THE SHAPE OF THINGS

I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment— the influence that a single structure, a street or an entire neighborhood can elicit and how that manifests over time. Take Miami Beach, for example, which happens to be the city where I’m drafting this letter. Arguably, architecture is what largely helped evolve this mangroveand-mosquito-laden barrier island into one of America’s most vibrant urban destinations. What began in the early 1900s with developer Carl Fisher’s Mediterranean Revival architecture segued into a tropical adaptation of Art Deco in the ’30s and was enhanced by a defining postwar extravagant Modernism movement pioneered by Morris Lapidus. Today, Miami’s bold, expanding skyline is a progression of those ideas realized through the lens of architecture’s most esteemed names: Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, to name a few. In this issue, we give props to architecture’s innovators and icons: We ID five famous house museums to put on your bucket list; shine a spotlight on of-the-moment residential architects; and examine the connection between Los Angeles’ imaginative structures and the art world. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” From the residences that we inhabit to the buildings we work in and the public spaces that surround us, design matters.

First, we joined Architectural Artifacts to host the 2nd annual Another Door Opens event, which showcased one-of-a-kind vintage doors, designed by 30 top designers and artists, that were auctioned off that evening to benefit the Chicago House charity. The attendance and support from the art and design industry was overwhelming. Plus, Chicago’s unusually warm winter brought out designers, builders and architects to the Inaugural Luxury Conference, hosted by PowerHouse Smart® and Luxe. The event brought together the design-build industry in a new format, which included an educational component followed by networking at the after-party with great food, music, wine and support from the design-build industry. LAURA MOSS Photographer / New York If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? Dubai or Shanghai. I think amazing things are being done in these places. On your design wish list: Furniture pieces that can hide all signs of technology and still be beautiful, as well as a great comfortable chair that is cat-proof. Also, I would love to own the perfect ceiling fan. Having grown up in South Florida without air conditioning, ceiling fans were definitely important, but I find that their design is sometimes lacking. Favorite book on your nightstand: I really love Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Preferred superpower: The ability to freeze time. Best career advice you’ve received: “It’s freelance—you are free to work with whomever you want.” I would not say it’s the best advice ever, but I do love it as it makes me step back and see how lucky I am to be in such a creative field and not stuck in an office forced to follow a specific career track.

Writer / San Francisco Whose work are you most influenced by design-wise? Charles and Ray Eames. My kids say that I’m stuck in the 1970s, but it’s midcentury elements that I love the most: low-slung houses, groovy furniture, tropical houseplants, mod clothes, heavy eye makeup and sky-high hair—all of it. Ideal work trip: Being sent on a travel assignment to India, Japan or Mongolia. All my Asian friends tell me I need to go to the Far East. Prized possessions: A Donghia deep armchair I got at a sample sale in New York, my grandmother’s marble column table lamps and a sterling-silver bubble ring from the ’60s that had been my aunt’s. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: Joshua Miele, a member of the board at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco; he’s blind and creates all these new technologies for the visually impaired. If not a writer, I would be… A landscape architect. I love gardens and stone.

Who are some of the most fascinating people you’ve come across in your life? Author Ray Bradbury, designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and photographer Tim Hursley are all at the top of my list. I would love to one day own... An Hermès Leica camera, La Cornue’s Château 150 in carbon fiber and a photograph by Larry Sultan. What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? I would most likely tell myself to take a course on business management—and to buy some Apple stock. Dream assignment: Anything that allows me to travel to new places!

CHRISTINE DEORIO Writer / Denver Design obsession: Benjamin Moore’s Homestead Green paint, which I discovered while visiting floral designer Frances Harjeet’s Queen Anne-style home in Denver. It’s elegant and soothing, especially in a room with lots of soft, natural light. If you could interview anyone, who would it be? Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air radio show, who has spoken with many fascinating people during her career. I’m always impressed by how prepared she is for every interview and by her ability to ask probing questions in such a friendly way. I’d like to ask her how she prepares, how she handles difficult or taciturn guests, and how she stays so well-informed about everything. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? The revitalization of Rust Belt cities. I love a good comeback story. The word “Detroit” used to conjure images of once-magnificent buildings in ruins. Now, many of those buildings are hip restaurants, and the city is coming to be known as “the new Brooklyn” for its influx of creatives and burgeoning art and design scenes.

WHY WE LOVE HER: Inspired by everything from childhood woodworking projects to the Shaker structures of New Hampshire, Melissa Brillhart works in tandem with her husband, Jacob, designing homes that place a heavy emphasis on their surrounding contexts. ON THE HORIZON: The couple is currently working on a Bahamian cottage for themselves—a 600-square-foot residence that pulls inspiration from historic Bahamian architecture as well as the Creole Cabinet-Loggia typology—and celebrating the publication of Jacob’s new book, titled Voyage Le Corbusier: Drawing on the Road.

ON THE HORIZON: At the moment, Fleetwood is thrilled about undertaking a residential project for a young family in L.A. that is involved in the arts, which is allowing him to push his creativity to the max. IN HIS WORDS: “While we are supporters of the heightened influx of technology both in the design process and construction methods, on every project we advocate for the inclusion of artisanal quality craftsmanship. When we are successful, you will see form that is handmade and machine-fabricated in juxtaposition. We find it a captivating dichotomy.”

Kirkland, WA | mcroberts-associates.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Duncan McRoberts pours over archeological records, measured drawings and books before building a precedent file that invokes the design principles and tectonic characters of the master works he studies. He then crafts work that aims to achieve a perfect balance in composition, beauty and proportion. ON THE HORIZON: McRoberts is designing a boarding school—in classic Oxbridge-style architecture—and a new coastal-traditional neighborhood development on 80 acres in Oregon.

WHY WE LOVE HIM: For his architectural works, Matthew Grzywinski embraces sustainability, function and his aesthetic experience to design spaces that exhibit a sumptuous minimalism. ON THE HORIZON: Grzywinski’s firm is beginning construction on a residential building in London in addition to a new apartment building in the East Village of Manhattan and a structure on the campus of Cambridge University. The firm’s architecture, furniture, hardware and jewelry reflect a boundless respect for natural materials and exhibit a serene display of restraint. ON THE HORIZON: Dust is working on its first public work: a pavilion for the Tucson Audubon Society’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds. IN HIS WORDS: “We are not trying to keep up with current thinking or cool trends; we are simply trying to do really thoughtful, sensitive work. We’d rather be classic than new.”

ON THE HORIZON: On the heels of a furniture debut at Salone del Mobile, Jonsdottir is working on projects around the world, including the Macau Roosevelt hotel in China, the Sugar Factory at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, and penthouses in San Francisco. IN HER WORDS: “My first employer was Richard Meier, a great architect with a great sense of geometry, which appealed to my earlier studies of mathematics. Today, I prefer to be more free. There are no straight lines in the human body, so why should there be any in the spaces we occupy?”

WHY WE LOVE HIM: As design principal at Studio B Architecture + Interiors, Scott Lindenau believes in reflective architecture: He creates crafted, modern designs that aim to allow clients to view themselves differently. While Studio B’s ultramodern projects seem grandiose, the firm strives to emulate a covetable, welcoming lifestyle.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our mission is to engage the power of architecture to stir emotion while setting the stage for inspiring living.”

ON THE HORIZON: In conjunction with the team at Studio B, Lindenau is diversifying his work in both location and project type— producing projects in several states, as well as Costa Rica, and working on several residences, a school, a tropical boutique hotel and a recycling waste treatment center.

Chicago | wkarch.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Dan Wheeler leads his firm, Wheeler Kearns Architects, in creating architectural snowflakes, with each design reflecting a remarkably different point of view and energy. Wheeler’s work captures a fresh, modern sensibility, but each project also has a singular focus on the clients’ desires and the overall mission of the site.

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a place for creatives. In your opinion, what makes the city such a popular destination for artists these days? Artists are drawn by the presence of an arts scene: lots of other artists, art schools and the explosion of new galleries. This scene exists

here in part because L.A. is still affordable relative to other art capitals. In some neighborhoods, artists are still able to find houses with garages and large yards for making large works, and in downtown L.A. and some other industrial areas, they can find the kinds of studios that have long

attracted artists: unplanned, sometimes illegal, but spacious and affordable live-work spaces in old warehouses and light industrial buildings. Which neighborhoods are you finding artists migrating to for their living spaces and studios? Currently, they’re migrating to areas in L.A. that are still affordable and have dwelling spaces with room to make art, including parts of downtown L.A. as well as Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Frogtown, Elysian Park and Inglewood. Often, though, these migrations can cause pushback from the existing communities in several of these areas over fears of gentrification. Has this explosion of artistic talent affected the cultural and architectural dynamic of the city? Yes, definitely. We’re seeing a number of architects who are collaborating closely with artists. For example, Jimenez Lai, of Bureau Spectacular, recently collaborated with New York artist Grayson Cox on “Speechbuster / 99 Chairs,” an exhibit commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture with a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Are there any local architects that we should be keeping an eye on? Lorcan O’Herlihy is designing some of the most interesting multifamily dwellings in West Hollywood and Los Angeles, like his most recent, SL11024, in Westwood Village. Tom Wiscombe, too, an architect and teacher at SCI-Arc, is bringing an experimental aesthetic to his projects, including the upcoming, private Main Museum

in downtown L.A. Then, there are Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, from Johnston Marklee, who are designing extremely refined private homes and art spaces, including the Menil Drawing Institute that will open at The Menil Collection in Houston in October. Finally, LA-Más is a firm that aims to improve residential and public spaces in low-income areas but maintains a strong Pop sensibility while doing so. Favorite public buildings in Los Angeles? Studio Jantzen and Behnisch Architekten’s Parking Structure #6 in Santa Monica and Lehrer Architects’ Central Park Recreation Pool in South L.A. top my list. The colorful parking structure reflects city planners’ goal of beautifying an otherwise banal or even ugly building type. Not only is it intended to accommodate large numbers of bikes and electric cars as well as ordinary cars, it has the added feature of a dramatic red staircase on the façade, aimed at encouraging drivers to walk up and down stairs. For his part, Michael Lehrer drew on California artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and their “beautiful coloration,” he says, as well as David Hockney’s “ebullient turquoise water,” when he and his team designed the pool to replace one that had been closed to locals for 12 years. The design was built on a budget but proves that imagination can go a long way in creating an attractive public venue in a community that had long needed one. Why have you chosen radio as your preferred method of communicating with the architecture community? What does this medium add to such a traditionally visual conversation? I was originally drawn to radio because I like asking questions and hearing smart people talk—specifically as it relates to communicating architecture, which is, of course, a visual medium. Paradoxically, radio frees one from images and gives the interviewer time to explore, without visual distraction, the ideas behind and the human impact of buildings.

And by the same token, has the architectural dynamic of the city had any effect on the community of new artists who are now calling it home? I’m seeing some intriguing things happening in museum and gallery design at the moment. For example, the installation that architecture firm Johnston Marklee created for the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” show at LACMA breaks from the tendency to shroud modern and contemporary art in white-painted rooms. The exhibit features a subtly dramatic layout, with a sequence of galleries that move through the artist’s career, denoted by slate gray walls at the start and progressing through time to light gray. Into the walls of these galleries, they’ve cut doorways that line up in a slashing diagonal, making for a moment of surreal visual drama in an otherwise restrained design.

PARKING STRUCTURE

too, is noteworthy and exemplifies California minimalism, while Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, who has worked with many artists, has designed Christie’s brand-new multipurpose flagship space in Beverly Hills. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of the union between Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena, of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, and artist Sharon Lockhart, who was selected to represent Poland at this year’s Venice Biennale.

REASON TO VISIT: Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, in collaboration with local arts and architecture organizations, the house provides a variety of immersive, educational experiences through a series of lectures and residencies—so it’s perfect for Wright fans who want a more in-depth look at the architect’s creative process.

EAMES HOUSE Pacific Palisades, California The final home of legendary husbandand-wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames, this midcentury jewel box was a veritable creative playground for the couple thanks to its two-box modular structure: one of which contained their living quarters and the other which functioned as a working studio. Constructed in 1949, the building boasts a limited material palette of glass and steel with warm wooden accents throughout the interiors and pops of green from the verdant environs. REASON TO VISIT: If you’ve ever had the inclination to celebrate the bygone wedding of an envy-inducing couple you’ve never met, each year the Eames Foundation—which is responsible for the supervision of and conservancy efforts for the Pacific Palisades home—hosts a Members Appreciation Day during the week of June 20th, Charles and Ray’s anniversary, complete with guided tours and juried design competitions.

Plano, Illinois

One of only three residential homes in the United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is considered to be one of the purest examples of the pioneering architect’s bare-bones modern style. Comprised of one sole room, the weekend retreat was originally designed for prominent Chicago nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworth with floor-to-ceiling windows that facilitate an easy communion with nature. REASON TO VISIT: You’ll want to make it out to this handsome piece of architectural history before it gets the full Hollywood treatment: Actors Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have recently signed on to appear in a feature film that will fictionalize the highly-speculated-upon relationship between Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe that developed during the home’s construction.

GROPIUS HOUSE Lincoln, Massachusetts The name of German architect Walter Gropius is nearly synonymous with the movement he is widely regarded to have founded: Bauhaus. And the home he built for himself and his family in Massachusetts may well have been the structure that helped cement the style as part of architecture’s canon. Built in 1938, the house blends traditional New England architectural elements like wood and brick with modernist materials like glass, plaster and chrome and today feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. REASON TO VISIT: The Gropius House is a sight to behold any time, but when admired at night thanks to monthly events hosted by Historic New England, the organization responsible for the conservation of the property, the home is transformed by the architect’s own innovative lighting scheme.

While The Glass House is only one of 14 structures on late architect Philip Johnson’s massive 49-acre property in Connecticut, it’s easy to see why it’s also the most beloved: its wallless construction makes it feel more like a dream of a house than a house itself. For all its avant-garde flourishes, though, its interior provides a fairly traditional living space inhabited by Johnson himself when he was in residence there from 1949 to 2005. REASON TO VISIT: Although the house is only open to the public May through November, it makes up for lost time with a near-dizzying schedule of events and art exhibits. Last year’s landscape installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama, for example, transformed the property’s newly restored pond into a fluid art gallery thanks to the addition of 1,300 floating steel sculptures.

WHO: Chuck Anderson, the creative director of NoPattern, the graphic design and photography studio he founded at age 18. Since then, he has collaborated with companies such as ESPN and Microsoft and also pulls double duty as the creative director of design at Havas Chicago. WHAT: Expect a sense of wonderment and surrealist undertones in each photo—plus an urge to try to decipher whether the image is real. Stirring up imaginations, Anderson says, is paramount to everything he does. WHY: Because Anderson is a true artist who insists when it comes to the right shot, he feels it in his gut. This often translates to vibrant colors juxtaposed with intense darker and black tones.

17TH LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS Just as spring brings a burst of azaleas and cherry blossoms, so does the annual Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens. Held every other year, the event calls on top area interior and landscape designers to decorate a captivating residence open to public tours as a fund-raiser for the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. This year’s exhibition, accessible seven days a week through May 21, takes shape in an east Lake Forest estate built by famed Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. The English country-style mansion, situated on more than 2 acres at 440 E. Wisconsin Ave., was constructed in 1922 and boasts five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms and a five-room coach house along with gardens, fountains and a fire pit. Design Hotels’ first outpost in Chicago is simultaneously a step up for Wicker Park boutique hotel offerings and a step back in time, as it is set inside the 1929 Northwest Tower designed by Perkins, Chatten & Hammond. Mexico City hospitality firm Grupo Habita paired with local Convexity Properties to secure the historic structure, and the two rounded out the global design team with Belgium-based Nicolas Schuybroek Architects and Marc Merckx Interiors. Inside the triangular-shaped gray-limestone exterior are hardwood floors in red, white and gray tones that ground modern and sleek minimalist decor. The Art Deco landmark stands tall in Wicker Park—at 12 stories, it dominates the surrounding skyline—and houses 69 guest rooms, a rooftop bar and pool and Café Robey, a French-American bistro helmed by Chef Bradley Stellings. Her eponymous firm has tackled projects in penthouses overlooking her hometown of Chicago and trekked to the suburbs for sprawling family homes. But no matter the setting, each home’s design boasts unique textures and prints, thoughtful layering and a mix of styles and eras. “Being able to access the vendors at The Mart and the River North neighborhood makes being a designer in Chicago easier than other areas,” Mondi reflects. “Plus, the city is full of art galleries, museums and antiques markets—the inspiration you can find here is endless.” When it comes to shopping, this early riser (she’s usually out of bed before 5:30 a.m.) certainly gets the worm— and it takes only a peek at her eclectic designs to know her insider advice is one to heed. 9 a.m. Head to Nico Osteria on the Gold Coast for breakfast. I call the restaurant my kitchen, because my actual kitchen is basically a prop. Order the kale-and-sweet-potato hash with an over-easy egg on top; it’s healthy and delicious. 10 a.m. Begin your shopping on Oak Street. All my fashion friends are here—Jimmy Choo, Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera—but if you haven’t visited the home section at Barneys, you are missing out. You’ll find Fornasetti candles, rabbit-fur pillows and every coffee table book you can imagine. Afterward, visit 900 North Michigan Shops— especially Space519—for amazing accessories and gifts. 12 p.m. It’s time for lunch at RL Restaurant, a classic Chicago spot. The iconic decor,

entertaining people-watching and delicious crab cakes always bring me back for more. My drink here is champagne and St-Germain. 1 p.m. Stop by The Mart and check out the Jean de Merry showroom, which steals my heart every time I visit. The brand carries the lines of unique designers from across the globe, including Jean-Louis Deniot, one of my favorite icons. 2 p.m. Pop into O’Brien Harris on North Wells Street; the owner, Peter Harris, is the best when it comes to cabinet design, and his English accent makes everything sound delicious. Then, take a look at Oscar Isberian Rugs on Kinzie Street. Hide, shearling, alpaca rugs—this store has it all, and just seeing the large inventory can provide instant gratification. 4 p.m. Explore the Windy City’s vintage shops. Start at the Chicago Antique Market, where I’ve scored an iron skull, native African masks on stands and a 1920s Art Deco

bronze of a sexy dancer. Then take a drive outside the city to the Broadway Antique Market—there, I bought two Egyptian brass statues of sphinx-like ladies— and the Edgewater Antique Mall, where I took home a ’50s gold wheat sheaf Coco Chanel-style cocktail table. 7 p.m. Snag a cozy booth in the speakeasy-style basement of Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf, the perfect dinner spot. The filets here can’t be beat, and the sweet potatoes are enormous.

In some cases, the crystals take center stage, in others, they’re treated as an accent. “We’re striving for a 50-50 role with crystal and forged elements in a very organic way,” Kitts continues. With myriad residential and commercial applications, Synchronicity captures the heritage of Hubbardton Forge with lighting that plays the lead role in any design.

SYNCHRONICITY + SWAROVSKI A SERENDIPITOUS AFFAIR How did the world’s foremost crystal maker join forces with foremost luxury lighting designer Hubbardton Forge? It was serendipity for Synchronicity. Swarovski approached Hubbardton Forge toward the end of 2015 as they were developing a new way to cut crystal. At the same time, Hubbardton Forge was looking to craft the next statement piece for the home. “Swarovski was the ideal partnership,” Kitts tells. TOP. A unity of craft and glamour, the Courbé Duet features the world premiere of the new Wave Cut crystal from Swarovski embraced by flowing steel tendrils. BOTTOM. Blush and pink tones, often paired with gold metals and ginkgo motifs in lighting, accessories and furniture, were everywhere. Organic forms inspired by nature were quite popular too. My favorite was Currey & Company’s Forest chandelier with gilded branches dripping in quartz crystal. Since I’m based on the West Coast, I find Las Vegas Market to be one of the most comprehensive and inspiring shows to attend. At first sight: The Radiant lamps are elegant and timeless, perfectly reflecting Janice Feldman’s personal vision. I love how the carved surfaces contrast with the simplicity of the orbs, resulting in this beautifully crafted texture juxtaposed with minimal design. On the job: My work has always been grounded in modernism and minimalist art; I am interested in the perception of nature and natural phenomena in relation to more structured forms. In the daylight… These lamps look like elegant stone sculptures, solid and weighty. At night, they are transformed into lanterns, with an airiness that belies the materiality of the stone—I’m reminded of the paper lanterns you see in the Japanese tōrō nagashi ceremony. At home: The subtle genius of these lamps is their versatility. They could stand on a table beautifully but could also effectively illuminate the small corners of a garden.

Thoughtfully picked from their existing indoor line, Criss Cross—a simple doodle reinvented into a perfect coordinate—and Mr. Rowe—a masculine design with a twist that was inspired by a dear friend—are the festive outdoor accents you didn’t know you needed.

At first sight: Alex Mason’s designs are as thoughtful and elegant as they are fresh and playful. Compared to previous collections, however, these patterns are a little more graphic and handsome, inspired by strong geometry over a more whimsical, natural form. As a landscape designer… These accent pillows appeal to me not only for their ability to complement a wide variety of garden styles—traditional, Zen or modern—but they’d also pair well with other patterns, textures and colors. Though a bit more contemporary and universal in style… Both of these patterns bring the art of Japanese shibori to mind, a style and mood that I’m constantly mindful about integrating into outdoor spaces. I’m wholly attracted to… Gardens that combine structured, architectural form with native, seasonal and wild plantings: I’m moved by landscapes that elevate one’s understanding of the natural process.

Urquiola’s Relax armchair, part of her Maia collection for the international brand, is infused with modernity and lightness and breaks new ground on archtypical outdoor furnishings through the use of geometric patterns, high-tech braided fibers and a wide aluminum frame. The result is just as stellar as the collaboration itself: an exploration and reimagining of outdoor furniture to a distinctly chicer level.

At first sight… Our initial impression of the Maia Relax armchair is one of weightlessness. The chair’s lightness lends a breezy informality that works to balance its sculptural and prismatic form. With a minimal and functional spirit… The chair nevertheless appears comfortable—and almost playful. Like Kettal… We err toward clean, crisp designs that complement modern architecture, so we appreciate how Patricia Urquiola and the brand are mindful of tradition—in both form and material—but smart in cleverly creating fresh pieces that adhere to today’s needs and experiences. On the job: We also enjoy designing spaces that are functional and not overly complicated; we anticipate the movement of the people in it and, rather than attempting to control it, we work with that natural movement and flow. At home: We see this piece living at a tropical resort or in a modern patio setting—not overly structured but intentional, with an abundance of comfort and coolness.

TIGHT ROPE THE PIECE: Custom Plain Weave Shore Rug THE DESIGNER: Louie Rigano and Gil Muller FIND IT: shorerugs.com THE INSPIRATION: London design duo Louie Rigano and Gil Muller consider it their mission to create inspired designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. Their brainchild, Shore Rugs, breaks free from the traditional rug vernacular by using custom-engineered silicone cords to fashion products with a high domestic appeal, indoors and out. Combine that allure with their penchant for brilliant color palettes, like this custom ombre design, and prepare to experience, visually and tangibly, a rug like no other.

At first sight: I was drawn to the chunky, bold weave of this custom rug. It introduces a profoundly noticeable texture into the piece; you immediately sense substance and durability but the interplay of color introduces an artful playfulness. On the job: I particularly like the idea of contrasts in garden designs—wild and exuberant plantings within a formal layout and areas of shade contrasted with open bright sunny spots in a garden—and routinely stress the importance of good lines, ones that pull you into an outdoor environment and beg you to come and explore. It’s important that a well-conceived garden speak to you in this way. Old and new: Shore Rugs’ use of technologically advanced materials in a way that harks back to the long tradition of handwork is admirable. The actual material also communicates an ease of maintenance, which is key for the outdoors. Landscape architecture… Weaves all my interests—science, art, horticulture, craft, design, technology, history and the outdoors—into a cohesive whole, coincidentally not unlike one of these rugs.

At first sight: It’s immediately clear how well-crafted these tables are, and beyond that, they read as extremely chic. Dedon’s lines are always visionary and unique, and the same is true of Lorenza Bozzoli’s work. It’s contemporary and very personal; she doesn’t let functionality sacrifice style. Speaking of functionality… This design is just the right height and you can play with configurations. I also love that the tops are natural trays and have drainage slots—versatile and perfect for all things poolside. Mother Nature and the magic of the outdoors… Drew me to landscape design. The natural world has constant change and life cycles. This made sense to me as a child. Of course, once I was deeply engaged, I wanted to play with all the plants and forms and remake reality. Why not a mountain or a lake where there was none? Visually and viscerally… The tables have a lovely lightness to them, and the fact they have three legs reminds me of Noguchi. The art of craft and the love for craft are what this design is all about.

The Milanese fashion and furniture expert’s marriage with Dedon, and their fine Italian craftsmanship, is nothing short of a refined and understated match made in heaven—resulting in the Brixx table and its collection’s stunning counterparts.

DROP ANCHOR THE PIECE: Windsor Casual Chair THE DESIGNER: Weatherend Estate Furniture FIND IT: weatherend.com THE INSPIRATION: Over a century ago, landscape architect Hans Heistad began designing outdoor landscapes with complementing furniture for seaside properties along the coast of Maine. Among these dreamy coastal estates was Weatherend, and over a hundred years later, Weatherend Estate Furniture continues to produce stately and sophisticated pieces. Using techniques typically found in yacht building, the heritage brand reimagined the Windsor—a contemporary interpretation of the first outdoor chair introduced to America—which celebrates the seating staple’s rich history and ageless design.

At first sight: I admire the subtle maritime aesthetic that Weatherend often applies to their works. There is something that feels particularly “right” about this design and its exceptional craftsmanship. As a landscape architect… I am especially drawn to the style and flexibility of a design. If you’re going to bring something into your home, indoors or out, these two qualities are paramount. On the job: I greatly enjoy collaborating with designers and architects to create beautiful and environmentally appropriate spaces, ones that harmoniously marry the site and the client, and I feel like this chair would be an easy fit for so many atmospheres. At home: The joinery and overall mood of this piece make the Windsor Casual chair the perfect solution for any space craving an elegant yet rugged piece of furniture. To me, it would seem most at home on a deck overlooking the ocean or atop a posh sailboat or yacht.

Our climate is conducive to an outdoor lifestyle, and this house facilitates exactly that. The streamlined design features integrated appliances where possible, and the dining table and island are combined to maximize open space. Black-stained timber joinery extends beyond the kitchen to an outdoor eating area.

How much was light a factor in designing this kitchen? The house is on a very narrow plot and surrounded by tall buildings to the south, which forms a kind of cavern, so large windows were important for bringing light into the room. By providing a double-height space in the rear we were able to flood the room in bright light all day long.

What are some tricks for a seamless indoor-outdoor space? Folding doors are great, allowing rooms to fully open to the outdoors. Opting for a continuous floor finish, such as the travertine used here, between indoors and out helps. By reducing the amount of finishes, you can eliminate visual clutter and the division of spaces.

To transform a Tuscan-style villa into a modern country home, architect Ken Linsteadt relied on an earthy, natural palette and opened up every room to the surrounding Sonoma, California, landscape. One look at this lovely bath designed by interiors talent Kim Stephen, and it’s easy to imagine your daily struggle to get out of bed and start your pre-work routine all but disappearing. While it’s probably tempting for landscape architects to cover the countryside in vibrant colors, sometimes a more restricted palette is needed. According to Chalet Nursery’s landscape architect Eric Braun, there are several trends in outdoor living to look for in 2017. “Lowmaintenance landscapes, native plant material and fire features,” he says. In addition, there has been an uptick in the desire for locally sourced materials, including plants, stones and vegetable gardens. “This creates an outdoor space that relates to its region and reduces environmental impact.” When beginning any project, Braun and his team first consider the owner’s lifestyle—do they entertain large groups, want an intimate setting, desire a natural landscape, and so on. “It is our responsibility to look at these cues and turn them into something special,” he says. No matter the scope or style, Braun points to four goals for every project—to cater to all the senses, have multiple features, keep materials consistent and increase the usable time in the space.

PROJECT ADVICE FROM THE PROS When beginning an outdoor project, first, do some research! Look through websites, photos, catalogs, any useful resource. The more clients better educate themselves and communicate wants, needs and desires to a designer, the more successful the outcome will be. Dislikes are just as important as likes. The designer can elaborate on these ideas and tweak as needed, but a successful outdoor living space is a collaboration. Ten different designers will come up with 10 different solutions, so time and input ensure that the outdoor space accurately reflects what the client wants and needs. 1

Of all the trends influencing landscape design, two have made an indelible mark: sustainability and the expansion of indoor-outdoor living. Frank Mariani, CEO of Mariani Landscape, elaborates, “Outdoor spaces now flow right through the interior and include the outdoor rooms, so there are many elements, such as outdoor kitchens, dining areas, fireplaces and different seating areas, that we incorporate into the overall landscape design for each project.” As for “going green,” Mariani employs environmentally smart practices, such as lithium battery-powered mowers and battery pack-powered blowers for zero-emission/low-noise technology, as well as native plant materials, low-maintenance designs, and non-toxic applications. Drawing inspiration from the beauty of the planet and different species of trees and plants, Mariani ultimately seeks to understand and capture his clients’ desires. “Our job is to enhance and complement the architecture of the home, while providing harmony and spaces of beauty for the entire family,” he says.

GREEN TIP: DON’T OVER WATER! People tend to over water their plants. The proper control and monitoring of irrigation systems can correct this common problem, but even in small plant beds, things get too much water. This can be easily corrected and has multiple benefits, environmentally and otherwise. 1. here are two schools of thought when it comes to decorating a new home: Wait until you live in it for a while to get a feel for the place, or have it done before moving in. Homeowner Isabelle Lane leans toward the latter. “I’m a procrastinator,” she confesses. “If I waited, years would go by and the house would still be unfinished.” With that scenario top of mind, Isabelle and her husband, Mark, a research analyst, decided to hire a designer for their Lincoln Park home while it was still under construction by Ken Brinkman, whose firm was responsible for the exterior architecture, mechanicals and overall floor plan for the house. Referrals from friends led them to Summer Thornton, whose work bowled them over. “We were captivated by its exuberance and positive energy—and the fact that it’s nothing like anyone else’s,” Mark says.

Ever adventurous, Thornton embraces a quirky and unconventional style and has a penchant for audacious palettes. “I use interesting pieces and bold color to keep things playful and fun,” she says. Those qualities were among the Lanes’ top aesthetic priorities, along with a desire “to make the house, which is traditional by merit of its architecture, more clean-lined and modern,” says Whitney Mersman, Thornton’s design associate. “Plus, the owners have two young children, so they wanted everything in order when they moved in.” To make that happen, Thornton and Mersman made sure to expedite design decisions with the Lanes. “We’d show them pieces and color palettes, get a read on what they liked and take it from there,” Mersman says. During this process, the couple developed a deep trust for Thornton’s recommendations. “Summer has strong views

about design and what works and what doesn’t,” Mark says. “But she also really listens and incorporates things that are meaningful and personal.” For Mark, this included two specific requests for their home: to integrate the exotic artifacts he had amassed during his globetrotting days and to incorporate purple wherever possible as a nod to Northwestern University, his alma mater. For her part, Isabelle was open to ideas. “I’m an indecisive person when it comes to interior design,” she admits. “I have lots of friends who know exactly what they want, but that’s not me.” Translating the couple’s vision, Thornton moved forward with a plan to create interiors that are comfortable, functional and visually engaging. To give the home a fresh and more modern look that belies its Beaux Arts-inspired façade, Thornton injected a mix of spirited colors, kicky pieces, gutsy fixtures and bold wallcoverings. Starting in the living room, a study in soft grays and greens, the look is understated but with an

edge. A classic Oriental rug adds a dash of purple, pink and mauve, while dazzling metallic furnishings and a zigzagging sisal wallcovering pack a visual punch. All allude to the vivid palette, daring patterns and singular furnishings that follow in the rest of the home. For example, ebullience reigns supreme in the contiguous dining room, where Thornton and Mersman gave the space a personality beyond its size with seafoam blue lacquered walls, a silver-leafed ceiling and a wall-size mirror. The designers used a similar eye-opening tactic in the sleek kitchen and breakfast nook, where opposites such as swanky brass light fixtures, a rustic wood table and fuchsia plastic chairs add decorative tension. Isabelle’s favorite space is the family room, where Thornton’s flair for color is evident in the cushy yet cleanlined upholstered pieces in shades of purple, red and blue. In this room, the wife is particularly grateful for an entire wall of storage Thornton designed to match the cabinets in the

nearby kitchen. “It hides a multitude of sins,” the designer laughs. Behind its streamlined seamless doors, Barbie dolls and Legos hold court with serving pieces and spare picture frames. Vibrant hues continue to the view outside, as an azure umbrella shades the outdoor dining area on the deck. Following the rest of the home’s bright personality, a lower-level guest room sports a sassy mix of turquoise walls, a canary yellow nightstand and a cherry headboard for the bed. And to appease Mark and his like-minded daughter, Thornton made sure to inject purple into their respective bedrooms. In the master suite, she tempered dark mauve walls with navy and cream accents through the furnishings, creating a serene demeanor, while the 6-year-old’s spunky

space boasts a hot-pink-and-peacock-blue wall pattern along with a solid lilac shade that also colors the ceiling. Today, the residence showcases a carefully edited mix of daringly chic furnishings that convey a bold yet sophisticated and clean aesthetic. And since the project was completed, the Lanes and Thornton have become closer in not only friendship but also proximity, as the designer recently purchased a house around the corner from her clients’ home. Now, when visitors compliment Isabelle about her decor, she can easily introduce them to her fearless neighbor. “Summer not only helped me narrow down what I liked,” the wife says, “but she also pushed me to take risks.”

A fireplace keeps the chill away on cool nights when the homeowners entertain outside. Westport dining and lounge chairs and a Mendocino table, all by Kingsley Bate, provide the perfect setting for a casual dinner party.

he natural forces that shape the world often lead to disaster. But once in a great while, they lead to something positive—even if it takes decades to realize it. Such was the case at John Folks and Max Suzenaar’s historic vacation property in rural Fennville, Michigan. For decades, the 1½-acre plot has been a veritable magnet for lightning, possibly because of the ground’s massive deposits of iron ore. In 1959, a bolt from the sky struck the mansion industrialist John Stream had built on the land, igniting a raging fire that burned it down. In later years, separate strikes felled a pair of tall trees that stood next to the property’s remaining carriage house, which had been converted into John and Max’s main residence.

The latter disaster, however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because it made way for a spacious new addition to the home. “The lightning cleared the land naturally,” Max says. “How ironic.” With more land available, the wide-open plot John and Max purchased 10 years ago now served as the perfect place for the couple to create a rambling farmhouse with furnishings designed to stand up to their canine, Oliver, a Samoyed and Border Collie mix. The couple, who co-own a strategic consulting agency, have a contemporary condo in Chicago as their main residence, but here they wanted a spacious, comfortable and beautiful spot that family, friends and neighbors would enjoy visiting.

To help them pull together the addition, which included a great room with lofted ceilings, a more functional kitchen and a spacious new master bathroom, the couple turned to their longtime friend and designer, Michael Abrams, who also owns a vacation home in the area. “The homeowners had a set of architectural plans for the core and shell, but they needed somebody to do the interior,” he says. “We had meetings on the property on the weekends with a glass of wine—it didn’t feel like work!” From their conversations, Abrams modified parts of the plans, for which Adam Ohlman of Sears Architects served as architect of record. By swapping the position of the kitchen’s range and sink, for instance, he improved the overall flow and sight lines in the roomy new space. Custom kitchen cabinetry with beadboard doors and a rustic painted finish complement the massive island, which

is topped with a piece of vintage pine from the couple’s former dining table, and egg-shaped flush-mount light fixtures encased in wire exude a modern country look. The kitchen opens into the newly created living area, where facing sofas and a pair of plaid armchairs make for a cozy spot in front of a stone fireplace. Arched spruce trusses handcrafted in northern Michigan define the lofted ceilings. “I showed the homeowners three different options for trusses,” says general contractor Todd Needham. “They chose the most complicated design, but the beams are a showstopper.” That detail carries into the screened-in porch, which has a view of the backyard’s swimming pool. Needham and his crew also constructed the dining area’s custom built-in shelving, which is painted a mossy hue that complements the grass-cloth wallcovering and

the space’s antique Oriental rug. “The bookcases add a lot of character and give the homeowners the opportunity to display personal effects,” Abrams says. “It’s a large room, and we wanted it to have a multipurpose feel.” New pieces such as the dining table and wing-style host chairs commingle easily with an English antique buffet and other family heirlooms. Abrams also made use of the couple’s existing furnishings on the three-season porch, incorporating a wicker sofa and bamboo chairs he had painted in a shade of blue that matches a braided rug. Perhaps most important, Abrams satisfied the couple’s goal of having a place for gatherings in the close-knit community. “Every week, somebody in the neighborhood hosts ‘Wacky Wednesday’ with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres,” Max says. “Also, our friends know if you’re driving by our house and the light in the clerestory window is on, that means the bar is open and to stop by—and they do!” Even Oliver receives visitors, as guests often bring their four-legged companions to John and Max’s soirees—which have included a quinceañera, weddings and a Fourth of July pool party that doubled as a birthday bash for Abrams. And so far, thankfully, there has been no lightning in sight during those poolside celebrations. “The pool is the center of summer fun,” John says. “We enjoy it here so much.”

f the adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is true, then Eric Gushee would surely claim it as his motto. To create his large-scale sculptural installations, the Chicago-based artist harbors no shame in utilizing what others have disposed of—like 19 miles of rope, a recent Craigslist score. At his collaborative work space in East Garfield Park’s Stairway Studios, Gushee is surrounded by miscellaneous objects: aircraft cables, rebar ties, lint traps, fishing sinkers. “Every material is fair game,” he laughs. For Gushee, these seemingly mundane materials dictate form for his art. He explains: “I never start with blueprints or complicated schematics, because the finished product will always reveal itself through the process.” Growing up in Manhattan, Gushee always had an interest in the arts and attended Marlboro College in Vermont for creative writing. But after a particularly compelling art-installation class, he fell in love with sculpture and went on to study the subject at Chicago’s Art Institute. Upon graduating, Gushee landed a job at a small local foundry called West Supply, where he crafted high-end bronze furniture for the likes of Holly Hunt. It was there that his seemingly animate work, characterized by strands of metal woven into organic, circular layers, was first noticed by Hunt’s team. The brand commissioned Gushee to create pieces for its various interiors showrooms, and the rest, as they say, is history: “I quit my job and became a full-time artist,” he says. Those early pieces in Gushee’s artistic career became the first in his Emergence Series, the body of work for which he is most known.

The collection, he describes, is a “rigorous dedication to the complex systems that arrive through the repetition of a single act or gesture.” The concept behind this series is in its scientific namesake: emergence theory, the notion that a simple set of rules dictates a result. It is this idea that steadily informs the artist’s expansive, evergrowing portfolio. Often described as organic, Gushee’s sculptures are further influenced by the artist’s vast collection of doilies and lace, which he uses as an inspiration library for manipulating his works. “My practice is an interpretation and distortion of traditional fiber techniques,” he explains. “It is a reference to the discipline of the craft.” In one of his pieces, wild hair-like brass wires and knitted strands of stainless steel are tangled together. As part of his Topography Series, meanwhile, untamed strands of aircraft cable are barely held together by bead-like aluminum crimps. Recently, he used leftover scraps of metal from his Emergence Series to fashion the large billowing shapes of his Exhalation Series—which, at first glance, recalls threads of fine spun glass. In some of his more explorative work, these fibrous materials interact with Gushee’s own sketches and paintings on the surface of a canvas. “Every day, I get the chance to experiment with new materials and their relationship to one another, constantly testing their limitations and boundaries to find new forms,” Gushee says. “It is this physicality of art via materiality, and the endless vocabulary the world gives us, that motivates me.”

rom the day they purchased the 1960s buildergrade Tudor plagued by dark rooms caused by tiny windows, a young Hinsdale couple knew a renovation was inevitable—and the sooner the better. But, as often happens, the demands of child rearing and managing careers—she is a doctor, and he works in financial services—stalled their good intentions. Fifteen years and two children later, they decided it was time to see the light and hired architect Catherine Osika and interior designer Steve Kadlec for the job. “The landscape was beautiful, but it was the darkest house I had ever seen,” Osika remembers about her first impression of the structure. Kadlec’s was even more succinct: “It was a nondescript suburban home,” he recalls. Not surprisingly, early meetings with the homeowners revealed a desire for rooms flooded with natural light and a flowing open floor plan. “We wanted the first floor to have maximum natural light, no doors between rooms and

as few hallways as possible,” the wife says. “We envisioned windows on all four sides of the house and 10-foot ceilings everywhere, including the basement.” Because the owners wanted taller ceiling heights on the first floor, it was necessary to raise the second level. This prompted Osika, who had already drawn several remodeling iterations, to turn to builder Kim Eriksen to help determine whether to retool the first floor and foundation or wipe the slate clean with a new build. “Starting over meant we could easily address the existing low basement ceiling heights in lieu of excavating for a deeper basement,” Eriksen says. “It also solved some infrastructure issues and allowed for more design flexibility.” The costs for both options were similar, he concluded, and in the end the team decided to move forward with all-new construction. For the new plan, Osika got busy designing a French Provincial-style home. “The owners wanted a traditional envelope that was not overly formal and appeared as

if it had been there for a while,” she says. To establish the proper tone for the exterior, she selected the pink common brick that had been used on countless old Chicago buildings. The material is coupled with a gray slate roof reminiscent of older manor houses and a muted-limestone trim, a look the architect describes as “a contemporary interpretation of the heavier detailing often seen on a country French home.” As it happens, this interplay of traditional details with a modern finish emerged as a central theme. Kadlec, who is also trained as an architect, collaborated with Osika on several interior details that convey a classic contemporary look. In lieu of a traditional grand staircase in the entry, their 21st-century version combined his openrailing concept with her idea of stacked walnut cubes for risers. When it came to millwork, they agreed on simple moldings that frame the rooms and articulate the drywall, preventing walls from feeling too stark and vast. And noting coffered ceilings tend to make rooms feel smaller, they employed clean-lined recessed trim to delineate spaces without overwhelming them. “The home has the essence of traditional but none of the heaviness,” Osika says. In keeping with the established concept, Kadlec sought furnishings and accessories that reference the home’s classical style expressed with contemporary profiles and that provided the peaceful atmosphere the owners desired. A wingback chair in the living room, for example, is rendered in a more contoured shape, and the rounded leather chairs in the adjacent dining room have a Deco flavor. In the master suite, the clean lines of the tightly upholstered linen bed balance the tufted mohair chaise lounge—a nod to the past—and the bathroom chandelier is fashioned from glass teardrops instead of formal crystals.

Responding to the noticeable lack of wall space for artwork because of the plethora of windows, Kadlec relied on window coverings to create visual focal points. “Although all the spaces open to each other, a variety of drapery types adds warmth and further delineates the spaces,” the designer explains. In the living room, linen draperies with a metallic thread reference the kitchen’s striking copper hood. The same warm tone repeats on the floral pattern of the draperies in the dining room, while pale blue and cream stripes accent the expanses of glass in the sunroom. Paramount to the success of the project was integrating the architecture with its heavily wooded surroundings and rolling-hill locale. “We conceptualized a brick wall to form a terrace off the library on the front side of the house and placed a mixture of evergreens along the property line so the owners could enjoy privacy while sitting outside,” says

landscape architect Bob Hursthouse. Those trees also greatly improved the view from the interiors, the husband explains: “Because we are on a hill, our first floor is at the same level as our neighbor’s second floor. But when we look out, all we see is greenery from every room.” Come nightfall, the owners enjoy lighting the 8-footlong bluestone backside fire pit, no matter the season: On summer evenings, friends and family gather on the cushioned benches that surround it, while in winter the couple enjoy watching the flames flicker from the dining room during dinner and from the sunroom with cocktails. It’s a symbolic example of the sense of warmth and well-being the family enjoys in their new home. “We had design principles,” the wife says, “but it was our design team that took what was in our hearts and minds and made it come to life.”

With a background in accounting, working as a CFO for large-scale developers, design director Leslie Bowman of The Design Bar, brings a unique perspective and experience to the design table. “Focusing primarily on the design-build side of the business at first, it became evident that offering decor would allow clients to design, build and decorate effortlessly,” says Bowman, who has a master’s degree in interior design. “I felt that if all the design decisions could be made under one roof, homeowners could actually enjoy the process. Thus, the concept for The Design Bar was conceived.” Working from a threestep business model—design, build, decorate—The Design Bar assists with space planning, floor plan design, and kitchen and bath design. Moving through the building process, the team helps homeowners select exterior elements, including windows, roof color, stucco, etc., and make the interior selections of lighting, fixtures, flooring, layout and paint colors. Lastly, the decorating process takes clients through the furnishing stage of the home. Drawing from nature for inspiration, Bowman follows its layered approach, applying different textures, colors and finishes for the design to unfold organically. In addition to design-build services, Bowman opened a retail showroom in fall 2015 that carries 50-plus lines of furniture and accessories, creating a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. When describing the philosophy behind her business, the word approachable comes to Bowman’s mind. “I think the most important thing is to make our clients feel comfortable and happy,” she says. “I strive to create the look they want, but also want the space to be comfortable, sophisticated and timeless.”

How would you describe your clientele? I think the most descriptive word for our clientele would be discerning. Not to mean they only have expensive taste, but that they are savvy, sophisticated, selective and discriminating, yet down-to-earth. What are you working on next? Two big projects—the Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, and the expansion of our retail showroom. The goal of the expansion is to create a one-stop design center where clients can purchase everything for the home.
