On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”

Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

W
ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look

at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”

The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

Collected, crafted and curated are the words artist and interior designer Teresa Davis uses to describe her aesthetic, as well as the common thread that unites her residential designs. “My motto has always been, ‘It’s the mix, not the match,’ ” she says. I’ll never forget the first time I attempted to draw the human figure in college, and how completely captivated I was with the idea of recreating movement from this fluid subject. How does your knowledge of fine art inform your interior design work? My design work has always included pieces from all disciplines: drawing, painting, photography, textiles and pottery. My art influence provides the character, warmth and sparkle that my clients appreciate. How do you envision your latest artwork fitting into a home’s interiors? My work spans several genres, and you’ll see stylized traditional figures coexisting with unrecognizable deconstructed figures. Both styles partner perfectly with each other in any interior space. Although I prefer working large and love the power a bold piece brings to a room, I also do smaller paper pieces that can be mixed on a gallery wall.

And you love a good mix! My personal style is very much a collected, layered look; a visual conversation about living with things I love and am drawn to. I’ve always been crazy about one-of-akind pieces and those crafted by the human hand. I search long and hard for pieces that tell a story, and I am ecstatic when a client provides treasures to be incorporated in a project. OPEN HOUSE SALT CREEK HOME
Vail Valley home decor shops haven’t historically been a destination for gypset style—until Lauren Hauser breezed into town, bohemian furnishings and accessories in tow. Three years ago, Hauser opened Salt Creek Home in Edwards; just recently, she moved to a larger space to better display an ever-changing inventory that includes furnishings from Four Hands, John Robshaw textiles, all natural candles by K. Hall Designs, Eberjey lingerie, and a texture-rich collection of rugs, blankets, accent pillows, art, tableware and bold statement lighting. Hauser’s East Coast roots are evident in her choice of breezy colors and patterns, but overall, the mix is decidedly eclectic, “which is different for the mountains,” she says. “A lot of people here have second homes and want them to feel heavy and cozy. This vibe is lighter, more playful and fun, and definitely less predictable. The pieces I’ve gathered here give a house its own sense of style and life.”
WHAT: Schumacher’s vibrant posts, featuring interiors from her portfolio as well as her design discoveries from around the world, are arranged in what she calls a “color wave”—every week or so, the featured palette shifts to a new hue inspired by the season. The spaces you’ll discover here are all about the mix: “Not one style, but an infusion of many,” Schumacher says. Think: “A carved door from Rajasthan with a Moroccan rug and a modern sofa. I love a well-traveled home and a room that tells a story.” WHY: If you’re on the fence about incorporating more color into your rooms, Schumacher’s ideas, insights and beautifully curated collection of envelope-pushing designs might just give you the nudge you need. MEET the MAKER In an era of disposable furniture, the idea of fixing up a timeworn table or chair sounds almost radical—but not to siblings Sam, Jake and Hannah Becker, co-owners of Kin Furniture Co., a restoration and repair woodshop located in Denver’s Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. Since launching their business in Greeley in 2011, they’ve helped a diverse clientele restore priceless antiques, repair iconic midcentury modern designs and update contemporary pieces to reflect current trends. Using period-appropriate materials and finishes collected over time and stored in their 3,000-square-foot warehouse, the Beckers address the broken elements of “just about anything made out of wood,” Sam says. For them, preserving history, honoring fine craftsmanship and inspiring reuse is a passion—and an imperative. “Ninety percent of the projects we work on are family heirlooms and pieces of sentimental value,” Sam says. “Making sure they are repaired properly so they can be passed down and have a whole new history attached to them is the most important thing.” kinfurnitureco.com

Over the past four decades, the mountain homes that dot Aspen’s scenic slopes have changed dramatically. Few architects have been as immersed in that shift as Bill Poss, who has overseen the design of more than 200 homes in the valley since founding his eponymous firm in 1976. Last August, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver made Nora Burnett Abrams one of the youngest museum directors in the country when she was promoted to the position of Mark G. Falcone Director. In her previous roles at the museum, Abrams developed conventionbusting exhibitions that explore little-known episodes in artists’ careers. Here, she shares what the museum’s next chapter will look like with her at the helm. mcadenver.org
How has Colorado architecture changed over the past 40 years? When I started as a one-person firm, projects were simpler and smaller. Now the houses are much more sophisticated—8,000 to 10,000 square feet, with theaters, gourmet kitchens and indoor wellness spas. Your practice has changed as well. Initially, it was totally residential, but we had such a style and reputation that our clients started having us do their projects in other parts of the country. What advice would you give young architects in the Valley today? Ask questions and stay open to clients’ expectations. A lot of architects say, “I need to express myself,” but I believe our job is to express what our clients’ expectations are.
What do those expectations tend to look like these days? We’ve seen clients go from preferring a cabinlike aesthetic to more contemporary designs. Homeowners are bringing in chefs to cook for them now, requiring specific kitchen equipment, and incorporating wellness features like hydrotherapy and light therapy into bathrooms. On larger properties, we’re even building wilderness cabins that our clients can hike or cross-country ski to from their main residences. Tell us what’s on the boards in your studio. We’re presently working on a conference resort at Denver International Airport called Zentana, where groups of all sizes can come to meet and solve business problems while also enjoying spa and wellness programs.
How do you envision MCA Denver relating to the community? My ideas prioritize working closely with organizations in fields adjacent to the arts. If an artist is doing a project reckoning with some aspect of climate change, for example, why shouldn’t we partner with The Nature Conservancy or the Denver Museum of Nature & Science? Artists inherently look at problems from a slightly skewed point of view, so I feel they can lead us in a positive direction around some of the most vexing issues of our day. Will you continue to play a part in curating exhibitions? Yes, I will. There is an artist whose work is visually very rich and catches one’s eye, but the stories behind the pictures are really emotionally charged. Giving him a platform to create a new body of work and connect it to Denver is one of the next big things that I’m focused on. And finally, will you wear more great statement necklaces? I do love a chunky, eye-catching necklace. I’m not one to wear a bright yellow plaid dress, but a bright yellow necklace against a black dress is something I absolutely love.

You’ve likened MCA Denver to a motorcycle: quick and nimble. What avenues would you like to explore? Part of our ability to be agile comes from willing to depart from conventional programming and discussion around the arts. For example, in January, we will host the traditional conversations with artists who are showing at the museum, but we also want to offer workshops in which they’ll lead people though exercises that allow them to get more deeply into the creative process.

For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully,� the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. “A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. ANGELA OTTEN After taking on her first kitchen design in 2000, Angela Otten was hit with one of those pivotal realizations that defines one’s life. “It had clicked,” she says. “I’d found my calling.” Since then, she has become the owner and lead designer of Inspire Kitchen Design Studio, a Denver-based firm dedicated to perfecting the heart of the home. With her background in fine arts as an inspiration, Otten marries form and function through a focus on proportion, balance, tone and value.

They Said She Couldn’t … “ … I knew I could. I had a collection of three, hand-milled shepherd’s huts from Poland, each almost 80 years old, shipped and remade. They were disassembled and sent to Lake Creek, Colorado, where they were then reassembled by four Polish master carpenters and cabinetmakers. Many doubted I could make it all come together, but the results were beautiful.”
KASIA KARSKA The technique that has most defined Kasia Karska’s work is probably the act of listening. “I learn from every client,” she shares. “Rather than repeat previous designs, or engage my own inspirations, I walk alongside the client as they run with their vision. I am a guide and source of expertise.” Her only overarching goals, as she runs her namesake firm Kasia Karska Design, are to explore, collaborate and, as she describes it, “build sanctuaries.”

DAWN WILKINSON Where there is a strong leader, one will often find deep roots of entrepreneurship. This is exemplified in Dawn Wilkinson, who owned her first company in high school. Today, she is the president and CEO of Six Walls Interior Design, through which she exercises her business savvy and creative chops in tandem. She calls it “challenging and extremely rewarding,” and says she is eagerly awaiting her next endeavor of focus: opening a Colorado studio.

For this Boulder home, the design team at Surround Architecture created a more compact stone-lined entry that opens to a soaring space containing the living room, kitchen and dining area. “The entry gives an idea of compression, and then when you walk farther in the expanse is revealed—it’s a moment that feels really good,” says architect Dale Hubbard. The Croft House sofas in front of the stone hearth provide another feel-good moment.
W
hen a Chicago couple with three children decided they wanted a lifestyle change, it set them on an adventure that landed them more than 1,000 miles away in the house of their dreams. “We realized we could live anywhere, as long as it was near an airport,” remembers the husband. “So, we started thinking about where that place would be.” Although they spent hours considering the ideal location, they kept coming back to Colorado, given the happy childhood memories the husband had of camping and skiing with his family in Steamboat Springs. As they researched the perfect town, all signs seemed to point to Boulder. “It has everything we want—including access to nature and better weather,” the husband notes. With their location determined, they set out to build their dream house. “We found a lot in an awesome neighborhood that offers both nature and a great community,” says the husband. “We wanted our kids to spend a ton of time outside, and this neighborhood has great access to trails.” The next part of the adventure involved building a structure that made the most of the site while allowing the homeowners to live the family life they envisioned. Since they would be managing the project remotely, working with a team they could trust was key. “They were only on the job site a handful of times, and the trust they put in us was extraordinary,” says general contractor Tom Stanko. “Every person there knew the family had a lot of faith in us, and we did our best to give them the house they wanted.”

Opposite: Given that the owners are part of a large family, having comfortable guest quarters was a must. “We wanted this house to be the family headquarters,� says the husband. This guest room is outfitted with a vintage metal cart, as well as an armchair, ottoman and dresser from Room & Board. Below: Hubbard envisioned the master suite as a sanctuary, so the master bathroom is a serene, window-lined space. The oval bathtub is by Victoria + Albert and perches on a slate herringbone tile floor. The beefy vanity top is a custom design and crafted with honed dolomite.

What that looked like was hard to categorize. The homeowners came to architects Dale Hubbard and Kim Cattau and residential designer Anna Slowey with the idea of a modern farmhouse. “The thing about that term is that it has been used so often, it can mean just about anything,” says Hubbard. “But after talking with the clients, we realized that what they wanted was a family compound on their land—something with deconstructed massing, like a group of buildings you’d find on a traditional farm. We also realized that they wanted ornament that was deliberate, utilitarian and almost industrial in feel.” Slowey notes that the choice of color palette and crisp details advance the concept of a modern farmhouse. “Everything is crisp and beautifully articulated,” she says. “We took the traditional idea of a black and white color palette and modified it a bit, nothing here is a true black—the dark color comes from blackened steel. It gives the house a clean, modern feel.” The house became a U-shaped structure that, at first glance, resembles a cluster of buildings. In this configuration, one wing is for the bedrooms, the other is a guest suite and in between—or the bottom part of the U—is the public space comprising the entry and a combined great room, kitchen and dining room. One of the forces that propelled this family from the Midwest to the mountains was a desire for their kids to live outside. With that in mind, Cattau says that the architects designed the house from the “inside out,” making access to the yard and the open spaces beyond priority. “We worked to make the volumes inside feel good, they are comfortable and flow together—it’s an easy space to be in,” she says. “But we also worked to make sure that all those rooms have access or sight lines to the yard and the hills.” In practice, this means that someone could get up from the kitchen table and walk unimpeded through the large sliding doors and into the pool, if they are so inclined. The same goes for the ground-level master suite.

Landscape architect Luke Sanzone says that the entire property was “conceived as a conduit and connection to the incredible mountain vista and open space.” He notes that the planting design was also inspired by the flourishing native landscape of the mountains above the house. An outdoor seating area is furnished with lounge furniture and RH lighting .
The outdoor space, executed in concert with landscape architect Luke Sanzone, looks like a residential version of a mountain resort. After all, it contains the aforementioned pool, an in-ground spa, a generous lawn and a large fire pit all set against the backdrop of rolling mountains. But this is sophistication for all ages; the boulders surrounding the pool are set in a way that allows kids to climb and, most importantly, leap into the pool. “The home is designed with a series of little landing spots and places to retreat,” says Slowey. “The landscape is no different, it has very intentional destinations to gather. The whole backyard has a very fun feeling.” It’s a feeling that flows upstairs to the kids’ rooms, which were crafted not only for rest, but for sleepovers with cousins who visit frequently. “We worked in collaboration with designer Megan Hudacky on all the rooms, and we wanted to make the boys’ room feel a bit like a sleepaway camp,” says Slowey. Adds Hubbard, “you could look at the entire project as a sanctuary.” And after the stress of relocating, a sanctuary was what was called for. “To pack up and move like that was scary,” says the husband. “But it was so much fun to have the vision, and then execute it. Today we walk around in the house we dreamed about, and watch our kids enjoy it as we hoped.” This is one leap of faith that had a happy landing.

or Denver artist Jane Guthridge there’s something special about the sunshine in Colorado and the magic of big open skies. Armed with a camera, Guthridge hunts for these luminous moments, whether shimmering through a heat wave or bouncing across a frozen creek. These foraged fragments find new life in her amorphous sculptures, paintings and installations. Manipulating the radiant potential of paint, plastic and metal, she creates works that explore how light moves through nature. “My work all comes from patterns of light, its movement and rhythm,” she says. Perhaps Guthridge’s favorite natural phenomenon of all is komorebi—a Japanese term that describes the way sunshine filters through trees. These dappled patterns echo throughout her work, starting with her encaustic wax paintings on mulberry paper. “Where the paper becomes saturated with wax, it becomes translucent,” she says. “I love how it almost seems to suspend light.” This technique helped capture the way light diffuses through color, like sunshine through leaves. But the artist soon sought ways to also conjure komorebi’s shifting shadows. “I wanted to explore how shadows could become part of the piece,” notes Guthridge. To create a more dimensional experience, the artist turned to sculpture using an unexpected source—Dura-Lar, a polyester film commonly used for stenciling. “It has this beautiful matte finish that holds light,” explains the artist. Using her field photography as a reference, Guthridge plots abstract light patterns through a computer program and has these motifs laser-cut in massive sheets of film by fabricators. When filled with holes, the Dura-Lar “becomes fluid,” enabling her to create sculptural webs that can cascade down and across walls. She has a rough

sketch of the composition that functions less like a map and more of “a calligraphic gesture.” This gives her freedom when arranging the DuraLar components together, shining a photo light though the structure “to see what the shadows are doing,” says Guthridge. For her public art projects, the artist has turned to more durable Plexiglas and aluminum to recreate the same movements and shadows, so “they all react to light in the same way,” she explains. Guthridge also manipulates the luminous qualities of paint on her sculpture, whether applying soft acrylic washes to preserve translucency, or spraying on glossy finishes to add reflective shine. Interacting with architecture marks the next stage of her sculptural experimentation, like her 2018 installation Suspended Light, where she strung together scraps of Dura-Lar from her previous wall sculptures to create teardrops of light curving around the staircase at The Elizabeth Hotel in Fort Collins. She recreated the same effect in resin-coated silk for her Shimmer installation, capturing sunshine from a skylight. The goal of these projects, and of all her work, “is to create an experience that feels bigger than ourselves,” says Guthridge. “I want to bring in the light wherever it can uplift us all.”

s a professional couple with young kids were building their family home in the Wash Park neighborhood, they found themselves facing a dilemma: whether to go with sophisticated and polished interiors or keep practicality at the forefront of their plans, since the spaces would have to stand up to their active children. As it turned out, they didn’t have to choose between the two. Their design team promised that they could have both by meeting in the middle, and that’s exactly what they did. “They wanted the house to work for the whole family,” says designer Ashley Larson Eitemiller. “The homeowners were looking for a large family room for entertaining and for the kids, and a large, wraparound bar that would be open to the kitchen, dining and great rooms,” says residential designer Jim Gunther. Adds Eitemiller, “A lot of activities can happen at once in that open, communal space.” The home was designed specifically for how the family lives, with various “stowaway spots” they can use as they come and go. “They’re bringing in strollers and all of the attendant kid items,” Gunther says, “so there are multiple areas with organized storage in the home’s front, back and side so they don’t have to carry things all the way through the house, and the open space can stay neat and organized.” Function meets style with wood elements like corbels, beams and rough-sawn cedar that brings in the casual, Colorado mountain vibe the family loves. “The darker wood beams contrast with the caramel floors, making all the wood really stand out,” Eitemiller says. The couple’s art collection, which includes lots of landscape imagery, also offers a nod to the home’s Colorado aesthetic. While cool gray color palettes have been wildly popular recently, the homeowners desired more warmth in their home. “They wanted tones that would make the house feel very homey and comfortable, and they were open to jewel colors,” says Eitemiller. “Every space has some element of blue, whether it’s a deep navy, a brighter blue or a beautiful smoky gray-blue. We also brought in some neutral grays, a honey caramel and a nice plum color.” Layers of texture give the spaces dimension and visual interest. “Throughout, there’s a mix of leather, natural linen and mohair. The carpets are wool, and there are sheers on the windows that allow light in while also offering privacy,” Eitemiller says. “Every room has details designed to visually pull you through the house, such as the wallpaper in the front entry and ceiling beams in the main living spaces.” 232 / luxesource.com

Furnishings are stylish yet tough enough for a young family. In the living room, a pair of sofas in camel-colored leather marry beauty and durability, as do refined fiberglass Stone Yard coffee tables. “It looks well put together, but you don’t have to be monitoring everything that’s going on in the house,” says Eitemiller. “We also used Sunbrella outdoor fabric inside, which adds durability.” One of the primary requirements for this home was to have designated spaces where kids can just take over and play. “Right now, the sun room is used for the kiddos, and it’s a great space right off of the living room and kitchen area,” Eitemiller says. “The children can be playing in that room while their parents are cooking dinner.” There’s also a dedicated playroom upstairs near the bedrooms, and a spacious gymnastics area and playroom downstairs that is designed with no beams or poles to get in the way of the fun.

The family also has a large yard, with plenty of grass for the kids to run around on, as well as exterior entertaining spaces for adults. “The homeowners like to have friends and family over,” says general contractor Patrick Englund. “In the backyard, they have a trellis with heaters above and an exterior fireplace.” Having come from a home that wasn’t functioning well for them, the family is now enjoying the perfect balance between adult style and kid-friendly design, with fluid spaces for family life and special spots just for playtime. Meanwhile, the home’s interior spaces honor Colorado’s rugged style while giving it modern sensibility. “We wanted the family to feel comfortable, so they could really live in the house,” says Eitemiller. “They wanted a relaxed, well-designed home that could be used to its fullest without the fear of it being damaged easily. A mountain Colorado feel—but a little bit more refined.”
The walls of the sun room were painted in Benjamin Moore’s New London Burgundy. A window seat with bespoke cushions and pillows offers a perch with a view. A pair of saddle leather armchairs—already in the homeowners’ collection— add texture and durability in the heavily used space. The concrete coffee table is by CB2.

or many years, while residing in Oklahoma, a Colorado native dreamed of moving his family back to his home state. So, when a work change made it possible to return, it felt like a happy triumph. There was just one catch: The family had grown accustomed to the wide-open spaces of their property in the Sooner State, so their new home on an urban lot in the heart of Denver was an adjustment. They charged their design team—designer Colin Griffith, landscape designer Joshua Ruppert and builder George Saad—with giving their city house the same kind of connection to the land as their Oklahoma spread. Luckily, the home sits on a corner lot that overlooks Wash Park, so it came endowed with views of Smith Lake, flower gardens and winding trails.

To knit the house even closer to its site, the design team used a similar material palette—including limestone and tongue-and-groove wood panels—on both the interior and the exterior for a seamless effect. “We were creating zones for different activities within the indoor and outdoor spaces,” says Griffith. “Because they are so connected, they needed to feel similar.” The designer describes that feeling as “livable and relaxed,” which is a departure for these particular homeowners, as their previous home was much more formal. “In their Denver house, the style is sleek and clean,” says Griffith. “We used marble, steel and glass throughout, and this was something new for the clients.” In order to integrate some of the family’s traditional pieces in the contemporary space, Griffith added new

upholstery and patterns. Conversely, he made some of the stark modern architectural elements and finishes more rustic to fit the furnishings. In the sitting room, for instance, the designer used a silk wallcovering to soften the effect of three stone columns that bring an outdoor feeling indoors, while the powder room features a mica wallcovering. For aesthetic balance in the mostly contemporary kitchen, Griffith wire brushed the cabinets for a patinaed effect, wrapped drawers in leather, and installed a bronze range hood over the cooktop. To open up the home for entertaining, Griffith installed accordion glass doors between the living room and patio. Given that the interior was designed to meld with the back

courtyard, when the doors are open the transition between the areas is effortless. “The clients move through the rooms so easily, it’s almost a progressive dinner party within their own home,” Griffith says. The family inevitably ends up in the living room, their chosen lounging spot. With that in mind, Griffith installed a roomy sectional topped with colorful pillows and shearling throws for what the designer dubs a “Colorado touch.” The room is anchored by a custom designed walnut and oak coffee table with a sculptural bronze base. The table has a special connection to the site, given that some of its wood was sourced from Wash Park by Thomas Harvey, a Denver artisan.
To highlight the vertical nature of the entry, Griffith turned the stairs into a sculptural element, combining industrial powder-coated steel columns with wood, glass and a custom bronze handrail. Landscape designer Joshua Ruppert planted a birch tree outside the stair window to create a woodsy ambience and conceal the view of the neighboring home.

Belgard sofa by covering it in silver-toned fabric and then adding a pair of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Cooper swivel chairs for a comfortable conversation area. In the dining room, the limestonewrapped fireplace picks up the material used in the entry and exterior façade for a seamless look. A black oak table contrasts with the lightcolored stone and is surrounded by Bottega arm chairs from Design Within Reach and side chairs by RH. A glittering Emile Linear chandelier, also by RH, sets the room aglow.
In this house, the outdoor rooms are just as important as the interior spaces. On the rooftop deck, which offers stellar views of the park and mountains, the clients asked for a space that would allow up to 10 people to dine comfortably. Ruppert met the challenge with a dining area and a fire pit, as well as several trees for an “in the treetops” effect. On the lower-level courtyard and patio, Ruppert used plants to provide beauty as well as privacy. “We layered the spaces with trees, shrubs and flowers in such a way that it feels private but doesn’t totally close out the yard from the rest of the neighborhood,” he explains. Ruppert and his team used a similar planting strategy outside of the windows to create the feeling of a forest in the city. “We placed a birch tree right in front of the window that faces the stairway,” he says. “It’s lit up at night, so it feels like you’re in a wooded environment.” Griffith says that, inside or out, the best thing about the new home is that people feel a sense of peace and relaxation in the spaces. “We are all so busy and tethered to technology today, but when you leave your phone and go for a walk in the park, it cleanses your mind, almost like meditation. We really tried to implement that feeling of tranquility in this house.” And, for this family, that feeling is the ultimate homecoming.

K.H. WEBB ARCHITECTS The story of K.H. Webb Architects is one of measured growth inspired by boundless passion. Based in Colorado but employed throughout the world, from California and Palm Beach to Nicaragua and Jamaica, the firm was founded by namesake and president Kyle H. Webb in 1999. While it jumped from an office of one to five in the first two years, that evolution has slowed, with most of those early hires still on staff 20 years later. According to Webb, this was somewhat intentional. “Our focus has been on our craft more so than our own expansion,” he says. “Besides, we have a great thing going with this particular group of creatives.” If client feedback is any indication, this is undoubtedly true. After all, what review is greater than a request for round two? More than 60 percent of K.H. Webb Architects’ projects are done for repeat clients. Webb attributes this to his team’s approach. While he expresses a fascination with clean, modern design and warm, neutral materials, Webb identifies his firm’s work as bespoke above all else. So naturally, the client must be heavily involved. “They are a part of our team from day one,” Webb says. “Ideally, we spend a lot of time up front learning about their vision, traveling to their other homes and getting to know their family, before we start drawing.”

ANDREA SCHUMACHER INTERIORS Known for her use of color, patterns and textures, and incorporating found objects and furniture with clean-lined upholstered goods, designer Andrea Schumacher defines her work as “modernist traditionalism.” Some years ago, after the publication of the whole-home remodel she carried out on her own residence in the Sloan’s Lake area, Schumacher saw an uptick in inquiries and was able to hire her first employee. Thus, Andrea Schumacher Interiors came to be, and the journey has been rewarding—for all involved—ever since. “My greatest success has been the friendships I’ve made along the way,” Schumacher says. “I feel so grateful to have a job that allows me to get to know people personally. It’s a process to complete a home the right way, and those clients who understand that and can enjoy it … they are real gems!” While some of these homeowners want to be heavily involved in every aspect of their design, others would rather Schumacher take the reins. Ask the Expert Share your influences and inspirations. I’m forever indebted to my grandmother. She was an artist, and her work was worldly and fearless. She produced pieces for more than 50 years. They range from sketches that look very European to modern, cubist creations to botanical studies, and more. She taught me that if you do what you love, the money will follow. I’m currently working on releasing a wallpaper/fabric line inspired by her art. What areas of focus or types of projects do you specialize in? Having lived in Los Angeles for years and also being from Colorado, I get a lot of California transplant projects. We also have roots in ski resort homes and ranches. We love a residence that infuses modern into mountain.

Luxe Interiors + Design and ASID partnered on the Johnson House renovation project. The restoration of the historic Central City home showcased the collaboration of local Colorado sponsors and interior designers who supported the project, which benefited Central City Opera.
SUMMER PARTY WITH KOELBEL, DESIGNS BY SUNDOWN AND FORTIS PRIVATE BANK Koelbel, Designs by Sundown and Fortis Private Bank hosted a summer gathering bringing together Denver's leading professionals. Guests enjoyed music and sumptuous food while discussing trends in custom home and landscape design.
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS COLORMIX EVENT
Sherwin-Williams hosted an event for emerging design professionals, with a private reception and behind-the-scenes architectural tour of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The tour was followed by a Colormix CEU and Celebration of Color party. To close the evening, guests were treated to a private viewing of Colorado Ballet's Don Quixote.
