitchen was twofold: to allow flexibility when entertaining and to create a comfortable and livable space where family and guests can gather. The runner is from Renaissance Collection.

reetings from Austin,” states the recognizable vibrant mural painted on the façade of Todd Sanders’ South Austin art gallery and design studio. The colorful backdrop has become somewhat of an unofficial landmark for locals and tourists, an appropriate status for the creator working on the other side of the wall. A neon Pop artist, Sanders has spent a large part of his career preserving the capital city’s soughtafter nostalgia by designing vintage-style neon signs under the moniker Roadhouse Relics. His work reflects his bold and lively town, with most pieces conveying retro phrases or silhouettes illuminated in colorful neon tubes fixed onto weathered bases. Think: classic pinup girls’ lit-up legs wearing candy-red stilettos and bright blue mason jars with animated fireflies. “Each of my art pieces looks like a rusty neon sign rescued from some old Route 66 roadhouse but is, in fact, brand-new,” Sanders says. The Texas-born talent has been making signs since his days studying graphic design at Sam Houston State University. “I fell in love with typography and working in a shop—not at a desk,” Sanders recalls. In the 1990s, the hands-on creative landed in Austin and founded his own commercial signage company. But after a decade of producing lighted signs for local businesses, he decided to pursue his craft as fine art full-time. Today, Sanders’ mostly edition-based work has found fans in such A-list celebrities as Johnny Depp and, naturally, Willie Nelson. In 2015, the artist had his first solo exhibit, at the Samuel Owen Gallery in Nantucket. “Seeing my work on the same wall as Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst was a very humbling experience,” says Sanders, who credits both of these Pop art icons as having help shaped his career.

Sanders is unsurprisingly old-school about his technical process. Eschewing computer graphic programs like Photoshop, the artist hand-sketches every detail of his designs—from typography to graphics—on gridded sheets of vellum. He then projects each drawing onto a wall to make edits in scale before sending final specifications to a fabricator. Sanders’ reverence for the “great sign masters” of the early 20th century, including Kermit Wayne and Philip Di Lemme, is evident in these steadfast techniques. “I try to create a work of art that’s completely original while following the specifications of how neon signs were made years ago,” the artist says. Another example of this is his use of penetrating electrodes, a method in which neon

tubing bends to 90 degrees and cuts through a sign’s metal housing and metal backing— a decidedly more difficult technique than terminating at the face of the metal. Although his signs are new, Sanders works to give each a characteristically antique feel. He hand-paints all of the surface graphics on his pieces and even scrubs the housing with Scotch-Brite pads so it rusts quickly, resulting in a certain patina. These days, the maker also juxtaposes his art’s kitschiness with more modern, sometimes cheeky phrases. A recent iteration shamelessly illuminates the letters “WTF.” “I love knowing my works will live much longer than I will,” Sanders says. “It’s my way of writing onto the world, ‘Todd was here.’ ”

ome may view an antique rolling pin as simply an old kitchen utensil. But when interior designer Sarah Eilers spied a collection of them that belonged to client Jamie Sanford’s grandmother, she saw a design opportunity. “I try to include elements that are meaningful to the homeowners whenever possible,” says Eilers, who commissioned a local artist to assemble those pins and a few others into a piece now decorating a wall in her client’s breakfast room. The interior designer then proceeded to artfully arrange fishing rods and baskets in the husband’s study. “He loves to fish, and displaying items such as these helped put a personal stamp on the house,” she explains. Eilers’ desire to create a home unique to its inhabitants is a common theme throughout her projects. “In this case, Jamie came to us with some inspiration pictures, giving us a sense of her style but no distinct direction,” says Eilers, whose project designer, Laura Beth Rickaway, helped bring

this home to life. “When that happens, we take the client shopping and expose them to as many ideas as possible.” From the onset, the interior designer strives to decipher the homeowners’ individual preferences and include them throughout process. That level of interactivity was just what Jamie envisioned when she and her husband, Key, purchased the Acadianstyle home in Houston’s Memorial neighborhood. After years of small-town life in Katy and with three grown sons out the door, the couple wanted to start fresh—while bypassing the construction stage. “We didn’t want to wait two to three years for completion, so when we found a spec house with a good floor plan and a flexible builder, we went for it,” Jamie says. residence’s rustic French exterior, a collaboration with architect Craig Stiteler, remained intact. “Part of the home’s attraction is that it’s not just another Mediterranean-style house,” the architect explains. “Things like the brick walls and slate roof with clay hips and bridges set it apart.” For his part, Stiteler chose authentic-looking materials that react well to the area’s humidity. For instance, “integral plaster that is hand-troweled has the depth of an old-world finish and stands up to the elements better than synthetic stucco,” he says. The architect, who opted for clay brick over concrete for the same reason, wanted the house to have a timeless look, accomplished through honest, traditional materials. By her own admission, Jamie felt overwhelmed at the prospect of tackling the interiors of such a large home

alone, so she contacted finish designer Leslie Sinclair for assistance. With her guidance, they settled on pale blue for the kitchen cabinets, but for the remaining interior decisions Sinclair recommended Eilers, who took the lead from there. The interior designer invited the wife on a whirlwind tour of shops and showrooms, a hands-on experience that delighted the homeowner. “Playing a role in picking every single thing was my favorite part,” says Jamie, who reveled in touching fabrics and test-driving chairs. Already in place, the home’s reclaimed antique heart pine flooring, purchased through The Woodshop of Texas and salvaged from the American Crayon Company in Ohio, and a network of salvaged ceiling timbers provided the backdrop for the owners’ vision of timeless interiors with contemporary art accents.

A selection of rugs cemented the home’s color scheme. In the family room, for instance, a soft blue-and-beige Tabriz rug sets off the neutral-tone sofa as well as the wood-framed chair sporting a bold indigo-and-white pattern. “When you enter the house you see right through to the family room, so it needed a ‘wow’ factor like that chair,” Eilers says. Similarly, the neutral tones of the dining room’s Oushak rug drove the choice of pale linen on the chairs, while a whisper of blue on the draperies made of Kerry Joyce fabric ties back to the hues originally established in the kitchen. Also in the dining room, a delicate crystal chandelier suspended from the custom plaster groin-vault ceiling is one of several light fixtures employed as a statement piece. A more masculine French wood-carved version

hangs from the study’s coffered ceiling, and in the stairway a trio of suspended iron-and-glass lanterns complements the geometry of the iron-and-wood switchback staircase. “The goal was to have a cohesive mix of antique and contemporary lighting,” Eilers says. In a final flourish, Eilers seamlessly related the interiors to the outdoor living spaces. In lieu of a matchy-matchy approach, she mixed cast-aluminum sofas with a zincand-teak coffee table in the covered outdoor living area and blended slipcovered chairs and teak benches in the space’s dining area. “It’s easy to one-stop shop for outdoor furnishings,” she says, “but a collected look creates a connection from inside to outside and ties everything together.”
The covered outdoor patio is a four-seasons gathering spot. Croquet aluminum chairs and a sofa, all from Summer Classics in Pelham, Alabama, flank an antique coffee table from the homeowners’ collection. Splish Splash Pools designed and installed the swimming pool, visible in the background.

uilding a home from the ground up is no easy feat, but designer Emily Seiders has more experience than most—not to mention talented friends to lend a hand. After she and husband Rick purchased a lot in Austin’s Rollingwood neighborhood, Seiders enlisted close colleague and residential designer Ryan Street—whom she calls “a visionary”—to help conceptualize her family’s new abode. “I asked him to take traditional architecture and make it feel young, fresh and contemporary,” she recalls. The result: a cottage-style home with a highpitched roof and slurried-brick exterior. Merged with wooddormer siding, steel-framed French doors at the front entry and a standing-seam roof, the home’s softly undulating surface imparts a decidedly modern edge. “The brick is there, but it has a subtle texture that doesn’t overwhelm the architecture,” Street says. And while the form is traditional, the detail is modernized. A strong connection between the landscape and the interior also made the designer’s priority list. As an homage to Seiders’ roots in the South, where brick is a prominent architectural detail, a wall surrounding the lot and a brick wall in the front foyer both remain untouched, sans slurry. Likewise, ample metal-framed windows and doors ensure vistas of the leafy surroundings while complementing the home’s white walls and wide-plank wood flooring. And to preserve a pair of oak trees in the front yard while also maintaining ample lawn space for the couple’s 8-year-old son, the house stretches across a narrow swath of the property, with a swimming pool carved into the rear foundation alongside a spacious patio off the living room. “We removed the mass and made it an outdoor space underneath the roofline,” Street says. “It’s about blurring the line between inside and outside.” Turning attention to the interiors, Seiders seized the opportunity to infuse her own aesthetic throughout. The designer selected furnishings that interact in delightful ways while adding texture and interest to the neutral canvas. “I like to balance shapes and create a yin and

yang in every space,” she explains. “Each piece in the house has a story. We love that.” A free-form teak cocktail table, for instance, brings an organic sensibility to the linear architecture and tailored furnishings in the lofted formal living room, while a custom dark stone fireplace mantel adds visual and tactile contrast. The balancing effect continues in the dining room, where the eye dances from a vintage Murano glass chandelier to the dark-stained bar cabinetry contrasting with a custom-bleached white-oak table. Contemporary upholstered seating is paired with 19th-century Spanish baroque chairs, a nod to the couple’s travels and studies in Spain. “To achieve a pleasing neutral room that’s not flat or boring, it’s critical to have a mix of textures,” Seiders says. “I like leather, rawhide and steel—things nature provides for us.” Another standout nature-derived element in the home—thanks to Rick’s access to beautiful stone slabs through his importing company—is the Calacatta marble in the kitchen. Applied on the waterfall-style island and the backsplash, it originated from the same block used throughout the One World Observatory lobby in Manhattan. “These pieces of stone come out of the earth,” Seiders says. “They are so stunning and dramatic.” Builder Ben Bailey employed 3-D modeling to ensure correct veining and returns for the island and the backsplash, which integrate seamlessly with the rift-sawn oak cabinetry. “There was a lot of attention to detail to the nth degree,” he says. The builder’s millwork team constructed the kitchen cabinetry and installed the horizontal wide-plank lacquered-black wall paneling in the window space just off the kitchen. “The nook creates a dark moment to balance all the light,” Seiders notes. “The home has a lot of little alcoves like this for a happy moment.” Design moments also emerge outside, where landscape architect Bill Bauer, along with project manager Marcus McKenzie, concocted a spectacular steel stairway with built-in planters leading from the elevated back patio to the grassy lawn. “The stairs create pattern in the landscape and become a major element instead of just being a transition,” Bauer explains. The feature also reiterates the balance achieved throughout the interiors, as the silver ponyfoot in the planters will eventually spill over and conceal the stairs like a flowing blue waterfall integrated into stones. Elsewhere outside, Street’s design left more than enough lawn where the son and his dog, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, can play. With all the details in place and the residence’s casual-yet-sophisticated vibe, “it feels like home,” Seiders says. Yet there’s plenty of room for the family to continue to personalize, the designer acknowledges. “We have a few blank walls, but I’m trying to let them sit for a while,” she says. “I’m sure we’re going to have more adventures, and we’ll fill any empty spaces with meaningful art and keepsakes we acquire along the way.”
