This penthouse en suite is for a creative woman whose daytime life often rolls into the nighttime social. She loves the best of the best and is very particular.

Toronto It is a city that never looks back, which is also a great definition for contemporary design. Even so, I wanted to create an elegant bathroom that deserves multiple looks.

The rounded shower and dark tile work create a gracious cocoon that is designed to perform double duty. For relaxing in the evening, there’s the double rain head shower system.

For rejuvenation in the morning, I included the Percy® Personal Shower Set with Hand Shower.

I added a few luxurious touches like a floating vanity, then introduced custom ombré fabric, strategic lighting and soft colors like blush to add warmth and quiet drama to the room’s clean lines. By incorporating two different sizes of under counter sinks from the Pop® Collection, I increased usability without threatening the room’s minimalistic origins. All that’s necessary, with nothing that’s not.

What type of design inspires you most? I wouldn’t say there is any one specific style of design I like most, but I do find myself drawn to rooms brimming with colors, patterns and textures. Dream subject: Paige Cleveland of Rule of Three. I’ve been following her work for quite some time, and I cannot seem to figure out how she, a textile designer who specializes in the art of marbling, is able to make drops of paint dance on water and then seemingly transfer it to fantastical silks so effortlessly. Any books on your radar? I’ve recently been inspired

by Katie Ridder: Rooms by Heather MacIsaac. Whether it’s choosing the right scale, pairing unexpected colors or just paying attention to the most minute of details, Ridder’s design work is beautiful and livable. Her dreamy interiors are simply breathtaking, and I find it personally motivating that she was never professionally trained, proving that you don’t necessarily need schooling in a certain field to have a successful career. If I had $20,000 to blow, I’d buy… Bolts and bolts of Schumacher’s Citrus Garden fabric. I could cover literally every inch of my home in the whimsical, vintage-inspired Josef Frank print, and I would still never grow tired of it.

Schumacher actually produced the print in a wallpaper earlier this year; so, technically, my dream is one step closer to coming true!

GRACE MOEN Writer / Portland On your design wish list: A library—with shelves that extend from the impossibly high ceilings down to the floor. There would be big windows streaming in natural light and cushions everywhere for ultimate reading vibes. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: Diana Vreeland. She has, of course, long since passed, but her books and her interviews make her the most compelling, relentlessly fabulous person I’ve ever come across. She threw out the rule book and imported global fashion aesthetics into the American lifestyle. As an editor for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, and a consultant for The Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, she had major influence at a time when it was unseemly for women to work outside the home at all.

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? Expend more effort looking for opportunities outside your immediate environment, and ask for the opportunities you seek. There are endless internship positions that will serve your resume, your network and your experience, so don’t wait.

Seek harder. Ask louder. If not a writer, I would be… A writer. No, seriously.

Sometimes, I moonlight as a conference producer, and I love that curatorial and technical process, but I found my calling in writing, and I’m sticking to it!

DAVID PAPAZIAN Photographer / Portland If you could photograph a home anywhere in the world, where would it be? I’ve been fortunate to have traveled to Rome, one of the world’s greatest cities, numerous times for non-architectural photo shoots and would jump at the opportunity to shoot a home there. I envision a classic Roman exterior with a hip modern interior near the Spanish Steps. Whose work are you influenced by design-wise? Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. He was before his time and set trends in both furnishings and architecture. Preferred superpower: It would be awesome to have the power of duplication, giving me the option of being in two places at the same time—to see my two kids on the East Coast and my youngest son on the West Coast. Most memorable Luxe shoot: I was privileged to work on a classic midcentury modern project in my hometown of Portland, Oregon, with an updated architectural design by Timothy Schouten and Dave Giulietti consisting of strong roof lines, a pitched ceiling and a sprawling footprint.

PAUL SIRISALEE Photographer / New York How did you get your start in photography? When I was in high school, I picked up a camera and randomly took a picture of some clouds in my backyard. After seeing the print of it, I knew I wanted to learn more about the process of taking pictures and printing them in a darkroom. My biggest creative influences come from… My parents. Both architects, they exposed me to design at an early age, which taught me to see everything in an organized fashion. Top three most-prized possessions: My camera, a set of china inherited from my parents and my skateboard. If money were no object, I would buy… A Porsche 911 GT2 RS. What’s intriguing you right now in the world of design? Industrial and automotive design. I find them both to be really inspiring. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: My wife.

Dating back to the 18th century, literary salons once served as gathering places for artists and intellectuals to hold animated discussions of the day’s events. So, in the spirit of lively discourse, Luxe surveyed artists, designers, curators and shopkeepers to get their take on the defining people and events that stoked creativity and stimulated conversation in 2017. Common themes emerged: The first is that artists seem

Designer Nicolette Mayer worked with a team of artisans to translate classic Royal Delft ceramic pieces into two-dimensional images using a series of photographs.

DELFT TOUCH

Designer Nicolette Mayer was just 12 years old when she moved to the United States from her native South Africa, but she never forgot the Dutch porcelain of her childhood. “I grew up fascinated by the confluence of cultures in South Africa, and one of my fondest memories is of blue-and-white Delft ceramics,” says Mayer.

Flash forward to the Maison&Objet fair in Paris two years ago: Mayer found herself a few booths down from the Royal Delft display, so she approached them with the idea of collaborating on a wallpaper

and fabric collection. The result is the first worldwide licensing agreement to bring the company’s nearly 365-year-old signature patterns to the coverings and soft goods market. The offerings, which are available through Scalamandré, consist of swoon-worthy looks printed on a range of surfaces, including metallic grass cloth and pearlescent wallpaper, as well as fine Belgian linen.

on the matching sets of porcelain vessels that garnished the mantels, doorways and cupboards of great manor houses from the 1640s through the 1700s. That the paper features vases packed with painterly tulips is another nod to the porcelain company’s Dutch heritage.

Other patterns feature such iconic elements as peacocks, urns and the highly collectible pyramidshaped vases known as tulipieres—once a prized possession of Europe’s kings and queens. While many of the designs remain faithful to the spirit of Royal Delft, there are a few exceptions, such as the Flora & Fauna pattern, which features scattered blooms on a field of bold colors ranging from acid green to electric blue. “We wanted to do something more modern and edgy, so we took some poetic license,” Mayer says, though the majority of the collection does stay true to the legendary two-tone palette. “There’s just something so crisp and classic about blue and white together. It’s a color combination that speaks across cultures.”

A TRIO OF SARTORIAL EXHIBITS LOOKS AT THE INFLUENCE OF THE ART WORLD ON LEGENDARY DESIGNERS AND THE MOST ICONIC PIECES IN OUR COLLECTIVE CLOSETS. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE

Long before he became a designer, Christian Dior was part of the avant-garde art scene in Paris. In 1928, he partnered first with French art dealer and collector Jacques Bonjean and later with Pierre Colle to launch a small gallery, where he represented both well-known and soon-tobe-famous artists of the day, such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Alexander Calder and Max Ernst. “His dialogue with the arts was a permanent one,” says Olivier Gabet, director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, who curated this collection for the museum’s celebration of the 70th anniversary of the House of Dior. Along with over 300 haute couture gowns is a stunning display of accessories, atelier toiles, photographs, illustrations, sketches, letters and advertisements. The influence of art on Dior can be seen throughout the exhibition. “Sometimes the link is clearly identified, sometimes it is a poetic evocation of a moment in his life and his culture,” observes Gabet. IS FASHION MODERN?

How does the way we dress impact society?

That’s the question that the MoMA’s senior curator of architecture and design, Paola Antonelli, asks in the museum’s first fashion exhibition since Bernard Rudofsky’s “Are Clothes Modern?” in 1944.

Inspired by Rudofsky’s project, this retrospective showcases 111 pieces of fashion, including the little black dress, the hijab and even Converse All Stars.

Each piece chosen has had significant impact on culture and is presented alongside images and videos examining the item’s history and evolution.

“Fashion is a part of design, and even esoteric design is always connected somehow to our daily lives,” says Antonelli. The Museum of Modern Art, New York City, through January 28, 2018

SHAPING FASHION

Cristóbal Balenciaga has been called “the master of us all,” by Christian Dior; “the only couturier in the truest sense of the word,” by Coco Chanel; and “fashion’s Picasso,” by Cecil Beaton.

“Balenciaga was one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century,” says Cassie Davies-Strodder, who curated this exhibition of over 100 garments crafted by the Spaniard and his protégées, as well as contemporary designers. It wasn’t just Balenciaga’s rebellious approach to women’s fashion—his architectural aesthetic defied the restrictive female silhouettes of the past— that made him an innovator, but also his use of materials and his focus on the handcrafted. Says Davies-Strodder, “At the height of his success in the 1950s, Balenciaga’s exquisite craftsmanship, pioneering use of fabric and innovative cutting set the tone for the modernity of late 20th-century fashion.” Victoria and Albert Museum, London, through February 18, 2018

CHECK IN HOTEL EMC2 Named for Albert Einstein’s famous physics formula, Hotel EMC2 in downtown Chicago bills itself as the “intersection of art and science.” To start, local architect Jackie Koo wrapped the façade base of the Autograph Collection hotel in stainless-steel panels in three colors, mimicking the pattern of a tesseract. New York-based Rockwell Group adorned the lobby with a 19th-century zoetrope machine, thought-provoking art and vintage books, while the in-house restaurant— named Albert, a nod to the renowned scientist—pours house-made liquor at the bar through a custom glass chandelier-like piece dubbed the “infusary.” Each guest room was designed to reflect the charm of 1920s science laboratories, and the bathrooms resemble a wet lab. Clear a weekend to hit up these recent design openings in the Windy City. The Mart has two new tenants in Gaggenau (222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 108), which has opened its flagship showroom there, and leather brand Moore & Giles (222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 1424-A), where its first-ever stand-alone store is outfitted with thousands of swatches. Across the street, Apex Wood Floors (208 W. Kinzie St., Suite 2) brings a new and highly sought-after resource for Midwest designers and architects, and in the same building, furnishings designer Jiun Ho (208 W. Kinzie St., 3rd Floor) has debuted his first Chicago showroom, below, chockfull of the clean lines, timeless fabrics and rich textures that define his brand.

Best places to shop: To me, the canon of great design is midcentury Scandinavian and American design, so I get my fix at places like Circa Modern and Dial M for Modern. I also recommend going to the Wright auction house to view the lots in advance, when you can get up close and personal to take in the details. It’s better than a museum.

Recent memorable project: I had the opportunity to work with Claire Warner and Sam Vinz of Volume Gallery on the new Ace Hotel in Chicago’s West Loop. They have great relationships with an impressive roster of American design talent.

Who is someone to watch? Jonathan Nesci designs stark minimalist pieces with immaculate craft. I haven’t met him, but it’s inspiring to see him leverage the capabilities of Indiana industrial metal fabricators to create considered objects for the interior.

Rising Chicago furniture-and-object maker Taylor McKenzie-Veal knew from a young age he wanted design to be part of his future. He earned a bachelor’s in fine arts from the University of Michigan and followed it with a master’s in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Since then, he’s started a studio practice that accepts commissions and licenses products for manufacturing and has gathered plenty of accolades for his work, like being one of 11 chosen for ICFF’s 2016 Studio class. Next up is a newly launched lighting design studio, McKenzie & Keim, which he says creates “refined ceiling and wall-mounted luminaries using strictly LED technology.”

PAM LAMASTER-MILLETT AND GREG HOWE A shared love of inspiring spaces brought together Chicago architects Pam LamasterMillett and Greg Howe nearly 20 years ago. Ever since, they’ve served as full-time principals at Searl Lamaster Howe Architects. These days, they’re busy with projects like a Gold Coast apartment renovation, a brick-and-timber Utah retreat and a modern take on a Glencoe lake house. They’ve also shared their ideas for reinvigorating the Windy City for the Chicago Architecture Biennial’s “Between States: Design Solutions for Chicago’s 50 Wards” exhibition, on display at the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Atrium Gallery through December 31. 11 a.m. Pop into Jason Lewis’ studio on Justine Street. His pieces are often the result of innovative techniques but always infused with a rich sense of materiality and craft. Lewis’ contemporary sensibility is enriched by his woodwork mastery.

12 p.m. Explore the exhibitions and open studios at the Bridgeport Art Center in McKinley Park.

Be sure to visit the enormous vintage warehouse, an experience in itself.

1 p.m. Have lunch at Marisol, which is tucked in the Museum of Contemporary Art. The lively restaurant also provides an excellent excuse to easily look at the museum’s latest exhibits.

2 p.m. Stop into Hasana, a pop-up women’s boutique that carries local designers who can tailor pieces to fit and send them to your home.

3 p.m. Head to Andersonville for Martha Mae: Art Supplies & Beautiful Things. With refined stationery from Appointed and crisply machined Kaweco fountain pens, you’ll be inspired to second-guess your smartphone.

4 p.m. Browse the classic and collectible cars at Evolve Motors. Whether you prefer a 1965 Citroen 2CV or a late-model Porsche 911, the curated selection here is inspiring from both a design and driving standpoint.

5 p.m. View the inventory at Bucktown’s Pavilion Antiques & 20 th C, a favorite for accessories, furniture and lighting.

Twice a year, thousands of interior designers come to Las Vegas Market to explore the latest furniture, home decor and gift products from over 4,000 exhibitors.

IMPERFECT IS THE NEW PERFECT

Imperfect elements in design have become more of a movement than just a trend. These intentional details often speak toward a style of casual elegance, which can be seen in the Sabine Coco Mirror from Palecek. Plus, this is seen in materials too. Benjamin Johnston from Benjamin Johnston Design noted that, “I am seeing materials and timeworn textures that appeal to this sense of transience.” The way some materials age naturally and transition the style of a piece plays on the idea of “Wabi Sabi,” a traditional Japanese aesthetic that is centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.

‘90s SIMPLICITY

The trend of ‘90s simplicity gives a nod to the past with the flair of the future. The return to simplicity is more about the overall look, and not just focused on individual pieces. The pared down vibe reads as smart, chic and subversively modest, from sensual shapes to luscious materials like silk and velvet. This chair from Oly Studio highlights a simple design that is amplified with accessories. Jaime Rummerfield from Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design explains that, “The simplicity of color— especially nudes and beige—has a richness to it that elevates the materials used.”

Heavy metals have been trending for years, but there is a resurgence of golds, brasses, bronzes and even chrome, being used in strong, clever ways. Ron Woodson from Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design shared his views, noting that, “There’s something very contemporary and cool about the combinations of chromes, golds, silvers—it all reads especially chic.”

Pieces such as the Gatsby Cocktail Cabinet from Jay Jeffers for Arteriors feature shades of chrome and gold with a unique twist of the texture and construction. This is yet another opportunity to acquire a unique, harder-to-come-by piece due to the mixed metal allure.

The bold uses of flora and fauna in fabric and wallcoverings feel extremely fresh. An installation of giant, moody flowers as a wallcovering—as seen in this piece from Feizy—creates a bold statement for any room. Julia Buckingham from Buckingham Interiors + Design adds that, “What I’m seeing is more original and unexpected, and even if the pattern is vintage, it still feels very ‘of-the-time.’” Similarly, using one fabric on multiple pieces offers an homage to a more traditional design principal—but by using a modern or vintage print on a low-slung sofa, the concept becomes more forward and smart.

Unique is the new chic: There is such an interesting conversation happening here between the Intersection table lamp and the C sconces. To pull off such a simplistic design requires absolute precision, especially when other textures or elements are decidedly absent. The Intersection table lamp… Has an allure all its own, too—one that is clever and electric. Lighting is the jewelry… Of any well-developed space and, as such, has the power to make a huge statement.

In the case of both designs, they stand on their own as exquisite sculptures that just so happen to also illuminate.

I relish in the unexpected… Especially with lighting and accessories, and a Serip moment is quick to incite that feeling. These pieces are not for the faint of heart, but neither is the whimsical architecture, wine, culture and all things that are Portuguese—the Luna sconces capture that essence so wonderfully. The thoughtful mix of materials… Is so on point: artisanal glass created in a way that could never be engineered. The metallic support of bronze and the simple geometry of the circular framing all amount to a design that is very versatile. My philosophy with design… Is to get weird and have a little fun, either through scale, repetition, light quality or contrasting finishes. So, I’d love to see these sconces installed in clusters on the ceiling and then trickling down the walls on either side of a vanity or in a powder room. They call to mind… The recent lunar eclipse; maybe the impact runs deeper than I thought. We are all effortlessly drawn to nature, and these sconces feel so akin to the moon majestically stacked against the sun.

For me, and for my clients, it’s often through lighting. For instance, a bold light fixture in a foyer can easily create a grand entrance, the same way a novel piece in an understated dining room can transform an otherwise simple space.

The Beauvoir torchieres… Remind me of retro microphones, a symbolic object of those times, and one that is considered legendary. I see the Beauvoir as a contemporary showpiece that has the potential to do the same.

That every space requires a statement piece— a star—in addition to costars and supporting actors. This pendant, however, could easily take center stage. I’m so attracted to… The pendant’s curvilinear and artistic quality, as well as the clean use of timeless materials.

Simplicity… Is the new luxury. An intimate corner or small vignette… Are where I imagine this piece living; its asymmetry is sure to be an eye-catcher in these cozy spaces. Good and well-crafted designs… Never go out of fashion.

1934: Fisher & Paykel is established in New Zealand by first importing refrigeration and then washing machines.

1955: Fisher & Paykel acquired Dunedin cooking range manufacturer, H. E. Shacklock Ltd., which dominated the New Zealand domestic appliance market at that time. SYNCHRONICITY by HUBBARDTON FORGE Although Synchronicity by Hubbardton Forge is a new line of lighting, Hubbardton Forge established itself more than 40 years ago … bringing nearly half a century of metalcraft, finishing techniques and lighting technology to the design table. SYNCHRONICITY AT THE FOREFRONT OF TECHNOLOGY + DESIGN A Design Début The unity of craft and glamour, Synchronicity by Hubbardton Forge featured the international début of the Swarovski Strass Wave Cut crystal. Elements are juxtaposed in beautiful and unexpected ways. Crystals from Swarovski, or blown glass made by artisans in Vermont, are cradled by steel shaped in the fires of the forge. The pendants have very intentionally placed crystals—”held” or “embraced” by hand-shaped steel, like a gem in its setting.

A Unique Process Every piece from Synchronicity is handcrafted, one at a time, upon order. Metal is shaped by hand. Crystals or artisanal glass are delicately held. Technology plays an equally important role. Today, Synchronicity’s artisans are able to bend and shape LED lighting elements so they become part of the sculptural elements of the fixture, while illuminating the space.

Fresh traditional; what I love about this style is that it borrows from modernism with clean lines and no stuffiness, but it also manages to stay true to the basic silhouettes of classic design.

How does this space cater to entertaining?

The wife enjoys cooking with her family or guests nearby, so the island—with Dessin Fournir barstools—and a peninsula open to the adjacent family room keep company close while she prepares meals. Also, a work triangle that includes the dishwasher, a Rohl farmhouse sink and the range allows her to work efficiently so she can simultaneously play hostess.

Too often in our modern era, formality is sacrificed in the name of keeping things simple, but there’s no rule that says elegant entertaining should require a Herculean effort. This season, Luxe looks to legendary interior designer Alex Papachristidis for his advice on how to create a gathering that’s both magical and stress-free. ANIMAL INSTINCT While the color and pattern of plates and linens lay the foundation of a tablescape, it’s the custom touches that add personality. Papachristidis, a lifelong animal lover, is a big believer in using whimsical pieces that speak to the host’s individuality. In addition to the pair of large yellow Chinese Fu dogs, he also included antique parrots and even camels for this setting, all from his personal collection. “I love incorporating conversation pieces because it’s unpredictable and shows a sense of humor,” he says.

Deep-hued dahlias, oxblood calla lilies and vibrant ranunculus, punctuated with seasonal fruit, including wild blackberries and pomegranates, make a festive statement in an antique tankard. “It’s hard to do an impactful arrangement in a container with a narrow mouth, so I like to use pieces like tankards or tureens,” says Papachristidis. “Aim for blooms that could fill an opening two to three times the size of your container—that way it will always look lush and dramatic.” plazaflowersnyc.com

On designing for a crowd: “I like to have at least two separate conversation areas in a room. There should be no more than 3 feet between two people when they sit to converse, so movable seating is important,” she says.

Despite being the third largest city in America, Chicago is, in reality, composed of 77 small towns; each neighborhood has its own distinct character, charm and subtleties. Hence the importance of working with a broker who knows the area, inside and out. More important, though, says KoenigRubloff broker associate Duane Shumaker, is managing clients’ expectations. “Buying and selling real estate is a business transaction, so unless you know the characters involved, and how to keep them focused, a deal can go south very quickly,” he says. Though Chicago’s market tends to be stable, it can be cyclical based on the seasons and length of time people stay in their homes. “You should buy the home you need today, but one that will still work in the years that follow,” he says. “You never know what the market holds; a two-year investment could turn into a five-year stint.” It was 20 years ago that Shumaker moved to Chicago’s trendy Gold Coast, and has never looked back. “I love finding the ‘story’ when it comes to properties,” he says. “What the property's history was, or, better yet, could be.”

How do you think your clients would characterize you?

I believe they would say I listened to them, but they would also say I watched them; I studied them. Very often, there is a huge disconnect between what people say, what they mean and what they need.

What is one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you?

I spent many a summer baling hay back home in Texas. Not sure if most know, but it can get very hot in Texas in the summer, and I’m pretty sure it’s about 48 times hotter in the hayfield.

I love both areas and do a lot of business there, but I also enjoy being able to visit an investment for the weekend with my family and just decompress. It’s a rare thing to have a tangible investment that makes family memories and joy. No matter where we go, being with family and spending quality time makes weekends complete.

What factors do you consider when choosing your own home?

It’s axiomatic but still needs to be repeated— location is key. You can’t change the location of the house. After location, I look at how the house lays out on the lot, floor plan and what I can do to add value.

Traditional styles such as Colonial, Georgian and Victorian make up much of our housing stock.

We are also seeing quite a few ‘American farmhouse' types of homes with interiors that are somewhat more contemporary than the typical home.

What factors do you consider when choosing your own home?

We like having great private outdoor space where we can retreat, but also enjoy being part of a neighborhood where neighbors are neighborly—which is just about everywhere on the North Shore.

n 2011, a British neurobiologist discovered viewing art releases a surge of the feel-good chemical dopamine into the brain, stimulating emotions akin to falling in love. If that’s the case, the owners of a 1920s apartment in the former Mayfair Regent Hotel must be in a constant state of romantic rapture. From the series of rare David Hockney portraits that line their gallery to the dueling Jean Dubuffets in the dining room, the couple’s home is a veritable pleasure palace of modernist and contemporary pieces that represent their lifetime commitment to procuring great works of art.

As interior designer Suzanne Lovell will tell you, acquiring art requires a good eye, patience and a willingness to self-educate, but hanging and displaying the pieces is an art form unto itself. “The clients asked our team to arrange the collection so people would understand it as a whole,” says Lovell, whose fine-art expertise coupled with her

architectural background made her a natural for the job.

“It was up to us to establish a storyline that ran across the entire apartment.”

But first, the residence needed a backstory of its own. When the owners moved to the Gold Coast locale, the one-time apartment hotel of 210 rooms had been transformed into 29 modern condos encased in the original vintage Beaux Arts shell. Eighteen years and three grown children later, the owners decided it was time to invigorate what was essentially a white architectural envelope into a home with a sense of history worthy of their art collection. “The lobby had classical architectural elements like wainscoting and a wonderful ceiling detail that we used as inspiration for the apartment,” says Lovell, who coincidentally consulted on the redesign of the lobby in the 1990s. “It is a way of respecting the building’s legacy.”

The plaster-medallion ceiling is among the first elements glimpsed when the elevator opens onto the apartment’s foyer, which is framed with cerused-oak paneling and intricately patterned bronze-and-glass gates. “The gates are on 180-degree hinges that allow the doors to lay back on each other, so the space can be opened up when the owners are entertaining,” Lovell explains. Conceived by the interior designer, the feature also provides a level of security for the treasures within.

The foyer’s ceiling detail repeats in the living room, where it reflects light from nearby Lake Michigan thanks to a coat of high-gloss paint. Here and in the adjacent dining area, crisp-white moldings outline walls sheathed in light knit-backed fabrics to establish a perfect backdrop for the framed pieces to come. Leaving nothing to chance, Lovell determined the placement of Louise Nevelson’s abstract collage in the dining room with careful consideration of the location of the custom Georgian mahogany table. “When it came to the design of the rooms, the artwork absolutely came first,” Lovell says. “I even designed the rhythm of the hallway for the owners’ art collection.” There, she calculated the exact number of millwork panels needed in the gallery to relate to the Hockneys.

Likewise, it is no accident that the Jean Dubuffet piece above the living room cabinet can be seen from the dining room opening, where two more Dubuffets flank the portal.

And when it came to hanging David Klamen’s depiction of a table on the opposite wall of the dining space, Lovell took care to determine the exact height that allows occupants to feel the extension of the space whether standing or seated.

“The two dining tables in the same room create a dynamic,” explains the interior designer, who painstakingly situated a bronze chandelier to work in dialogue with the painting.

“These are not just individual pieces of art. They are all coming together to tell a story.”

With the artwork in place, Lovell commenced layering the spaces, starting with the rugs and draperies. “They are the pieces that begin the transition from architecture to decorating,” she says. She then introduced neutral-toned furnishings in all-natural fibers, like supple kid glove leather on a pair of living room armchairs and a cotton-linen blend on the dining room chairs, which are enhanced with a Chippendale detail. “The furniture and fabric colors come right out of the architectural palette,” she says. “That’s how you layer successfully.”

General contractor David Schulz and site supervisor Kurt Lundgren oversaw the project’s structural changes, which included plumbing and electrical needs, new wood flooring and a gourmet kitchen with a full wall of La Cornue stoves that signal the owners’ cooking prowess. “They are true chefs who wanted a fabulous kitchen with adequate food prep and baking spaces,” Lovell says. “They like clean surfaces, and there are drawers and cabinets outfitted to match the placement of each and every cooking tool.” To meet their needs, the interior designer incorporated two oversize islands—one for prep and one for eating—as well as a storage plan designed with the same level of specificity she utilized for hanging the artwork.

Similar to all the rooms in the residence, the kitchen is a thoughtful blend of scale, proportion and color that creates a complement to the surroundings. As Lovell summarizes, “The entire home is a symphony of details designed to establish a welcoming environment while creating an intelligent dialogue with the fine art.”

A former 19th-century apartment building in Old Town was converted into a singlefamily home thanks to an ambitious homeowner and design team. H

aving the creative wherewithal to see a building’s possibilities and execute a vision is an extraordinary trait. A lifelong architecture buff had this foresight when he purchased a 19th-century brick apartment building in Old Town and took on the challenge of renovating it into a large single-family home. “In retrospect, it was a risky decision—and it took much longer than expected,” admits the homeowner, describing the structure as an impulse buy with loads of potential. “From the inside, I could do whatever I wanted, so I started by drawing a square on a piece of paper and planning for how I wanted the rooms and common areas to lay out.”

Acting as his own general contractor, the homeowner turned to architect David Raino-Ogden and designer Brandy Rinehart for help, while consulting builder Michael Hughes of The Michael J. Hughes Company assisted with final nuances of the project. Because of the building’s age, the team worked with local landmarks commissions to honor its past while respectfully modernizing it. “We negotiated to shift the stairs, so it reads more like a single-family,” RainoOgden says. The handsome corner unit’s original double doors, however, are in place, illuminated by flickering gas lanterns, a nod to the neighborhood’s historic character.

Inside, the crew lifted the ceiling and dug a deeper basement, creating room for four full levels where they were formerly only two. “We took advantage of every inch of space,” Raino-Ogden says, pointing to the new skylight that floods the open central staircase with natural daylight.

The stairway acts as a focal point on every floor, climbing to the home’s crown jewel, a gallery on the third and fourth levels filled with artwork.

The centerpiece in most rooms, meanwhile, is overhead.

A polished-tin ceiling in the kitchen, for instance, contrasts exposed custom-milled wood beams, while a coffered ceiling in the family room distinguishes the open area from the surrounding spaces. In this lower-level room, the original joists have been exposed, cleaned and stained.

“I saw this done at an art gallery in the West Loop and wanted to replicate it here,” the homeowner says. “Every room in the house has something unique about it.”

Many of the home’s most intriguing aspects come from its decor. “The rooms are really neutral, but I love the idea of introducing textures,” Rinehart says. In the kitchen, light gray custom cabinetry complements white Calacatta marble countertops, and bistro chairs wear leather from a tannery that provides material for baseball mitts. “It’s thick, rugged and masculine,” the designer says. Lighting also plays a key role in counterbalancing pieces, like a tiered crystal chandelier in the living room that elegantly juxtaposes the furnishings’ clean lines. Another glam chandelier in the formal dining room plays off a textural grass-cloth wallcovering, an exposed-brick wall and the handsome table, which is made with joists salvaged from the original home.

The interplay of elements is particularly prominent in the master bathroom, which boasts a mix of materials. Marble tile surrounds wood flooring laid in a herringbone pattern, while mosaic tile decorates the steam shower. “It gives the neutral room a bit of a punch,” Rinehart says. “There are no fewer than eight materials in there, but they are all neutral, so there is a nice flow. The devil is in the details.”

Adjacent to the bathroom, the designer thoughtfully considered the spatial possibilities in the master bedroom.

To make the room feel bigger, Rinehart elevated the flooring where the bed is positioned and created a lower-level spot for sitting in front of the fireplace on chilly evenings. “We didn’t want the space to feel constricted, so we stepped up the whole room,” she explains. “It creates a huge wonderful lounge area in the master suite.”

Warmer days, however, are best enjoyed in the home’s outdoor spaces. On the lower level, stairs lead from the living room through a set of bifold doors down to a patio grounded with square bluestone pavers surrounded by brick.

Wood fencing and an ipe-wood-lined wall complement the stone. “The juxtaposition of the wood’s sheen with the old brick is amazing,” says landscape architect Alison Gerson.

“There are so many layers.” Another deck over the garage offers spacious seating in front of a large fireplace. When the weather is nice, the homeowner can watch movies on a large removable projector screen suspended from the exterior of the house on the other side of the courtyard.

Altogether, the project is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for the resident. “I’ve always been interested in the idea of building a home from concept to completion,” he explains.

“I had enough time to work through the details, and I tried to avoid cutting corners. There were definitely challenging and stressful moments, but overall it was very exciting.”

ven if you’re not familiar with artist Nancy Rosen by name, you may very well recognize her portraits— they’re featured prominently in the buzzy Netflix comedy series Grace and Frankie. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as the title characters, an unlikely duo who become bosom buddies despite their many differences after learning their husbands have— gulp—fallen for each other. Tomlin plays Frankie, an eccentric free-spirited artist, but it is Rosen who creates the vast majority of the character’s body of work, a process she compares to her time at the Kansas City Art Institute years ago: “Somebody gives you an assignment, and you have to stay up all night getting it done,” explains Rosen, who appeared as an extra in the third-season premiere, which centered on Frankie’s art show. “Frankie’s name was on the postcards, but they were my paintings. It was an out-of-body experience.”

This moment in the spotlight has been a game-changer for Rosen. She is selling her work like gangbusters and creating more custom portraits than ever, with families sending her photos of their loved ones as subjects.

Large portraits line the walls of her bright and airy studio on Chicago’s Far North Side, and stacks of unfinished pieces are strewn about the colorful paint-splattered floor. It’s a cheerful and welcoming environment for her to work in.

Rosen’s pieces technically qualify as paintings, because paint is her material of choice. But the artist considers them drawings, because she creates forms using a bar of oil paint, rather than a brush. “I always draw the figures first,” Rosen says, “and then I begin the background. The only time I’m painting is when I’m filling in the pattern.”

She steps on the pieces as she works, often inadvertently sweeping nails, staples and other

oddities onto the paper, where they become embedded in the paint. “As I’m going along and I hit a roadblock, I alter things, figure it out and keep moving on,” she says, comparing her artistic process to life itself. “It keeps me entertained.”

For years, Rosen supplemented her paintings with beading, macramé and other endeavors that, in contrast to the intense concentration demanded by drawing, allowed the artist to “get out of her head.” She let go of these additions, however, when, in a moment of inspiration, she began using a size 00 brush to draw organic, twisting patterns in the background of her portraits. The vision flowed through her body and onto the page, putting her mind at rest. “It’s like spinning a spider web in that I can do it over and over again,” Rosen explains. “It keeps coming and coming, and I see no end to it.”

The 4,500-square-foot structure was built in 2016 and boasts four levels, including a rooftop deck.

don’t usually step back from challenges,” says Bala Ragothaman, a partner at LSV Asset Management who immigrated to the United States from India 23 years ago with $300 in his pocket. His tenacity for success would again prove useful when a straightforward redesign of his family’s four-story Lakeview home would turn into something else entirely—and something quite spectacular.

“It was supposed to be a six- to eight-week decorating job, no construction,” recalls interior designer Anthony Michael, whose firm led the project. “As we were nearing installation, I wanted to make some lighting changes. The electrician opened the ceiling and found mold—years of it, grown all over the house. No one knew! The Environmental Protection Agency had to come in, and the entire site was shut down.”

Thus began a two-year effort to gut the 4,500-square-foot residence. “The integrity of the structure was questioned, and we had to relocate for our safety,” Bala says. Further complicating matters were personal life changes, as he and his wife decided to separate. But amid the upheaval, Bala decided transforming the home would be a cathartic change that could help him and his two sons begin a new life. “The kids had their hearts set on the house and were willing to see it through,” he says. With that, the simple turnkey design became a complete architectural rehabilitation led by architect Allison Markovich, general contractor David Haegeland and structural engineer Elizabeth Cassin of WJE. “Bala took the job head on, and we followed his lead,” Michael says. and the homeowner himself to create a home perfect for a fresh start. “The team was ready for the challenge,” Bala says. “I’m very hands-on when it comes to design and architecture; I worked closely with Emily, and not a day went by without us exchanging specifications for something interesting and new.”

The goal was to establish the feeling of a London town house—a style Bala was drawn to from his past visits to England—with interiors that represent the family’s interests. “I wanted every room to have a story,” says Michael, who gave each level of the home a distinctive personality. “There’s a different style of living on each floor that makes it feel special.” What provides continuity

is the use of luxury materials throughout and the dramatic spiraling staircase that extends through all four floors.

Guests first walk past a Victorian garden to a black front door that opens to a sophisticated atmosphere. “Bala wanted the main level to feel elegant,” Michael says. Here, he devised a neutral color scheme for areas like the living and family rooms to meld disparate elements such as modernist Lucite furnishings and the antique Tibetan doors in the kitchen, a popular gathering spot. “I love to cook, and we spend a lot of time around the kitchen island,” Bala says. “Having my sons pretend to be sous chefs is priceless.” Just off the space is a jewel box of a butler’s pantry, outfitted with hand-rubbed lacquer finishes, verre

églomisé panels and a gold-leaf ceiling. Colonial elements throughout the public areas, like teak carvings on ceilings and milkmaid vessels, nod to the home’s London theme.

Special gestures continue upstairs in the private quarters. In the master suite, Michael established a quiet retreat with framed decorative Paul Montgomery wallpaper panels, a custom-upholstered bed and a bathroom that features a geometric marble inlay, all cut from a single slab.

The interior designer paid special attention to the boys’ rooms, too. “If you give your children their own space, a room they feel proud of, they’ll respect the house,” he says. The elder son chose a Ferrari theme, while the younger went for Legos—complete with models of the Eiffel Tower and the Death Star. They have even more space to play in the lower floor of the house, which has a home theater and a games table as well as a guest suite.

As for their father, his private retreat is the renovated rooftop. “I enjoy solitude and wanted to have a space that would take me out of the city,” Bala explains. The yearround design includes lounge areas, a beverage center, an outdoor fireplace and even peach trees, making it the perfect place for yoga at sunrise and drinks at dusk. “It’s my favorite aspect of the house,” Michael says.

The rooftop trees make a statement, but the home’s most meaningful greenery is an unassuming houseplant in the living room. On his first day in the United States all those years ago, Bala purchased a small golden pothos. “Over time, it became an undertaking to keep it safe,” he says. Today the plant makes an auspicious symbol for his transformed home.

“I felt like I was in a demolition derby, but I was lucky to have found the right people,” he reflects. “A bend in the road isn’t the end of the road, unless you don’t make the turn.”

The master bedroom is anchored by a custom bed upholstered in a Romo fabric and dressed with Eastern Accents linens. The chairs and the nightstands, above which hang framed Paul Montomery wallpaper panels from Nancy Corzine, are from Century Furniture. Michael, known for using specialty finishes, designed a white-gold-leaf stripe for the ceiling, illuminating it with a Corbett Lighting chandelier, while a custom Stark carpet grounds the space. The artworks are from Soicher Marin; the gueridon is Marge Carson.

Shortly after graduating from Harrington College of Design, designer Brooke Kelly worked in Chicago for an architectural firm designing commercial interiors. With her extra time, she began moonlighting for a local real estate developer, giving her the opportunity to focus on both new construction, and single and multi-family projects. “It was amazing to be a part of many exciting, growth-filled years in Wicker Park and the early development of Bucktown,” she recalls. In 1989, she struck out on her own, founding Nelson Kelly Design Studio, growing her business and her family over the next 10 years. She then decided to relocate to the North Shore, and once established in Winnetka, opened Brooke Kelly Design Studio.

“Word traveled fast about my experience in both renovation and construction in the city and I very quickly obtained clients in the area.” Twenty-seven years later, and Kelly and her team have completed a diverse range of projects for a very diverse clientele. Taking a “discover your style” approach, Kelly guides clients through the design process, asking them to cull pictures that convey their likes and dislikes, as well as the feeling they are trying to capture. Once a design proposal becomes a reality, she gains a mental image of how the vision can be achieved, often sparked by a fabric, a print, a piece of furniture, even a color—something inspirational. While color, texture, proportion and lighting characterize her work, Kelly says her “signature” is uncovering her clients’ true style. “In the end, the space belongs to the people that live there; I am just helping them realize the full potential of their environment.”

Key influences in your work?

When I was young, my mother was really into Dorothy Draper, and I remember loving her bright colors, beautiful floral fabrics and wallpapers.

As a teen, I spent a summer with my father’s cousin and his wife—he was a prominent interior designer and she, the editor of Mademoiselle magazine—and was entranced by their life, hanging out with Ralph Lauren, Bill Blass and Calvin Klein. After that, I knew I was destined to design.

Favorite styles to work in and why?

I love to work in every style—from traditional to modern, and mostly what has been coined transitional.

I interpret transitional to be an eclectic blend of all styles and genres of design to create a unique interpretation of my client’s lifestyle.

Your greatest success?

My greatest success was being invited to participate in Kravet’s inaugural National Design Educational Experience in London in December 2016, where I shared the inspiration, ingenuity and craftsmanship that lies at the heart of its companies.
